Objectives: Several studies have suggested the influence of exogenous hormones on asthma, but the results are still conflicting. Moreover, there has been little associated research on Asian population. This study aimed to assess the association between use of exogenous female sex hormones and asthma in Korean women., Design: Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) is a nationwide programme to assess national health and nutritional status in Korea. A population-based study was conducted to analyse the relationship between self-reported asthma and exogenous hormones using the KNHANES between 2007 and 2012., Participants: The study sample included 6874 premenopausal and 4912 postmenopausal women aged 30-65., Outcome Measures: KNHANES data comprised health interviews and physical examinations. Questionnaires regarding asthma, reproductive factors and exogenous hormones were included., Results: Among postmenopausal women, 3.4% reported doctor-diagnosed asthma. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was associated with increased odds of doctor-diagnosed asthma (OR 1.56; 95% CI 1.04 to 2.35), while the association between HRT and wheeze in the last 1 year was not significant (OR 1.37; 95% CI 0.95 to 1.96). In premenopausal women, the prevalence of asthma was 2.3%. Use of oral contraceptives (OCs) was associated with an increased odds of doctor-diagnosed asthma (OR 1.67; 95% CI 1.01 to 2.76) and wheeze in the last 1 year (OR 1.88; 95% CI 1.31 to 2.69). These associations were dominant among non-obese women (body mass index <25 kg/m 2 ; OR 2.36; 95% CI 1.34 to 4.17 for asthma and OR 2.15; 95% CI 1.43 to 3.23 for wheeze)., Conclusions: HRT and OCs were associated with increased asthma in postmenopausal and premenopausal women, respectively. Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) have been widely implemented to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. We assessed the effect of NPIs on hospitalisations for pneumonia, influenza, COPD and asthma. This retrospective, ecological study compared the weekly incidence of hospitalisation for four respiratory conditions before (January 2016-January 2020) and during (February-July 2020) the implementation of NPI against COVID-19. Hospitalisations for all four respiratory conditions decreased substantially during the intervention period. Researchers have been interested in probing how the environmental factors associated with allergic diseases affect the use of medical services. Considering this demand, we have constructed a database, named the Allergic Disease Database, based on the National Health Insurance Database (NHID). The NHID contains information on demographic and medical service utilization for approximately 99% of the Korean population. This study targeted 3 major allergic diseases, including allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and asthma. For the target diseases, our database provides daily medical service information, including the number of daily visits from 2013 and 2017, categorized by patients' characteristics such as address, sex, age, and duration of residence. We provide additional information, including yearly population, a number of patients, and averaged geocoding coordinates by eup, myeon, and dong district code (the smallest-scale administrative units in Korea). This information enables researchers to analyze how daily changes in the environmental factors of allergic diseases (e.g., particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and ozone) in certain regions would influence patients' behavioral patterns of medical service utilization. Moreover, researchers can analyze long-term trends in allergic diseases and the health effects caused by environmental factors such as daily climate and pollution data. The advantages of this database are easy access to data, additional levels of geographic detail, time-efficient data-refining and processing, and a de-identification process that minimizes the exposure of identifiable personal information. All datasets included in the Allergic Disease Database can be downloaded by accessing the National Health Insurance Service data sharing webpage (https://nhiss.nhis.or.kr).

Background and Aims: Bronchial asthma (BA) is considered an extra-esophageal syndrome of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with poor pathophysiological background. We analyzed the correlation between GERD and BA, examining esophageal epithelium with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), along with clinical findings., Methods: BA patients of controlled and partly-controlled levels were enrolled in the study. A pulmonary and gastrointestinal (GI) questionnaire was given. Patients with no symptoms joined the control group. Esophageal mucosal tissue was taken by esophagogastroduodenoscopy from both groups and processed for TEM. Intercellular space (IS) was measured with an image analyzing program, 100 times for each patient., Results: The control (n=20) and BA (n=20) groups revealed no significant differences in baseline characteristics. All BA patients were using corticosteroid inhalers, with seven patients having a recent history of acute exacerbation. Patients with at least one GI symptom made up 70% (14/20) of the BA group, and heartburn and/or regurgitation were detected in 40% of patients. Endoscopic findings of GERD were mucosal breaks (n=3). The IS of the control group was 0.389±0.297 um, while the BA group was 0.806±0.556 um (P=0.001). The presence of GERD symptoms (P=0.306) and a history of recent asthma attacks (P=0.710) did not show significant differences., Conclusions: The BA group showed a significant difference in the dilatation of IS compared to the control group, suggesting a higher prevalence of GERD in BA patients and a close pathophysiological correlation., (© 2010 Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Foundation and Blackwell Publishing Asia Pty Ltd.)

Background: The prevalence of obesity and asthma has been increasing during the last several decades. Obesity has been reported to be associated with asthma. Obesity, especially abdominal obesity, is the main component of the metabolic syndrome., Objectives: We thus hypothesized that metabolic syndrome is an important contributing factor for the development of asthma-like symptoms., Methods: The Korean Health and Genome Study started in 2001 as an ongoing population-based study of Korean adults 40 to 69 years of age. The prevalence of asthma-like symptoms in the previous 12 months was obtained by a questionnaire, and spirometric testing was conducted., Results: Among the 10,038 participants, the data from 9,942 individuals (4,716 men and 5,226 women) was available. Asthma-like symptoms (wheeze [p = 0.0006], resting dyspnea [p = 0.0062], and post-exercise dyspnea [p < 0.0001]) were increased in the subjects of the metabolic syndrome group. Subjects with asthma-like symptoms had a decreased lung function compared to subjects without asthma-like symptoms. Among the components of the metabolic syndrome, abdominal obesity and hypertension were the risk factors for asthma-like symptoms., Conclusions: Metabolic syndrome is associated with asthma-like symptoms. Among the components of metabolic syndrome, abdominal obesity and hypertension are the risk factors for asthma-like symptoms.

Background: Asthma is chronic airway inflammation that occurs together with reversible airway obstruction. T-lymphocytes play an important role in the pathogenesis of asthma. Proteomic technology has rapidly developed in the postgenomic era, and it is now widely accepted as a complementary technology to genetic profiling. We investigated the changes of proteins in T-lymphocytes of asthma patients by using standard proteome technology: two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE), matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), and a database search., Methods: The proteins of CD3+ T-lymphocytes were isolated from whole blood of six steroid-naive asthmatic patients and of six healthy volunteers. 2D-PAGE was performed and the silver-stained protein spots were comparatively analyzed between the asthma and control groups using an image analyzer. Some differentially expressed spots were identified by MALDI-TOF-MS and database search. The messenger RNA expressions of some identified proteins were examined by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)., Results: Thirteen protein spots in the T-lymphocytes of the asthmatic patients were increased and 12 spots were decreased compared to those of the normal subjects. Among the identified proteins, the increased expression of the messenger RNA of phosphodiesterase 4C and thioredoxin-2 and the decreased expression of the messenger RNA of glutathione S-transferase M3 were confirmed by RT-PCR in the asthmatic patients., Conclusions: Proteomic examination of the peripheral T-lymphocytes revealed some differentially expressed proteins in the asthmatic patients. The possibility of using the differentially expressed proteins as important biomarkers and therapeutic targets in asthma patients warrants further studies.
