Abstract: The flat spectrum radio quasar 4C 38.41 showed a significant increase of its radio flux density during the period 2012 March - 2015 August which correlates with gamma-ray flaring activity. Multi-frequency simultaneous VLBI observations were conducted as part of the interferometric monitoring of gamma-ray bright active galactic nuclei (iMOGABA) program and supplemented with additional monitoring observations at various bands across the electromagnetic spectrum. The epochs of the maxima for the two largest gamma-ray flares coincide with the ejection of two respective new VLBI components and the evolution of the physical properties seem to be in agreement with the shock-in-jet model. Derived synchrotron self absorption magnetic fields, of the order of 0.1 mG, do not seem to dramatically change during the flares, and are much smaller, by a factor 10,000, than the estimated equipartition magnetic fields, indicating that the source of the flare may be associated with a particle dominated emitting region.

Abstract: The flat spectrum radio quasar 1633+382 (4C~38.41) showed a significant increase of its radio flux density during the period 2012 March - 2015 August which correlates with gamma-ray flaring activity. The epochs of the maxima for the two largest gamma-ray flares coincide with the ejection of two respective new VLBI components. Analysis of the spectral energy distribution indicates a higher turnover frequency after the flaring events. The evolution of the flare in the turnover frequency - turnover flux density plane probes the adiabatic losses in agreement with the shock-in-jet model. Derived synchrotron self absorption magnetic fields, of the order of 0.1mG, do not seem to dramatically change during the flares, and are much smaller, by a factor $10^4$, than the estimated equipartition magnetic fields, indicating that the source of the flare may be associated with a particle dominated emitting region., 12 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables. 3. Critical temperature and accretion rate of outbursts in long-period dwarf novae

Abstract: Dwarf nova outbursts are nonlinear phenomena, and a time-dependent disk model is necessary to account for observations in detail. However, it is also necessary to elaborate a simpler steady-state fit to interpret observations. To know in what condition the outburst is initiated, understanding of the dwarf nova outburst is important. The parameterized, steady-state fitting formulae are suggested by Smak (Acta Astron. 52, 429 (2002); ibid 60, 83 (2010)) for the critical disk temperature and mass accretion rate above which the disk becomes thermally unstable. The fits give a single-valued temperature and accretion rate and are radius-independent whereas the observations show that the outbursts are radius-dependent phenomena of the ionizaton propagating in the disk. The fits have been tested to account for the observed outbursts only for systems with orbital periods shorter than a half day. Therefore, we examine the fits for orbital period as long as 2 days and compare the fits to the time-dependent model of a long-period dwarf nova GK Per. The fits are not much different from the time-dependent result for the critical temperature. However, the fits for the critical mass accretion rate above which the disk enters the hot state overestimate the time-dependent model for a long-period system like GK Per. The critical mass accretion rate in the intermediate state is consistent with that from the time-dependent disk model. However, the fit value should be treated as a maximum possible value below which the disk maintains the intermediate state, which is consistent with an interpretation for the observations of the Z Cam stars.

Abstract: EUSO-TA is a ground-based telescope, installed at the Telescope Array (TA) site in Black Rock Mesa, Utah, USA. This is the first detector to successfully use a Fresnel lens based optical system and multi-anode photomultipliers (64 channels per tube, 2304 channels encompassing a 10.6° × 10.6° field of view) for detection of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). The telescope is located in front of one of the fluorescence detectors of the TA experiment. Since its installation in 2013, the detector has observed several ultra-high energy cosmic ray events and, in addition, meteors. The limiting magnitude of 5.5 on summed frames (∼ 3 ms) has been established. Measurements of the UV night sky emission in different conditions and moon phases and positions have been completed. Abstract: We present multi-frequency simultaneous VLBI radio observations of the flat spectrum radio quasar 1633+382 (4C~38.41) as part of the interferometric monitoring of gamma-ray bright active galactic nuclei (iMOGABA) program combined with additional observations in radio, optical, X-rays and $\gamma-$rays carried out between the period 2012 March - 2015 August. The monitoring of this source reveals a significant long-lived increase in its activity since approximately two years in the radio bands, which correlates with a similar increase on all other bands from sub-millimeter to $\gamma-$rays. A significant correlation is also found between radio fluxes and simultaneous spectral indices during this period. The study of the discrete correlation function (DCF) indicates time lags smaller than the $\sim40$ days uncertainties among both radio bands and also high-energy bands, and a time lag of $\sim$70 days, with $\gamma-$rays leading radio. We interpret that the high-energy and radio fluxes are arising from different emitting regions, located at $1\pm12$ and $40\pm13$ pc from the central engine respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, and 5 tables. Abstract: Designed as the first mission to explore the ultra-high energy universe from space, JEM-EUSO observes the Earth’s atmosphere at night to record the ultraviolet tracks generated by the extensive air showers. We present the expected geometrical aperture and annual exposure in the nadir and tilt modes for ultra-high energy cosmic rays observation as a function of the altitude of the International Space Station. 8. Inside-out outbursts in the thermally unstable accretion disk of the neutron star microquasar Aquila X-1

Abstract: The observed features of typical, symmetric outbursts in the neutron star X-ray transient Aquila X-1 such as the rise, the plateau in the maximum, and the decay, are reproduced with a timedependent disk instability model. No external effect such as irradiation is necessary to account for the observation. In the model, a truncated inner disk radius that is more than ten times larger than the magnetically truncated one and that is plausibly appropriate to the scale proposed by hot flow models must be adopted. The model shows that such symmetric outbursts in Aql X-1 may be inside-out outbursts, while outside-in outbursts have been conjectured based on observations. The implication of the presented model, with observations, is discussed together.

Abstract: Cepheus A is the second nearest high mass star-forming region after Orion. It is characterized by the presence of several phenomena, such as a complex molecular outflow, and multiple radio continuum sources, known as HW sources. The radio continuum and water maser emission have been detected toward HW2, HW3b and HW3d regions, and all of them are considered harboring young stellar objects. In 2014, we performed KaVA observations and detected a new bright maser feature, ~700 mas apart from HW3d, which has not been detected with previous VLBI observations. The relative proper motion of the new maser feature is faster than other regions. It can be a clue for a newly forming star. Alternatively, it may be caused by outflow shock from the star-forming regions such as HW3d or HW3c.

Abstract: VLBI observation of masers is a powerful mean to understand the early evolutionary phase of massive star formation. A few different scenarios of outflow evolution in the massive protostars have been proposed, and cannot be readily examined because the precise timing of appropriate maser phenomena is difficult. In particular, it has been a matter of debate whether a well-collimated or a less-collimated outflow comes first in the very early phase of the massive protostellar evolution. Long-term, multi-epoch VLBI monitoring is probably the most important method to trace the outflow evolution. Such a monitoring of a massive star-forming region W75N(B) has been very successful. Since the first detection of the expanding water maser shell associated with the star-forming region VLA 2 of W75N(B) in 1999, the observations in 2005 and 2007 displayed that the expanding water maser shell has been evolved to well-collimated from a less collimated morphology. Observations in 2012 also confirmed such a transition. It would be a major breakthrough in our knowledge of the formation and evolution of the first stages of massive protostars. We performed multi-epoch VLBI observations in mid-2014. On the contrary to its expansion for 13 years, the maser shell at VLA 2 observed in 2014 is comparable to the size observed in 2012. The quenching of the maser shell size indicates that the previously expanding outflow has been decelerated plausibly due to the interaction with surrounding interstellar medium.

Abstract: A time-dependent disk model is presented to account for possible multiple ejection events evidenced by the radio observations of A0620-00 during the early phase of the 1975 outburst. The model is based on the prescription of a time-dependent, irradiated, thermally unstable disk. The computed optical light curve and corresponding time-dependent behavior of the mass accretion rate in the disk are compared to the observed light curves in the radio, optical and X-rays. The model outburst consists of three flares: two precursor flares and a primary flare with maximum light, in which the peaks are enhanced according to the dierent local origins in the disk. In the second precursor and primary flares, the mass accretion rate of all the disk exceeds 10 percent of the Eddington value. Based on the result of the model, we show that the proposed multiple jet ejections seem to be related to multiple flares originating from a time-varying mass accretion rate in a thermally unstable disk.

Abstract: The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory pathfinder (UFFO-p) is a new space mission dedicated to detect Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and rapidly follow their afterglows in order to provide early optical/ultraviolet measurements. A GRB location is determined in a few seconds by the UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger telescope (UBAT) employing the coded mask imaging technique and the detector combination of Yttrium Oxyorthosilicate (YSO) scintillating crystals and multi-anode photomultiplier tubes. Abstract: The current paradigm of star formation through accretion disks, and magnetohydrodynamically driven gas ejections, predicts the development of collimated outflows, rather than expansion without any preferential direction. We present radio continuum observations of the massive protostar W75N(B)-VLA 2, showing that it is a thermal, collimated ionized wind and that it has evolved in 18 years from a compact source into an elongated one. This is consistent with the evolution of the associated expanding water-vapor maser shell, which changed from a nearly circular morphology, tracing an almost isotropic outflow, to an elliptical one outlining collimated motions. Abstract: The Interferometric Monitoring of Gamma-ray Bright Active galactic nuclei (iMOGABA) program provides not only simultaneous multifrequency observations of bright gamma-ray detected active galactic nuclei (AGN), but also covers the highest Very Large Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) frequencies ever being systematically monitored, up to 129 GHz. However, observation and imaging of weak sources at the highest observed frequencies is very challenging. In the second paper in this series, we evaluate the viability of the frequency phase transfer technique to iMOGABA in order to obtain larger coherence time at the higher frequencies of this program (86 and 129 GHz) and image additional sources that were not detected using standard techniques. Abstract: Some effects of irradiation on time-dependent accretion-disk models for black hole X-ray novae are presented. Two types of irradiation are considered: direct irradiation from the inner hot disk and indirect irradiation as might be reflected by a corona or chromosphere above the disk. The shadowing effect of the time-dependent evolution of the disk height and consequent blocking of the outer disk by the inner and middle portions of the disk from the direct irradiation is included. The direct irradiation of the disk by inner layers where the soft X-ray flux is generated is found to have only a small effect on the outer disk because of shadowing. Mild indirect irradiation that flattens, but otherwise does not affect the light curve substantially, still has interesting non-linear effects on the structure of the disk as heating and cooling waves propagate. The irradiated disks do not always make simple transitions between the hot and cold states, but can linger at intermediate temperatures or even return temporarily to the hot state, depending on the irradiation and the activity in adjacent portions of the disk., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: We present a radio observation of microquasar Cyg X-3 during an X-ray state transition from ultrasoft to hard state in the 2007 May$-$June flare using the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) at 22 GHz. During the transition, a short-lived mini-flare of ${\lesssim}3$ hr was detected prior to the major flare. In such a transition, a jet ejection is believed to occur, but there have been no direct observations to support it. An analysis of Gaussian fits to the observed visibility amplitudes shows a time variation of the source axis, or a structural change, during the mini-flare. Our model fits, together with other multiwavelength observations in the radio, soft, and hard X-rays, and the shock-in-jet models for other flaring activities at GHz wavebands, suggest a high possibility of synchrotron flares during the mini-flare, indicative of a predominant contribution from jet activity. Abstract: Accretion disk thermal instability models have been successful in accounting for the basic observations of dwarf novae and the steady behavior of nova-like systems. Models for the dwarf-nova like variability of the old nova and intermediate polar GK Per give good agreement with the burst amplitude, profile and recurrence time in the optical and UV. A month-long “precursor plateau” in the UV is predicted for the expected 1992 outburst prior to the rise to maximum in the optical and UV. The models for the time scales of the outbursts and corresponding UV spectra at maximum are consistent with the inner edge of the accretion disk being essentially constant between quiescence and outburst and a factor of four larger than the corotation radius. These conclusions represent a challenge to the standard theory of magnetic accretion. Disk instability models have also given a good representation of the soft X-ray and optical outbursts of the X-ray novae A0620-00 and GS2000+25. Formation of coronae above the disk, heated by magneto-acoustic flux from the disk, may account for the temporal and spectral properties of the hard X-ray and gamma ray emission of related sources such as Cyg X-1, GS 2023+33 (V404 Cyg), 1E 1740.7-2942 (the “Galactic Center” Einstein Source), and GS 1124-683 (Nova Muscae).

Abstract: Microquasars, nearby stellar‐scale analogy of quasars, are producing jets at speeds very close to the speed of light up to 0.98 c. Microquasars are also accreting transient or persistent X‐ray binaries. For a decade since its discovery, the phenomena of microquasars have had a great deal of attention. The observation of transient flares and accompanied jet phenomena is one of the highlights in the fields of X‐ray, radio and, very recently, infrared astronomy. The recent observations have indicated that the superluminal jets probably are the common nature of the black hole X‐ray binaries and, in part, of the neutron star binary sources. The recent development in observational techniques has made it possible to study detailed feature of jet phenomena. In the radio the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) is required to map images of jets. The first Korean VLBI Network (KVN), recently proposed for the mm‐wave multi‐channel receiver system of 2.5, 8.5, 23, 43, 86–129 GHz, therefore, can be a promising too...

Abstract: I discuss the outburst phenomena in binary X-ray transients, emphasizing the phenomena of the secondary flare, or reflare, based on implicit, time-dependent, irradiated, accretion disk instability models. I examine the role of irradiation, generated from the central compact region and corona, or disk atmosphere, to the disk structure and outburst evolution in black hole X-ray transients. The cause of the primary rise in X-ray nova outburst is plausibly due to the disk instability associated with the ionization of hydrogen and helium, similar to the rise observed in dwarf nova outbursts. Abstract: We study the disk‐instability and the effect of irradiation on accretion disks around black holes in x‐ray novae outbursts. The disk instability theory is proposed as the mechanism for the cause of outbursts in x‐ray novae. The mass flow rate into the black hole predicted by the disk instability theory is consistent with observations in both outburst and quiescence. Furthermore, a strong correlation between the optical and soft x‐rays in outburst can be naturally explained by the disk instability theory. We adopt a simple model for the direct irradiation of the whole disk by x‐rays from the innermost disk and examine its effects on the outburst in the context of the disk instability model. The effect of radiation influences both optical and soft x‐ray light curves and the disk evolution. In outburst, the disk becomes brighter and hotter in both optical and soft x‐ray bands, and both the duration of the outburst and the recurrence time are lengthened.

Abstract: We study the tidal interaction between a supermassive black hole and a star. The brightening of an accretion disk around a supermassive black hole as a consequence of the tidal disruption of the star is investigated with the Newtonian α‐disk model, although relativistic effects are expected to be substantial. A large mass, 108–109 M⊙, for the supermassive black hole is required to produce possible optical flares on time scales of a few years. The numerical results imply that only a few percent of the mass of a disrupted star forms a very thin layer of accretion disk outside the marginally stable orbit. We suggest that the formation of such a thin disk could be interesting for producing potentially observable optical thermal flares with characteristic time scales on the order of a few years.

Abstract: The correlation between the disk instability model for the 1981-1989 optical outbursts of the intermediate polar GK Per and the accompanying X-ray emission is examined, and the self-consistency of the combined optical-X-ray model is investigated. Special attention is given to the nature of the transition in the X-ray emission due to the time-dependent accretion rates in the simple column accretion model. The large variation in the efficiency of hard X-ray production is explained.

Abstract: The present study reproduces the observed recurrence time scales and duration of the 1981-1989 dwarf nova-type outbursts of the intermediate polar GK Per with a model based on the time-dependent disk instability model. The model gives approximately symmetric (type B, inside-out) outbursts, as observed. This agreement suggests that the outbursts cannot result from a mass transfer instability. A modest variation of the mass transfer rate from the companion is sufficient to account for the variable outburst recurrence time scale. Contamination from the companion and the hot spot dominate the light from the disk except during a bright outburst. An intermediate temperature stagnation wave followed by a full heating wave is consistent with the observed rapid rise and double-peaked structure in the UV and optical light curves. It is argued that the hard X-ray efficiency is dime-dependent, and it is found to be much smaller in outburst than in quiescence.

Abstract: The spectral evolution of accretion disks in X-ray binaries containing black holes is studied, based on the disk instability model. The thermal transition of the outer portions of the disk controls the mass flow rate into the inner portions of the disk, thus modulating the soft X-ray flux which is thought to arise from the inner disk. Calculated soft X-ray spectra are consistent with the observations of the X-ray transient A0620 - 00 and especially ASM 2000 + 25, the soft X-ray spectra of which are well fitted by blackbody radiation with a fixed inner edge of the disk, Rin, and with monotonically decreasing temperature at Rin with time. Since the gas pressure is always dominant over the radiation pressure during the decay in these models, a two-temperature region is difficult to create. Instead, it is suggested that hard X-rays are generated in a hot (kT greater than 10 keV) accretion disk corona above the cool (kT less than 1 keV) disk.
