We have obtained new observations of the absorption system at $z_\mathrm{abs}=0.48$ toward QSO Q0454-220, which we use to constrain its chemical and physical conditions. The system features metal-enriched gas and previously unknown low-metallicity gas detected $\sim 200 \, \mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ blueward of the metal-enriched gas. The low-metallicity gas is detected in multiple Lyman series lines but is not detected in any metal lines. Our analysis includes low-ionization (e.g., Fe II, Mg II) metal lines, high-ionization (e.g., C IV, O VI, N V) metal lines, and several Lyman series lines. We use new UV spectra taken with HST/COS along with data taken from HST/STIS, Keck/HIRES, and VLT/UVES. We find that the absorption system can be explained with a photoionized low-ionization phase with $\mathrm{[Fe/H]} \sim -0.5$ and $n_\mathrm{H} \sim 10^{-2.3} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, a photoionized high-ionization phase with a conservative lower limit of $-3.3 < \mathrm{[Fe/H]}$ and $n_\mathrm{H} \sim 10^{-3.8} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, and a low-metallicity component with a conservative upper limit of $\mathrm{[Fe/H]} < -2.5$ that may be photoionized or collisionally ionized. We suggest that the low-ionization phase may be due to cold-flow accretion via large-scale filamentary structure or due to recycled accretion while the high-ionization phase is the result of ancient outflowing material from a nearby galaxy. The low-metallicity component may come from pristine accretion. Identifying the mechanisms driving the escape of Lyman Continuum (LyC) photons is crucial to find Lyman Continuum Emitter (LCE) candidates. To understand the physical properties involved in the leakage of LyC photons, we investigate the connection between the HI covering fraction, HI velocity width, the Lyman alpha (LyA) properties and escape of LyC photons in a sample of 22 star-forming galaxies including 13 LCEs. We fit the stellar continua, dust attenuation, and absorption lines between 920 and 1300 A to extract the HI covering fractions and dust attenuation. Additionally, we measure the HI velocity widths of the optically thick Lyman series and derive the LyA equivalent widths (EW), escape fractions (fesc), peak velocities and fluxes at the minimum of the LyA profiles. Overall, we highlight strong correlations between the presence of low HI covering fractions and (1) low LyA peak velocities; (2) more flux at the profile minimum; and (3) larger EW(LyA), fesc(LyA), and fesc(LyC). Hence, low column density channels are crucial ISM ingredients for the leakage of LyC and LyA photons. Additionally, galaxies with narrower HI absorption velocity widths have higher LyA equivalent widths, larger LyA escape fractions, and lower LyA peak velocity separations. This suggests that these galaxies have low HI column density. Finally, we find that dust regulates the amount of LyA and LyC radiation that actually escapes the ISM. Overall, the ISM porosity is one origin of strong LyA emission and enables the escape of ionizing photons in low-z leakers. However, this is not enough to explain the largest fesc(LyC) observed, which indicates that the most extreme LCEs are likely density-bounded along all lines of sight to the observer. We present a systematic investigation of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) within projected distances d1e11 M_sun. Combining far-ultraviolet Cosmic Origin Spectrograph spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope and optical echelle spectra from the ground enables a detailed ionization analysis based on resolved component structures of a suite of absorption transitions, including the full HI Lyman series and various ionic metal transitions. By comparing the relative abundances of different ions in individually-matched components, we show that cool gas (T~1e4 K) density and metallicity can vary by more than a factor of ten in in an LRG halo. We reveal multiple components of an interacting galaxy system at $z\approx3.35$ through a detailed analysis of the exquisite high-resolution Keck/HIRES spectrum of the afterglow of a gamma-ray burst (GRB). Through Voigt-profile fitting of absorption lines from the Lyman-series, we constrain the neutral hydrogen column density to $N_{\mathrm{HI}} \leq 10^{18.35}$ cm$^{-2}$ for the densest of four distinct systems at the host redshift of GRB~080810, among the lowest $N_{\mathrm{HI}}$ ever observed in a GRB host, despite the line of sight passing within a projected 5 kpc of the galaxy centres. By detailed analysis of the corresponding metal absorption lines, we derive chemical, ionic and kinematic properties of the individual absorbing systems, and thus build a picture of the host as a whole. Striking differences between the systems imply that the line of sight passes through several phases of gas: the star-forming regions of the GRB host; enriched material in the form of a galactic outflow; the hot and ionised halo of a second, interacting galaxy falling towards the host at a line-of-sight velocity of 700 km s$^{-1}$; and a cool, metal-poor cloud which may represent one of the best candidates yet for the inflow of metal-poor gas from the intergalactic medium., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures. Gaseous and dust debris disks around white dwarfs (WDs) are formed from tidally disrupted planetary bodies. This offers an opportunity to determine the composition of exoplanetary material by measuring element abundances in the accreting WD's atmosphere. A more direct way to do this is through spectral analysis of the disks themselves. Currently, the number of chemical elements detected through disk emission-lines is smaller than that of species detected through lines in the WD atmospheres. We assess the far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum of one well-studied object (SDSS J122859.93+104032.9) to search for disk signatures at wavelengths, 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Dissociative excitation of thymine following electron impact was studied in the energy range up to 430 eV. Emissions in the vacuum ultra-violet spectral region below 150 nm were studied and found to be dominated by the hydrogen Lyman series. Emission cross section data reveal that Lyman-α excitation displays a broad maximum at an electron impact energy of 160 eV. The probability of extracting other excited atoms from the parent molecule is found to be insignificant. Possible excitation and dissociation mechanisms in the parent molecule are discussed.

We report on the detection of Lyman continuum radiation in two nearby starburst galaxies. Tol 0440-381, Tol 1247-232 and Mrk 54 were observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescopes. The three galaxies have radial velocities of ~13,000 km/s, permitting a ~35 A window on the restframe Lyman continuum shortward of the Milky Way Lyman edge at 912 A. The chosen instrument configuration using the G140L grating covers the spectral range from 912 to 2,000 {\AA}. We developed a dedicated background subtraction method to account for temporal and spatial background variations of the detector, which is crucial at the low flux levels around 912 A. This modified pipeline allowed us to significantly improve the statistical and systematic detector noise and will be made available to the community. We detect Lyman continuum in all three galaxies. However, we conservatively interpret the emission in Tol 0440-381 as an upper limit due to possible contamination by geocoronal Lyman series lines. We determined the current star-formation properties from the far-ultraviolet continuum and spectral lines and used synthesis models to predict the Lyman continuum radiation emitted by the current population of hot stars. We discuss the various model uncertainties such as, among others, atmospheres and evolution models. Lyman continuum escape fractions were derived from a comparison between the observed and predicted Lyman continuum fluxes. By revisiting the Suzaku and XMM-Newton data of the North Polar Spur, we discovered that the spectra are inconsistent with the traditional model consisting of pure thermal emission and neutral absorption. The most prominent discrepancies are the enhanced O VII and Ne IX forbidden-to-resonance ratios, and a high O VIII Ly$\beta$ line relative to other Lyman series. A collisionally ionized absorption model can naturally explain both features, while a charge exchange component can only account for the former. By including the additional ionized absorption, the plasma in the North Polar Spur can be described by a single-phase CIE component with temperature of 0.25 keV, and nitrogen, oxygen, neon, magnesium, and iron abundances of $0.4-0.8$ solar. The abundance pattern of the North Polar Spur is well in line with those of the Galactic halo stars. The high nitrogen-to-oxygen ratio reported in previous studies can be migrated to the large transmission of the O VIII Ly$\alpha$ line. The ionized absorber is characterized by a balance temperature of $0.17-0.20$ keV and a column density of $3-5 \times 10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$. Based on the derived abundances and absorption, we speculate that the North Polar Spur is a structure in the Galactic halo, so that the emission is mostly absorbed by Galactic ISM in the line of sight., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The fraction of ionizing photons that escape high-redshift galaxies sensitively determines whether galaxies reionized the early universe. However, this escape fraction cannot be measured from high-redshift galaxies because the opacity of the intergalactic medium is large at high redshifts. Without methods to indirectly measure the escape fraction of high-redshift galaxies, it is unlikely that we will know what reionized the universe. Here, we analyze the far-ultraviolet (UV) H I (Lyman series) and low-ionization metal absorption lines of nine low-redshift, confirmed Lyman continuum emitting galaxies. We use the H I covering fractions, column densities, and dust attenuations measured in a companion paper to predict the escape fraction of ionizing photons. We find good agreement between the predicted and observed Lyman continuum escape fractions (within $1.4\sigma$) using both the H I and ISM absorption lines. The ionizing photons escape through holes in the H I, but we show that dust attenuation reduces the fraction of photons that escape galaxies. This means that the average high-redshift galaxy likely emits more ionizing photons than low-redshift galaxies. Two other indirect methods accurately predict the escape fractions: the Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction and the optical [O III]/[O II] flux ratio. We use these indirect methods to predict the escape fraction of a sample of 21 galaxies with rest-frame UV spectra but without Lyman continuum observations. Many of these galaxies have low escape fractions ($f_{\rm esc} \le 1$\%), but 11 have escape fractions $>1$\%. We present the ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray spectra observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and the XMM-Newton satellite, respectively, of the low-z Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS F22456 – 5125. This object shows absorption from five distinct, narrow kinematic components that span a significant range in velocity (~0 to –700 km s–1) and ionization (Lyman series, C III, N III, and O VI). We also show that three of the five kinematic components in these lines appear to be saturated in Lyβ λ1026 and that all five components show evidence of saturation in the O VI doublet lines λλ1032, 1038. Further, all five components show evidence for partial covering due to the absorption seen in the O VI doublet. This object is peculiar because it shows no evidence for corresponding X-ray absorption to the UV absorption in the X-ray spectrum, which violates the 1:1 correlation known for low-z active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We perform photoionization modeling of the UV absorption lines and predict that the O VII column density should be small, which would produce little to no absorption in agreement with the X-ray observation. We also examine the UV variability of the continuum flux for this object (an increase of a factor of 6). As the absorption components lack variability, we find a lower limit of ~20 kpc for the distance for the absorbers from the central AGN.

In massive primordial galaxies, the gas may directly collapse and form a single central massive object if cooling is suppressed. Line cooling by molecular hydrogen can be suppressed in the presence of a strong soft-ultraviolet radiation field, but the role played by other cooling mechanisms is less clear. In optically thin gas, Lyman-Alpha cooling can be very effective, maintaining the gas temperature below 10^4 K over many orders of magnitude in density. However, the large neutral hydrogen column densities present in primordial galaxies render them highly optically thick to Lyman-Alpha photons. In this letter, we examine in detail the effects of the trapping of these Lyman-Alpha photons on the thermal and chemical evolution of the gas. We show that despite the high optical depth in the Lyman series lines, cooling is not strongly suppressed, and proceeds via other atomic hydrogen transitions, in particular the 2s-1s and the 3-2 transitions. At densities larger than 10^9 cm^{-3}, collisional dissociation of molecular hydrogen becomes the dominant cooling process and decreases the gas temperature to about 5000 K. The gas temperature evolves with density as $T \propto \rho^{\gamma_{\rm eff} - 1}$, with $\gamma_{\rm eff} = 0.97-0.98$. The evolution is thus very close to isothermal, and so fragmentation is possible, but unlikely to occur during the initial collapse. However, after the formation of a massive central object, we expect that later-infalling, higher angular momentum material will form an accretion disk that may be unstable to fragmentation, which may give rise to star formation with a top-heavy IMF., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted at ApJL

The role of higher order Lyman series photons in the 21 cm absorption or emission signature of the intergalactic medium (IGM) against the background cosmic microwave background (CMB) during the Epoch of Reionization is examined. It is shown that, taking into account the diminishing resonance line scattering cross-section with increasing Lyman order, a non-negligible net scattering rate of higher order Lyman photons is expected. The resulting radiative cascades will substantially enhance the number density of Lyα photons near a radiation source. It is also shown that the higher order Lyman series photons are able to collisionally heat the IGM by amounts of tens to hundreds of degrees kelvin. The possibility that the Wouthuysen-Field effect may be suppressed by the presence of dust near a galaxy is discussed, and it is shown that the higher order Lyman series photons would still induce the effect, but with a somewhat reduced 21 cm radiation efficiency. It is also demonstrated that extended low surface brightness emission-line haloes will be produced from radiative cascades following the scattering of higher order Lyman series photons. These haloes would provide a unique means of confirming that reionization source candidates were surrounded by an IGM that was still largely neutral on large scales.

The first, self-consistent calculations of the cosmological H_2 dissociating UV background produced during the epoch of reionization (EOR) by the sources of reionization are presented. Large-scale radiative transfer simulations of reionization trace the impact of all the ionizing starlight on the IGM from all the sources in our simulation volume down to dwarf galaxies of mass ~ 10^8 solar mass, identified by very high-resolution N-body simulations, including the self-regulating effect of IGM photoheating on dwarf galaxy formation. The UV continuum emitted below 13.6 eV by each source is then transferred through the same IGM, attenuated by atomic H Lyman series resonance lines, to predict the evolution of the inhomogeneous background in the Lyman-Werner band of H_2 between 11 and 13.6 eV., Comment: First Stars III Conference Proceedings; This is a summarized version of the journal paper to be submitted soon

Context. An accurate determination of the line broadening of the Lyman series of atomic hydrogen has been shown to be fundamental to interpretating UV and FUV spectra of DA white dwarfs. Quasi-molecular lines have been detected in the red wing of Lyman-α, Lyman-β, and Lyman-γ. They arise from radiative collisions of excited atomic hydrogen with unexcited neutral hydrogen atoms or protons. Aims. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we examine the range of validity of the one-perturber approximation widely used to calculate the line wing. Second, we study the relative contributions of the two main transitions contributing to the far wing of the Lyman-α line profile according to the effective temperature and perturber density. Methods. In cool white dwarfs, the perturber density is so high that the one-perturber approximation breaks down and the collisional effects must be treated by using the autocorrelation formalism in order to take into account simultaneous collisions with more than one perturbing atom. Results. We show that, at the low temperatures of cool white dwarfs, the contribution of the singlet X 1 Σ + → B 1 Σ + transition cannot be neglected in the calculation of Lyman-α profile perturbed by neutral hydrogen. A comparison with experimental laboratory spectra shows that the effects of multiple H-perturbers appear in the far wing. Conclusions. A reliable determination of the line profiles for the physical conditions of cool white dwarfs requires a unified theory that takes account of both the singlet and triplet transitions contributing to Lyman-α using accurate interaction potentials and radiative dipole transition moments. Multiple perturber effects must be considered and the autocorrelation formalism permits calculations for the densities of the atmospheres of cool white dwarfs.

We address the hypothesis that High Velocity Clouds correspond to the "missing" dwarf galaxies of the Local Group predicted by cosmological simulations. To this end, we present optical and near-infrared photometry of five additional High Velocity Clouds, one of which produces Lyman series absorption on the sight line towards the Quasar Ton S210, with sufficient resolution and sensitivity to enable the detection of an associated stellar content. We do not detect significant stellar populations intrinsic to any of the five clouds. In combination with the results from our paper I, which had yielded non detections of stellar content in another five cases, we find that there is a 50% chance of getting a null result in ten trials if fewer than 7% of all High Velocity Clouds contain stars. We conclude that the population of High Velocity Clouds is an unlikely repository for the "missing" dwarfs of the Local Group., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. submitted to MNRAS

We present new calculations of unified line profiles for hydrogen perturbed by collisions with protons. We report on new calculations of the potential energies and dipole moments which allow the evaluation of profiles for the lines of the Lyman series up to Lyman$\delta$ and the Balmer series up to Balmer10. Unified calculations only existed for the lines Lyman$\alpha$ to Lyman$\gamma$ and Balmer$\alpha$ including the H$_2^+$ quasi-molecule. These data are available as online material accompanying this paper and should be included in atmosphere models, in place of the Stark effect of protons, since the quasi-molecular contributions cause not only satellites, but large asymmetries that are unaccounted for in models that assume Stark broadening of electrons and protons are equal., Comment: 13 pages, 25 figures. (ABRIDGED) We present a Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer survey of highly ionized high-velocity clouds (HVCs) in 66 extragalactic sight lines. We find a total of 63 high-velocity O VI absorbers, 16 with 21 cm-emitting H I counterparts and 47 ``highly ionized'' absorbers without 21 cm emission. 11 of these high-velocity O VI absorbers are positive-velocity wings (broad O VI features extending asymmetrically to velocities of up to 300 km/s). The highly ionized HVC population is characterized by =38+/-10 km/s and =13.83+/-0.36. We find that 81% (30/37) of high-velocity O VI absorbers have clear accompanying C III absorption, and 76% (29/38) have accompanying H I absorption in the Lyman series. The lower average width of the high-velocity H I absorbers implies the H I lines arise in a separate, lower temperature phase than the O VI. We find that the shape of the wing profiles is well reproduced by a radiatively cooling, vertical outflow. However, the outflow has to be patchy and out of ionization equilibrium. An alternative model, consistent with the observations, is one where the highly ionized HVCs represent the low N(H I) tail of the HVC population, with the O VI formed at the interfaces around the embedded H I cores. Though we cannot rule out a Local Group explanation, we favor a Galactic origin. This is based on the recent evidence that both H I HVCs and the million-degree gas detected in X-ray absorption are Galactic phenomena. Since the highly ionized HVCs appear to trace the interface between these two Galactic phases, it follows that highly ionized HVCs are Galactic themselves. However, the non-detection of high-velocity O VI in halo star spectra implies that any Galactic high-velocity O VI exists at z-distances beyond a few kpc., Comment: 36 pages, 14 figures (3 in color), accepted to ApJS. We present an analysis of the intrinsic UV absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279 based on simultaneous long observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (41 ks) and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (91 ks). To extract the line-of-sight covering factors and ionic column densities, we separately fit two groups of absorption lines: the Lyman series and the CNO lithium-like doublets. For the CNO doublets we assume that all three ions share the same covering factors. The fitting method applied here overcomes some limitations of the traditional method using individual doublet pairs; it allows for the treatment of more complex, physically realistic scenarios for the absorption-emission geometry and eliminates systematic errors that we show are introduced by spectral noise. We derive velocity-dependent solutions based on two models of geometrical covering: a single covering factor for all background emission sources, and separate covering factors for the continuum and emission lines. Although both models give good statistical fits to the observed absorption, we favor the model with two covering factors because (1) the best-fit covering factors for both emission sources are similar for the independent Lyman series and CNO doublet fits; (2) the fits are consistent with full coverage of the continuum source and partial coverage of the emission lines by the absorbers, as expected from the relative sizes of the nuclear emission components; and (3) it provides a natural explanation for variability in the Lyα absorption detected in an earlier epoch. We also explore physical and geometrical constraints on the outflow from these results.

We investigate the applicability of inhomogeneous absorber models in the formation of AGN outflow absorption-troughs. The models we explore are limited to monotonic gradients of absorbing column densities in front of a finite emission source. Our main finding is that simple power-law and gaussian distributions are hard pressed to fit the Mrk 279 high-quality UV outflow data. An acceptable fit for the O VI troughs can only be obtained by assuming unrealistic optical depth values (upward of 100). The strongest constraints arise from the attempt to fit the Lyman series troughs. In this case it is evident that even allowing for complete freedom of both the power-law exponent and the optical depth as a function of velocity cannot yield an acceptable fit. In contrast, partial covering models do yield good fits for the Lyman series troughs. We conclude that monotonic inhomogeneous absorber models that do not include a sharp edge in the optical depth distribution across the source are not an adequate physical model to explain the trough formation mechanism for the outflow observed in Mrk 279.

The use of observations of the hydrogen Balmer absorption series is a well-established method of determining the surface gravity and effective temperature ( T eff ) of white dwarfs. In situations where the Balmer lines cannot be used it is possible to use the hydrogen Lyman series instead. However, previous studies by Barstow et al. have shown that for DAs (hydrogen-rich, no helium) hotter than ∼50 000 K the Lyman lines systematically yield higher values of T eff than the Balmer lines. Analysis of optical and FUSE spectra of 16 DAO white dwarfs (hybrid hydrogen/helium) demonstrates that temperatures measured using the different data sets continue to diverge at even higher temperatures, and in three extreme cases Teff derived from the Lyman lines is in excess of 120 000 K. These discrepancies are observed to decrease at lower gravities and luminosities. Helium abundances were also determined from the strength of He ii lines in the two wavelength regimes. These agree well, even though the temperatures differ considerably, with the exception of two DAO+M dwarf binaries. For these, the change in the measured helium abundance may result from the different times at which the objects were observed in the two wavelength regimes.

We present a study of the intrinsic X-ray and far-ultraviolet absorption in the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Markarian 279 using simultaneous observations from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). We also present FUSE observations made at three additional epochs. We detect the Fe K-alpha emission line in the Chandra spectrum, and its flux is consistent with the low X-ray continuum flux level of Mrk 279 at the time of the observation. Due to low signal-to-noise ratios in the Chandra spectrum, no O VII or O VIII absorption features are observable in the Chandra data, but the UV spectra reveal strong and complex absorption from HI and high-ionization species such as O VI, N V, and C IV, as well as from low-ionization species such as C III, N III, C II, and N II in some velocity components. The far-UV spectral coverage of the FUSE data provides information on high-order Lyman series absorption, which we use to calculate the optical depths and line and continuum covering fractions in the intrinsic HI absorbing gas in a self-consistent fashion. The UV continuum flux of Mrk 279 decreases by a factor of ~7.5 over the time spanning these observations and we discuss the implications of the response of the absorption features to this change. From arguments based on the velocities, profile shapes, covering fractions and variability of the UV absorption, we conclude that some of the absorption components, particularly those showing prominent low-ionization lines, are likely associated with the host galaxy of Mrk 279, and possibly with its interaction with a close companion galaxy, while the remainder arises in a nuclear outflow., Comment: To appear in 2004 May ApJS; double-column format; 58 pages, incl. 29 figures, 9 tables; minor changes to text

Absorption between the rest-frame wavelengths of 973 and 1026 A in quasar spectra arises from two sources (apart from occasional metals): one is due to Lyα absorption by materials at a low redshift, and the other is from Lyβ at a higher redshift. These two sources of absorption are to a good approximation uncorrelated because of their wide physical separation. Therefore, the two-point correlation of absorption in this region of quasar spectra neatly factorizes into two pieces: the Lyβ correlation at high-z and the Lyα correlation at low-z. The latter can be independently measured from quasar spectra at lower redshifts using current techniques. A simple division then offers a way to statistically separate out the Lyβ two-point correlation from the Lyα correlation. Several applications of this technique are discussed. First, since the Lyβ absorption cross section is lower than Lyα by about a factor of 5, the Lyβ forest is a better probe of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at higher redshifts, where Lyα absorption is often saturated. Second, for the same reason, the Lyβ forest allows a better measurement of the equation of state of the IGM at higher overdensities, yielding stronger constraints on its slope when used in conjunction with the Lyα forest. Third, models of the Lyα forest based on gravitational instability make unique predictions for the Lyβ forest, which can be tested against observations. We briefly point out that feedback processes, which affect higher density regions but leave low-density structure intact, may be better constrained by the Lyβ forest. Finally, extending our technique to the higher Lyman series is, in principle, possible but becomes increasingly difficult because of diminishing path lengths.

We have obtained FUSE and HST STIS spectra of HR 4796A, a nearby 8 Myr old main sequence star that possesses a dusty circumstellar disk whose inclination has been constrained from high resolution near-infrared observations to be ~17 deg from edge-on. We searched for circumstellar absorption in the ground states of C II at 1036.3 A, O I at 1039.2 A, Zn II at 2026.1 A, Lyman series H2, and CO (A-X) and failed to detect any of these species. We place upper limits on the column densities and infer upper limits on the gas masses assuming that the gas is in hydrostatic equilibrium, is well-mixed, and has a temperature, Tgas ~ 65 K. Our measurements suggest that this system possesses very little molecular gas. Therefore, we infer an upper limit for the gas:dust ratio (, 10 pages, 3 figures (including 1 color figure), accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a 63 ks FUSE observation of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Arakelian 564. The spectrum is dominated by the strong emission in the O VI \lambda\lambda1032, 1038 resonance doublet. Strong, heavily saturated absorption troughs due to Lyman series of Hydrogen, O VI and C III \lambda 977 at velocities near the systemic redshift of Arakelian564 are also observed. We used the column densities of O VI and C III in conjunction with the published column densities of species observed in the UV and X-ray bands to derive constraints on the physical parameters of the absorber through photoionization modeling. The available data suggest that the UV and X-ray absorbers in Arakelian~564 are physically related, and possibly identical. The combination of constraints indicates that the absorber is characterized by a narrow range in total column density N_H and U, centered at log N_H ~ 21 and log U ~ -1.5, and may be spatially extended along the line of sight.

With modern detectors it is now possible to image dilute gas near powerful sources of ionizing radiation. This note concerns hydrogen emission expected from such gas. Hydrogen recombination lines are usually said to be formed under either Case A or Case B conditions. Case B occurs when the neutral hydrogen column density is large enough for Lyman lines to be optically thick. They undergo multiple scatterings and are eventually degraded into a Balmer line and Lyα or two-photon emission. Case A occurs when the neutral hydrogen column density is small enough for Lyman lines to be optically thin and so freely escape the cloud. Optical and infrared hydrogen lines are weaker in Case A than Case B since a significant fraction of the energy escapes as Lyman lines.Numerical simulations presented here show that when a photoionized cloud is optically thin in the Lyman lines its optical and infrared emission is not described by Case A. These lines will always be enhanced by continuum pumping unless the continuum source contains strong Lyman absorption lines. Continuum fluorescence in the Lyman lines will usually be competitive with recombination since the integrated continuous oscillator strength of the Lyman continuum is of order that of the Lyman lines. The line spectrum produced by a low column density cloud is mainly determined by the spectrum of the incident radiation field and the Lyman line optical depth. This situation was defined in the original literature as "Case C." It was not developed because the central stars of nebulae might have strong Lyman absorption lines, and so little pumping occurs in the interstellar case. This effect will be generally important for lower column density clouds in extragalactic sources, where Lyman lines are seldom in absorption. The purpose of this note is to draw attention to Case C and to motivate more precise calculations of emission in this limit.

We present high-resolution observations of the higher H Lyman series lines taken with the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) experiment flown on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft. We have used systematic observations extending from disk center to the solar limb to compute average profiles for representative solar features of the quiet Sun, limb-brightening curves, and full-disk, quiet-Sun profiles for Ly? through Ly?(11) and the Lyman continuum. The effects of radiative transfer are apparent in all of the line profiles we studied. The average quiet-Sun profiles for Ly? through Ly are self-reversed, and the remaining lines are flat-topped. The characteristics of the line profiles vary markedly with intensity. We observe strong enhancements in the red wings of network profiles, while the faint cell-center profiles are nearly symmetric. We also find that the intensities of the H Lyman lines increase at the limb, although the limb brightening is weak compared to optically thin transition region emission lines and largely obscured by the intensity variations observed in the quiet Sun.

The positions and profiles of x-ray spectral lines emitted from well characterized laserproduced plasmas have been investigated. The red shifts observed for higher members of the aluminum Lyman series are consistent with theoretical predictions of the line shifts in hot dense plasmas. The experimentally observed profiles of Al XIII Lya line are interpreted by modeling the radiative transport through plasma with large transverse gradients.

Far-ultraviolet spectra of the gravitational lens components Q0957+561A and B were obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph (HST FOS). Two previously known absorption-line systems were detected at redshifts zdamped = 1.3911 and zLyα = 1.1249. Their prominent absorption features are superposed on intense QSO continuum emission between λλ900-1400 in the quasar rest frame. Strong O VI λ1033, Lyα λ1216, and N V λ1240 line emission found at the QSO redshift (zQSO = 1.41) accompany the absorption-line systems. Lyα through Ly associated with the damped absorption system were found in both lensed components, together with other ionic species of N I, N III, C II, C III, Si II, Si III, and O I. We tentatively identify O VI λλ1033, 1037 absorption at the damped Lyα redshift, which, if confirmed, would be the highest ionization species yet detected in such systems. The equivalent widths of the Lyman series in Q0957+561A are measurably greater compared with absorption in 0957+561B, consistent with the narrower and shallower depth of the Lyman series line profiles in image B. The differences of the damped Lyman series absorption in the lensed components are the only significant spectral characteristic that distinguishes the far-ultraviolet spectra of 0957+561A and B. These results indicate that the damped Lyα absorber is inhomogeneous over scale lengths of ~200 pc, which corresponds to the beam separation at the damped Lyα redshift. However, the equivalent widths of neutral and ionized metals in lens components A and B are correlated, which suggests these spectral features arise in an extended region. The metal line-absorption strength is consistent with lower column densities compared with the hydrogen line-forming region. Thus, the small coherence length scale indicated by the difference in hydrogen line absorption between the lensed components suggests the geometric ray paths intercept different regions of a galactic disk that is viewed pole-on, while the metal absorption occurs in the halo.

(Abridged) Aims. To probe the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the ionizing background radiation at z ~ 2 and to specify the sources contributing to the intergalactic radiation field. Methods. The spectrum of a bright quasar HS1103+6416 (zem = 2.19) contains five successive metal-line absorption systems at zabs = 1.1923, 1.7193, 1.8873, 1.8916, and 1.9410. The systems are optically thin and reveal multiple lines of different metal ions with the ionization potentials lying in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) range (1 Ryd to 0.2 keV). For each system, the EUV SED of the underlying ionization field is reconstructed by means of a special technique developed for solving the inverse problem in spectroscopy. For the zabs = 1.8916 system, the analysis also involves the HeI resonance lines of the Lyman series and the HeI 504 A continuum, which are seen for the first time in any cosmic object except the Sun. Results. From one system to another, the SED of the ionizing continuum changes significantly, indicating that the intergalactic ionization field at z ~ 2 fluctuates at the scale of at least Delta_z ~ 0.004. We present a grid of stellar synthetic spectra suitable for detailed comparison to far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations obtained with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT), IUE, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Our specific application is to study the hot stellar populations in elliptical galaxies, but we anticipate that the models will be useful for other purposes. The 1497 spectra span a range of 10,000 K ≤ Teff ≤ 250,000 K and 2 ≤ log g ≤ 8.5, with three metallicities: Z = Z☉, Z = 0.1 Z☉ and Z = 0.01 Z☉. A variety of simplifying assumptions have been made to reduce computer time and improve convergence, at the inevitable expense of some accuracy. Nevertheless, models in the grid reproduce the overall continuum shape and most of the absorption features seen in HUT spectra of four evolved stars at temperatures of 17,000, 29,900, 36,100, and 55,000 K. The most serious discrepancy is in the cores of the Lyman series lines, where the observed lines are not as deep as those obtained from the models. Until this problem is resolved, the Lyman series lines will not provide a very accurate measure of Teff or log g.While the synthetic spectra in this grid may not be appropriate for detailed analysis of high signal-to-noise ratio stellar spectra, they are sufficiently similar to the observed stars to provide a considerable advantage over existing models for the analysis of the FUV spectra of composite systems, such as elliptical galaxies and globular clusters, where the advantages of having a large, well-sampled grid of models tend to outweigh the known inadequacies of the individual grid points.

Raman-scattering by atomic hydrogen is a unique spectroscopic process that may probe the mass transfer and mass loss phenomena in symbiotic stars(SSs). In the optical high- resolution spectra of the S-type SS V455 Sco, we note the presence of two Raman-scattered features, one at around 6825 A with a triple-peak profile formed from Raman-scattering of O VI λ1032 and the other Raman-scattered He II λ1025 at around 6545 A. Adopting an accretion flow model with additional contribution from a collimated bipolar outflow, we propose that the blue and central peaks are contributed from the accretion flow and the bipolar flow is responsible for the remaining red peak. With the absence of [N II] λ6548, the Raman-scattered He II λ1025 at around 6545 A is immersed in the broad Ha wings that appear to be formed by Raman-scattering of far-UV continuum near Lyman series.

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) measurements and photoionization analysis of UV absorption in the 3 observations of the low‐z Seyfert 1 object IRAS F22456‐5125. These 5 distinct, narrow (FWHM>200 km/s) absorbers span a significant range in velocity (+100 to −700 km/s) and ionization (Lyman series, C III, N III, and O VI). We find that the object shows little evidence for corresponding X‐ray absorption, and shows variability in the continuum flux of the object (by a factor of 6) the timescale covered by the FUSE observations.In the coming HST cycle we will observe this object and 5 other low‐z quasars and Seyfert galaxies with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) as part of a systematic effort to determine the chemical abundances of AGN. These objects show strong C III absorption, which leads us to believe that these targets are good candidates to search for C III* 1173 A. Cosmic ultraviolet background radiation between 3 and 4 Ryd is reprocessed by resonant line absorption in the Lyman series of intergalactic He II. This process results in a sawtooth modulation of the radiation spectrum from the He II Lya frequency to the Lyman limit. The size of this modulation is a sensitive probe of the epoch of helium reionization and of the sources that keep the intergalactic medium (IGM) highly ionized. For large absorption opacities, the background intensity will peak at frequencies just above each resonance, go to zero at resonance, and fluctuate greatly just below resonance. Several textbooks discuss the interstellar medium in depth, notably The Physics of the Interstellar Medium (Dyson & Williams 1997) and The Physics and Chemistry of the Interstellar Medium (Tielens 2005). This chapter focuses on aspects relevant to massive stars, namely the properties of interstellar dust, ionized nebulae surrounding individual O stars (giant HII regions are discussed later on), wind blown bubbles and ejecta nebulae around LBVs and W-R stars. Diffuse gas in the ISM may be in a neutral or ionized form, of which 90% is in the form of hydrogen, either in an atomic, molecular, or ionized state. Cold (∼100 K), atomic hydrogen can be traced via the 21 cm (1420 MHz) hyperfine line, first predicted by van de Hulst (Bakker & van de Hulst 1945) and observed by Ewen & Purcell (1951). This provided the key means of mapping out the structure of the Milky Way and external galaxies. The Lyman series of neutral hydrogen can also be observed in the UV against a suitably hot background source. Most of the cold (∼10 K) molecular ISM is in the form of H 2 . This molecule, however, does not emit at radio wavelengths. Since H 2 is well correlated with carbon monoxide (CO), the CO emission at 1.3 and 2.6 mm is used as a proxy for H 2 .

Deuterium abundances in gaseous media reveal information on the baryon density of the universe Ω b and the processing of chemical elements by stars in galaxies. By observing D in its atomic form in regions that are not heavily populated by molecules, we avoid complications that arise from chemical fractionation when deuterated molecules are produced. Atomic D can be observed by a variety of means: (1) absorption features in the Lyman series, (2) fluorescent Balmer emission from photon-dominated regions associated with H II regions, and (3) emission from the 92-cm hyperfine transition. For the first of these, there is a rich history of investigations of gaseous matter in our Galaxy, and in the recent past D/H has been measured in very distant systems that appear in absorption in the spectra of quasars. Associated with these observations are a number of important technical considerations, which are explored here. The value of D/H in the local part of our Galaxy is about 23 ppm, which is slightly lower than 27 ppm derived from either the distant, low-metallicity gas systems or a prediction based on primordial nucleosynthesis yield for a value of Ω b determined from the temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation. Thus, the destruction of D by stellar processing in our Galaxy reduces D/H by less than about 20%, but many individual measurements far below 23 ppm indicate that significant amounts of D may be hidden on the surfaces of dust grains. A bewilderingly large dispersion of D/H seen in he distant systems may be resolved or at least better understood by the use of more powerful telescopes and spectrographs in the future.

PUBLISHED, We present highlights and an overview of 20 FUSE and HST STIS observations of the bright symbiotic binary EG And. The main motivation behind this work is to obtain spatially resolved information on an evolved giant star in order to understand the mass-loss processes at work in these objects. The system consists of a low-luminosity white dwarf and a mass-losing, nondusty M2 giant. The ultraviolet observations follow the white dwarf continuum through periodic gradual occultations by the wind and chromosphere of the giant, providing a unique diagnosis of the circumstellar gas in absorption. Unocculted spectra display high-ionization features, such as the O vi resonance doublet, which is present as a variable (hourly timescales), broad wind profile, which diagnose the hot gas close to the dwarf component. Spectra observed at stages of partial occultation display a host of low-ionization, narrow absorption lines,with transitions observed fromlower energy levels up to 5 eVabove ground. This absorption is due to chromospheric/wind material, with most lines due to transitions of Si ii, P ii, N i, Fe ii, andNi ii, as well as heavily damped H i Lyman series features.Nomolecular features are observed in the wind acceleration region despite the sensitivity of FUSE toH2. From analysis of the ultraviolet data set, as well as optical data, we find that the dwarf radiation does not dominate the wind acceleration region of the giant and that observed thermal and dynamic wind properties are most likely representative of isolated red giants.

We have made a Monte Carlo simulation of the intergalactic absorption in order to model the Lyman continuum absorption, which is required to estimate the escape fraction of the Lyman continuum from distant galaxies. To input into the simulation, we derive an empirical distribution function of the intergalactic absorbers which reproduces recent observational statistics of the Lyman $\alpha$ forest, Lyman limit systems (LLSs), and damped Lyman $\alpha$ systems (DLAs) simultaneously. In particular, we assume a common functional form of the number evolution along the redshift for all types of absorbers. The Lyman series transmissions in our simulation reproduce the observed redshift evolution of the transmissions excellently, and the Lyman continuum transmission also agrees with an observed estimation which is still quite rare in the literature. The probability distribution of the Lyman $\alpha$ opacity in our simulation is log-normal with a tail towards a large opacity. This tail is produced by DLAs. The probability distribution of the Lyman continuum opacity in our simulation also show a broad tail towards a large opacity. This tail is produced by LLSs. Because of the rarity of LLSs, we have a chance to have a clean line of sight in the Lyman continuum even for $z\sim4$ with a probability of about 20%. Our simulation expects a good correlation between the Lyman continuum opacity and the Lyman $\alpha$ opacity, which may be useful to estimate the former from the latter for an individual line of sight., Comment: MNRAS accepted

We have investigated the optical thickness of the coronal plasma through the analysis of high-resolution X-ray spectra of a large sample of active stars observed with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on Chandra. In particular, we probed for the presence of significant resonant scattering in the strong Lyman series lines arising from hydrogen-like oxygen and neon ions. The active RS CVn-type binaries II Peg and IM Peg and the single M dwarf EV Lac show significant optical depth. For these active coronae, the Lya/Lyb ratios are significantly depleted as compared with theoretical predictions and with the same ratios observed in similar active stars. Interpreting these decrements in terms of resonance scattering of line photons out of the line-of-sight, we are able to derive an estimate for the typical size of coronal structures, and from these we also derive estimates of coronal filling factors. For all three sources we find that the both the photon path length as a fraction of the stellar radius, and the implied surface filling factors are very small and amount to a few percent at most. The measured Lya/Lyb ratios are in good agreement with APED theoretical predictions, thus indicating negligible optical depth, for the other sources in our sample. We discuss the implications for coronal structuring and heating flux requirements. For the stellar sample as a whole, the data suggest increasing quenching of Lya relative to Lyb as function of both L_x/L_bol and the density-sensitive MgXI forbidden to intercombination line ratio, as might generally be expected., Accepted for publication on the Astrophysical Journal

The intensities of hydrogen Lyman-alpha and Balmer series emission lines as a result of photoexcitation of free CH4 and NH3 molecules at the C 1s and N 1s edges have been measured. For methane, the total fluorescence yield in the visible region ( 300 - 650 nm) was also recorded. Excitation functions of the Balmer lines show relative intensity enhancement of Balmer-beta emission in comparison with Balmer-alpha at higher core- to- Rydberg excitations. The Lyman-alpha emission intensity, in general, follows the relations observed in the corresponding total ion yield measurements. Additionally, the Balmer-gamma and -delta yields were measured for ammonia molecules and they show intensity maxima at photon energies shifted closer to the N 1s threshold than Balmer-alpha and -beta. A quantum defect analysis is performed to find out which core excitations are responsible for this enhanced intensity. Dissociation pathways leading to the emission in H atoms are discussed.

We re-examine scattering of photons near the Lyman-alpha resonance in the intergalactic medium (IGM). We first derive a general integral solution for the radiation field around resonance when spin diffusivity is ignored. Our solution shows explicitly that recoil sources an absorption feature, whose magnitude increases with the relative importance of recoil compared to Doppler broadening. This spectrum depends on the Lyman-alpha line profile, but approximating it with the absorption profile appropriate to the Lorentzian wings of natural broadening accurately reproduces the results for a full Voigt profile so long as T, 9 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present a detailed analysis of the intrinsic UV absorption in the central HDFS target QSO J2233-606, based on a high-resolution, high S/N (~25 -- 50) spectrum obtained with VLT/UVES. This spectrum samples the cluster of intrinsic absorption systems outflowing from the AGN at radial velocities v ~ -5000 -- -3800 km/s in the key far-UV diagnostic lines - the lithium-like CNO doublets and H I Lyman series. We fit the absorption troughs using a global model of all detected lines to solve for the independent velocity-dependent covering factors of the continuum and emission-line sources and ionic column densities. This reveals increasing covering factors in components with greater outflow velocity. Narrow substructure is revealed in the optical depth profiles, suggesting the relatively broad absorption is comprised of a series of multiple components. We perform velocity-dependent photoionization modeling, which allows a full solution to the C, N, and O abundances, as well as the velocity resolved ionization parameter and total column density. The absorbers are found to have supersolar abundances, with [C/H] and [O/H] ~0.5 -- 0.9, and [N/H] ~ 1.1 -- 1.3, consistent with enhanced nitrogen production expected from secondary nucleosynthesis processes. Independent fits to each kinematic component give consistent results for the abundances. The lowest-ionization material in each of the strong absorbers is modeled with similar ionization parameters. Components of higher-ionization (indicated by stronger O VI relative to C IV and N V) are present at velocities just redward of each low-ionization absorber. We examine the effect of Lyman continuum photons on the 21 cm background in the high-redshift universe. The brightness temperature of this transition is determined by the spin temperature T_s, which describes the relative populations of the singlet and triplet hyperfine states. Once the first luminous sources appear, T_s is set by the Wouthuysen-Field effect, in which Lyman-series photons mix the hyperfine levels. Here we consider coupling through n>2 Lyman photons. We first show that coupling (and heating) from scattering of Lyman-n photons is negligible, because they rapidly cascade to lower-energy photons. These cascades can result in either a Lyman-alpha photon -- which will then affect T_s according to the usual Wouthuysen-Field mechanism -- or photons from the 2s -> 1s continuum, which escape without scattering. We show that a proper treatment of the cascades delays the onset of strong Wouthuysen-Field coupling and affects the power spectrum of brightness fluctuations when the overall coupling is still relatively weak (i.e., around the time of the first stars). Cascades damp fluctuations on small scales because only ~ 1/3 of Lyn photons cascade through Lyman-alpha, but they do not affect the large-scale power because that arises from those photons that redshift directly into the Lyman-alpha transition. We present an analysis of the intrinsic UV absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279 based on simultaneous long observations with the ''Hubble Space Telescope'' (41 ks) and the ''Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer'' (91 ks). To extract the line-of-sight covering factors and ionic column densities, we separately fit two groups of absorption lines: the Lyman series and the CNO lithium-like doublets. For the CNO doublets we assume that all three ions share the same covering factors. The fitting method applied here overcomes some limitations of the traditional method using individual doublet pairs; it allows for the treatment of more complex, physically realistic scenarios for the absorption-emission geometry and eliminates systematic errors that we show are introduced by spectral noise. We derive velocity-dependent solutions based on two models of geometrical covering--a single covering factor for all background emission sources, and separate covering factors for the continuum and emission lines. Although both models give good statistical fits to the observed absorption, we favor the model with two covering factors because: (a) the best-fit covering factors for both emission sources are similar for the independent Lyman series and CNO doublet fits; (b) the fits are consistent with full coverage of the continuummore » source and partial coverage of the emission lines by the absorbers, as expected from the relative sizes of the nuclear emission components; and (c) it provides a natural explanation for variability in the Lya absorption detected in an earlier epoch. We also explore physical and geometrical constraints on the outflow from these results.« less

An analysis of Lyman series lines arising from hydrogen-like oxygen and neon ions in the coronae of the active RS CVn-type binaries II Peg and IM Peg, observed using the {\it Chandra} High Resolution Transmission Grating Spectrograph, shows significant decrements in the Ly$\alpha$/Ly$\beta$ ratios as compared with theoretical predictions and with the same ratios observed in similar active binaries. We interpret these decrements in terms of resonance scattering of line photons out of the line-of-sight; these observations present the first strong evidence for this effect in active stellar coronae. The net line photon loss implies a non-uniform and asymmetric surface distribution of emitting structures on these stars. Escape probability arguments, together with the observed line ratios and estimates of the emitting plasma density, imply typical line-of-sight sizes of the coronal structures that dominate the X-ray emission of $10^{10}$ cm at temperatures of $3\times 10^6$ K and of $10^8$ cm at $10^7$ K. These sizes are an order of magnitude larger than predicted by simple quasi-static coronal loops models, but are still very small compared to the several $10^{11}$ cm radii of the underlying stars., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ Letters. 14 pages, 2 figures

We have obtained high resolution FUSE and HST/STIS echelle observations of the quasar PG 1116+215. The semi-continuous coverage of the ultraviolet spectrum over the wavelength range 916-2800 provides detections of Galactic and high velocity cloud (HVC) absorption over a wide range of ionization species over the local standard of rest velocity range -100 - +200 km/s. The high dispersion of these spectra (6.5-20 km/s) reveals that low ionization species consist of five discrete components, three at low-to-intermediate velocities, and two at high velocities (v = +100, +184 km/s). Over the same velocity range, the higher ionization species show continuous absorption with column density peaks at v = +10 km/s +184 km/s. The absorption kinematics of the v=+184 km/s HVC suggest a scenario in which a low-ionization cloud of gas is streaming through a hot external medium that is stripping gas from this cloud. Using the OI and HI column densities, we estimate [O/H]=-0.66, with a substantial uncertainty due to saturation of the HI Lyman series. If the ionization of the cloud core is photonionization by the extragalactic UV background, we estimate the cloud has a density of 10^-2.7 cm^-3. If photons escaping the Galactic disk are also included, the density could be higher by nearly 2 dex. In either case, the relative abundances of O, Si, and Fe in the cloud core are readily explained by a solar pattern. Magellanic Stream gas is a possible origin for this gas and is consistent with the location of the HVC on the sky, as well as its high positive velocity, the ionization, and metallicity. We report on recent results from a high-resolution spectroscopic survey of hot DA white dwarfs, based on IUE, FUSE and HST observations. For the first time, we address the measurement of element abundances in a completely objective manner with a spectroscopic model fitting technique, which allows us to consider formally the limits that can be placed on abundances in stars where no heavy elements are detected. We also include our latest analysis of the high resolution EUV spectrum of G191-B2B recorded by J-PEX.

High velocity outflows from quasars are revealed by the absorption signatures they produce in the spectrum of the quasar. Clues on the nature and origin of these flows are important for our understanding of the dynamics of gas in the central regions of the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGNs) but also of the metal enrichment of the intergalactic space. Line radiation pressure has often been suggested to be an important process in driving these outflows, however no convincing evidence has been given so far. Here we report observation of a highly structured flow, toward Q~1511+091, where the velocity separations between distinct components are similar to O VI, N V and C IV doublet splittings with some of the profiles matching perfectly. This strongly favors the idea that the absorbing clumps originate at similar physical location and are driven by radiative acceleration due to resonance lines. The complex absorption can be understood if the flow is highly collimated so that the different optically thick clouds are aligned and cover the same region of the background source. One component shows saturated H I Lyman series lines together with absorptions from excited levels from C II and Si II but covers only 40% of the source of continuum. We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer observations of the star-forming galaxy Mrk 54 at z = 0.0448. The Lyman continuum radiation is not detected above the HI absorption edge in our Galaxy. An upper limit is evaluated by comparison with the background measured in regions of the detector adjacent to the observed spectrum. A spectral window of 16 A, reasonably free of additional HI Lyman series line absorption is used. No correction is needed for molecular hydrogen absorption in our Galaxy but a foreground extinction of 0.29 mag is accounted for. An upper limit of 6.15 10^{-16} erg/cm^2/s/A is obtained for the flux at ~ 900 A in the rest frame of Mrk 54. By comparison with the number of ionizing photons derived from the H-alpha flux, this limit translates into an upper limit of f_esc < 0.062 for the fraction of Lyman continuum photons that escape the galaxy without being absorbed by interstellar material. This limit compares with the limits obtained in three other nearby galaxies and is compatible with the escape fractions predicted by models. The upper limits obtained in nearby galaxies contrasts with the detection of Lyman continuum flux in the composite spectrum of Lyman-break galaxies at z ~ 3.4. Models for the formation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies require strong feedback in order to explain the observed properties of these systems. We investigate whether such feedback has observational consequences for the intergalactic medium, as probed in absorption towards background quasars. A typical quasar sight-line intersects one proto-cluster per unit redshift, and significant feedback from forming galaxies or AGN, heating the proto-cluster gas, will result in a large clearing of reduced absorption in the Lyman alpha-forest. Such a gap could be detected at redshift > 3 when the mean opacity is high. Feedback from Lyman-break galaxies in proto-clusters can be probed by the absorption lines produced in their winds. Strong feedback from galaxies has a major impact on the number and properties of absorption lines with neutral hydrogen column densities of 10^16/ cm^2. This feedback can be probed with multiple sight-lines and by studying the unsaturated higher-order lines of the Lyman series. Galactic winds from dwarf galaxies should break-up into clouds, in order not to over produce the number of absorption lines.
