We present HST/ACS narrow-band images of a low-z sample of 19 3C radio galaxies to study the H$\alpha$ and [OIII] emissions from the narrow-line region (NLR). Based on nuclear emission line ratios, we divide the sample into High and Low Excitation Galaxies (HEGs and LEGs). We observe different line morphologies, extended line emission on kpc scale, large [OIII]/H$\alpha$ scatter across the galaxies, and a radio-line alignment. In general, HEGs show more prominent emission line properties than LEGs: larger, more disturbed, more luminous, and more massive regions of ionized gas with slightly larger covering factors. We find evidence of correlations between line luminosities and (radio and X-ray) nuclear luminosities. All these results point to a main common origin, the active nucleus, which ionize the surrounding gas. However, the contribution of additional photoionization mechanism (jet shocks and star formation) are needed to account for the different line properties of the two classes. A relationship between the accretion, photoionization and feedback modes emerges from this study. For LEGs (hot-gas accretors), the synchrotron emission from the jet represents the main source of ionizing photons. The lack of cold gas and star formation in their hosts accounts for the moderate ionized-gas masses and sizes. For HEGs (cold-gas accretors), an ionizing continuum from a standard disk and shocks from the powerful jets are the main sources of photoionization, with the contribution from star formation. These components, combined with the large reservoir of cold/dust gas brought from a recent merger, account for the properties of their extended emission-line regions., Comment: accepted for publication on ApJ (22 pages, 12 figures)

The physical origin of the X-ray emission in powerful quasar jets has been a long-standing mystery. Though these jets start out on the sub-pc scale as highly relativistic flows, we do not have any direct measurement of their speeds on the kpc scale, where the vast distances from the core necessitate in situ particle acceleration. If the jets remain highly relativistic on kpc scales, then the X-rays could be due to inverse-Compton upscattering of CMB photons. However, the IC/CMB explanation predicts a high level of gamma-ray emission, which should be detectible by the Fermi/LAT. We have searched for and ruled out this emission at a high level of significance for the well-known sources 3C 273 and PKS 0637-752, suggesting the X-rays are synchrotron, though of unknown origin. These recent results with Fermi also suggest that the kpc-scale jets in powerful quasars are significantly slower than have been presumed under the IC/CMB model. We present a homogeneous and 92 % complete dataset of optical nuclear spectra for the 113 3CR radio sources with redshifts < 0.3, obtained with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. For these sources we could obtain uniform and uninterrupted coverage of the key spectroscopic optical diagnostics. The observed sample, including powerful classical FR II radio-galaxies and FR I, together spanning four orders of magnitude in radio-luminosity, provides a broad representation of the spectroscopic properties of radio galaxies. In this first paper we present an atlas of the spectra obtained, provide measurements of the diagnostic emission line ratios, and identify active nuclei with broad line emission. These data will be used in follow-up papers to address the connection between the optical spectral characteristics and the multiwavelength properties of the sample., Accepted for publication in A&A. We use the emission line measurements of 3CR radio sources with redshift < 0.3, to explore their spectroscopic properties. The 3CR sources show a bimodal distribution of Excitation Index, a new spectroscopic indicator that measures the relative intensity of low and high excitation lines. This unveils the presence of two main sub-populations of radio-loud AGN, High and Low Excitation Galaxies (HEG and LEG, respectively). All broad-line objects are HEG from the point of view of their narrow emission line ratios and all HEG are FRII radio-galaxies with log L(178) [erg/s] > 32.8. Conversely LEG cover the whole range of radio power encompassed by this 3CR subsample (30.7 < log L(178) < 35.4) and they are of both FRI and FRII type. The brightest LEG are all FRII. HEG and LEG obey to two (quasi) linear correlations between the optical line and extended radio luminosities, with HEG being brighter than LEG in the [OIII] line by a factor of ~10. HEG and LEG are offset also in a plane that compares the black hole mass and the ionizing nuclear luminosity. However, although HEG are associated with higher nuclear luminosities, we find LEG among the brightest radio sources of the sample and with a clear FRII morphology, indistinguishable from those seen in HEG. This suggests that LEG are not simply objects with a lower level of accretion. We speculate that the differences between LEG and HEG are related to a different mode of accretion: LEG are powered by hot gas, while HEG require the presence of cold accreting material. The high temperature of the accreting gas in LEG accounts for the lack of "cold" structures (i.e. molecular torus and Broad Line Region), for the reduced radiative output of the accretion disk, and for the lower gas excitation. We have made thirteen positive identifications of near-ultraviolet (NUV) transient sources in the giant elliptical galaxy M87 using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We give a representative sample of the light curves that we derive for these transients, and based on their characteristics we identify them as classical novae candidates. We obtain a hard lower limit for the nova rate in M87 of 64 novae per year. Our results suggest an enhancement on the frequency of nova events towards the nucleus of the galaxy. No correlation is found with either jet activity or the position of present day globular clusters., Comment: accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

Radio lobes inflated by active galactic nuclei at the centers of clusters are a promising candidate for halting condensation in clusters with short central cooling times because they are common in such clusters. In order to test the AGN-heating hypothesis, we obtained Chandra observations of two clusters with short central cooling times yet no evidence for AGN activity: Abell 1650 and Abell 2244. The cores of these clusters indeed appear systematically different from cores with more prominent radio emission. They do not have significant central temperature gradients, and their central entropy levels are markedly higher than in clusters with stronger radio emission, corresponding to central cooling times ~ 1 Gigayear. Also, there is no evidence for fossil X-ray cavities produced by an earlier episode of AGN heating. We suggest that either (1) the central gas has not yet cooled to the point at which feedback is necessary to prevent it from condensing, possibly because it is conductively stabilized, or (2) the gas experienced a major heating event $\gtrsim 1$ Gyr in the past and has not required feedback since then. The fact that these clusters with no evident feedback have higher central entropy and therefore longer central cooling times than clusters with obvious AGN feedback strongly suggests that AGNs supply the feedback necessary to suppress condensation in clusters with short central cooling times., Comment: ApJ Letter, in press

We present a Hubble Space Telescope image of the FRII radio galaxy 3C 401, obtained at 1.6 microns with the NICMOS camera in which we identify the infrared counterpart of the brightest region of the radio jet. The jet has a complex radio structure and brightens where bending occurs, most likely as a result of relativistic beaming. We analyze archival data in the radio, optical and X-ray bands and we derive its spectral energy distribution. Differently from all of the previously known optical extragalactic jets, the jet in 3C401 is not detected in the X-rays even in a long 48ksec X-ray Chandra exposure and the infrared emission dominates the overall SED. We propose that the dominant radiation mechanism of this jet is synchrotron. The low X-ray emission is then caused by two different effects: i) the lack of any strong external photon field and ii) the shape of the electron distribution. This affects the location of the synchrotron peak in the SED, resulting in a sharp cut-off at energies lower than the X-rays. Thus 3C401 shows a new type of jet which has intermediate spectral properties between those of FRI, which are dominated by synchrotron emission up to X-ray energies, and FRII/QSO, which show a strong high-energy emission due to inverse-Compton scattering of external photons. This might be a clue for the presence of a continuous ``sequence'' in the properties of large scale jets, in analogy with the ``blazar sequence'' already proposed for sub-pc scale jets., 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph ultraviolet image of the FR I radio galaxy 3C 270 shows the presence of a jetlike structure emerging from the position of the nucleus. This feature, which represents the first jetlike component ever detected in the UV in a radio galaxy with jets lying almost on the plane of the sky, has the same position angle as the jet in the radio and X-ray images. We propose two different scenarios for the origin of the emission: (1) nonthermal synchrotron from a mildly relativistic component of the jet and (2) scattered light from the nucleus, where a BL Lac source may be hosted. Either of these pictures would have important consequences for the active galactic nuclei unification schemes and for our knowledge of the jet structure. In the Chandra image, a faint counterjet is also present. From a comparative analysis of the HST images and Chandra X-ray spectrum, we find that the nucleus is only moderately obscured. The obscuring structure might well reside in the geometrically thin dark disk observed on large scales. This fits the scenario in which a standard geometrically and optically thick torus is not present in FR I radio galaxies.

We present results of HST observations of the radio galaxy 3C 299. The broad-band F702W (R) and F555W (V) images (WFPC2/PC) show an elliptical galaxy, with a comet-like structure extending to the NE in the radio jet direction. The [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emission line map, shows a bi-conical structure centered on the nucleus, that overlaps the structure found in the broad-band filters. The radio core coincides with the center of the bi-conical structure and the radio axes are aligned with the direction of the cones. These data show clear evidence of a strong interaction between the radio jet and the NE morphology of the galaxy. We show evidence that this NE region is an ENLR; the line-ratio diagnostics show that models involving gas shocked by the radio-jet plus ionization from a precursor HII region, produced itself by the ionizing photons of the postshocked gas on the preshocked gas provide a good match to the observations. We investigate the spatial behavior of the ionizing parameter $U$, by determining the [OIII]/[OII] line ratio which is sensitive to the change of the ionization parameter, and trace its behavior over the ENLR along the radio jet direction. We find that [OIII]/[OII] does not follow a simple dilution model, but rather that it is approximately constant over a large range of distance from the nucleus thus requiring a local source of ionization which seems to be compatible with the shock models driven by the radio jet., Comment: 17 pages, 9 Postscript figures, ApJ accepted, uses aaspp.sty

We present images taken with the Wide Field Planetary Camera (WFPC-2) on the Hubble Space Telescope of 43 quasars selected from the 3CR radio catalog. The redshift range of the targets is large --- 0.3 < z < 2. These data were taken in the course of a large program that imaged 267 3CR radio galaxies and quasars using the HST in "snapshot mode". Each quasar was centered on the Planetary Camera (PC1) and was imaged through the F702W filter (bandpass similar to Cousins R), typically for 5 and 10 minutes. Our analysis suggests that the quasar fuzz contributes from, 36 pages (latex), 7 figures (19 separate gif files for maximum inconvenience), accepted for publication in the August 1999 volume of the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series
