We explore the significance of bars in triggering central star formation (SF) and AGN activity for spiral galaxy evolution using a volume-limited sample with $0.02070\rm km s^{-1}$ selected from SDSS DR7. On a central SF rate-$\sigma$ plane, we measure the fraction of galaxies with strong bars in our sample and also the AGN fractions for barred and non-barred galaxies, respectively. The comparison between the bar and AGN fractions reveals a causal connection between the two phenomena of SF quenching and AGN activity. A massive BH and abundant gas fuels are sufficient conditions to trigger AGNs. We infer that the AGNs triggered by satisfying the two conditions drive the strong AGN feedback, suddenly suppressing the central SF and leaving the SF sequence. We find that in galaxies where either of the two conditions is not sufficient, bars are a great help for the AGN triggering, accelerating the entire process of evolution, which is particularly evident in pseudo-bulge galaxies. All of our findings are obtained only when plotted in terms of their central velocity dispersion and central SFR (not galactic scale SFR), indicating that the AGN-driven SF quenching is confined in the central kpc region., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, published in MNRAS

We examine whether galaxy environments directly affect triggering nuclear activity in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) local spiral galaxies using a volume-limited sample with the $r$-band absolute magnitude $M_{r} < -19.0$ and $0.02 < z < 0.055$ selected from the SDSS Data Release 7. To avoid incompleteness of the central velocity dispersion $\sigma$ of the volume-limited sample and to fix the black hole mass affecting AGN activity, we limit the sample to a narrow $\sigma$ range of $130$ km s$^{-1}, Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We quantify the relative role of galaxy environment and bar presence on AGN triggering in face-on spiral galaxies using a volume-limited sample with 0.02 z M r σ > 70 selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7. To separate their possible entangled effects, we divide the sample into bar and non-bar samples, and each sample is further divided into three environment cases of isolated galaxies, interacting galaxies with a pair, and cluster galaxies. The isolated case is used as a control sample. For these six cases, we measure AGN fractions at a fixed central star formation rate and central velocity dispersion, σ. We demonstrate that the internal process of the bar-induced gas inflow is more efficient in AGN triggering than the external mechanism of the galaxy interactions in groups and cluster outskirts. The significant effects of bar instability and galaxy environments are found in galaxies with a relatively less massive bulge. We conclude that from the perspective of AGN–galaxy coevolution, a massive black hole is one of the key drivers of spiral galaxy evolution. If it is not met, a bar instability helps the evolution, and in the absence of bars, galaxy interactions/mergers become important. In other words, in the presence of a massive central engine, the role of the two gas inflow mechanisms is reduced or almost disappears. We also find that bars in massive galaxies are very decisive in increasing AGN fractions when the host galaxies are inside clusters.

We study the effects of bulge elongation on the star formation activity in the centers of spiral galaxies using the data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. We construct a volume-limited sample of face-on spiral galaxies with $M_r < -$19.5 mag at 0.02 $\leq z, Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using a cosmological ΛCDM simulation, we analyze the differences between the widely-used spin parameters suggested by Peebles and Bullock. The dimensionless spin parameter λ proposed by Peebles is theoretically well-justified but includes an annoying term, the potential energy, which cannot be directly obtained from observations and is computationally expensive to calculate in numerical simulations. The Bullock’s spin parameter λ′ avoids this problem assuming the isothermal density profile of a virialized halo in the Newtonian potential model. However, we find that there exists a substantial discrepancy between λ and λ′ depending on the adopted potential model (Newtonian or Plummer) to calculate the halo total energy and that their redshift evolutions differ to each other significantly. Therefore, we introduce a new spin parameter, λ′′, which is simply designed to roughly recover the value of λ but to use the same halo quantities as used in λ′. If the Plummer potential is adopted, the λ′′ is related to the Bullock’s definition as λ′′ = 0.80 × (1 + z)? 1/12 λ′. Hence, the new spin parameter λ′′ distribution becomes consistent with a log-normal distribution frequently seen for the λ′ while its mean value is much closer to that of λ. On the other hand, in case of the Newtonian potential model, we obtain the relation of λ′′ = (1 + z)? 1/8 λ′; there is no significant difference at z = 0 as found by others but λ′ becomes more overestimated than λ or λ′′ at higher redshifts. We also investigate the dependence of halo spin parameters on halo mass and redshift. We clearly show that although the λ′ for small-mass halos with Mh 12 M ⊙ seems redshift independent after z = 1, all the spin parameters explored, on the whole, show a stronger correlation with the increasing halo mass at higher redshifts.

Photon Dominated Regions (PDRs) are interfaces between the mainly ionized and mainly molecular material around young massive stars. Analysis of the physical and chemical structure of such regions traces the impact of far-ultraviolet radiation of young massive stars on their environment. We present results on the physical and chemical structure of the prototypical high UV-illumination edge-on Orion Bar PDR from an unbiased spectral line survey with a wide spectral coverage. A spectral scan from 480-1250 GHz and 1410-1910 GHz at 1.1 MHz resolution was obtained by the HIFI instrument onboard the Herschel Space Observatory. For molecules with multiple transitions we used rotational diagrams to obtain excitation temperatures and column densities. For species with a single detected transition we used an optically thin LTE approximation. In case of species with available collisional rates, we also performed a non-LTE analysis to obtain kinetic temperatures, H2 volume densities, and column densities. About 120 lines corresponding to 29 molecules (including isotopologues) have been detected in the Herschel/HIFI line survey, including 11 transitions of CO, 7 transitions of 13CO, 6 transitions of C18O, 10 transitions of H2CO, and 6 transitions of H2O. Most species trace kinetic temperatures in the range between 100 and 150 K and H2 volume densities in the range between 10^5 and 10^6 cm^-3. The species with temperatures and / or densities outside of this range include the H2CO transitions tracing a very high temperature (315 K) and density (1.4x10^6 cm^-3) component and SO corresponding to the lowest temperature (56 K) measured as a part of this line survey. We investigate the dependence of the extended X-ray emission from the halos of optically luminous early-type galaxies on the small-scale (the nearest neighbor distance) and large-scale (the average density inside the 20 nearest galaxies) environments. We cross-match the 3rd Data Release of the Second XMMNewton Serendipitous Source Catalog (2XMMi-DR3) to a volume-limited sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 with M r X /L r , shows a clear correlation with the distance to the nearest neighbor and with large-scale density environment only where the galaxies in pair interact hydrodynamically with seperations of r p vir . These findings indicate that the galaxies in the high local density region have other mechanisms that are responsible for their halo X-ray luminosities than the current presence of a close encounter, or alternatively, in the high local density region the cooling time of the heated gas halo is longer than the typical time between the subsequent encounters.

We study the distribution of cosmic voids and void galaxies using Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7). Using the VoidFinder algorithm as described by Hoyle 2002, we identify 1054 statistically significant voids in the northern galactic hemisphere with radii > 10 h^{-1} Mpc. The filling factor of voids in the sample volume is 62%. The largest void is just over 30 h^{-1} Mpc in effective radius. The median effective radius is 17 h^{-1} Mpc. The voids are found to be significantly underdense, with density contrast \delta < -0.85 at the edges of the voids. The radial density profiles of these voids are similar to predictions of dynamically distinct underdensities in gravitational theory. We find 8,046 galaxies brighter than M_r = -20.09 within the voids, accounting for 7% of the galaxies. We compare the results of VoidFinder on SDSS DR7 to mock catalogs generated from a SPH halo model simulation as well as other \Lambda -CDM simulations and find similar void fractions and void sizes in the data and simulations. The influence of a galaxy's environment on its evolution has been studied and compared extensively in the literature, although differing techniques are often used to define environment. Most methods fall into two broad groups: those that use nearest neighbours to probe the underlying density field and those that use fixed apertures. The differences between the two inhibit a clean comparison between analyses and leave open the possibility that, even with the same data, different properties are actually being measured. In this work we apply twenty published environment definitions to a common mock galaxy catalogue constrained to look like the local Universe. We find that nearest neighbour-based measures best probe the internal densities of high-mass haloes, while at low masses the inter-halo separation dominates and acts to smooth out local density variations. The resulting correlation also shows that nearest neighbour galaxy environment is largely independent of dark matter halo mass. Conversely, aperture-based methods that probe super-halo scales accurately identify high-density regions corresponding to high mass haloes. Both methods show how galaxies in dense environments tend to be redder, with the exception of the largest apertures, but these are the strongest at recovering the background dark matter environment. We also warn against using photometric redshifts to define environment in all but the densest regions. When considering environment there are two regimes: the 'local environment' internal to a halo best measured with nearest neighbour and 'large-scale environment' external to a halo best measured with apertures. This leads to the conclusion that there is no universal environment measure and the most suitable method depends on the scale being probed.

We present the Korea Institute for Advanced Study Value-Added Galaxy Catalog (KIAS VAGC), a catalog of galaxies based on the Large Scale Structure (LSS) sample of New York University Value-Added Galaxy Catalog (NYU VAGC) Data Release 7. Our catalog supplements redshifts of 10,497 galaxies with 10 ＜ rP ≤ 17.6 (1455 with 10 ＜ rP ≤ 14.5) to the NYU VAGC LSS sample. Redshifts from various existing catalogs such as the Updated Zwicky Catalog, the IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey, the Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies, and the Two Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey have been put into the NYU VAGC photometric catalog. Our supplementation significantly improves spectroscopic completeness: the area covered by the spectroscopic sample with completeness higher than 95% increases from 2.119 to 1.737 sr. Our catalog also provides morphological types of all galaxies that are determined by the automated morphology classification scheme of Park & Choi (2005), and related parameters, together with fundamental photometry parameters supplied by the NYU VAGC. Our catalog contains matches to objects in the Max Planck for Astronomy (MPA) & Johns Hopkins University (JHU) spectrum measurements (Data Release 7). This new catalog, the KIAS VAGC, is complementary to the NYU VAGC and MPA-JHU catalog.

A new catalog of isolated galaxies from The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (DR5) is presented. 1520 isolated galaxies were found in 1.4 steradians of sky. The selection criteria in this so called UNAM-KIAS catalog was implemented from a variation on the criteria developed by Karachentseva 1973 including full redshift information. Through an image processing pipeline that takes advantage from the high resolution (~ 0.4 ''/pix) and high dynamic range of the SDSS images, a uniform g band morphological classification for all these galaxies is presented. We identify 80% (SaSm) spirals (50% later than Sbc types) on one hand, and a scarce population of early-type E(6.5%) and S0(8%) galaxies amounting to 14.5% on the other hand. This magnitude-limited catalog is ~ 80% complete at 16.5, 15.6, 15.0, 14.6 and 14.4 magnitudes in the ugriz bands respectively. Some representative physical properties including SDSS magnitudes and color distributions, color-color diagrams, absolute magnitude-color, and concentration-color diagrams as a function of morphological type are presented. The UNAM-KIAS Morphological Atlas is also released along with this paper. For each galaxy of type later than Sa, a mosaic is presented that includes: (1) a g-band logarithmic image, (2) a g band filtered-enhanced image where a Gaussian kernel of various sizes was applied and (3) an RGB color image from the SDSS database. For E/S0/Sa galaxies, in addition to the images in (1), (2) and (3), plots of r band surface brightness and geometric profiles (ellipticity, Position Angle PA and A4/B4 coefficients of the Fourier series expansions of deviations of a pure ellipse) are provided..., Comment: 40 pages, 17 figures and 3 tables

We present a study on the environments of the SDSS galaxies divided into fine classes based on their morphology, colour and spectral features. The SDSS galaxies are classified into early-type and late-type; red and blue; passive, HII, Seyfert and LINER, which returns a total of 16 fine classes of galaxies. We estimate the local number density, target-excluded local luminosity density, local colour, close pair fraction and the luminosity and colour of the brightest neighbour, which are compared between the fine classes comprehensively. The morphology-colour class of galaxies strongly depends on the local density, with the approximate order of high-density preference: red early-type galaxies (REGs) -- red late-type galaxies (RLGs) -- blue early-type galaxies (BEGs) -- blue late-type galaxies (BLGs). We find that high-density environments (like cluster environments) seem to suppress AGN activity. The pair fraction of HII REGs does not show statistically significant difference from that of passive REGs, while the pair fraction of HII BLGs is smaller than that of non-HII BLGs. HII BLGs show obvious double (red + blue) peaks in the distribution of the brightest neighbour colour, while red galaxies show a single red peak. The brightest neighbours of Seyfert BLGs tend to be blue, while those of LINER BLGs tend to be red, which implies that the difference between Seyfert and LINER may be related to the pair interaction. We present a multi-wavelength study of the nature of the SDSS galaxies divided into fine classes based on their morphology, colour and spectral features. The SDSS galaxies are classified into early-type and late-type; red and blue; passive, HII, Seyfert and LINER, which returns a total of 16 fine classes of galaxies. The properties of galaxies in each fine class are investigated from radio to X-ray, using 2MASS, IRAS, FIRST, NVSS, GALEX and ROSAT data. The UV – optical – NIR colours of blue earlytype galaxies (BEGs) seem to result from the combination of old stellar population and recent star formation (SF), if there is no significant difference in their formation epoch between different spectral classes. Non-passive red early-type galaxies (REGs) have larger metallicity and younger age than passive REGs, considering their UV – optical – NIR colours, which implies that non-passive REGs have suffered recent SF adding young and metal-rich stars to them. The radio detection fraction of REGs strongly depends on their optical absolute magnitudes, while that of most late-type galaxies does not, implying the difference in their radio sources: AGN and SF. The optical – NIR colours of red late-type galaxies (RLGs) reveal that they may have considerable old stars as well as young stars. The UV – optical colours and the radio detection fraction of passive RLGs show that they have properties similar to REGs rather than non-passive RLGs. Dust extinction may not be a dominant factor making RLGs red, because RLGs are detected in the mid- and far-infrared bands less efficiently than blue late-type galaxies (BLGs). The passive BLGs have very blue UV – optical – NIR colours, implying either recent SF quenching or current SF in their outskirts. Including star formation rate, other multi-wavelength properties in each fine class are investigated, and their implication on the identity of each fine class is discussed.

Using a large sample of local galaxies (144,940) with -17.5 6. We find that the fraction of galaxies hosting an AGN(fAGN) depends strongly on morphology together with color, and very weakly on luminosity or stellar velocity dispersion of host galaxies. In particular, fAGN of early-type galaxies is almost independent of luminosity nor velocity dispersion when color is fixed. The host galaxy color preferred by AGNs is u r � 2.0 for early-type hosts and u r = 2.0 � 2.4 for late-type hosts. This trend suggests that AGNs are dominantly hosted by intermediate-mass latetype galaxies because early-type galaxies with u r � 2.0 are very rare. We also investigate how the accretion power varies with galaxy properties. While the Eddington ratio ([OIII] line luminosity normalized by black hole mass) ranges over three orders of magnitude for both morphological types, late-type galaxies are the dominant hosts over all AGN power. Among late-type galaxies, bluer color galaxies host higher power AGNs. These results are consistent with a scenario that more massive and redder galaxies are harder to host AGNs since these galaxies already consumed gas at the center or do not have sufficient gas supply to feed the black hole. In contrast, intermediate-mass, intermediatecolor, and more concentrated late-type galaxies are more likely to host AGNs, implying that perhaps some fraction of low-mass, blue, and less concentrated late-type galaxies may not host massive black holes or may host very low-power AGNs. We measure the 3D genus topology of large scale structure using Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and find it consistent with the Gaussian random phase initial conditions expected from the simplest scenarios of inflation. This studies 3D topology on the largest scales ever obtained. The topology is sponge-like. We measure topology in two volume-limited samples: a dense shallow sample studied with smoothing length of 21h^{-1}Mpc, and a sparse deep sample studied with a smoothing length of 34h^{-1}Mpc. The amplitude of the genus curve is measured with 4% uncertainty. Small distortions in the genus curve expected from non-linear biasing and gravitational effects are well explained (to about 1-\sigma accuracy) by N-body simulations using a subhalo-finding technique to locate LRGs. This suggests the formation of LRGs is a clean problem that can be modeled well without any free fitting parameters. This bodes well for using LRGs to measure the characteristic scales such as the baryon oscillation scale in future deep redshift surveys.

We inspect the coupled dependence of physical parameters of the SDSS galaxies on the small-scale (distance to and morphology of the nearest neighbor galaxy) and the large-scale (background density smoothed over 20 nearby galaxies) environments. The impacts of interaction on galaxy properties are detected at least out to the neighbor separation corresponding to the virial radius of galaxies, which is typically between 200 and 400 h^{-1}kpc for the galaxies in our sample. To detect these long-range interaction effects it is crucial to divide galaxy interactions into four cases dividing the morphology of target and neighbor galaxies into early and late types. We show that there are two characteristic neighbor-separation scales where the galaxy interactions cause abrupt changes in the properties of galaxies. The first scale is the virial radius of the nearest neighbor galaxy r_{vir,nei}. Many physical parameters start to deviate from those of extremely isolated galaxies at the projected neighbor separation r_p of about r_{vir,nei}. The second scale is at r_p \approx 0.05 r_{vir,nei} = 10--20 h^{-1} kpc, and is the scale at which the galaxies in pairs start to merge. We find that late-type neighbors enhance the star formation activity of galaxies while early-type neighbors reduce it, and that these effects occur within r_{vir,nei}. The hot halo gas and cold disk gas must be participating in the interactions at separations less than the virial radius of the galaxy plus dark halo system. Our results also show that the role of the large-scale density in determining galaxy properties is minimal once luminosity and morphology are fixed. We propose a model of allocating galaxies in cosmological N-body simulations. we identify each subhalo with a galaxy, and assign luminosity and morphological type assuming that the galaxy luminosity is a monotonic function of its host subhalo mass. The morphology assignment is made by using two simple relations between subhalo mass and galaxy luminosity of different types. One is using a constant ratio in luminosity of early (E/SO) and late (S/Irr) type galaxies at a fixed subhalo mass. And the other assumes that galaxies of different morphological types but having an equal luminosity have a constant ratio in their subhalo masses. We made a series of comparisons of the properties of these simulated galaxies with those of the SDSS galaxies. The resulting simulated galaxy sample is found to successfully reproduce the observed local number density distribution except for in high density regions. The luminosity function is studied as a function of local density. It was found that the observed luminosity functions in different local density environments are overall well-reproduced by the simulated galaxies. Discrepancy is found at the bright end of the luminosity function of early types in the underdense regions and at the faint end of both morphological types in very high density regions. A significant fraction of the observed early type galaxies in voids seems to have undergone a relatively recent star formation and became brighter. The lack of faint simulated galaxies in dense regions may be due to the strong tidal force of the central halo which destroys less massive satellite subhalos around in the simulation. The mass-to-light ratio is found to depend on the local density in the way similar to that observed in the SDSS sample. (abridged)

We studied the dependence of morphology and luminosity of the SDSS galaxies on the environmental factors. The environmental factors considered include the local density due to the nearest neighbor galaxy ρn, morphology of the nearest neighbor, and the large-scale background density. We found the local environment set up by the nearest neighbor galaxy gives strong effects on the galaxy morphology. The probability for a galaxy to have an early morphological type critically depends on whether or not ρn is above the virialization density. We conclude that the well-known morphology-density relation is basically due to the interactions between galaxy pairs. Dependence of galaxy morphology on the large-scale density is found only because there is a statistical correlation between the average pair separation and the large-scale background density. We also found that galaxy luminosity depends on ρn, and that, when the large-scale density is fixed, more isolated galaxies are more likely to be recent merger products. We propose a scenario that a series of morphology and luminosity transformation occur through a series of distant/close interactions and mergers, which results in the morphology-luminosity-local density relation.

We measure the three-dimensional topology of large-scale structure in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This allows the genus statistic to be measured with unprecedented statistical accuracy. The sample size is now sufficiently large to allow the topology to be an important tool for testing galaxy formation models. For comparison, we make mock SDSS samples using several state-of-the-art N-body simulations: the Millennium run of Springel et al. (2005)(10 billion particles), Kim & Park (2006) CDM models (1.1 billion particles), and Cen & Ostriker (2006) hydrodynamic code models (8.6 billion cell hydro mesh). Each of these simulations uses a different method for modeling galaxy formation. The SDSS data show a genus curve that is broadly characteristic of that produced by Gaussian random phase initial conditions. Thus the data strongly support the standard model of inflation where Gaussian random phase initial conditions are produced by random quantum fluctuations in the early universe. But on top of this general shape there are measurable differences produced by non-linear gravitational effects (cf. Matsubara 1994), and biasing connected with galaxy formation. The N-body simulations have been tuned to reproduce the power spectrum and multiplicity function but not topology, so topology is an acid test for these models. We present a study of the connection between star-forming galaxies, AGN host galaxies, and normal early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using the SDSS DR5 and DR4plus data, we select our early-type galaxy sample in the color versus color-gradient space, and we classify the spectral types of the selected early-type galaxies into normal, star-forming, Seyfert, and LINER classes, using several spectral line flux ratios. We investigate the slope in the fundamental space for each class of early-type galaxies and find that there are obvious differences in the slopes of the fundamental planes (FPs) among the different classes of early-type galaxies, in the sense that the slopes for Seyferts and star-forming galaxies are flatter than those for normal galaxies and LINERs. This may be the first identification of the systematic variation of the FP slope among the subclasses of early-type galaxies. The difference in the FP slope might be caused by the difference in the degree of nonhomology among different classes or by the difference of gas contents in their merging progenitors. Using simple dimensional arguments for both spiral and elliptical galaxies, we present formulas to derive an estimate of the halo spin parameter $\lambda$ for any real galaxy, in terms of common observational parameters. This allows a rough estimate of $\lambda$, which we apply to a large volume limited sample of galaxies taken from the SDSS data base. The large numbers involved (11,597) allow the derivation of reliable $\lambda$ distributions, as signal adds up significantly in spite of the errors in the inferences for particular galaxies. We find that if the observed distribution of $\lambda$ is modeled with a log-normal function, as often done for this distribution in dark matter halos that appear in cosmological simulations, we obtain parameters $\lambda_{0}=0.04 \pm 0.005$ and $\sigma_{\lambda}=0.51 \pm 0.05$, interestingly consistent with values derived from simulations. For spirals, we find a good correlation between empirical values of $\lambda$ and visually assigned Hubble types, highlighting the potential of this physical parameter as an objective classification tool.

We have found the u -r color versus g -i color gradient space can be used for highly successful morphology classification of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In this space galaxies form early and late type branches well-separated from each other. The location of galaxies along the branches reflects the degree and locality of star formation activity, and monotonically corresponds to the sequence of morphological subclasses. When the concentration index is used together, the completeness and reliability of classification reaches about 91% for a training set of SDSS galaxies brighter than r~15.9. At faintest magnitudes (r~17.5) of the SDSS spectroscopic sample, the performance still remains at about 88%. (abridged) We present a detailed reanalysis of the Chandra data for the galaxy cluster Abell 4059 and its central radio galaxy, PKS2354-35. We also present new 1.4GHz and 4.7GHz CnB-array radio data from the Very Large Array (VLA), as well as a short archival WFPC2 image from the Hubble Space Telescope. The presence of a strong interaction between this radio galaxy and the intracluster medium (ICM) was suggested by Huang & Sarazin (1998) on the basis of a short observation by the High Resolution Imager on ROSAT, and confirmed in our preliminary analysis of the Chandra/ACIS-S data. In particular, X-ray imaging clearly shows two cavities within the ICM that are approximately aligned with the radio-galaxy axis. However, using our new radio maps we fail to find a detailed correspondence between the 1 arcmin scale radio-lobes and the ICM cavities. This suggests that the cavities are ``ghosts'' of a previous burst of powerful activity by PKS 2354-35. We also examine the nature of the central asymmetric ridge (or bar) of X-ray emission extending for 30kpc south-west of the cluster center that has been noted in these previous analyzes. We find the ridge to be denser and cooler than, but probably in pressure balance with, its surroundings. The thermal evolution of this structure seems to be dominated by radiative cooling, possibly enhanced by the radio-galaxy ICM interaction. We discuss several possible models for the formation of this SW ridge and find none of them to be entirely satisfactory.

We present Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster A4059. We find strong evidence that the FR-I radio galaxy PKS 2354-35 at the center of A4059 is inflating cavities with radii ~20 kpc in the intracluster medium, similar to the situation seen in Perseus A and Hydra A. We also find evidence for interaction between the intracluster medium and PKS 2354-35 on small scales in the very center of the cluster. We investigate a large number of cosmological evolution models for QSOs and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We introduce a spectrum-luminosity correlation as a new input parameter and adopt the estimated mass function (MF) of massive black holes in centers of nearby galactic nuclei as a constraint to distinguish among different QSO/AGN models. We explore three basic types of phenomenological scenarios; (i) Models with multiple short-lived ($\sim$ a few $10^{6-8}$ yrs) populations, (ii) Models with a single long-lived ($\sim 10^9$ yr) QSO population, and (iii) Models with recurrent QSO/AGN activities which are driven by long-term variabilities of the disk instability type. In each model, we derive the expected theoretical luminosity function (LF) and the MF of black holes which grow through mass accretion. We assess the plausibility of each model based on whether each model's LF and MF are compatible with the observed data. We find that the best fits to the observed LFs are obtained in the model with multiple short-lived populations and without any significant spectral evolution. This finding suggests that the QSO populations may be composed of many short-lived generations ($\sim$ a few 10$^8$ yrs) and that there is no significant spectral evolution within each generation. On the other hand, we also show that there is no satisfactory model which can simultaneously account for the observed LF and the estimated MF. We speculate that some of the present-day black holes (BHs) found in galactic nuclei may have formed without undergoing the QSO/AGN phase.

We apply the observed optical/X-ray spectral states of the Galactic black hole candidates (GBHCs) to the cosmological QSO luminosity evolution under the assumptions that QSOs and GBHCs are powered by similar accretion processes and that their emission mechanisms are also similar. The QSO luminosity function (LF) evolution in various energy bands is strongly affected by the spectral evolution which is tightly correlated with the luminosity evolution. We generate a random sample of QSOs born nearly synchronously by allowing the QSOs to have redshifts in a narrow range around an initial high redshift, black hole masses according to a power-law, and mass accretion rates near Eddington rates. The QSOs evolve as a single long-lived population on the cosmological time scale. The pure luminosity evolution results in distinct luminosity evolution features due to the strong spectral evolution. Most notably, different energy bands (optical/UV, soft X-ray, and hard X-ray) show different evolutionary trends and the hard X-ray LF in particular shows an apparent reversal of the luminosity evolution (from decreasing to increasing luminosity) at low redshifts, which is not seen in the conventional pure luminosity evolution scenario without spectral evolution. The resulting mass function of black holes (BHs), which is qualitatively consistent with the observed QSO LF evolution, shows that QSO remnants are likely to be found as BHs with masses in the range 10**8-5x10**10 solar masses. The long-lived single population of QSOs are expected to leave their remnants as supermassive BHs residing in rare, giant elliptical galaxies.

Large-scale structure of the universe is a useful cosmological probe of the primordial non-Gaussianity and the expansion history of the universe because its topology does not change with time in the linear regime in the standard paradigm of structure formation. However, when the topology of iso-density contour surfaces is measured from an observational data, many systematic effects are introduced due to the finite size of pixels used to define the density field, non-linear gravitational evolution, redshift-space distortion, shot noise (discrete sampling), and bias in the distribution of the density field tracers. We study the various systematic effects on the genus curve to a great accuracy by using the Horizon Run 2 simulation of a {\Lambda}CDM cosmology. We numerically measure the genus curve from the gravitationally evolved matter and dark matter halo density fields. It is found that all the non-Gaussian deviations due to the systematic effects can be modeled by using a few low-order Hermite polynomials from H0 to H4. We compare our results with the analytic theories whenever possible, and find many new terms in the Hermite series that are making significant contributions to the non-Gaussian deviations. In particular, it is found that the amplitude drop of the genus curve due to the non-linear gravitational evolution can be accurately modeled by two terms H0 and H2 with coefficients both proportional to \sigma_0^2, the mean-square density fluctuation., Comment: 44 pages, 13 figures, 8 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJS

Context. The ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) of H2O is thought to be sensitive to the temperature of water formation. The OPR of H2O is thus useful for studying the formation mechanism of water. Aims: We investigate the OPR of water in the Orion PDR (photon-dominated region), at the Orion Bar and Orion S positions, using data from Herschel/HIFI. Methods: We detect the ground-state lines of ortho- and para-H218O in the Orion Bar and Orion S and estimate the column densities using local thermodynamical equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE methods. Results: Based on our calculations, the OPR in the Orion Bar is 0.1-0.5, which is unexpectedly low given the gas temperature of ~85 K, and also lower than the values measured for other interstellar clouds and protoplanetary disks. Toward Orion S, our OPR estimate is below 2. Conclusions: This low OPR at 2 positions in the Orion PDR is inconsistent with gas phase formation and with thermal evaporation from dust grains, but it may be explained by photodesorption. We report a detection of the effect of the large-scale velocity shear on the spatial distributions of the galactic satellites around the isolated hosts. Identifying the isolated galactic systems each of which consists of a single host galaxy and its satellites from the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and reconstructing linearly the velocity shear field in the local universe, we measure the alignments between the relative positions of the satellites from their isolated hosts and the principal axes of the local velocity shear tensors projected on to the plane of sky. We find a clear signal that the galactic satellites in isolated systems are located preferentially along the directions of the minor principal axes of the large-scale velocity shear field. Those galactic satellites which are spirals, brighter, located at distances larger than the projected virial radii of the hosts and belonging to the spiral hosts yield stronger alignment signals, which implies that the alignment strength depends on the formation and accretion epochs of the galactic satellites. It is also shown that the alignment strength is quite insensitive to the cosmic web environment as well as the size and luminosity of the isolated hosts. We present measurements of the genus topology of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 catalog, with unprecedented statistical significance. To estimate the uncertainties in the measured genus, we construct 81 mock SDSS LRG surveys along the past light cone from the Horizon Run 3, one of the largest N-body simulations to date that evolved 7210^3 particles in a 10815 Mpc/h size box. After carefully modeling and removing all known systematic effects due to finite pixel size, survey boundary, radial and angular selection functions, shot noise and galaxy biasing, we find the observed genus amplitude to reach 272 at 22 Mpc/h smoothing scale with an uncertainty of 4.2%; the estimated error fully incorporates cosmic variance. This is the most accurate constraint of the genus amplitude to date, which significantly improves on our previous results. In particular, the shape of the genus curve agrees very well with the mean topology of the SDSS LRG mock surveys in the LCDM universe. However, comparison with simulations also shows small deviations of the observed genus curve from the theoretical expectation for Gaussian initial conditions. While these discrepancies are mainly driven by known systematic effects such as those of shot noise and redshift-space distortions, they do contain important cosmological information on the physical effects connected with galaxy formation, gravitational evolution and primordial non-Gaussianity. We address here the key role played by systematics on the genus curve, and show how to accurately correct for their effects to recover the topology of the underlying matter. Using an extensive sample of galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5, we compare the angular momentum distribution of active galactic nucleus (AGN) with non-AGN hosting late-type galaxies. To this end we characterize galactic spin through the dimensionless angular momentum parameter $\lambda$, which we estimate approximately through simple dynamical considerations. Using a volume limited sample, we find a considerable difference when comparing the empirical distributions of $\lambda$ for AGNs and non-AGN galaxies, the AGNs showing typically low $\lambda$ values and associated dispersions, while non-AGNs present higher $\lambda$ values and a broader distribution. A more striking difference is found when looking at $\lambda$ distributions in thin $M_{r}$ cuts, while the spin of non-AGN galaxies presents an anti-correlation with $M_{r}$, with bright (massive) galaxies having low spins, AGN host galaxies present uniform values of $\lambda$ at all magnitudes, a behavior probably imposed by the fact that most late-type AGN galaxies present a narrow range in color, with a typical constant $\lambda$ value. We also find that the fraction of AGN hosting galaxies in our sample strongly depends on galactic spin, increasing dramatically for decreasing $\lambda$. For AGN host galaxies we compute the mass of their supermassive black holes and find that this value tends to be higher for low spin galaxies, even at fixed luminosity, a result that could account, to a certain extent, for the spread on the luminosity black-hole mass relation., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, published in ApJ Letters, final version

We study the environmental effects on the activity in galactic nuclei by comparing galaxies in clusters and in the field. Using a spectroscopic sample of galaxies in Abell clusters from the SDSS DR7, we investigate the dependence of nuclear activity on the physical parameters of clusters as well as the nearest neighbor galaxy. We also compare galaxy properties between AGN hosts and non-AGN galaxies. We find that the AGN fraction of early-type galaxies starts to decrease around one virial radius of clusters (r_{200,cl}) as decreasing clustercentric radius, while that of late types starts to decrease close to the cluster center (R~0.1-0.5r_{200,cl}). The AGN fractions of early-type cluster galaxies on average are found to be lower than those of early-type field galaxies by a factor ~3. However, the mean AGN fractions of late-type cluster galaxies are similar to those of late-type field galaxies. The AGN fraction of early-type BCGs lies between those of other early-type, cluster and field galaxies with similar luminosities. In the field, the AGN fraction strongly depends on the morphology of and the distance to the nearest neighbor galaxy. We find an anti-correlation between the AGN fraction and the velocity dispersion of clusters for all subsamples divided by morphology and luminosity of host galaxies. The AGN power indicated by L_[OIII]/M_BH is found to depend strongly on the mass of host galaxies rather than the clustercentric radius. The difference in physical parameters such as luminosity, (u-r) colors, SFRs, and (g-i) color gradients between AGN hosts and non-AGN galaxies is seen for both early and late types at all clustercentric radii, while the difference in structure parameters between the two is significant only for late types. These results support the idea that the nuclear activity is triggered through galaxy-galaxy interactions and mergers when gas supply for AGN is available., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures. The variety of isotopes in cosmic rays allows us to study different aspects of the processes that cosmic rays undergo between the time they are produced and the time of their arrival in the heliosphere. In this paper, we present measurements of the isotopic ratios [superscript 2]H/[superscript 4]He, [superscript 3]He/[superscript 4]He, [superscript 6]Li/[superscript 7]Li, [superscript 7]Be/([superscript 9]Be+[superscript 10]Be), and [superscript 10]B/[superscript 11]B in the range 0.2-1.4 GeV of kinetic energy per nucleon. We investigate the properties and environments of Type Ia Supernova (SN Ia) host galaxies in the Stripe 82 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-II Supernova Survey centered on the celestial equator. Host galaxies are defined as the galaxy nearest to the supernova (SN) in terms of angular distance whose velocity difference from the SN is less than 1000 km s^{-1}. Eighty seven SN Ia host galaxies are selected from the SDSS Main galaxy sample with the apparent r-band magnitude m_r < 17.77, and compared with the SDSS Main galaxies. The SN Ia rates for early and late-type galaxies are 0.81 +- 0.19 SN (100yr)^{-1} and 0.99 +- 0.21 SN (100yr)^{-1}, respectively. We find that the host galaxies have a color distribution consistent with that of the Main galaxies, regardless of their morphology. However, host galaxies are on average brighter than the Main galaxies by ~ 0.3 mag over the range of -18.3 > M_r > -21.3. But the brighter ends of their luminosity distributions are similar. The distribution of the distance to the nearest neighbor galaxy shows that SNe Ia are more likely to occur in isolated galaxies without close neighbors. We measure the topology of the main galaxy distribution using the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, examining the dependence of galaxy clustering topology on galaxy properties. Using a sample of galaxy groups found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4, we measure the following four types of alignment signals: (1) the alignment between the distributions of the satellites of each group relative to the direction of the nearest neighbor group (NNG); (2) the alignment between the major axis direction of the central galaxy of the host group (HG) and the direction of the NNG; (3) the alignment between the major axes of the central galaxies of the HG and the NNG; and (4) the alignment between the major axes of the satellites of the HG and the direction of the NNG. We find strong signal of alignment between the satellite distribution and the orientation of central galaxy relative to the direction of the NNG, even when the NNG is located beyond $3r_{\rm vir}$ of the host group. The major axis of the central galaxy of the HG is aligned with the direction of the NNG. The alignment signals are more prominent for groups that are more massive and with early type central galaxies. We also find that there is a preference for the two major axis of the central galaxies of the HG and NNG to be parallel for the system with both early central galaxies, however not for the systems with both late type central galaxies. For the orientation of satellite galaxies, we do not find any significant alignment signals relative to the direction of the NNG. From these four types of alignment measurements, we conclude that the large scale environment traced by the nearby group affects primarily the shape of the host dark matter halo, and hence also affects the distribution of satellite galaxies and the orientation of central galaxies. Context. The gas-solid budget of carbon in protoplanetary disks is related to the composition of the cores and atmospheres of the planets forming in them. The principal gas-phase carbon carriers CO, C0, and C+ can now be observed regularly in disks. Aims: The gas-phase carbon abundance in disks has thus far not been well characterized observationally. We obtain new constraints on the [C]/[H] ratio in a large sample of disks, and compile an overview of the strength of [C I] and warm CO emission. Methods: We carried out a survey of the CO 6-5 line and the [C I] 1-0 and 2-1 lines towards 37 disks with the APEX telescope, and supplemented it with [C II] data from the literature. The data are interpreted using a grid of models produced with the DALI disk code. We also investigate how well the gas-phase carbon abundance can be determined in light of parameter uncertainties. Results: The CO 6-5 line is detected in 13 out of 33 sources, [C I] 1-0 in 6 out of 12, and [C I] 2-1 in 1 out of 33. With separate deep integrations, the first unambiguous detections of the [C I] 1-0 line in disks are obtained, in TW Hya and HD 100546. Conclusions: Gas-phase carbon abundance reductions of a factor of 5-10 or more can be identified robustly based on CO and [C I] detections, assuming reasonable constraints on other parameters. The atomic carbon detection towards TW Hya confirms a factor of 100 reduction of [C]/[H]gas in that disk, while the data are consistent with an ISM-like carbon abundance for HD 100546. In addition, BP Tau, T Cha, HD 139614, HD 141569, and HD 100453 are either carbon-depleted or gas-poor disks. The low [C I] 2-1 detection rates in the survey mostly reflect insufficient sensitivity for T Tauri disks. The Herbig Ae/Be disks with CO and [C II] upper limits below the models are debris-disk-like systems. An increase in sensitivity of roughly order of magnitude compared to our survey is required to obtain useful constraints on the gas-phase [C]/[H] ratio in most of the targeted systems. We present a unified picture on the evolution of galaxy luminosity and morphology. Galaxy morphology is found to depend critically on the local environment set up by the nearest neighbor galaxy in addition to luminosity and the large scale density. When a galaxy is located farther than the virial radius from its closest neighbor, the probability for the galaxy to have an early morphological type is an increasing function only of luminosity and the local density due to the nearest neighbor ($\rho_n$). The tide produced by the nearest neighbor is thought to be responsible for the morphology transformation toward the early type at these separations. When the separation is less than the virial radius, i.e. when $\rho_n > \rho_{\rm virial}$, its morphology depends also on the neighbor's morphology and the large-scale background density over a few Mpc scales ($\rho_{20}$) in addition to luminosity and $\rho_n$. The early type probability keeps increasing as $\rho_n$ increases if its neighbor is an early type. But the probability decreases as $\rho_n$ increases when the neighbor is a late type. The cold gas streaming from the late type neighbor can be the reason for the morphology transformation toward late type. The overall early-type fraction increases as $\rho_{20}$ increases when $\rho_n > \rho_{\rm virial}$. This can be attributed to the hot halo gas of the neighbor which is confined by the pressure of the ambient medium held by the background mass. We have also found that galaxy luminosity depends on $\rho_n$, and that the isolated bright galaxies are more likely to be recent merger products. We employ a stochastic approach to probing the origin of the log-normal distributions of halo spin in N-body simulations. After analyzing spin evolution in halo merging trees, it was found that a spin change can be characterized by a stochastic random walk of angular momentum. Also, spin distributions generated by random walks are fairly consistent with those directly obtained from N-body simulations. We derived a stochastic differential equation from a widely used spin definition and measured the probability distributions of the derived angular momentum change from a massive set of halo merging trees. The roles of major merging and accretion are also statistically analyzed in evolving spin distributions. Several factors (local environment, halo mass, merging mass ratio, and redshift) are found to influence the angular momentum change. The spin distributions generated in the mean-field or void regions tend to shift slightly to a higher spin value compared with simulated spin distributions, which seems to be caused by the correlated random walks. We verified the assumption of randomness in the angular momentum change observed in the N-body simulation and detected several degrees of correlation between walks, which may provide a clue for the discrepancies between the simulated and generated spin distributions in the voids. However, the generated spin distributions in the group and cluster regions successfully match the simulated spin distribution. We also demonstrated that the log-normality of the spin distribution is a natural consequence of the stochastic differential equation of the halo spin, which is well described by the Geometric Brownian Motion model., Comment: 21 pages, 31 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJS

We investigate the dependence of physical properties of galaxies brighter than M_r=-18.0 in the SDSS on environment, as measured by local density using an adaptive smoothing kernel. We find that variations of galaxy properties with environment are almost entirely due to the dependence of morphology and luminosity on environment. Because galaxy properties depend not only on luminosity but also on morphology, it is clear that galaxy properties cannot be determined solely by dark halo mass. When morphology and luminosity are fixed, other physical properties, such as color, color-gradient, concentration, size, velocity dispersion, and star formation rate, are nearly independent of local density. The only feature is the sharp decrease of late type fraction above the critical luminosity of about M_r=-21.3 in the morphology versus luminosity relation. Weak residual dependences on environment include that of the color of late-types (bluer at lower density) and of the L-sigma relation of early-types (larger dispersion at higher density for bright galaxies). The early-type fraction is a monotonically increasing function of local density and luminosity. The morphology-density- luminosity relation should be a key constraint on galaxy formation models. We demonstrate that the dependence on environment of the morphology of galaxie originates from variations in density on effective Gaussian smoothing scales much smaller than 12 h^{-1}Mpc. We find that galaxy morphology varies both with density measured on an effective Gaussian smoothing scale of 4.7 h^{-1} Mpc and on distance to the nearest bright galaxy (particularly, for about 0.2 h^{-1}Mpc). We examine volume-limited samples from the SDSS galaxies to look for relations among internal and collective physical parameters of galaxies as faint as M_r=- 17.5, which include morphology, luminosity, color, color gradient, concentration, size, velocity dispersion, equivalent width (EW) of H_alpha line,axis ratio, the luminosity and velocity dispersion functions. At fixed morphology and luminosity, we find that bright (M_r100 km/s). We find that passive spirals are well-separated from star-forming late-types at EW (H_alpha) of about 4. An interesting finding is that many physical parameters of galaxies manifest different behaviors across the absolute magnitude of about M_* +- 1. The morphology fraction as a function of luminosity depends less sensitively on large scale structure than the luminosity function (LF) does, and thus seems to be more universal. The effects of internal extinction in late-types on the completeness of volume limited samples and on the LF and morphology fraction are found to be very important. We measure the topology of volume-limited galaxy samples selected from a parent sample of 314,050 galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS), which is now complete enough to describe the fully three-dimensional topology and its dependence on galaxy properties. We compare the observed genus statistic G\nu_f) to predictions for a Gaussian random field and to the genus measured for mock surveys constructed from new large-volume simulations of the LambdaCDM cosmology. We study the three-dimensional genus topology of large-scale structure using the northern region of the CMASS Data Release 10 (DR10) sample of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. We select galaxies with redshift 0.452 1011.56 M ☉. We study the topology at two smoothing lengths: R G = 21 h –1 Mpc and R G = 34 h –1 Mpc. The genus topology studied at the R G = 21 h –1 Mpc scale results in the highest genus amplitude observed to date. The CMASS sample yields a genus curve that is characteristic of one produced by Gaussian random phase initial conditions. The data thus support the standard model of inflation where random quantum fluctuations in the early universe produced Gaussian random phase initial conditions. Modest deviations in the observed genus from random phase are as expected from shot noise effects and the nonlinear evolution of structure. We suggest the use of a fitting formula motivated by perturbation theory to characterize the shift and asymmetries in the observed genus curve with a single parameter. We construct 54 mock SDSS CMASS surveys along the past light cone from the Horizon Run 3 (HR3) N-body simulations, where gravitationally bound dark matter subhalos are identified as the sites of galaxy formation. We study the genus topology of the HR3 mock surveys with the same geometry and sampling density as the observational sample and find the observed genus topology to be consistent with ΛCDM as simulated by the HR3 mock samples. We conclude that the topology of the large-scale structure in the SDSS CMASS sample is consistent with cosmological models having primordial Gaussian density fluctuations growing in accordance with general relativity to form galaxies in massive dark matter halos.

Large galaxy redshift surveys have long been used to constrain cosmological models and structure formation scenarios. In particular, the largest structures discovered observationally are thought to carry critical information on the amplitude of large-scale density fluctuations or homogeneity of the universe, and have often challenged the standard cosmological framework. The Sloan Great Wall (SGW) recently found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) region casts doubt on the concordance cosmological model with a cosmological constant (i.e. the flat LCDM model). Here we show that the existence of the SGW is perfectly consistent with the LCDM model, a result that only our very large cosmological N-body simulation (the Horizon Run 2, HR2) could supply. In addition, we report on the discovery of a void complex in the SDSS much larger than the SGW, and show that such size of the largest void is also predicted in the LCDM paradigm. Our results demonstrate that an initially homogeneous isotropic universe with primordial Gaussian random phase density fluctuations growing in accordance with the General Relativity, can explain the richness and size of the observed large-scale structures in the SDSS. Using the HR2 simulation we predict that a future galaxy redshift survey about four times deeper or with 3 magnitude fainter limit than the SDSS should reveal a largest structure of bright galaxies about twice as big as the SGW., 6 pages, 4 figures, Accepted to ApJL

We present an analytic model for the local bias of dark matter halos in a LCDM universe. The model uses the halo mass density instead of the halo number density and is searched for various halo mass cuts, smoothing lengths, and redshift epoches. We find that, when the logarithmic density is used, the second-order polynomial can fit the numerical relation between the halo mass distribution and the underlying matter distribution extremely well. In this model the logarithm of the dark matter density is expanded in terms of log halo mass density to the second order. The model remains excellent for all halo mass cuts (from M_{cut}=3\times10^{11}$ to $3\times10^{12}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$), smoothing scales (from $R=5h^{-1}$Mpc to $50h^{-1}$Mpc), and redshift ranges (from z=0 to 1.0) considered in this study. We investigate the dependence of occurrence of bars in galaxies on galaxy properties and environment. We use a volume-limited sample of 33,391 galaxies brighter than $M_{r}=-19.5+5$log$h$ at $0.02\le z\le0.05489$, drawn from the SDSS DR 7. We classify the galaxies into early and late types, and identify bars by visual inspection. Among 10,674 late-type galaxies with axis ratio $b/a>0.60$, we find 3,240 barred galaxies ($f_{bar}=30.4%$) which divide into 2,542 strong bars ($f_{SB1}=23.8%$) and 698 weak bars ($f_{SB2}=6.5%$). We find that $f_{SB1}$ increases as $u-r$ color becomes redder, and that it has a maximum value at intermediate velocity dispersion ($\sigma\simeq$150 km s$^{-1}$). This trend suggests that strong bars are dominantly hosted by intermediate-mass systems. Weak bars prefer bluer galaxies with lower mass and lower concentration. In the case of strong bars, their dependence on the concentration index appears only for massive galaxies with $\sigma>150$ km s$^{-1}$. We also find that $f_{bar}$ does not directly depend on the large-scale background density when other physical parameters ($u-r$ color or $\sigma$) are fixed. We discover that $f_{SB1}$ decreases as the separation to the nearest neighbor galaxy becomes smaller than 0.1 times the virial radius of the neighbor regardless of neighbor's morphology. These results imply that strong bars are likely to be destroyed during strong tidal interactions, and that the mechanism for this phenomenon is gravitational and not hydrodynamical. The fraction of weak bars has no correlation with environmental parameters. We present a new catalog of isolated galaxies (coined as UNAM–KIAS) obtained through an automated systematic search. The 1520 isolated galaxies were found in ~ 1.4 steradians of the sky in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 (SDSS DR5) photometry. The selection algorithm was implemented from a variation of the criteria developed by Karachentseva (1973), with full redshift information. This new catalog is aimed to carry out comparative studies of environmental effects and constraining the currently competing scenarios of galaxy formation and evolution.
