We present Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) 2mm continuum observations of a complete and unbiased sample of 99 870micron-selected sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ALESS). Our observations of each SMG reach average sensitivities of 53 microJy/beam. We measure the flux densities for 70 sources, for which we obtain a typical 870micron-to-2mm flux ratio of 14 +/- 5. We do not find a redshift dependence of this flux ratio, which would be expected if the dust emission properties of our SMGs were the same at all redshifts. By combining our ALMA measurements with existing Herschel/SPIRE observations, we construct a (biased) subset of 27 galaxies for which the cool dust emission is sufficiently well sampled to obtain precise constraints on their dust properties using simple isothermal models. Thanks to our new 2mm observations, the dust emissivity index is well-constrained and robust against different dust opacity assumptions. The median dust emissivity index of our SMGs is $\beta\simeq1.9\pm0.4$, consistent with the emissivity index of dust in the Milky Way and other local and high-redshift galaxies, as well as classical dust grain model predictions. We also find a negative correlation between the dust temperature and $\beta$, similar to low-redshift observational and theoretical studies. Our results indicate that $\beta\simeq2$ in high-redshift dusty star-forming galaxies, implying little evolution in dust grain properties between our SMGs and local dusty galaxy samples, and suggesting these high-mass and high-metallicity galaxies have dust reservoirs driven by grain growth in their ISM., Comment: 31 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present new gas kinematic observations with the OSIRIS instrument at the GTC for galaxies in the Cl1604 cluster system at z=0.9. These observations together with a collection of other cluster samples at different epochs analyzed by our group are used to study the evolution of the Tully-Fisher, velocity-size and stellar mass-angular momentum relations in dense environments over cosmic time. We use 2D and 3D spectroscopy to analyze the kinematics of our cluster galaxies and extract their maximum rotation velocities (Vmax). Our methods are consistently applied to all our cluster samples which make them ideal for an evolutionary comparison. Up to redshift one, our cluster samples show evolutionary trends compatible with previous observational results in the field and in accordance with semianalytical models and hydrodynamical simulations concerning the Tully-Fisher and velocity-size relations. However, we find a factor 3 drop in disk sizes and an average B-band luminosity enhancement of 2 mag by z=1.5. We discuss the role that different cluster-specific interactions may play in producing this observational result. In addition, we find that our intermediate-to-high redshift cluster galaxies follow parallel sequences with respect to the local specific angular momentum-stellar mass relation, although displaying lower angular momentum values in comparison with field samples at similar redshifts. By using data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and near-infrared (NIR) integral field spectrographs, including both Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observations in the Near Infrared and K-band Multi Object Spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope, we investigate the two-dimensional distributions of Hα and rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) continuum in six submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at z ∼ 2. At a similar spatial resolution (∼0.″5 FWHM; ∼4.5 kpc at z = 2), we find that the half-light radius of Hα is significantly larger than that of the FIR continuum in half of the sample, and on average Hα is a median factor of 2.0 ± 0.4 larger. Having explored various ways to correct for the attenuation, we find that the attenuation-corrected Hα-based star-formation rates (SFRs) are systematically lower than the infrared (IR)-based SFRs by at least a median factor of 3 ± 1, which cannot be explained by the difference in half-light radius alone. In addition, we find that in 40% of cases the total V-band attenuation (AV) derived from energy balance modeling of the full ultraviolet (UV)-to-FIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) is significantly higher than what is derived from SED modeling using only the UV-to-NIR part of the SEDs, and the discrepancy appears to increase with increasing total infrared luminosity. Finally, in considering all of our findings along with the studies in the literature, we postulate that the dust distributions in SMGs, and possibly also in less IR luminous z ∼ 2 massive star-forming galaxies, can be decomposed into the following three main components: the diffuse dust heated by older stellar populations, the more obscured and extended young star-forming H II regions, and the heavily obscured central regions that have a low filling factor but dominate the infrared luminosity in which the majority of attenuation cannot be probed via UV-to-NIR emissions.

Dusty star-forming galaxies at high redshift (1 < z < 3) represent the most intense star-forming regions in the Universe. Key aspects to these processes are the gas heating and cooling mechanisms. Although it is well known that these galaxies are gas-rich, little is known about the gas excitation conditions. Here we examine these processes in a sample of 24 strongly lensed star-forming galaxies identified by the \textit{Planck} satellite (LPs) at z ~ 1.1 - 3.5. We analyze 162 CO rotational transitions (ranging from Jupper = 1 - 12) and 37 atomic carbon fine-structure lines ([CI]) in order to characterize the physical conditions of the gas in sample of LPs. We simultaneously fit the CO and [CI] lines, and the dust continuum emission, using two different non-LTE, radiative transfer models. The first model represents a two component gas density, while the second assumes a turbulence driven log-normal gas density distribution. These LPs are among the most gas-rich, infrared (IR) luminous galaxies ever observed ($\mu_{\rm L}$L$_{\rm IR(8-1000\mu m) } \sim 10^{13-14.6} $\Lsun; $< \mu_{\rm L}$M$_{\rm ISM}> = 2.7 \pm 1.2 \times 10^{12}$ \Msun, with $\mu_{\rm L} \sim 10-30$ the average lens magnification factor). Our results suggest that the turbulent ISM present in the LPs can be well-characterized by a high turbulent velocity dispersion ($ \sim 100 $ \kms) and gas kinetic temperature to dust temperature ratios $ \sim 2.5$, sustained on scales larger than a few kpc. We speculate that the average surface density of the molecular gas mass and IR luminosity $\Sigma_{\rm M_{\rm ISM}}$ $\sim 10^{3 - 4}$ \Msun pc$^{-2}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm L_{\rm IR}}$ $\sim 10^{11 - 12}$ \Lsun kpc$^{-2}$, arise from both stellar mechanical feedback and a steady momentum injection from the accretion of intergalactic gas., Comment: 54 pages, 18 figures. With the recent discovery of a dozen dusty star-forming galaxies and around 30 quasars at z>5 that are hyper-luminous in the infrared ($��$$L_{\rm IR}>10^{13}$ L$_{\odot}$, where $��$ is a lensing magnification factor), the possibility has opened up for SPICA, the proposed ESA M5 mid-/far-infrared mission, to extend its spectroscopic studies toward the epoch of reionization and beyond. In this paper, we examine the feasibility and scientific potential of such observations with SPICA's far-infrared spectrometer SAFARI, which will probe a spectral range (35-230 $��$m) that will be unexplored by ALMA and JWST. Our simulations show that SAFARI is capable of delivering good-quality spectra for hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs) at z=5-10, allowing us to sample spectral features in the rest-frame mid-infrared and to investigate a host of key scientific issues, such as the relative importance of star formation versus AGN, the hardness of the radiation field, the level of chemical enrichment, and the properties of the molecular gas. From a broader perspective, SAFARI offers the potential to open up a new frontier in the study of the early Universe, providing access to uniquely powerful spectral features for probing first-generation objects, such as the key cooling lines of low-metallicity or metal-free forming galaxies (fine-structure and H2 lines) and emission features of solid compounds freshly synthesized by Population III supernovae. Ultimately, SAFARI's ability to explore the high-redshift Universe will be determined by the availability of sufficiently bright targets (whether intrinsically luminous or gravitationally lensed). With its launch expected around 2030, SPICA is ideally positioned to take full advantage of upcoming wide-field surveys such as LSST, SKA, Euclid, and WFIRST, which are likely to provide extraordinary targets for SAFARI., 24 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASA (SPICA special issue)

We present 0.15-arcsec (1 kpc) resolution ALMA observations of the [CII] 157.74 um line and rest-frame 160-um continuum emission in two z~3 dusty, star-forming galaxies - ALESS 49.1 and ALESS 57.1, combined with resolved CO(3-2) observations. In both sources, the [CII] surface brightness distribution is dominated by a compact core $\leq$1 kpc in radius, a factor of 2-3 smaller than the extent of the CO(3-2) emission. In ALESS 49.1, we find an additional extended (8-kpc radius), low surface-brightness [CII] component. Based on an analysis of mock ALMA observations, the [CII] and 160-um continuum surface brightness distributions are inconsistent with a single-Gaussian surface brightness distribution with the same size as the CO(3-2) emission. The [CII] rotation curves flatten at $\simeq$2 kpc radius, suggesting the kinematics of the central regions are dominated by a baryonic disc. Both galaxies exhibit a strong [CII]/FIR deficit on 1-kpc scales, with FIR-surface-brightness to [CII]/FIR slope steeper than in local star-forming galaxies. A comparison of the [CII]/CO(3-2) observations with PDR models suggests a strong FUV radiation field ($G_0\sim10^4$) and high gas density ($n\mathrm{(H)}\sim10^4-10^5$ cm$^{-3}$) in the central regions of ALESS 49.1 and 57.1. The most direct interpretation of the pronounced [CII]/FIR deficit is a thermal saturation of the C+ fine-structure levels at temperatures $\geq$500 K, driven by the strong FUV field., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We present the science case for mapping several thousand galaxy (proto)clusters at z=1-10 with a large aperture single dish sub-mm facility, producing a high-redshift counterpart to local large surveys of rich clusters like the well-studied Abell catalogue. Principal goals of a large survey of distant clusters are the evolution of galaxy clusters over cosmic time and the impact of environment on the evolution and formation of galaxies. To make a big leap forward in this emerging research field, the community would benefit from a large-format, wide-band, direct-detection spectrometer (e.g., based on MKID technology), covering a wide field of ~1 square degree and a frequency coverage from 70 to 700 GHz., Comment: Science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

High-redshift ($z$) proto-clusters will serve as testing grounds to probe the gas supply furnishing the emerging metals, stars, and large-scale structures we see at the current epoch. This work focuses on the major role large radio/millimeter (mm) single dish facilities will have in constraining the bulk, cold (T $= 10^{1-4}$K) molecular and atomic gas content. To highlight the need for large radio/mm single dishes, we calculate how the high-sensitivity of the Green Bank Telescope's (GBT) unblocked 100m aperture provides vital interferometric short-spacing coverage to support higher-resolution ngVLA observations of the cold neutral gas at the largest scales. We argue that a 'sub-millimeter SDSS' - a sensitive large-area imaging+spectroscopic survey in the sub-mm window - will revolutionize our understanding of galaxy evolution in the early Universe.

We present deep high resolution (0.03", 200pc) ALMA Band 7 observations covering the dust continuum and [CII] $\lambda157.7\mu$m emission in four $z\sim4.4-4.8$ sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) selected from the ALESS and AS2UDS surveys. The data show that the rest-frame 160$\mu$m (observed 345 GHz) dust emission is consistent with smooth morphologies on kpc scales for three of the sources. One source, UDS47.0, displays apparent substructure but this is also consistent with a smooth morphology, as indicated by simulations showing that smooth exponential disks can appear clumpy when observed at high angular resolution (0.03") and depth of these observations ($\sigma_{345\text{GHz}} \sim27-47\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$). The four SMGs are bright [CII] emitters, and we extract [CII] spectra from the high resolution data, and recover $\sim20-100$% of the [CII] flux and $\sim40-80$% of the dust continuum emission, compared to the previous lower resolution observations. When tapered to 0.2" resolution our maps recover $\sim80-100$% of the continuum emission, indicating that $\sim60$% of the emission is resolved out on $\sim200$pc scales. We find that the [CII] emission in high-redshift galaxies is more spatially extended than the rest-frame 160$\mu$m dust continuum by a factor of $1.6\pm0.4$. By considering the $L_{\text{[CII]}}$/$L_{\text{FIR}}$ ratio as a function of the star-formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{\text{SFR}}$) we revisit the [CII] deficit, and suggest that the decline in the $L_{\text{[CII]}}$/$L_{\text{FIR}}$ ratio as a function of $\Sigma_{\text{SFR}}$ is consistent with local processes. The SPICA’s large-area deep spectrophotometric surveys will provide mid-IR spectra and continuum fluxes for unbiased samples of tens of thousands of galaxies, out to redshifts of z ~ 6.

Furthermore, SPICA spectroscopy will uncover the most luminous galaxies in the first few hundred million years of the Universe, through their characteristic dust and molecular hydrogen features.

We have combined the wide-area Herschel-ATLAS far-IR survey with spectroscopic redshifts from GAMA and SDSS to define a sample of 21 low--redshift ($z_{\rm spec} < 0.5$) analogs of submm galaxies (SMGs). These have been selected because their dust temperatures and total IR luminosities are similar to those for the classical high-redshift SMG population. As well as presenting the sample, in this paper we report $^{12}$CO(2-1) and $^{12}$CO(1-0) observations of 16 low-redshift analogs of SMGs taken with the IRAM-30m telescope. We have obtained that low-redshift analogs of SMGs represent a very diverse population, similar to what has been found for high-redshift SMGs. A large variety in the molecular gas excitation or $^{12}$CO(2-1)/$^{12}$CO(1-0) line ratio is seen, meaning that extrapolations from $J \geq 2$ CO lines can result in very uncertain molecular gas mass determinations. Our sources with $^{12}$CO(1-0) detections follow the dust--gas correlation found in previous work at different redshifts and luminosities. The molecular gas mass of low-redshift SMGs has an average value of $M_{\rm H_2} \sim 1.6 \times 10^{10}\,M_\odot$ and will be consumed in $\sim 100 \, {\rm Myr}$ . We also find a wide range of molecular gas fractions, with the highest values being compatible with those found in high-redshift SMGs with $^{12}$CO(1-0) detections, which are only the most luminous. Low-redshift SMGs offer a unique opportunity to study the properties of extreme star formation in a detail not possible at higher redshifts., Submitted to ApJ. Comments welcome

We present single-dish CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) observations for 14 low-redshift quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). In combination with optical integral field spectroscopy we study how the cold gas content relates to the star formation rate (SFR) and black hole accretion rate. CO(1-0) is detected in 8 of 14 targets and CO(2-1) is detected in 7 out of 11 cases. The majority of disc-dominated QSOs reveal gas fractions and depletion times well matching normal star forming systems. Two gas-rich major mergers show clear starburst signatures with higher than average gas fractions and shorter depletion times. Bulge-dominated QSO hosts are mainly undetected in CO(1-0) which corresponds, on average, to lower gas fractions than in disc-dominated counterparts. Their SFRs however imply shorter than average depletion times and higher star formation efficiencies. Negative QSO feedback through removal of cold gas seems to play a negligible role in our sample. We find a trend between black hole accretion rate and total molecular gas content for disc-dominated QSOs when combined with literature samples. We interpret this as an upper envelope for nuclear activity which is well represented by a scaling relation between the total and circum-nuclear gas reservoir accessible for accretion. Bulge-dominated QSOs significantly differ from that scaling relation and appear uncorrelated with the total molecular gas content. This could be explained either by a more compact gas reservoir, blow out of the gas envelope through outflows, or a different ISM phase composition., 17 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a sample of 80 candidate strongly lensed galaxies with flux density above 100 mJy at 500 μm extracted from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey, over an area of 600 deg2. Available imaging and spectroscopic data allow us to confirm the strong lensing in 20 cases and to reject it in one case. For other eight objects, the lensing scenario is strongly supported by the presence of two sources along the same line of sight with distinct photometric redshifts. The remaining objects await more follow-up observations to confirm their nature. The lenses and the background sources have median redshifts zL = 0.6 and zS = 2.5, respectively, and are observed out to zL = 1.2 and zS = 4.2. International audience; We present millimetre dust emission measurements of two Lyman‐break galaxies at z similar to 3 and construct for the first time fully sampled infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs), from mid‐IR to the Rayleigh‐Jeans tail, of individually detected, unlensed, UV‐selected, main sequence (MS) galaxies at z = 3. The SED modelling of the two sources confirms previous findings, based on stacked ensembles, of an increasing mean radiation field < U > with redshift, consistent with a rapidly decreasing gas metallicity in z > 2 galaxies. Complementing our study with CO[J = 3 ‐> 2] emission line observations, we have measured the molecular gas mass reservoir (MH2) of the systems using three independent approaches: 1) CO line observations; 2) the dust to gas mass ratio vs. metallicity relation; and 3) a single band, dust emission flux on the Rayleigh‐Jeans side of the SED. All techniques return consistent MH2 estimates within a factor of two or less, yielding gas depletion time‐scales (tau(dep) approximate to 0.35 Gyr) and gas‐to‐stellar mass ratios (M‐H2/M‐* approximate to 0 .5‐1) for our z similar to 3 massive MS galaxies. The overall properties of our galaxies are consistent with trends and relations established at lower redshifts, extending the apparent uniformity of star‐forming galaxies over the last 11.5 billion years.

In these proceedings we highlight the primary scientific goals and design of the WEAVE-LOFAR survey, which will use the new WEAVE spectrograph on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope to provide the primary source of spectroscopic information for the LOFAR Surveys Key Science Project. Beginning in 2018, WEAVE-LOFAR will generate more than 10$^6$ R=5000 365-960 nm spectra of low-frequency selected radio sources, across three tiers designed to efficiently sample the redshift-luminosity plane, and produce a data set of enormous legacy value. The radio frequency selection, combined with the high multiplex and throughput of the WEAVE spectrograph, make obtaining redshifts in this way very efficient, and we expect that the redshift success rate will approach 100 per cent at $z < 1$. This unprecedented spectroscopic sample - which will be complemented by an integral field component - will be transformational in key areas, including studying the star formation history of the Universe, the role of accretion and AGN-driven feedback, properties of the epoch of reionisation, cosmology, cluster haloes and relics, as well as the nature of radio galaxies and protoclusters. We discuss low resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of an unbiased sample of 24 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), selected from samples previously observed in the mid-infrared with ISO. Qualitatively, the NIR spectra of our 24 ULIRGs resemble those of starbursts. The spectroscopic classification in the NIR is in very good agreement with the MIR. For a subset of our sample for which extinction corrections can be derived from Pace and Br gamma, we find rather high Pa alpha luminosities, in accordance with the powering source of these galaxies being star formation. Furthermore, we identified two unusual objects, the first exhibiting extreme [FeII] emission and the second strong emission in H-2 rotation-vibration emission.

Infrared bright galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) represent the bulk of the cosmic infrared background and play a major role in the cosmic star formation and accretion histories. For this reason they have been subject of intensive studies at all wavelengths. However, being very dusty galaxies, one of the key wavelength range to understand their evolutionary stages and the physic involved, is the Mid-Far-Infrared and sub-millimeter window. Previous (IRAS and ISO) and current (SPITZER) infrared missions, already shed light on the nature and the evolution of these galaxies, but still many phenomena lack of a complete understanding. For example, the processes triggering the starburst and AGN activities as well as trends with the interaction stage, are not well established yet, partially because at FIR wavelengths it has not been possible so far to spatially resolve these different components even in nearby objects. With its passively cooled 3.5 meter telescope, HERSCHEL will offer this opportunity for the first time. In particular, the PACS instrument, is unique for tackling some important open issues thanks to its spectro imaging capability at FIR wavelengths. We will illustrate some of these exciting new opportunities using examples from the Guaranteed Time program on infrared bright galaxies, that is currently being developed. ISO has undoubtedly shown that the use of Mid-Far-infrared spectroscopy is a powerful tool for establishing the physical conditions of the ISM and separating the starburst and AGN activity contributions which often coexist in (U)LIRGs. However, such a coexistence makes the central regions of (U)LIRG very peculiar such that we expect the ISM in their central regions to be very different than in normal star-forming galaxies. One known example is the fact that ultra luminous infrared galaxies have less [CII] emission w.r.t. the total FIR emission ([CII] deficiency) than what is found in normal galaxies. This result, found in several studies based on ISO spectroscopy, points towards a different heating/cooling balance of the ISM in infrared bright galaxies, but the causes and the related physic remain unknown. With PACS it will be possible to take full resolution complete PACS scans of representative nearby sources such that we can probe the ISM physics in central starbursts, the circum-nuclear molecular rings, disks and winds, separately. Moreover, a survey of the most important FIR structure lines will become feasable for large samples spanning from starburst, AGNs and obscured objects, at local and intermediate redshift. Observations with the PACS photometric camera in its three bands (70,110 and 170 μm) will complement the science possible with the integral field spectroscopy, because HERSCHEL will be able to resolve for the first time individual dust enshrouded activity knots, i.e. the place where star formation is triggered, to locate the starburst regions and their relative contributions in interacting systems. Due to the unprecedent spatial resolution HERSCHEL provides at FIR and sub-millimeter wavelengths and the improved sensitivities of its instruments, we expect that a significant part of HERSCHEL observing time will be spent on the study of high redshift galaxies. Detailed studies of nearby templates, as illustrated here, will significantly contribute in understanding in detail the physics governing the diagnostic diagrams and the change in spectral characteristics which are the basic tools for studying unresolved galaxies at high redshift. © 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH and Co. We present a sample of 80 candidate strongly lensed galaxies with flux density above 100mJy at 500��m extracted from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS), over an area of 600 square degrees. Available imaging and spectroscopic data allow us to confirm the strong lensing in 20 cases and to reject it in one case. For other 8 objects the lensing scenario is strongly supported by the presence of two sources along the same line of sight with distinct photometric redshifts. The remaining objects await more follow-up observations to confirm their nature. The lenses and the background sources have median redshifts z_L = 0.6 and z_S = 2.5, respectively, and are observed out to z_L = 1.2 and z_S = 4.2. We measure the number counts of candidate lensed galaxies at 500��m and compare them with theoretical predictions, finding a good agreement for a maximum magnification of the background sources in the range 10-20. These values are consistent with the magnification factors derived from the lens modelling of individual systems. The catalogue presented here provides sub- mm bright targets for follow-up observations aimed at exploiting gravitational lensing to study with un-precedented details the morphological and dynamical properties of dusty star forming regions in z >~ 1.5 galaxies., 25 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) 850um continuum observations of the original Lyman-alpha Blob (LAB) in the SSA22 field at z=3.1 (SSA22-LAB01). The ALMA map resolves the previously identified submillimeter source into three components with total flux density S_850 = 1.68+/-0.06 mJy, corresponding to a star formation rate of ~150 M_sun/yr. The submillimeter sources are associated with several faint (m~27 mag) rest-frame ultraviolet sources identified in Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) clear filter imaging (~5850A). One of these companions is spectroscopically confirmed with Keck MOSFIRE to lie within 20 projected kpc and 250 km/s of one of the ALMA components. We postulate that some of these STIS sources represent a population of low-mass star-forming satellites surrounding the central submillimeter sources, potentially contributing to their growth and activity through accretion. Using a high resolution cosmological zoom simulation of a 10^13 M_sun halo at z=3, including stellar, dust and Ly-alpha radiative transfer, we can model the ALMA+STIS observations and demonstrate that Ly-alpha photons escaping from the central submillimeter sources are expected to resonantly scatter in neutral hydrogen, the majority of which is predicted to be associated with halo substructure. We show how this process gives rise to extended Ly-alpha emission with similar surface brightness and morphology to observed giant LABs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Strong gravitational lenses are now being routinely discovered in wide-field surveys at (sub-)millimeter wavelengths. We present Submillimeter Array (SMA) high-spatial resolution imaging and Gemini-South and Multiple Mirror Telescope optical spectroscopy of strong lens candidates discovered in the two widest extragalactic surveys conducted by the Herschel Space Observatory: the Herschel-Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) and the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES). From a sample of 30 Herschel sources with S 500 > 100 mJy, 21 are strongly lensed (i.e., multiply imaged), 4 are moderately lensed (i.e., singly imaged), and the remainder require additional data to determine their lensing status. We apply a visibility-plane lens modeling technique to the SMA data to recover information about the masses of the lenses as well as the intrinsic (i.e., unlensed) sizes (r half) and far-infrared luminosities (L FIR) of the lensed submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). The sample of lenses comprises primarily isolated massive galaxies, but includes some groups and clusters as well. Several of the lenses are located at z lens > 0.7, a redshift regime that is inaccessible to lens searches based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy. The lensed SMGs are amplified by factors that are significantly below statistical model predictions given the 500 μm flux densities of our sample. We speculate that this may reflect a deficiency in our understanding of the intrinsic sizes and luminosities of the brightest SMGs. The lensed SMGs span nearly one decade in L FIR (median L FIR = 7.9 × 10 12 L ) and two decades in FIR luminosity surface density (median ΣFIR = 6.0 × 1011 L kpc-2). The strong lenses in this sample and others identified via (sub-)mm surveys will provide a wealth of information regarding the astrophysics of galaxy formation and evolution over a wide range in redshift. © 2013. We report on deep near-infrared observations obtained with the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of the first five confirmed gravitational lensing events discovered by the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS). We succeed in disentangling the background galaxy from the lens to gain separate photometry of the two components. The HST data allow us to significantly improve on previous constraints of the mass in stars of the lensed galaxy and to perform accurate lens modelling of these systems, as described in the accompanying paper by Dye et al. We fit the spectral energy distributions of the background sources from near-IR to millimetre wavelengths and use the magnification factors estimated by Dye et al. to derive the intrinsic properties of the lensed galaxies. We find these galaxies to have star-formation rates of approximately 400 to 2000 M_sol/yr, with approximately (6-25)x10^10 M_sol of their baryonic mass already turned into stars. At these rates of star formation, all remaining molecular gas will be exhausted in less than 100 Myr, reaching a final mass in stars of a few 10^11 M_sol. These galaxies are thus proto-ellipticals caught during their major episode of star formation, and observed at the peak epoch z=1.5-3 of the cosmic star formation history of the Universe., 14 pages, submitted to MNRAS

We present Herschel far-infrared (FIR) photometry of eleven quasars at redshift z>5 that have previously been detected at 1.2mm. We perform full spectral energy distribution (SED) fits over the wavelength range lambda_rest ~0.1-400mu for those objects with good Herschel detections. These fits reveal the need for an additional far-infrared (FIR) component besides the emission from a dusty AGN-powered torus. This additional FIR component has temperatures of T_FIR ~ 40-60K with luminosities of L_(8-1000mu) ~ 10^13 L_sun (accounting for 25-60% of the bolometric FIR luminosity). If the FIR dust emission is due to star formation it would suggest star formation rates in excess of 1000 solar masses per year. We show that at long wavelengths (lambda_rest > 50mu) the contribution of the AGN-powered torus emission is negligible. This explains how previous FIR studies of high-redshift quasars that relied on single component fits to (ground-based) observations at lambda_obs > 350mu reached T_FIR and L_FIR values similar to our complete SED fits. Stacking the Herschel data of four individually undetected sources reveals a significant average signal in the PACS bands but not in SPIRE. The average SED of sources with individual Herschel detections shows a striking surplus in near- and mid-infrared emission when compared to common AGN templates. The comparison between two average SEDs (sources with and without individual Herschel detections) matched in the UV/optical indicates that for these objects the strength of the MIR emission may correlate with the strength of the FIR emission., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

International audience; Context. Dust attenuation curves in external galaxies are useful for studying their dust properties as well as interpreting their intrinsic spectral energy distributions. These functions are not very well known in the UV range whether at low or high redshift. In particular, the presence or absence of a UV bump at 2175 angstrom remains an open issue that has consequences on the interpretation of broad band colours of galaxies involving the UV range. Aims. We want to study the dust attenuation curve in the UV range at z \textgreater 1 where the UV is redshifted into the visible and with Herschel data to constrain dust emission and a global dust attenuation. In particular, we search for a UV bump and related implications for dust attenuation determinations. Methods. We use deep photometric data of the Chandra Deep Field South obtained with intermediate and broad band filters by the MUSYC project to sample the UV rest frame of galaxies with 1 \textless z \textless 2. Herschel/PACS and Spitzer/MIPS data are used to measure the dust emission. We select 30 galaxies with high S/N in all bands. Their SEDs from the UV to the far-IR are fitted using the CIGALE code and the characteristics of the dust attenuation curves obtained as Bayesian outputs of the SED fitting process. Results. The mean dust attenuation curve we derive exhibits a significant UV bump at 2175 angstrom whose amplitude corresponds to 35% (76%) that of the Milky Way (Large Magellanic Cloud: LMC2 supershell) extinction curve. An analytical expression of the average attenuation curve (A(gimel)/A(V)) is given and found to be slightly steeper than the Calzetti et al. one, although at a 1 sigma level. Our galaxy sample is used to study the derivation of the slopes of the UV continuum from broad band colours, including the rest frame GALEX FUV - NUV colour. Systematic errors induced by the presence of the bump are quantified. We compare dust attenuation factors measured with CIGALE to the slope of the UV continuum and find that there is a large scatter around the relation valid for local starbursts (similar to 0.7 mag). The uncertainties on the determination of the UV slope lead to an extra systematic error in a range of 0.3 to 0.7 mag on dust attenuation when a filter overlaps the UV bump.

We present radio and infrared (3.6-24um) counterparts to submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) detected in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South with the LABOCA 870-um bolometer camera on the 12-m Atacama Pathfinder Experiment. Using the Very Large Array at 1.4GHz and Spitzer we have identified secure counterparts to 79 of the 126 SMGs (SNR>3.7, S_870>4.4mJy) in the field, 62 via their radio and/or 24-um emission, the remainder using a colour-flux cut on IRAC 3.6- and 5.8-um sources chosen to maximise the number of secure, coincident radio and 24-um counterparts. In constructing our radio catalogue, we have corrected for the effects of `flux boosting', then used the corrected flux densities to estimate the redshifts of the SMGs based on the radio/submm spectral indices. Dust attenuation curves in external galaxies are useful to study their dust properties as well as to interpret their intrinsic spectral energy distributions. In particular the presence or absence of a UV bump at 2175 A remains an open issue which has consequences on the interpretation of broad band colours of distant galaxies. We study the dust attenuation curve in the UV range at z >1. In particular we search for the presence of a UV bump. However, the identification of gravitational lenses is often time-intensive, involving the sifting of large volumes of imaging or spectroscopic data to find few candidates. We used early data from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey to demonstrate that wide-area submillimeter surveys can simply and easily detect strong gravitational lensing events, with close to 100% efficiency.

We have detected the CO(2–1) transition from the submillimetre galaxy (SMG) LESS J033229.4−275619 at z= 4.755 using the new Compact Array Broadband Backend system on the Australian Telescope Compact Array. These data have identified a massive gas reservoir available for star formation for the first time in an SMG at z~ 5. We present a high-resolution (down to 0."18), multi-transition imaging study of the molecular gas in the z = 4.05 submillimeter galaxy GN20. GN20 is one of the most luminous starburst galaxy known at z>4, and is a member of a rich proto-cluster of galaxies at z = 4.05 in GOODS-North. We have observed the CO 1-0 and 2-1 emission with the Very Large Array (VLA), the CO 6-5 emission with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, and the 5-4 emission with Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy. The H_2 mass derived from the CO 1-0 emission is 1.3 × 10^(11)(α/0.8) M_☉. High-resolution imaging of CO 2-1 shows emission distributed over a large area, appearing as partial ring, or disk, of ~10 kpc diameter. The integrated CO excitation is higher than found in the inner disk of the Milky Way, but lower than that seen in high-redshift quasar host galaxies and low-redshift starburst nuclei. The CO 4-3 integrated line strength is more than a factor of 2 lower than expected for thermal excitation. The excitation can be modeled with two gas components: a diffuse, lower excitation component with a radius ~4.5 kpc and a filling factor ~0.5, and a more compact, higher excitation component (radius ~2.5 kpc, filling factor ~0.13). The lower excitation component contains at least half the molecular gas mass of the system, depending on the relative conversion factor. The VLA CO 2-1 image at 0"2 resolution shows resolved, clumpy structure, with a few brighter clumps with intrinsic sizes ~2 kpc. The velocity field determined from the CO 6-5 emission is consistent with a rotating disk with a rotation velocity of ~570 km s^(–1) (using an inclination angle of 45°), from which we derive a dynamical mass of 3 × 10^(11) M_☉ within about 4 kpc radius. The star formation distribution, as derived from imaging of the radio synchrotron and dust continuum, is on a similar scale as the molecular gas distribution. The molecular gas and star formation are offset by ~1" from the Hubble Space Telescope I-band emission, implying that the regions of most intense star formation are highly dust obscured on a scale of ~10 kpc. The large spatial extent and ordered rotation of this object suggests that this is not a major merger, but rather a clumpy disk accreting gas rapidly in minor mergers or smoothly from the proto-intracluster medium. Qualitatively, the kinematic and structural properties of GN20 compare well to the most rapid star formers fed primarily by cold accretion in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. Conversely, if GN20 is a major, gas-rich merger, then some process has managed to ensure that the star formation and molecular gas distribution has not been focused into one or two compact regions.

We study the dust properties of galaxies in the redshift range 0.10.5 with L_IR>5x10^{10} L_\odot, appears to be 2-5 K colder than that of AKARI-selected local galaxies with similar luminosities; and the dispersion in T_dust for high-z galaxies increases with L_IR due to the existence of cold galaxies that are not seen among local galaxies. We show that this large dispersion of the L_IR-T_dust relation can bridge the gap between local star-forming galaxies and high-z submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). We present Herschel far-infrared (FIR) observations of two sub-mm bright quasars at high redshift: SDSS J1148+5251 (z=6.42) and BR 1202-0725 (z=4.69) obtained with the PACS instrument. Both objects are detected in the PACS photometric bands. The Herschel measurements provide additional data points that constrain the FIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of both sources, and they emphasise a broad range of dust temperatures in these objects. For lambda_rest ~< 20mu, the two SEDs are very similar to the average SEDs of quasars at low redshift. In the FIR, however, both quasars show excess emission compared to low-z QSO templates, most likely from cold dust powered by vigorous star formation in the QSO host galaxies. For SDSS J1148+5251 we detect another object at 160mu with a distance of ~10 arcseconds from the QSO. Although no physical connection between the quasar and this object can be shown with the available data, it could potentially confuse low-resolution measurements, thus resulting in an overestimate of the FIR luminosity of the z=6.42 quasar., 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the A&A special issue on Herschel

We discuss identifications for 18 sources from our MAMBO 1.2mm survey of the region surrounding the NTT Deep Field. We have obtained accurate positions from Very Large Array 1.4GHz interferometry and in a few cases IRAM mm interferometry, and have also made deep BVRIzJK imaging at ESO. We find thirteen 1.2mm sources associated with optical/near-infrared objects in the magnitude range K=19.0 to 22.5, while five are blank fields at K>22. The median redshift of the radio-identified mm sources is ~2.6 from the radio/mm estimator, and the median optical/near-infrared photometric redshifts for the objects with counterparts ~2.1. This suggests that those radio-identified mm sources without optical/near-infrared counterparts tend to lie at higher redshifts than those with optical/near-infrared counterparts. Compared to published identifications of objects from 850micron surveys of similar depth, the median K and I magnitudes of our counterparts are roughly two magnitudes fainter and the dispersion of I-K colors is less. Real differences in the median redshifts, residual mis-identifications with bright objects, cosmic variance, and small number statistics are likely to contribute to this significant difference, which also affects redshift measurement strategies. We discuss basic properties of the near-infrared/(sub)mm/radio spectral energy distributions of our galaxies and of interferometrically identified submm sources from the literature. From a comparison with submm objects with CO-confirmed spectroscopic redshifts we argue that roughly two thirds of the (sub)mm galaxies are at z>~2.5. We have used the IRAM Plateau de Bure mm interferometer to locate with subarcsecond accuracy the dust emission of three of the brightest 1.2mm sources in the NTT Deep Field (NDF) selected from our 1.2mm MAMBO survey at the IRAM 30m telescope. We combine these results with deep B to K imaging and VLA interferometry. Strikingly, none of the three accurately located mm galaxies MMJ120546-0741.5, MMJ120539-0745.4, and MMJ120517-0743.1 has a K-band counterpart down to the faint limit of K>21.9. This implies that these three galaxies are either extremely obscured and/or are at very high redshifts (z>~4). We combine our results with literature data for 11 more (sub)mm galaxies that are identified with similar reliability. In terms of their K-band properties, the sample divides into three roughly equal groups: (i) undetected to K~22, (ii) detected in the near-infrared but not the optical and (iii) detected in the optical with the possibility of optical follow-up spectroscopy. We find a trend in this sample between near-infrared to submm and submm to radio spectral indices, which in comparison to spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of low redshift infrared luminous galaxies suggests that the most plausible primary factor causing the extreme near-infrared faintness of our objects is their high redshift. We show that the near-infrared to radio SEDs of the sample are inconsistent with SEDs that resemble local far-infrared cool galaxies with moderate luminosities, which were proposed in some models of the submm sky. We use ALMA and JVLA observations of the galaxy cluster Cl J1449+0856 at z=1.99, in order to study how dust-obscured star-formation, ISM content and AGN activity are linked to environment and galaxy interactions during the crucial phase of high-z cluster assembly. We present detections of multiple transitions of $^{12}$CO, as well as dust continuum emission detections from 11 galaxies in the core of Cl J1449+0856. We measure the gas excitation properties, star-formation rates, gas consumption timescales and gas-to-stellar mass ratios for the galaxies. We find evidence for a large fraction of galaxies with highly-excited molecular gas, contributing $>$50% to the total SFR in the cluster core. We compare these results with expectations for field galaxies, and conclude that environmental influences have strongly enhanced the fraction of excited galaxies in this cluster. We find a dearth of molecular gas in the galaxies' gas reservoirs, implying a high star-formation efficiency (SFE) in the cluster core, and find short gas depletion timescales $��$, 29 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables + Appendix. We use deep observations taken with the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS), on board the Herschel satellite as part of the PACS evolutionary probe (PEP) guaranteed project along with submm ground-based observations to measure the dust mass of a sample of high-z submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). We investigate their dust content relative to their stellar and gas masses, and compare them with local star-forming galaxies. High-z SMGs are dust rich, i.e. they have higher dust-to-stellar mass ratios compared to local spiral galaxies (by a factor of 30) and also compared to local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, by a factor of 6). This indicates that the large masses of gas typically hosted in SMGs have already been highly enriched with metals and dust. Indeed, for those SMGs whose gas mass is measured, we infer dust-to-gas ratios similar or higher than local spirals and ULIRGs. However, similarly to other strongly star-forming galaxies in the local Universe and at high-z, SMGs are characterized by gas metalicities lower (by a factor of a few) than local spirals, as inferred from their optical nebular lines, which are generally ascribed to infall of metal-poor gas. This is in contrast with the large dust content inferred from the far-IR and submm data. In short, the metalicity inferred from the dust mass is much higher (by more than an order of magnitude) than that inferred from the optical nebular lines.
