The youngest Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G1.9+0.3, produced by a (probable) SN Ia that exploded ~1900 CE, is strongly asymmetric at radio wavelengths, much brighter in the north, but bilaterally symmetric in X-rays. We present the results of X-ray expansion measurements that illuminate the origin of the radio asymmetry. We confirm the mean expansion rate (2011–2015) of 0.58% yr$^{−1}$, but large spatial variations are present. Using the nonparametric "Demons" method, we measure the velocity field throughout the entire SNR, finding that motions vary by a factor of 5, from $0\buildrel{\prime\prime}\over{.} 09$ to $0\buildrel{\prime\prime}\over{.} 44$ yr−1. The slowest shocks are at the outer boundary of the bright northern radio rim, with velocities v s as low as 3600 km s$^{−1}$ (for an assumed distance of 8.5 kpc), much less than v $_{s}$ = 12,000–13,000 km s$^{−1}$ along the X-ray-bright major axis. Such strong deceleration of the northern blast wave most likely arises from the collision of SN ejecta with a much denser than average ambient medium there. This asymmetric ambient medium naturally explains the radio asymmetry. In several locations, significant morphological changes and strongly nonradial motions are apparent. The spatially integrated X-ray flux continues to increase with time. Based on Chandra observations spanning 8.3 yr, we measure its increase at $1.3 \% \pm 0.8 \% $ yr$^{−1}$. The SN ejecta are likely colliding with the asymmetric circumstellar medium ejected by the SN progenitor prior to its explosion., We acknowledge support by NASA through Chandra General Observer Program grants SAO GO5-16069A—C.

The interaction of the Puppis A supernova remnant (SNR) with a neighboring molecular cloud provides a unique opportunity to measure the amount of grain destruction in an SNR shock. Spitzer Space Telescope MIPS imaging of the entire SNR at 24, 70, and 160 μm shows an extremely good correlation with X-ray emission, indicating that the SNR’s IR radiation is dominated by the thermal emission of swept-up interstellar dust, collisionally heated by the hot shocked gas. Spitzer IRS spectral observations targeted both the Bright Eastern Knot (BEK) of the SNR where a small cloud has been engulfed by the supernova blast wave and outlying portions of the associated molecular cloud that are yet to be hit by the shock front. Modeling the spectra from both regions reveals the composition and the grain size distribution of the interstellar dust, both in front of and behind the SNR shock front. The comparison shows that the ubiquitous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of the interstellar medium are destroyed within the BEK, along with nearly 25% of the mass of graphite and silicate dust grains.

We report the discovery of thermal X-ray emission from the youngest Galactic supernova remnant G1.9+0.3, from a 237-ks Chandra observation. We detect strong K-shell lines of Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. In addition, we detect a 4.1 keV line with 99.971% confidence which we attribute to 44Sc, produced by electron capture from 44Ti. Combining the data with our earlier Chandra observation allows us to detect the line in two regions independently. For a remnant age of 100 yr, our measured total line strength indicates synthesis of $(1 - 7) \times 10^{-5}$ solar masses of 44Ti, in the range predicted for both Type Ia and core-collapse supernovae, but somewhat smaller than the $2 \times 10^{-4}$ solar masses reported for Cas A. The line spectrum indicates supersolar abundances. The Fe emission has a width of about 28,000 km/s, consistent with an age of about 100 yr and with the inferred mean shock velocity of 14,000 km/s deduced assuming a distance of 8.5 kpc. Most thermal emission comes from regions of lower X-ray but higher radio surface brightness. We present a 100 ks Suzaku observation of the dMe flare star EV Lac, in which the star was captured undergoing a moderate 1500 s flare. During the flare, the count rate increased by about a factor of 50 and the spectrum showed overall enhanced element abundances relative to quiescence. While the quiescent element abundances confirm the inverse first ionization potential (FIP) effect previously documented for EV Lac, with relatively higher depletions for low FIP elements, abundances during the flare spectra show a composition closer to that of the stellar photosphere. We discuss these results in the context of models that explain abundance fractionation in the stellar chromosphere as a result of the ponderomotive force due to Alfven waves. Stars with FIP or inverse FIP effects arising from differently directed ponderomotive forces may have quite different abundance signatures in their evaporated chromospheric plasma during flares, if the same ponderomotive force also affects thermal conduction downward from the corona. The regulation of the thermal conductivity by the ponderomotive force requires a level of turbulence that is somewhat higher than is normally assumed, but plausible in filamentary conduction models.

We investigate the effect of the circumstellar medium density profile on the X-ray emission from outer ejecta knots in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant using the 1 Ms Chandra observation. The spectra of a number of radial series of ejecta knots at various positions around the remnant are analyzed using techniques similar to those devised in previous papers. We can obtain a reasonable match to our data for a circumstellar density profile proportional to r^-2 as would arise from the steady dense wind of a red supergiant, but the agreement is improved if we introduce a small (0.2-0.3 pc) central cavity around the progenitor into our models. Such a profile might arise if the progenitor emitted a fast tenuous stellar wind for a short period immediately prior to explosion. We review other lines of evidence supporting this conclusion. The spectra also indicate the widespread presence of Fe-enriched plasma that was presumably formed by complete Si burning during the explosion, possibly via alpha-rich freezeout. This component is typically associated with hotter and more highly ionized gas than the bulk of the O- and Si-rich ejecta., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures; ApJ in press

We present Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph and Infrared Array Camera observations of the young supernova remnant E0102 (SNR 1E0102-7219) in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The infrared spectra show strong lines of Ne and O, with the [Ne II] line at 12.8 μm having a large velocity dispersion of 2000-4500 km s^(–1) indicative of fast-moving ejecta. Unlike the young Galactic SNR Cas A, E0102 lacks emission from Ar and Fe. Diagnostics of the observed [Ne III] line pairs imply that [Ne III] emitting ejecta have a low temperature of 650 K, while [Ne V] line pairs imply that the infrared [Ne V] emitting ejecta have a high density of ~10^4 cm^(–3). We have calculated radiative shock models for various velocity ranges including the effects of photoionization. The shock model indicates that the [Ne V] lines come mainly from the cooling zone, which is hot and dense, whereas [Ne II] and [Ne III] come mainly from the photoionization zone, which has a low temperature of 400-1000 K. We estimate an infrared-emitting Ne ejecta mass of 0.04 M_⊙ from the infrared observations, and discuss implications for the progenitor mass. The spectra also have a dust continuum feature peaking at 18 μm that coincides spatially with the ejecta, providing evidence that dust formed in the expanding ejecta. The 18 μm peak dust feature is fitted by a mixture of MgSiO_3 and Si dust grains, while the rest of the continuum requires either carbon or Al2O3 grains. We measure the total dust mass formed within the ejecta of E0102 to be ~0.014 M_⊙. The dust mass in E0102 is thus a factor of a few smaller than that in Cas A. The composition of the dust is also different, showing relatively less silicate and likely no Fe-bearing dust, as is suggested by the absence of Fe-emitting ejecta.

We report on the discovery of fast-moving X-ray--emitting ejecta knots in the Galactic Oxygen-rich supernova remnant Puppis A from XMM-Newton observations. We find an X-ray knotty feature positionally coincident with an O-rich fast-moving optical filament with blue-shifted line emission located in the northeast of Puppis A. We extract spectra from northern and southern regions of the feature. Applying a one-component non-equilibrium ionization model for the two spectra, we find high metal abundances relative to the solar values in both spectra. This fact clearly shows that the feature originates from metal-rich ejecta. In addition, we find that line emission in the two regions is blue-shifted. The Doppler velocities derived in the two regions are different with each other, suggesting that the knotty feature consists of two knots that are close to each other along the line of sight. Since fast-moving O-rich optical knots/filaments are believed to be recoiled metal-rich ejecta, expelled to the opposite direction against the high-velocity central compact object, we propose that the ejecta knots disclosed here are also part of the recoiled material., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

We report the detection and localization of X-ray emitting ejecta in the middle-aged Galactic supernova remnant Puppis A using five observations with the Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometer to survey the eastern and middle portions of the remnant. A roughly 3' by 5', double-peaked region in the north center is found to be highly enriched in Si and other elements relative to the rest of the remnant. The X-ray fitted abundances are otherwise well below the solar values. While the ejecta-enhanced regions show some variation of relative element abundances, there is little evidence for a very strong enhancement of one element over the others in the imaged portion of the remnant, except possibly for a region of O and Ne enhancement in the remnant's south center. There is no spatial correlation between the compact [O III] emitting ejecta knots seen optically and the abundance enhancements seen in X-rays, although they are located in the same vicinity. The map of fitted column density shows strong variations across the remnant that echo earlier X-ray spectral hardness maps. The ionization age (as fitted for single temperature models) is sharply higher in a ridge behind the northeast-east boundary of the remnant, and is probably related to the strong molecular cloud interaction along that boundary. We present initial results of a 750 ks Chandra observation of the remnant of Kepler's supernova of AD 1604. The strength and prominence of iron emission, together with the absence of O-rich ejecta, demonstrate that Kepler resulted from a thermonuclear supernova, even though evidence for circumstellar interaction is also strong. We have analyzed spectra of over 100 small regions, and find that they fall into three classes. (1) The vast majority show Fe L emission between 0.7 and 1 keV and Si and S K alpha emission; we associate these with shocked ejecta. A few of these are found at or beyond the mean blast wave radius. (2) A very few regions show solar O/Fe abundance rations; these we associate with shocked circumstellar medium (CSM). Otherwise O is scarce. (3) A few regions are dominated by continuum, probably synchrotron radiation. Finally, we find no central point source, with a limit about 100 times fainter than the central object in Cas A. The evidence that the blast wave is interacting with CSM may indicate a Ia explosion in a more massive progenitor., Accepted by ApJ Letters

We present the first spatially resolved spectral study of an extragalactic pulsar wind nebula (PWN), that surrounding the 50 ms pulsar B0540-69.3 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using the ACIS instrument on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectral properties of the PWN change at a radius of ~5'', corresponding to a shell detected optically in [O III]. Within this radius, the spectra are well characterized by a simple power law, whose spectral index varies strongly with radius, so that the effective size of the nebula decreases with increasing photon energy. These X-ray measurements support the idea that the [O III] shell represents an outer skin surrounding the wind nebula, analogous to that seen in the Crab Nebula. We use the size-energy relation and radial variability of the X-ray spectral index to estimate PWN parameters, including the radial dependence of the magnetic field, and the average ratio of electromagnetic to particle flux.

We investigate the properties of Fe-rich knots on the east limb of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant using observations with Chandra/ACIS and analysis methods developed in a companion paper. We use the fitted ionization age and electron temperature of the knots to constrain the ejecta density profile and the Lagrangian mass coordinates of the knots. Fe-rich knots which also have strong emission from Si, S, Ar, and Ca are clustered around mass coordinates q~0.35-0.4 in the shocked ejecta; for ejecta mass 2M_sun, this places the knots 0.7-0.8 M_sun out from the center (or 2-2.1 M_sun, allowing for a 1.3 M_sun compact object). We also find an Fe clump that is evidently devoid of line emission from lower mass elements, as would be expected if it were the product of alpha-rich freeze out; the mass coordinate of this clump is similar to those of the other Fe knots., Comment: submitted to ApJ, companion to Laming & Hwang; 25 pages, 6 figures

We present a newChandra observation of Tycho’s supernova remnant with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer. Multicolor Xray imaging reveals new details of the outer shock and ejecta. At energies between 4 and 6 keV, the outline of the outer shock is clearly revealed in X-rays for the first time. The distribution of the emission from lines of Si and Fe are confirmed to have a different morphology from each other, and the Si ejecta are shown to extend to the blast shock at several locations. Characteristic spectra of the outer shock and ejecta are also presented.

A 50 ksec observation of the Supernova Remnant Cas A was taken using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory High Resolution Camera (HRC) to search for periodic signals from the compact source located near the center. Using the HRC-S in imaging mode, problems with correctly assigning times to events were overcome, allowing the period search to be extended to higher frequencies than possible with previous observations. In an extensive analysis of the HRC data, several possible candidate signals are found using various algorithms, including advanced techniques developed by Ransom to search for low significance periodic signals. Of the candidate periods, none is at a high enough confidence level to be particularly favored over the rest. When combined with other information, however (e.g., spectra, total energetics, and the historical age of the remnant), a 12 ms candidate period seems to be more physically plausible than the others, and we use it for illustrative purposes in discussing the possible properties of a putative neutron star in the remnant. We emphasize that this is not necessarily the true period, and that a follow-up observation, scheduled for the fall of 2001, is required. A 50 ksec Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) observation was taken, and analysis of these data for the central object shows that the spectrum is consistent with several forms, and that the emitted X-ray luminosity in the 0.1 -10 keV band is 10^{33}-10^{35}erg cm^{-2}sec^{-1} depending on the spectral model and the interstellar absorption along the line of sight to the source.

We report measurements of X-ray expansion of the youngest Galactic supernova remnant, G1.9+0.3, using Chandra observations in 2007, 2009, and 2011. The measured rates strongly deviate from uniform expansion, decreasing radially by about 60% along the X-ray bright SE-NW axis from 0.84% +/- 0.06% per yr to 0.52% +/- 0.03% per yr. This corresponds to undecelerated ages of 120-190 yr, confirming the young age of G1.9+0.3, and implying a significant deceleration of the blast wave. The synchrotron-dominated X-ray emission brightens at a rate of 1.9% +/- 0.4% per yr. We identify bright outer and inner rims with the blast wave and reverse shock, respectively. Sharp density gradients in either ejecta or ambient medium are required to produce the sudden deceleration of the reverse shock or the blast wave implied by the large spread in expansion ages. The blast wave could have been decelerated recently by an encounter with a modest density discontinuity in the ambient medium, such as found at a wind termination shock, requiring strong mass loss in the progenitor. Alternatively, the reverse shock might have encountered an order-of-magnitude density discontinuity within the ejecta, such as found in pulsating delayed-detonation Type Ia models. We demonstrate that the blast wave is much more decelerated than the reverse shock in these models for remnants at ages similar to G1.9+0.3. Similar effects may also be produced by dense shells possibly associated with high-velocity features in Type Ia spectra. We investigate the observability, by direct and indirect means, of a shock precursor arising from magnetic field amplification by cosmic rays. We estimate the depth of such a precursor under conditions of nonresonant amplification, which can provide magnetic field strengths comparable to those inferred for supernova remnants. Magnetic field generation occurs as the streaming cosmic rays induce a plasma return current, and may be quenched either by nonresonant or resonant channels. In the case of nonresonant saturation, the cosmic rays become magnetized and amplification saturates at higher magnetic fields. The precursor can extend out to $10^{17} - 10^{18}$ cm and is potentially detectable. If resonant saturation occurs, the cosmic rays are scattered by turbulence and the precursor length will likely be much smaller. The dependence of precursor length on shock velocity has implications for electron heating. In the case of resonant saturation, this dependence is similar to that in the more familiar resonantly generated shock precursor, which when expressed in terms of the cosmic ray diffusion coefficient $\varkappa $ and shock velocity $v_s$ is $\varkappa /v_s$. In the nonresonantly saturated case, the precursor length declines less quickly with increasing $v_s$. Where precursor length proportional to $1/v_s$ gives constant electron heating, this increased precursor length could be expected to lead to higher electron temperatures for nonresonant amplification. This should be expected at faster supernova remnant shocks than studied by previous works. Existing results and new data analysis of SN 1006 and Cas A suggest some observational support for this idea., 34 pages, accepted by ApJ

We use data from the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory to image the shell surrounding the pulsar B0540-69.3 and measure its spectral properties. Weak emission-line features, notably of Fe, Mg, and Si, indicate that the shell is composed primarily of ambient material heated by the blast wave. The shell emission in the east is faint and circular in appearance, with a temperature and ionization age of approximately 5 keV and 1010 cm-3 s, respectively. The emission in the west is brighter and has a more complex, distorted morphology and is fitted with significantly lower average temperatures and higher ionization ages. An image with photon energies above 2 keV shows two hard arcs of emission located diametrically opposite each other at the outer boundary of the remnant shell; the spectra from these regions could include a substantial nonthermal component.

We map the average line-of-sight velocities of the X-ray-emitting mass in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A using measurements of the centroid of the Si-Heα blend with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. This 4'' scale map confirms the broad trends noted in previous studies, namely, that the line-of-sight velocity scale is roughly 2000-3000 km s-1, with relatively more blueshifted material in the southeastern region of the remnant than in the northwest; new details are that the northwestern region consists of two arcs, with the southernmost one representing the most redshifted X-ray-emitting material in Cas A. These results are consistent with contemporaneous results from XMM-Newton. The X-ray patterns resemble the complex velocity patterns measured at optical wavelengths for much denser ejecta, and they support the growing body of evidence that the explosion and subsequent evolution of Cas A were highly asymmetrical.

We report the localization of the forward and reversed shock fronts in the young supernova remnant Cas-A using X-ray data obtained with the Chandra Observatory. High resolution X-ray maps resolve a previously unseen X-ray feature encompassing the extremity of the remnant. This feature consists of thin, tangential wisps of emission bordering the outer edge of the thermal X-ray and radio remnant, forming a circular rim, approx. 2.7 in radius. Radio images show a sharp rise in brightness at this X-ray rim, along with a large jump in the synchrotron polarization angle. These characteristics suggest that these wisps are the previously unresolved signature of the forward, or outer, shock. Similarly, we identify the sharp rise in emissivity of the bright shell for both the radio and X-ray line emission associated with the reverse shock. The derived ratio of the averaged forward and reverse shock radii of approx. 3:2 constrains the remnant to have swept up roughly the same amount of mass as was ejected; this suggests that Cas-A is just entering the Sedov phase. Comparison of the X-ray spectra from the two shock regions shows that the equivalent widths of prominent emission lines are significantly lower exterior to the bright shell, as expected if they are respectively identified with the shocked circumstellar material and shocked ejecta. Furthermore, the spectrum of the outer rim itself is dominated by power-law emission, likely the counterpart of the non-thermal component previously seen at energies above 10 keV.

We present X-ray emission line equivalent width images of the bright Galactic supernova remnant Cassiopeia A for the elements Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe using a 50,000 s observation with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The images essentially identify the bulk of detectable ejecta of these elements over a wide range of surface brightness, and show morphologies distinctly different from that of the broadband X-ray emission and of the 4-6 keV continuum emission. The Si, S, Ar, and Ca maps, while different in turn from those of Fe, show that these X-ray emitting ejecta are distributed similarly to the fast optical ejecta knots, and clearly delineate the X-ray counterpart of the northeast optical jet. Low surface brightness regions just outside the bright shell in the north and west are also shown to have strong line emission. The strong Fe emission is exterior to that of other elements in the east, as previously noted, but is generally coincident elsewhere. The projected interior has relatively little emission traced by high line equivalent widths.

We consider the nature of the elusive neutron star candidate 1E~161348-5055 using X-ray observations obtained with the ASCA Observatory. The compact X-ray source is centered on the shell-type Galactic supernova remnant RCW103 and has been interpreted as a cooling neutron star associated with the remnant. The X-ray spectrum of the remnant shell can be characterized by a non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) thermal model for a shocked plasma of temperature kT ~ 0.3 keV. The spectrum falls off rapidly above 3 keV to reveal a point source in the spectrally-resolved images, at the location of 1E~161348-5055. A black-body model fit to the source spectrum yields a temperature kT = 0.6 keV, with an unabsorbed 0.5-10 keV luminosity of Lx ~ 10E34 erg/s (for an assumed distance of 3.3 kpc, both of which are at least a factor of 2 higher than predicted by cooling neutron star models. Alternatively, a power-law model for the source continuum gives a steep photon index of ~ 3.2, similar to that of other radio-quiet, hard X-ray point sources associated with supernova remnants. 1E~161348-5055 may be prototypical of a growing class of radio-quiet neutron stars revealed by ASCA; we suggest that these objects account for previously hidden neutron stars associated with supernova remnants.

Significantly subsolar metallicities have been reported in X-rays for a variety of sources, often in disagreement with theoretical expectations or with measurements at other wavelengths. As a test of the reliability of the X-ray abundances in systems dominated by thermal emission from hot gas in collisional ionization equilibrium, we compare Fe abundances determined independently from the Fe L and Fe K emission regions in simple one- and two-temperature thermal fits to ASCA X-ray spectra of the elliptical galaxy M87 and five galaxy clusters. We find that the Fe L and Fe K abundances are consistent within or near their 90% confidence errors, which would not necessarily be the case if there were severe problems with the atomic physics or with the instrument calibrations. Our data cover a range of plasma temperatures kT = 2-4 keV, where the Fe L emission arises primarily from Fe XXIII and XXIV and the Fe K emission arises primarily from Fe XXV. There is also a contribution from less ionized gas at lower temperatures in M87. For M87, the abundances from Fe K are systematically lower by 30%-50% than those from Fe L, and the differences are attributable to the complicated temperature structure in the central cooling flow. Allowing for the possibility of excess absorption of the emission from the cooling flow increases the systematic offset of the Fe L and Fe K abundances to 40%-80% in the simple model we consider. The cluster spectra, on the other hand, are for nearly isothermal regions outside any central cooling flow and the abundances have no systematic offset. The consistency between the Fe K and Fe L abundances, which is also seen in other clusters and in the corona of Ar Lac, indicates that whatever atomic physics uncertainties exist in the current codes are not likely to render Fe abundance measurements unreliable within the ~30%-50% agreement we find for the systems we examined. The results using various thermal emission codes differ by 15%-20%, showing the level of scatter due just to different assumptions about the atomic physics. The atomic rates for H- and He-like ions, which are relevant for the determination of abundances in elements other than Fe, are more accurately known than those for less ionized species that dominate the complicated Fe L emission. In light of the support our results give to the abundances derived from ASCA data for clusters and bright elliptical galaxies, we consider briefly the plausibility of subsolar abundances in elliptical galaxies.

We introduce a deep (670 ks) X-ray survey of the SN1006 remnant from Chandra, plus a deep H-alpha image from the 4m telescope at CTIO. Comparison with Chandra images from 2003 gives the first measurement of X-ray proper motions around the entire rim. We find that the expansion velocity varies significantly with azimuth: the highest velocity of ~7400 km/s (almost 2.5 times that in the NW) is found along the SE rim, where both kinematics and spectra indicate that most of the X-rays stem from undecelerated ejecta. Asymmetries in the distribution of ejecta are seen on a variety of spatial scales. Si-rich ejecta are especially prominent in the SE quadrant, while O and Mg are more uniformly distributed, indicating large-scale asymmetries arising from the explosion itself. Ne emission is strongest in a sharp filament just behind the primary shock along the NW rim, where the preshock density is highest. Here the Ne is likely interstellar, while Ne within the shell may include a contribution from ejecta. Within the interior of the projected shell we find a few isolated "bullets" of what appear to be supernova ejecta that are immediately preceded by bowshocks seen in H-alpha--features we interpret as ejecta knots that have reached relatively dense regions of the surrounding ISM. Recent 3-dimensional hydrodynamic models for SN Ia display small-scale features that resemble the ones seen in X-rays in SN1006; an origin in the explosion itself or from subsequent instabilities both remain viable options. We have expanded the search for precursor X-ray emission ahead of a synchrotron-dominated shock front. Profiles along both NE and SW rims require that a precursor be thinner than about 3 arcsec and fainter than about 5% of the post-shock peak. These limits suggest that the magnetic field is amplified by a factor of 7 or more in a narrow precursor region, promoting diffusive particle acceleration., 47 pages, 4 tables, 15 figures

We present a survey of the X-ray emitting ejecta in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant based on an extensive analysis of over 6000 spectral regions extracted on 2.5-10" angular scales using the Chandra 1 Ms observation. We interpret these results in the context of hydrodynamical models for the evolution of the remnant. The distributions of fitted temperature and ionization age, and the implied mass coordinates, are highly peaked and suggest that the ejecta were subjected to multiple secondary shocks following reverse shock interaction with ejecta inhomogeneities. Based on the fitted emission measure and element abundances, and an estimate of the emitting volume, we derive masses for the X-ray emitting ejecta and also show the distribution of the mass of various elements over the remnant. An upper limit to the total shocked Fe mass visible in X-rays appears to be roughly 0.13 M_sun, which accounts for nearly all of the mass expected in Fe ejecta. We find two populations of Fe ejecta, that associated with normal Si-burning and that possibly associated with alpha-rich freeze-out, with a mass ratio of approximately 2:1. Essentially all of the observed Fe (both components) lies well outside the central regions of the SNR, possibly having been ejected by hydrodynamic instabilities during the explosion. Like many young supernova remnants, SN 1006 exhibits what appear to be clumps of ejecta close to or protruding beyond the main blast wave. In this paper we examine 3 such protrusions along the east rim. They are semi-aligned with ejecta fingers behind the shock-front, and exhibit emission lines from O VII and O VIII. We first interpret them in the context of an upstream medium modified by the saturated nonresonant Bell instability which enhances the growth of Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities when advected postshock. We discuss their apparent periodicity if the spacing is determined by properties of the remnant or by a preferred size scale in the cosmic ray precursor. We also briefly discuss the alternative that these structures have an origin in the ejecta structure of the explosion itself. In this case the young evolutionary age of SN 1006 would imply density structure within the outermost layers of the explosion with potentially important implications for deflagration and detonation in thermonuclear supernova explosion models., 5 pages, ApJL in press

We show that the expansion of ejecta in Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR) is consistent with a spherically symmetric shell, based on Suzaku measurements of the Doppler broadened X-ray emission lines. All the strong K_alpha line emission show broader widths at the center than at the rim, while the centroid energies are constant across the remnant (except for Ca). This is the pattern expected for Doppler broadening due to expansion of the SNR ejecta in a spherical shell. To determine the expansion velocities of the ejecta, we applied a model for each emission line feature having two Gaussian components separately representing red- and blue-shifted gas, and inferred the Doppler velocity difference between these two components directly from the fitted centroid energy difference. Taking into account the effect of projecting a three-dimensional shell to the plane of the detector, we derived average spherical expansion velocities independently for the K_alpha emission of Si, S, Ar, and Fe, and K_beta of Si. We found that the expansion velocities of Si, S, and Ar ejecta of 4700+/-100 km/s are distinctly higher than that obtained from Fe K_alpha emission, 4000+/-300 km/s, which is consistent with segregation of the Fe in the inner ejecta. We report on the discovery of X-ray--emitting O-Ne-Mg-rich ejecta in the middle-aged Galactic O-rich supernova remnant Puppis A with Chandra and XMM-Newton. We use line ratios to identify a low-ionization filament running parallel to the northeastern edge of the remnant that requires supersolar abundances, particularly for O, Ne, and Mg, which we interpret to be from O-Ne-Mg-rich ejecta. The discovery of the youngest Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G1.9+0.3 has allowed a look at a stage of SNR evolution never before observed. We analyze the 50 ks Chandra observation with particular regard to spectral variations. The very high column density ($N_H \sim 6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) implies that dust scattering is important, and we use a simple scattering model in our spectral analysis. The integrated X-ray spectrum of G1.9+0.3 is well described by synchrotron emission from a power-law electron distribution with an exponential cutoff. Using our measured radio flux and including scattering effects, we find a rolloff frequency of $5.4 (3.0, 10.2) \times 10^{17}$ Hz ($h \nu_{\rm roll} = 2.2$ keV). Including scattering in a two-region model gives lower values of \nu_roll by over a factor of 2. Dividing G1.9+0.3 into six regions, we find a systematic pattern in which spectra are hardest (highest \nu_roll) in the bright SE and NW limbs of the shell. They steepen as one moves around the shell or into the interior. The extensions beyond the bright parts of the shell have the hardest spectra of all. We interpret the results in terms of dependence of shock acceleration properties on the obliquity angle $\theta_{\rm Bn}$ between the shock velocity and a fairly uniform upstream magnetic field. This interpretation probably requires a Type Ia event. We use \suzaku observations to measure the spatial variation of the Fe K$\alpha$ line with radius in the \tycho supernova remnant. The Fe line widths show a significant decrease from a FWHM value of 210 eV at the center to 130 eV at the rim. Over the same radial range the line center energy remains nearly constant. These observations are consistent with a scenario in which the shell of Fe-emitting ejecta in \tycho is expanding at speeds of 2800--3350 km s$^{-1}$. The minimum line width we measure is still a factor of two larger than expected from a single component plasma emission model. If thermal Doppler broadening is the dominant additional source of broadening, we infer an ion temperature of $(1--3) \times 10^{10}$ K., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, To appear in ApJ Letters

We present results from X-ray analysis of a Galactic middle-aged supernova remnant (SNR) G156.2+5.7 which is bright and largely extended in X-ray wavelengths, showing a clear circular shape (radius about 50'). Using the Suzaku satellite, we observed this SNR in three pointings; partially covering the northwestern rim, the eastern rim, and the central portion of this SNR. In the northwestern rim and the central portion, we confirm that the X-ray spectra consist of soft and hard-tail emission, while in the eastern rim we find no significant hard-tail emission. The soft emission is well fitted by non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) model. In the central portion, a two-component (the interstellar medium and the metal-rich ejecta) NEI model fits the soft emission better than a one-component NEI model from a statistical point of view. The relative abundances in the ejecta component suggest that G156.2+5.7 is a remnant from a core-collapse SN explosion whose progenitor mass is less than 15 M_solar. The origin of the hard-tail emission is highly likely non-thermal synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons. In the northwestern rim, the relativistic electrons seem to be accelerated by a forward shock with a slow velocity of about 500 km/sec.

Recent radio observations of the small Galactic supernova remnant G1.9+0.3 made at 4.86 GHz with the VLA are presented, and compared with earlier observations at 1.49 GHz which have a comparable resolution (10 x 4 arcsec^2). These show that the radio emission from this remnant has expanded significantly, by about 15 per cent over 23 years, with a current outer diameter of approximately 92 arcsec. This expansion confirms that G1.9+0.3 is the youngest Galactic remnant yet identified, only about 150 years old at most. Recent, lower resolution, 1.43-GHz observations are also discussed, and the integrated flux densities from these and the 4.86-GHz observations are compared with earlier results. Our 50 ks Chandra observation of the small radio supernova remnant (SNR) G1.9+0.3 shows a complete shell structure with strong bilateral symmetry, about $100''$ in diameter. The radio morphology is also shell-like, but only about $84''$ in diameter, based on observations made in 1985. We attribute the size difference to expansion between 1985 and our Chandra observations of 2007. Expansion is confirmed in comparing radio images from 1985 and 2008. We deduce that G1.9+0.3 is of order 100 years old -- the youngest supernova remnant in the Galaxy. Based on a very high absorbing column density of $5.5 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, we place G1.9+0.3 near the Galactic Center, at a distance of about 8.5 kpc, where the mean remnant radius would be about 2 pc, and the required expansion speed about $14,000$ km s$^{-1}$. The X-ray spectrum is featureless and well-described by the exponentially cut off synchrotron model {\tt srcut}. With the radio flux at 1 GHz fixed at 0.9 Jy, we find a spectral index of 0.65 and a rolloff frequency of $1.4 \times 10^{18}$ Hz. The implied characteristic rolloff electron energy of about $94 (B/10 \mu{\rm G})^{-1/2}$ TeV is the highest ever reported for a shell supernova remnant. It can easily be reached by standard diffusive shock acceleration, given the very high shock velocities; it can be well described by either age-limited or synchrotron-loss-limited acceleration. Tycho's supernova remnant was observed by the XIS and HXD instruments onboard the Suzaku satellite on 2006 June 26-29 for 92 ks. The spectrum up to 30 keV was well fitted with a two-component model, consisting of a power-law with photon index of 2.7 and a thermal bremsstrahlung model with temperature of 4.7 keV. The former component can alternatively be modeled as synchrotron emission from a population of relativistic electrons with an estimated roll-off energy of around 1 keV. In the XIS spectra, in addition to the prominent Fe K_alpha line (6.445 keV), we observe for the first time significant K_alpha line emission from the trace species Cr and Mn at energies of 5.48 keV and 5.95 keV, respectively. Faint K_beta lines from Ca (4.56 keV) and Fe (7.11 keV) are also seen. In the framework of the study of supernova remnants and their complex interaction with the interstellar medium and the circumstellar material, we focus on the galactic supernova remnant W49B. Its morphology exhibits an X-ray bright elongated nebula, terminated on its eastern end by a sharp perpendicular structure aligned with the radio shell. The X-ray spectrum of W49B is characterized by strong K emission lines from Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. There is a variation of the temperature in the remnant with the highest temperature found in the eastern side and the lowest one in the western side. The analysis of the recent observations of W49B indicates that the remnant may be the result of an asymmetric bipolar explosion where the ejecta are collimated along a jet-like structure and the eastern jet is hotter and more Fe-rich than the western one. Another possible scenario associates the X-ray emission with a spherical explosion where parts of the ejecta are interacting with a dense belt of ambient material. To overcome this ambiguity we present new results of the analysis of an XMM-Newton observation and we perform estimates of the mass and energy of the remnant. We conclude that the scenario of an anisotropic jet-like explosion explains quite naturally our observation results, but the association of W49B with a hypernova and a gamma-ray burst, although still possible, is not directly supported by any evidence., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research

We identify the radio-emitting shell-type supernova remnant G15.9+0.2 as a relatively young remnant containing an X-ray point source that may be its associated neutron star. The integrated spectrum of the remnant shell obtained from our 30 ks exploratory Chandra observation shows very strong lines that require elevated element abundances from ejecta, in particular of sulfur. A plane-shock model fit gives a temperature $kT = 0.9 (0.8, 1.0)$ keV, an ionization timescale $n_et = 6 (4, 9) \times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$ s, and a sulfur abundance of 2.1 (1.7, 2.7) times solar (90% confidence limits). Two-component models with one solar and one enriched component are also plausible, but are not well constrained by the data. Various estimates give a remnant age of order $10^3$ yr, which would make G15.9+0.2 among the dozen or so youngest remnants in the Galaxy. The sparse point source spectrum is consistent with either a steep $\Gamma \sim$ 4 power law or a $kT \sim$ 0.4 keV blackbody. The spectrum is absorbed by a H column density $N_H \sim 4 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ similar to that required for the remnant shell. The implied 2--9.5 keV source luminosity is about $10^{33}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ for an assumed distance of 8.5 kpc consistent with the high absorption column. Probably not, but it is interesting nevertheless to investigate just how close Cas A might have come to generating such an event. Focusing on the northeast jet filaments, we analyze the polar regions of the recently acquired very deep 1 Ms Chandra X-ray observation. We infer that the so-called "jet" regions are indeed due to jets emanating from the explosion center, and not due to polar cavities in the circumstellar medium at the time of explosion. We place limits on the equivalent isotropic explosion energy in the polar regions (around 2.3 x 10^52 ergs), and the opening angle of the x-ray emitting ejecta (around 7 degrees), which give a total energy in the NE jet of order 10^50 ergs; an order of magnitude or more lower than inferred for "typical" GRBs. While the Cas A progenitor and explosion exhibit many of the features associated with GRB hosts, e.g. extensive presupernova mass loss and rotation, and jets associated with the explosion, we speculate that the recoil of the compact central object, with velocity 330 km/s, may have rendered the jet unstable. In such cases the jet rapidly becomes baryon loaded, if not truncated altogether. Although unlikely to have produced a gamma ray burst, the jets in Cas A suggest that such outflows may be common features of core-collapse SNe., Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJ

We introduce a million-second observation of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The bipolar structure of the Si-rich ejecta (NE jet and SW counterpart) is clearly evident in the new images, and their chemical similarity is confirmed by their spectra. These are most likely due to jets of ejecta as opposed to cavities in the circumstellar medium, since we can reject simple models for the latter. The properties of these jets and the Fe-rich ejecta will provide clues to the explosion of Cas A., Comment: 4 pages LaTeX with 2 figures; ApJL,in press

We present the results of a study of discrete X-ray sources in NGC 6946 using a deep Chandra ACIS observation. Based on the slope of the log N-log S distribution and the general correlation of sources with the spiral arms, we infer that the overall discrete source sample in NGC 6946 is dominated by high mass X-ray binaries, in contrast to the source distributions in M31 and the Milky Way. This is consistent with the higher star formation rate in NGC 6946 than in those galaxies. We find that the strong X-ray sources in the region of the galactic center do not correlate in detail with images of the region in the near-IR, although one of them may be coincident with the galactic center. The non-central ultra-luminous X-ray source in NGC 6946, previously identified with a supernova remnant, has an X-ray spectrum and luminosity that is inconsistent with either a traditional pulsar wind nebula or a blast wave remnant., accepted ApJ

We present the first results coming from the observation of Kepler's supernova remnant obtained with the EPIC instruments on board the XMM-Newton satellite. We focus on the images and radial profiles of the emission lines (Si K, Fe L, Fe K) and of the high energy continuum. Chiefly, the Fe L and Si K emission-line images are generally consistent with each other and the radial profiles show that the Si K emission extends to a larger radius than the Fe L emission (distinctly in the southern part of the remnant). Therefore, in contrast to Cas A, no inversion of the Si- and Fe-rich ejecta layers is observed in Kepler. Moreover, the Fe K emission peaks at a smaller radius than the Fe L emission, which implies that the temperature increases inwards in the ejecta. The 4-6 keV high energy continuum map shows the same distribution as the asymmetric emission-line images except in the southeast where there is a strong additional emission. A two color image of the 4-6 keV and 8-10 keV high energy continuum illustrates that the hardness variations of the continuum are weak all along the remnant except in a few knots. The asymmetry in the Fe K emission-line is not associated with any asymmetry in the Fe K equivalent width map. The Si K maps lead to the same conclusions. Hence, abundance variations do not cause the north-south brightness asymmetry. The strong emission in the north may be due to overdensities in the circumstellar medium. In the southeastern region of the remnant, the lines have a very low equivalent width and the X-ray emission is largely nonthermal., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a detailed analysis of Chandra X-ray spectra from individual ejecta knots in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The spectra are fitted to give the electron temperature and (single) ionization age. These quantities are compared with the predictions of self similar hydrodynamic models incorporating time dependent ionization and radiation losses, and Coulomb electron-ion equilibration behind the reverse shock, for a variety of different ejecta density profiles described by a uniform density core and a power law envelope. We find that the ejecta close to the "jet" region in the NE, but not actually in the jet itself, have a systematically shallower outer envelope than ejecta elsewhere in the remnant, and we interpret this as being due to more energy of the initial explosion being directed in this polar direction as opposed to equatorially. The degree of asymmetry we infer is at the low end of that generally modelled in asymmetric core-collapse simulations, and may possibly be used to rule out highly asymmetric explosion models., Comment: 32 pages, submitted to ApJ

We present Chandra X-ray images of Tycho's supernova remnant that delineate its outer shock as a thin, smooth rim along the straight northeastern edge and most of the circular western half. The images also show that the Si and S ejecta are highly clumpy, and have reached near the forward shock at numerous locations. Most of the X-ray spectra that we examine along the rim show evidence of line emission from Si and S ejecta, while the continuum is well-represented by either a thermal or nonthermal model. If the continuum is assumed to be thermal, the electron temperatures at the rim are all similar at about 2 keV, while the ionization ages are very low, because of the overall weakness of the line emission. These electron temperatures are substantially below those expected for equilibration of the electron and ion temperatures, assuming shock velocities inferred from radio and X-ray expansion measurements; the electron to mean temperature ratios are, Comment: ApJ, in press; 32 pages LaTeX, 9 postscript figures; replaced version to better match ApJ version

Infrared continuum observations provide a means of investigating the physical composition of the dust in the ejecta and swept up medium of the Cas A supernova remnant. Using low resolution Spitzer IRS spectra (5-35 $\mu$m), and broad-band Herschel PACS imaging (70, 100, and 160 $\mu$m), we identify characteristic dust spectra, associated with ejecta layers that underwent distinct nuclear burning histories. The most luminous spectrum exhibits strong emission features at $\sim9$ and 21 $\mu$m and is closely associated with ejecta knots with strong Ar emission lines. The dust features can be reproduced by magnesium silicate grains with relatively low Mg to Si ratios. Another dust spectrum is associated with ejecta having strong Ne emission lines. It has no indication of any silicate features, and is best fit by Al$_2$O$_3$ dust. A third characteristic dust spectrum shows features that are best matched by magnesium silicates with a relatively high Mg to Si ratio. This dust is primarily associated with the X-ray emitting shocked ejecta, but it is also evident in regions where shocked interstellar or circumstellar material is expected. However, the identification of dust composition is not unique, and each spectrum includes an additional featureless dust component of unknown composition. Colder dust of indeterminate composition is associated with emission from the interior of the SNR, where the reverse shock has not yet swept up and heated the ejecta. Most of the dust mass in Cas A is associated with this unidentified cold component, which is $\lesssim0.1$ $M_{\odot}$. We discuss the X-ray emission observed from Supernova Remnant 1987A with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We analyze a high resolution spectrum obtained in 1999 October with the high energy transmission grating (HETG). From this spectrum we measure the strengths and an average profile of the observed X-ray lines. We also analyze a high signal-to-noise ratio CCD spectrum obtained in 2000 December. The good statistics (~ 9250 counts) of this spectrum and the high spatial resolution provided by the telescope allow us to perform spectroscopic analyses of different regions of the remnant. We discuss the relevant shock physics that can explain the observed X-ray emission. The X-ray spectra are well fit by plane parallel shock models with post-shock electron temperatures of ~ 2.6 keV and ionization ages of ~ 6 x 10^10 cm^3/s. The combined X-ray line profile has a FWHM of ~ 5000 km/s, indicating a blast wave speed of ~ 3500 km/s. At this speed, plasma with a mean post-shock temperature of ~ 17 keV is produced. This is direct evidence for incomplete electron-ion temperature equilibration behind the shock. Assuming this shock temperature, we constrain the amount of collisionless electron heating at the shock front at T_e0 / T_s = 0.11 (+0.02,-0.01). We find that the plasma has low metallicity (abundances are ~ 0.1 -- 0.4 solar) and is nitrogen enriched (N/O ~ 0.8 by number), similar to that found for the equatorial ring. Analysis of the spectra from different regions of the remnant reveals slight differences in the parameters of the emitting plasma. The plasma is cooler near the optical Spot 1 (at position angle ~ 30 degrees) and in the eastern half of the remnant, where the bright optical spots are found, than in the western half, consistent with the presence of slower (~ 500 km/s) shocks entering denser ring material., 36 pages, 9 figures. We present high resolution Chandra observations of the remnant of SN1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The high angular resolution of the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) permits us to resolve the X-ray remnant. We find that the remnant is shell-like in morphology, with X-ray peaks associated with some of the optical hot spots seen in HST images. The X-ray light curve has departed from the linear flux increase observed by ROSAT, with a 0.5-2.0 keV luminosity of 1.5 x 10^35 erg/s in January 2000. We set an upper limit of 2.3 x 10^34 ergs/s on the luminosity of any embedded central source (0.5 - 2 keV). We present X-ray images of Tycho's supernova remnant in emission line features of Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe, plus the continuum, using data obtained by the imaging spectrometers onboard the ASCA X-ray satellite. All the images show the shell-like morphology characteristic of previously obtained broad-band X-ray images, but are clearly distinct from each other. We use image reconstruction techniques to achieve a spatial resolution of ~0.8'. Line intensity ratios are used to make inferences about the remnant's physical state, on average for the entire remnant, and with angular position around the rim. The average temperature (T) of the Si and S ejecta in the remnant is (0.8-1.1) X 10^7 K and the average ionization age (nt) is (0.8-1.3) X 10^11 cm^-3 s. For a constant nt, the observed relative brightness variations of Si and S line image profiles with azimuthalangle imply differences of roughly a factor of 1.3-1.8 in the temperature. We compare the radial brightness profiles of our images to simple geometrical models, and find that a spherical emitting geometry is favored over a torus. A spherical geometry is further supported by the absence of systematic Doppler shifts across the remnant. The radial fit results also suggest that some radial mixing of the ejecta has occurred. However, the azimuthally averaged Fe K image peaks at a markedly lower radius than the other images. The average Fe K / Fe L line intensity ratio and the position of the Fe K energy centroid support a T several times higher and an nt approx. a factor of ten lower than for the other elements, and imply that the Fe ejecta must have retained some of its stratification. Although many of the features in the 4-6 keV X-ray continuum correspond to those in the radio, there is no obvious correlation between the relative brightness in these bands., 17 pages plus 9 figures, LaTeX type, uses aas2pp4.sty. We have used optical echelle spectra along with ROSAT and ASCA X-ray spectra to test the hypothesis that the southern portion of the N44 X-ray bright region is the result of a blowout structure. Three pieces of evidence now support this conclusion. First, the filamentary optical morphology corresponding with the location of the X-ray bright South Bar suggests the blowout description (Chu et al 1993). Second, optical echelle spectra show evidence of high velocity (~90 km/sec) gas in the region of the blowout. Third, X-ray spectral fits show a lower temperature for the South Bar than the main superbubble region of Shell 1. We present a measurement of the expansion and brightening of G1.9+0.3, the youngest Galactic supernova remnant, comparing Chandra X-ray images obtained in 2007 and 2009. A simple uniform expansion model describes the data well, giving an expansion rate of 0.642 +/- 0.049 % yr^-1, and a flux increase of 1.7 +/- 1.0 % yr^-1. Without deceleration, the remnant age would then be 156 +/- 11 yr, consistent with earlier results. Since deceleration must have occurred, this age is an upper limit; we estimate an age of about 110 yr, or an explosion date of about 1900. The flux increase is comparable to reported increases at radio wavelengths. G1.9+0.3 is the only Galactic supernova remnant increasing in flux, with implications for the physics of electron acceleration in shock waves, 14 pages, 3 figures. Accepted by ApJ (Letters)

The ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) is used to perform an exploratory study of four fields in the Carina spiral arm containing five radio supernova remnants, only one of which has previously been studied in X-rays. We present upper limits for the detection in X-rays of G298.5 - 0.3, G298.6 - 0.0, and G299.0+0.2, and report a 4 sigma detection of G296.8-0.3. In addition, we present detailed spatial and spectral analysis of the bright X-ray remnant G296.1-0.7, which has previously been studied by both the Einstein IPC and EXOSAT LE/CMA. We detect relatively slight, but statistically significant, variations in the spectrum across the remnant via spatially resolved spectral fits and a study of the spatial variation of hardness ratios. In general, the spectrum is characteristic of a thermal plasma with kT about 0.2 keV and N(sub H) about 1.5 x 10(exp 21/sq. cm). The total X-ray emitting mass is estimated to be about 250 solar mass for an optically estimated distance of 4 kpc to the remnant. At this distance, the linear dimensions of the remnant are roughly 35 - 50 pc, implying an age on the order of 20,000 yr. Assuming that X-ray and radio brightnesses are related by SIGMA(sub R) proportional to SIGMA(exp 0.69)(sub X) and that the four radio remnants have X-ray spectral characteristics similar to G296.1-0.7, we find that the column densities to these sources must be several times 10(exp 22)/sq cm in order to explain their low X-ray count rates. This column density is considerably in excess of the X-ray fitted column density to G296.1-0.7, but is comparable to the total column densities in H I measured via the 21 cm line in the directions to all five remnants. This implies that G296.1 - 0.7 is at a significantly smaller distance than the other remnants.

A joint nonequilibrium ionization analysis of spectral data from the Einstein Observatory of the SNR N132D in the LMC is presented on the basis of data from the Focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer (FPCS) and the Solid State Spectrometer (SSS), and lower spectral resolution data from the IPC and the Monitor Proportional Counter (MPC). The FPCS detected individual emission lines of O VII, O VIII, Ne IX, Ne X, Fe XVII, and possibly Fe XX. Measured line widths for the oxygen lines suggest Doppler broadening that is roughly consistent with optically measured expansion velocities of 2250 km/s. At the SSS/IPC temperature, FPCS flux ratios constrain the O/Fe abundance to be at least 1.9 times its solar value and the O/Ne abundance to be 0.2-1.0 times its solar value. Models for remnants with progenitor masses of 20 and 25 solar masses are completely consistent with the data, while remnants with progenitor masses of 13 and 15 solar masses can be made consistent if the progenitors are required to eject a large fraction of their iron cores.

G1.9+0.3 is the youngest known Galactic supernova remnant (SNR), with an estimated supernova (SN) explosion date of about 1900, and most likely located near the Galactic Center. Only the outermost ejecta layers with free-expansion velocities larger than about 18,000 km/s have been shocked so far in this dynamically young, likely Type Ia SNR. A long (980 ks) Chandra observation in 2011 allowed spatially-resolved spectroscopy of heavy-element ejecta. We denoised Chandra data with the spatio-spectral method of Krishnamurthy et al., and used a wavelet-based technique to spatially localize thermal emission produced by intermediate-mass elements (IMEs: Si and S) and iron. The spatial distribution of both IMEs and Fe is extremely asymmetric, with the strongest ejecta emission in the northern rim. Fe Kalpha emission is particularly prominent there, and fits with thermal models indicate strongly oversolar Fe abundances. In a localized, outlying region in the northern rim, IMEs are less abundant than Fe, indicating that undiluted Fe-group elements (including 56Ni) with velocities larger than 18,000 km/s were ejected by this SN. But in the inner west rim, we find Si- and S-rich ejecta without any traces of Fe, so high-velocity products of O-burning were also ejected. G1.9+0.3 appears similar to energetic Type Ia SNe such as SN 2010jn where iron-group elements at such high free-expansion velocities have been recently detected. The pronounced asymmetry in the ejecta distribution and abundance inhomogeneities are best explained by a strongly asymmetric SN explosion, similar to those produced in some recent 3D delayed-detonation Type Ia models., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ApJ Letters
