Search

Satellites orbiting disk galaxies can induce phase space features such as spirality, vertical heating and phase-mixing in their disks. Such features have also been observed in our own Galaxy, but the complexity of the Milky Way disk has only recently been fully mapped by Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) data. This complex behaviour is mainly ascribed to repeated perturbations induced by the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr) along its orbit, pointing to this satellite as the main dynamical architect of the Milky Way disk. Here, we model Gaia DR2-observed colour–magnitude diagrams to obtain a detailed star formation history of the ~2 kpc bubble around the Sun. It reveals three conspicuous and narrow episodes of enhanced star formation that we can precisely date as having occurred 5.7, 1.9 and 1.0 Gyr ago. The timing of these episodes coincides with proposed Sgr pericentre passages according to (1) orbit simulations, (2) phase space features in the Galactic disk and (3) Sgr stellar content. These findings most probably suggest that Sgr has also been an important actor in the build-up of the stellar mass of the Milky Way disk, with the perturbations from Sgr repeatedly triggering major episodes of star formation. Galactic close encounters can induce gravitational effects in the participants. Here Ruiz-Lara et al. have reconstructed the star formation history of the region of our Galaxy close to the Sun, finding that three recent visits of the neighbouring Sagittarius dwarf galaxy have resulted in well-defined episodes of star formation.

We present the S-Band Polarization All Sky Survey (S-PASS), a survey of polarized radio emission over the southern sky at Dec~$< -1^\circ$ taken with the Parkes radio telescope at 2.3~GHz. The main aim was to observe at a frequency high enough to avoid strong depolarization at intermediate Galactic latitudes (still present at 1.4 GHz) to study Galactic magnetism, but low enough to retain ample Signal-to-Noise ratio (S/N) at high latitudes for extragalactic and cosmological science. We developed a new scanning strategy based on long azimuth scans, and a corresponding map-making procedure to make recovery of the overall mean signal of Stokes $Q$ and $U$ possible, a long-standing problem with polarization observations. We describe the scanning strategy, map-making procedure, and validation tests. The overall mean signal is recovered with a precision better than 0.5\%. The maps have a mean sensitivity of 0.81 mK on beam--size scales and show clear polarized signals, typically to within a few degrees of the Galactic plane, with ample S/N everywhere (the typical signal in low emission regions is 13 mK, and 98.6\% of the pixels have S/N $> 3$). The largest depolarization areas are in the inner Galaxy, associated with the Sagittarius Arm. We have also computed a Rotation Measure map combining S-PASS with archival data from the WMAP and Planck experiments. We have measured trigonometric parallaxes for four water masers associated with distant massive young stars in the inner regions of the Galaxy using the VLBA as part of the BeSSeL Survey. G026.50$+$0.28. is located at the near end of the Galactic bar, perhaps at the origin of the Norma spiral arm. G020.77$-$0.05 is in the Galactic Center region and is likely associated with a far-side extension of the Scutum arm. G019.60$-$0.23 and G020.08$-$0.13 are likely associated and lie well past the Galactic Center. These sources appear to be in the Sagittarius spiral arm, but an association with the Perseus arm cannot be ruled out., 17 pages, 3 figures, 5 tables

This study extends to the structure of the Galaxy. Our main goal is to focus on the first spiral arm beyond the Perseus arm, often called the Cygnus arm or the Outer Norma arm, by appraising the distributions of the masers near the Cygnus arm. The method is to employ masers whose trigonometric distances were measured with accuracy. The maser data come from published literature, having been obtained via the existing networks (US VLBA, the Japanese VERA, the European VLBI, and the Australian LBA). The new results for Cygnus are split in two groups: those located near a recent CO fitted global model spiral arm, and those congregating within an interarm island located halfway between the Perseus arm and the Cygnus arm. Next, we compare this island with other similar interarm objects near other spiral arms. Thus we delineate an interarm island (6 x 2 kpc) located between the two long spiral arms (Cygnus and Perseus arms); this is reminiscent of the small Local Orion arm (4 x 2 kpc) found earlier between the Perseus and Sagittarius arms, and of the old Loop (2 x 0.5 kpc) found earlier between the Sagittarius and Scutum arms. Nebular spectroscopy is a valuable tool for assessing the production of heavy elements by slow neutron(n)-capture nucleosynthesis (the s-process). Several transitions of n-capture elements have been identified in planetary nebulae (PNe) in the last few years, with the aid of sensitive high-resolution near-infrared spectrometers. Combined with optical spectroscopy, the newly discovered near-infrared lines enable more accurate abundance determinations than previously possible, and provide access to elements that had not previously been studied in PNe or their progenitors. Neutron-capture elements have also been detected in PNe in the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy and in the Magellanic Clouds. In a dark clear moonless night, far away from city lights, one may see a starlight-full hazy belt which circles the sky. It divides the sky into two halves, passing through the constellations of Cassiopeia and Perseus and between Orion and the Twins. On the other side of Cassiopeia, the Swan and Eagle are in this celestial path with Sagittarius in the most spectacular southern portion. In many languages, it is called a “way,” for example, Milky Way in English which agrees with the Greek name galaktos, milk. In Finnish, it is the Bird’s Way, in Swedish Winter Street. It took the efforts of generations after generations of astronomers to find out what this nebulous belt is, staying fixed relative to the stars.

This issue’s “Historical Corner” column is about the first ever detection of radio signals of extraterrestrial origin. It is focused on the Holmdel measurement campaign in the 1930s, highlighting the technological background leading to Jansky’s detection of that hiss-type signal being celebrated as the birth of radio astronomy. What would have been a detailed report of a successful experiment on the characterization of thunderstorm static, it has the flavor of a happy-ending fairytale chapter of a book on a branch of science whose writing is in continuous progress.

In this letter, we report the discovery of an intriguing HVS (J1443+1453) candidate that is probably from the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph). The star is an old and very metal-poor low-mass main-sequence turn-off star (age $\sim14.0$ Gyr and [Fe/H] $= -2.23$ dex) and has a total velocity of $559.01^{+135.07}_{-87.40}$ km s$^{-1}$ in the Galactic rest-frame and a heliocentric distance of $2.90^{+0.72}_{-0.48}$ kpc. The velocity of J1443+1453 is larger than the escape speed at its position, suggesting it a promising HVS candidate. By reconstructing its trajectory in the Galactic potential, we find that the orbit of J1443+1453 intersects closely with that of the Sgr dSph $37.8^{+4.6}_{-6.0}$ Myr ago, when the latter has its latest pericentric passage through the Milky Way. The encounter occurs at a distance $2.42^{+1.80}_{-0.77}$ kpc from the centre of Sgr dSph, smaller than the size of the Sgr dSph. Chemical properties of this star are also consistent with those of one Sgr dSph associated globular cluster or of the Sgr stream member stars. Our finding suggests that J1443+1453 is an HVS either tidally stripped from the Sgr dSph or ejected from the Sgr dSph by the gravitational slingshot effect, requiring a (central) massive/intermediate-mass black hole or a (central) massive primordial black hole in the Sgr dSph., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJL

In the previous papers in this series, we have measured the stellar and \hi content in a sample of edge-on galaxies. In the present paper, we perform a simultaneous rotation curve and vertical force field gradient decomposition for five of these edge-on galaxies. The rotation curve decomposition provides a measure of the radial dark matter potential, while the vertical force field gradient provide a measure of the vertical dark matter potential. We fit dark matter halo models to these potentials. Using our \hi self-absorption results, we find that a typical dark matter halo has a less dense core ($0.094\pm0.230$\,M$_\odot$/pc$^3$) compared to an optically thin \hi model ($0.150\pm0.124$\,M$_\odot$/pc$^3$). The HI self-absorption dark matter halo has a longer scale length $R_c$ of $1.42\pm 3.48$\,kpc, versus $1.10\pm 1.81$\,kpc for the optically thin HI model. The median halo shape is spherical, at $q=1.0\pm0.6$ (self-absorbing \hi), while it is prolate at $q=1.5\pm0.6$ for the optically thin. Our best results were obtained for ESO\,274-G001 and UGC\,7321, for which we were able to measure the velocity dispersion in Paper III. These two galaxies have drastically different halo shapes, with one oblate and one strongly prolate. The remarkable 1994 discovery of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr) revealed that, together with the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), there are at least three major dwarf galaxies, each with a total mass of order 10^10 - 10^11 solar masses, falling onto the Galaxy in the present epoch. Beyond a Galactic radius of 300 kpc, dwarfs tend to retain their gas. At roughly 50 kpc, the MCs have experienced substantial gas stripping as evidenced by the Magellanic Stream which extends from them. Since Sgr experienced star formation long after it fell into the Galaxy, it is interesting to explore just how and when this dwarf lost its gas. To date, there has been no definitive detection of an associated gas component. We revisit recent simulations of the stellar and dark matter components of Sgr but, for the first time, include gas that is initially bound to the infalling galaxy. We find that the gas stripping was 30 - 50 % complete at its first disc crossing ~2.7 Gyr ago, then entirely stripped at its last disc crossing ~1 Gyr ago. Our timeline is consistent with the last substantial burst of star formation in Sgr which occurred about the time of the last disc crossing. We discuss the consequences of gas stripping and conclude that the vast majority of the stripped gas was fully settled onto the Galaxy by ~300 Myr ago. We have derived from VIMOS spectroscopy the radial velocities for a sample of 71 stars selected from CFHT/Megacam photometry around the Galactic globular cluster NGC7492. In the resulting velocity distribution, it is possible to distinguish two relevant non-Galactic kinematic components along the same line of sight: a group of stars at $\langle{v_{\rm r}}\rangle \sim 125$km s$^{-1}$ which is compatible with the velocity of the old leading arm of the Sagittarius tidal stream, and a larger number of objects at $\langle{v_{\rm r}}\rangle \sim -110$km s$^{-1}$ that might be identified as members of the trailing wrap of the same stream. The systemic velocity of NGC7492 set at $v_{\rm r} \sim -177$km s$^{-1}$ differs significantly from that of both components, thus our results confirm that this cluster is not one of the globular clusters deposited by the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal in the Galactic halo, even if it is immersed in the stream. We conducted an SiO maser survey towards 221 O-rich AGB stars with the aim of identifying maser emission associated with the Sagittarius stellar stream. In this survey, maser emission was detected in 44 targets, of which 35 were new detections. All of these masers are within 5 kpc of the Sun. We also compiled a Galactic SiO maser catalogue including ~2300 SiO masers from the literature. The distribution of these SiO masers give a scale height of 0.40 kpc, while 42 sources deviate from the Galactic plane by more than 1.2 kpc, half of which were found in this survey. Regarding SiO masers in the disc, we found both the rotational speeds and the velocity dispersions vary with the Galactic plane distance. Assuming Galactic rotational speed $\Theta$0 = 240 km/s , we derived the velocity lags are 15 km/s and 55 km/s for disc and off-plane SiO masers respectively. Moreover, we identified three groups with significant peculiar motions (with 70% confidence). The most significant group is in the thick disc that might trace stream/peculiar motion of the Perseus arm. The other two groups are mainly made up of off-plane sources. The northern and southern off-plane sources were found to be moving at ~33 km/s and 54 km/s away from the Galactic plane, respectively. Causes of these peculiar motions are still unclear. We investigate the association of Whiting 1 with the Sagittarius tidal stream by obtaining radial velocities for a sample of 101 stars observed with VIMOS. Our results reveal the presence of a component of the Sagittarius tidal stream with a radial velocity – and distance – compatible with that of the globular cluster. Therefore, we conclude that Whiting1 was formed in the interior of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy and later accreted by the Milky Way. In addition, our data also reveal the detection for the first time of an ancient wrap of the Sagittarius tidal stream along the same line-of-sight and at the same heliocentric distance.

As one of the most massive Milky Way satellites, the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy has played an important role in shaping the Galactic disk and stellar halo morphologies. The disruption of Sagittarius over several close-in passages has populated the halo of our Galaxy with large-scale tidal streams and offers a unique diagnostic tool for measuring its gravitational potential. Here we test different progenitor mass models for the Milky Way and Sagittarius by modeling the full infall of the satellite. We constrain the mass of the Galaxy based on the observed orbital parameters and multiple tidal streams of Sagittarius. Our semi-analytic modeling of the orbital dynamics agrees with full $N$-body simulations, and favors low values for the Milky Way mass, $\lesssim 10^{12}M_\odot$. Motivated by recent observations of the Sagittarius stream, we devise a rapid algorithm to generate faithful representations of the centroids of stellar tidal streams formed in a disruption of a progenitor of an arbitrary mass in an arbitrary potential. Our method works by releasing swarms of test particles at the Lagrange points around the satellite and subsequently evolving them in a combined potential of the host and the progenitor. We stress that the action of the progenitor's gravity is crucial to making streams that look almost indistinguishable from the N-body realizations, as indeed ours do. The method is tested on mock stream data in three different Milky Way potentials with increasing complexity, and is shown to deliver unbiased inference on the Galactic mass distribution out to large radii. When applied to the observations of the Sagittarius stream, our model gives a natural explanation of the stream's apocentric distances and the differential orbital precession. We, therefore, provide a new independent measurement of the Galactic mass distribution beyond 50 kpc. The Sagittarius stream model favours a light Milky Way with the mass 4.1 +/- 0.4 x 10^11 M_sun at 100 kpc, which can be extrapolated to 5.6 +/- 1.2 x 10^11 M_sun at 200 kpc. Such a low mass for the Milky Way Galaxy is in good agreement with estimates from the kinematics of halo stars and from the satellite galaxies (once Leo I is removed from the sample). We use our integrated SDSS photometry for 96 globular clusters in $g$ and $z$, as well as $r$ and $i$ photometry for a subset of 56 clusters, to derive the integrated colour-metallicity relation (CMR) for Galactic globular clusters. We compare this relation to previous work, including extragalactic clusters, and examine the influence of age, present-day mass function variations, structural parameters and the morphology of the horizontal branch on the relation. Moreover, we scrutinise the scatter introduced by foreground extinction (including differential reddening) and show that the scatter in the colour-metallicity relation can be significantly reduced combining two reddening laws from the literature. In all CMRs we find some low-reddening young GCs that are offset to the CMR. Most of these outliers are associated with the Sagittarius system. Simulations show that this is due less to age than to a different enrichment history. Finally, we introduce colour-metallicity relations based on the infrared Calcium triplet, which are clearly non-linear when compared to $(g^\prime-i^\prime)$ and $(g^\prime-z^\prime)$ colours., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 17 pages, 18 figures

This paper is the next one in the series of our works aimed at determining the atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of southern-hemisphere Cepheids. We present the results of our study for six bright Cepheids: V Cen, V737 Cen, BB Sgr, W Sgr, X Sgr, and Y Sgr. We have analyzed 14 high-resolution spectra taken with the 1.9-m telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory. In addition to determining the chemical composition and atmospheric parameters, we point out and discuss several features in the spectra of individual Cepheids. In particular,we have detected emission in the cores of the Hβ and Hα lines forWSgr near its maximum light, while X Sgr shows the splitting of metal absorption lines into individual components without any change of the hydrogen lines. These peculiarities can be explained by different manifestations of shock waves in the Cepheid atmospheres and by the presence of circumstellar envelopes around X Sgr and W Sgr. The chemical composition has been estimated for V737 Cen, BB Sgr, and X Sgr for the first time. On the whole, our abundance estimates for α-elements, iron-peak elements, and r- and s-process elements are close to the solar ones for all objects, carbon is underabundant, the oxygen abundance is nearly solar, the “odd” elements, Na and Al, are overabundant (except X Sgr), magnesium is underabundant for V Cen and X Sgr and overabundant for the remaining objects. Such a chemical composition is typical of yellow supergiants after the first dredge-up. Keywords: Cepheids, spectra, atmospheric parameters, chemical composition.

In a recent paper in this journal, Sule et al. (2011) argued that an early 17th-century Indian mural of the constellation Sagittarius with a dragon-headed tail indicated that the bright supernova of 1604 was also sighted by Indian astronomers. In this paper it will be shown that this identification is based on a misunderstanding of traditional Islamic astrological iconography and that the claim that the mural represents an early 17th-century Indian sighting of the supernova of 1604 has to be rejected. Recent advances in the position and shape of each spiral arm in the Milky Way (pitch angle, shape, number, inter-arm separation at the Sun) are evaluated and compared, and a statistical analysis yields an updated idealized Galactic map. Earlier tabular results were published in five blocks of 15 to 20 each, covering 1980 to 2007 [1-4]. This paper presents the latest two blocks, each between 15 and 20 entries of published spiral arm researches since 2008. Using this revised Galactic map, and a discussion on the width of the Sagittarius arm (major or minor or equal), an interpretation of orbital streamlines for the gas and magnetic fields is presented for 2 major arms and for 4 major arms in the Milky Way. Our interpretation for all the recent data favors the following: a four-arm non-circular spiral pattern for the Milky Way; the Sagittarius arm being likely an equal arm; the inter-arm separation at the Sun’s location converging near 3.0 kpc. We emphasize that these conclusions encompass all the data, and thus can vary somewhat from the results of data obtained from a single filter (only CO data, say).

We report spectroscopic and photometric follow-up of the peculiar nova V5852~Sgr (discovered as OGLE-2015-NOVA-01), which exhibits a combination of features from different nova classes. The photometry shows a flat-topped light curve with quasi-periodic oscillations, then a smooth decline followed by two fainter recoveries in brightness. Spectroscopy with the Southern African Large Telescope shows first a classical nova with an Fe II or Fe IIb spectral type. In the later spectrum, broad emissions from helium, nitrogen and oxygen are prominent and the iron has faded which could be an indication to the start of the nebular phase. The line widths suggest ejection velocities around $1000\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$. The nova is in the direction of the Galactic bulge and is heavily reddened by an uncertain amount. The $V$ magnitude 16 days after maximum enables a distance to be estimated and this suggests that the nova may be in the extreme trailing stream of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. If so it is the first nova to be detected from that, or from any dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Given the uncertainty of the method and the unusual light curve we cannot rule out the possibility that it is in the bulge or even the Galactic disk behind the bulge., Accepted for publication in MNRAS on June 8th, 2016 (11 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables)

We present a study of the kinematics of 101 stars observed with VIMOS around Whiting1, a globular cluster embedded in the Sagittarius tidal stream. The obtained velocity distribution shows the presence of two wraps of that halo substructure at the same heliocentric distance as that of the cluster and with well differentiated mean radial velocities. The most prominent velocity component seems to be associated with the trailing arm of Sagittarius with $$ ~ -130 km/s, which is consistent with the velocity of Whiting1. This result supports that this globular cluster was formed in Sagittarius and recently accreted by the Milky Way. The second component with $$ ~ 120 km/s might correspond to the leading arm of Sagittarius, which has been predicted by numerical simulations but with no conclusive observational evidence of its existence presented so far. In the centre of our galaxy lies a super-massive black hole, identified with the radio source Sagittarius A*. This black hole has an estimated mass of around 4 million solar masses. Although Sagittarius A* is quite dim in terms of total radiated energy, having a luminosity that is a factor of $10^{10}$ lower than its Eddington luminosity, there is now compelling evidence that this source was far brighter in the past. Evidence derived from the detection of reflected X-ray emission from the giant molecular clouds in the galactic centre region. However, the interpretation of the reflected emission spectra cannot be done correctly without detailed modelling of the reflection process. Attempts to do so can lead to an incorrect interpretation of the data. In this paper we present the results of a Monte Carlo simulation code we developed in order to fully model the complex processes involved in the emerging reflection spectra. The simulated spectra can be compared to real data in order to derive model parameters and constrain the past activity of the black hole. In particular we apply our code to observations of Sgr B2, in order to constrain the position and density of the cloud and the incident luminosity of the central source. The Milky Way’s prominent and widely studied Sagittarius (Sgr) dSph tidal stream has proven a valuable tool for exploring a number of problems in galactic astronomy. In this review of the Sgr system, we present a descriptive portrait of the most salient and unambiguous observational properties (e.g., location, radial velocity, proper motion, and chemical composition) of the Sgr core and tidal streams as they are presently known. We discuss how the history of these observations has shaped the development of numerical models of the system over time, and some of the major conclusions that have been drawn from such modeling efforts with regard to the size and shape of the Milky Way’s gravitational potential and the patterns of enrichment throughout its stellar halo. Finally, we summarize some of the known failings of the present models, which we lay out as a challenge for future progress on understanding this remarkable and fortuitous example of hierarchical galaxy growth via merging in action.

A method is introduced for constructing two-color maps for the in-plane component of the magnetic field of our galaxy in (R, l) and (DM, l) coordinates. It is shown that, in agreement with the standard models of the galactic magnetic field, the magnetic field in neighboring spiral arms reverses direction. However, the magnetic field in the spiral arm of Sagittarius differs significantly from the standard magnetic field model, with the major difference being that the magnetic fields in the southern and northern hemispheres are oppositely directed in the spiral arm of Sagittarius. It is proposed that this distribution of the magnetic field can be explained best by assuming that the spiral arm of Sagittarius, or, at least, a magnetic spiral arm in that region, is not symmetric with respect to the galactic plane and lies mainly in the northern hemisphere.

We report results of the Suzaku observation toward the Sagittarius (Sgr) D region. Diffuse X-ray emission was clearly detected from inside the shell-type supernova remnant, the Sgr D SNR and is named G 1.02-0.18. A hint of an iron line is seen in the spectrum, suggesting that G 1.02-0.18 is a thin thermal plasma with the temperature of kT ∼ 2 keV . Its physical parameters (e.g. the plasma density, mass, thermal energy) suggest that G 1.02-0.18 is an SNR candidate and is possibly associated with the Sgr D SNR. We also analyzed data from another bright X-ray source SAX J1748.2-2808, which was in the field of view of Suzaku. A coherent pulsation with a period of 593 s and emission lines from neutral and highly ionized irons were discovered. These results indicate that SAX J1748.2-2808 is likely to be an intermediate polar.

We present a Suzaku X-ray study of the Sagittarius D (Sgr D) HII region in the Galactic center region. Two 18'x18' images by the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) encompass the entire Sgr D complex. Thanks to the low background, XIS discovered two diffuse sources with low surface brightness and obtained their high signal-to-noise ratio spectra. One is associated with the core of the Sgr D HII region, arising from the young stellar cluster. The other is a new object in the vicinity of the region. We also present 3.5 cm and 6.0 cm radio continuum maps of the new source using the 100 m Green Bank Telescope. We conclude that the source is a new supernova remnant (SNR; G1.2--0.0) based on: (1) the 0.9+/-0.2 keV thermal X-ray spectrum with emission lines from highly ionized atoms; (2) the diffuse nature with an apparent extent of ~10 pc at the Galactic center distance inferred from the X-ray absorption (~8.5x10^{22} cm^{-2}); and (3) the nonthermal radio continuum spectral index (~-0.5). Our discovery of an SNR in the Sgr D HII region leads to a revision of the view of this system, which had been considered to be a thermal HII region and its environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ

We present a deep, wide-field photometric survey of the newly discovered Hercules dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph), based on data from the Large Binocular Telescope. Images in B, V, and r were obtained with the Large Binocular Camera covering a 23' × 23' field of view to a magnitude of ~25.5 (5 σ). This permitted the construction of color-magnitude diagrams that reach approximately 1.5 mag below the Hercules main-sequence turnoff. Three-filter photometry allowed us to preferentially select probable Hercules member stars and to examine the structure of this system at a previously unattained level. We find that the Hercules dwarf is highly elongated (3 : 1), considerably more so than any other dSph satellite of the Milky Way, except the disrupting Sagittarius dwarf. Although we cannot rule out that the unusual structure is intrinsic to Hercules as an equilibrium system, our results suggest tidal disruption as a likely cause of this highly elliptical structure. Given the relatively large galactocentric distance of this system (132 ± 12 kpc), signs of tidal disruption would require the Hercules dwarf to be on a highly eccentric orbit around the Milky Way.

We assemble 121 spectroscopically-confirmed halo carbon stars, drawn from the literature, exhibiting measurable variability in the Catalina Surveys. We present their periods and amplitudes, which are used to estimate distances from period-luminosity relationships. The location of the carbon stars - and their velocities when available - allow us to trace the streams of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf spheroidal galaxy. These are compared to a canonical numerical simulation of the accretion of Sgr. We find that the data match this model well for heliocentric distances of 15-50 kpc, except for a virtual lack of carbon stars in the trailing arm just north of the Galactic Plane, and there is only tentative evidence of the leading arm south of the Plane. The majority of the sample can be attributed to the Sgr accretion. We also find groups of carbon stars which are not part of Sgr; most of which are associated with known halo substructures. A few have no obvious attribution and may indicate new substructure. We find evidence that there may be a structure behind the Sgr leading stream apocentre, at ~100 kpc, and a more distant extension to the Pisces Overdensity also at ~100 kpc. We study a further 75 carbon stars for which no good period data could be obtained, and for which NIR magnitudes and colours are used to estimate distances. Stargazers taking a trip near to—and especially south of—the equator are in for a surprise. Not only are the stars you’re familiar with upside-down, but there’s a whole new set of constellations, bright stars and stunning objects only viewable from southern hemisphere latitudes. It’s confusing at first, but a real treat, especially if you travel to rural areas (the southern hemisphere has some of the darkest skies on the planet). There’s a reason why astronomers have chosen this half of the world to build the very biggest and best ground-based telescopes.

July sees the rich star-fields of Sagittarius and Scorpius swing into view to offer us none other than the Galactic Center Point. This area of sky is also home to a royal star, Antares—an orange supergiant, whose name means the ‘rival of Mars’. Maybe you’ll even glimpse Mars itself this month, too. From views of globular clusters and double stars, to teapots, dolphins and seas of lava, July is a month where nightfall is late, but great.

We have analyzed the double-lined eclipsing binary system ASAS J180057-2333.8 from the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) catalogue . We measure absolute physical and orbital parameters for this system based on archival $V$-band and $I$-band ASAS photometry, as well as on high-resolution spectroscopic data obtained with ESO 3.6m/HARPS and CORALIE spectrographs. The physical and orbital parameters of the system were derived with an accuracy of about 0.5 - 3%. The system is a very rare configuration of two bright well-detached giants of spectral types K1 and K4 and luminosity class II. The radii of the stars are $R_1$ = 52.12 $\pm$ 1.38 and $R_2$ = 67.63 $\pm$ 1.40 R$_\odot$ and their masses are $M_1$ = 4.914 $\pm$ 0.021 and $M_2$ = 4.875$\pm$ 0.021 M$_\odot$ . The exquisite accuracy of 0.5% obtained for the masses of the components is one of the best mass determinations for giants. We derived a precise distance to the system of 2.14 $\pm$ 0.06 kpc (stat.) $\pm$ 0.05 (syst.) which places the star in the Sagittarius-Carina arm. The Galactic rotational velocity of the star is $\Theta_s=258 \pm 26$ km s$^{-1}$ assuming $\Theta_0=238$ km s$^{-1}$. A comparison with PARSEC isochrones places the system at the early phase of core helium burning with an age of slightly larger than 100 million years. We performed high-resolution observations of the Galactic Center 50-km s−1 molecular cloud in the CS J = 1 - 0 line using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. The 50-km s−1 molecular cloud corresponds to a break in the Sagittarius (Sgr) A east shell. A very broad and negative velocity wing feature is detected at an apparent contact spot between the molecular cloud and the Sgr A east shell. The velocity width of the wing feature is over 50-km s−1. The width is three times wider than those of typical Galactic Center clouds. This strongly suggests that the shell is interacting physically with the molecular cloud. The asymmetric velocity profile of the wing feature indicates that the Sgr A east shell expands and crashes into the far side of the molecular cloud. About 50 clumps are identified in the cloud using CLUMPFIND. The velocity width-size relation and the mass spectrum of clumps in the cloud are similar to those in Central Molecular Zone (CMZ).

A magnitude-limited photographic survey of relative proper-motion components and B, V photometry of 1.3 × 106 stars brighter than apparent B magnitude 14.5 ± 0.5 in the fourth Galactic quadrant is converted into a distance-limited survey of 3.26 × 105 stars up to a distance of 500 pc. A streaming motion of 13.5 ± 0.5 km s-1 is detected in 4.1 × 104 Population I stellar candidates with an orbital perigalactic center located at 6.8 kpc ≤ R ≤ 7.2 kpc, with a Sun location Rsol = 8.5 kpc. A density perturbation of ~0.1 M⊙ pc-3 in the Galactic field potential at R0 ~ 6.8 kpc is interpreted as resulting from the density wave connected with the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm. A set of 1.4 × 104 stars of mass ~1.5 ± 0.75 M⊙ identify a pitch angle of 10° ± 1° and a migration time from the Sagittarius spiral arm into the greater solar neighborhood of ~35 Myr.

We have analyzed the catalog of 2106 non-kinematically selected metal poor stars in the solar neighborhood published by Beers et al. (2000), with the goal of quantifying the amount of substructure in the motions of the fastest halo stars. We have computed the two-point velocity correlation function for a subsample of halo stars within 1-2 kpc of the Sun, and found statistical evidence of substructure, with a similar amplitude to that predicted by high resolution CDM simulations. The signal is due to a small kinematic group whose dynamical properties are compared to the stellar "stream", previously discovered by Helmi et al. (1999). If real, this high velocity moving group would provide further support to the idea that substructures remain as fossils from the formation of the Galaxy as expected in the CDM scenario., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the use of high-resolution spectra to obtain a detailed description of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal internal dynamics, its Mass and Mass to Light ratio (M/L). Our direct measure of the central velocity dispersion of SGR give $\sigma_{SGR}=8.1\pm0.4$ km/s which translates in a total mass estimate of $M_{SGR} =1.6\times10^8 M_{\odot}$ and corresponding $(M/L)_{SGR}=9.1 (M/L)_{\odot}$ . We also report on a possible detection of rotation in the core of SGR.

We have determined the absolute proper motion of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr) from the Southern Proper Motion Catalog 3, by selecting red giant candidates from the Two Micron All Sky Survey. We obtain μl cos b = -2.35 ± 0.20 and μb = 2.07 ± 0.20 mas yr-1. Using the same procedure, we also determine the absolute proper motion of the bulge in the region of the sky that overlaps with Sgr. For the bulge, we obtain μl cos b = -5.86 ± 0.14 and μb = -0.59 ± 0.14 mas yr-1, at l = 76 and b = -212. The absolute proper motions are on the International Celestial Reference System via Hipparcos Catalog stars.

Chemical abundances in three giants in Terzan 7, a globular cluster associated with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, have been determined using high-resolution spectra obtained with the UVES spectrograph on the ESO 8.2 m Kueyen telescope. We find the overall metallicity of the stars to be [Fe/H]= -0.61 ± 0.07, which is slightly higher than that previously evaluated from photometry and used for the age determination of this cluster. This metallicity yields an age of about 6 Gyr, which is slightly lower than derived from previous estimates. The relative abundance ratios of various chemical elements to iron lie between those of its host galaxy's metal-poor and metal-rich stars and reveal an intriguing similarity to the pattern seen in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Faraday rotation data on 40 pulsars are used in a detailed study of the magnetic field and its fluctuations in the direction of the spiral arm of Sagittarius. These results mostly agree with standard models for the galactic magnetic field. A magnetic field on the order of 3.2 μG is directed from galactic longitude l 0=55° (toward the sun). However, an asymmetry has been found in the degrees of rotation relative to a plane lying in the southern hemisphere parallel to the galactic plane and at a distance of 50-60 pc from it. All the pulsars with measures of dispersion greater than 30 pc·cm-3 and lying to the north of this plane have positive measures of rotation which increase linearly with distance, while the pulsars lying to the south of this plane have unusually absolutely low negative measures of rotation. We propose that the spiral arm of Sagittarius lies entirely to the north of this plane, while the negative measures of rotation of the pulsars below this plane are caused by the magnetic field of the halo of the southern hemisphere of the galaxy. The magnetic field in the arm of Sagittarius is regular to a great extent and its fluctuating component is roughly half the regular component.

We selected red horizontal-branch stars along the streams of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr) from sdss DR7 spectroscopic data using a theoretical model. We investigate the metallicity distribution of stars in the Sgr streams. The metallicity gradient is (−1.8 ± 0.3) × 10⊃3 dex deg−1 in the first wrap of the trailing arm and (−1.5 ± 0.4) × 10−3 dex deg−1 in the first wrap of the leading arm.

We present 0.8–2.5 μm near-IR spectrophotometry of the very fast nova Nova Sagittarius 1999 (V4444 Sgr) taken 125 days after outburst. The emission-line spectrum of V4444 Sgr, with features ranging from C I to [Si IX] and [Si VIII], exhibited perhaps the greatest spread of excitation for any single-epoch observation of a nova. However, two other novae, Nova Sagittarius 1992 No. 2 and Nova Aquila 1993, had spectra similar to V4444 Sgr between 0.8 and 1.4 μm, so such manifestations may not be uncommon. The continuum of V4444 Sgr showed a significant rise longward of 1.5 μm indicative of thermal emission from dust. The absence of any dust features in the light curve of V4444 Sgr suggests that we may have a relatively unobscured line of sight, or that some or all of the circumstellar dust was preexisting. The latter would indicate that V4444 Sgr is possibly a recurrent nova.

Astronomically speaking, the Milky Way is a big stellar system – a galaxy. All stellar systems of similar type are called galaxies. Our sun is a fairly common star, lying at the outskirts of the Galaxy. The core of the Galaxy is located in the Sagittarius Constellation where the Milky Way is widest and brightest, but is unfortunately not visible at our latitude. The Galaxy is about 1 kpc (kiloparsec) thick, 30–40 kpc wide, and the Sun is ~8.5 kpc from the core.

The Large Sky-Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data Release 3 provided 341 691 K giant stars with stellar parameters. Based on the models of Law & Majewski, we identified 252 K giant stars in the leading stream associated with the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy. We obtained 132 K giant stars belonging to the trailing arm of Sgr using the model of Belokurov et al. We studied the metallicity distribution of member stars along the streams and found a flat gradient in the first wrap of the leading stream, –(0.88±0.3) × 10 −3 dex/( ° ) in the second wrap of the leading stream and –(1.2±0.3) × 10 −3 dex/( ° ) in the first wrap of the trailing stream. Moreover, we obtained a combined metallicity gradient with our sample and data from the literature. We also analyzed the properties of an overdensity, which is located in the leading stream of the Sgr.

Radio recombination lines (RRLs) are the best tracers of ionized gas. Simultaneous observations of multi-transitions of RRLs can significantly improve survey sensitivity. We conducted pilot RRL observations near the Sagittarius Arm tangent by using the 65-m Shanghai Tian Ma Radio Telescope (TMRT) equipped with broadband feeds and a digital backend. Six hydrogen RRLs (H96α−H101α) at C band (6289 MHz−7319 MHz) were observed simultaneously toward a sky area of 2 ° × 1.2 ° by using on-the-fly mapping mode. These transitions were then stacked together for detection of ionized gas. Star forming complexes G48.6+0.1 and G49.5−0.3 were detected in the integrated intensity map. We found agreements between our measured centroid velocities and previous results for the 21 known HII regions in the mapped area. For more than 80 cataloged HII region candidates without previous RRL measurements, we obtained new RRL spectra at 30 targeted positions. In addition, we detected 25 new discrete RRL sources with spectral S/N > 5σ, and they were not listed in the catalogs of previously known HII regions. The distances for 44 out of these 55 new RRL sources were estimated.

We employ abundances from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) to study the alpha-element distribution of the stellar members of the Sagittarius stream. To test the reliability of SDSS/SEGUE abundances for the study of Sagittarius, we select high-likelihood samples tracing the different components of the Milky Way, and recover known literature alpha-element distributions. Using selection criteria based on the spatial position, radial velocity, distance and colours of individual stars, we obtain a robust sample of Sagittarius-stream stars. The alpha-element distribution of the Sagittarius stream forms a narrow sequence at intermediate metallicities with a clear turn-down, consistent with the presence of an alpha-element "knee". This is the first time that the alpha-element knee of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy has been detected. Fitting a toy model to our data, we determine that the alpha-knee in Sagittarius takes place at [Fe/H]=-1.27pm0.05, only slightly less metal-poor than the knee in the Milky Way. This indicates that a small number of Sagittarius-like galaxies could have contributed significantly to the build-up of the Milky Way's stellar halo system at ancient times., 6 pages, 3 figures

We use observations of OGLE-III ab-type RRLyrae stars towards the Galactic centre (Soszyński et al. 2011, AcA 6,1) to study the metallicity and 3D spatial distribution of the old and metal-poor component of the Galactic bulge. Metallicities and distances to the RRLyrae stars are derived photometrically from Fourier-component analyses of their light curves, allowing the determination of distances accurate to ~7% from 0 to 40 kpc. The distance distribution of the RRLyrae stars peaks at 8.8 kpc, with the data indicating the presence of a bar-like structure inclined at ~30° to the line of sight. The dataset also exhibits a secondary concentration of stars beyond the Galactic centre at ~27 kpc. This is consistent with the distance to the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy, and can be attributed to the serendipitous alignment of the Sgr stream with the bulge. This dataset allows the Sgr stream to be traced in this part of the sky for the first time. The underlying metallicity distributions are determined to have mean ± intrinsic width of [Fe/H]bulge = −1.24±0.23 dex and [Fe/H]Sgr = −1.53±0.14 dex.

Deep sky observers often associate each of the seasons of the year with particular kinds of deep sky object. March and April are the season of galaxies, when the Virgo and Coma galaxy clusters are visible from both northern and southern hemispheres, and when our near neighbors like Andromeda (M31), Triangulum (M33) and the Whirlpool (M51) are high in the sky. June and July are the season of globular clusters, when these tight balls of stars can be found in rich numbers scattered in and around the constellation of Sagittarius. In the northern hemisphere, the Great Hercules cluster, M13, rides high in the sky.
