Search

Young massive clusters (YMCs) are the most compact, high-mass stellar systems still forming at the present day. The precursor clouds to such systems are, however, rare due to their large initial gas mass reservoirs and rapid dispersal timescales due to stellar feedback. Nonetheless, unlike their high-z counterparts, these precursors are resolvable down to the sites of individually forming stars, and hence represent the ideal environments in which to test the current theories of star and cluster formation. Using high angular resolution (1$^{\prime\prime}$ / 0.05pc) and sensitivity ALMA observations of two YMC progenitor clouds in the Galactic Centre, we have identified a suite of molecular line transitions -- e.g. c-C$_{3}$H$_{2} $($7-6$) -- that are believed to be optically thin, and reliably trace the gas structure in the highest density gas on star-forming core scales. We conduct a virial analysis of the identified core and proto-cluster regions, and show that half of the cores (5/10) and both proto-clusters are unstable to gravitational collapse. This is the first kinematic evidence of global gravitational collapse in YMC precursor clouds at such an early evolutionary stage. The implications are that if these clouds are to form YMCs, then they likely do so via the "conveyor-belt" mode, whereby stars continually form within dispersed dense gas cores as the cloud undergoes global gravitational collapse. Using molecular line data from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz Survey (MALT90), we have searched the optically thick \hcop\, line for the "blue asymmetry" spectroscopic signature of infall motion in a large sample of high-mass, dense molecular clumps observed to be at different evolutionary stages of star cluster formation according to their mid-infrared appearance. To quantify the degree of the line asymmetry, we measure the asymmetry parameter $A = {{I_{blue}-I_{red}}\over{I_{blue}+I_{red}}}$, the fraction of the integrated intensity that lies to the blueshifted side of the systemic velocity determined from the optically thin tracer \nthp. For a sample of 1,093 sources, both the mean and median of $A$ are positive ($A = 0.083\pm0.010$ and $0.065\pm0.009$, respectively) with high statistical significance, and a majority of sources (a fraction of $0.607 \pm 0.015$ of the sample) show positive values of A, indicating a preponderance of blue-asymmetric profiles over red-asymmetric profiles. Two other measures, the local slope of the line at the systemic velocity and the $\delta v$ parameter of \citet{Mardones1997}, also show an overall blue asymmetry for the sample, but with smaller statistical significance. This blue asymmetry indicates that these high-mass clumps are predominantly undergoing gravitational collapse. The blue asymmetry is larger ($A \sim 0.12$) for the earliest evolutionary stages (quiescent, protostellar and compact H II region) than for the later H II region ($A \sim 0.06$) and PDR ($A \sim 0$) classifications., Comment: 35 pages, 16 figures

Star formation in the Galactic disc is primarily controlled by gravity, turbulence, and magnetic fields. It is not clear that this also applies to star formation near the Galactic Centre. Here we determine the turbulence and star formation in the CMZ cloud G0.253+0.016. Using maps of 3mm dust emission and HNCO intensity-weighted velocity obtained with ALMA, we measure the volume-density variance $\sigma_{\rho/\rho_0} = 1.3 \pm 0.5$ and turbulent Mach number $\mathcal{M} = 11 \pm 3$. Combining these with turbulence simulations to constrain the plasma $\beta = 0.34 \pm 0.35$, we reconstruct the turbulence driving parameter $b = 0.22 \pm 0.12$ in G0.253+0.016. This low value of $b$ indicates solenoidal (divergence-free) driving of the turbulence in G0.253+0.016. By contrast, typical clouds in the Milky Way disc and spiral arms have a significant compressive (curl-free) driving component ($b > 0.4$). Recent surveys of dust continuum emission at sub-mm wavelengths have shown that filamentary molecular clouds are ubiquitous along the Galactic plane. These structures are inhomogeneous, with over-densities that are sometimes associated with infrared emission and active of star formation. To investigate the connection between filaments and star formation, requires an understanding of the processes that lead to the fragmentation of filaments and a determination of the physical properties of the over-densities (clumps). In this paper, we present a multi-wavelength study of five filamentary molecular clouds, containing several clumps in different evolutionary stages of star formation. We analyse the fragmentation of the filaments and derive the physical properties of their clumps. We find that the clumps in all filaments have a characteristic spacing consistent with the prediction of the `sausage' instability theory, regardless of the complex morphology of the filaments or their evolutionary stage. We also find that most clumps have sufficient mass and density to form high-mass stars, supporting the idea that high-mass stars and clusters form within filaments., 14 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

The formation environment of stars in massive stellar clusters is similar to the environment of stars forming in galaxies at a redshift of 1 - 3, at the peak star formation rate density of the Universe. As massive clusters are still forming at the present day at a fraction of the distance to high-redshift galaxies they offer an opportunity to understand the processes controlling star formation and feedback in conditions similar to those in which most stars in the Universe formed. Here we describe a system of massive clusters and their progenitor gas clouds in the centre of the Milky Way, and outline how detailed observations of this system may be able to: (i) help answer some of the fundamental open questions in star formation and (ii) quantify how stellar feedback couples to the surrounding interstellar medium in this high-pressure, high-redshift analogue environment., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, to appear in proceedings of The 6th Zermatt ISM Symposium: Conditions and Impact of Star Formation From Lab to Space, eds. The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) has revealed many TeV (10 12 eV) gamma-ray sources along the Galactic Plane and around 30 percent of these sources remain unidentified. The morphology and dynamics of dense gas coincident and surrounding the gamma-ray emission can provide clues about the nature of the TeV emission. The H2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) undertaken with the Mopra radio telescope, includes several dense gas tracers, such as NH3 (n,n) transitions and HC3N (3-2), star formation tracers including H2O masers, and radio recombination lines which trace ionised gas. A search for dense gas, traced by NH3 (1,1) emission seen in HOPS and additional observations, towards Galactic TeV sources has been undertaken. Of the 49 Galactic TeV sources covered by 12 mm observations, NH3 (1,1) is detected towards or adjacent to 38 of them. Dense gas counterparts have been detected near several unidentified Galactic TeV sources which display morphology pointing to a hadronic origin to the TeV gamma-rays. The dense gas detected towards some TeV sources displays unusual emission characteristics, including very broad linewidths and enhanced ortho-to-para NH3 abundance ratios towards HESS J1745-303 and HESS J1801-233, which reflects previous shock activity within the gas., Comment: 24 pages, 26 figures

Recent dust continuum surveys have shown that filamentary structures are ubiquitous along the Galactic plane. While the study of their global properties has gained momentum recently, we are still far from fully understanding their origin and stability. Theories invoking magnetic field have been formulated to help explain the stability of filaments; however, observations are needed to test their predictions. In this paper, we investigate the structure and radial equilibrium of five filamentary molecular clouds with the aim of determining the role that magnetic field may play. To do this, we use continuum and molecular line observations to obtain their physical properties (e.g. mass, temperature and pressure). We find that the filaments have lower lineal masses compared to their lineal virial masses. Their virial parameters and shape of their dust continuum emission suggests that these filaments may be confined by a toroidal dominated magnetic field.

Star formation is primarily controlled by the interplay between gravity, turbulence, and magnetic fields. However, the turbulence and magnetic fields in molecular clouds near the Galactic Center may differ substantially from spiral-arm clouds. Here we determine the physical parameters of the central molecular zone (CMZ) cloud G0.253+0.016, its turbulence, magnetic field and filamentary structure. Using column-density maps based on dust-continuum emission observations with ALMA+Herschel, we identify filaments and show that at least one dense core is located along them. We measure the filament width W_fil=0.17$\pm$0.08pc and the sonic scale {\lambda}_sonic=0.15$\pm$0.11pc of the turbulence, and find W_fil~{\lambda}_sonic. A strong velocity gradient is seen in the HNCO intensity-weighted velocity maps obtained with ALMA+Mopra, which is likely caused by large-scale shearing of G0.253+0.016, producing a wide double-peaked velocity PDF. After subtracting the gradient to isolate the turbulent motions, we find a nearly Gaussian velocity PDF typical for turbulence. We measure the total and turbulent velocity dispersion, 8.8$\pm$0.2km/s and 3.9$\pm$0.1km/s, respectively. Using magnetohydrodynamical simulations, we find that G0.253+0.016's turbulent magnetic field B_turb=130$\pm$50$\mu$G is only ~1/10 of the ordered field component. Combining these measurements, we reconstruct the dominant turbulence driving mode in G0.253+0.016 and find a driving parameter b=0.22$\pm$0.12, indicating solenoidal (divergence-free) driving. We compare this to spiral-arm clouds, which typically have a significant compressive (curl-free) driving component (b>0.4). Motivated by previous reports of strong shearing motions in the CMZ, we speculate that shear causes the solenoidal driving in G0.253+0.016 and show that this reduces the star formation rate (SFR) by a factor of 6.9 compared to typical nearby clouds., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 1 table containing new Brick parameters; accepted by ApJ

In the Milky Way there are thousands of stellar clusters each harboring from a hundred to a million stars. Although clusters are common, the initial conditions of cluster formation are still not well understood. To determine the processes involved in the formation and evolution of clusters it is key to determine the global properties of cluster-forming clumps in their earliest stages of evolution. Here, we present the physical properties of 1,244 clumps identified from the MALT90 survey. Using the dust temperature of the clumps as a proxy for evolution we determined how the clump properties change at different evolutionary stages. We find that less-evolved clumps exhibiting dust temperatures lower than 20 K have higher densities and are more gravitationally bound than more-evolved clumps with higher dust temperatures. We also identified a sample of clumps in a very early stage of evolution, thus potential candidates for high-mass star-forming clumps. Only one clump in our sample has physical properties consistent with a young massive cluster progenitor, reinforcing the fact that massive proto-clusters are very rare in the Galaxy.

Using spectral-line observations of HNCO, N2H+, and HNC, we investigate the kinematics of dense gas in the central ~250 pc of the Galaxy. We present SCOUSE (Semi-automated multi-COmponent Universal Spectral-line fitting Engine), a line fitting algorithm designed to analyse large volumes of spectral-line data efficiently and systematically. Unlike techniques which do not account for complex line profiles, SCOUSE accurately describes the {l, b, v_LSR} distribution of CMZ gas, which is asymmetric about Sgr A* in both position and velocity. Velocity dispersions range from 2.6 km/s28. The gas is distributed throughout several "streams", with projected lengths ~100-250 pc. We link the streams to individual clouds and sub-regions, including Sgr C, the 20 and 50 km/s clouds, the dust ridge, and Sgr B2. Shell-like emission features can be explained by the projection of independent molecular clouds in Sgr C and the newly identified conical profile of Sgr B2 in {l ,b, v_LSR} space. These features have previously invoked supernova-driven shells and cloud-cloud collisions as explanations. We instead caution against structure identification in velocity-integrated emission maps. Three geometries describing the 3-D structure of the CMZ are investigated: i) two spiral arms; ii) a closed elliptical orbit; iii) an open stream. While two spiral arms and an open stream qualitatively reproduce the gas distribution, the most recent parameterisation of the closed elliptical orbit does not. Finally, we discuss how proper motion measurements of masers can distinguish between these geometries, and suggest that this effort should be focused on the 20 km/s and 50 km/s clouds and Sgr C., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 30 pages (including appendices), 22 figures, 3 tables. The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey has identified a large sample of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) and ultra compact (UC) HII regions from a sample of ~2000 MSX and 2MASS colour selected sources. Using a recent catalogue of molecular clouds derived from the Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey (GRS), and by applying a Galactic scaleheight cut off of 120 pc, we solve the distance ambiguity for RMS sources located within 18\degr 54\degr. These two steps yield kinematic distances to 291 sources out of a possible 326 located within the GRS longitude range. Combining distances and integrated fluxes derived from spectral energy distributions, we estimate luminosities to these sources and find that > 90% are indicative of the presence of a massive star. We find the completeness limit of our sample is ~10^4 Lsun, which corresponds to a zero age main sequence (ZAMS) star with a mass of ~12 Msun. Selecting only these sources, we construct a complete sample of 196 sources. Comparing the properties of the sample of young massive stars with the general population, we find the RMS-clouds are generally larger, more massive, and more turbulent. We examine the distribution of this sub-sample with respect to the location of the spiral arms and the Galactic bar and find them to be spatially correlated. We identify three significant peaks in the source surface density at Galactocentric radii of approximately 4, 6 and 8 kpc, which correspond to the proposed positions of the Scutum, Sagittarius and Perseus spiral arms, respectively. Fitting a scale height to the data we obtain an average value of ~29+-0.5 pc, which agrees well with other reported values in the literature, however, we note a dependence of the scale height on galactocentric radius with it increases from 30 pc to 45 pc between 2.5 and 8.5 kpc.

Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are cold, dense molecular clouds identified as extinction features against the bright mid-infrared Galactic background. Our recent 1.2 mm continuum emission survey of IRDCs reveals many compact (

We derive the molecular properties for a sample of 301 Galactic HII regions including 123 ultra compact (UC), 105 compact, and 73 diffuse nebulae. We analyze all sources within the BU-FCRAO Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) of 13CO emission known to be HII regions based upon the presence of radio continuum and cm-wavelength radio recombination line emission. Unlike all previous large area coverage 13CO surveys, the GRS is fully sampled in angle and yet covers ~75 square degrees of the Inner Galaxy. The angular resolution of the GRS 46" allows us to associate molecular gas with HII regions without ambiguity and to investigate the physical properties of this molecular gas. We find clear CO/HII morphological associations in position and velocity for ~80% of the nebular sample. Compact HII region molecular gas clouds are on average larger than UC clouds: 2.2' compared to 1.7'. Compact and UC HII regions have very similar molecular properties, with ~5K line intensities and ~4 km/s line widths. The diffuse HII region molecular gas has lower line intensities, ~3K, and smaller line widths, ~3.5 km/s. These latter characteristics are similar to those found for quiescent molecular clouds in the GRS. Our sample nebulae thus show evidence for an evolutionary sequence wherein small, dense molecular gas clumps associated with UC HII regions grow into older compact nebulae and finally fragment and dissipate into large, diffuse nebulae., Comment: Accepted to ApJS. CS (2-1) measurements toward a large sample of fourth Galactic quadrant infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) were made with the Australia Telescope National Facility Mopra telescope in order to establish their kinematic distances and Galactic distribution. Due to its large critical density, CS unambiguously separates the dense IRDCs from more diffuse giant molecular clouds. The fourth-quadrant IRDCs show a pronounced peak in their radial galactocentric distribution at R = 6 kpc. The first-quadrant IRDC distribution (traced by 13CO emission) also shows a peak, but at a galactocentric radius of R = 5 kpc rather than 6 kpc. This disparity in the peak galactocentric radius suggests that IRDCs trace a spiral arm which lies closer to the Sun in the fourth quadrant. Indeed, the deduced IRDC distribution matches the location of the Scutum-Centaurus arm in Milky Way models dominated by two spiral arms. Since, in external galaxies, OB stars form primarily in spiral arms, the association of IRDCs with a Milky Way spiral arm supports the idea that high-mass stars form in IRDCs. The first-quadrant IRDC distribution also reveals a second peak near the solar circle, possibly due to the fact that 13CO could trace somewhat lower density IRDCs. The reliability of the MSX IRDC catalog by Simon and coworkers is estimated by using the CS detection rate of IRDC candidates. The overall reliability is at least 58%, and increases to near 100% for high contrasts, Galactic longitudes within ~30° of the Galactic center, and large mid-IR backgrounds. A significant fraction of our IRDC sample (14%) showed two CS velocity components, which probably represent two distinct IRDCs along the same line of sight.

In this paper we present the results of a systematic investigation of an entire population of starless dust cores within a single molecular cloud. Analysis of extinction data shows the cores to be dense objects characterized by a narrow range of density. Analysis of C18O and NH3 molecular-line observations reveals very narrow lines. The non-thermal velocity dispersions measured in both these tracers are found to be subsonic for the large majority of the cores and show no correlation with core mass (or size). Thermal pressure is thus the dominate source of internal gas pressure and support for most of the core population. The total internal gas pressures of the cores are found to be roughly independent of core mass over the entire range of the core mass function (CMF) indicating that the cores are in pressure equilibrium with an external source of pressure. This external pressure is most likely provided by the weight of the surrounding Pipe cloud within which the cores are embedded. Most of the cores appear to be pressure confined, gravitationally unbound entities whose nature, structure and future evolution are determined by only a few physical factors which include self-gravity, the fundamental processes of thermal physics and the simple requirement of pressure equilibrium with the surrounding environment. The observed core properties likely constitute the initial conditions for star formation in dense gas. The entire core population is found to be characterized by a single critical Bonnor-Ebert mass. This mass coincides with the characteristic mass of the Pipe CMF indicating that most cores formed in the cloud are near critical stability. This suggests that the mass function of cores (and the IMF) has its origin in the physical process of thermal fragmentation in a pressurized medium., To appear in the Astrophysical Journal

Using 13CO J = 1 ? 0 molecular line emission from the Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey (BU-FCRAO GRS), we have established kinematic distances to 313 infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) by matching the morphology of the molecular line emission in distinct velocity channels to their mid-infrared extinction. The Galactic distribution of IRDCs shows an enhancement toward the Galaxy's most massive and active star-forming structure, the so-called 5 kpc ring. IRDCs have typical sizes of ~5 pc, peak column densities of ~1022 cm-2, LTE masses of ~5 ? 103 M?, and volume-averaged H2 densities of ~2 ? 103 cm-3. The similarity of these properties to those of molecular clumps associated with active star formation suggests that IRDCs represent the densest clumps within giant molecular clouds where clusters may eventually form.

We present a survey of the 616-523 H2O maser transition toward a sample of 140 compact cores in infrared dark clouds using the Very Large Array. Strong (>1 Jy) H2O maser emission was found associated with 17 cores, indicative of star formation in these cores. We infer that the cores with H2O masers have embedded protostars. Cores associated with maser emission have masses of 12 to 2 × 103 M☉, similar to the mass range in the entire sample. The H2O maser detection rate (12%) toward the compact, cold cores is much lower than that toward high-mass protostellar objects and ultracompact H II regions. The detection rate of H2O masers is significantly higher for higher mass cores than for lower mass cores. We suggest that some of the most massive infrared dark cloud cores without H2O maser emission are at an evolutionary stage earlier than the protostellar phases. They are prime candidates for high-mass starless cores.

Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) are dense molecular clouds seen as extinction features against the bright mid-infrared Galactic background. Millimeter continuum maps toward 38 IRDCs reveal extended cold dust emission to be associated with each of the IRDCs. IRDCs range in morphology from filamentary to compact and have masses of 120 to 16,000 Msun, with a median mass of ~940 Msun. We use 8.3 um mid-infrared images acquired with the Midcourse Space Experiment satellite to identify and catalog Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) in the first and fourth quadrants of the Galactic plane. Because IRDCs are seen as dark extinction features against the diffuse Galactic infrared background, we identify them by first determining a model background from the 8.3 um images and then searching for regions of high decremental contrast with respect to this background. IRDC candidates in our catalog are defined by contiguous regions bounded by closed contours of a 2 sigma decremental contrast threshold. Although most of the identified IRDCs are actual cold, dark clouds, some as yet unknown fraction may be spurious identifications. For large, high contrast clouds, we estimate the reliability to be 82%. Low contrast clouds should have lower reliabilities. Verification of the reality of individual clouds will require additional data. We identify 10,931 candidate infrared dark clouds. For each IRDC, we also catalog cores. These cores, defined as localized regions with at least 40% higher extinction than the cloud's average extinction, are found by iteratively fitting 2-dimensional elliptical Gaussians to the contrast peaks. We identify 12,774 cores. The catalog contains the position, angular size, orientation, area, peak contrast, peak contrast signal-to-noise, and integrated contrast of the candidate IRDCs and their cores. The distribution of IRDCs closely follows the Galactic diffuse mid-infrared background and peaks toward prominent star forming regions, spiral arm tangents, and the so-called 5 kpc Galactic molecular ring.

The Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey is a new survey of Galactic 13CO (1-0) emission. The survey used the SEQUOIA multi pixel array on the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory 14 m telescope to cover a longitude range of l = 18 deg-55.7 deg and a latitude range of |b| < 1 deg, a total of 75.4 square degrees. Using both position-switching and On-The-Fly mapping modes, we achieved an angular sampling of 22 arcsec, better than half of the telescope's 46 arcsec angular resolution. The survey's velocity coverage is -5 to 135 km/s for Galactic longitudes l 40 deg. At the velocity resolution of 0.21 km/s, the typical rms sensitivity is sigma(TA*)~0.13 K. The survey comprises a total of 1,993,522 spectra. We show integrated intensity images (zeroth moment maps), channel maps, position-velocity diagrams, and an average spectrum of the completed survey dataset. We also discuss the telescope and instrumental parameters, the observing modes, the data reduction processes, and the emission and noise characteristics of the dataset. Examination of early, in-orbit checkout (IOC) images of a portion of the Galactic plane obtained by the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope revealed the presence of an extended emission nebula with internal structure. The Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE) data show this nebula, located at l � 42 � and b � 0N5, contains bright point sources and two nonstellar regions. Ancillary data sets were used to help reveal the nature of this nebula and its exciting objects. In particular, 13 CO J ¼ 1 ! 0 line emission mapped by the Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) shows molecular gas associated with the infrared nebula. The 13 CO radial velocity yields a far-kinematic distance of 11.1 kpc to the nebula, since there is no evidence for H i self-absorption. At 11.1 kpc, the far-infrared luminosity of the nebula is 4:8;10 4 L� , and the mass of its molecular cloud is 1:1;10 4 M� . The spectral energy distribution rises steeply from 2.2 to 100 � m with an absorption feature at 10 � m, exhibiting the shape of a late Class 0 young stellar object (YSO). The radio continuum flux observed toward the nebula is consistent with the free-free emission from one or more massive YSOs (MYSOs) with spectral types in the range O9 to B0. This analysis demonstrates one technique the GLIMPSE team will use for revealing thousands of Galactic star formation regions.

To better understand the environment surrounding CO emission clumps in the Keyhole Nebula, we have made images of the region in H2 1-0 S(1) (2.122 um) emission and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at 3.29 um. Our results show that the H2 and PAH emission regions are morphologically similar, existing as several clumps, all of which correspond to CO emission clumps and dark optical features. The emission confirms the existence of photodissociation regions (PDRs) on the surface of the clumps. By comparing the velocity range of the CO emission with the optical appearance of the H2 and PAH emission, we present a model of the Keyhole Nebula in which the most negative velocity clumps are in front of the ionization region, the clumps at intermediate velocities are in it, and those which have the least negative velocities are at the far side. It may be that these clumps, which appear to have been swept up from molecular gas by the stellar winds from eta Car, are now being over-run by the ionization region and forming PDRs on their surfaces. These clumps comprise the last remnants of the ambient molecular cloud around eta Car.

Using molecular-line data from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz Survey (MALT90), we have estimated kinematic distances to 1905 molecular clumps identified in the ATLASGAL 870 μm continuum survey over the longitude range 295° < l < 350°. The clump velocities were determined using a flux-weighted average of the velocities obtained from Gaussian fits to the HCO+, HNC, and N2H+ (1–0) transitions. The near/far kinematic distance ambiguity was addressed by searching for the presence or absence of absorption or self-absorption features in 21 cm atomic hydrogen spectra from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. Our algorithm provides an estimation of the reliability of the ambiguity resolution. The Galactic distribution of the clumps indicates positions where the clumps are bunched together, and these locations probably trace the locations of spiral arms. Several clumps fall at the predicted location of the far side of the Scutum–Centaurus arm. Moreover, a number of clumps with positive radial velocities are unambiguously located on the far side of the Milky Way at galactocentric radii beyond the solar circle. The measurement of these kinematic distances, in combination with continuum or molecular-line data, now enables the determination of fundamental parameters such as mass, size, and luminosity for each clump.

We have used deep near-infrared observations with adaptive optics to discover a distributed population of low-mass protostars within the filamentary Infrared Dark Cloud G34.43+00.24. We use maps of dust emission at multiple wavelengths to determine the column density structure of the cloud. In combination with an empirically-verified model of the magnitude distribution of background stars, this column density map allows us to reliably determine overdensities of red sources that are due to embedded protostars in the cloud. We also identify protostars through their extended emission in K-band which comes from excited H2 in protostellar outflows or reflection nebulosity. We find a population of distributed low-mass protostars, suggesting that low-mass protostars may form earlier than, or contemporaneously with, high-mass protostars in such a filament. The low-mass protostellar population may also produce the narrow linewidth SiO emission observed in some clouds without high-mass protostars. Finally, we use a molecular line map of the cloud to determine the virial parameter per unit length along the filament and find that the highest mass protostars form in the most bound portion of the filament, as suggested by theoretical models., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures. (abridged) [...] Methods: In a continued study of the molecular core population of the Pipe Nebula, we present a molecular-line survey of 52 cores. Previous research has shown a variety of different chemical evolutionary stages among the cores. Using the Mopra radio telescope, we observed the ground rotational transitions of HCO+, H13CO+, HCN, H13CN, HNC, and N2H+. These data are complemented with near-infrared extinction maps to constrain the column densities, effective dust temperatures derived from Herschel data, and NH3-based gas kinetic temperatures. Results: The target cores are located across the nebula, span visual extinctions between 5 and 67 mag, and effective dust temperatures (averaged along the lines of sight) between 13 and 19 K. The extinction-normalized integrated line intensities, a proxy for the abundance in constant excitation conditions of optically thin lines, vary within an order of magnitude for a given molecule. The effective dust temperatures and gas kinetic temperatures are correlated, but the effective dust temperatures are consistently higher than the gas kinetic temperatures. Combining the molecular line and temperature data, we find that N2H+ is only detected toward the coldest and densest cores while other lines show no correlation with these core properties. Conclusions: Within this large sample, N2H+ is the only species to exclusively trace the coldest and densest cores, in agreement with chemical considerations. In contrast, the common high-density tracers HCN and HNC are present in a majority of cores, demonstrating the utility of these molecules to characterize cores over a large range of extinctions. The correlation between the effective dust temperatures and the gas kinetic temperatures suggests that the former are dominated by dust that is both dense and thermodynamically coupled to the dense gas traced by NH3. We review the formation and early evolution of the most massive and dense young stellar clusters, focusing on the role they can play in our understanding of star and planet formation as a whole. Young massive cluster (YMC) progenitor clouds in the Galactic Center can accumulate to a high enough density without forming stars that the initial protostellar densities are close to the final stellar density. For this to hold in the disk, the time scale to accumulate the gas to such high densities must be much shorter than the star formation timescale. Otherwise the gas begins forming stars while it is being accumulated to high density. The distinction between the formation regimes in the two environments is consistent with the predictions of environmentally-dependent density thresholds for star formation. This implies that stars in YMCs of similar total mass and radius can have formed at widely different initial protostellar densities. The fact that no systematic variations in fundamental properties are observed between YMCs in the disk and Galactic Center suggests stellar mass assembly is not strongly affected by the initial protostellar density. We review recent theoretical advances and summarize the debate on three key open questions: the initial (proto)stellar distribution, infant (im)mortality and age spreads within YMCs. We conclude: the initial protostellar distribution is likely hierarchical; YMCs likely experienced a formation history that was dominated by gas exhaustion rather than gas expulsion; YMCs are dynamically stable from a young age; and YMCs have age spreads much smaller than their mean age. Finally, we show that it is plausible that metal-rich globular clusters may have formed in a similar way to YMCs in nearby galaxies. In summary, the study of YMC formation bridges star/planet formation in the solar neighborhood to the oldest structures in the local Universe. [abridged]

A survey of the Milky Way disk and the Magellanic System at the wavelengths of the 21-cm atomic hydrogen (HI) line and three 18-cm lines of the OH molecule will be carried out with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. The survey will study the distribution of HI emission and absorption with unprecedented angular and velocity resolution, as well as molecular line thermal emission, absorption, and maser lines. The area to be covered includes the Galactic plane (|b|< 10deg) at all declinations south of delta = +40deg, spanning longitudes 167deg through 360deg to 79deg at b=0deg, plus the entire area of the Magellanic Stream and Clouds, a total of 13,020 square degrees. The brightness temperature sensitivity will be very good, typically sigma_T ~ 1 K at resolution 30arcsec and 1 km/s. The survey has a wide spectrum of scientific goals, from studies of galaxy evolution to star formation, with particular contributions to understanding stellar wind kinematics, the thermal phases of the interstellar medium, the interaction between gas in the disk and halo, and the dynamical and thermal states of gas at various positions along the Magellanic Stream., 45 pages, 8 figures, Pub. Super star clusters are the end product of star formation under the most extreme conditions. As such, studying how their final stellar populations are assembled from their natal progenitor gas clouds can provide strong constraints on star formation theories. An obvious place to look for the initial conditions of such extreme stellar clusters are gas clouds of comparable mass and density, with no star formation activity. We present a method to identify such progenitor gas clouds and demonstrate the technique for the gas in the inner few hundred pc of our Galaxy. The method highlights three clouds in the region with similar global physical properties to the previously identified extreme cloud, G0.253+0.016, as potential young massive cluster (YMC) precursors. The fact that four potential YMC progenitor clouds have been identified in the inner 100 pc of the Galaxy, but no clouds with similar properties have been found in the whole first quadrant despite extensive observational efforts, has implications for cluster formation/destruction rates across the Galaxy. We put forward a scenario to explain how such dense gas clouds can arise in the Galactic centre environment, in which YMC formation is triggered by gas streams passing close to the minimum of the global Galactic gravitational potential at the location of the central supermassive black hole, Sgr A*. H.E.S.S. has revealed many new TeV γ-ray sources along the Galactic Plane. Many of these sources do not have identified counterparts at other wavelengths. The morphology and dynamics of dense gas can provide insight into the conditions of the interstellar medium coincident and surrounding the γ-ray emission, which can also provide clues about the nature of the TeV emission. The H2O Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) undertaken with the Mopra radio telescope, includes several dense gas tracers, such as NH3 (n,n) transitions and HC3N (3-2), star formation tracers including H2O masers, and radio recombination lines which trace ionised gas. The HOPS data and additional observations undertaken by the authors have been used to search for dense gas toward Galactic TeV sources. Preliminary results towards a selected sample of three TeV sources are presented here.

We report molecular line observations in the CO J=3$\rightarrow$2, 6$\rightarrow$5 and 7$\rightarrow$6 transitions, made using the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment Telescope (APEX), toward the massive and dense core IRAS 16562$-$3959. This core harbors a string of radio sources thought to be powered by a central collimated jet of ionized gas. The molecular observations show the presence of high velocity gas exhibiting a quadrupolar morphology, most likely produced by the presence of two collimated outflows. The southeast-northwest molecular outflow is aligned with the string of radio continuum sources, suggesting it is driven by the jet. We find that the excitation temperature of the gas in the SE-NW outflow is high, with values of 145 and 120 K for the blueshifted and redshifted lobes, respectively. This outflow has a total mass of 1.92 \Msun, a total momentum of $\sim 89$ \Msun \kms and an averaged momentum rate of $\sim 3.0\times10^{-2}$ \Msun \kms yr$^{-1}$, values characteristics of flows driven by young massive stellar objects with high luminosities ($L_{\rm bol} \sim 2\times10^4$ \Lsun). Complementary data taken with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) in high density and shock tracers support the picture that IRAS 16562$-$3959 is an accreting young massive star associated with an ionized jet, which is the energy source of a molecular outflow., Accepted for publication in the ApJ

We derive the physical properties of 580 molecular clouds based on their 12CO and 13CO line emission detected in the University of Massachusetts-Stony Brook (UMSB) and Galactic Ring surveys. We provide a range of values of the physical properties of molecular clouds, and find a power-law correlation between their radii and masses, suggesting that the fractal dimension of the interstellar medium is around 2.36. This relation, M = (228 ± 18) R 2.36 ± 0.04, allows us to derive masses for an additional 170 Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) molecular clouds not covered by the UMSB survey. We derive the Galactic surface mass density of molecular gas and examine its spatial variations throughout the Galaxy. We find that the azimuthally averaged Galactic surface density of molecular gas peaks between Galactocentric radii of 4 and 5 kpc. Although the Perseus arm is not detected in molecular gas, the Galactic surface density of molecular gas is enhanced along the positions of the Scutum-Crux and Sagittarius arms. This may indicate that molecular clouds form in spiral arms and are disrupted in the inter-arm space. Finally, we find that the CO excitation temperature of molecular clouds decreases away from the Galactic center, suggesting a possible decline in the star formation rate with Galactocentric radius. There is a marginally significant enhancement in the CO excitation temperature of molecular clouds at a Galactocentric radius of about 6 kpc, which in the longitude range of the GRS corresponds to the Sagittarius arm. This temperature increase could be associated with massive star formation in the Sagittarius spiral arm.

Identified as extinction features against the bright Galactic mid-infrared background, infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are thought to harbor the very earliest stages of star and cluster formation. In order to better characterize the properties of their embedded cores, we have obtained new 24um, 60-100um, and sub-millimeter continuum data toward a sample of 38 IRDCs. The 24um Spitzer images reveal that while the IRDCs remain dark, many of the cores are associated with bright 24um emission sources, which suggests that they contain one or more embedded protostars. Combining the 24um, 60-100um, and sub-millimeter continuum data, we have constructed broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 157 of the cores within these IRDCs and, using simple gray-body fits to the SEDs, have estimated their dust temperatures, emissivities, opacities, bolometric luminosities, masses and densities. Based on their Spitzer/IRAC 3-8um colors and the presence of 24um point source emission, we have separated cores that harbor active, high-mass star formation from cores that are quiescent. The active `protostellar' cores typically have warmer dust temperatures and higher bolometric luminosities than the more quiescent, perhaps `pre-protostellar', cores. Because the mass distributions of the populations are similar, however, we speculate that the active and quiescent cores may represent different evolutionary stages of the same underlying population of cores. Although we cannot rule out low-mass star-formation in the quiescent cores, the most massive of them are excellent candidates for the `high-mass starless core' phase, the very earliest in the formation of a high-mass star., Accepted by ApJ. 107 pages in total (72 pages of on-line only material).

The "Nessie" Nebula is a filamentary infrared dark cloud (IRDC) with a large aspect ratio of over 150:1 (1.5 degrees x 0.01 degrees, or 80 pc x 0.5 pc at a kinematic distance of 3.1 kpc). Maps of HNC (1-0) emission, a tracer of dense molecular gas, made with the Australia Telescope National Facility Mopra telescope, show an excellent morphological match to the mid-IR extinction. Moreover, because the molecular line emission from the entire nebula has the same radial velocity to within +/- 3.4 km/s, the nebula is a single, coherent cloud and not the chance alignment of multiple unrelated clouds along the line of sight. The Nessie Nebula contains a number of compact, dense molecular cores which have a characteristic projected spacing of ~ 4.5 pc along the filament. The theory of gravitationally bound gaseous cylinders predicts the existence of such cores, which, due to the "sausage" or "varicose" fluid instability, fragment from the cylinder at a characteristic length scale. If turbulent pressure dominates over thermal pressure in Nessie, then the observed core spacing matches theoretical predictions. We speculate that the formation of high-mass stars and massive star clusters arises from the fragmentation of filamentary IRDCs caused by the "sausage" fluid instability that leads to the formation of massive, dense molecular cores. Aims: We examine the recoverability and completeness limits of the dense core mass functions (CMFs) derived for a molecular cloud using extinction data and a core identification scheme based on two-dimensional thresholding. Methods: We performed simulations where a population of artificial cores was embedded into the variable background extinction field of the Pipe nebula. We extracted the cores from the simulated extinction maps, constructed the CMFs, and compared them to the input CMFs. The simulations were repeated using a variety of extraction parameters and several core populations with differing input mass functions and differing degrees of crowding. Results: The fidelity of the observed CMF depends on the parameters selected for the core extraction algorithm for our background. More importantly, it depends on how crowded the core population is. We find that the observed CMF recovers the true CMF reliably when the mean separation of cores is larger than their mean diameter (f>1). If this condition holds, the derived CMF is accurate and complete above M > 0.8-1.5 Msun, depending on the parameters used for the core extraction. In the simulations, the best fidelity was achieved with the detection threshold of 1 or 2 times the rms-noise of the extinction data, and with the contour level spacings of 3 times the rms-noise. Choosing larger threshold and wider level spacings increases the limiting mass. The simulations show that when f>1.5, the masses of individual cores are recovered with a typical uncertainty of 25-30 %. When f=1 the uncertainty is ~60 %. A recent high angular resolution extinction map toward the most opaque molecular globule, Globule 2, in the Coalsack Nebula revealed that it contains a strong central ring of dust column density. This ring represents a region of high density and pressure that is likely a transient and possibly turbulent structure. Dynamical models suggest that the ring has formed as a result of a sudden increase in external pressure which is driving a compression wave into the Globule. Here we combine the extinction measurements with a detailed study of the C18O (1-0) molecular line profiles toward Globule 2 in order to investigate the overall kinematics and, in doing so, test this dynamical model. We find that the ring corresponds to an enhancement in the C18O non-thermal velocity dispersion and non-thermal pressure. We observe a velocity gradient across the Globule that appears to trace two distinct systematic subsonic velocity flows that happen to converge within the ring. We suggest, therefore, that the ring has formed as two subsonic flows of turbulent gas merge within the Globule. The fact that the outer layers of the Globule appear stable against collapse yet there is no centrally condensed core, suggests that the Globule may be evolving from the outside in and has yet to stabilize, confirming its youth., 33 pages. 11 figures. In Spitzer/IRAC images obtained under the GLIMPSE Legacy Survey, we have identified a unique and provocative nebular object we call the "Southern Jellyfish Nebula." The Southern Jellyfish Nebula is characterized by a fan of narrow tendrils with extreme length-to-width ratios that emanate from the vicinity of a bright infrared point source embedded in a smaller resolved nebula. From CO observations of the Nebula's morphologically associated molecular cloud, we have derived a kinematic distance of 5.7 ± 0.8 kpc and a cloud mass of 3.2 ± 0.9 × 10^3 M_⊙. The tendril-like ropes of the Nebula have widths of ~0.1 pc and lengths of up to ~2 pc. We have integrated the infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of the point source to establish it as a massive young stellar object (MYSO), most likely forming alone, but possibly masking fainter cluster members. The shape of the SED is consistent with the shape of a late Class 0 SED model. Based on its far-IR luminosity of 3.3 ± 0.9 × 10^4 L_⊙, the Southern Jellyfish's MYSO has a zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) spectral type of B0. Given the curious nature of this nebula, we suspect its peculiar IR-bright structure is directly related to its current state of star formation.

We present molecular-line observations of 94 dark cloud cores identified in the Pipe nebula through near-IR extinction mapping. Using the Arizona Radio Observatory 12m telescope, we obtained spectra of these cores in the J=1-0 transition of C18O. We use the measured core parameters, i.e., antenna temperature, linewidth, radial velocity, radius and mass, to explore the internal kinematics of these cores as well as their radial motions through the larger molecular cloud. We find that the vast majority of the dark extinction cores are true cloud cores rather than the superposition of unrelated filaments. While we identify no significant correlations between the core's internal gas motions and the cores' other physical parameters, we identify spatially correlated radial velocity variations that outline two main kinematic components of the cloud. The largest is a 15pc long filament that is surprisingly narrow both in spatial dimensions and in radial velocity. Beginning in the Stem of the Pipe, this filament displays uniformly small C18O linewidths (dv~0.4kms-1) as well as core to core motions only slightly in excess of the gas sound speed. The second component outlines what appears to be part of a large (2pc; 1000 solar mass) ring-like structure. Cores associated with this component display both larger linewidths and core to core motions than in the main cloud. We have discovered a new H$_2$CO (formaldehyde) $1_{1,0}-1_{1,1}$ 4.82966 GHz maser in Galactic Center Cloud C, G0.38+0.04. At the time of acceptance, this is the eighth region containing an H$_2$CO maser detected in the Galaxy. Cloud C is one of only two sites of confirmed high-mass star formation along the Galactic Center Ridge, affirming that H$_2$CO masers are exclusively associated with high-mass star formation. This discovery led us to search for other masers, among which we found new SiO vibrationally excited masers, making this the fourth star-forming region in the Galaxy to exhibit SiO maser emission. Cloud C is also a known source of CH$_3$OH Class-II and OH maser emission. There are now two known SiO and H$_2$CO maser containing regions in the CMZ, compared to two and six respectively in the Galactic disk, while there is a relative dearth of H$_2$O and CH$_3$OH Class-II masers in the CMZ. SiO and H$_2$CO masers may be preferentially excited in the CMZ, perhaps due to higher gas-phase abundances from grain destruction and heating, or alternatively H$_2$O and CH$_3$OH maser formation may be suppressed in the CMZ. We have obtained wide-field thermal infrared (IR) images of the Carina Nebula, using the SPIREX/Abu telescope at the South Pole. Emission from poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at 3.29um, a tracer of photodissociation regions (PDRs), reveals many interesting well defined clumps and diffuse regions throughout the complex. Near-IR images (1--2um), along with images from the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) satellite (8--21um) were incorporated to study the interactions between the young stars and the surrounding molecular cloud in more detail. Two new PAH emission clumps have been identified in the Keyhole Nebula and were mapped in 12CO(2--1) and (1--0) using the SEST. Analysis of their physical properties reveals they are dense molecular clumps, externally heated with PDRs on their surfaces and supported by external pressure in a similar manner to the other clumps in the region. A previously identified externally heated globule containing IRAS 10430-5931 in the southern molecular cloud, shows strong 3.29-, 8- and 21-um emission, the spectral energy distribution (SED) revealing the location of an ultra-compact (UC) HII region. The northern part of the nebula is complicated, with PAH emission inter-mixed with mid-IR dust continuum emission. Several point sources are located here and through a two-component black-body fit to their SEDs, we have identified 3 possible UC HII regions as well as a young star surrounded by a circumstellar disc. This implies that star formation in this region is on-going and not halted by the intense radiation from the surrounding young massive stars., 14 pages, 12 figures. Accepted by MNRAS. Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are believed to host the earliest stages of high-mass star and cluster formation. Because O stars typically travel short distances over their lifetimes, if IRDCs host the earliest stages of high-mass star formation then these cold, dense molecular clouds should be located in or near the spiral arms in the Galaxy. The Galactic distribution of a large sample of IRDCs should therefore provide information on Galactic structure. Moreover, determination of distances enables mass and luminosity calculations. We have observed a large sample of IRDC candidates in the first Galactic quadrant in the dense gas tracer CS (2-1) using the Mopra telescope in order to determine kinematic distances from the molecular line velocities. We find that the IRDCs are concentrated around a Galactocentric distance of ~4.5 kpc, agreeing with the results of Simon et al. This distribution is consistent with the location of the Scutum-Centaurus spiral arm. The group of IRDCs near the Sun in the first quadrant detected in 13CO (1-0) in Simon et al. is not detected in the CS data. This discrepancy arises from the differences in the critical densities between the 13CO (1-0) and CS (2-1) lines. We determine that the Midcourse Space Experiment selected IRDCs are not a homogeneous population, and 13CO (1-0) traces a population of IRDCs with lower column densities and lower 1.1 mm flux densities in addition to more dense IRDCs detected in CS. Masses of the first quadrant IRDCs are calculated from 13CO (1-0) maps. We find a strong peak in the Galactocentric IRDC mass surface density distribution at R Gal ~ 4.5 kpc.

We present high spectral resolution millimeter mapped observations of seven prestellar cores in the Coalsack, including imaging in five optically thin molecular species of the kinematic structure of two of the densest cores, C2 and C4. Various collapse-critical indices are calculated; critical masses needed for collapse are consistently greater than those observed, the latter ranging from 0.4 to 2.4 M{sub sun}. The molecular emission in several of the cores shows line profiles with infall characteristics as well as elongated areas of increased line widths and reversals of center velocity gradients, implying that accretion disks may be forming.

Young massive clusters (YMCs) have central stellar mass surface densities exceeding $10^{4} M_{\odot} pc^{-2}$. It is currently unknown whether the stars formed at such high (proto)stellar densities. We compile a sample of gas clouds in the Galaxy which have sufficient gas mass within a radius of a few parsecs to form a YMC, and compare their radial gas mass distributions to the stellar mass distribution of Galactic YMCs. We find that the gas in the progenitor clouds is distributed differently than the stars in YMCs. The mass surface density profiles of the gas clouds are generally shallower than the stellar mass surface density profiles of the YMCs, which are characterised by prominent dense core regions with radii ~ 0.1 pc, followed by a power-law tail. On the scale of YMC core radii, we find that there are no known clouds with significantly more mass in their central regions when compared to Galactic YMCs. Additionally, we find that models in which stars form from very dense initial conditions require surface densities that are generally higher than those seen in the known candidate YMC progenitor clouds. Our results show that the quiescent, less evolved clouds contain less mass in their central regions than in the highly star-forming clouds. This suggests an evolutionary trend in which clouds continue to accumulate mass towards their centres after the onset of star formation. We conclude that a conveyor-belt scenario for YMC formation is consistent with the current sample of Galactic YMCs and their progenitor clouds., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables. Despite the simplicity of theoretical models of supersonically turbulent, isothermal media, their predictions successfully match the observed gas structure and star formation activity within low-pressure (P/k < 10^5 K cm^-3) molecular clouds in the solar neighbourhood. However, it is unknown if these theories extend to clouds in high-pressure (P/k > 10^7 K cm^-3) environments, like those in the Galaxy's inner 200 pc Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) and in the early Universe. Here we present ALMA 3mm dust continuum emission within a cloud, G0.253+0.016, which is immersed in the high-pressure environment of the CMZ. While the log-normal shape and dispersion of its column density PDF is strikingly similar to those of solar neighbourhood clouds, there is one important quantitative difference: its mean column density is 1--2 orders of magnitude higher. Both the similarity and difference in the PDF compared to those derived from solar neighbourhood clouds match predictions of turbulent cloud models given the high-pressure environment of the CMZ. The PDF shows a small deviation from log-normal at high column densities confirming the youth of G0.253+0.016. Its lack of star formation is consistent with the theoretically predicted, environmentally dependent volume density threshold for star formation which is orders of magnitude higher than that derived for solar neighbourhood clouds. Our results provide the first empirical evidence that the current theoretical understanding of molecular cloud structure derived from the solar neighbourhood also holds in high-pressure environments. G0.253+0.016 is a molecular clump that appears to be on the verge of forming a high mass, Arches-like cluster. Here we present new ALMA observations of its small-scale (~0.07 pc) 3mm dust continuum and molecular line emission. The data reveal a complex network of emission features, the morphology of which ranges from small, compact regions to extended, filamentary structures that are seen in both emission and absorption. The dust column density is well traced by molecules with higher excitation energies and critical densities, consistent with a clump that has a denser interior. A statistical analysis supports the idea that turbulence shapes the observed gas structure within G0.253+0.016. We find a clear break in the turbulent power spectrum derived from the optically thin dust continuum emission at a spatial scale of ~0.1 pc, which may correspond to the spatial scale at which gravity has overcome the thermal pressure. We suggest that G0.253+0.016 is on the verge of forming a cluster from hierarchical, filamentary structures that arise from a highly turbulent medium. Although the stellar distribution within Arches-like clusters is compact, centrally condensed and smooth, the observed gas distribution within G0.253+0.016 is extended, with no high-mass central concentration, and has a complex, hierarchical structure. If this clump gives rise to a high-mass cluster and its stars are formed from this initially hierarchical gas structure, then the resulting cluster must evolve into a centrally condensed structure via a dynamical process., 76 pages, 46 figures.
