Understanding the escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) and Lyman alpha (Lya) photons from molecular clouds is one of the keys to constraining the reionization history of the Universe and the evolution of galaxies at high redshift. Using a set of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations with adaptive mesh refinement, we investigate how photons propagate and escape from turbulent clouds with different masses, star formation efficiencies (SFEs), and metallicities, as well as with different models of stellar spectra and supernova feedback. We find that the escape fractions in both LyC and Lya are generally increasing with time if the cloud is efficiently dispersed by radiation and supernova feedback. When the total SFE is low (1% of the cloud mass), 0.1-5% of LyC photons leave the metal-poor cloud, whereas the fractions increase to 20-70% in clouds with a 10% SFE. LyC photons escape more efficiently if gas metallicity is lower, if the upper mass limit in the stellar initial mass function is higher, if binary interactions are allowed in the evolution of stars, or if additional strong radiation pressure, such as Lya pressure, is present. As a result, the number of escaping LyC photons can easily vary by a factor of $\sim4$ on cloud scales. The escape fractions of Lya photons are systemically higher (60-80%) than those of LyC photons despite large optical depths at line centre ($��_0\sim10^6-10^9$). Scattering of Lya photons is already significant on cloud scales, leading to double-peaked profiles with peak separations of $v_{\rm sep}\sim400\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ during the initial stage of the cloud evolution, while it becomes narrower than $v_{\rm sep} \le 150 \, {\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ in the LyC bright phase. Comparisons with observations of low-redshift galaxies suggest that Lya photons require further interactions with neutral hydrogen to reproduce their velocity offset for a given LyC escape fraction., 23 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

International audience; We present spatially resolved stellar kinematic maps, for the first time, for a sample of 17 intermediate redshift galaxies (0.2 less than or similar to z less than or similar to 0.8). We used deep MUSE/VLT integral held spectroscopic observations in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDFS) and Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), resulting from approximate to 30 h integration time per held, each covering 1' x 1' held of view, with approximate to 0''.65 spatial resolution. We selected all galaxies brighter than 25 mag in the I band and for which the stellar continuum is detected over an area that is at least two times larger than the spatial resolution. The resulting sample contains mostly late‐type disk, main‐sequence star‐forming galaxies with 10(8.5) M circle dot less than or similar to M,less than or similar to 10(10.5) M circle dot . Using a full‐spectrum fitting technique, we derive two‐dimensional maps of the stellar and gas kinematics, including the radial velocity V and velocity dispersion sigma . We find that most galaxies in the sample are consistent with having rotating stellar disks with roughly constant velocity dispersions and that the second order velocity moments V‐rms = root V‐2 + sigma(2) of the gas and stars, a scaling proxy for the galaxy gravitational potential, compare well to each other. These spatially resolved observations of the stellar kinematics of intermediate redshift galaxies suggest that the regular stellar kinematics of disk galaxies that is observed in the local Universe was already in place 4‐7 Gyr ago and that their gas kinematics traces the gravitational potential of the galaxy, thus is not dominated by shocks and turbulent motions. Finally, we build dynamical axisymmetric Jeans models constrained by the derived stellar kinematics for two specific galaxies and derive their dynamical masses. These are in good agreement (within 25%) with those derived from simple exponential disk models based on the gas kinematics. The obtained mass‐to‐light ratios hint towards dark matter dominated systems within a few effective radii.

We investigate the accuracy in the recovery of the stellar dynamics of barred galaxies when using axisymmetric dynamical models. We do this by trying to recover the mass-to-light ratio (M/L) and the anisotropy of realistic galaxy simulations using the Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion (JAM) method. However, given that the biases we find are mostly due to an application of an axisymmetric modeling algorithm to a non-axisymmetric system and in particular to inaccuracies in the de-projected mass model, our results are relevant for general axisymmetric modelling methods. We run N-body collisionless simulations to build a library with various luminosity distribution, constructed to mimic real individual galaxies, with realistic anisotropy. The final result of our evolved library of simulations contains both barred and unbarred galaxies. The JAM method assumes an axisymmetric mass distribution, and we adopt a spatially constant M/L and anisotropy beta_z=1-sigma_z^2/sigma_R^2 distributions. The models are fitted to two-dimensional maps of the second velocity moments V_rms=sqrt(V^2+sigma^2) of the simulations for various viewing angles (position angle of the bar and inclination of the galaxy). We find that the inclination is generally well recovered by the JAM models, for both barred and unbarred simulations. For unbarred simulations the M/L is also accurately recovered, with negligible median bias and with a maximum one of just Delta(M/L), 29 pages, 29 figures, LaTeX. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyse a set of galaxy interactions performed by using a self-consistent chemo-hydrodynamical model which includes star formation, Supernova feedback and chemical evolution. In agreement with previous works, we find that tidally-induced low-metallicity gas inflows dilute the central oxygen abundance and contribute to the flattening of the metallicity gradients. The tidally-induced inflows trigger starbursts which increase the impact of SN II feedback injecting new chemical elements and driving galactic winds which modulate the metallicity distribution. Although $\alpha$-enhancement in the central regions is detected as a result of the induced starbursts in agreement with previous works, our simulations suggest that this parameter can only provide a timing of the first pericentre mainly for non-retrograde encounters. In order to reproduce wet major mergers at low and high redshifts, we have run simulations with respectively 20 and 50 percent of the disc in form of gas. We find that the more gas-rich encounters behave similarly to the less rich ones, between the first and second pericentre where low-metallicity gas inflows are triggered. However, the higher strength of the inflows triggered in the more gas-rich interactions produces larger metal dilutions factors which are afterward modulated by the new chemical production by Supernova. We find that the more gas-rich interaction develops violent and clumpy star formation triggered by local instabilities all over the disc before the first pericentre, so that if these galaxies were observed at these early stages where no important tidally-induced inflows have been able to develop yet, they would tend to show an excess of oxygen. We find a global mean correlation of both the central abundances and the gradients with the strength of the star formation activity. The Monoceros ring is a collection of stars in nearly-circular orbits at roughly 18 kpc from the Galactic center. It may have originated (i) as the response of the disc to perturbations excited by satellite companions or (ii) from the tidal debris of a disrupted dwarf galaxy. The metallicity of Monoceros stars differs from that of disc stars at comparable Galactocentric distances, an observation that disfavours the first scenario. On the other hand, circular orbits are difficult to accommodate in the tidal-disruption scenario, since it requires a satellite which at the time of disruption was itself in a nearly circular orbit. Such satellite could not have formed at the location of the ring and, given its low mass, dynamical friction is unlikely to have played a major role in its orbital evolution. We search cosmological simulations for low-mass satellites in nearly-circular orbits and find that they result, almost invariably, from orbital changes induced by collisions with more massive satellites: the radius of the circular orbit thus traces the galactocentric distance of the collision. Interestingly, the Sagittarius dwarf, one of the most luminous satellites of the Milky Way, is in a polar orbit that crosses the Galactic plane at roughly the same Galactocentric distance as Monoceros. We use the SPHINX suite of high-resolution cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations to study how spatially and temporally inhomogeneous reionization impacts the baryonic content of dwarf galaxies and cosmic filaments. The SPHINX simulations simultaneously capture the large-scale process of reionization, model the escape of ionising radiation from thousands of galaxies, and resolve haloes well below the atomic cooling threshold. This makes them an ideal tool for examining how reionization impacts star formation and the gas content of dwarf galaxies. We compare simulations with and without stellar radiation to isolate the effects of radiation feedback from that of supernova, cosmic expansion, and numerical resolution. We find that the gas content of cosmic filaments can be reduced by more than 80% following reionization. The gas inflow rates into haloes with $M_{vir}\lesssim10^8M_{\odot}$ are strongly affected and are reduced by more than an order of magnitude compared to the simulation without reionization. A significant increase in gas outflow rates is found for halo masses $M_{vir}\lesssim7\times10^7M_{\odot}$. Our simulations show that inflow suppression (i.e. starvation), rather than photoevaporation, is the dominant mechanism by which the baryonic content of high-redshift dwarf galaxies is regulated. At fixed redshift and halo mass, there is a large scatter in the halo baryon fractions that is entirely dictated by the timing of reionization in the local region surrounding a halo. Finally, although the gas content of high-redshift dwarf galaxies is significantly impacted by reionization, we find that most haloes with $M_{vir}\lesssim10^8M_{\odot}$ can remain self-shielded and form stars long after reionization, until their local gas reservoir is depleted, suggesting that local group dwarf galaxies do not necessarily exhibit star formation histories that peak prior to $z=6$.
