Type Ia supernovae (SNe) are believed to be caused by the thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf (WD), but the nature of the progenitor system(s) is still unclear. Recent theoretical and observational developments have led to renewed interest in double degenerate models, in particular the "helium-ignited violent merger" or "dynamically-driven double-degenerate double-detonation" (D$^6$). In this paper we take the output of an existing D$^6$ SN model and carry it into the supernova remnant (SNR) phase up to 4000 years after the explosion, past the time when all the ejecta have been shocked. Assuming a uniform ambient medium, we reveal specific signatures of the explosion mechanism and spatial variations intrinsic to the ejecta. The first detonation produces an ejecta tail visible at early times, while the second detonation leaves a central density peak in the ejecta that is visible at late times. The SNR shell is off-centre at all times, because of an initial velocity shift due to binary motion. The companion WD produces a large conical shadow in the ejecta, visible in projection as a dark patch surrounded by a bright ring. This is a clear and long-lasting feature that is localized, and its impact on the observed morphology is dependent on the viewing angle of the SNR. We present ~400ks NuSTAR observations of the northeast (NE) and southwest (SW) non-thermal limbs of the Galactic SNR SN1006. We discovered three sources with X-ray emission detected at >50keV. Two of them are identified as background AGN. We extract the NuSTAR spectra from a few regions along the non-thermal limbs and jointly analyze them with the XMM-Newton spectra and the radio data. The broad-band radio/X-ray spectra can be well described with a synchrotron emission model from a single population of CR electrons with a power law energy distribution and an exponential cutoff. The power law index of the electron particle distribution function (PDF) is ~1.88-1.95 for both the NE and SW limbs, and we do not find significant evidence for a variation of this index at different energy (curvature). There are significant spatial variations of the synchrotron emission parameters. The highest energy electrons are accelerated in regions with the lowest expansion velocity, which is opposite to what has been found in the Tycho's SNR. In addition to a gradual steepening of synchrotron emission from the center of the non-thermal limbs to larger azimuthal angles, we also find that both the emission spectrum and the PDF are significantly flatter in three regions in the SW limb where the shock encounters higher density ambient medium. The NE limb also shows significantly higher cutoff energy in the PDF than the SW limb. By comparing with the roughly symmetric TeV emission and largely asymmetric GeV emission from the two non-thermal limbs, we conclude that the asymmetry in the ambient medium and magnetic fields may have largely modified the acceleration and emission of CR leptons., 21 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables, ApJ in press

The properties (temperature, density, chemical composition, velocity) of hot astrophysical plasma and the physical processes affecting them (heating/cooling, turbulence, shocks, acceleration) can be probed by high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, to be complemented by high spatial resolution imaging. The paper presents a status of the ESA's Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (Athena) mission, particularly focusing on the science performance of its two focal plane instruments for the studies of extended X-ray sources: the Wide Field Imager (WFI) and the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU). This paper then provides a brief summary of the breakthroughs expected with Athena on the astrophysics of hot plasma, building on the vast heritage of the discoveries and revolutionary results obtained by Chandra and XMM-Newton in this field. Event: SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, 2018, Austin, Texas, United States., The X-IFU will be provided by an international consortium led by France, The Netherlands and Italy, with further ESA member state contributions from Belgium, Finland, Germany, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and two international partners from the United States and Japan: et al., The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer of the ESA Athena X-ray observatory. Over a field of view of 5’ equivalent diameter, it will deliver X-ray spectra from 0.2 to 12 keV with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV up to 7 keV on ∼ 5” pixels. The X-IFU is based on a large format array of super-conducting molybdenum-gold Transition Edge Sensors cooled at ∼ 90 mK, each coupled with an absorber made of gold and bismuth with a pitch of 249 μm. A cryogenic anti-coincidence detector located underneath the prime TES array enables the non X-ray background to be reduced. A bath temperature of ∼ 50 mK is obtained by a series of mechanical coolers combining 15K Pulse Tubes, 4K and 2K Joule-Thomson coolers which pre-cool a sub Kelvin cooler made of a 3He sorption cooler coupled with an Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator. Frequency domain multiplexing enables to read out 40 pixels in one single channel. A photon interacting with an absorber leads to a current pulse, amplified by the readout electronics and whose shape is reconstructed on board to recover its energy with high accuracy. The defocusing capability offered by the Athena movable mirror assembly enables the X-IFU to observe the brightest X-ray sources of the sky (up to Crab-like intensities) by spreading the telescope point spread function over hundreds of pixels. Thus the X-IFU delivers low pile-up, high throughput (< 50%), and typically 10 eV spectral resolution at 1 Crab intensities, i.e. a factor of 10 or more better than Silicon based X-ray detectors. In this paper, the current X-IFU baseline is presented, together with an assessment of its anticipated performance in terms of spectral resolution, background, and count rate capability. Supernova remnants are the site of a number of physical processes (shock-heating, non-equilibrium ionization, hydrodynamic instabilities, particle acceleration, magnetic field amplification). Their related emission processes provide us with a large set of observational data. Supernova remnants result from the interaction of high-velocity material ejected by the supernova explosion with the medium surrounding the progenitor star. This interaction gives rise to a double-shock structure that lasts for hundreds of years, with a forward shock and a reverse shock compressing and heating to tens million of degrees the surrounding medium and the ejecta, respectively. It is mostly in this phase that young supernova remnants provide information on their explosion mechanism through spectro-imaging observations of the ejected nucleosynthesis products and their dynamics, notably in the X-ray domain. I will review these observations and their implications for our current understanding of the dynamics of supernova remnants. I will conclude on the prospects with future facilities.

Supernova remnant shocks are strong candidates for being the source of energetic cosmic rays and hadron acceleration is expected to increase the shock compression ratio, providing higher post-shock densities. We exploited the deep observations of the XMM-Newton Large Program on SN 1006 to verify this prediction. Spatially resolved spectral analysis led us to detect X-ray emission from the shocked ambient medium in SN 1006 and to find that its density significantly increases in regions where particle acceleration is efficient. Our results provide evidence for the effects of acceleration of cosmic ray hadrons on the post-shock plasma in supernova remnants.

The spectral shape of the synchrotron X-ray emission from SN 1006 reveals the fundamental role played by radiative losses in shaping the high-energy tail of the electron spectrum. We analyze data from the XMM-Newton SN 1006 Large Program and confirm that in both nonthermal limbs the loss-limited model correctly describes the observed spectra. We study the physical origin of the observed variations of the synchrotron cutoff energy across the shell. We investigate the role played by the shock velocity and by the electron gyrofactor. We found that the cutoff energy of the synchrotron X-ray emission reaches its maximum value in regions where the shock has experienced its highest average speed. This result is consistent with the loss-limited framework. We also find that the electron acceleration in both nonthermal limbs of SN 1006 proceeds close to the Bohm diffusion limit, the gyrofactor being in the range η ∼ 1.5-4. We finally investigate possible explanations for the low values of cutoff energy measured in thermal limbs.

The supernova remnant SN 1006 is a source of high-energy particles and its southwestern limb is interacting with a dense ambient cloud, thus being a promising region for gamma-ray hadronic emission. We aim at describing the physics and the nonthermal emission associated with the shock-cloud interaction to derive the physical parameters of the cloud (poorly constrained by the data analysis), to ascertain the origin of the observed spatial variations in the spectral properties of the X-ray synchrotron emission, and to predict spectral and morphological features of the resulting gamma-ray emission. We performed 3-D magnetohydrodynamic simulations modeling the evolution of SN 1006 and its interaction with the ambient cloud, and explored different model setups. By applying the REMLIGHT code on the model results, we synthesized the synchrotron X-ray emission, and compared it with actual observations, to constrain the parameters of the model. We also synthesized the leptonic and hadronic gamma-ray emission from the models, deriving constraints on the energy content of the hadrons accelerated at the southwestern limb. We found that the impact of the SN 1006 shock front with a uniform cloud with density 0.5 cm^-3 can explain the observed morphology, the azimuthal variations of the cutoff frequency of the X-ray synchrotron emission, and the shock proper motion in the interaction region. Based on our newly developed methods and the XMM-Newton large program of SN1006, we extract and analyze the spectra from 3596 tessellated regions of this SNR each with 0.3-8 keV counts $>10^4$. For the first time, we map out multiple physical parameters, such as the temperature ($kT$), electron density ($n_e$), ionization parameter ($n_et$), ionization age ($t_{ion}$), metal abundances, as well as the radio-to-X-ray slope ($\alpha$) and cutoff frequency ($\nu_{cutoff}$) of the synchrotron emission. We construct probability distribution functions of $kT$ and $n_et$, and model them with several Gaussians, in order to characterize the average thermal and ionization states of such an extended source. We construct equivalent width (EW) maps based on continuum interpolation with the spectral model of each regions. We then compare the EW maps of OVII, OVIII, OVII K$\delta-\zeta$, Ne, Mg, SiXIII, SiXIV, and S lines constructed with this method to those constructed with linear interpolation. We further extract spectra from larger regions to confirm the features revealed by parameter and EW maps, which are often not directly detectable on X-ray intensity images. For example, O abundance is consistent with solar across the SNR, except for a low-abundance hole in the center. This "O Hole" has enhanced OVII K$\delta-\zeta$ and Fe emissions, indicating recently reverse shocked ejecta, but also has the highest $n_et$, indicating forward shocked ISM. Therefore, a multi-temperature model is needed to decompose these components. In the framework of the study of supernova remnants and their complex interaction with the interstellar medium, we report on an XMM-Newton EPIC observation of the Galactic supernova remnant W49B. We investigate the spatial distribution of the chemical and physical properties of the plasma, so as to get important constraints on the physical scenario, on the dynamics of the supernova explosion, and on the interaction of the supernova remnant with the ambient interstellar clouds. We present line images, equivalent width maps, and a spatially resolved spectral analysis of a set of homogeneous regions. The X-ray spectrum of W49B is characterized by strong K emission lines from Si, S, Ar, Ca and Fe. In all the regions studied, the X-ray spectrum is dominated by the emission from the ejecta and there is no indication of radial stratification of the elements. A high overabundance of Ni (Ni/Ni_sun=10^{+2}_{-1}) is required in the bright central region and the previous detection of Cr and Mn line emission is confirmed. Spectra are well described by two thermal components in collisional ionization equilibrium. We observe spatial variations in the temperature, with the highest temperature found in the east and the lowest in the west. Our results support a scenario in which the X-ray emission comes from ejecta interacting with a dense belt of ambient material, but another possibility is that the remnant is the result of an asymmetric bipolar explosion with the eastern jet being hotter and more Fe-rich than the western jet. The eastern jet is confined by interaction with ambient molecular clouds. Comparison of the observed abundances with yields for hypernova and supernova nucleosynthesis does not directly support the association of W49B with a gamma-ray burst, although it remains possible., Comment: To be published in A&A. Observations of the X-ray sky after the next decade will most likely be dominated by Athena (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics), the second large mission of ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015–2035 programme. Athena has been conceived to address the “Hot and Energetic Universe” science theme, which focuses on the assembly and evolution of hot baryons in cosmic structures as well as the physics and energetic output generated by accreting super-massive black holes, along with the relationship between the two processes, dubbed cosmic feedback. Thanks to its transformational capabilities, Athena will enable bringing all of today's XMM-Newton's hot science topics to a new stage. The supernova remnant SN 1006 is a powerful source of high-energy particles and evolves in a relatively tenuous and uniform environment despite interacting with an atomic cloud in its northwestern limb. The X-ray image of SN 1006 reveals an indentation in the southwestern part of the shock front and the H I maps show an isolated (southwestern) cloud, having the same velocity as the northwestern cloud, whose morphology fits perfectly in the indentation. We performed spatially resolved spectral analysis of a set of small regions in the southwestern nonthermal limb and studied the deep X-ray spectra obtained within the XMM-Newton SN 1006 Large Program. We also analyzed archive H I data, obtained by combining single-dish and interferometric observations. We found that the best-fit value of N H derived from the X-ray spectra significantly increases in regions corresponding to the southwestern cloud, while the cutoff energy of the synchrotron emission decreases. The N H variation corresponds perfectly with the H I column density of the southwestern cloud, as measured from the radio data. The decrease in the cutoff energy at the indentation clearly reveals that the back side of the cloud is actually interacting with the remnant. The southwestern limb therefore presents a unique combination of efficient particle acceleration and high ambient density, thus being the most promising region for γ-ray hadronic emission in SN 1006. We use the Chandra X-ray Observatory to study the region in the Tycho supernova remnant between the blast wave and the shocked ejecta interface or contact discontinuity. This zone contains all the history of the shock-heated gas and cosmic-ray acceleration in the remnant. We present for the first time evidence for significant spatial variations of the X-ray synchrotron emission in the form of spectral steepening from a photon index of 2.6 right at the blast wave to a value of 3.0 several arcseconds behind. We interpret this result along with the profiles of radio and X-ray intensity using a self-similar hydrodynamical model including cosmic ray backreaction that accounts for the observed ratio of radii between the blast wave and contact discontinuity. Two different assumptions were made about the post-shock magnetic field evolution: one where the magnetic field (amplified at the shock) is simply carried by the plasma flow and remains relatively high in the post-shock region [synchrotron losses limited rim case], and another where the amplified magnetic field is rapidly damped behind the blast wave [magnetic damping case]. Both cases fairly well describe the X-ray data, however both fail to explain the observed radio profile. The projected synchrotron emission leaves little room for the presence of thermal emission from the shocked ambient medium. We use recent XMM-Newton observations to study the ''diffuse'' X-ray emission seen in the Galactic Centre Region. Spectrally, the emission can be separated into three major components, each characterised by a prominent spectral line. Using these lines as tracers, we investigate the underlying spatial distribution of the various components. Specifbally, we find the 6.7-keV line of helium-like iron, has a relatively smooth, circularly symmetric distribution centred on Sgr A* and a surface brightness which falls off with radius as r−0.87±0.06 over the range r = 3' − 12'. This mirrors the distribution of the underlying stellar population and adds strong support to the hypothesis that the 6.7-keV line and the associated hard thermal continuum (with kT ≈ 8 keV) originates in the summed emission of faint point sources.

Aims: We want to probe the physics of fast collision-less shocks in supernova remnants. In particular, we are interested in the non-equilibration of temperatures and particle acceleration. Specifically, we aim to measure the oxygen temperature with regards to the electron temperature. In addition, we search for synchrotron emission in the northwestern thermal rim. Methods: This study is part of a dedicated deep observational project of SN 1006 using XMM-Newton, which provides us with currently the best resolution spectra of the bright northwestern oxygen knot. We aim to use the reflection grating spectrometer to measure the thermal broadening of the O vii line triplet by convolving the emission profile of the remnant with the response matrix. Results: The line broadening was measured to be {\sigma}_e = 2.4 \pm 0.3 eV, corresponding to an oxygen temperature of 275$^{+72}_{-63}$ keV. From the EPIC spectra we obtain an electron temperature of 1.35 \pm 0.10 keV. The difference in temperature between the species provides further evidence of non-equilibration of temperatures in a shock. In addition, we find evidence for a bow shock that emits X-ray synchrotron radiation, which is at odds with the general idea that due to the magnetic field orientation only in the NE and SW region X-ray synchrotron radiation should be emitted. We find an unusual H{\alpha} and X-ray synchrotron geometry, in that the H{\alpha} emission peaks downstream of the synchrotron emission. This may be an indication for a peculiar H{\alpha} shock, in which the density is lower and neutral fraction are higher than in other supernova remnants, resulting in a peak in H{\alpha} emission further downstream of the shock., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures. SN 1006 is the prototype of shell supernova remnants, in which non-thermal synchrotron emission dominates the X-ray spectrum. The non-thermal emission is due to the cosmic-ray electrons accelerated behind the blast wave. The X-ray synchrotron emission is due to the highest energy electrons, and is thus a tracer of the maximum energy electrons may reach behind a shock. We have put together all XMM-Newton observations to build a full map of SN 1006. The very low brightness above 2 keV in the interior indicates that the bright non-thermal limbs are polar caps rather than an equator. This implies that the ambient magnetic field runs southwest to northeast, along the Galactic plane. We used a combined VLA/Parkes radio map to anchor the spectrum at low energy, and model the spectra with synchrotron emission from a cut-off power-law electron distribution, plus a thermal component. We present radial and azimuthal profiles of the cut-off frequency. The cut-off frequency decreases steeply with radius towards the center and with position angle away from the maximum emission. The maximum energy reached by accelerated particles, as well as their number, must be higher at the bright limbs than elsewhere. This implies interesting constraints for acceleration at perpendicular shocks. I present a comparative review focusing on three young Supernova Remnants, Cas A, Tycho and Kepler, in the light of recent X-ray observations obtained with the XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites. Recently available, X-ray spectro-imagery of young Supernova Remnants is providing unique information on the interaction region between the ejected material and the ambient medium, as well as on their associated shocks. These observations offer crucial constraints to characterise: • the initial density profile of the supernova; • the elemental composition in the ejecta and the spatial distribution of these synthesized elements; • the synchrotron emission from TeV accelerated electrons, the efficiency of particle acceleration at their shocks and the downstream magnetic field.

We report the results of an XMM-Newton observation of Sgr A East and its surroundings. The X-ray spectrum of Sgr A East is well represented with a two-temperature plasma model with temperatures of ~1 and ~4 keV. Only the iron abundance shows clear spatial variation; it concentrates in the core of Sgr A East. The derived plasma parameters suggest that Sgr A East originated in a single supernova. Around Sgr A East, there is a broad distribution of hard X-ray emission with a superimposed soft excess component extending away from the location of Sgr A East both above and below the plane. A number of supernova remnants (SNRs) show nonthermal X-rays assumed to be synchrotron emission from shock accelerated TeV electrons. The existence of these TeV electrons strongly suggests that the shocks in SNRs are sources of galactic cosmic rays (CRs). In addition, there is convincing evidence from broad-band studies of individual SNRs and elsewhere that the particle acceleration process in SNRs can be efficient and nonlinear. If SNR shocks are efficient particle accelerators, the production of CRs impacts the thermal properties of the shock heated, X-ray emitting gas and the SNR evolution. We report on a technique that couples nonlinear diffusive shock acceleration, including the backreaction of the accelerated particles on the structure of the forward and reverse shocks, with a hydrodynamic simulation of SNR evolution. Compared to models which ignore CRs, the most important hydrodynamical effects of placing a significant fraction of shock energy into CRs are larger shock compression ratios and lower temperatures in the shocked gas. We compare our results, which use an approximate description of the acceleration process, with a more complete model where the full CR transport equations are solved (i.e., Berezhko et al., 2002), and find excellent agreement for the CR spectrum summed over the SNR lifetime and the evolving shock compression ratio. The importance of the coupling between particle acceleration and SNR dynamics for the interpretation of broad-band continuum and thermal X-ray observations is discussed., Accepted for publication in A & A; 14 pages including 11 figures

We report the discovery of an X-ray filament, XMMJ174540–2904.5, in the Galactic Centre region. Images from Chandra and XMM-Newton show the X-ray source is extended and coincides with a non-thermal radio structure of somewhat larger extent. The X-ray spectrum is clearly not thermal in nature, and is well approximated as a heavily absorbed power-law continuum with a photon index ≈2. Combining the radio and X-ray spectra, we concluded that the emission in both wavebands probably originates in the synchrotron process. We discuss some possible origins for this peculiar non-thermal structure.

The compact radio source Sgr A*, believed to be the counterpart of the massive black hole at the Galactic nucleus, was observed to undergo rapid and intense flaring activity in X-rays with Chandra in October 2000. We report here the detection with XMM-Newton EPIC cameras of the early phase of a similar X-ray flare from this source, which occurred on 2001 September 4. The source 2-10 keV luminosity increased by a factor ~ 20 to reach a level of 4 10$^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in a time interval of about 900 s, just before the end of the observation. The data indicate that the source spectrum was hard during the flare and can be described by simple power law of slope ~ 0.7. We present an X-ray study of the Sgr A East region based on recent XMM-Newton observations. The spectrum of Sgr A East can be represented by a two-component thin thermal plasma model with temperatures of 1 and 4 keV, both of which have reached ionization equilibrium state. The abundance of iron is found to be higher in the central region of the nebula, with Z ≈ 3–4 solar, than in the outer area for which Z ∼ 0.5 solar. On the other hand, the abundances of other elements appear uniformly distributed with Z ∼ 1. We also detect a weak fluorescent Kα line from neutral iron in the outer region of source. We discuss the nature of Sgr A East on the basis of these new X-ray results.

Recent Suzaku X-ray observations of the ejecta-dominated supernova remnant W49B have shown that in the global spectrum there is a clear indication for the presence of overionized plasma whose physical origin is still under debate. In order to ascertain the physical origin of such a rapidly cooling plasma, we focus on the study of its spatial localization within the X-ray emitting ejecta. We confirm the presence of a saw-edged excess (interpreted as a strong radiative recombination continuum) in the global spectrum above 8 keV, emerging above the ionization-equilibrium model. We produce a hardness ratio map to determine where the plasma is overionized and we perform a spectral analysis of the regions with and without strong overionization. We find that the overionized plasma is localized in the center of the remnant and in its western jet, while it is not detected in the bright eastern jet, where the expansion of the ejecta is hampered by their interaction with a dense interstellar cloud. The location of overionized plasma suggests that the inner ejecta are rapidly cooling by expansion, unlike the outer ejecta, for which expansion is hampered by interstellar clouds seen in H2, Comment: Accepted for publication as a Letter in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The new generation X-ray telescopes launched in 1999 (Chandra and XMM-Newton) provide for the first time, good spatial and spectral resolution together, allowing to map emission lines of heavy elements in supernova remnants. In young supernova remnants this reflects nucleosynthesis in the progenitor, and gives access (in theory) to the absolute amounts of the main elements, as well as their radial and azimuthal repartition. With arcsecond resolution, Chandra is able to resolve the shocked gas in the radial direction in young supernova remnants. The radial profile of density and temperature between the forward and reverse shocks is directly related to the density–velocity profile after the explosion. Looking for modifications to the remnant’s structure induced by cosmic ray acceleration is another area accessible to the modern X-ray telescopes. It should tell us whether a significant fraction of the kinetic energy is spent accelerating cosmic rays at the shock. The shocked region is then thinner and the shocked gas less hot.

The origin of the iron fluorescent line at 6.4 keV from an extended region surrounding the Arches cluster is debated and the non-variability of this emission up to 2009 has favored the low-energy cosmic-ray origin over a possible irradiation by hard X-rays. By probing the variability of the Arches cloud non-thermal emission in the most recent years, including a deep observation in 2012, we intend to discriminate between the two competing scenarios. We perform a spectral fit of XMM-Newton observations collected from 2000 to 2013 in order to build the Arches cloud lightcurve corresponding to both the neutral Fe Kalpha line and the X-ray continuum emissions. We reveal a 30% flux drop in 2012, detected with more than 4 sigma significance for both components. This implies that a large fraction of the studied non-thermal emission is due to the reflection of an X-ray transient source., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Supernova remnants are believed to be the major contributors to Galactic cosmic rays. In this paper, we explore how the non-thermal emission from young remnants can be used to probe the production of energetic particles at the shock (both protons and electrons). Our model couples hydrodynamic simulations of a supernova remnant with a kinetic treatment of particle acceleration. We include two important back-reaction loops upstream of the shock: energetic particles can (i) modify the flow structure and (ii) amplify the magnetic field. As the latter process is not fully understood, we use different limit cases that encompass a wide range of possibilities. We follow the history of the shock dynamics and of the particle transport downstream of the shock, which allows us to compute the non-thermal emission from the remnant at any given age. We do this in 3D, in order to generate projected maps that can be compared with observations. We observe that completely different recipes for the magnetic field can lead to similar modifications of the shock structure, although to very different configurations of the field and particles. We show how this affects the emission patterns in different energy bands, from radio to X-rays and $\gamma$-rays. High magnetic fields ($>100 \mu$G) directly impact the synchrotron emission from electrons, by restricting their emission to thin rims, and indirectly impact the inverse Compton emission from electrons and also the pion decay emission from protons, mostly by shifting their cut-off energies to respectively lower and higher energies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. The experimental basis of cosmic-ray astrophysics consists of detailed measurements of the cosmic-ray intensity arriving near earth, of observations of photons in all wavelength bands generated by cosmic ray interactions in the interstellar medium or in the cosmic-ray sources, and of laboratory studies of high energy particle interactions. In addition, a large body of astronomical information on the composition of stellar atmospheres and of the interstellar medium, including interstellar dust grains, is required to bring cosmic-ray data into context with subjects such as nucleosynthesis and evolution of the galaxy. This report will summarize some of these observational questions, will discuss specific experimental needs in current research, and will review some of the key measurements that can be expected for the near future. This review will neither be complete nor attempt to establish observational priorities. However, it will illustrate the variety of observational activities that are required to achieve progress.

The main features of cosmic-ray source models and acceleration processes are reviewed, with special emphasis on the possible observational tests, through both composition analysis and multi-wavelength studies of supernova remnants. Non-linear effects in the context of supernova-induced diffusive shock acceleration are discussed, as well as collective acceleration effects induced by multiple supernova explosions inside superbubbles.

Simbol-X is a French-Italian mission, with a participation of German laboratories, for X-ray astronomy in the wide 0.5-80 keV band. Taking advantage of emerging technology in mirror manufacturing and spacecraft formation flying, Simbol-X will push grazing incidence imaging up to ~80 keV, providing an improvement of roughly three orders of magnitude in sensitivity and angular resolution compared to all instruments that have operated so far above 10 keV. This will open a new window in X-ray astronomy, allowing breakthrough studies on black hole physics and census and particle acceleration mechanisms. We have developed a simple model to investigate the modifications of the hydrodynamics and non-equilibrium ionization X-ray emission in young supernova remnants due to nonlinear particle acceleration. In nonlinear, diffusive shock acceleration, the heating of the gas to X-ray emitting temperatures is strongly coupled to the acceleration of cosmic ray ions. If the acceleration is efficient and a significant fraction of the shock ram energy ends up in cosmic rays, compression ratios will be higher and the shocked temperature lower than test-particle, Rankine-Hugoniot relations predict. We illustrate how particle acceleration impacts the interpretation of X-ray data using the X-ray spectra of Kepler's remnant, observed by ASCA and RXTE. The thermal X-ray emission provides important constraints on the efficiency of particle acceleration, in complement to nonthermal emission. Observations of the oxygen lines [OII]3729 and [OIII]5007 in the medium immediately beyond the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant were carried out with the scanning Fabry-P\'erot spectrophotometer ESOP. Both lines were detected in three different directions - east, northeast and southwest - and up to a distance of 15 pc from the shock front. The ionized medium is in the immediate vicinity of the remnant, as evinced by the smooth brightening of both lines as the adiabatic shock transition (defined by the X-ray perimeter) is crossed. These lines are usually brighter around the Cygnus Loop than in the general background in directions where the galactic latitude is above 5 degrees. There is also marginal (but significant) evidence that the degree of ionization is somewhat larger around the Cygnus Loop. We conclude that the energy necessary to ionize this large bubble of gas could have been supplied by an O8 or O9 type progenitor or the particles heated by the expanding shock front. The supernova remnant SN 1006 is a powerful source of high-energy particles and evolves in a relatively tenuous and uniform environment, though interacting with an atomic cloud in its northwestern limb. The X-ray image of SN 1006 reveals an indentation in the southwestern part of the shock front and the HI maps show an isolated cloud (southwestern cloud) having the same velocity as the northwestern cloud and whose morphology fits perfectly in the indentation. We performed spatially resolved spectral analysis of a set of small regions in the southwestern nonthermal limb and studied the deep X-ray spectra obtained within the XMM-Newton SN 1006 Large Program. We also analyzed archive HI data, obtained combining single dish and interferometric observations. We found that the best-fit value of the N_H derived from the X-ray spectra significantly increases in regions corresponding to the southwestern cloud, while the cutoff energy of the synchrotron emission decreases. The amount of the N_H variations corresponds perfectly with the HI column density of the southwestern cloud, as measured from the radio data. The decrease in the cutoff energy at the indentation clearly reveals that the back side of the cloud is actually interacting with the remnant. The southwestern limb therefore presents a unique combination of efficient particle acceleration and high ambient density, thus being the most promising region for gamma-ray hadronic emission in SN 1006. We present a library of numerical models of cosmic-ray accelerating supernova remnants (SNRs) evolving through a homogeneous ambient medium. We analyse distributions of the different energy components and diffusive shock acceleration time-scales for the models in various conditions. The library comprises a variety of SNR evolutionary scenarios and is used to map remnants with sufficiently known properties. This mapping constrains the respective ambient medium properties and the acceleration efficiency. Employing the library, we derive the ambient medium density, ambient magnetic field strength and the cosmic-ray acceleration efficiency for models of Tycho and SN 1006 remnants and refine the ages of SNR 0509-67.5 and SNR 0519-69.0., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, MNRAS accepted

This White Paper, submitted to the recent ESA call for science themes to define its future large missions, advocates the need for a transformational leap in our understanding of two key questions in astrophysics: 1) How does ordinary matter assemble into the large scale structures that we see today? 2) How do black holes grow and shape the Universe? Hot gas in clusters, groups and the intergalactic medium dominates the baryonic content of the local Universe. To understand the astrophysical processes responsible for the formation and assembly of these large structures, it is necessary to measure their physical properties and evolution. This requires spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy with a factor 10 increase in both telescope throughput and spatial resolving power compared to currently planned facilities. Feedback from supermassive black holes is an essential ingredient in this process and in most galaxy evolution models, but it is not well understood. X-ray observations can uniquely reveal the mechanisms launching winds close to black holes and determine the coupling of the energy and matter flows on larger scales. Due to the effects of feedback, a complete understanding of galaxy evolution requires knowledge of the obscured growth of supermassive black holes through cosmic time, out to the redshifts where the first galaxies form. X-ray emission is the most reliable way to reveal accreting black holes, but deep survey speed must improve by a factor ~100 over current facilities to perform a full census into the early Universe. The Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (Athena+) mission provides the necessary performance (e.g. angular resolution, spectral resolution, survey grasp) to address these questions and revolutionize our understanding of the Hot and Energetic Universe. We have studied in detail the production of nonthermal line and continuum X-rays by interaction of accelerated electrons and ions with a neutral ambient gas, and have applied the resulting models to XMM-Newton observations of the X-ray emission emanating from the Arches cluster region near the Galactic center. The diffuse X-ray emission prominent in the 6.4keV Fe Kα line surrounding the very massive cluster is likely excited by low-energy cosmic ray ions produced in the ongoing supersonic collision between the star cluster and an adjacent molecular cloud. The nonthermal emission from this region probably offers at present the best available signature for a source of low-energy hadronic cosmic rays in the Galaxy.

The study of both supernova remnants and the hot and cold phases of the interstellar medium are essential for understanding the final stages of stellar evolution and their feedback on the evolution of galaxies through injection of energy and heavy elements. These studies are also crucial for understanding the physics of supernovae, their cosmological implication, and the origin of galactic cosmic rays. The unique capabilities of Athena+ will allow us to explore a new parameter space. Spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy using Athena+ X-IFU of young remnants will allow to characterize individual parcels of ejected material in the line of sight in terms of kinematics, ionization and composition, providing access to the three dimensional geometry of the explosion. Athena+ will also allow studying shock physics and particle acceleration in supernova remnants, as well as their interaction with their environment. Athena+ X-IFU will also characterize the ionization mechanisms competing in forming the complex structures of the hot interstellar medium, likely to keep the echo of past star formation activity, both in our Galaxy and nearby ones. For the first time the dust and gas of the densest cold medium, like in the Galactic Centre environment, will be studied. Athena+ X-IFU will observe, along with the Mg K and Si K edges, which are the main tracers of the silicates content of the ISM, the Fe K edge with unprecedented sensitivity and energy-resolution. Trabajo presentado al Annual Meeting of the French Society of Astronomy and Astrophysics (SF2A), celebrado en Montpellier del 4 al 7 de junio de 2013., The Advanced Telescope for High-energy Astrophysics (Athena+) is being proposed to ESA as the L2 mission (for a launch in 2028) and is specifically designed to answer two of the most pressing questions for astrophysics in the forthcoming decade: How did ordinary matter assemble into the large scale structures we see today? and how do black holes grow and shape the Universe? For addressing these two issues, Athena+ will provide transformational capabilities in terms of angular resolution, effective area, spectral resolution, grasp, that will make it the most powerful X-ray observatory ever flown. Such an observatory, when opened to the astronomical community, will be used for virtually all classes of astrophysical objects, from high-z gamma-ray bursts to the closest planets in our solar neighborhood. In this paper, we briefly review the core science objectives of Athena+, present the science requirements and the foreseen implementation of the mission, and illustrate its transformational capabilities compared to existing facilities.

The iron line at 6.4 keV provides a valuable spectral diagnostic in several fields of X-ray astronomy. It often results from the reprocessing of external X-rays by a neutral or low-ionized medium, but it can also be excited by impacts of low-energy cosmic rays. This paper aims to provide signatures allowing identification of radiation from low-energy cosmic rays in X-ray spectra showing the 6.4 keV line. We study in detail the production of nonthermal line and continuum X-rays by interaction of accelerated electrons and ions with a neutral ambient gas. Corresponding models are then applied to XMM-Newton observations of the X-ray emission emanating from the Arches cluster region near the Galactic center. Bright 6.4 keV line structures are observed around the Arches cluster. This emission is very likely produced by cosmic rays. We find that it can result from the bombardment of molecular gas by energetic ions, but probably not by accelerated electrons. Using a model of X-ray production by cosmic-ray ions, we obtain a best-fit metallicity of the ambient medium of 1.7 plus-minus 0.2 times the solar metallicity. A large flux of low-energy cosmic ray ions could be produced in the ongoing supersonic collision between the star cluster and an adjacent molecular cloud. We find that a particle acceleration efficiency in the resulting shock system of a few percent would give enough power in the cosmic rays to explain the luminosity of the nonthermal X-ray emission. Depending on the unknown shape of the kinetic energy distribution of the fast ions above 1 GeV per nucleon, the Arches cluster region may be a source of high-energy gamma-rays detectable with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. At present, the X-ray emission prominent in the 6.4 keV Fe line emanating from the Arches cluster region probably offers the best available signature for a source of low-energy hadronic cosmic rays in the Galaxy., 23 pages, 21 figures, to appear in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Supernova remnants (SNRs) are believed to be the major contributors to Galactic cosmic rays. The detection of non-thermal emission from SNRs demonstrates the presence of energetic particles, but direct signatures of protons and other ions remain elusive. If these particles receive a sizeable fraction of the explosion energy, the morphological and spectral evolution of the SNR must be modified. To assess this, we run 3D hydrodynamic simulations of a remnant coupled with a non-linear acceleration model. We obtain the time-dependent evolution of the shocked structure, impacted by the Rayleigh-Taylor hydrodynamic instabilities at the contact discontinuity and by the back-reaction of particles at the forward shock. We then compute the progressive temperature equilibration and non-equilibrium ionization state of the plasma, and its thermal emission in each cell. This allows us to produce the first realistic synthetic maps of the projected X-ray emission from the SNR. Plasma conditions (temperature, ionization age) can vary widely over the projected surface of the SNR, especially between the ejecta and the ambient medium owing to their different composition. This demonstrates the need for spatially-resolved spectroscopy. We find that the integrated emission is reduced with particle back-reaction, with the effect being more significant for the highest photon energies. Therefore different energy bands, corresponding to different emitting elements, probe different levels of the impact of particle acceleration. Our work provides a framework for the interpretation of SNR observations with current X-ray missions (Chandra, XMM-Newton, Suzaku) and with upcoming X-ray missions (such as Astro-H)., Accepted for publication in ApJ. Athena is an X-ray observatory-class mission concept, developed from April to December 2011 as a result of the reformulation exercise for L-class mission proposals in the framework of ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025. Athena's science case is that of the Universe of extremes, from Black Holes to Large-scale structure. The specific science goals are structured around three main pillars: "Black Holes and accretion physics", "Cosmic feedback" and "Large-scale structure of the Universe". Underpinning these pillars, the study of hot astrophysical plasmas offered by Athena broadens its scope to virtually all corners of Astronomy. The Athena concept consists of two co-aligned X-ray telescopes, with focal length 12 m, angular resolution of 10" or better, and totalling an effective area of 1 m2 at 1 keV (0.5 m2 at 6 keV). At the focus of one of the telescopes there is a Wide Field Imager (WFI) providing a field of view of 24'\times 24', 150 eV spectral resolution at 6 keV, and high count rate capability. At the focus of the other telescope there is the X-ray Microcalorimeter Spectrometer (XMS), a cryogenic instrument offering a spectral resolution of 3 eV over a field of view of 2.3' \times 2.3'. Although Athena has not been selected as ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 L1 mission, its science goals and concept conform the basis of what should become ESA's X-ray astronomy flagship., Comment: 94 pages

Supernovae are the main sites of heavy element production in galaxies. Observing their remnants at a relatively early stage of a few hundred years after the explosion provides a direct view of the main synthesized elements produced by various supernova types. While the current observations offer a number of diagnostics and relevant information of the ejected material, further progresses are hampered by the performances of current instruments. I will discuss the main science drivers in the field of supernova remnants and their scientific requirements for future instruments.

The centre of our Galaxy harbours a 4 million solar mass black hole that is unusually quiet: its present X-ray luminosity is more than 10 orders of magnitude less than its Eddington luminosity. The observation of iron fluorescence and hard X-ray emission from some of the massive molecular clouds surrounding the Galactic Centre has been interpreted as an echo of a past flare. Alternatively, low-energy cosmic rays propagating inside the clouds might account for the observed emission, through inverse bremsstrahlung of low energy ions or bremsstrahlung emission of low energy electrons. Here we report the observation of a clear decay of the hard X-ray emission from the molecular cloud Sgr B2 during the past 7 years thanks to more than 20 Ms of INTEGRAL exposure. The measured decay time is compatible with the light crossing time of the molecular cloud core . Such a short timescale rules out inverse bremsstrahlung by cosmic-ray ions as the origin of the X ray emission. We also obtained 2-100 keV broadband X-ray spectra by combining INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton data and compared them with detailed models of X-ray emission due to irradiation of molecular gas by (i) low-energy cosmic-ray electrons and (ii) hard X-rays. Both models can reproduce the data equally well, but the time variability constraints and the huge cosmic ray electron luminosity required to explain the observed hard X-ray emission strongly favor the scenario in which the diffuse emission of Sgr B2 is scattered and reprocessed radiation emitted in the past by Sgr A*. Using recent parallax measurements that place Sgr B2 in front of Sgr A*, we find that the period of intense activity of Sgr A* ended between 75 and 155 years ago., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 10 pages, 5 figures

If a sizeable fraction of the energy of supernova remnant shocks is channeled into energetic particles (commonly identified with Galactic cosmic rays), then the morphological evolution of the remnants must be distinctly modified. Evidence of such modifications has been recently obtained with the Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray satellites. To investigate these effects, we coupled a semi-analytical kinetic model of shock acceleration with a 3D hydrodynamic code (by means of an effective adiabatic index). This enables us to study the time-dependent compression of the region between the forward and reverse shocks due to the back reaction of accelerated particles, concomitantly with the development of the Rayleigh-Taylor hydrodynamic instability at the contact discontinuity. Density profiles depend critically on the injection level eta of particles: for eta up to about 10^-4 modifications are weak and progressive, for eta of the order of 10^-3 modifications are strong and immediate. Nevertheless, the extension of the Rayleigh-Taylor unstable region does not depend on the injection rate. A first comparison of our simulations with observations of Tycho's remnant strengthens the case for efficient acceleration of protons at the forward shock., accepted for publication in A&A (final version)

International audience; The 4 million solar masses black hole at the Galactic centre (GC) is remarkably quiet today. The molecular cloud Sgr B2, among others, emits strong Fe K alpha photons as well as hard X-rays up to 100 keV. This has been interpreted as the result of the illumination of the cloud by a past high luminosity period of Sgr A*. This interpretation is still controversial since irradiation by subrelativistic cosmic rays might also account for the observed spectra. We present here the results of 7 years of INTEGRAL monitoring of Sgr B2 and show that its hard X-ray (20-60 keV) flux has decreased by nearly 40% during that period. This cannot be accounted for by cosmic ray interpretations and support the idea that Sgr A* was more active in the past and has been quiescent since about 100 years.

Several molecular clouds around the Galactic Centre (GC) emit strong neutral iron fluorescence line at 6.4 keV, as well as hard X‐ray emission up to 100 keV. The origin of this emission has long been a matter of controversy: irradiation by low energy cosmic ray electrons or X‐rays emitted by a nearby flaring source in the central region. A recent evidence for time variability in the iron line intensity that has been detected in the Sgr B2 cloud favors the reflexion scenario. We present here the data obtained after 6 years of INTEGRAL monitoring of the GC. In particular, we show a lightcurve of Sgr B2 that reveals a decrease in the hard X‐ray flux over the last years and discuss its implications. We finally discuss perspectives with Simbol‐X.

Supemovae and their remnants are the main Galactic nucleosynthesis sites and the privileged sources of Galactic cosmic rays. The youngest of such remnants can be studied through two distinct observational features: 44Ti γ‐ray lines and the hard X‐ray nonthermal continuum emission. The former gives unique information on the nucleosynthesis conditions occuring during the first stages of the explosion, while the latter provides clues on acceleration processes at supernova remnant shocks. In this contribution, we present new INTEGRAL results on Tycho, the remnant of a historical supernova, and on G1.9+0.3, which has been recently unveiled as the youngest Galactic supernova remnant. Expectations with Simbol‐X are also addressed.

The supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946 (also known as G347.3-0.5) is part of the class of remnants dominated by synchrotron emission in X-rays. It is also one of the few shell-type SNRs observed at TeV energies allowing to investigate particle acceleration at SNRs shock. Our goal is to compare spatial and spectral properties of the remnant in X- and gamma-rays to understand the nature of the TeV emission. This requires to study the remnant at the same spatial scale at both energies. To complement the non-thermal spectrum of the remnant, we attempt to provide a reliable estimate for the radio flux density. In radio, we revisited ATCA data and used HI and mid-infrared observations to disentangle the thermal from the non-thermal emission. In X-rays, we produced a new mosaic of the remnant and degraded the spatial resolution of the X-ray data to the resolution of the HESS instrument to perform spatially resolved spectroscopy at the same spatial scale in X- and gamma-rays. Radial profiles were obtained to investigate the extension of the emission at both energies. We found that part of the radio emission within the SNR contours is thermal in nature. Taking this into account, we provide new lower and upper limits for the integrated synchrotron flux of the remnant at 1.4 GHz of 22 Jy and 26 Jy respectively. In X-rays, we obtained the first full coverage of RX J1713.7-3946 with XMM-Newton. The spatial variation of the photon index seen at small scale in X-rays is smeared out at HESS resolution. A non-linear correlation between the X- and gamma-ray fluxes of the type Fx \propto Fg^2.41 is found., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. Important results achieved over the last years on supernova remnants, planetary nebulae and superbubbles are briefly reviewed in the context of X-ray observations.
