We utilize photometric data from both TESS and ground-based follow-up observations to validate the ephemerides of the 5.09 day transiting signal and vet false-positive scenarios. High-contrast imaging data are used to resolve the stellar host and exclude stellar companions at separations ≳0farcs2. We obtain follow-up spectroscopy and corresponding precise radial velocities (RVs) with multiple precision radial velocity (PRV) spectrographs to confirm the planetary nature of the transiting exoplanet. We calculate a 5σ upper limit of MP < 7.1 M⊕ and ρP < 0.74 g cm−3, and we identify a nontransiting 17.7 day candidate. We also find evidence for a substellar (1–20 MJ) companion with a projected separation ≲20 au from a combined analysis of Gaia, adaptive optics imaging, and RVs. With the discovery of this outer companion, we carry out a detailed exploration of the possibilities that TOI 620 b might instead be a circum-secondary planet or a pair of eclipsing binary stars orbiting the host in a hierarchical triple system. We find, under scrutiny, that we can exclude both of these scenarios from the multiwavelength transit photometry, thus validating TOI 620 b as a low-density exoplanet transiting the central star in this system. The low density of TOI 620 b makes it one of the most amenable exoplanets for atmospheric characterization, such as with the James Webb Space Telescope and Ariel, validated or confirmed by the TESS mission to date. © 2022. We present spectroscopic measurements of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for WASP-148b, the only known hot Jupiter with a nearby warm-Jupiter companion, from the WIYN/NEID and Keck/HIRES instruments. This is one of the first scientific results reported from the newly commissioned NEID spectrograph, as well as the second obliquity constraint for a hot Jupiter system with a close-in companion, after WASP-47. WASP-148b is consistent with being in alignment with the sky-projected spin axis of the host star, with $\lambda=-8^{\circ}.2^{{+8^{\circ}.7}}_{-9^{\circ}.7}$. The low obliquity observed in the WASP-148 system is consistent with the orderly-alignment configuration of most compact multi-planet systems around cool stars with obliquity constraints, including our solar system, and may point to an early history for these well-organized systems in which migration and accretion occurred in isolation, with relatively little disturbance. By contrast, previous results have indicated that high-mass and hot stars appear to more commonly host a wide range of misaligned planets: not only single hot Jupiters, but also compact systems with multiple super-Earths. We suggest that, to account for the high rate of spin-orbit misalignments in both compact multi-planet and isolated-hot-Jupiter systems orbiting high-mass and hot stars, spin-orbit misalignments may be caused by distant giant planet perturbers, which are most common around these stellar types., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Accurate tracers of the stellar magnetic field and rotation are cornerstones for the study of M dwarfs and for reliable detection and characterization of their exoplanetary companions. Such measurements are particularly challenging for old, slowly rotating, fully convective M dwarfs. To explore the use of new activity and rotation tracers, we examined multi-year near-infrared spectroscopic monitoring of two such stars -- GJ 699 (Barnard's Star) and Teegarden's Star -- carried out with Habitable Zone Planet Finder spectrograph. We detected periodic variations in absorption line widths across the stellar spectrum with higher amplitudes towards longer wavelengths. We also detected similar variations in the strength and width of the 12435.67 Angstrom neutral potassium (K I) line, a known tracer of the photospheric magnetic field. Attributing these variations to rotational modulation, we confirm the known $145\pm15$ d rotation period of GJ 699, and measure the rotation period of Teegarden's Star to be $99.6\pm1.4$ d. Based on simulations of the K I line and the wavelength-dependence of the line width signal, we argue that the observed signals are consistent with varying photospheric magnetic fields and the associated Zeeman effect. These results highlight the value of detailed line profile measurements in the near-infrared for diagnosing stellar magnetic field variability. We present the discovery of a new Jovian-sized planet, TOI-3757 b, the lowest density planet orbiting an M dwarf (M0V). It orbits a solar-metallicity M dwarf discovered using TESS photometry and confirmed with precise radial velocities (RV) from HPF and NEID. With a planetary radius of $12.0^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$ $R_{\oplus}$ and mass of $85.3^{+8.8}_{-8.7}$ $M_{\oplus}$, not only does this object add to the small sample of gas giants ($\sim 10$) around M dwarfs, but also, its low density ($\rho =$ $0.27^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$ $\textrm{g~cm}^{-3}$) provides an opportunity to test theories of planet formation. We present two hypotheses to explain its low density; first, we posit that the low metallicity of its stellar host ($\sim$ 0.3 dex lower than the median metallicity of M dwarfs hosting gas giants) could have played a role in the delayed formation of a solid core massive enough to initiate runaway accretion. Second, using the eccentricity estimate of $0.14 \pm 0.06$ we determine it is also plausible for tidal heating to at least partially be responsible for inflating the radius of TOI-3757b b. The low density and large scale height of TOI-3757 b makes it an excellent target for transmission spectroscopy studies of atmospheric escape and composition (TSM $\sim$ 190). We use HPF to perform transmission spectroscopy of TOI-3757 b using the helium 10830 \AA~ line. Doing this, we place an upper limit of 6.9 \% (with 90\% confidence) on the maximum depth of the absorption from the metastable transition of He at $\sim$ 10830 \AA, which can help constraint the atmospheric mass loss rate in this energy limited regime., Comment: AJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2107.13670

In recent years, technical and theoretical work to detect moons and rings around exoplanets has been attempted. The small mass/size ratios between moons and planets means this is very challenging, having only one exoplanetary system where spotting an exomoon might be feasible (i.e. Kepler-1625b i). In this work, we study the dynamical evolution of ringed exomoons, dubbed "cronomoons" after their similarity with Cronus (Greek for Saturn), and after Chronos (the epitome of time), following the Transit Timing Variations (TTV) and Transit Duration Variation (TDV) that they produce on their host planet. Cronomoons have extended systems of rings that make them appear bigger than they actually are when transiting in front of their host star. We explore different possible scenarios that could lead to the formation of such circumsatellital rings, and through the study of the dynamical/thermodynamic stability and lifespan of their dust and ice ring particles, we found that an isolated cronomoon can survive for time-scales long enough to be detected and followed up. If these objects exist, cronomoons' rings will exhibit gaps similar to Saturn's Cassini Division and analogous to the asteroid belt's Kirkwood gaps, but instead raised due to resonances induced by the host planet. Finally, we analyse the case of Kepler-1625b i under the scope of this work, finding that the controversial giant moon could instead be an Earth-mass cronomoon. We obtained high-resolution spectra of the ultra-cool M-dwarf TRAPPIST-1 during the transit of its planet `b' using two high dispersion near-infrared spectrographs, IRD instrument on the Subaru 8.2m telescope and HPF instrument on the 10m Hobby-Eberly Telescope. These spectroscopic observations are complemented by a photometric transit observation for planet `b' using the APO/ARCTIC, which assisted us to capture the correct transit times for our transit spectroscopy. Using the data obtained by the new IRD and HPF observations, as well as the prior transit observations of planets `b', `e' and `f' from IRD, we attempt to constrain the atmospheric escape of the planet using the He I triplet 10830 �� absorption line. We do not detect evidence for any primordial extended H-He atmospheres in all three planets. Unveiling the fate of ultra-short period (USP) planets may help us understand the qualitative agreement between tidal theory and the observed exoplanet distribution. Nevertheless, due to the time-varying interchange of spin-orbit angular momentum in star-planet systems, the expected amount of tidal friction is unknown and depends on the dissipative properties of stellar and planetary interiors. In this work, we couple structural changes in the star and the planet resulting from the energy released per tidal cycle and simulate the orbital evolution of USP planets and the spin-up produced on their host star. For the first time, we allow the strength of magnetic braking to vary within a model that includes photo-evaporation, drag caused by the stellar wind, stellar mass loss, and stellar wind enhancement due to the in-falling USP planet. We apply our model to the two exoplanets with the shortest periods known to date, NGTS-10b and WASP-19b. We predict they will undergo orbital decay in time-scales that depend on the evolution of the tidal dissipation reservoir inside the star, as well as the contribution of the stellar convective envelope to the transfer of angular momentum. Contrary to previous work, which predicted mid-transit time shifts of $\sim30-190$ s over 10 years, we found that such changes would be smaller than 10 s. We note this is sensitive to the assumptions about the dissipative properties of the system. The coherent low-frequency radio emission detected by LOFAR from Gliese 1151, a quiescent M4.5 dwarf star, has radio emission properties consistent with theoretical expectations of star-planet interactions for an Earth-sized planet on a 1-5 day orbit. New near-infrared radial velocities from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder (HPF) spectrometer on the 10m Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory, combined with previous velocities from HARPS-N, reveal a periodic Doppler signature consistent with an $m\sin i = 2.5 \pm 0.5 M_\oplus$ exoplanet on a 2.02-day orbit. Precise photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) shows no flares or activity signature, consistent with a quiescent M dwarf. While no planetary transit is detected in the TESS data, a weak photometric modulation is detectable in the photometry at a $\sim2$ day period. This independent detection of a candidate planet signal with the Doppler radial-velocity technique adds further weight to the claim of the first detection of star-exoplanet interactions at radio wavelengths, and helps validate this emerging technique for the detection of exoplanets., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

NEID is a high-resolution optical spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5-m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory and will soon join the new generation of extreme precision radial velocity instruments in operation around the world. We plan to use the instrument to conduct the NEID Earth Twin Survey (NETS) over the course of the next 5 years, collecting hundreds of observations of some of the nearest and brightest stars in an effort to probe the regime of Earth-mass exoplanets. Even if we take advantage of the extreme instrumental precision conferred by NEID, it will remain difficult to disentangle the weak (~10 cm s$^{-1}$) signals induced by such low-mass, long-period exoplanets from stellar noise for all but the quietest host stars. In this work, we present a set of quantitative selection metrics which we use to identify an initial NETS target list consisting of stars conducive to the detection of exoplanets in the regime of interest. The Gaia Alert System issued an alert on 2020 August 28, on Gaia 20eae when its light curve showed a $\sim$4.25 magnitude outburst. We present multi-wavelength photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations of this source since 2020 August and identify it as the newest member of the FUor/EXor family of sources. We find that the present brightening of Gaia 20eae is not due to the dust clearing event but due to an intrinsic change in the spectral energy distribution. The light curve of Gaia 20eae shows a transition stage during which most of its brightness ($\sim$3.4 mag) has occurred at a short timescale of 34 days with a rise-rate of 3 mag/month. Gaia 20eae has now started to decay at a rate of 0.3 mag/month. We have detected a strong P Cygni profile in H$\alpha$ which indicates the presence of winds originating from regions close to the accretion. We find signatures of very strong and turbulent outflow and accretion in Gaia 20eae during this outburst phase. We have also detected a red-shifted absorption component in all the Ca II IR triplet lines consistent with signature of hot in-falling gas in the magnetospheric accretion funnel. This enables us to constrain the viewing angle with respect to the accretion funnel. Early in their lives, planets endure extreme amounts of ionizing radiation from their host stars. For planets with primordial hydrogen and helium-rich envelopes, this can lead to substantial mass loss. Direct observations of atmospheric escape in young planetary systems can help elucidate this critical stage of planetary evolution. In this work, we search for metastable helium absorption---a tracer of tenuous gas in escaping atmospheres---during transits of three planets orbiting the young solar analogue V1298 Tau. We characterize the stellar helium line using HET/HPF, and find that it evolves substantially on timescales of days to months. The line is stable on hour-long timescales except for one set of spectra taken during the decay phase of a stellar flare, where absoprtion increased with time. Utilizing a beam-shaping diffuser and a narrowband filter centered on the helium feature, we observe four transits with Palomar/WIRC: two partial transits of planet d ($P = 12.4$ days), one partial transit of planet b ($P = 24.1$ days), and one full transit of planet c ($P = 8.2$ days). We do not detect the transit of planet c, and we find no evidence of excess absorption for planet b, with $\Delta R_\mathrm{b}/R_\star, Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted to AJ

The MCAO Assisted Visible Imager and Spectrograph (MAVIS) is a facility-grade visible MCAO instrument, currently under development for the Adaptive Optics Facility at the VLT. The adaptive optics system will feed both an imager and an integral field spectrograph, with unprecedented sky coverage of 50% at the Galactic Pole. The imager will deliver diffraction-limited image quality in the V band, cover a 30" x 30" field of view, with imaging from U to z bands. The conceptual design for the spectrograph has a selectable field-of-view of 2.5" x 3.6", or 5" x 7.2", with a spatial sampling of 25 or 50 mas respectively. It will deliver a spectral resolving power of R=5,000 to R=15,000, covering a wavelength range from 380 - 950 nm. The combined angular resolution and sensitivity of MAVIS fill a unique parameter space at optical wavelengths, that is highly complementary to that of future next-generation facilities like JWST and ELTs, optimised for infrared wavelengths. MAVIS will facilitate a broad range of science, including monitoring solar system bodies in support of space missions; resolving protoplanetary- and accretion-disk mechanisms around stars; combining radial velocities and proper motions to detect intermediate-mass black holes; characterising resolved stellar populations in galaxies beyond the local group; resolving galaxies spectrally and spatially on parsec scales out to 50 Mpc; tracing the role of star clusters across cosmic time; and characterising the first globular clusters in formation via gravitational lensing. We describe the science cases and the concept designs for the imager and spectrograph.

In the new era of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) currently under construction, challenging requirements drive spectrograph designs towards techniques that efficiently use a facility's light collection power. Operating in the single-mode (SM) regime, close to the diffraction limit, reduces the footprint of the instrument compared to a conventional high-resolving power spectrograph. The custom built injection fiber system with 3D-printed microlenses on top of it for the replicable high-resolution exoplanet and asteroseismology spectrograph (RHEA) at Subaru in combination with extreme adaptive optics of SCExAO, proved its high efficiency in a lab environment, manifesting up to ∼77% of the theoretical predicted performance.

NEID is a radial velocity (RV) instrument including an ultra-stabilized fiber-fed spectrograph, installed in 2019 at the 3.5m WIYN telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Accompanying it is a solar feed system built to supply the spectrograph with disk-integrated sunlight. Observing the Sun “as a star” is essential for developing and validating mitigation strategies for RV variations due to stellar activity and instrument systematics, thus enabling more-effective detections of lower-mass exoplanets. In this paper, we will detail the design of the NEID solar feed system and showcase early results addressing NEID systematics and solar RV variability.

We report on our efforts to develop a whispering gallery mode resonator etalon as a tool for precision radial velocity observations to detect exoplanets. The crystalline MgF2 etalon will be referenced to a compact fiber laser frequency comb, and will serve as the wavelength calibration source for a stabilized, high resolution, visible band spectrograph. The extreme stability required for the detection and characterization of exo-Earths orbiting solar-type stars will be achieved by employing a composite resonator structure with a compensating material to balance the resonator’s coefficients of thermal expansion and thermal refractivity. Progress in modeling the etalon to achieve single mode-like performance, and experiments to demonstrate broad-band (octave-spanning) ling to a white light source, are described.

The Macquarie University campus observatory has recently undergone a significant upgrade, with a new fully- automated 0.6 m telescope and on-site facilities including an instrumentation laboratory. Here we report on the design, assembly, and first on-sky tests of a new high-resolution echelle spectrograph for the observatory. This spectrograph will be a key resource at our campus observatory, providing high fidelity measurements that will enable future research, in particular Master and PhD theses that require stellar spectroscopy or radial velocity measurements. The instrument will also form a cornerstone of the laboratory components of the undergraduate astronomy degree, and together with the new 0.6 m telescope, a key tool for project-based learning at the campus observatory. The instrument has been developed with radial velocity precision as the driving metric, and with future work on the environmental stabilisation it is expected to reach a radial velocity precision of 3 m s−1, enabling the observation of a wide range of exoplanets.

Since the first discovery of a planet outside of our Solar System in 1995, exoplanet research has shifted from detecting to characterizing worlds around other stars. The TESS (NASA, launched 2019) and PLATO mission (ESA, planned launch 2026) will find and constrain the size of thousands of exoplanets around bright stars all over the sky. Radial velocity measurements are needed to characterize the orbit and mass, and complete the picture of densities and composition of the exoplanet systems found. The Ariel mission (ESA, planned launch 2028) will characterize exoplanet atmospheres with infrared spectroscopy. Characterization of stellar activity using optical spectroscopy from the ground is key to retrieve the spectral footprint of the planetary atmosphere in Ariel's spectra. To enable the scientific harvest of the TESS, PLATO and Ariel space missions, we plan to install MARVEL as an extension of the existing Mercator Telescope at the Roque De Los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma (SPAIN). MARVEL consists of an array of four 80 cm telescopes linked through optical fibers to a single high-resolution echelle spectrograph, optimized for extreme-precision radial velocity measurements. It can observe the radial velocities of four different stars simultaneously or, alternatively, combine the flux from four telescopes pointing to a single faint target in one spectrum. MARVEL is constructed by a KU Leuven (Belgium) led collaboration, with contributions from the UK, Austria, Australia, Sweden, Denmark and Spain. We report on the validation of two planets orbiting the nearby (36 pc) M2 dwarf TOI-1266 observed by the TESS mission. This system is one of a few M dwarf multiplanet systems with close-in planets where the inner planet is substantially larger than the outer planet. The inner planet is sub-Neptune-sized (R = 2.46 ± 0.08 R_⊕) with an orbital period of 10.9 days, while the outer planet has a radius of 1.67_(-0.11)^(+0.09) R_⊕ and resides in the exoplanet radius valley—the transition region between rocky and gaseous planets. With an orbital period of 18.8 days, the outer planet receives an insolation flux of 2.4 times that of Earth, similar to the insolation of Venus. Using precision near-infrared radial velocities with the Habitable-zone Planet Finder Spectrograph, we place upper mass limits of 15.9 and 6.4 M_⊕ at 95% confidence for the inner and outer planet, respectively. A more precise mass constraint of both planets, achievable with current radial velocity instruments given the host star brightness (V = 12.9, J = 9.7), will yield further insights into the dominant processes sculpting the exoplanet radius valley.

The space missions TESS and PLATO plan to double the number of 4000 exoplanets already discovered and will measure the size of thousands of exoplanets around the brightest stars in the sky, allowing ground-based radial velocity spectroscopy follow-up to determine the orbit and mass of the detected planets. The new facility we are developing, MARVEL (Raskin et al. this conference1 ), will enable the ground-based follow-up of large numbers of exoplanet detections expected from TESS and PLATO, which cannot be carried out only by the current facilities that achieve the necessary radial velocity accuracy of 1 ms-1 or less. This paper presents the MARVEL observation strategy and performance analysis based on predicted PLATO transit detection yield simulations. The resulting observation scenario baseline will help in the instrument design choices and demonstrate the effectiveness of MARVEL as a TESS and PLATO science enabling facility.

The warm Neptune GJ 3470b transits a nearby ($d=29$pc) bright slowly rotating M1.5-dwarf star. Using spectroscopic observations during two transits with the newly commissioned NEID spectrometer on the WIYN 3.5m Telescope at Kitt Peak Observatory, we model the classical Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect yielding a sky-projected obliquity of $\lambda=98_{-12}^{+15\:\circ}$ and a $v \sin i = 0.85_{-0.33}^{+0.27}$km/s. Leveraging information about the rotation period and size of the host star, our analysis yields a true obliquity of $\psi=95_{-8}^{+9\:\circ}$, revealing that GJ 3470b is on a polar orbit. Using radial velocities from HIRES, HARPS and the Habitable-zone Planet Finder, we show that the data are compatible with a long-term RV slope of $\dot{\gamma} = -0.0022 \pm 0.0011$m/s/day over a baseline of 12.9 years. If the RV slope is due to acceleration from another companion in the system, we show that such a companion is capable of explaining the polar and mildly eccentric orbit of GJ 3470b using two different secular excitation models. The existence of an outer companion can be further constrained with additional RV observations, Gaia astrometry, and future high-contrast imaging observations. Lastly, we show that tidal heating from GJ 3470b's mild eccentricity has most likely inflated the radius of GJ 3470b by a factor of $\sim$1.5-1.7, which could help account for its evaporating atmosphere., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures. Using radial-velocity data from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder, we have measured the mass of the Neptune-sized planet K2-25b, as well as the obliquity of its M4.5-dwarf host star in the 600-800MYr Hyades cluster. This is one of the youngest planetary systems for which both of these quantities have been measured, and one of the very few M dwarfs with a measured obliquity. Based on a joint analysis of the radial velocity data, time-series photometry from the K2 mission, and new transit light curves obtained with diffuser-assisted photometry, the planet's radius and mass are $3.44\pm 0.12 \mathrm{R_\oplus}$ and $24.5_{-5.2}^{+5.7} \mathrm{M_\oplus}$. These properties are compatible with a rocky core enshrouded by a thin hydrogen-helium atmosphere (5% by mass). We measure an orbital eccentricity of $e=0.43 \pm 0.05$. The sky-projected stellar obliquity is $\lambda=3 \pm 16^{\circ}$, compatible with spin-orbit alignment, in contrast to other "hot Neptunes" that have been studied around older stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ, 31 pages, 14 figures

Solar contamination, due to moonlight and atmospheric scattering of sunlight, can cause systematic errors in stellar radial velocity (RV) measurements that significantly detract from the ~10 cm s−1 sensitivity required for the detection and characterization of terrestrial exoplanets in or near habitable zones of Sun-like stars. The addition of low-level spectral contamination at variable effective velocity offsets introduces systematic noise when measuring velocities using classical mask-based or template-based cross-correlation techniques. Here we present simulations estimating the range of RV measurement error induced by uncorrected scattered sunlight contamination. We explore potential correction techniques, using both simultaneous spectrometer sky fibers and broadband imaging via coherent fiber imaging bundles, that could reliably reduce this source of error to below the photon-noise limit of typical stellar observations. We discuss the limitations of these simulations, the underlying assumptions, and mitigation mechanisms. We also present and discuss the components designed and built into the NEID (NN-EXPLORE Exoplanet Investigations with Doppler spectroscopy) precision RV instrument for the WIYN 3.5 m telescope, to serve as an ongoing resource for the community to explore and evaluate correction techniques. We emphasize that while "bright time" has been traditionally adequate for RV science, the goal of 10 cm s−1 precision on the most interesting exoplanetary systems may necessitate access to darker skies for these next-generation instruments.

We validate the discovery of a 2 Earth radii sub-Neptune-size planet around the nearby high proper motion M2.5-dwarf G 9-40 (EPIC 212048748), using high-precision near-infrared (NIR) radial velocity (RV) observations with the Habitable-zone Planet Finder (HPF), precision diffuser-assisted ground-based photometry with a custom narrow-band photometric filter, and adaptive optics imaging. At a distance of $d=27.9\mathrm{pc}$, G 9-40b is the second closest transiting planet discovered by K2 to date. The planet's large transit depth ($\sim$3500ppm), combined with the proximity and brightness of the host star at NIR wavelengths (J=10, K=9.2) makes G 9-40b one of the most favorable sub-Neptune-sized planet orbiting an M-dwarf for transmission spectroscopy with JWST, ARIEL, and the upcoming Extremely Large Telescopes. The star is relatively inactive with a rotation period of $\sim$29 days determined from the K2 photometry. To estimate spectroscopic stellar parameters, we describe our implementation of an empirical spectral matching algorithm using the high-resolution NIR HPF spectra. Using this algorithm, we obtain an effective temperature of $T_{\mathrm{eff}}=3404\pm73$K, and metallicity of $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-0.08\pm0.13$. Our RVs, when coupled with the orbital parameters derived from the transit photometry, exclude planet masses above $11.7 M_\oplus$ with 99.7% confidence assuming a circular orbit. From its radius, we predict a mass of $M=5.0^{+3.8}_{-1.9} M_\oplus$ and an RV semi-amplitude of $K=4.1^{+3.1}_{-1.6}\mathrm{m\:s^{-1}}$, making its mass measurable with current RV facilities. One limitation in characterizing exoplanet candidates is the availability of infrared, high-resolution spectrographs. An important factor in the scarcity of high precision IR spectrographs is the high cost of these instruments. We present a new optical design, which leads to a cost-effective solution. Our instrument is a high-resolution (R=60,000) infrared spectrograph with a R6 Echelle grating and an image slicer. We compare the best possible performance of quasi-Littrow and White Pupil setups, and prefer the latter because it achieves higher image quality. The instrument is proposed for the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) 6.5 m telescope in Chile. The Tao Aiuc high Resolution (d) Y band Spectrograph (TARdYS) covers 0.843-1.117 um. To reduce the cost, we squeeze 42 spectral orders onto a 1K detector with a semi-cryogenic solution. We obtain excellent resolution even when taking realistic manufacturing and alignment tolerances as well as thermal variations into account. In this paper, we present early results from the prototype of this spectrograph at ambient temperature.

Young, rapidly-rotating M dwarfs exhibit prominent starspots, which create quasiperiodic signals in their photometric and Doppler spectroscopic measurements. The periodic Doppler signals can mimic radial velocity (RV) changes expected from orbiting exoplanets. Exoplanets can be distinguished from activity-induced false positives by the chromaticity and long-term incoherence of starspot signals, but these qualities are poorly constrained for fully-convective M stars. Coherent photometric starspot signals on M dwarfs may persist for hundreds of rotations, and the wavelength dependence of starspot RV signals may not be consistent between stars due to differences in their magnetic fields and active regions. We obtained precise multi-wavelength RVs of four rapidly-rotating M dwarfs (AD Leo, G 227-22, GJ 1245B, GJ 3959) using the near-infrared (NIR) Habitable-zone Planet Finder, and the optical Keck/HIRES spectrometer. Our RVs are complemented by photometry from Kepler, TESS, and the Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) network of telescopes. We found that all four stars exhibit large spot-induced Doppler signals at their rotation periods, and investigated the longevity and optical-to-NIR chromaticity for these signals. The phase curves remain coherent much longer than is typical for Sunlike stars. Their chromaticity varies, and one star (GJ 3959) exhibits optical and NIR RV modulation consistent in both phase and amplitude. In general, though, we find that the NIR amplitudes are lower than their optical counterparts. We conclude that starspot modulation for rapidly-rotating M stars frequently remains coherent for hundreds of stellar rotations, and gives rise to Doppler signals that, due to this coherence, may be mistaken for exoplanets., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present high-resolution observations of a flaring event in the M8 dwarf vB 10 using the near-infrared Habitable zone Planet Finder (HPF) spectrograph on the Hobby Eberly Telescope (HET). The high stability of HPF enables us to accurately subtract a VB 10 quiescent spectrum from the flare spectrum to isolate the flare contributions, and study the changes in the relative energy of the Ca II infrared triplet (IRT), several Paschen lines, the He 10830 \AA~ triplet lines, and select iron and magnesium lines in HPF`s bandpass. Our analysis reveals the presence of a red asymmetry in the He 10830 \AA~ triplet; which is similar to signatures of coronal rain in the Sun. Photometry of the flare derived from an acquisition camera before spectroscopic observations, and the ability to extract spectra from up-the-ramp observations with the HPF infrared detector, enables us to perform time-series analysis of part of the flare, and provide coarse constraints on the energy and frequency of such flares. We compare this flare with historical observations of flares around vB 10 and other ultracool M dwarfs, and attempt to place limits on flare-induced atmospheric mass loss for hypothetical planets around vB 10., Comment: Accepted in ApJ. 22 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables

We confirm the planetary nature of TOI-532b, using a combination of precise near-infrared radial velocities with the Habitable-zone Planet Finder, TESS light curves, ground based photometric follow-up, and high-contrast imaging. TOI-532 is a faint (J$\sim 11.5$) metal-rich M dwarf with Teff = $3957\pm69$ K and [Fe/H] = $0.38\pm0.04$; it hosts a transiting gaseous planet with a period of $\sim 2.3$ days. Joint fitting of the radial velocities with the TESS and ground-based transits reveal a planet with radius of $5.82\pm0.19$ R$_{\oplus}$, and a mass of $61.5_{-9.3}^{+9.7}$ M$_{\oplus}$. TOI-532b is the largest and most massive super Neptune detected around an M dwarf with both mass and radius measurements, and it bridges the gap between the Neptune-sized planets and the heavier Jovian planets known to orbit M dwarfs. It also follows the previously noted trend between gas giants and host star metallicity for M dwarf planets. The discovery and characterization of exoplanets around nearby stars are driven by profound scientific questions about the uniqueness of Earth and our solar system, and the conditions under which life could exist elsewhere in our galaxy. Doppler spectroscopy, or the radial velocity (RV) technique, has been used extensively to identify hundreds of exoplanets, but with notable challenges in detecting terrestrial mass planets orbiting within habitable zones. We describe infrared RV spectroscopy at the 10 m Hobby–Eberly Telescope that leverages a 30 GHz electro-optic laser frequency comb with a nanophotonic supercontinuum to calibrate the Habitable Zone Planet Finder spectrograph. We report the discovery of a second planet orbiting the K giant star 7 CMa based on 166 high-precision radial velocities obtained with Lick, HARPS, UCLES and SONG. The periodogram analysis reveals two periodic signals of approximately 745 and 980 d, associated to planetary companions. A double-Keplerian orbital fit of the data reveals two Jupiter-like planets with minimum masses $m_b\sin i \sim 1.9 \,\mathrm{M_{J}}$ and $m_c\sin i \sim 0.9 \,\mathrm{M_{J}}$, orbiting at semi-major axes of $a_b \sim 1.75\,\mathrm{au}$ and $a_c \sim 2.15\,\mathrm{au}$, respectively. Given the small orbital separation and the large minimum masses of the planets close encounters may occur within the time baseline of the observations, thus, a more accurate N-body dynamical modeling of the available data is performed. The dynamical best-fit solution leads to collision of the planets and we explore the long-term stable configuration of the system in a Bayesian framework, confirming that 13% of the posterior samples are stable for at least 10 Myr. The result from the stability analysis indicates that the two-planets are trapped in a low-eccentricity 4:3 mean-motion resonance. This is only the third discovered system to be inside a 4:3 resonance, making it very valuable for planet formation and orbital evolution models., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We confirm the planetary nature of TOI-1728b using a combination of ground-based photometry, near-infrared Doppler velocimetry and spectroscopy with the Habitable-zone Planet Finder.TOI-1728 is an old, inactive M0 star with \teff{} $= 3980^{+31}_{-32}$ K, which hosts a transiting super Neptune at an orbital period of $\sim$ 3.49 days. Joint fitting of the radial velocities and TESS and ground-based transits yields a planetary radius of $5.05_{-0.17}^{+0.16}$ R$_{\oplus}$, mass $26.78_{-5.13}^{+5.43}$ M$_{\oplus}$ and eccentricity $0.057_{-0.039}^{+0.054}$. We estimate the stellar properties, and perform a search for He 10830 \AA absorption during the transit of this planet and claim a null detection with an upper limit of 1.1$\%$ with 90\% confidence. A deeper level of He 10830 \AA ~ absorption has been detected in the planet atmosphere of GJ 3470b, a comparable gaseous planet. TOI-1728b is the largest super Neptune -- the intermediate subclass of planets between Neptune and the more massive gas-giant planets -- discovered around an M dwarf. With its relatively large mass and radius, TOI-1728 represents a valuable datapoint in the M-dwarf exoplanet mass-radius diagram, bridging the gap between the lighter Neptune-sized planets and the heavier Jovian planets known to orbit M-dwarfs. With a low bulk density of $1.14_{-0.24}^{+0.26}$ g/cm$^3$, and orbiting a bright host star (J $\sim 9.6$, V $\sim 12.4$), TOI-1728b is also a promising candidate for transmission spectroscopy both from the ground and from space, which can be used to constrain planet formation and evolutionary models., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables: Accepted for publication

NEID is a new extreme precision Doppler spectrometer for the WIYN telescope. It is fiber fed and employs a classical white pupil Echelle configuration. NEID has a fiber aperture of only 0.92” on sky in high-resolution mode, and its tight radial velocity error budget resulted in very stringent stability requirements for the input illumination of the spectrograph optics. Consequently, the demands on the fiber injection are challenging. In this paper, we describe the layout and optical design of the injection module, including a broadband, high image quality relay and a high-performance atmospheric dispersion corrector (ADC) across the bandwidth of 380 – 930 nm.

The Habitable-Zone Planet Finder (HPF) is a stabilized, fiber-fed, NIR spectrometer recently commissioned at the 10m Hobby-Eberly telescope (HET). HPF has been designed and built from the ground up to be capable of discovering low mass planets around mid-late M dwarfs using the Doppler radial velocity technique. Novel apects of the instrument design include mili-kelvin temperature control, careful attending to fiber scrambling, and optics, mounting and detector readout schemes designed to minimize drifts and maximize the radial velocity precision. The optical design of the HPF is an asymmetric white pupil spectrograph layout in a vacuum cryostat cooled to 180 K. The spectrograph uses gold-coated mirrors, a mosaic echelle grating, and a single Teledyne Hawaii-2RG (H2RG) NIR detector with a 1.7-micron cutoff covering parts of the information-rich z, Y and J NIR bands at a spectral resolution of R~55,000. The use of 1.7 micron H2RG enables HPF to operate warmer than most other cryogenic instruments- with the instrument operating at 180K (allowing normal glasses to be used in the camera) and the detector at 120K. We summarize the engineering and commissioning tests on the telescope and the current radial velocity performance of HPF. With data in hand we revisit some of the design trades that went into the instrument design to explore the remaining tall poles in precision RV measurements in the near-infrared. HPF seeks to extend the precision radial velocity technique from the optical to the near-infrared, and in this presentation, we seek to share with the community our experience in this relatively new regime.

Ever more precise radial velocity instruments are needed to observe potential earth-like exoplanet targets that are beyond the range of current generation high resolution echelle spectrographs. Meanwhile, extreme adaptive optics systems at 8 meter class facilities have made ground based observations possible at the diffraction limit. In the field of Doppler spectroscopy, one way to take advantage of these AO capabilities is by the development of ultra-stable single mode fiber fed spectrographs.1 Coupling the light efficiently into SMFs with an extreme adaptive optics system offers significant advantage in removing modal noise, reducing instrument size, enabling superior environmental control and curbing cost. We report the design and challenges in building an ultra-stable spectrograph for the near infrared range. The design wavelength range is 650 to 1500 nm.

High precision Doppler observations of bright stars can be made efficiently with small aperture telescopes. We are constructing a high resolution echelle spectrograph for the new 0.6 m telescope at Central Washington University. The spectrograph is fed by a multimode fiber and operates in the visible wavelength range of 380-670 nm. The spectrograph uses a white pupil design with 100 mm beam diameter and a monolithic R4 echelle grating.

We report on the upgrade of the fiber link of FIES, the high-resolution echelle spectrograph at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT). In order to improve the radial velocity (RV) stability of FIES, we replaced the circular fibers by octagonal and rectangular ones to utilize their superior scrambling performance. Two additional fibers for a planned polarimetry mode were added during the upgrade. The injection optics and the telescope front-end were also replaced. The first on-sky RV measurements indicate that the influence of guiding errors is greatly suppressed, and the overall RV precision of FIES has significantly improved.

Spectroscopic observations are extremely important for determining the composition, structure, and surface gravity of exoplanetary atmospheres. High resolution spectroscopy of the planet itself has only been demonstrated a handful of times. By using advanced high contrast imagers, it is possible to conduct high resolution spectroscopy on imageable exoplanets, after the star light is first suppressed with an advanced coronagraph. Because the planet is spatially separated in the focal plane, a single mode fiber could be used to collect the light from the planet alone, reducing the photon noise by orders of magnitude. In addition, speckle control applied to the location where an exoplanet is known to exist, can be used to preferentially reject the stellar flux from the fiber further. In this paper we will present the plans for conducting high resolution spectroscopic studies of this nature with the combination of SCExAO and IRD in the H-band on the Subaru Telescope. This technique will be critical to the characterization of terrestrial planets on ELTs and future space missions.

We present the software package, Echelle++, an open-source C++ code to simulate realistic raw spectra based on the Zemax model of any spectrograph, with a particular emphasis on cross-dispersed Echelle spectrographs. Echelle++ generates realistic spectra of astronomical and calibration sources, with accurate representation of optical aberrations, the shape of the point-spread function, detector characteristics, and photon noise. It produces high-fidelity spectra fast, a very important feature when testing data reduction pipelines with a large set of different input spectra, when making critical choices about order spacing in the design phase of the instrument, or while aligning the spectrograph during construction. Echelle++ also works with low-resolution, low signal-to-noise, multi-object, IFU, or long-slit spectra, for simulating a wide array of spectrographs. We chose to initially generate our own spectrograph model from the optical prescription in Zemax. Echelle++ can then be used independently, without access to commercial ray tracing software.

The CHIRON optical high-resolution echelle spectrometer was commissioned at the 1.5m telescope at CTIO in 2011. The instrument was designed for high throughput and stability, with the goal of monitoring radial velocities of bright stars with high precision and high cadence for the discovery of low-mass exoplanets. Spectral resolution of R=79,000 is attained when using a slicer with a total (including telescope and detector) efficiency of 6% or higher, while a resolution of R=136,000 is available for bright stars. A fixed spectral range of 415 to 880 nm is covered. The echelle grating is housed in a vacuum enclosure and the instrument temperature is stabilized to +-0.2deg. Stable illumination is provided by an octagonal multimode fiber with excellent light-scrambling properties. An iodine cell is used for wavelength calibration. We describe the main optics, fiber feed, detector, exposure-meter, and other aspects of the instrument, as well as the observing procedure and data reduction., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. In this article, we report all results obtained with a fiber scrambler on the Hamilton spectrograph at Lick Observatory. We demonstrate an improvement in the stability of the instrumental profile using this fiber scrambler. Additionally, we present data obtained with a double scrambler that further improves the stability of the instrument by a factor 2. These results show that errors related to the coupling between the telescope and the spectrograph are the dominant source of instrumental profile variability at Lick Observatory. In particular, we show a strong correlation between instrumental profile variations and hour angle, most likely due to pointing-dependent illumination of the spectrograph optics.

We present recent long-term stability test results of the cryogenic Environmental Control System (ECS) for the Habitable zone Planet Finder (HPF), a near infrared ultra-stable spectrograph operating at 180 Kelvin. Exquisite temperature and pressure stability is required for high precision radial velocity (< 1m=s) instruments, as temperature and pressure variations can easily induce instrumental drifts of several tens-to-hundreds of meters per second. Here we present the results from long-term stability tests performed at the 180K operating temperature of HPF, demonstrating that the HPF ECS is stable at the 0:6mK level over 15-days, and

The Waltz Spectrograph is a fiber-fed high-resolution \'echelle spectrograph for the 72 cm Waltz Telescope at the Landessternwarte, Heidelberg. It uses a 31.6 lines/mm 63.5$^{\circ}$ blaze angle \'echelle grating in white-pupil configuration, providing a spectral resolving power of $R\sim$65,000 covering the spectral range between 450$-$800\,nm in one CCD exposure. A prism is used for cross-dispersion of \'echelle orders. The spectrum is focused by a commercial apochromat onto a 2k$\times$2k CCD detector with 13.5$\mu$m per pixel. An exposure meter will be used to obtain precise photon-weighted midpoints of observations, which will be used in the computation of the barycentric corrections of measured radial velocities. A stabilized, newly designed iodine cell is employed for measuring radial velocities with high precision. Our goal is to reach a radial velocity precision of better than 5 m/s, providing an instrument with sufficient precision and sensitivity for the discovery of giant exoplanets. We are developing a stable and precise spectrograph for the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) named "iLocater." The instrument comprises three principal components: a cross-dispersed echelle spectrograph that operates in the YJ-bands (0.97-1.30 microns), a fiber-injection acquisition camera system, and a wavelength calibration unit. iLocater will deliver high spectral resolution (R~150,000-240,000) measurements that permit novel studies of stellar and substellar objects in the solar neighborhood including extrasolar planets. Unlike previous planet-finding instruments, which are seeing-limited, iLocater operates at the diffraction limit and uses single mode fibers to eliminate the effects of modal noise entirely. By receiving starlight from two 8.4m diameter telescopes that each use "extreme" adaptive optics (AO), iLocater shows promise to overcome the limitations that prevent existing instruments from generating sub-meter-per-second radial velocity (RV) precision. Although optimized for the characterization of low-mass planets using the Doppler technique, iLocater will also advance areas of research that involve crowded fields, line-blanketing, and weak absorption lines., 13 pages, 11 figures

High-order wavefront correction is not only beneficial for high-contrast imaging, but also spectroscopy. The size of a spectrograph can be decoupled from the size of the telescope aperture by moving to the diffraction limit which has strong implications for ELT based instrument design. Here we present the construction and characterization of an extremely efficient single-mode fiber feed behind an extreme adaptive optics system (SCExAO). We show that this feed can indeed be utilized to great success by photonic-based spectrographs. We present metrics to quantify the system performance and some preliminary spectra delivered by the compact spectrograph.

SCExAO is the premier high-contrast imaging platform for the Subaru Telescope. It offers high Strehl ratios at near-IR wavelengths (y-K band) with stable pointing and coronagraphs with extremely small inner working angles, optimized for imaging faint companions very close to the host. In the visible, it has several interferometric imagers which offer polarimetric and spectroscopic capabilities. A recent addition is the RHEA spectrograph enabling spatially resolved high resolution spectroscopy of the surfaces of giant stars, for example. New capabilities on the horizon include post-coronagraphic spectroscopy, spectral differential imaging, nulling interferometry as well as an integral field spectrograph and an MKID array. Here we present the new modules of SCExAO, give an overview of the current commissioning status of each of the modules and present preliminary results.

Insufficient instrument thermo-mechanical stability is one of the many roadblocks for achieving 10cm/s Doppler radial velocity (RV) precision, the precision needed to detect Earth-twins orbiting Solar-type stars. Highly temperature and pressure stabilized spectrographs allow us to better calibrate out instrumental drifts, thereby helping in distinguishing instrumental noise from astrophysical stellar signals. We present the design and performance of the Environmental Control System (ECS) for the Habitable-zone Planet Finder (HPF), a high-resolution (R=50,000) fiber-fed near infrared (NIR) spectrograph for the 10m Hobby Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory. HPF will operate at 180K, driven by the choice of an H2RG NIR detector array with a 1.7micron cutoff. This ECS has demonstrated 0.6mK RMS stability over 15 days at both 180K and 300K, and maintained high quality vacuum (, Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 16 pages, 10 figures. We present radial velocity measurements of two stars observed as part of the Lick Subgiants Planet Search and the Keck N2K survey. Variations in the radial velocities of both stars reveal the presence of Jupiter-mass exoplanets in highly eccentric orbits. HD 16175 is a G0 subgiant from the Lick Subgiants Planet Search, orbited by a planet having a minimum mass of 4.4 M_Jup, in an eccentric (e = 0.59), 2.71 yr orbit. HD 96167 is a G5 subgiant from the N2K ("Next 2000") program at Keck Observatory, orbited by a planet having a minimum mass of 0.68 M_Jup, in an eccentric (e = 0.71), 1.366 yr orbit. Both stars are relatively massive (M_star = 1.3 M_sun) and are very metal rich ([Fe/H] > +0.3). We describe our methods for measuring the stars' radial velocity variations and photometric stability.

The 'holy grail' of exoplanet research today is the detection of an earth-like planet: a rocky planet in the habitable zone around a main-sequence star. Extremely precise Doppler spectroscopy is an indispensable tool to find and characterize earth-like planets; however, to find these planets around solar-type stars, we need nearly one order of magnitude better radial velocity (RV) precision than the best current spectrographs provide. Recent developments in astrophotonics (Bland-Hawthorn & Horton 2006, Bland-Hawthorn et al. 2010) and adaptive optics (AO) enable single mode fiber (SMF) fed, high resolution spectrographs, which can realize the next step in precision. SMF feeds have intrinsic advantages over multimode fiber or slit coupled spectrographs: The intensity distribution at the fiber exit is extremely stable, and as a result the line spread function of a well-designed spectrograph is fully decoupled from input coupling conditions, like guiding or seeing variations (Ihle et al. 2010). Modal noise, a limiting factor in current multimode fiber fed instruments (Baudrand & Walker 2001), can be eliminated by proper design, and the diffraction limited input to the spectrograph allows for very compact instrument designs, which provide excellent optomechanical stability. A SMF is the ideal interface for new, very precise wavelength calibrators, like laser frequency combs (Steinmetz et al. 2008, Osterman et al. 2012), or SMF based Fabry-Perot Etalons (Halverson et al. 2012). At near infrared wavelengths, these technologies are ready to be implemented in on-sky instruments, or already in use. Extreme adaptive optics systems are now in operation across the globe. These systems, capable of high order wavefront correction, deliver Strehl ratios of 90% in the near-infrared. Originally intended for the direct imaging of exoplanets, these systems are often equipped with advanced coronagraphs that suppress the on-axis-star, interferometers to calibrate wavefront errors, and low order wavefront sensors to stabilize any tip/tilt residuals to a degree never seen before. Such systems are well positioned to facilitate the detailed spectroscopic characterization of faint substellar companions at small angular separations from the host star. Additionally, the increased light concentration of the point-spread function and the unprecedented stability create opportunities in other fields of astronomy as well, including spectroscopy. With such Strehl ratios, efficient injection into single-mode fibers or photonic lanterns becomes possible. With diffraction-limited components feeding the instrument, calibrating a spectrograph's line profile becomes considerably easier, as modal noise or imperfect scrambling of the fiber output are no longer an issue. It also opens up the possibility of exploiting photonic technologies for their advanced functionalities, inherent replicability, and small, lightweight footprint to design and build future instrumentation. In this work, we outline how extreme adaptive optics systems will enable advanced photonic and diffraction-limited technologies to be exploited in spectrograph design and the impact it will have on spectroscopy. We illustrate that the precision of an instrument based on these technologies, would be limited by the spectral content and stellar noise on cool stars and capable of achieving a radial velocity precision of several m/s; the level required for detecting an exo-Earth in the HZ of a nearby M-dwarf., 15 pages, 6 figures

The detection of earth-like exoplanets with the Doppler technique requires extreme precision spectrographs stable over timescales of years. The precision requirement of 10 cm/s is equivalent to a relative uncertainty of 3x10 -10 , and, with the typical dispersion of the Echelle spectrographs used for this purpose, translates to a shift of a few nanometers of the spectrum on the detector. Consequently, the instrument must be well understood and optimized in every component and detail. We describe the Yale Doppler diagnostic facility (YDDF), a dedicated bench mounted Echelle spectrograph in our lab at Yale University, which will be used to systematically study the influence of different components at this precision level. The spectrograph bench allows for a flexible optical configuration, high resolution and sampling, and wide spectral coverage. Further, we incorporated a turbulence and guiding simulator to realistically reproduce the situation at the telescope, enabling end-to-end tests of important parameters.

The detection of Earth analogs with radial velocity requires extreme Doppler precision and long term stability. Variations in the illumination of the slit and of the spectrograph optics occur on time scales of seconds and minutes, primarily because of guiding, seeing and focusing. These variations yield differences in the instrumental profile (IP). In order to stabilize the IP, we designed a fiber feed for the Hamilton spectrograph at Lick and for HIRES at Keck. Here, we report all results obtained with these fiber scramblers. We also present the design of a new double scrambler/pupil slicer for HIRES at Keck.
