The optical and UV properties of radio-quiet (RQ) and radio-loud (RL, relativistically “jetted”) active galactic nuclei (AGN) are known to differ markedly; however, it is still unclear what is due to a sample selection and what is associated with intrinsic differences in the inner workings of their emitting regions. Chemical composition is an important parameter related to the trends of the quasar main sequence. Recent works suggest that in addition to physical properties such as density, column density, and ionization level, strong Feii emitters require very high metal content. Little is known, however, about the chemical composition of jetted radio-loud sources. In this short note, we present a pilot analysis of the chemical composition of low-z radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars. Optical and UV spectra from ground and space were combined to allow for precise measurements of metallicity-sensitive diagnostic ratios. The comparison between radio-quiet and radio-loud was carried out for sources in the same domain of the Eigenvector 1/main sequence parameter space. Arrays of dedicated photo-ionization simulations with the input of appropriate spectral energy distributions indicate that metallicity is sub-solar for RL AGN, and slightly sub-solar or around solar for RQ AGN. The metal content of the broad line-emitting region likely reflects a similar enrichment story for both classes of AGN not involving recent circum-nuclear or nuclear starbursts.

We present high signal-to-noise, full polarization pulse profiles for 40 bright, 'slowly'-rotating (non-recycled) pulsars using the new Ultra-Wideband Low-frequency (UWL; 704-4032 MHz) receiver on the Parkes radio telescope. We obtain updated and accurate interstellar medium parameters towards these pulsars (dispersion measures and Faraday rotation measures), and reveal Faraday dispersion towards PSR J1721-3532 caused by interstellar scattering. We find general trends in the pulse profiles including decreasing fractional linear polarization and increasing degree of circular polarization with increasing frequency, consistent with previous studies, while also revealing new features and frequency evolution. This demonstrates results that can be obtained using UWL monitoring observations of slow pulsars, which are valuable for improving our understanding of pulsar emission and the intervening interstellar medium. High-mass stars are thought to accumulate much of their mass via short, infrequent bursts of disk-aided accretion. Such accretion events are rare and difficult to observe directly but are known to drive enhanced maser emission. In this Letter we report high-resolution, multi-epoch methanol maser observations toward G358.93-0.03 which reveal an interesting phenomenon; the sub-luminal propagation of a thermal radiation "heat-wave" emanating from an accreting high-mass proto-star. The extreme transformation of the maser emission implies a sudden intensification of thermal infrared radiation from within the inner (40 mas, 270 au) region. Subsequently, methanol masers trace the radial passage of thermal radiation through the environment at $\geq$ 4-8\% the speed of light. Such a high translocation rate contrasts with the $\leq$ 10 km s$^{-1}$ physical gas motions of methanol masers typically observed using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). The observed scenario can readily be attributed to an accretion event in the high-mass proto-star G358.93-0.03-MM1. While being the third case in its class, G358.93-0.03-MM1 exhibits unique attributes hinting at a possible `zoo' of accretion burst types. Galactic bars are important drivers of galactic evolution, and yet how they impact the interstellar medium and correspondingly star formation, remains unclear. We present simulation results for two barred galaxies with different formation mechanisms, bars formed in isolation or via a tidal interaction, to consider the spatially and temporally varying trends of star formation. We focus on the early (< 1Gyr) epoch of bar formation so that the interaction is clearly identifiable. The nearby NGC 4303 (isolated) and NGC 3627 (interaction history) are selected as observational analogues to tailor these simulations. Regardless of formation mechanism, both models show similar internal dynamical features, although the interaction appears to promote bar-arm disconnection in the outer disc velocity structure. Both bars trigger similar boosts in star formation (79%; 66%), while the interaction also triggers an earlier 31% burst. Significant morphological dependence is observed in the relation between surface gas and star formation rate. In both cases, the bar component is notably steepest; the arm is similar to the overall disc average; and the inter-arm clearly the shallowest. A distinguishable feature of the tidal disc is the presence of moderately dense, inefficiently star forming gas mostly confined to tidal debris outside the optical disc. The tidal disc also exhibits a unique trend of radially increasing star formation efficiency and a clear dearth of star formation which persists along the bar between the centre and bar ends. Multiphase astrochemical modeling presents a numerical challenge especially for the simulation of objects with the wide range of physical parameters such as protoplanetary disks. We demonstrate an implementation of the analytical Jacobian for the numerical integration of the system of differential rate equations that govern chemical evolution in star-forming regions. The analytical Jacobian allowed us to greatly improve the stability of the code in protoplanetary disk conditions. We utilize the MONACO code to study the evolution of abundances of chemical species in protoplanetary disks. The chemical model includes 670 species and 6,015 reactions in the gas phase and on interstellar grains. The specific feature of the utilized chemical model is the inclusion of low-temperature chemical processes leading to the formation of complex organic molecules (COMs), included previously in the models of chemistry of COMs in prestellar clouds. To test the impact of analytical Jacobian on the stability of numerical simulations of chemical evolution in protoplanetary disks, we calculated the chemical composition of the disk using a two-phase model and four variants of the chemical reaction network, three values of the surface diffusion rates, and two types of the initial chemical composition. The presence of charged dust grains is known to have a profound impact on the physical evolution of the multiphase interstellar medium (ISM). Despite its importance, this process is still poorly explored in numerical simulations due to its complex physics and the tight dependence on the environment. Here we introduce a novel implementation of grain charging in the cosmological radiative transfer code CRASH. We first benchmark the code predictions on a series of idealized dusty HII regions created by a single star, in order to assess the impact of grain properties on the resulting spatial distribution of charges. Second, we perform a realistic radiative transfer simulation of a star forming region extracted from a dusty galaxy evolving in the Epoch of Reionization. We find that $\sim 13$ % of the total dust mass gets negatively charged, mainly silicate and graphite grains of radius micron. A complex spatial distribution of grain charges is also found, primarily depending on the exposure to stellar radiation and strongly varying along different lines of sight, as a result of radiative transfer effects. We finally assess the impact of grain properties (both chemical composition and size) on the resulting charge distribution. Purpose: The analytical review of the main results of research in the new direction of the low-frequency radio astronomy, the interstellar medium radio spectroscopy at decameter waves, which had led to astrophysical discovery, recording of the radio recombination lines in absorption for highly excited states of interstellar carbon atoms (more than 600). Design/methodology/approach: The UTR-2 world-largest broadband radio telescope of decameter waves optimally connected with the digital correlation spectrum analyzers has been used. Continuous modernization of antenna system and devices allowed increasing the analysis band from 100 kHzto 24 MHz and a number of channels from 32 to 8192. The radio telescope and receiving equipment with appropriate software allowed to have a long efficient integration time enough for a large line series simultaneously with high resolution, noise immunity and relative sensitivity. Findings: A new type of interstellar spectral lines has been discovered and studied, the interstellar carbon radio recombination lines in absorption for the record high excited atoms with principal quantum numbers greater than 1000. The line parameters (intensity, shape, width, radial velocity) and their relation ship with the interstellar medium physical parameters have been determined. The temperature of line forming regions is about 100 K, the electron concentration up to 0.1 cm–3 and the size of a line forming region is about 10 pc. For the first time, radio recombination lines were observed in absorption. They have significant broadening and are amplified by the dielectronic-like recombination mechanism and are also the lowest frequency lines in atomic spectroscopy. Conclusions: The detected low-frequency carbon radio recombination lines and their observations have become a new highly effective tool for the cold partially ionized interstellar plasma diagnostics. Using them allows obtaining the information which is not available with the other astrophysical methods. For almost half a century of their research, a large amount of hardware-methodical and astrophysical results have been obtained including a record number of Galaxy objects, where there levant lines have been recorded. The domestic achievements have stimulated many theoretical and experimental studies in other countries, but the scientific achievements of Ukrainian scientists prove the best prospects for further development of this very important area of astronomical science. The detection of the 11.3-micron emission feature characteristic of the Si--C stretch in carbon-rich evolved stars reveals that silicon carbide (SiC) dust grains are condensed in the outflows of carbon stars. SiC dust could be a significant constituent of interstellar dust since it is generally believed that carbon stars inject a considerable amount of dust into the interstellar medium (ISM). The presence of SiC dust in the ISM is also supported by the identification of presolar SiC grains of stellar origin in primitive meteorites. However, the 11.3-micron absorption feature of SiC has never been seen in the ISM and oxidative destruction of SiC is often invoked. In this work we quantitatively explore the destruction of interstellar SiC dust through oxidation based on molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations. We find that the reaction of an oxygen atom with SiC molecules and clusters is exothermic and could cause CO-loss. Nevertheless, even if this is extrapolable to bulk SiC dust, the destruction rate of SiC dust through oxidation could still be considerably smaller than the (currently believed) injection rate from carbon stars. Therefore, the lack of the 11.3-micron absorption feature of SiC dust in the ISM remains a mystery. A possible solution may lie in the currently believed stellar injection rate of SiC (which may have been overestimated) and/or the size of SiC dust (which may actually be considerably smaller than submicron in size)., 7 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Relativistic jets can interact with the ambient gas distribution of the host galaxy, before breaking out to larger scales. In the past decade several studies have simulated jet-driven outflows to understand how they affect the nearby environment, and over what spatial and temporal scales such interactions occur. The simulations are able to capture the interaction of the jets with the turbulent clumpy interstellar medium and the resultant energetics of the gas. The ratio of the mass of interstellar dust to the total mass of metals (the dust-to-metals/DTM ratio) tends to increase with metallicity. This can be explained by the increasing efficiency of grain growth in the interstellar medium (ISM) at higher metallicities, with a corollary being that the low DTM ratios seen at low metallicities are due to inefficient stellar dust production. This interpretation assumes that the efficiency of dust destruction in the ISM is constant, whereas it might be expected to increase at low metallicity; the decreased cooling efficiency of low-metallicity gas should result in more post-shock dust destruction via thermal sputtering. We show that incorporating a sufficiently strong metallicity dependence into models of galaxy evolution removes the need for low stellar dust yields. The contribution of stellar sources to the overall dust budget may be significantly underestimated, and that of grain growth overestimated, by models assuming a constant destruction efficiency., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. We study the interstellar medium (ISM) properties as a function of the molecular gas size for 77 infrared-selected galaxies at $z \sim 1.3$. Molecular gas sizes are measured on ALMA images that combine CO(2-1), CO(5-4) and underlying continuum observations, and include CO(4-3), CO(7-6)+[CI]($^3 P_2-^3P_1$), [CI]($^3 P_1-^3P_0$) observations for a subset of the sample. The $\gtrsim 46 \%$ of our galaxies have a compact molecular gas reservoir, and lie below the optical disks mass-size relation. Compact galaxies on and above the main sequence have higher CO excitation and star formation efficiency than galaxies with extended molecular gas reservoirs, as traced by CO(5-4)/CO(2-1) and CO(2-1)/$L_{\rm IR, SF}$ ratios. Average CO+[CI] spectral line energy distributions indicate higher excitation in compacts relative to extended sources. Using CO(2-1) and dust masses as molecular gas mass tracers, and conversion factors tailored to their ISM conditions, we measure lower gas fractions in compact main-sequence galaxies compared to extended sources. We suggest that the sub-millimetre compactness, defined as the ratio between the molecular gas and the stellar size, is an unavoidable information to be used with the main sequence offset to describe the ISM properties of galaxies, at least above $M_{\star} \geqslant 10^{10.6}$ M$_{\odot}$, where our observations fully probe the main sequence scatter. Our results are consistent with mergers driving the gas in the nuclear regions, enhancing the CO excitation and star formation efficiency. The gamma-ray emission of RX J1713–3946, despite being extensively studied in the GeV and TeV domains, remains poorly understood. This is mostly because, in this range, two competing mechanisms can efficiently produce gamma-rays: the inverse Compton scattering of accelerated electrons, and interactions of accelerated protons with the nuclei of the interstellar medium (ISM). In addition to the acceleration of particles from the thermal pool, the re-acceleration of pre-existing cosmic rays is often overlooked, and has in fact also been taken into account. Especially, because of the distance to the SNR (∼1 kpc), and the low density in which the shock is currently expanding (∼10−2 cm−3), the re-acceleration of cosmic-ray electrons pre-existing in the ISM can account for a significant fraction of the observed gamma-ray emission, and contribute to the shaping of the spectrum in the GeV–TeV range. Remarkably, this emission of leptonic origin is found to be close to the level of the gamma-ray signal in the TeV range, provided that the spectrum of pre-exisiting cosmic-ray electrons is similar to that observed in the local ISM. The overall gamma-ray spectrum of RX J1713–3946 is naturally produced as the sum of leptonic emission from re-accelerated cosmic-ray electrons, and a subdominant hadronic emission from accelerated protons. We also argue that neutrino observations with next-generation detectors might lead to a detection even in the case of a lepto–hadronic origin of the gamma-ray emission.

Meteor physics can provide new clues about the size, structure, and density of cometary disintegration products, establishing a bridge between different research fields. From meteor magnitude data we have estimated the mass distribution of meteoroids from different cometary streams by using the relation between the luminosity and the mass obtained by Verniani. These mass distributions are in the range observed for dust particles released from comets 1P/Halley and 81P/Wild 2 as measured from spacecraft. From the derived mass distributions, we have integrated the incoming mass for the most significant meteor showers. By comparing the mass of the collected interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) with that derived for cometary meteoroids a gap of several orders of magnitude is encountered. The largest examples of fluffy particles are clusters of IDPs no larger than 100 μm in size (or 5 × 10–7 g in mass) while the largest cometary meteoroids are centimeter-sized objects. Such gaps can be explained by the fragmentation in the atmosphere of the original cometary particles. As an application of the mass distribution computations we describe the significance of the disruption of fragile comets in close approaches to Earth as a more efficient (and probably more frequent) way to deliver volatiles than direct impacts. Faraday rotation measures (RMs) should be interpreted with caution because there could be multiple magneto-ionized medium components that contribute to the net Faraday rotation along sightlines. We introduce a simple test using Galactic diffuse polarized emission that evaluates whether structures evident in RM observations are associated with distant circumgalactic medium or foreground interstellar medium. We focus on the Magellanic Leading Arm region where a clear excess of RM was previously reported. There are two gaseous objects standing out in this direction: the distant Magellanic Leading Arm and the nearby Antlia supernova remnant (SNR). We recognized narrow depolarized filaments in the $2.3\, \rm GHz$ S-band Polarization All Sky Survey image that overlaps with the reported RM excess. We suggest that there is a steep gradient in Faraday rotation in a foreground screen arising from the Antlia SNR. The estimated strength of the line-of-sight component of the magnetic field is $B_{\parallel }\sim 5\, \rm \mu G$, assuming that the excess of RM is entirely an outcome of the magnetized supernova shell. Our analysis indicates that the overlap between the RM excess and the Magellanic Leading Arm is only a remarkable coincidence. We suggest for future RM grid studies that checking Galactic diffuse polarization maps is a convenient way to identify local Faraday screens.

It is a fact that interstellar formation processes are thermodynamically affected. Based on this, the seven heterocycles; imidazole, pyridine, pyrimidine, pyrrole, quinoline, isoquinoline and furan that have been searched for from different astronomical sources with only upper limits of their column density determined without any successful detection remain the best candidates for astronomical observation with respect to their isomers. These molecules are believed to be formed on the surface of the interstellar dust grains and as such, they are susceptible to interstellar hydrogen bonding. In this study, a two way approach using ab initio quantum chemical simulations is considered in optimizing the searches for these molecules in interstellar medium. Firstly, these molecules and their isomers are subjected to the effect of interstellar hydrogen bonding. Secondly, the deuterated analogues of these heterocycles are examined for their possible detectability. From the results, all the heterocycles except furan are found to be strongly bonded to the surfaces of the interstellar dust grains thereby reducing their abundances, thus contributing to their unsuccessful detection. Successful detection of furan remains highly feasible. With respect to their D-analogues, the computed Boltzmann factor indicates that they are formed under the dense molecular cloud conditions where major deuterium fractionation dominates implying very high D/H ratio above the cosmic D/H ratio which suggests the detectability of these deuterated species., Comment: Accepted for publication in "Advances in Space Research"

We present a joint analysis of the galaxy S04590 at z = 8.496 based on NIRSpec, NIRCam, and NIRISS observations obtained as part of the Early Release Observations program of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the far-infrared [C ii] 158 mu m emission line detected by dedicated Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations. We determine the physical properties of S04590 from modeling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and through the redshifted optical nebular emission lines detected with JWST/NIRSpec. The best-fit SED model reveals a low-mass (M-? = 10(7.2)-10(8) M-?) galaxy with a low oxygen abundance of derived from the strong nebular and auroral emission lines. Assuming that [C ii] effectively traces the interstellar medium, we estimate the total gas mass of the galaxy to be M-gas = (8.0 +/- 4.0) x 10(8) M-? based on the luminosity and spatial extent of [C ii]. This yields an exceptionally high gas fraction, f(gas) = M-gas/(M-gas + M-?) ? 90%, though one still consistent with the range expected for low metallicity. We further derive the metal mass of the galaxy based on the gas mass and gas-phase metallicity, which we find to be consistent with the expected metal production from Type II supernovae. Finally, we make the first constraints on the dust-to-gas (DTG) and dust-to-metal (DTM) ratios of galaxies in the epoch of reionization at z ? 6, showing overall low mass ratios of logDTG < -3.8 and logDTM < -0.5, though they are consistent with established scaling relations and in particular with those of the local metal-poor galaxy I Zwicky 18. 20 pags., 6 figs., 1 tab., A large fraction of interstellar carbon is locked up in solid grains. The nature, origin and evolution of these grains have been investigated for decades. A combination of observations, models and experiments indicates that carbonaceous dust is mostly made of a mixture of grains composed almost exclusively of carbon and hydrogen. They have different proportions of aliphatic and aromatic structures, and a variable H/C ratio. Their sizes can vary typically between the nm and the hundreds of nm. Carbonaceous grains are largely formed in the envelopes of carbon rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and evolve in the interstellar medium, where they can be transformed or destroyed by the effects of hydrogen atoms, UV radiation, cosmic rays or shock waves from supernovae. Surviving grains eventually enter dense clouds and participate in the cloud collapse leading to star formation, closing thus their lifecycle. Within this general picture, there are doubts and issues that cannot be solved just by observation and modeling and require laboratory work. In this article we provide an overview of the development and present state of the field indicating open problems and debated questions. The PHANGS collaboration has been building a reference data set for the multiscale, multiphase study of star formation and the interstellar medium (ISM) in nearby galaxies. With the successful launch and commissioning of JWST, we can now obtain high-resolution infrared imaging to probe the youngest stellar populations and dust emission on the scales of star clusters and molecular clouds (∼5–50 pc). In Cycle 1, PHANGS is conducting an eight-band imaging survey from 2 to 21 μm of 19 nearby spiral galaxies. Optical integral field spectroscopy, CO(2–1) mapping, and UV-optical imaging for all 19 galaxies have been obtained through large programs with ALMA, VLT-MUSE, and Hubble. PHANGS–JWST enables a full inventory of star formation, accurate measurement of the mass and age of star clusters, identification of the youngest embedded stellar populations, and characterization of the physical state of small dust grains. When combined with Hubble catalogs of ∼10,000 star clusters, MUSE spectroscopic mapping of ∼20,000 H II regions, and ∼12,000 ALMA-identified molecular clouds, it becomes possible to measure the timescales and efficiencies of the earliest phases of star formation and feedback, build an empirical model of the dependence of small dust grain properties on local ISM conditions, and test our understanding of how dust-reprocessed starlight traces star formation activity, all across a diversity of galactic environments. We present a set of multiwavelength mosaics and photometric catalogs in the Atacama Large Millimeter/ submillimeter Array (ALMA) lensing cluster survey fields. The catalogs were built by the reprocessing of archival data from the Complete Hubble Archive for Galaxy Evolution compilation, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey, Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble, and Hubble Frontier Fields. Additionally, we have reconstructed the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera 3.6 and 4.5 μm mosaics, by utilizing all the available archival IPAC Infrared Science Archive/Spitzer Heritage Archive exposures. To alleviate the effect of blending in such a crowded region, we have modeled the Spitzer photometry by convolving the HST detection image with the Spitzer point-spread function using the novel GOLFIR software. The final catalogs contain 218,000 sources, covering a combined area of 690 arcmin2, a factor of ∼2 improvement over the currently existing photometry. A large number of detected sources is a result of reprocessing of all available and sometimes deeper exposures, in conjunction with a combined optical–near-IR detection strategy. These data will serve as an important tool in aiding the search of the submillimeter galaxies in future ALMA surveys, as well as follow-ups of the HST dark and high-z sources with JWST. Coupled with the available HST photometry, the addition of the 3.6 and 4.5 μm bands will allow us to place a better constraint on the photometric redshifts and stellar masses of these objects, thus giving us an opportunity to identify high-redshift candidates for spectroscopic follow-ups and to answer the important questions regarding the Epoch of Reionization and formation of the first galaxies. Similarities exist between the infrared spectra of diamondoids and unidentified infrared emission bands seen in the spectra of young stars with circumstellar disks. Due to their low ionization energy and absorption in the visible range, the radical cations of these highly stable molecules are also suggested to contribute to the well-known but largely unassigned diffuse interstellar bands. However, thus far only the optical spectrum of the adamantane cation (Ada+) has been measured in the laboratory, which is required for astronomical identification. Herein, we present the optical spectrum of the diamantane radical cation (C14H20 +, Dia+, D 3d) between 400 and 1000 nm in the gas phase. The spectra are obtained by electronic photodissociation (EPD) of mass-selected ions generated by electron ionization and trapping in a cryogenic trap at 5 K. The most intense fragmentation channels are the losses of H and C4H9. The optical spectrum reveals two broad and unresolved bands centered near 760 and 450 nm that are assigned to the D 2(2 E u) ← D 0(2 A 1g) and D 5(2 A 2u) ← D 0(2 A 1g) transitions using density functional theory. Despite a vibrational temperature below 20 K, no vibrational structure is resolved. Franck–Condon simulations of the D 5 ← D 0 transition predict intense vibronic progressions that become indiscernible from the band contour at spectral widths above 350 cm−1. Thus, the lack of resolved spectral features is attributed to lifetime broadening, Franck–Condon congestion arising from geometric changes, and possibly vibronic coupling. In addition to the EPD spectra, we characterize the ground state of Dia+ by analysis of a remeasured photoelectron spectrum and a predicted infrared spectrum.

The morphology of gas-rich disc galaxies at redshift ~1-3 is dominated by a few massive clumps. The process of formation or assembly of these clumps and their relation to molecular clouds in contemporary spiral galaxies are still unknown. Using simulations of isolated disc galaxies, we study how the structure of the interstellar medium and the stability regime of the discs change when varying the gas fraction. In all galaxies, the stellar component is the main driver of instabilities. However, the molecular gas plays a non-negligible role in the inter-clumps medium of gas-rich cases, and thus in the assembly of the massive clumps. At scales smaller than a few 100 pc, the Toomre-like disc instabilities are replaced by another regime, specially in the gas-rich galaxies. We find that galaxies at low gas fraction (10%) stand apart from discs with more gas, which all share similar properties on virtually all the aspects we explore. For gas fractions below approximately 20%, the clump-scale regime of instabilities disappears, only leaving the large-scale disc-driven regime. When translating the change of gas fraction to the cosmic evolution of galaxies, this transition marks the end of the clumpy phase of disc galaxies, and allows for the onset of spiral structures, as commonly found in the local Universe., 19 pages, MNRAS accepted

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of great astrochemical and astrobiological interest due to their potential to form prebiotic molecules. We analyse the 7.7 and 8.6 ${\mu}$m PAH bands in 126 predominantly starburst-dominated galaxies extracted from the Spitzer/IRS ATLAS project. Based on the peak positions of these bands, we classify them into the different A, B, and C Peeters' classes, which allows us to address the potential characteristics of the PAH emitting population. We compare this analysis with previous work focused on the 6.2 ${\mu}$m PAH band for the same sample. For the first time in the literature, this statistical analysis is performed on a sample of galaxies. In our sample, the 7.7 ${\mu}$m complex is equally distributed in A and B object's class while the 8.6 ${\mu}$m band presents more B class sources. Moreover, 39 per cent of the galaxies were distributed into A class objects for both 6.2 and 7.7 ${\mu}$m bands and only 18 per cent received the same A classification for the three bands. The "A A A" galaxies presented higher temperatures and less dust in their interstellar medium. Considering the redshift range covered by our sample, the distribution of the three bands into the different Peeters' classes reveals a potential cosmological evolution in the molecular nature of the PAHs that dominate the interstellar medium in these galaxies, where B class objects seem to be more frequent at higher redshifts and, therefore, further studies have to be addressed., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

Dust has been detected in high-redshift ($z>5$) galaxies but its origin is still being debated. Dust production in high-redshift galaxies could be dominated by stellar production or by accretion (dust growth) in the interstellar medium. Previous studies have shown that these two dust sources predict different grain size distributions, which lead to significantly different extinction curves. In this paper, we investigate how the difference in the extinction curves affects the dust attenuation properties of galaxies by performing radiative transfer calculations. To examine the major effects of the dust--stars distribution geometry, we adopt two representative cases in spherical symmetry: the well-mixed geometry (stars and dust are homogeneously mixed) and the two-layer geometry (young stars are more concentrated in the centre). In both cases, we confirm that the attenuation curve can be drastically steepened by scattering and by different optical depths between young and old stellar populations, and can be flattened by the existence of unobscured stellar populations. We can reproduce similar attenuation curves even with very different extinction curves. Thus, we conclude that it is difficult to distinguish the dust sources only with attenuation curves. However, if we include information on dust emission and plot the IRX (infrared excess)--$\beta$ (ultraviolet spectral slope) relation, different dust sources predict different positions in the IRX--$\beta$ diagram. There are regular magnetic fields with inductions of several microgauss observed in numerous galaxies. The generation of these fields is explained by the dynamo associated with motions of the interstellar medium in appropriate objects. The growth of magnetic fields is exponential and these become stabilized when the equipartition of energy between magnetic fields and turbulent motions is reached. For starting this generation mechanism, some initial “seed” magnetic fields are necessary, and these fields are not explained within the dynamo theory. Among approaches explaining the magnetic fields in galaxies, there is the so-called Biermann battery mechanism. This mechanism relates to fluxes of protons and electrons flowing from the central portion of the object, with these fluxes being dragged by rotational motions of the medium. This results in circular currents, which are different for various particles due to their different masses. The total current becomes nonzero and generates the magnetic field. Some simple estimates of the strength of such a field were found earlier. In the present work, we have constructed a self-consistent model and derived an integral equation, which permits both to determine the order of magnitude of the initial magnetic field and to study in detail its spatial structure.

Aminomethanol (NH2CH2OH) and N-Methylhydroxylamine (CH3NHOH) are isomers of each other, and have astrochemical importance. To our knowledge, they have not been analyzed so far in any terrestrial laboratory, and probably due to non-availability of accurate frequencies, they have not been searched in a cosmic object. It is well known that physical conditions in cosmic objects are very different as compared to those in our terrestrial laboratories. Therefore, these molecules may exist in the interstellar medium. For having information about the potential spectral lines of these molecules, we have obtained their rotational and centrifugal distortion constants, and electric dipole moment with the help of the GAUSSIAN software using B3LYP method, and aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets, separately. As the electric dipole moment has comparable components along all the three a, b and c axes, we have considered all the three types of radiative transitions together, and have calculated radiative transition probabilities for all the three kinds of radiative transitions. Considering a, b and c type transitions together, we have performed Sobolev LVG analysis of each molecule, where the collisional rate coefficients have been obtained using a scaling law. Considering energy levels up to 300 cm-1, we have found 181 weak MASER lines and 112 anomalous absorption transitions of NH2CH2OH, and 21 weak MASER lines and 28 anomalous absorption transitions of CH3NHOH, which may play important role for the identification of respective molecule in the ISM.

A comparative analysis of the observational characteristics of fast radio bursts at the frequencies 111 and 1400 MHz is carried out. The distributions of radio bursts by the dispersion measure are constructed. At both frequencies, they are described by a lognormal distribution with the parameters $\mu =6.2$ $\sigma = 0.7$. The dependence $\tau_{sc}(DM)$ of the scattering value on the dispersion measure at 111 MHz and 1400 MHz is also constructed. This dependence is fundamentally different from the dependence for pulsars. A comparative analysis of the relationship between the scattering of pulses and the dispersion measure at 1400 MHz and 111 MHz showed that for both frequencies it has the form $\tau_{sc}(DM)\sim DM^k$, where $k = 0.49 \pm 0.18$ and $k = 0.43 \pm 0.15$ for the frequencies 111 and 1400 MHz, respectively. The obtained dependence is explained within the framework of the assumption of the extragalactic occurrence of fast radio bursts and an almost uniform distribution of matter in intergalactic space. From the dependence $\tau_{sc}(DM)$ a total estimate of the contribution to the matter of the halo of our and the host galaxy to $DM$ is obtained $DM_{halo} + \frac{DM_{host}}{1+z}\approx 60\;{\rm pc/cm}^3$. Based on the LogN - LogS dependence, the average spectral index of radio bursts is derived $\alpha = - 0.63 \pm 0.20$ provided that the statistical properties of these samples at 111 and 1400 MHz are the same., Comment: 47 pages, 25 figures, 3 tables

Models for the abundances of phosphorus-bearing molecules, such as PO and PN, rely on rate coefficients guessed from similar reactions of NO. Given the importance of these molecules in pre-biotic chemistry, in this work we carry out accurate multireference configuration interaction calculations on the N+PO and O+PN reactions, unravelling their underlying mechanisms and potential energy barriers. The collisions may occur in two triplet electronic states and involve six potential wells lying under the N+PO limit. The interaction between atomic nitrogen and PO is shown to occur barrierlessly only when dynamical correlation is included in the calculations. The theoretical results confirm the assumptions used in the astrochemical models that depletion of PO by nitrogen atoms occurs fast, with a branching ratio largely favouring O+PN over the more exothermic P+NO. Among other results, we predict that PN should be stable with respect to collisions with oxygen atoms under low-temperature environments, but will be depleted to P + NO in shocks and other conditions with higher translational energies.

The search for life-supporting molecules in outer space is an ever-growing endeavour. Towards this, the computational chemistry supporting the astronomical spectroscopic observations is becoming a valuable tool to unravel the complex chemical network in interstellar medium (ISM). In the present work, quantum-mechanical computations, accounting for anharmonic effects, are performed to obtain the rotational and vibrational line-data for the gas-phase conformers of proteinogenic amino acid Leucine and its isomeric species predicted to be involved in its stereoinversion under the extreme environment of ISM. These species exhibit diverse chemistry including branched skeleton and zwitterionic ammonium ylides. A few of the species have significantly high dipole moment, which can act as tracer for the conformers of Leucine having low dipole moment. Besides this, the species, which are terrestrially less stable, can be of significant importance to the astronomers. Notably, the spectral database generated in this work can assist in the detection of proteinogenic Leucine and its isomeric species in different regions of ISM.

Magnetic fields are an important component of the interstellar medium (ISM) and exhibit strongly varying field strengths and a non-trivial correlation with the gas density. Its dynamical impact varies between individual regions of the ISM and correlates with the orientation of the field with respect to the gas structures. Using high-resolution magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of the ISM we explore the connection between the orientation of the field and the dynamical state of the gas. We find that the onset of gravitational instability in molecular gas above a density of $\rho\sim10^{-21}\,\mathrm{g\,cm^{-3}}$ $(n\sim400\,\mathrm{cm^{-3}})$ coincides with an alignment of the magnetic field lines and the gas flow. At this transition the gradient of the density changes from mainly perpendicular to preferentially parallel to the field lines. A connection between the three-dimensional alignment and projected two-dimensional observables is non-trivial, because of a large dispersion of the magnetic field orientation along the line of sight. The turbulent correlation lengths can be small compared to the typical integration lengths. As a consequence the small scale signal of the orientation can sensitively depend on the line of sight or the dynamical state of the cloud, can fluctuate stochastically or be completely averaged out. Gravitational microlensing has become a mature technique for discovering small gravitational lenses in the Universe which are otherwise beyond our detection limits. Similarly, plasma microlensing can help us explore cosmic plasma lenses. Both pulsar scintillation and extreme scattering events of compact radio sources suggest the existence of $\sim$ AU scale plasma lenses in the ionized interstellar medium (IISM), whose astrophysical correspondence remains a mystery. We demonstrate that plasma microlensing events by these plasma lenses recorded in the form of wide-band dynamic spectra are a powerful probe of their nature. Using the recently developed Picard-Lefschetz integrator for the Kirchhoff-Fresnel integral, we simulate such dynamic spectra for a well-motivated family of single-variable plasma lenses. We demonstrate that the size, strength, and shape of the plasma lens can be measured from the location of the cusp point and the shape of spectral caustics respectively, with a combination of distances and the effective velocity known a priori or measured from the widths of the interference pattern. Future wide-band observations of pulsars, whose plasma microlensing events may be predictable from parabolic arc monitoring, are the most promising ground to apply our results for a deeper insight into the fine structures in the IISM., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, published in MNRAS

We study the enrichment of the interstellar medium with rapid neutron capture (r-process) elements produced in binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. We use a semi-analytic model to describe galactic evolution, with merger rates and time delay distributions of BNS mergers consistent with the latest population synthesis models. In order to study the dispersion of the relative abundances of r-process elements and iron, we applied a turbulent mixing scheme, where the freshly synthesized elements are gradually dispersed in the interstellar medium. We show that within our model the abundances observed in Milky-Way stars, in particular the scatter at low metallicities, can be entirely explained by BNS mergers. Our results suggest that binary neutron star mergers could be the dominant source of r-process elements in the Galaxy., Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures. A significative fraction of all massive stars in the Milky Way move supersonically through their local interstellar medium (ISM), producing bow shock nebulae by wind-ISM interaction. The stability of these observed astrospheres around cool massive stars challenges precedent two-dimensional (magneto-)hydrodynamical simulations of their surroundings. We present three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamical (3D MHD) simulations of the circumstellar medium of runaway M-type red supergiant stars moving with velocity v_star= 50 km/s. We treat the stellar wind with a Parker spiral and assume a 7 microG magnetisation of the ISM. Our free parameter is the angle theta_mag between ISM flow and magnetisation, taken to 0, 45 and 90 degrees. It is found that simulation dimension, coordinate systems and grid effects can greatly affect the development of the modelled astrospheres. Nevertheless, as soon as the ISM flow and magnetisation directions differs by more than a few degrees (theta_mag>5 degree), the bow shock is stabilised, most clumpiness and ragged structures vanishing. The complex shape of the bowshocks induce important projection effects, e.g. at optical Ha line, producing complex of astrospheric morphologies. We speculate that those effects are also at work around earlier-type massive stars, which would explain their diversity of their observed arc-like nebula around runaway OB stars. Our 3D MHD models are fitting well observations of the astrospheres of several runaway red supergiant stars. The results interpret the smoothed astrosphere of IRC-10414 and Betelgeuse aOri) are stabilised by an organised, non-parallel ambient magnetic field. Our findings suggest that IRC-10414 is currently in a steady state of its evolution, and that Betelgeuse's bar is of interstellar origin., Accepted to MNRAS

The ESA Gaia astrometric mission has enabled the remarkable discovery that a large fraction of the stars near the Solar neighbourhood appear to be debris from a single in-falling system, the so-called Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage (GSE). One exciting feature of this result is that it gives astronomers for the first time a large sample of easily observable unevolved stars that formed in an extra-Galactic environment, which can be compared to stars that formed within our Milky Way. Here we use these stars to investigate the "Spite Plateau" -- the near-constant lithium abundance observed in metal-poor dwarf stars across a wide range of metallicities (-3, Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, updated version resubmitted to MNRAS after responding to positive referee report. We report here the first detection in the interstellar medium of the cyanomidyl radical (HNCN). Using the Yebes 40m and the IRAM 30m telescopes, we have targeted the doublets of the $N$=2$-$1, 4$-$3, 5$-$4, 6$-$5, and 7$-$6 transitions of HNCN toward the molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027. We have detected three unblended lines of HNCN, these are the $N$=6$-$5 doublet and one line of the $N$=4$-$3 transition. Additionally we present one line of the $N$=5$-$4 transition partially blended with emission from other species. The Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium best fit to the data gives a molecular abundance of (0.91$\pm$0.05)$\times$10$^{-10}$ with respect to H$_2$. The relatively low abundance of this species in G+0.693-0.027, and its high reactivity, suggest that HNCN is possibly produced by gas-phase chemistry. Our work shows that this highly reactive molecule is present in interstellar space, and thus it represents a plausible precursor of larger prebiotic molecules with the NCN backbone such as cyanamide (NH$_2$CN), carbodiimide (HNCNH) and formamidine (NH$_2$CHNH)., Accepted in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letters

Mechanisms of particle heating are crucial to understanding the shock physics in supernova remnants (SNRs). However, there has been little information on time variabilities of thermalized particles so far. Here, we present a discovery of a gradually-brightening thermal X-ray emission found in Chandra data of Tycho's SNR obtained during 2000--2015. The emission exhibits a knot-like feature (Knot1) with a diameter of $\simeq0.04$~pc located in the northwestern limb, where we also find localized H$\alpha$ filaments in an optical image taken with the Hubble Space Telescope in 2008. The model with the solar abundance reproduces the spectra of Knot1, suggesting that Knot1 originates from interstellar medium; this is the first detection of thermal X-ray emission from swept-up gas found in Tycho's SNR. Our spectral analysis indicates that the electron temperature of Knot1 has increased from $\sim0.30$ keV to $\sim0.69$ keV within the period between 2000 and 2015. These results lead us to ascribe the time-variable emission to a small dense clump recently heated by the forward shock at the location of Knot1. The electron-to-proton temperature ratio immediately downstream the shock ($\beta_{0}\equiv T_e/T_p$) is constrained to be $m_e/m_p\leq\beta_{0}\leq0.15$ to reproduce the data, indicating the collisionless electron heating with efficiency consistent with previous H$\alpha$ observations of Tycho and other SNRs with high shock velocities., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Vela X-1 is a runaway X-ray binary system hosting a massive donor star, whose strong stellar wind creates a bow shock as it interacts with the interstellar medium. This bow shock has previously been detected in H$\alpha$ and IR, but, similar to all but one bow shock from a massive runaway star (BD+43$^{\rm o}$3654), has escaped detection in other wavebands. We report on the discovery of $1.3$ GHz radio emission from the Vela X-1 bow shock with the MeerKAT telescope. The MeerKAT observations reveal how the radio emission closely traces the H$\alpha$ line emission, both in the bow shock and in the larger-scale diffuse structures known from existing H$\alpha$ surveys. The Vela X-1 bow shock is the first stellar-wind-driven radio bow shock detected around an X-ray binary. In the absence of a radio spectral index measurement, we explore other avenues to constrain the radio emission mechanism. We find that thermal/free-free emission can account for the radio and H$\alpha$ properties, for a combination of electron temperature and density consistent with earlier estimates of ISM density and the shock enhancement. In this explanation, the presence of a local ISM over-density is essential for the detection of radio emission. Alternatively, we consider a non-thermal/synchrotron scenario, evaluating the magnetic field and broad-band spectrum of the shock. However, we find that exceptionally high fractions ($\gtrsim 13$%) of the kinetic wind power would need to be injected into the relativistic electron population to explain the radio emission. Assuming lower fractions implies a hybrid scenario, dominated by free-free radio emission. International audience; Low-energy cosmic rays (up to the GeV energy domain) play a crucial role in the physics and chemistry of the densest phase of the interstellar medium. Unlike interstellar ionising radiation, they can penetrate large column densities of gas, and reach molecular cloud cores. By maintaining there a small but not negligible gas ionisation fraction, they dictate the coupling between the plasma and the magnetic field, which in turn affects the dynamical evolution of clouds and impacts on the process of star and planet formation. The cosmic-ray ionisation of molecular hydrogen in interstellar clouds also drives the rich interstellar chemistry revealed by observations of spectral lines in a broad region of the electromagnetic spectrum, spanning from the submillimetre to the visual band. Some recent developments in various branches of astrophysics provide us with an unprecedented view on low-energy cosmic rays. Accurate measurements and constraints on the intensity of such particles are now available both for the very local interstellar medium and for distant interstellar clouds. The interpretation of these recent data is currently debated, and the emerging picture calls for a reassessment of the scenario invoked to describe the origin and/or the transport of low-energy cosmic rays in the Galaxy.

We use medium-resolution Keck/Echellette Spectrograph and Imager spectroscopy of bright quasars to study cool gas traced by CaII 3934,3969 and NaI 5891,5897 absorption in the interstellar/circumgalactic media of 21 foreground star-forming galaxies at redshifts 0.03 < z < 0.20 with stellar masses 7.4 < log M_*/M_sun < 10.6. The quasar-galaxy pairs were drawn from a unique sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar spectra with intervening nebular emission, and thus have exceptionally close impact parameters (R_perp < 13 kpc). The strength of this line emission implies that the galaxies' star formation rates (SFRs) span a broad range, with several lying well above the star-forming sequence. We use Voigt profile modeling to derive column densities and component velocities for each absorber, finding that column densities N(CaII) > 10^12.5 cm^-2 (N(NaI) > 10^12.0 cm^-2) occur with an incidence f_C(CaII) = 0.63^+0.10_-0.11 (f_C(NaI) = 0.57^+0.10_-0.11). We find no evidence for a dependence of f_C or the rest-frame equivalent widths W_r(CaII K) or W_r(NaI 5891) on R_perp or M_*. Instead, W_r(CaII K) is correlated with local SFR at >3sigma significance, suggesting that CaII traces star formation-driven outflows. While most of the absorbers have velocities within +/-50 km/s of the host redshift, their velocity widths (characterized by Delta v_90) are universally 30-177 km/s larger than that implied by tilted-ring modeling of the velocities of interstellar material. These kinematics must trace galactic fountain flows and demonstrate that they persist at R_perp > 5 kpc. Finally, we assess the relationship between dust reddening and W_r(CaII K) (W_r(NaI 5891)), finding that 33% (24%) of the absorbers are inconsistent with the best-fit Milky Way E(B-V)-W_r relations at >3sigma significance., 38 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables. We present the average [C ii] 158 μm emission line sizes of UV-bright star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 7. Our results are derived from a stacking analysis of [C ii] 158 μm emission lines and dust continua observed by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), taking advantage of the large program Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey. We find that the average [C ii] emission at z ∼ 7 has an effective radius r e of 2.2 ± 0.2 kpc. It is ≳2× larger than the dust continuum and the rest-frame UV emission, in agreement with recently reported measurements for z ≲ 6 galaxies. Additionally, we compared the average [C ii] size with 4 < z < 6 galaxies observed by the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [C ii] at Early times (ALPINE). By analyzing [C ii] sizes of 4 < z < 6 galaxies in two redshift bins, we find an average [C ii] size of r e = 2.2 ± 0.2 kpc and r e = 2.5 ± 0.2 kpc for z ∼ 5.5 and z ∼ 4.5 galaxies, respectively. These measurements show that star-forming galaxies, on average, show no evolution in the size of the [C ii] 158 μm emitting regions at redshift between z ∼ 7 and z ∼ 4. This finding suggests that the star-forming galaxies could be morphologically dominated by gas over a wide redshift range.

The neutral atomic gas content of individual galaxies at large cosmological distances has until recently been difficult to measure due to the weakness of the hyperfine H i 21 cm transition. Here we estimate the H i gas mass of a sample of main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 6.5–7.8 surveyed for [C ii] 158 μm emission as part of the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS), using a recent calibration of the [C ii]-to-H i conversion factor. We find that the H i gas mass excess in galaxies increases as a function of redshift, with an average of M Hi /M ⋆ ≈ 10, corresponding to H i gas mass fractions of f Hi = M Hi /(M ⋆ + M Hi ) = 90%, at z ≈ 7. Based on the [C ii] 158 μm luminosity function (LF) derived from the same sample of galaxies, we further place constraints on the cosmic H i gas mass density in galaxies (ρ Hi ) at this redshift, which we measure to be ρ H I = 7.1 − 3.0 + 6.4 × 10 6 M ⊙ Mpc − 3 . This estimate is substantially lower by a factor of ≈10 than that inferred from an extrapolation of damped Lyα absorber (DLA) measurements and largely depends on the exact [C ii] LF adopted. However, we find this decrease in ρ Hi to be consistent with recent simulations and argue that this apparent discrepancy is likely a consequence of the DLA sight lines predominantly probing the substantial fraction of H i gas in high-z galactic halos, whereas [C ii] traces the H i in the ISM associated with star formation. We make predictions for this buildup of neutral gas in galaxies as a function of redshift, showing that at z ≳ 5, only ≈10% of the cosmic H i gas content is confined in galaxies and associated with the star-forming ISM.

The contribution of galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) to the origin of cosmic rays (CRs) is an important open question in modern astrophysics. Broadband non-thermal emission is a useful proxy for probing the energy budget and production history of CRs in SNRs. We conduct hydrodynamic simulations to model the long-term SNR evolution from explosion all the way to the radiative phase (or $3\times10^5$ yrs at maximum), and compute the time evolution of the broadband non-thermal spectrum to explore its potential applications on constraining the surrounding environments as well as the natures and mass-loss histories of the SNR progenitors. A parametric survey is performed on the ambient environments separated into two main groups, namely a homogeneous medium with a uniform gas density and one with the presence of a circumstellar structure created by the stellar wind of a massive red-supergiant (RSG) progenitor star. Our results reveal a highly diverse evolution history of the non-thermal emission closely correlated to the environmental characteristics of a SNR. Up to the radiative phase, the roles of CR re-acceleration and ion-neutral wave damping on the spectral evolution are investigated. Finally, we make an assessment of the future prospect of SNR observations by the next-generation hard X-ray space observatory FORCE and predict what we can learn from their comparison with our evolution models., 27 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present spatially-resolved morphological properties of [CII] 158 $\mu$m, [OIII] 88 $\mu$m, dust, and rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum emission for A1689-zD1, a strongly lensed, sub-L* galaxy at $z=7.13$, by utilizing deep Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations. While the [OIII] line and UV continuum are compact, the [CII] line is extended up to a radius of $r \sim 12$ kpc. Using multi-band rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) continuum data ranging from 52-400 $\mu$m, we find an average dust temperature and emissivity index of $T_{\rm dust} = 41^{+17}_{-14}$ K and $\beta = 1.7^{+1.1}_{-0.7}$, respectively, across the galaxy. We find slight differences in the dust continuum profiles at different wavelengths, which may indicate that the dust temperature decreases with distance. We map the star-formation rate (SFR) via IR and UV luminosities and determine a total SFR of $37\pm 1~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ with an obscured fraction of $87\%$. While the [OIII] line is a good tracer of the SFR, the [CII] line shows deviation from the local $L_{\rm [CII]}$-SFR relations in the outskirts of the galaxy. Finally, we observe a clear difference in the line profile between [CII] and [OIII], with significant residuals ($\sim 5\sigma$) in the [OIII] line spectrum after subtracting a single Gaussian model. This suggests a possible origin of the extended [CII] structure from the cooling of hot ionized outflows. The extended [CII] and high-velocity [OIII] emission may both contribute in part to the high $L_{\rm [OIII]}$/$L_{\rm [CII]}$ ratios recently reported in $z>6$ galaxies., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, accepted to ApJ, presented at AAS240

Recent high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy revealed possible presence of charge exchange (CX) X-ray emission in supernova remnants (SNRs). Although CX is expected to take place at outermost edges of SNR shells, no significant measurement has been reported so far due to the lack of nearby SNR samples. Here we present an X-ray study of SNR G296.1$-$0.5, which has a complicated multiple-shell structure, with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. We select two shells in different regions and find that in both regions O VII line shows a high forbidden-to-resonance ($f/r$) ratio that cannot be reproduced by a simple thermal model. Our spectral analysis suggests a presence of CX and the result is also supported by our new radio observation, where we discover evidence of molecular clouds associated with these shells. Assuming G296.1$-$0.5 has a spherical shock, we estimate that CX is dominant in a thin layer with a thickness of 0.2--0.3\% of the shock radius. The result is consistent with a previous theoretical expectation and we therefore conclude that CX occurs in G296.1$-$0.5., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We report optical integral-field spectroscopy in the field of one of the most luminous quasars in the $z < 1$ Universe, PKS0454-22, with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer. These data enable the discovery of three large ionized nebulae emitting in [O II], H$\beta$, and [O III] with projected areas of $1720, \ 1520,$ and $130 \ \mathrm{pkpc}^2$, which we refer to as N1, N2, and N3, respectively. N1 spatially and kinematically surrounds the quasar host and five nearby galaxies. The morphology and kinematics of N1 are most consistent with stripped interstellar medium resulting from ongoing interactions. Its ionization properties can be explained by quasar photoionization. N2 spatially and kinematically surrounds two galaxies which are at projected distances of $d \approx 90 \ \mathrm{pkpc}$ and line-of-sight velocities of $\Delta v \approx +1410\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$ from the quasar. The morphology and kinematics of N2 are also consistent with stripped interstellar medium. However, its ionization state requires additional ionization sources beyond the quasar, likely from fast shocks as it moves through the hot halo associated with a galaxy over-density around the quasar. N3 is not coincident with any galaxies with secure redshifts, and may arise from a cool gas structure in the intragroup medium or a dwarf galaxy. These large ionized nebulae demonstrate that interactions can produce cool gas structures on halo scales, while also possibly facilitating quasar fueling. We present two further classical novae, V906 Car and V5668 Sgr, which show jets and accretion disc spectral signatures in their H α complexes throughout the first 1000 d following their eruptions. From extensive densely time-sampled spectroscopy, we measure the appearance of the first high-velocity absorption component in V906 Car, and the duration of the commencement of the main H α emission. We constrain the time taken for V5668 Sgr to transition to the nebular phase using [N ii] 6584 Å. We find these timings to be consistent with the jet and accretion disc model for explaining optical spectral line profile changes in classical novae, and discuss the implications of this model for enrichment of the interstellar medium.

Synchrotron radiation from a decelerating blastwave is a widely accepted model of radio to X-ray afterglow emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). GeV gamma-ray emission detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and the duration of which extends beyond the prompt gamma-ray emission phase, is also compatible with broad features of afterglow emission. We revisit the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission model from a decelerating blastwave to fit multiwavelength data from three bright GRBs, namely GRB~190114C, GRB~130427A and GRB~090510. We constrain the afterglow model parameters using the simultaneous fit of the spectral energy distributions at different times and light curves at different frequencies for these bursts. We find that a constant density interstellar medium is favored for the short GRB~090510, while a wind-type environment is favored for the long GRB~130427A and GRB~190114C. The sub-TeV component in GRB~190114C detected by MAGIC is the SSC emission in our modelling. Furthermore we find that the SSC emission in the Thomson regime is adequate to fit the spectra and light curves of GRB~190114C. For the other two GRBs, lacking sub-TeV detection, the SSC emissions are also modeled in the Thomson regime. For the model parameters we have used, the $\gamma\gamma$ attenuation in the blastwave is negligible in the sub-TeV range compared to the redshift-dependent $\gamma\gamma$ attenuation in the extragalactic background light., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS, Comments welcome

Hydroxyl ($\rm OH$) is known to form efficiently in cold gas ($T\sim 100$K) along with the molecule $\rm H_2$ and can be used as an efficient tracer of the diffuse molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM). Using a simple formalism describing the $\rm H\,I/H_2$ transition and a reduced network of major chemical reactions, we present a semi-analytical prescription to estimate the abundances of O-bearing molecules in the diffuse ISM. We show that predictions based on our prescription are in good agreement with the estimates obtained using the MEUDON PDR code which utilizes the full reaction network. We investigate the dependence of the relative abundances of $\rm OH/H\,I$ and $\rm OH/H_2$ on the variations of physical conditions i.e., the metallicity, number density ($n$), cosmic ray ionization rate ($\zeta$) and strength of UV field ($\chi$) in the medium. We find that the $\rm OH/H\,I$ abundances observed in the Galactic ISM can be reproduced by models with $n\sim 50$cm$^{-3}$, $\chi\sim 1$ (Mathis field) and $\zeta\sim3\times10^{-17}$s$^{-1}$, with a variation of about one dex allowed around these values. Using the constrained $\rm H_2$ column density distribution function at $z\sim3$, we estimate the $\rm OH$ column density distribution function and discuss future prospects with the upcoming large radio absorption line surveys., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS

HESS J1825-137 is one of the most powerful and luminous TeV gamma-ray pulsar wind nebulae (PWN). To the south of HESS J1825-137, Fermi-LAT observation revealed a new region of GeV gamma-ray emission with three apparent peaks (termed here, GeV-ABC). This study presents interstellar medium (ISM) data and spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling towards the GeV emission to understand the underlying particle acceleration. We considered several particle accelerator scenarios - the PWN associated with HESS J1825-137, the progenitor SNR also associated with HESS J1825-137, plus the gamma-ray binary system LS\,5039. It was found that the progenitor SNR of HESS J1825-137 has insufficient energetics to account for all GeV emission. GeV-ABC may be a reflection of an earlier epoch in the history of the PWN associated with HESS\,1825-137, assuming fast diffusion perhaps including advection. LS\,5039 cannot meet the required energetics to be the source of particle acceleration. We combine observations from ALMA, ATCA, MUSE, andHerschel to study gas-to-dust ratios in 15 Fornax cluster galaxies detected in the FIR/sub-mm by Herschel and observed by ALMA as part of the ALMA Fornax Cluster Survey (AlFoCS). The sample spans a stellar mass range of 8.3 $\leq$ log (M$_*$ / M$_\odot$) $\leq$ 11.16, and a variety of morphological types. We use gas-phase metallicities derived from MUSE observations (from the Fornax3D survey) to study these ratios as a function of metallicity, and to study dust-to-metal ratios, in a sub-sample of nine galaxies. We find that gas-to-dust ratios in Fornax galaxies are systematically lower than those in field galaxies at fixed stellar mass/metallicity. This implies that a relatively large fraction of the metals in these Fornax systems is locked up in dust, which is possibly due to altered chemical evolution as a result of the dense environment. The low ratios are not only driven by HI deficiencies, but H$_2$-to-dust ratios are also significantly decreased. This is different in the Virgo cluster, where low gas-to-dust ratios inside the virial radius are driven by low HI-to-dust ratios, while H$_2$-to-dust ratios are increased. Resolved observations of NGC1436 show a radial increase in H$_2$-to-dust ratio, and show that low ratios are present throughout the disc. We propose various explanations for the low H$_2$-to-dust ratios in the Fornax cluster, including the more efficient stripping of H$_2$ compared to dust, more efficient enrichment of dust in the star formation process, and altered ISM physics in the cluster environment., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 21 pages, 12 figures, and 3 tables
