Fast radio bursts are bright, millisecond-scale radio flashes of yet unknown physical origin. Recently, their extragalactic nature has been demonstrated and an increasing number of the sources have been found to repeat. Young, highly magnetized, isolated neutron stars - magnetars - have been suggested as the most promising candidates for fast radio burst progenitors owing to their energetics and high X-ray flaring activity. Here we report the detection with the Konus-Wind of a hard X-ray event of April 28, 2020, temporarily coincident with a bright, two-peak radio burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR~1935+2154 with properties remarkably similar to those of fast radio bursts. We show that two peaks of the double-peaked X-ray burst coincide in time with the radio peaks, confirming that the X-ray and radio emission most likely have a common origin. Thus, this is the first simultaneous detection of a fast radio burst from a Galactic magnetar and its high-energy counterpart. The total energy emitted in X-rays in this burst is typical of bright short magnetar bursts, but an unusual hardness of its energy spectrum strongly distinguish the April 28 event among multiple "ordinary" flares detected from SGR~1935+2154 previously. This, and a recent non-detection of radio emission from about one hundred typical soft bursts from SGR 1935+2154 favors the idea that bright, FRB-like magnetar signals are associated with rare, hard-spectrum X-ray bursts, which implied rate ($\sim$ 0.04 yr$^{-1}$ magnetar$^{-1}$) appears consistent with the rate estimate of SGR 1935+2154-like radio bursts (0.007 - 0.04 yr$^{-1}$ magnetar$^{-1}$)., 25 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

We present the catalog of Interplanetary Network (IPN) localizations for 199 short-duration gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) detected by the Konus-Wind (KW) experiment between 2011 January 1 and 2021 August 31, which extends the initial sample of IPN localized KW sGRBs (arXiv:1301.3740) to 495 events. We present the most comprehensive IPN localization data on these events, including probability sky maps in HEALPix format., Published in ApJS

We present a database of solar flares registered by the Konus-Wind instrument during more than 27 years of operation, from 1994 November to now (2022 June). The constantly updated database (hereafter KW-Sun) contains over 1000 events detected in the instrument's triggered mode and is accessible online at http://www.ioffe.ru/LEA/kwsun/. For each flare, the database provides time-resolved energy spectra in energy range from ~20 keV to ~15 MeV in FITS format along with count rate light curves in three wide energy bands G1 (~20-80 keV), G2 (~80-300 keV), and G3 (~300-1200 keV) with high time resolution (down to 16 ms) in ASCII and IDL SAV formats. This article focuses on the instrument capabilities in the context of solar observations, the structure of the KW-Sun data and their intended usage. The presented homogeneous data set obtained in the broad energy range with high temporal resolution during more than two full solar cycles is beneficial for both statistical and case studies as well as a source of context data for solar flare research., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Following the detection by Swift and Konus-Wind, we obtained a photometric and spectroscopic follow-up in the optical and near-infrared (NIR), covering both the prompt and afterglow emission from a few minutes up to 20 Ms after burst. With an isotropic gamma-ray energy release of Eiso = 1.27−0.19+0.20 × 1054 erg, GRB 210905A lies in the top ∼7% of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the Konus-Wind catalogue in terms of energy released. Its afterglow is among the most luminous ever observed, and, in particular, it is one of the most luminous in the optical at t ≳ 0.5 d in the rest frame. The afterglow starts with a shallow evolution that can be explained by energy injection, and it is followed by a steeper decay, while the spectral energy distribution is in agreement with slow cooling in a constant-density environment within the standard fireball theory. A jet break at ∼46.2 ± 16.3 d (6.3 ± 2.2 d rest-frame) has been observed in the X-ray light curve; however, it is hidden in the H band due to a constant contribution from the host galaxy and potentially from a foreground intervening galaxy. In particular, the host galaxy is only the fourth GRB host at z > 6 known to date. By assuming a number density n = 1 cm−3 and an efficiency η = 0.2, we derived a half-opening angle of 8.4 ° ±1.0°, which is the highest ever measured for a z ≳ 6 burst, but within the range covered by closer events. The resulting collimation-corrected gamma-ray energy release of ≃1 × 1052 erg is also among the highest ever measured. The moderately large half-opening angle argues against recent claims of an inverse dependence of the half-opening angle on the redshift. The total jet energy is likely too large to be sustained by a standard magnetar, and it suggests that the central engine of this burst was a newly formed black hole. Despite the outstanding energetics and luminosity of both GRB 210905A and its afterglow, we demonstrate that they are consistent within 2σ with those of less distant bursts, indicating that the powering mechanisms and progenitors do not evolve significantly with redshift. © A. The duration and hardness distribution of GRBs has two clusters1, now understood to reflect (at least) two different progenitors2. Short-hard GRBs (SGRBs; T90 < 2 s) arise from compact binary mergers, and long-soft GRBs (LGRBs; T90 > 2 s) have been attributed to the collapse of peculiar massive stars (collapsars)3. The discovery of SN 1998bw/GRB 980425 (ref. 4) marked the first association of an LGRB with a collapsar, and AT 2017gfo (ref. 5)/GRB 170817A/GW170817 (ref. 6) marked the first association of an SGRB with a binary neutron star merger, which also produced a gravitational wave. Here, we present the discovery of ZTF20abwysqy (AT2020scz), a fast-fading optical transient in the Fermi satellite and the Interplanetary Network localization regions of GRB 200826A; X-ray and radio emission further confirm that this is the afterglow. Follow-up imaging (at rest-frame 16.5 days) reveals excess emission above the afterglow that cannot be explained as an underlying kilonova, but which is consistent with being the supernova. Although the GRB duration is short (rest-frame T90 of 0.65 s), our panchromatic follow-up data confirm a collapsar origin. GRB 200826A is the shortest LGRB found with an associated collapsar; it appears to sit on the brink between a successful and a failed collapsar. Cosmological Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are known to arise from distinct progenitor channels: short GRBs mostly from neutron star mergers and long GRBs from a rare type of core-collapse supernova (CCSN) called collapsars. Highly magnetized neutron stars called magnetars also generate energetic, short-duration gamma-ray transients called Magnetar Giant Flares (MGFs). Three have been observed from the Milky Way and its satellite galaxies and they have long been suspected to contribute a third class of extragalactic GRBs. We report the unambiguous identification of a distinct population of 4 local ($$99.9% confidence. These properties, the host galaxies, and non-detection in gravitational waves all point to an extragalactic MGF origin. Despite the small sample, the inferred volumetric rates for events above $4\times10^{44}$ erg of $R_{MGF}=3.8_{-3.1}^{+4.0}\times10^5$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ place MGFs as the dominant gamma-ray transient detected from extragalactic sources. As previously suggested, these rates imply that some magnetars produce multiple MGFs, providing a source of repeating GRBs. In the Second part of The Konus-Wind Catalog of Gamma-Ray Bursts with Known Redshifts (first part: Tsvetkova et al. 2017; T17), we present the results of a systematic study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with reliable redshift estimates detected simultaneously by the Konus-Wind (KW) experiment (in the waiting mode) and by the Swift/BAT (BAT) telescope during the period from 2005 January to the end of 2018. By taking advantage of the high sensitivity of BAT and the wide spectral band of KW we were able to constrain the peak spectral energies, the broadband energy fluences, and the peak fluxes for the joint KW-BAT sample of 167 weak, relatively soft GRBs (including four short bursts). Based on the GRB redshifts, which span the range $0.04 \leq z \leq 9.4$, we estimate the rest-frame, isotropic-equivalent energy, and peak luminosity. For 14 GRBs with reasonably constrained jet breaks, we provide the collimation-corrected values of the energetics. This work extends the sample of KW GRBs with known redshifts to 338 GRBs, the largest set of cosmological GRBs studied to date over a broad energy band. With the full KW sample, accounting for the instrumental bias, we explore GRB rest-frame properties, including hardness-intensity correlations, GRB luminosity evolution, luminosity and isotropic-energy functions, and the evolution of the GRB formation rate, which we find to be in general agreement with those reported in T17 and other previous studies., Accepted for publication in ApJ; 41 pages, 5 figures, 7 tables. We present optical, radio, and X-ray observations of SN2020bvc (=ASASSN20bs; ZTF20aalxlis), a nearby ($z=0.0252$; $d$=114 Mpc) broad-lined (BL) Type Ic supernova (SN). Our observations show that SN2020bvc shares several properties in common with the Ic-BL SN2006aj, which was associated with the low-luminosity gamma-ray burst (LLGRB) 060218. First, the 10 GHz radio light curve is on the faint end of LLGRB-SNe ($L_\mathrm{radio} \approx 10^{37}$erg/s): we model our VLA observations (spanning 13-43 d) as synchrotron emission from a mildly relativistic ($v \gtrsim 0.3c$) forward shock. Second, with Swift and Chandra we detect X-ray emission ($L_X \approx 10^{41}$erg/s) that is not naturally explained as inverse Compton emission or as part of the same synchrotron spectrum as the radio emission. Third, high-cadence ($6\times$/night) data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) shows a double-peaked optical light curve, the first peak from shock-cooling emission from extended low-mass material (mass $M10^{12}$cm) and the second peak from the radioactive decay of Ni-56. SN2020bvc is the first confirmed double-peaked Ic-BL SN discovered without a GRB trigger, and shows X-ray and radio emission similar to LLGRB-SNe: this is consistent with models in which the same mechanism produces both the LLGRB and the shock-cooling emission. For four of the five other nearby ($z\lesssim0.05$) Ic-BL SNe with ZTF high-cadence data, we rule out a first peak like that seen in SN2006aj and SN2020bvc, i.e. that lasts $\approx 1$d and reaches a peak luminosity $M \approx -18$. X-ray and radio follow-up observations of future such events will establish whether double-peaked optical light curves are indeed predictive of LLGRB-like X-ray and radio emission., Accepted to ApJ. 39 pages, 17 figures. We present ZTF18aaqjovh (SN 2018bvw), a high-velocity ("broad-lined") stripped-envelope (Type Ic) supernova (Ic-BL SN) discovered in the Zwicky Transient Facility one-day cadence survey. ZTF18aaqjovh shares a number of features in common with engine-driven explosions: the photospheric velocity and the shape of the optical light curve are very similar to that of the Type Ic-BL SN 1998bw, which was associated with a low-luminosity gamma-ray burst (LLGRB) and had relativistic ejecta. However, the radio luminosity of ZTF18aaqjovh is almost two orders of magnitude fainter than that of SN 1998bw at the same velocity phase, and the shock velocity is at most mildly relativistic (v=0.06-0.4c). A search of high-energy catalogs reveals no compelling GRB counterpart to ZTF18aaqjovh, and the limit on the prompt GRB luminosity of $L_{\gamma,\mathrm{iso}} \approx 1.6 \times 10^{48}$ erg/sec excludes a classical GRB but not an LLGRB. Altogether, ZTF18aaqjovh represents another transition event between engine-driven SNe associated with GRBs and "ordinary" Ic-BL SNe., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. We report on the bright burst detected by four Interplanetary network (IPN) spacecraft on 2015 April 12. The IPN localization of the source is consistent with the position of the recently discovered soft gamma-repeater SGR 1935+2154. From the Konus-Wind (KW) observation, we derive temporal and spectral parameters of the emission, and the burst energetics. The rather long duration of the burst ($\sim$1.7 s) and the large measured energy fluence ($\sim2.5\times10^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$) put it in the class of rare "intermediate" SGR flares, and this is the first one observed from SGR 1935+2154. A search for quasi-periodic oscillations in the KW light curve yields no statistically significant signal. Of four spectral models tested, optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung and a single blackbody (BB) function can be rejected on statistical grounds; two more complex models, a cutoff power law (CPL) and a sum of two BB functions (2BB), fit the burst spectra well and neither of them may be ruled out by the KW observation. The CPL and 2BB model parameters we report for this bright flare are typical of SGRs; they are also consistent with those obtained from observations of much weaker and shorter SGR 1935+2154 bursts with other instruments. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) occurring in the local Universe constitute an interesting sub-class of the GRB family, since their luminosity is on average lower than that of their cosmological analogs. We aim to contribute to the study of local bursts by reporting the case of GRB 171205A. This source was discovered by Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on 2017, December 5 and soon associated with a low redshift host galaxy (z=0.037), and an emerging SN (SN 2017iuk). We analyzed the full Swift, dataset, comprising the UV-Optical Telescope (UVOT), X-ray Telescope (XRT) and BAT data. In addition, we employed the Konus-Wind high energy data as a valuable extension at gamma-ray energies. The photometric SN signature is clearly visible in the UVOT u, b and v filters. The maximum emission is reached at ~ 13 (rest frame) days, and the whole bump resembles that of SN 2006aj, but lower in magnitude and with a shift in time of +2 d. A prebump in the v-band is also clearly visible, and this is the first time that such a feature is not observed achromatically in GRB-SNe. Its physical origin cannot be easily explained. The X-ray spectrum shows an intrinsic Hydrogen column density N_H,int = 7.4(+4.1 -3.6) X 10^20 / cm^2$, which is at the low end of the N_H,int, even considering just low redshift GRBs. The spectrum also features a thermal component, which is quite common in GRBs associated with SNe, but whose origin is still a matter of debate. Finally, the isotropic energy in the gamma-ray band, E_iso = 2.18(+0.63 -0.50) X 10^49 erg, is lower than those of cosmological GRBs. Combining this value with the peak energy in the same band, E_p=125(+141 -37) keV, implies that GRB 171205A is an outlier of the Amati relation, as are some other low redshift GRBs, and its emission mechanism should be different from that of canonical, farther away GRBs., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, A&A in press

The ejecta composition is an open question in gamma-ray burst (GRB) physics . Some GRBs possess a quasi-thermal spectral component in the time-resolved spectral analysis , suggesting a hot fireball origin. Others show a featureless non-thermal spectrum known as the Band function , consistent with a synchrotron radiation origin and suggesting that the jet is Poynting-flux dominated at the central engine and probably in the emission region as well . There are also bursts showing a sub-dominant thermal component and a dominant synchrotron component , suggesting a probable hybrid jet composition . Here, we report an extraordinarily bright GRB 160625B, simultaneously observed in gamma-ray and optical wavelengths, whose prompt emission consists of three isolated episodes separated by long quiescent intervals, with the durations of each sub-burst being approximately 0.8 s, 35 s and 212 s, respectively. Its high brightness (with isotropic peak luminosity L ≈ 4 × 10 erg s) allows us to conduct detailed time-resolved spectral analysis in each episode, from precursor to main burst and to extended emission. The spectral properties of the first two sub-bursts are distinctly different, allowing us to observe the transition from thermal to non-thermal radiation between well-separated emission episodes within a single GRB. In this catalog, we present the results of a systematic study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with reliable redshift estimates detected in the triggered mode of the Konus-Wind (KW) experiment during the period from 1997 February to 2016 June. The sample consists of 150 GRBs (including twelve short/hard bursts) and represents the largest set of cosmological GRBs studied to date over a broad energy band. From the temporal and spectral analyses of the sample, we provide the burst durations, the spectral lags, the results of spectral fits with two model functions, the total energy fluences, and the peak energy fluxes. The most energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are remarkable sources releasing huge amounts of energy on short timescales. Their prompt emission, which usually lasts few seconds, is so bright that it is visible across the whole observable universe. Studying these extreme events may provide clues on the nature of GRB progenitors and on the physical processes at work in relativistic jets. In this paper, we study the bright end of the isotropic energy distribution of long GRBs. We use two samples of long GRBs with redshift detected by Fermi/GBM or Konus-Wind, two instruments which measure the spectral shape and the energetics of the prompt emission accurately. We focus on GRBs within a range of redshifts z = 1 -- 5, a volume that contains a large number of energetic GRBs, and we propose a simple method to reconstruct the bright end of the GRB energy distribution from the observed one. We find that the GRB energy distribution cannot be described by a simple power law but requires a strong cutoff above $1-3 \times 10^{54}$ erg. We attribute this feature to an intrinsic limit on the energy per unit of solid angle radiated by gamma-ray bursts., Revised version after correcting an error in the computation of the horizon of Konus GRBs (Table 3). InterPlanetary Network (IPN) data are presented for the gamma-ray bursts in the second Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) catalog. Of the 462 bursts in that catalog between 2010 July 12 and 2012 July 11, 428, or 93%, were observed by at least 1 other instrument in the 9-spacecraft IPN. Of the 428, the localizations of 165 could be improved by triangulation. For these bursts, triangulation gives one or more annuli whose half-widths vary between about 2.′3° and 16°, depending on the peak flux, fluence, time history, arrival direction, and the distance between the spacecraft. We compare the IPN localizations with the GBM 1σ, 2σ, and 3σ error contours and find good agreement between them. The IPN 3σ error boxes have areas between about 8 square arcminutes and 380 square degrees, and are an average of 2500 times smaller than the corresponding GBM 3σ localizations. We identify four bursts in the IPN/GBM sample whose origins were given as “uncertain,” but may in fact be cosmic. This leads to an estimate of over 99% completeness for the GBM catalog.

We present observations of the dark Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 051008 provided by Swift/BAT, Swift/XRT, Konus-WIND, INTEGRAL/SPI-ACS in the high-energy domain and the Shajn, Swift/UVOT, Tautenburg, NOT, Gemini and Keck I telescopes in the optical and near-infrared bands. The burst was detected only in gamma- and X-rays and neither a prompt optical nor a radio afterglow were detected down to deep limits. We identified the host galaxy of the burst, which is a typical Lyman-break Galaxy (LBG) with R-magnitude of 24.06 +/- 0.10. A redshift of the galaxy of z = 2.77 (-0.20,+0.15) is measured photometrically due to the presence of a clear, strong Lyman-break feature. The host galaxy is a small starburst galaxy with moderate intrinsic extinction (A_V = 0.3 mag) and has a SFR of ~ 60 M_Sun / yr typical for LBGs. It is one of the few cases where a GRB host has been found to be a classical Lyman-break galaxy. Using the redshift we estimate the isotropic-equivalent radiated energy of the burst to be E_iso = (1.15 +/- 0.20) x 10^54 erg. We describe the current, 9-spacecraft Interplanetary Network (IPN). The IPN detects about 325 gamma-ray bursts per year, of which about 100 are not localized by any other missions. We give some examples of how the data, which are public, can be utilized.

We present multi-wavelength observations of the dark GRB 051008. The burst was not detected in the optical bands, however we discover the host galaxy and secured the redshift of the host with following campaign of multicolor observations of Shajn, NOT, Gemini North and Keck telescopes. We provide arguments that the galaxy could be in a complex of gravitationally bound galaxies. Our investigation of the GRB 051008 also confirms a tendency of host galaxies of dark bursts to be more dusty.

The exceptionally intense long GRB 110918A was discovered by several GRB observing missions: INTEGRAL (SPI-ACS), Konus-WIND , Mars Odyssey (HEND), and MESSENGER (GRNS) on September 18, 2011. This GRB was localized by the Interplanetary Network (IPN) and its bright X-ray counterpart was found in close vicinity of the IPN box in the Swift /XRT follow-up observations starting 1.2 days after the trigger. The optical afterglow was discovered by the Isaac Newton Telescope and its spectroscopic redshift z = 0.982 was measured with the GMOS spectrograph mounted on the Gemini-N telescope. GRB 110918A is the brightest burst detected by Konus-WIND for more than 17 years of its continuous observations. The instrument’s light curves in three energy bands covering 22–1450 keV range show an extremely bright, short, hard pulse followed by three weaker, softer, partly overlapping pulses within next 25 seconds. A spectral lag between the light-curves is determined, showing a substantial increase in the course of the burst. The emission is detected up to 12 MeV. Modeling the time-integrated energy spectrum with the Band function yields a moderate value of E peak = 340keV, while the time-resolved spectral analysis reveals strong hardness-intensity correlation and a hard-to-soft evolution of the emission: E peak falls from ~ 4 MeV at the onset of the huge initial pulse to ~50 keV at the final stage of the burst. The total 20 keV–10 MeV energy fluence amounts to S = (7.8 ± 0.4) × 10-4 erg cm-2 and a 64-ms peak flux F max = (9.2 ± 0.4) × 10-4 erg cm-2 s-1 , which corresponds to a huge isotropic-equivalent energy release E iso = (2.1 ± 0.1) × 1054 erg and the record-breaking peak luminosity L iso ;max = (4.7 ± 0.2) × 1054 erg s-1 .

The short review of GRB studies performed for many years by Ioffe Institute is presented. An important breakthrough in GRB studies became possible owing to four Konus experiments carried out by the Ioffe Institute onboard the Venera 11 to 14 interplanetary missions from 1978 to 1983. The joint Russian-American Konus-Wind experiment, which has already been operating for more than 18 years, provides important and often unique data regarding GRB characteristics in 20 keV – 15 MeV energy range. These investigations were complemented by several Konus and Helicon experiments onboard Russian near-Earth spacecraft. A short description of future Konus-UF and Konus-M experiments are also given.

The detection of GRB 070912 recorded in the field of view of the SPI, IBIS/ISGRI, and JEMX telescope on September 12, 2007, at 07h32m19s (UT) when analyzing the INTEGRAL archival data is reported. The burst is one of the well-localized events closest to the direction toward the Galactic center (less than from the source Sgr A*) over the entire history of burst observations. Since it was not promptly revealed by the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System (IBAS), no information about its coordinates was disseminated and no search for optical and soft X-ray afterglows was conducted. The 3–200 keV fluence was 2.8 × 10−6 erg cm−2 and the peak flux was 1.8 × 10−7 erg cm−2 s−1 (1.9 ph cm−2 s−1). The burst was also observed in the KONUS/WIND experiment in the background mode, although it was not included in the list of recorded bursts. GRB 070912 is among a limited number of events for which a broadband (3 keV-2 MeV) spectrum of X-ray and gamma-ray emission has been obtained and their evolution from the first instants to complete decay has been traced. It shows how the fast evolution of its spectrum gives rise to absorption features at energies of ∼100 keV.Within the first seconds after the onset of the burst, its spectrum was a power law with a photon index of ∼0.8, but it exhibited a noticeable deficit of photons at energies below 20 keV. Such an initial deficit (a delay in appearance) of X-ray photons can be explained by their “high-latitude” origin relative to the line of sight. The spectrum rapidly softened and at the decay phase was well described by a blackbody (or Wien) law. This allows the distance (redshift) to the burst source to be estimated.

The detection of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) in the solar neighborhood would have very important implications for GRB phenomenology. The leading theories for cosmological GRBs would not be able to explain such events. The final bursts of evaporating Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), however, would be a natural explanation for local GRBs. We present a novel technique that can constrain the distance to gamma-ray bursts using detections from widely separated, non-imaging spacecraft. This method can determine the actual distance to the burst if it is local. We applied this method to constrain distances to a sample of 36 short duration GRBs detected by the Interplanetary Network (IPN) that show observational properties that are expected from PBH evaporations. These bursts have minimum possible distances in the 10^13-10^18 cm (7-10^5 AU) range, consistent with the expected PBH energetics and with a possible origin in the solar neighborhood, although none of the bursts can be unambiguously demonstrated to be local. On 2009 June 5, the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope triggered on two short, and relatively dim bursts with spectral properties similar to Soft Gamma Repeater (SGR) bursts. Independent localizations of the bursts by triangulation with the Konus-RF and with the Swift satellite, confirmed their origin from the same, previously unknown, source. The subsequent discovery of X-ray pulsations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), confirmed the magnetar nature of the new source, SGR J0418+5729. We describe here the Fermi/GBM observations, the discovery and the localization of this new SGR, and our infrared and Chandra X-ray observations. We also present a detailed temporal and spectral study of the two GBM bursts. SGR J0418+5729 is the second source discovered in the same region of the sky in the last year, the other one being SGR J0501+4516. Both sources lie in the direction of the galactic anti-center and presumably at the nearby distance of ~2 kpc (assuming they reside in the Perseus arm of our galaxy). The near-threshold GBM detection of bursts from SGR J0418+5729 suggests that there may be more such dim SGRs throughout our galaxy, possibly exceeding the population of bright SGRs. Finally, using sample statistics, we conclude that the implications of the new SGR discovery on the number of observable active magnetars in our galaxy at any given time is, 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in ApJL on 2010 January 8

The light curve, energy spectra, energetics, and IPN localization of an exceedingly intense short duration hard spectrum burst, GRB 070201, obtained from Konus-Wind, INTEGRAL (SPI-ACS), and MESSENGER data are presented. The total fluence of the burst and the peak flux are $S = 2.00_{-0.26}^{+0.10} \times 10^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ and $F_{max} = 1.61_{-0.50}^{+0.29} \times 10^{-3}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The IPN error box has an area of 446 square arcminutes and covers the peripheral part of the M31 galaxy. Assuming that the source of the burst is indeed in M31 at a distance of 0.78 Mpc, the measured values of the fluence $S$ and maximum flux $F_{max}$ correspond to a total energy of $Q = 1.5 \times 10^{45}$ erg, and a maximum luminosity $L = 1.2 \times 10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$. These data are in good agreement with the corresponding characteristics of the previously observed giant flares from other soft gamma repeaters. The evidence for the identification of this event as a giant flare from a soft gamma repeater in the M31 galaxy is presented., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJ

The Soft Gamma Repeater, SGR 1900+14, entered a new phase of activity in April 2001 initiated by the intermediate flare recorded on April 18. Ten days following this flare, we discovered an abrupt increase in the source flux between consecutive RXTE orbits. This X-ray flux excess decayed over the next several minutes and was subsequently linked to a high fluence burst from SGR 1900+14 recorded by other spacecraft (Ulysses and KONUS) while the SGR was Earth-occulted for RXTE. We present here spectral and temporal analysis of both the burst of 28 April and the long X-ray tail following it. We find strong evidence of an exclusively thermal X-ray tail in this event and bring this evidence to bear on other bursts and flares from SGR 1900+14 which have shown extended X-ray excesses (e.g. 1998 August 29). The knowledge of the rate of soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) giant flares is important for understanding the giant flare mechanism and the SGR energy budget in the framework of the magnetar model. We estimate the upper limit to the rate using the results of an extensive search for extragalactic soft gamma-repeater giant flares (GFs) among 140 short gamma-ray bursts detected between 1994 and 2010 by Konus-Wind using InterPlanetary Network (IPN) localizations and temporal parameters. We show that Konus-Wind and the IPN are capable of detecting GFs with energies of 2.3x10^46 erg (which is the energy of the GF from SGR 1806-20 assuming a distance of 15 kpc) at distances of up to about 30 Mpc and GFs with energies of, 6 pages, 3 figures. Observational data on the bursting activity of all five known Soft Gamma Repeaters are presented. This information was obtained with Konus gamma-ray burst experiments on board Venera 11-14, Wind, and Kosmos-2326 spacecraft in the period from 1978 to 2000. These data on appearance rates, time histories, and energy spectra of repeated soft bursts obtained with similar instruments and collected together in a comparable form should be useful for further studies of SGRs. We report on two observations of a soft bursting source in 1997 June, whose time histories and energy spectra are consistent with those of the soft gamma repeaters. The source can only be localized to an ~3.8 degree long error box in the direction of the Galactic center, whose area is ~ 80 sq. arcmin. The location of the source, while not consistent with that of any of the four known soft repeaters, is consistent with those of several known and possible supernova remnants., 13 pages, 3 figures. We apply a statistical method to derive very precise locations for soft gamma repeaters using data from the interplanetary network. We demonstrate the validity of the method by deriving a 600 arcsec^2 error ellipse for SGR1900+14 whose center agrees well with the VLA source position. We then apply it to SGR1806-20, for which we obtain a 230 arcsec^2 error ellipse, the smallest burst error box to date. We find that the most likely position of the source has a small but significant displacement from that of the non-thermal core of the radio supernova remnant G10.0-0.3, which was previously thought to be the position of the repeater. In this catalog, we present the results of a systematic study of 295 short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by Konus-Wind (KW) from 1994 to 2010. From the temporal and spectral analyses of the sample, we provide the burst durations, the spectral lags, the results of spectral fits with three model functions, the total energy fluences and the peak energy fluxes of the bursts. We discuss evidence found for an additional power-law spectral component and the presence of extended emission in a fraction of the KW short GRBs. The double burst, GRB 110709B, triggered Swift/BAT twice at 21:32:39 UT and 21:43:45 UT, respectively, on 9 July 2011. This is the first time we observed a GRB with two BAT triggers. In this paper, we present simultaneous Swift and Konus-WIND observations of this unusual GRB and its afterglow. If the two events originated from the same physical progenitor, their different time-dependent spectral evolution suggests they must belong to different episodes of the central engine, which may be a magnetar-to-BH accretion system., 10 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables. In 2004, SGR 1806-20 underwent a period of intense and long-lasting burst activity that included the giant flare of 27 December 2004 -- the most intense extra-solar transient event ever detected at Earth. During this active episode, we routinely monitored the source with Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and occasionally with Chandra. During the course of these observations, we identified two relatively bright bursts observed with Konus-Wind in hard X-rays that were followed by extended X-ray tails or afterglows lasting hundreds to thousands of seconds. Here, we present detailed spectral and temporal analysis of these events observed about 6 and 1.5 months prior to the 27 December 2004 Giant Flare. We find that both X-ray tails are consistent with a cooling blackbody of constant radius. These spectral results are qualitatively similar to those of the burst afterglows recorded from SGR 1900+14 and recently from SGR 1550-5418. However, the latter two sources exhibit significant increase in their pulsed X-ray intensity following the burst, while we did not detect any significant changes in the RMS pulsed amplitude during the SGR 1806-20 events. Moreover, we find that the fraction of energy partitioned to the burst (prompt energy release) and the tail (afterglow) differs by an order of magnitude between SGR 1900+14 and SGR 1806-20. We suggest that such differences can be attributed to differences in the crustal heating mechanism of these neutron stars combined with the geometry of the emitting areas., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ

We report on the spectral cross-calibration results of the Konus-Wind, the Suzaku/WAM, and the Swift/BAT instruments using simultaneously observed gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). This is the first attempt to use simultaneously observed GRBs as a spectral calibration source to understand systematic problems among the instruments. Based on these joint spectral fits, we find that 1) although a constant factor (a normalization factor) agrees within 20% among the instruments, the BAT constant factor shows a systematically smaller value by 10-20% compared to that of Konus-Wind, 2) there is a systematic trend that the low-energy photon index becomes steeper by 0.1-0.2 and Epeak becomes systematically higher by 10-20% when including the BAT data in the joint fits, and 3) the high-energy photon index agrees within 0.2 among the instruments. Our results show that cross-calibration based on joint spectral analysis is an important step to understanding the instrumental effects which could be affecting the scientific results from the GRB prompt emission data., Comment: 82 pages, 88 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Between 1996 July and 2002 April, one or more spacecraft of the interplanetary network detected 787 cosmic gamma-ray bursts that were also detected by the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and/or Wide-Field X-Ray Camera experiments aboard the BeppoSAX spacecraft. During this period, the network consisted of up to six spacecraft, and using triangulation, the localizations of 475 bursts were obtained. In 2008 August, the new soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 0501+4516 was discovered by Swift. The source was soon confirmed by several groups in space- and ground-based multi-wavelength observations. In this letter we report the analysis of five short bursts from the recently discovered SGR, detected with Konus-Wind gamma-ray burst spectrometer. Properties of the time histories of the observed events, as well as results of multi-channel spectral analysis, both in the 20--300 keV energy range, show, that the source exhibits itself as a typical SGR. The results of gamma-ray burst observations made in the 10 keV - 8 MeV range with Konus-B instrument on Granat spacecraft are presented. 19 gamma-ray bursts and 60 solar flares have been measured altogether in 27 days at a sensitivity level of 5×10−8 - 5×10−7 erg/cm2. The fast spectral variability of bursts and the presence of features in their spectra in the form of absorption and emission lines are confirmed.

We analyze the data obtained when the Konus-Wind gamma-ray spectrometer detected a giant flare in SGR 1806-20 on December 27, 2004. The flare is similar in appearance to the two known flares in SGR 0526-66 and SGR 1900+14 while exceeding them significantly in intensity. The enormous X-ray and gamma-ray flux in the narrow initial pulse of the flare leads to almost instantaneous deep saturation of the gamma-ray detectors, ruling out the possibility of directly measuring the intensity, time profile, and energy spectrum of the initial pulse. In this situation, the detection of an attenuated signal of Compton back-scattering of the initial pulse emission by the Moon with the Helicon gamma-ray spectrometer onboard the Coronas-F satellite was an extremely favorable circumstance. Analysis of this signal has yielded the most reliable temporal, energy, and spectral characteristics of the pulse. The temporal and spectral characteristics of the pulsating flare tail have been determined from Konus-Wind data. Its soft spectra have been found to contain also a hard power-law component extending to 10 MeV. A weak afterglow of SGR 1806-20 decaying over several hours is traceable up to 1 MeV. We report the simultaneous observations of the prompt emission in the gamma-ray and hard X-ray bands by the Swift-BAT and the KONUS-Wind instruments of the short-hard burst, GRB 060313. The observations reveal multiple peaks in both the gamma-ray and hard X-ray bands suggesting a highly variable outflow from the central explosion. We also describe the early-time observations of the X-ray and UV/Optical afterglows by the Swift XRT and UVOT instruments. The combination of the X-ray and UV/Optical observations provide the most comprehensive lightcurves to date of a short-hard burst at such an early epoch. The afterglows exhibit complex structure with different decay indices and flaring. This behavior can be explained by the combination of a structured jet, radiative loss of energy, and decreasing microphysics parameters occurring in a circum-burst medium with densities varying by a factor of approximately two on a length scale of 10^17 cm. These density variations are normally associated with the environment of a massive star and inhomogeneities in its windy medium. However, the mean density of the observed medium (n approximately 10^−4 cm^3) is much less than that expected for a massive star. Although the collapse of a massive star as the origin of GRB 060313 is unlikely, the merger of a compact binary also poses problems for explaining the behavior of this burst. Two possible suggestions for explaining this scenario are: some short bursts may arise from a mechanism that does not invoke the conventional compact binary model, or soft late-time central engine activity is producing UV/optical but no X-ray flaring., Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures. We present observations of GRB 060124, the first event for which both the prompt and the afterglow emission could be observed simultaneously and in their entirety by the three Swift instruments. Indeed, Swift-BAT triggered on a precursor ~570s before the main burst peak, and this allowed Swift to repoint the narrow field instruments to the burst position ~350s before the main burst occurred. GRB 060124 also triggered Konus-Wind, which observed the prompt emission in a harder gamma-ray band (up to 2MeV). Thanks to these exceptional circumstances, the temporal and spectral properties of the prompt emission can be studied in the optical, X-ray and gamma-ray ranges. While the X-ray emission (0.2-10keV) clearly tracks the gamma-ray burst, the optical component follows a different pattern, likely indicating a different origin, possibly the onset of external shocks. The prompt GRB spectrum shows significant spectral evolution, with both the peak energy and the spectral index varying. As observed in several long GRBs, significant lags are measured between the hard- and low-energy components, showing that this behaviour extends over 3 decades in energy. The GRB peaks are also much broader at soft energies. This is related to the temporal evolution of the spectrum, and can be accounted for by assuming that the electron spectral index softened with time. The burst energy (E_iso~5x10^{53} erg) and average peak energy (E_p~300keV) make GRB 060124 consistent with the Amati relation. We present observations of the unusually bright and long gamma-ray burst GRB 050820A, one of the best-sampled broadband data sets in the Swift era. The gamma-ray light curve is marked by a soft precursor pulse some 200 s before the main event; the lack of any intervening emission suggests that it is due to a physical mechanism distinct from the GRB itself. The large time lag between the precursor and the main emission enabled simultaneous observations in the gamma-ray, X-ray, and optical band-passes, something only achieved for a handful of events to date. While the contemporaneous X-rays are the low-energy tail of the prompt emission, the optical does not directly track the gamma-ray flux. Instead, the early-time optical data appear mostly consistent with the forward shock synchrotron peak passing through the optical, and are therefore likely the beginning of the afterglow. On hour time scales after the burst, the X-ray and optical light curves are inconsistent with an adiabatic expansion of the shock into the surrounding region, but rather indicate that there is a period of energy injection. Observations at late times allow us to constrain the collimation angle of the relativistic outflow to theta = 6.8 - 9.3 degrees. After nearly two years of quiescence, the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1900+14 again became burst-active on April 18 2001, when it emitted a large flare, preceded by few weak and soft short bursts. After having detected the X and gamma prompt emission of the flare, BeppoSAX pointed its narrow field X-ray telescopes to the source in less than 8 hours. In this paper we present an analysis of the data from this and from a subsequent BeppoSAX observation, as well as from a set of RossiXTE observations. Our data show the detection of an X-ray afterglow from the source, most likely related to the large hard X-ray flare. In fact, the persistent flux from the source, in 2-10 keV, was initially found at a level $\sim$5 times higher than the usual value. Assuming an underlying persistent (constant) emission, the decay of the excess flux can be reasonably well described by a t$^{-0.9}$ law. A temporal feature - a $\sim$half a day long bump - is observed in the decay light curve approximately one day after the burst onset. This feature is unprecedented in SGR afterglows. We present interplanetary network localization, spectral, and time history information for 7 episodes of exceptionally intense gamma-ray emission from Cygnus X-1. The outbursts occurred between 1995 and 2003, with durations up to \~28000 seconds. The observed 15 - 300 keV peak fluxes and fluences reached 3E-7 erg /cm2 s, and 8E-4 erg / cm2 respectively. By combining the triangulations of these outbursts we derive an ~1700 square arcminute (3 sigma) error ellipse which contains Cygnus X-1 and no other known high energy sources. The outbursts reported here occurred both when Cyg X-1 was in the hard state as well as in the soft one, and at various orbital phases. The spectral data indicate that these outbursts display the same parameters as those of the underlying hard and soft states, suggesting that they represent another manifestation of these states., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures. GRB 110918A is the brightest long GRB detected by Konus-WIND during its 19 years of continuous observations and the most luminous GRB ever observed since the beginning of the cosmological era in 1997. We report on the final IPN localization of this event and its detailed multiwavelength study with a number of space-based instruments. The prompt emission is characterized by a typical duration, a moderare $E_{peak}$ of the time-integrated spectrum, and strong hard-to-soft evolution. The high observed energy fluence yields, at z=0.984, a huge isotropic-equivalent energy release $E_{iso}=(2.1\pm0.1)\times10^{54}$ erg. The record-breaking energy flux observed at the peak of the short, bright, hard initial pulse results in an unprecedented isotropic-equivalent luminosity $L_{iso}=(4.7\pm0.2)\times10^{54}$erg s$^{-1}$. A tail of the soft gamma-ray emission was detected with temporal and spectral behavior typical of that predicted by the synchrotron forward-shock model. Swift/XRT and Swift/UVOT observed the bright afterglow from 1.2 to 48 days after the burst and revealed no evidence of a jet break. The post-break scenario for the afterglow is preferred from our analysis, with a hard underlying electron spectrum and ISM-like circumburst environment implied. We conclude that, among multiple reasons investigated, the tight collimation of the jet must have been a key ingredient to produce this unusually bright burst. The inferred jet opening angle of 1.7-3.4 deg results in reasonable values of the collimation-corrected radiated energy and the peak luminosity, which, however, are still at the top of their distributions for such tightly collimated events. We estimate a detection horizon for a similar ultraluminous GRB of $z\sim7.5$ for Konus-WIND, and $z\sim12$ for Swift/BAT, which stresses the importance of GRBs as probes of the early Universe., Comment: 22 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The extremely energetic (~10^-4 erg/cm^2) gamma-ray burst (GRB) of 1999 December 8 was triangulated to a ~14 sq. arcmin. error box ~1.8 d after its arrival at Earth with the 3rd interplanetary network (IPN), consisting of the Ulysses, Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR), and WIND spacecraft. Radio observations with the Very Large Array ~2.7 d after the burst revealed a bright fading counterpart whose position is consistent with that of an optical transient source whose redshift is z=0.707. We present the time history, peak flux, fluence, and refined 1.3 sq. arcmin. error box of this event, and discuss its energetics.
