One such class of objects are Ultra Luminous InfraRed Galaxies (ULIRGs), which are mostly late stage major mergers of gas-rich galaxies. Recently, large-scale (∼100 kpc) radio continuum emission has been detected in a select number of ULIRGs, all of which also harbour powerful Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). This hints at the presence of large-scale radio emission being evidence for nuclear activity. Exploring the origin of this radio emission and its link to nuclear activity requires high sensitivity multi-frequency data. We present such an analysis of the ULIRG Mrk 273. Using the International LOFAR telescope (ILT), we detected spectacular large-scale arcs in this system. This detection includes, for the first time, a giant ∼190 kpc arc in the north. We propose these arcs are fuelled by a low power radio AGN triggered by the merger. We also identified a bright ∼45 kpc radio ridge, which is likely related to the ionised gas nebula in that region. We combined this with high sensitivity data from APERture Tile In Focus (Apertif) and archival data from the Very Large Array (VLA) to explore the spectral properties. The ILT simultaneously allowed us to probe the nucleus at a resolution of ∼0.3″, where we detected three components, and, for the first time, diffuse emission around these components. Combining this with archival high frequency VLA images of the nucleus allowed us to detect absorption in one component, and a steep spectrum radio AGN in another. We then extrapolate from this case study to the importance of investigating the presence of radio emission in more ULIRGs and what it can tell us about the link between mergers and the presence of radio activity. © P. We present neutral hydrogen (HI) and ionized hydrogen (H$��$) observations of ten galaxies out to a redshift of 0.1. The HI observations are from the first epoch (178 hours) of the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES). Our sample is HI biased and consists of ten late-type galaxies with HI masses that range from $1.8\times10^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$ to $1.1\times10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$. We find that although the majority of galaxies show irregularities in the morphology and kinematics, they generally follow the scaling relations found in larger samples. We find that the HI and H$��$ velocities reach the flat part of the rotation curve. We identify the large-scale structure in the nearby CHILES volume using DisPerSE with the spectroscopic catalog from SDSS. We explore the gaseous properties of the galaxies as a function of location in the cosmic web. We also compare the angular momentum vector (spin) of the galaxies to the orientation of the nearest cosmic web filament. Our results show that galaxy spins tend to be aligned with cosmic web filaments and show a hint of a transition mass associated with the spin angle alignment., 24 pages, 25 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We calculate in detail the expected properties of low redshift DLAs under the assumption that they arise in the gaseous disks of galaxies like those in the z≈ 0 population. A sample of 355 nearby galaxies were analysed, for which high quality H I 21-cm emission line maps are available as part of an extensive survey with the westerbork telescope (whisp). We find that expected luminosities, impact parameters between quasars and DLA host galaxies, and metal abundances are in good agreement with the observed properties of DLAs and DLA galaxies. The measured redshift number density of z=0 gas above the DLA limit is dn/dz=0.045± 0.006, which compared to higher z measurements implies that there is no evolution in the co-moving density of DLAs along a line of sight between z˜ 1.5 and z=0, and a decrease of only a factor of two from z˜ 4 to the present time. We conclude that the local galaxy population can explain all properties of low redshift DLAs.

This chapter describes the different constituents of the observable interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies and reviews the relationships between the ISM and the star formation in galaxies. The emphasis is on the component which is most widespread and most easily observable, the neutral atomic hydrogen ( H I). It briefly touches upon effects of the environment and of the interplay between star formation and the ISM (feedback).

The observed rotation curves of disc galaxies, ranging from late-type dwarf galaxies to early-type spirals, can be fit remarkably well simply by scaling up the contributions of the stellar and HI discs. This `baryonic scaling model' can explain the full breadth of observed rotation curves with only two free parameters. For a small fraction of galaxies, in particular early-type spiral galaxies, HI scaling appears to fail in the outer parts, possibly due to observational effects or ionization of the HI. The overall success of the baryonic scaling model suggests that the well-known global coupling between the baryonic mass of a galaxy and its rotation velocity (known as the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation), applies at a more local level as well, and it seems to imply a link between the baryonic mass distribution and the distribution of total mass (including dark matter)., Comment: 10 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Void Galaxy Survey (VGS) is a multi-wavelength program to study similar to 60 void galaxies. Each has been selected from the deepest interior regions of identified voids in the SDSS redshift survey on the basis of a unique geometric technique, with no a prior selection of intrinsic properties of the void galaxies. The project intends to study in detail the gas content, star formation history and stellar content, as well as kinematics and dynamics of void galaxies and their companions in a broad sample of void environments. It involves the HI imaging of the gas distribution in each of the VGS galaxies. Amongst its most tantalizing findings is the possible evidence for cold gas accretion in some of the most interesting objects, amongst which are a polar ring galaxy and a filamentary configuration of void galaxies. Here we shortly describe the scope of the VGS and the results of the full analysis of the pilot sample of 15 void galaxies.

We have completed a pilot survey imaging 15 SDSS selected void galaxies

We investigate the use of MIR PAH bands, continuum and emission lines as probes of star-formation and AGN activity in a sample of 100 'normal' and local (z~0.1) emission-line galaxies. The MIR spectra were obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) as part of the Spitzer-SDSS-GALEX Spectroscopic Survey (SSGSS) which includes multi-wavelength photometry from the UV to the FIR and optical spectroscopy. The continuum and features were extracted using PAHFIT (Smith et al. 2007), a decomposition code which we find to yield PAH equivalent widths up to ~30 times larger than the commonly used spline methods. Despite the lack of extreme objects in our sample (such as strong AGNs, low metallicity galaxies or ULIRGs), we find significant variations in PAH, continuum and emission line properties and systematic trends between these MIR properties and optically derived physical properties such as age, metallicity and radiation field hardness. We revisit the diagnostic diagram relating PAH equivalent widths and [Ne II]12.8micrometers/[O IV]25.9micrometers line ratios and find it to be in much better agreement with the standard optical star-formation/AGN classification than when spline decompositions are used, while also potentially revealing obscured AGNs. The luminosity of individual PAH components, of the continuum, and with poorer statistics, of the neon emission lines and molecular hydrogen lines, are found to be tightly correlated to the total IR luminosity, making individual MIR components good gauges of the total dust emission in SF galaxies. Like the total IR luminosity, these individual components can be used to estimate dust attenuation in the UV and in Halpha lines based on energy balance arguments. In this contribution we review and discuss several aspects of Cosmic Voids, as a background for our void galaxy project (accompanying paper by Stanonik et al.). Voids are a major component of the large scale distribution of matter and galaxies in the Universe. Following a sketch of the general characteristics of void formation and evolution, we describe the influence of the environment on their development and structure and the characteristic hierarchical buildup of the cosmic void population. In order to be able to study the resulting tenuous void substructure and the galaxies populating the interior of voids, we subsequently set out to describe our parameter free tessellation-based watershed void finding technique. It allows us to trace the outline, shape and size of voids in galaxy redshift surveys. The application of this technique enables us to find galaxies in the deepest troughs of the cosmic galaxy distribution, and has formed the basis of our void galaxy program.

We present the analysis of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) spectra of a sample of 92 typical star forming galaxies at 0.03

We have completed a pilot survey imaging 15 SDSS selected void galaxies in HI in local (d=50 to 100 Mpc) voids. This small sample makes up a surprisingly interesting collection of galaxies, consisting of galaxies with asymmetric and perturbed HI disks, previously unidentified companions, and ongoing interactions. One was found to have a polar HI disk with no stellar counterpart. While our small number statistics so far are limiting, results support past findings that most void galaxies are typically late type galaxies with gas rich disks and small scale clustering similar to field galaxies despite their large scale underdense environment., 4 pages, to be published in the proceedings of the conference "Galaxies in Isolation" (12-15 May 2009; Granada, Spain)

We detect a fast outflow of neutral and ionized gas with velocities up to about 1000 km/s from the central region of radio galaxy 3C 293. With optical spectroscopy we locate the bulk of the ionized gas outflow at the position of a bright radio hot-spot in the inner radio jet, about 1 kpc east of the nucleus. Given the presence of large amounts of cold gas and the distorted morphology of the radio jet in this region, we argue that the ISM is pushed out by a severe interaction with the radio plasma. The similarity of the outflow of HI with the ionized gas outflow that we see at the position of the radio hot-spot suggests that despite the high energies involved in the jet-ISM interaction, part of the gas stays, or becomes again, neutral. Recent observations have revealed a class of unusually HI-rich early-type galaxies. By combining observations of their morphology, stellar populations and neutral hydrogen we aim to understand how these galaxies fit into the hierarchical formation paradigm. The unsurpassed sensitivity and resolution of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) will make it possible for the first time to probe the continuum emission of normal star forming galaxies out to the edges of the universe. This opens the possibility for routinely using the radio continuum emission from galaxies for cosmological research as it offers an independent probe of the evolution of the star formation density in the universe. In addition it offers the possibility to detect the first star forming objects and massive black holes. In deep surveys SKA will be able to detect HI in emission out to redshifts of $z \approx 2.5$ and hence be able to trace the conversion of gas into stars over an era where considerable evolution is taking place. Such surveys will be able to uniquely determine the respective importance of merging and accreting gas flows for galaxy formation over this redshift range (i.e. out to when the universe was only one third its present age). It is obvious that only SKA will able to see literally where and how gas is turned into stars. We present new VLA C+D-array HI observations and optical and NIR imaging of the well known interacting system NGC 4038/9, ``The Antennae''. The radio data reveal a wealth of gaseous sub-structure both within the main bodies of the galaxies and along the tidal tails. In agreement with previous HI studies, we find that the northern tail has HI along its outer length, but none along its base. We suggest that the HI at the base of this tail has been ionized by massive stars in the disk of NGC 4038. The gas in the southern tail has a bifurcated structure, with one filament lying along the optical tail and another running parallel to it but with no optical counterpart. The two filaments join just before the location of several star forming regions near the end of the tail. The HI velocity field at the end of the tail is dominated by strong velocity gradients which suggest that at this location the tail is bending away from us. We delineate and examine two regions within the tail previously identified as possible sites of a so-called ``tidal dwarf galaxy'' condensing out of the expanding tidal material. The tail velocity gradients mask any clear kinematic signature of a self-gravitating condensation in this region. A dynamical analysis suggest that there is not enough mass in gas alone for either of these regions to be self-gravitating. Conversely, if they are bound they require a significant contribution to their dynamical mass from evolved stars or dark matter. (Abridged), 26 pages, 12 figures, requires emulateapj.sty. Shells are faint arc-like stellar structures, which have been observed around early type galaxies and are thought to be the result of an interaction. HI gas has recently been detected in shells, a surprising result in view of the theoretical predictions that most of the gas should decouple from stars and fall into the nucleus in such interactions. Here we report the first detection of molecular gas (CO) in shells, found 15kpc away from the center of NGC5128 (CenA), a giant elliptical galaxy that harbors an active nucleus (AGN). The ratio between CO and HI emission in the shells is the same as that found in the central regions, which is unexpected given the metallicity gradient usually observed in galaxies. We propose that the dynamics of the gas can be understood within the standard picture of shell formation if one takes into account that the interstellar medium is clumpy and hence not highly dissipative. The observed metal enrichment could be due to star formation induced by the AGN jet in the shells. We investigate the star formation history and chemical evolution of low surface brightness (LSB) disk galaxies by modelling their observed spectro-photometric and chemical properties using a galactic chemical and photometric evolution model incorporating a detailed metallicity depen dent set of stellar input data. For a large fraction of the LSB galaxies in our sample, observed properties are best explained by models incorporating an exponentially decreasing global star formation rate (SFR) ending at a present-day gas fraction (M_{gas}/(M_{gas}+M_{stars}) = 0.5 for a galaxy age of 14 Gyr. For some galaxies small amplitude star formation bursts are required to explain the contribution of the young (5-50 Myr old) stellar population to the galaxy integrated luminosity. This suggests that star formation has proceeded in a stochastic manner. The presence of an old stellar population in many late-type LSB galaxies suggests that LSB galaxies roughly follow the same evolutionary history as HSB galaxies, except at a much lower rate. In particular, our results imply that LSB galaxies do not form late, nor have a delayed onset of star formation, but simply evolve slowly.

We present results of broad band {BVRI} observations of a sample of galaxies with a low surface brightness (LSB) disk and a bulge. These galaxies are well described as exponential disks and exponential bulges with no preferred value for either scale length or central surface brightness. The median {B} band disk scale length is 12.6 kpc (H_(0) = 75 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}) which is much larger than scale lengths of typical (disk dominated) LSB or high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies. Furthermore, the disk and bulge scale lengths are correlated, suggesting a coupling in the formation. Bulge dominated LSB galaxies are observed to be redder than disk dominated LSB galaxies and their bulge-to-disk ratios are increasing towards redder wavelengths. We find colors that are comparable to or bluer than HSB galaxies of the same morphological types. Bulge dominated LSB galaxies are therefore not faded HSB galaxies with no current star formation. We find that bulge dominated LSB galaxies fit in with the general trends defined by the HSB galaxies. The properties of these bulge dominated LSB galaxies show that LSB galaxies do not just come in two varieties. They cover the entire range in optical and morphological properties between late-type disk dominated LSBs and giant Malin-1-like LSBs. We present measurements of the oxygen abundances in 64 HII regions in 12 LSB galaxies. We find that oxygen abundances are low. No regions with solar abundance have been found, and most have oxygen abundances $\sim 0.5$ to 0.1 solar. The oxygen abundance appears to be constant as a function of radius, supporting the picture of quiescently and sporadically evolving LSB galaxies., Accepted for publication in A&A. 11 pages

We present high resolution (7 arcsec), high sensitivity HI images of the shell galaxy NGC 1210. The neutral hydrogen forms a continous loop which appears in projection as an off-centered ring. Some remarkable aspects are the large HI mass, ( 8 x 10(9) Msun), the sharpness of some of its features (

Neutral hydrogen observations of the nearby, edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 891 reveal the presence of an HI halo extending up to at least 5 kpc from the plane. This halo gas appears to rotate 25 to 100 km/s more slowly than the gas in the plane. If this velocity difference is due to the gradient in the gravitational potential, then it may serve to discriminate between disk and spheroidal mass models. The classic picture of a large outer flare in the HI layer of NGC 891 may no longer be valid. A correlation is seen between the distributions of HI, Halpha and radio continuum emission, which supports, in accordance with galactic fountain models, the picture of a substantial disk-halo circulation related to the star formation activity in the disk of NGC 891. There is now also clear evidence for the presence of a rapidly rotating (v_rot ~ 230 km/s) disk or ring of HI in the central part of NGC 891., 12 pages, LaTeX, plus 5 postscript figures. One of the key science drivers for the development of the SKA is to observe the neutral hydrogen, HI, in galaxies as a means to probe galaxy evolution across a range of environments over cosmic time. Over the past decade, much progress has been made in theoretical simulations and observations of HI in galaxies. However, recent HI surveys on both single dish radio telescopes and interferometers, while providing detailed information on global HI properties, the dark matter distribution in galaxies, as well as insight into the relationship between star formation and the interstellar medium, have been limited to the local universe. Ongoing and upcoming HI surveys on SKA pathfinder instruments will extend these measurements beyond the local universe to intermediate redshifts with long observing programmes. We present here an overview of the HI science which will be possible with the increased capabilities of the SKA and which will build upon the expected increase in knowledge of HI in and around galaxies obtained with the SKA pathfinder surveys. With the SKA1 the greatest improvement over our current measurements is the capability to image galaxies at reasonable linear resolution and good column density sensitivity to much higher redshifts (0.2 < z < 1.7). So one will not only be able to increase the number of detections to study the evolution of the HI mass function, but also have the sensitivity and resolution to study inflows and outflows to and from galaxies and the kinematics of the gas within and around galaxies as a function of environment and cosmic time out to previously unexplored depths. The increased sensitivity of SKA2 will allow us to image Milky Way-size galaxies out to redshifts of z=1 and will provide the data required for a comprehensive picture of the HI content of galaxies back to z~2 when the cosmic star formation rate density was at its peak., 25 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. Great strides have been made in the last two decades in determining how galaxies evolve from their initial dark matter seeds to the complex structures we observe at z=0. The role of mergers has been documented through both observations and simulations, numerous satellites that may represent these initial dark matter seeds have been discovered in the Local Group, high redshift galaxies have been revealed with monstrous star formation rates, and the gaseous cosmic web has been mapped through absorption line experiments. Despite these efforts, the dark matter simulations that include baryons are still unable to accurately reproduce galaxies. One of the major problems is our incomplete understanding of how a galaxy accretes its baryons and subsequently forms stars. Galaxy formation simulations have been unable to accurately represent the required gas physics on cosmological timescales, and observations have only just begun to detect the star formation fuel over a range of redshifts and environments. How galaxies obtain gas and subsequently form stars is a major unsolved, yet tractable problem in contemporary extragalactic astrophysics. Supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies can cycle through periods of activity and quiescence. Characterising the duty cycle of active galactic nuclei is crucial for understanding the impact of the energy they release on the host galaxy. For radio AGN, this can be done by identifying dying (remnant) and restarted radio galaxies from their radio spectral properties. Using the combination of images at 1400 MHz produced by Apertif, the new phased-array feed receiver installed on the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, and images at 150 MHz provided by LOFAR, we have derived resolved spectral index images (at a resolution of ~15 arcsec) for all the sources within ~6 deg^2 area of the Lockman Hole region. We were able to select 15 extended radio sources with emission (partly or entirely) characterised by extremely steep spectral indices (steeper than 1.2). These objects represent radio sources in the remnant or the restarted phases of their life cycle. Our findings suggest this cycle to be relatively fast. They also show a variety of properties relevant for modelling the evolution of radio galaxies. For example, the restarted activity can occur while the remnant structure from a previous phase of activity is still visible. This provides constraints on the duration of the 'off' (dying) phase. In extended remnants with ultra-steep spectra at low frequencies, the activity likely stopped a few hundred megayears ago, and they correspond to the older tail of the age distribution of radio galaxies, in agreement with simulations of radio source evolution. We find remnant radio sources with a variety of structures (from double-lobed to amorphous), suggesting different types of progenitors. The present work sets the stage for exploiting low-frequency spectral index studies of extended sources by taking advantage of the large areas common to the LOFAR and the Apertif surveys., Accepted for publication in A&A.
