Identifying the heating mechanisms of the solar corona and the driving mechanisms of solar wind are key challenges in understanding solar physics. A full three-dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation was conducted to distinguish between the heating mechanisms in the fast solar wind above the open field region. Our simulation describes the evolution of the Alfvénic waves, which includes the compressible effects from the photosphere to the heliospheric distance s of 27 solar radii (R⊙). The hot corona and fast solar wind were reproduced simultaneously due to the dissipation of the Alfvén waves. The inclusion of the transition region and lower atmosphere enabled us to derive the solar mass-loss rate for the first time by performing a full three-dimensional compressible MHD simulation. The Alfvén turbulence was determined to be the dominant heating mechanism in the solar wind acceleration region (s > 1.3 R⊙), as suggested by previous solar wind models. In addition, shock formation and phase mixing are important below the lower transition region (s < 1.03 R⊙) as well.

Solar abundances have been historically assumed to be representative of cosmic abundances. However, our knowledge of the solar abundance of helium, the second most abundant element, relies mainly on models1 and indirect measurements through helioseismic observations2, because actual measurements of helium in the solar atmosphere are very scarce. Helium cannot be directly measured in the photosphere because of its high first ionization potential, and measurements of its abundance in the inner corona have been sporadic3,4. In this Letter, we present simultaneous global images of the helium (out to a heliocentric distance of 3R⊙ (solar radii)) and hydrogen emission in the solar corona during the minimum of solar activity of cycle 23 and directly derive the helium abundance in the streamer region and surrounding corona (out to 2.2R⊙). The morphology of the He+ corona is markedly different from that of the H corona, owing to significant spatial variations in helium abundance. The observations show that the helium abundance is shaped according to and modulated by the structure of the large-scale coronal magnetic field and that helium is almost completely depleted in the equatorial regions during the quiet Sun. This measurement provides a trace back to the coronal source of the anomalously slow solar wind observed in the heliosphere at the Sun–Earth Lagrangian point L1 in 2009, during the exceptionally long-lasting minimum of solar activity cycle 23. Global images of helium and hydrogen emission are used to directly derive the helium abundance out to 2.2R⊙. The helium abundance is shaped by the large-scale coronal magnetic field. Helium is almost completely depleted near the equator in the quiet Sun.

This study is devoted to the features of designing the flight trajectories to the Solar System center for two promising Russian spacecraft. The scientific goal of this project is studying the circumsolar space from close distances (60–80 solar radii) and extraecliptic inclinations. The planes of the spacecraft operational orbits should be inclined in opposite directions with respect to the Sun’s rotation axis. The description of the spacecraft trajectories and the main characteristics of their flight profiles are presented.

Results of experimental studies of the electron concentration and near-solar plasma velocity dependences on the heliocentric distance obtained in 1970–2012 by the method of radio transillumination by signals of spacecraft for the region of 3–50 solar radii are presented. A comparative analysis of different approximations of these dependences is given and it is shown that joint analysis of the data on the plasma velocity and concentration with allowance for independence of the plasma integral flux on the heliocentric distance makes it possible to find analytical expressions corresponding well to experimental data. Analytical approximations and graphs of dependences of the velocity, concentration, acceleration, force, and kinetic energy on the distance in the regions of solar wind acceleration for low and moderate solar activity are presented.

The discovery of the intact metallic planetary core fragment orbiting the white dwarf SDSS J1228+1040 within one Solar radius highlights the possibility of detecting larger, unfragmented conducting cores around magnetic white dwarfs through radio emission. Previous models of this decades-old idea focussed on determining survivability of the cores based on their inward Lorentz drift towards the star. However, gravitational tides may represent an equal or dominant force. Here, we couple both effects by assuming a Maxwell rheological model and performing simulations over the entire range of observable white dwarf magnetic field strengths (10^3 -- 10^9 G) and their potential atmospheric electrical conductivities (10^{-1} -- 10^4 S/m) in order to more accurately constrain survivability lifetimes. This force coupling allows us to better pinpoint the physical and orbital parameters which allow planetary cores to survive for over a Gyr, maximizing the possibility that they can be detected. Planetary transits are used to measure the solar radius since the beginning of the 18th century and are the most accurate direct method to measure potentially long-term variation in the solar size. Historical measures present a range of values dominated by systematic errors from different instruments and observers. Atmospheric seeing and black drop effect contribute as error sources for the precise timing of the planetary transit ground observations. Both Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) made observations of planetary transits from space to derive the solar radius. The International Astronomical Union approved the resolution B3 in 2015, defining a nominal solar radius of precisely 695,700 km. In this work, we show that this value is off by more than 300 km, which is one order of magnitude higher than the error of the most recent solar radius observations.

The event on January 27, 2012 is an example of the features of the dynamics of formation of a shock, excited by a fast coronal mass ejection (CME) at a velocity higher than 2000 km/s, are investigated. The following data were used: (a) images of the Sun in the UV channel of 13.1 nm from the AIA instrument at distances of 1.0–1.4 solar radii from the Sun’s center, (b) the images of the white corona from the LASCO C2 and C3 coronographs at R ≈ 2.1–30 solar radii. Results of experiments on polarized radio sounding of the outer solar corona using the Helios spacecraft from 1975 to 1984 are presented. The characteristic parameters of the temporal spectra of fluctuations in the Faraday rotation of the plane of polarization for heliocentric distances from 3.5 to 5.5 solar radii are obtained. The absolute level of these fluctuations and, consequently, the level of fluctuations of the magnetic field, is almost independent of the solar activity. It is well known that the global structure of the solar wind varies with the solar cycle such that there is slow solar wind at low latitudes and fast solar wind at high latitudes during solar minima. In contrast, a slow solar wind dominates at all latitudes during solar maxima. One explanation for the invariance of the fluctuations observed by sounding the circumsolar plasma is that the mean magnetohydrodynamic turbulence of the low-latitude, slow solar wind depends weakly on the phase of the solar cycle.

Early observations from the first orbit of Parker Solar Probe (PSP) show recurrent stream interaction regions that form close to the Sun. Energetic particle enhancements were observed on the 320th–326th day of the year 2018, which corresponds to ~1–7 days after the passage of the stream interface between faster and slower solar wind. Energetic particles stream into the inner heliosphere to the PSP spacecraft near 0.33 au (71 solar radii) where they are measured by the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS). The large 6-day time interval over which energetic particles are observed after the stream passage provides a unique perspective on the development of stream interactions within the heliosphere. The long duration of energetic particle enhancements suggests that particles stream in through the inner heliosphere more directly along magnetic field lines that form a sub-Parker spiral structure due to magnetic footpoint motion at the Sun and shearing of the magnetic field in the rarefaction region behind the stream interface. The strong build-up of energetic particle fluxes in the first 3 days after the passage of the stream interface indicates that suprathermal populations are enhanced near the interaction region through compression or other acceleration processes in addition to being diffusively accelerated. The early increases in energetic particle fluxes (in the first 3 days) in the formation of these events allows for the characterization of the acceleration associated with these suprathermal seed populations. Thus, we show that the time history of energetic particle fluxes observed by IS⊙IS provides a new view of particle acceleration at stream interaction regions throughout the inner heliosphere.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), the most important pieces of the puzzle that drives space weather, are continuously studied for their geomagnetic impact. We present here an update of a logistic regression method (Besliu-Ionescu et al., 2019) based on Srivastava (2005) model, that attempts to forecast if a CME will be associated with a geomagnetic storm defined by a minimum Dst value smaller than -30 nT. The model is run for a selection of CMEs listed in the LASCO catalogue during the solar cycle 24. It is trained on three fourths of these events and validated for the remaining one fourth. Based on five CME properties (the speed at 20 solar radii, the angular width, the acceleration, the measured position angle and the source position – bin-type variable) the model successfully predicted 0.98 of the events from the training set, and 0.98 of the events from the validation one.

Normal-mode coupling is a technique applied to probe the solar interior using surface observations of oscillations. The technique, which is straightforward to implement, makes more use of the seismic information in the wavefield than other comparable local imaging techniques and therefore has the potential to significantly improve current capabilities. Here, we examine supergranulation power spectra using mode-coupling analyses of intermediate-to-high-degree modes by invoking a Cartesian-geometric description of wave propagation under the assumption that the localized patches are much smaller in size than the solar radius. We extract the supergranular power spectrum and compare the results with prior helioseismic studies. Measurements of the dispersion relation and life times of supergranulation, obtained using near surface modes (f and p$_1$), are in accord with the literature. Although the solar wind flows primarily outward from the Sun to interplanetary space, there are times when small-scale plasma inflows are observed. Inward-propagating density fluctuations in polar coronal holes were detected by the COR2 coronagraph on board the STEREO-A spacecraft at heliocentric distances of 7 to 12 solar radii, and these fluctuations appear to undergo substantial deceleration as they move closer to the Sun. Models of linear magnetohydrodynamic waves have not been able to explain these deceleration patterns, so they have been interpreted more recently as jets from coronal sites of magnetic reconnection. In this paper, we develop a range of dynamical models of discrete plasma parcels with the goal of better understanding the observed deceleration trend. We found that parcels with a constant mass do not behave like the observed flows, and neither do parcels undergoing ablative mass loss. However, parcels that accrete mass in a snowplow-like fashion can become decelerated as observed. We also extrapolated OMNI in situ data down to the so-called Alfven surface and found that the initial launch-point for the observed parcels may often be above this critical radius. In other words, in order for the parcels to flow back down to the Sun, their initial speeds are probably somewhat nonlinear (i.e., supra-Alfvenic) and thus the parcels may be associated with structures such as shocks, jets, or shear instabilities., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 16 pages, 8 figures

Solar radio bursts are often early indicators of space weather events such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). In this study, we determined the properties of a sample of 40 high-starting-frequency (≥ 150 MHz) type II radio bursts and the characteristics of the associated CMEs such as width, location and speed during 2010–2016. The high starting frequency implies shock formation closer to the solar surface, which has important ramifications for the analysis of particle acceleration near the Sun. We found the CME heliocentric distances at the onset time of metric type II bursts range from 1.16 to 1.90 solar radii (Rs). The study was also extended to 128 metric type II bursts to include lower-starting-frequency events for further analysis. The projected CME heights range from 1.15 to 2.85 Rs. The lower starting frequency correspond to shocks forming at larger heights. A weak correlation was found between the type-II starting frequency and CME heights, which is consistent with the density decline in the inner corona. The analysis confirmed a good correlation between the drift rate and the starting frequency of type II bursts (correlation coefficient ∼ 0.8). Taking into account the radial variation of CMEs speeds from the inner corona to the interplanetary medium, we observed the deviations from the universal drift-rate spectrum of type II bursts and confirmed the previous results relating type II bursts to CMEs.

Properties of type III and type IIIb bursts in the frequency band of 8-80 MHz observed by the radio telescopes Ukrainian Radio Interferometer of NASU-2 (URAN-2) (Poltava) and Giant Ukrainian Radio Telescope (GURT) (Kharkiv) during the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) perihelion in April 2019 are discussed. Parker Solar Probe's first encounters with the Sun revealed the presence of ubiquitous localised magnetic deflections in the inner heliosphere; these structures, often called switchbacks, are particularly striking in solar wind streams originating from coronal holes. We report the direct evidence for magnetic reconnection occuring at the boundaries of three switchbacks crossed by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) at a distance of 45 to 48 solar radii of the Sun during its first encounter. We analyse the magnetic field and plasma parameters from the FIELDS and SWEAP instruments. The three structures analysed all show typical signatures of magnetic reconnection. The ion velocity and magnetic field are first correlated and then anti-correlated at the inbound and outbound edges of the bifurcated current sheets with a central ion flow jet. Most of the reconnection events have a strong guide field and moderate magnetic shear but one current sheet shows indications of quasi anti-parallel reconnection in conjunction with a magnetic field magnitude decrease by $90\%$. Given the wealth of intense current sheets observed by PSP, reconnection at switchbacks boundaries appears to be rare. However, as the switchback boundaries accomodate currents one can conjecture that the geometry of these boundaries offers favourable conditions for magnetic reconnection to occur. Such a mechanism would thus contribute in reconfiguring the magnetic field of the switchbacks, affecting the dynamics of the solar wind and eventually contributing to the blending of the structures with the regular wind as they propagate away from the Sun., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A, PSP special issue (v2: typos correction)

Total solar eclipses (TSEs) provide a unique opportunity to quantify the properties of the K-corona (electrons), F-corona (dust) and E-corona (ions) continuously from the solar surface out to a few solar radii. We apply a novel inversion method to separate emission from the K- and F-corona continua using unpolarized total brightness (tB) observations from five 0.5 nm bandpasses acquired during the 2019 July 2 TSE between 529.5 nm and 788.4 nm. The wavelength dependence relative to the photosphere (i.e., color) of the F-corona itself is used to infer the tB of the K- and F-corona for each line-of-sight. We compare our K-corona emission results with the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory (MLSO) K-Cor polarized brightness (pB) observations from the day of the eclipse, and the forward modeled K-corona intensity from the Predictive Science Inc. (PSI) Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model prediction. Our results are generally consistent with previous work and match both the MLSO data and PSI-MHD predictions quite well, supporting the validity of our approach and of the PSI-MHD model. However, we find that the tB of the F-corona is higher than expected in the low corona, perhaps indicating that the F-corona is slightly polarized -- challenging the common assumption that the F-corona is entirely unpolarized., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We perform a zero-$\beta$ magnetohydrodynamic simulation for the C7.7 class flare initiated at 01:18 UT on 2011 June 21 using the Message Passing Interface Adaptive Mesh Refinement Versatile Advection Code (MPI-AMRVAC). The initial condition for the simulation involves a flux rope which we realize through the regularized Biot-Savart laws, whose parameters are constrained by observations from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUVI) on the twin Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO). This data-constrained initial state is then relaxed to a force-free state by the magneto-frictional module in MPI-AMRVAC. The further time-evolving simulation results reproduce the eruption characteristics obtained by SDO/AIA 94 A, 304 A, and STEREO/EUVI 304 A observations fairly well. The simulated flux rope possesses similar eruption direction, height range, and velocities to the observations. Especially, the two phases of slow evolution and fast eruption are reproduced by varying the density distribution in light of the filament material draining process. Our data-constrained simulations also show other advantages, such as a large field of view (about 0.76 solar radii). We study the twist of the magnetic flux rope and the decay index of the overlying field, and find that in this event, both the magnetic strapping force and the magnetic tension force are sufficiently weaker than the magnetic hoop force, thus allowing the successful eruption of the flux rope. The value of the eclipse solar radius during the 2017 August 21 total solar eclipse was estimated to be $S_{\odot} = (959.95\pm 0.05)"$ at $1\,au$ with no significant dependence on wavelength. The measurement was obtained from the analysis of a video of the eclipse flash spectrum recorded at the southern limit of the umbral shadow path. Our analysis was conducted by extracting light curves from the flash spectrum and comparing them to simulated light curves. Simulations were performed by integrating the limb darkening function (LDF) over the exposed area of photosphere. Understanding convection is important in stellar physics, for example as an input in stellar evolution models. Helioseismic estimates of convective flow amplitudes in deeper regions of the solar interior disagree by orders of magnitude among themselves and with simulations. We aim to assess the validity of an existing upper limit of solar convective flow amplitudes at a depth of 0.96 solar radii obtained using time-distance helioseismology and several simplifying assumptions. We generated synthetic observations for convective flow fields from a magnetohydrodynamic simulation (MURaM) using travel-time sensitivity functions and a noise model. Two states of the slow solar wind are identified from in-situ measurements by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) inside 50 solar radii from the Sun. At such distances the wind measured at PSP has not yet undergone significant transformation related to the expansion and propagation of the wind. We focus in this study on the properties of the quiet solar wind with no magnetic switchbacks. The two states differ by their plasma beta, flux and magnetic pressure. PSP's magnetic connectivity established with Potential Field Source Surface (PFSS) reconstructions, tested against extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and white-light imaging, reveals the two states correspond to a transition from a streamer to an equatorial coronal hole. The expansion factors of magnetic field lines in the streamer are 20 times greater than those rooted near the center of the coronal hole. The very different expansion rates of the magnetic field result in different magnetic pressures measured by PSP in the two plasma states. Solar wind simulations run along these differing flux tubes reproduce the slower and denser wind measured in the streamer and the more tenuous wind measured in the coronal hole. Plasma heating is more intense at the base of the streamer field lines rooted near the boundary of the equatorial hole than those rooted closer to the center of the hole. This Letter addresses the first Solar Orbiter (SO) -- Parker Solar Probe (PSP) quadrature, occurring on January 18, 2021, to investigate the evolution of solar wind from the extended corona to the inner heliosphere. Assuming ballistic propagation, the same plasma volume observed remotely in corona at altitudes between 3.5 and 6.3 solar radii above the solar limb with the Metis coronagraph on SO can be tracked to PSP, orbiting at 0.1 au, thus allowing the local properties of the solar wind to be linked to the coronal source region from where it originated. Thanks to the close approach of PSP to the Sun and the simultaneous Metis observation of the solar corona, the flow-aligned magnetic field and the bulk kinetic energy flux density can be empirically inferred along the coronal current sheet with an unprecedented accuracy, allowing in particular estimation of the Alfv\'en radius at 8.7 solar radii during the time of this event. This is thus the very first study of the same solar wind plasma as it expands from the sub-Alfv\'enic solar corona to just above the Alfv\'en surface., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We obtained an axi-symmetric model for the large-scale distribution of stars and dust in the Milky Way (MW) using a radiative transfer code that can account for the existing near-infrared (NIR)/mid-infrared/submm all-sky emission maps of our Galaxy. We find that the MW has a star-formation rate of ${ SFR}=1.25\pm0.2\,{ M}_{\odot}$/yr, a stellar mass $M_{*}=(4.9\pm 0.3)\times10^{10}\,{ M}_{\odot}$, and a specific SFR that is relatively constant with radius (except for the inner 1 kpc). We identified an inner radius $R_{ in}= 4.5$\,kpc beyond which the stellar emissivity and dust distribution fall exponentially. At subterahertz frequencies -- i.e., millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths -- there is a gap of measurements of the solar radius as well as other parameters of the solar atmosphere. As the observational wavelength changes, the radius varies because the altitude of the dominant electromagnetic radiation is produced at different heights in the solar atmosphere. Moreover, radius variations throughout long time series are indicative of changes in the solar atmosphere that may be related to the solar cycle. Therefore, the solar radius is an important parameter for the calibration of solar atmospheric models enabling a better understanding of the atmospheric structure. In this work we use data from the Solar Submillimeter-wave Telescope (SST) and from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), at the frequencies of 100, 212, 230, and 405 GHz, to measure the equatorial and polar radii of the Sun. The radii measured with extensive data from the SST agree with the radius-vs-frequency trend present in the literature. The radii derived from ALMA maps at 230 GHz also agree with the radius-vs-frequency trend, whereas the 100-GHz radii are slightly above the values reported by other authors. In addition, we analyze the equatorial and polar radius behavior over the years, by determining the correlation coefficient between solar activity and subterahertz radii time series at 212 and 405 GHz (SST). The variation of the SST-derived radii over 13 years are correlated to the solar activity when considering equatorial regions of the solar atmosphere, and anticorrelated when considering polar regions. Stars with higher aluminum and nitrogen enrichment are often the key pieces for the chemical makeup of multiple populations in almost all globular clusters (GCs). There is also compelling observational evidence that some Galactic components could be partially built from dissipated GCs. Thus, the identification of such kinds of stars among metal-poor field stars may provide insights on the composite nature of the Milky Way (MW) bulge and inner stellar halo, as well as reveal other chemical peculiarities. Here, based on APOGEE spectra, we report the discovery of 29 mildly metal-poor ([Fe/H]$\lesssim-0.7$) stars with stellar atmospheres strongly enriched in aluminum (Al-rich stars: [Al/Fe]$\gtrsim+0.5$), well above the typical Galactic levels, located within the Solar radius toward the bulge region, which lies in highly eccentric orbits ($e\gtrsim0.6$). We find many similarities for almost all of the chemical species measured in this work with the chemical patterns of GCs, so we conjecture that they have likely been dynamically ejected into the bulge and inner halo from GCs formed in situ and/or GC formed in different progenitors of known merger events experienced by the MW, such as the \textit{Gaia}-Sausage-Enceladus and/or Sequoia., Accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters. 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

The Solar Orbiter spacecraft will be equipped with a wide range of remote-sensing (RS) and in situ (IS) instruments to record novel and unprecedented measurements of the solar atmosphere and the inner heliosphere. To take full advantage of these new datasets, tools and techniques must be developed to ease multi-instrument and multi-spacecraft studies. In particular the currently inaccessible low solar corona below two solar radii can only be observed remotely. Furthermore techniques must be used to retrieve coronal plasma properties in time and in three dimensional (3D) space. Solar Orbiter will run complex observation campaigns that provide interesting opportunities to maximise the likelihood of linking IS data to their source region near the Sun. Several RS instruments can be directed to specific targets situated on the solar disk just days before data acquisition. To compare IS and RS, data we must improve our understanding of how heliospheric probes magnetically connect to the solar disk. Aims. The aim of the present paper is to briefly review how the current modelling of the Sun and its atmosphere can support Solar Orbiter science. We describe the results of a community-led effort by European Space Agency's Modelling and Data Analysis Working Group (MADAWG) to develop different models, tools, and techniques deemed necessary to test different theories for the physical processes that may occur in the solar plasma. The focus here is on the large scales and little is described with regards to kinetic processes. To exploit future IS and RS data fully, many techniques have been adapted to model the evolving 3D solar magneto-plasma from the solar interior to the solar wind. A particular focus in the paper is placed on techniques that can estimate how Solar Orbiter will connect magnetically through the complex coronal magnetic fields to various photospheric and coronal features in support of spacecraft operations and future scientific studies. Methods. Recent missions such as STEREO, provided great opportunities for RS, IS, and multi-spacecraft studies. We summarise the achievements and highlight the challenges faced during these investigations, many of which motivated the Solar Orbiter mission. We present the new tools and techniques developed by the MADAWG to support the science operations and the analysis of the data from the many instruments on Solar Orbiter. Results. This article reviews current modelling and tool developments that ease the comparison of model results with RS and IS data made available by current and upcoming missions. It also describes the modelling strategy to support the science operations and subsequent exploitation of Solar Orbiter data in order to maximise the scientific output of the mission. Conclusions. The on-going community effort presented in this paper has provided new models and tools necessary to support mission operations as well as the science exploitation of the Solar Orbiter data. The tools and techniques will no doubt evolve significantly as we refine our procedure and methodology during the first year of operations of this highly promising mission. © 2020 A. P. Trans-coronal radio observations were taken during the 2011 observing campaign of the Akatsuki spacecraft through superior conjunction. The observed X-band (8.4 GHz) signals exhibit frequency fluctuations (FF) that are produced by temporal variations in electron density along the radio ray path. A two-component model for interpretation of the FF is proposed: FF scales largely with acoustic wave amplitude through the inner coronal regions where the sound speed dwarfs the solar wind outflow speed, while FF in the region of solar wind acceleration is dominated by the increased density oscillation frequency on the sensing path that results from bulk advection of the plasma inhomogeneities. An estimate of fractional electron density fluctuation is obtained from the mid-corona. A radial profile of slow solar wind speed is determined in the extended corona using mass-flux continuity principles. The coronal sonic point for slow solar wind is estimated to range from 4 to 5 solar radii from the heliocenter.

A proper characterization of the kinematics of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is important not only for practical purposes, i.e. space weather forecasting, but also to improve our current understanding of the physics behind their evolution in the middle corona and into the heliosphere. The first and core step toward this goal is the estimation of the three main components of the CME speeds, namely the expansion speed relative to the center of motion in both, the radial and lateral directions, and the propagation speed (i.e. $V_{\mathrm{front}}$ , $V_{\mathrm{lat}}$ , $V_{\mathrm{bulk}}$ , respectively). To this aim, we exploit the observations obtained with COR2 onboard the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) from 2007 to 2014 to investigate the relationships among the different components as a function of the heliocentric distance of the CME events. Here, we analyze a sample of 475 CMEs. The selected events exhibit clear flux rope signatures as seen either edge on (i.e. F-CMEs: three-part structure, presence of a cavity) or face on (i.e. L- or loop CMEs) in white light images. Our main findings are: i) L-CMEs show almost twice as large expansion speeds compared to F-CMEs ( $V_{\mathrm {front},\mathrm{L}}=367~\mbox{km}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}$ , $V_{\mathrm{lat},\mathrm{L}}=365~\mbox{km}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}$ vs. $V_{\mathrm{front},\mathrm{F}}=215~\mbox{km}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}$ , $V_{\mathrm{lat},\mathrm{F}}= 182~\mbox{km}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}$ ); ii) the relationship between the two components of the expansion speeds is linear and does not change with height; iii) the ratio of the propagation speed to the lateral expansion speed is a function of the angular width that describes the self-similarity evolution of a CME; and iv) 65% of the CMEs exhibit a self-similar evolution at 10 solar radii, reaching 70% at 15 solar radii.

We present new collisional-radiative models (CRMs) for helium in the quiescent solar corona, and predict the emissivities of the He and He$^+$ lines to be observed by DKIST, Solar Orbiter, and Proba-3. We discuss in detail the rates we selected for these models, highlighting several shortcomings we have found in previous work. As no previous complete and self-consistent coronal CRM for helium existed, we have benchmarked our largest model at a density of 10$^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$ and temperature of 20,000 K against recent CRMs developed for photoionised nebulae. We then present results for the outer solar corona, using new dielectronic recombination rates we have calculated, which increase the abundance of neutral helium by about a factor of two. We also find that all the optical triplet He I lines, and in particular the well known He I 10830 and 5876 A lines are strongly affected by both photo-excitation and photo-ionisation from the disk radiation, and that extensive CRM models are required to obtain correct estimates. Close to the Sun, at an electron density of 10$^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$ and temperature of 1 MK, we predict the emissivity of the He I 10830 A to be comparable to that of the strong Fe XIII coronal line at 10798 A. However, we expect the He I emissivity to sharply fall in the outer corona, with respect to Fe XIII. We confirm that the He$^+$ Lyman $\alpha$ at 304 A is also significantly affected by photo-excitation and is expected to be detectable as a strong coronal line up to several solar radii., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Recent analysis of high-cadence white-light images taken by the Solar-Terrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) near solar maximum has revealed that outflowing density structures are released in an ubiquitous manner in the solar wind. The present study investigates whether these density fluctuations could originate from the transient heating of the low corona observed during Coronal Bright Points (CBPs). We assume that part of the intense heating measured during CBPs occurs at the coronal base of open magnetic fields that channel the forming solar wind. We employ the solar wind model MULTI-VP to quantify the plasma compression induced by transient heating and investigate how the induced perturbation propagates to the upper corona. We show that for heating rates with statistics comparable to those observed during CBPs the compressive wave initially increases the local plasma density by a factor of up to 50$\%$ at 5 R$_\odot$. The wave expands rapidly beyond 30 solar radii and the local enhancement in density decreases beyond. Based on the occurrence rates of CBPs measured in previous studies, we impose transient heating events at the base of thousands of open magnetic field lines to study the response of the entire 3-D corona. The simulated density cubes are then converted into synthetic white-light imagery. We show that the resulting brightness variations occupy all position angles in the images on timescales of hours. We conclude that a significant part of the ubiquitous brightness variability of the solar corona could originate in the strong transient heating of flux tubes induced by CBPs., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

During its first solar encounter, the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) acquired unprecedented up-close imaging of a small Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) propagating in the forming slow solar wind. The CME originated as a cavity imaged in extreme ultraviolet that moved very slowly ($, 19 pages, 10 figures, to appear in ApJS, 2 animations of Figure 2 available at https://nuage.irap.omp.eu/index.php/s/8ynNotNVWU6PrtN and https://nuage.irap.omp.eu/index.php/s/dflQ94DKuMbiaTv

Total solar eclipse (TSE) coronal large and small scale events were reported in the historical literature but a definite synoptic coverage was missing for studying a relationship with the more general magnetic context of the solar-disk. We here analyze temporal changes in the solar corona before, during, and after the total solar eclipse on 21 August 2017 from a set of ground-based and of space-borne observations. High-quality ground-based white-light (W-L) observations and a deep image processing allow us to reveal these changes for the first time with a fraction of a one-minute time resolution. Displacements of a number of fine coronal features were measured for the first time at these small radial distances, using a diffraction limited instrument at a single site. The comparison with space-based observations, including observations from the {\it Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory} (STEREO) mission, showed that the features belong to a slow coronal mass ejection (CME) propagating through the corona with the nearly constant speed of 250 km/s. Our TSE images provide the same typical velocity as measured at a distance of one solar radius from the surface. The event was initiated by coronal dynamics manifested by a prominence eruption that started just before the eclipse observations and an ascent of a U-shaped structure visible in the AIA 171 A channel, which we assume as the lower part of a coronal cavity. The prominence material was observed draining down towards the chromosphere along the prominence arch. While the prominence disappears in the STEREO-A field-of-view at the height of about 6$^{\prime}$ above the limb, the corresponding flux rope seems to continue towards the outer corona and produces the slow CME with turbulent motion. Measuring the global magnetic field of the solar corona remains exceptionally challenging. The fine-scale density structures observed in white light images taken during Total Solar Eclipses (TSEs) are currently the best proxy for inferring the magnetic field direction in the corona from the solar limb out to several solar radii (Rs). We present, for the first time, the topology of the coronal magnetic field continuously between 1 and 6 Rs, as quantitatively inferred with the Rolling Hough Transform (RHT) for 14 unique eclipse coronae that span almost two complete solar cycles. We find that the direction of the coronal magnetic field does not become radial until at least 3 Rs, with a high variance between 1.5 and 3 Rs at different latitudes and phases of the solar cycle. We find that the most non-radial coronal field topologies occur above regions with weaker magnetic field strengths in the photosphere, while stronger photospheric fields are associated with highly radial field lines in the corona. In addition, we find an abundance of field lines which extend continuously from the solar surface out to several solar radii at all latitudes, regardless of the presence of coronal holes. International audience; Observations by the Parker Solar Probe mission of the solar wind at similar to 35.7 solar radii reveal the existence of whistler wave packets with frequencies below 0.1 f(ce) (20-80 Hz in the spacecraft frame). These waves often coincide with local minima of the magnetic field magnitude or with sudden deflections of the magnetic field that are called switchbacks. Their sunward propagation leads to a significant Doppler frequency downshift from 200-300 to 20-80 Hz (from 0.2 to 0.5 f(ce)). The polarization of these waves varies from quasi-parallel to significantly oblique with wave normal angles that are close to the resonance cone. Their peak amplitude can be as large as 2-4 nT. Such values represent approximately 10% of the background magnetic field, which is considerably more than what is observed at 1 au. Recent numerical studies show that such waves may potentially play a key role in breaking the heat flux and scattering the Strahl population of suprathermal electrons into a halo population.

The mean Galactocentric radial velocities $\langle v_{R}\rangle(R,\varphi)$ of luminous red giant stars within the mid-plane of the Milky Way reveal a spiral signature, which could plausibly reflect the response to a non-axisymmetric perturbation of the gravitational potential in the Galactic disk. We apply a simple steady-state toy model of a logarithmic spiral to interpret these observations, and find a good qualitative and quantitative match. Presuming that the amplitude of the gravitational potential perturbation is proportionate to that in the disk's surface mass density, we estimate the surface mass density amplitude to be $\Sigma_{\rm max} (R_{\odot})\approx 5.5\,\rm M_{\odot}\,pc^{-2}$ at the solar radius when choosing a fixed pattern speed of $\Omega_{\mathrm p}=12\,\rm km\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-1}$. Combined with the local disk density, this implies a surface mass density contrast between the arm and inter-arm regions of approximately $\pm 10\%$ at the solar radius, with an increases towards larger radii. Aims. The study of the morphology of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is an auspicious approach to understanding how magnetic fields are structured within CMEs. Although earlier studies have suggested an asymmetry in the width of CMEs in orthogonal directions, this has not been inspected using multi-viewpoint observations. Methods. We inspect the early evolution (below ten solar radii) of the morphology of a dozen CMEs occurring under specific conditions of observing spacecraft location and CME trajectory, favorable to reduce uncertainties typically involved in the 3D reconstruction used here. These events are carefully reconstructed by means of a forward modeling tool using simultaneous observations of STEREO EUVI and SDO/AIA as input when originating low in the corona, and followed up in the outer fields of view of the STEREO and the SOHO coronagraphs. We then examine the height evolution of the morphological parameters arising from the reconstructions. Results. The multi-viewpoint analysis of this set of CMEs revealed that their initial expansion --below three solar radii-- is considerably asymmetric and non-self-similar. Both angular widths, namely along the main axes of CMEs ($AW_L$) and in the orthogonal direction ($AW_D$, representative of the flux rope diameter), exhibit much steeper change rates below this height, with the growth rate of $AW_L$ found to be larger than that of $AW_D$, also below that height. Angular widths along the main axes of CMEs are on average $\approx$1.8 times larger than widths in the orthogonal direction $AW_D$. The ratios of the two expansion speeds, namely in the directions of CMEs main axes and in their orthogonal, are nearly constant in time after $\sim$4 solar radii, with an average ratio $\approx$1.6. We investigate small-scale light variations in V646 Pup occurring on different timescales with the aim to investigate whether this variability is similar to that observed in FU Ori. We observed V646 Pup at the SAAO and CTIO between 2013 and 2018 with Johnson and Sloan filters, typically using a one-day cadence maintained for 1-4 weeks. We also utilised the public-domain 1512-day-long ASAS-SN light curve and TESS photometry obtained in 2019 over 24.1 days with a 30 min cadence. New SAAO low-resolution spectra assist in updating major disc parameters, while the archival high-resolution Keck spectra are used to search for temporal changes in the disc rotational profiles. The ground-based observations confirm the constantly decreasing brightness of V646 Pup at the rate of 0.018 mag/yr. Precise TESS data show that the slight, 0.005-0.01 mag, light variations imposed on this general trend do consist of a few independent wave trains of an apparently time-coherent nature. Assuming that this is typical situation, based on an analysis of colour-magnitude diagrams obtained for earlier epochs, we were able to make a preliminarily inference that the bulk of the light changes observed could be due to the rotation of disc photosphere inhomogeneities, arising between 10-12 solar radii from the star. We do not exclude the possibility that these inhomogeneities could also manifest themselves in the rotational profiles of the disc, as obtained from the high-resolution spectra. Assuming Keplerian rotation of these inhomogeneities, we give a preliminary determination of the stellar mass at 0.7-0.9 solar mass. These preliminary results are similar to those better established for FU Ori, which suggests a common driving mechanism(s)., Comment: Accepted by A&A

Magnetic reconnection in current sheets converts magnetic energy into particle energy. The process may play an important role in the acceleration and heating of the solar wind close to the Sun. Observations from Parker Solar Probe provide a new opportunity to study this problem, as it measures the solar wind at unprecedented close distances to the Sun. During the 1st orbit, PSP encountered a large number of current sheets in the solar wind through perihelion at 35.7 solar radii. We performed a comprehensive survey of these current sheets and found evidence for 21 reconnection exhausts. These exhausts were observed in heliospheric current sheets, coronal mass ejections, and regular solar wind. However, we find that the majority of current sheets encountered around perihelion, where the magnetic field was strongest and plasma beta was lowest, were Alfv\'enic structures associated with bursty radial jets and these current sheets did not appear to be undergoing local reconnection. We examined conditions around current sheets to address why some current sheets reconnected, while others did not. A key difference appears to be the degree of plasma velocity shear across the current sheets: The median velocity shear for the 21 reconnection exhausts was 24% of the Alfv\'en velocity shear, whereas the median shear across 43 Alfv\'enic current sheets examined was 71% of the Alfv\'en velocity shear. This finding could suggest that large, albeit sub-Alfv\'enic, velocity shears suppress reconnection. Measurement results are presented for the velocity of density irregularities in solar wind plasma, which modulate the frequency of coherent radio signals from the Galileo spacecraft in the S-band. The measurements have been performed by the spaced receiving technique at ground monitoring stations. The data cover a range of heliocentric distances from 7 to 72 solar radii at low heliolatitudes near solar minimum. It is shown that acceleration of slow solar wind continues up to distances of about 30 solar radii. In the overlapping ranges of distances from the Sun, the results are qualitatively consistent with LASCO SOHO data for the same periods, with the previous results obtained by analyzing the amplitude fluctuations of signals from the Venera 15 and 16 spacecraft, and with the more recent measurements acquired using the Mars Express spacecraft.

Based on the work of Menon & Heger (2017), we present the bolometric light curvesand spectra of the explosions of blue supergiant progenitors from binary mergers. We study SN 1987A and two other peculiar Type IIP supernovae: SN 1998A and SN 2006V. The progenitor models were produced using the stellar evolution code Keplerand then exploded using the 1D radiation hydrodynamic code Crab. The explosions of binary merger models exhibit an overall better fit to the light curve of SN 1987A than previous single star models, because of their lower helium-core masses, larger envelope masses, and smaller radii. The merger model that best matches the observational constraints of the progenitor of SN 1987A and the light curve is a model with a radius of 37 solar radii, an ejecta mass of 20.6 solar masses, an explosion energy of 1.7 Bethe, a nickel mass of 0.073 solar masses, and a nickel mixing velocity of 3,000 km/s. This model also works for SN 1998A and is comparable with earlier estimates from semi-analytic models. In the case of SN 2006V, however, a model with a radius of 150 solar radii and ejecta mass of 19.1 solar masses matches the light curve. These parameters are significantly higher than predictions from semi-analytic models for the progenitor of this supernova., 17 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, accepted by MNRAS

We apply a simple axisymmetric disc model to 218 Galactic Cepheids whose accurate measurements of the distance and velocities are obtained by cross-matching an existing Cepheids catalogue with the Gaia DR2 data. Our model fit determines the "local centrifugal speed", $V_\mathrm{c}$ $-$ defined as the rotation speed required to balance the local radial gravitational force $-$ at the Sun's location to be $V_{c}(R_0)=236\pm 3$ km s$^{-1}$ and the Sun's azimuthal and radial peculiar motions to be $V_{\odot}=12.4\pm0.7$ km s$^{-1}$ and $U_{\odot}=7.7\pm0.9$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. These results are obtained with strong priors on the solar radius, $R_0=8.2\pm0.1$ kpc, and Sun's angular rotation velocity, $\Omega_{\odot}=30.24\pm0.12$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$. We also applied the axisymmetric model to mock data from an N-body/hydrodynamic simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy with a bar and spiral arms. We find that our axisymmetric model fit to the young stars recovers the local centrifugal speed reasonably well, even in the face of significant non-axisymmetry. However, the local centrifugal speed determined from our Cepheid sample could suffer from systematic uncertainty as large as 6 km s$^{-1}$., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The ground based observations of the coronal emission lines using a coronagraph are affected by the short duration of clear sky and varying sky transparency. These conditions do not permit to study small amplitude variations in the coronal emission reliably necessary to investigate the process or processes involved in heating the coronal plasma and dynamics of solar corona. The proposed Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) over comes these limitations and will provide continuous observation 24 h a day needed for detailed studies of solar corona and drivers for space weather predictions. VELC payload onboard India’s Aditya-L1 space mission is an internally occulted solar coronagraph for studying the temperature, velocity, density and heating of solar corona. To achieve the proposed science goals, an instrument which is capable of carrying out simultaneous imaging, spectroscopy and spectro-polarimetric observations of the solar corona close to the solar limb is required. VELC is designed with salient features of (a) Imaging solar corona at 500 nm with an angular resolution of 5 arcsec over a FOV of 1.05Ro to 3Ro (Ro:Solar radius) (b) Simultaneous multi-slit spectroscopy at 530.3 nm [Fe XIV],789.2 nm [Fe XI] and 1074.7 nm [Fe XIII] with spectral dispersion of 28mA, 31mA and 202mA per pixel respectively, over a FOV of 1.05Ro to 1.5Ro. (c) Multi-slit dual beam spectro-polarimetry at 1074.7 nm. All the components of instrument have been optimized in view of the scientific objectives and requirements of space payloads. In this paper we present the details of optical configuration and the expected performance of the payload.

The most intense solar energetic particle events are produced by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) accompanied by intense type II radio bursts below 15 MHz. Understanding where these type II bursts are generated relative to an erupting CME would reveal important details of particle acceleration near the Sun, but the emission cannot be imaged on Earth due to distortion from its ionosphere. Here, a technique is introduced to identify the likely source location of the emission by comparing the observed dynamic spectrum observed from a single spacecraft against synthetic spectra made from hypothesized emitting regions within a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical simulation of the recreated CME. The radio-loud 2005 May 13 CME was chosen as a test case, with Wind/WAVES radio data used to frame the inverse problem of finding the most likely progression of burst locations. An MHD recreation is used to create synthetic spectra for various hypothesized burst locations. A framework is developed to score these synthetic spectra by their similarity to the type II frequency profile derived from Wind/WAVES data. Simulated areas with 4x enhanced entropy and elevated de Hoffmann Teller velocities are found to produce synthetic spectra similar to spacecraft observations. A geometrical analysis suggests that the eastern edge of the entropy derived shock around (-30, 0) degrees in heliocentric coordinates was emitting in the first hour of the event before ceasing emission, and that the western/southwestern edge of the shock centered around (6, -12) degrees was a dominant area of radio emission for the 2 hours of simulation data out to 20 solar radii., Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures, accepted to the Astrophysical Journal

For more than 12 hr beginning on 2021 January 18, continuous narrowband electrostatic emissions were observed on the Parker Solar Probe near 20 solar radii. The observed −1, these electrostatic emissions are interpreted as ion-acoustic waves. Their observation demonstrates a new regime of instability and evolution of oblique ion-acoustic waves that have not been reported previously in theory or experiment.

We construct a dynamical model of the Milky Way disk from a data set, which combines Gaia EDR3 and APOGEE data throughout Galactocentric radii between $5.0\leq R\leq19.5$ kpc. We make use of the spherically-aligned Jeans Anisotropic Method to model the stellar velocities and their velocity dispersions. Building upon our previous work, our model now is fitted to kinematic maps that have been extended to larger Galactocentric radii due to the expansion of our data set, probing the outer regions of the Galactic disk. Our best-fitting dynamical model suggests a logarithmic density slope of $\alpha_{\rm DM}=-1.602\pm0.079_{\rm syst}$ for the dark matter halo and a dark matter density of $\rho_{\rm DM}(R_{\odot})=(8.92\pm0.56_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-3}$ ($0.339\pm0.022_{\rm syst}$ GeV cm$^{3}$). We estimate a circular velocity at the solar radius of $v_{\rm circ}=(234.7\pm1.7_{\rm syst})$ km s$^{-1}$ with a decline towards larger radii. The total mass density is $\rho_{\rm tot}(R_{\odot})$=$(0.0672\pm0.0015_{\rm syst})$ M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-3}$ with a slope of $\alpha_{\rm tot}$=$-2.367\pm0.047_{\rm syst}$ for $5\leq R\leq19.5$ kpc and the total surface density is $\Sigma(R{_\odot}, |z|\leq$ 1.1 kpc)=$(55.5\pm1.7_{\rm syst})$ M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$. While the statistical errors are small, the error budget of the derived quantities is dominated by the 3 to 7 times larger systematic uncertainties. These values are consistent with our previous determination, but systematic uncertainties are reduced due to the extended data set covering a larger spatial extent of the Milky Way disk. Furthermore, we test the influence of non-axisymmetric features on our resulting model and analyze how a flaring disk model would change our findings., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The solar event SOL2012–10–23T03:13, which was associated with a X1.8 flare without an accompanying coronal mass ejection (CME) and with a Type II radio burst, is analyzed. A method for constructing the spatial and temporal profiles of the difference brightness detected in the AIA/SDOUVand EUV channels is used together with the analysis of the Type II radio burst. The formation and propagation of a region of compression preceded by a collisional shock detected at distances R < 1.3R ⊙ from the center of the Sun is observed in this event (R ⊙ is the solar radius). Comparison with a similar event studied earlier, SOL2011–02–28T07:34 [1], suggests that the region of compression and shock could be due to a transient (impulsive) action exerted on the surrounding plasma by an eruptive, high-temperature magnetic rope. The initial instability and eruption of this rope could be initiated by emerging magnetic flux, and its heating from magnetic reconnection. The cessation of the eruption of the rope could result from its interaction with surrounding magnetic structures (coronal loops).

We report on the results of studying the circumsolar plasma turbulence according to the coronal sounding experiments using spacecraft signals. Statistical characteristics of the temporal fluctuation spectra of the amplitude, phase, frequency, and Faraday rotation angle of the radio-wave polarization plane are described for the solar offset distances of the ray path in the range between 3 and 40 solar radii. Information on the turbulence spectra is given and the spectral index, as well as the outer and inner turbulence scales, as functions of the heliocentric distance are presented. The effect on the measured parameters of the plasma waves is discussed and typical values of the wave periods for different distances from the Sun are given.

In the present study we have investigated 426 DH Type II radio burst and associated CMEs events observed during the time period of 1997–2014. The starting frequency of most of associated DH type-II bursts (85%) lies in the range of 1–14 MHz (364 out of 426) with mean value of starting frequency is ∼11 MHz. The study of starting frequency (1–16 MHz) of DH type II bursts and heliocentric distance in solar radii indicate that DH type II radio bursts originate from 2.2–4.5 (RS) heliocentric distance in solar radii. We also found that the ∼ 48% DH Type II radio bursts associated CMEs are located between ± 40° of solar central disc and we also found that duration of DH type II radio bursts located at solar disc center are more than the duration of DH type II radio bursts located at solar limb. It is found that mean value for linear and initial speed of DH Type II associated CMEs are 1157 km/s and 1200 km/s, respectively. The CMEs speed are not correlated with duration of DH Type II radio bursts indicate that the durations of DH Type II radio bursts does not depend on speed of CMEs. The study also show that 426 DH type II radio bursts associated CMEs/flares occurred when there is coronal holes(CH) in nearby area and the mean distance between DH type II burst associated CMEs/ flares and boundary of coronal hole (CH) is 26°. The study also shows that there is no relation between drift velocity of DH type II radio bursts and speed of CMEs. The study also indicate that about 45% flares those associated DH Type II radio bursts have duration about 60 minutes and long duration DH Type II radio bursts are associated with X-class flares. We have also discussed that the results obtained in the present investigation in view of latest heliophysics interpretations.

The Parker Solar Probe was launched on 2018 August 12 and completed its second orbit on 2019 June 19 with perihelion of 35.7 solar radii. During this time, the Energetic particle Instrument-Hi (EPI-Hi, one of the two energetic particle instruments comprising the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun, ISOIS) measured seven proton intensity increases associated with stream interaction regions (SIRs), two of which appear to be occurring in the same region corotating with the Sun. The events are relatively weak, with observed proton spectra extending to only a few MeV and lasting for a few days. The proton spectra are best characterized by power laws with indices ranging from -4.3 to -6.5, generally softer than events associated with SIRs observed at 1 au and beyond. Helium spectra were also obtained with similar indices, allowing He/H abundance ratios to be calculated for each event. We find values of 0.016-0.031, which are consistent with ratios obtained previously for corotating interaction region events with fast solar wind < 600 km s-1. Using the observed solar wind data combined with solar wind simulations, we study the solar wind structures associated with these events and identify additional spacecraft near 1 au appropriately positioned to observe the same structures after some corotation. Examination of the energetic particle observations from these spacecraft yields two events that may correspond to the energetic particle increases seen by EPI-Hi earlier.

On April 5, 2019, while the Parker Solar Probe was at its 35 solar radius perihelion, the data set collected at 293 samples/sec contained more than 10,000 examples of spiky electric-field-like structures having durations less than 200 milliseconds and amplitudes greater than 10 mV/m. The vast majority of these events was caused by plasma turbulence. Defining dust events as those having similar, narrowly peaked, positive, single-ended signatures, resulted in finding 135 clear dust events, which, after correcting for the low detection efficiently, resulted in an estimate consistent with the 1000 dust events expected from other techniques. Defining time domain structures (TDS) as those having opposite polarity signals in the opposite antennas resulted in finding 238 clear TDS events which, after correcting for the detection efficiency, resulted in an estimated 500-1000 TDS events on this day. The TDS electric fields were bipolar, as expected for electron holes. Several events were found at times when the magnetic field was in the plane of the two measured components of the electric field such that the component of the electric field parallel to the magnetic field was measured. One example of significant parallel electric fields shows the negative potential that classified them as electron holes. Because the TDS observation rate was not uniform with time, it is likely that there were local regions below the spacecraft with field-aligned currents that generated the TDS., First results from the Parker Solar Probe

To better understand the influence of the activity cycle on the solar atmosphere, we report the time variation of the radius observed at 37 GHz ($\lambda$=8.1 mm) obtained by the Mets\"ahovi Radio Observatory (MRO) through Solar Cycles 22 to 24 (1989-2015). Almost 5800 maps were analyzed, however, due to instrumental setups changes the data set showed four distinct behaviors, which requested a normalisation process to allow the whole interval analysis. When the whole period was considered, the results showed a positive correlation index of 0.17 between the monthly means of the solar radius at 37 GHz and solar flux obtained at 10.7 cm (F10.7). This correlation index increased to 0.44, when only the data obtained during the last period without instrumental changes were considered (1999-2015). The solar radius correlation with the solar cycle agrees with the previous results obtained at mm/cm wavelengths (17 and 48 GHz), nevertheless, this result is the opposite of that reported at submillimetre wavelengths (212 and 405 GHz)., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Solar Physics
