The IceCube collaboration reports a detection of extra-terrestrial neutrinos. The isotropy and flavor content of the signal, and the coincidence, within current uncertainties, of the 50 TeV to 2 PeV flux and the spectrum with the Waxman-Bahcall bound, suggest a cosmological origin of the neutrinos, related to the sources of ultra-high energy, $>10^{10}$ GeV, cosmic-rays (UHECR). The most natural explanation of the UHECR and neutrino signals is that both are produced by the same population of cosmological sources, producing CRs (likely protons) at a similar rate, $E^2d\dot{n}/dE\propto E^{0}$, over the [$1$ PeV,$10^{11}$ GeV] energy range, and residing in "calorimetric" environments, like galaxies with high star formation rate, in which $E/Z, To appear in "Neutrino Astronomy- Current status, future prospects", Eds. The flux, spectrum and angular distribution of the excess neutrino signal detected by IceCube between 50TeV and 2PeV are inconsistent with those expected for Galactic sources. The coincidence of the excess, $E_��^2��_��=3.6\pm1.2\times10^{-8}(GeV/ cm^2 sr s)$, with the Waxman-Bahcall (WB) bound, $E_��^2��_{WB}=3.4\times10^{-8}(GeV/cm^2 sr s)$, is probably a clue to the origin of IceCube's neutrinos. The most natural explanation of this coincidence is that both the neutrino excess and the ultra-high energy, $>10^{19}$ eV, cosmic-ray (UHECR) flux are produced by the same population of cosmologically distributed sources, producing CRs, likely protons, at a similar rate, $E^2 dQ/dE=0.5\times10^{44}(erg/Mpc^3yr)$ (at z=0), across a wide range of energies, from $10^{15}$ eV to $>10^{20}$ eV, and residing in environments (such as starburst galaxies) in which CRs of rigidity $E/Z< 10^{17}$ eV lose much of their energy to pion production. Identification of the neutrino sources will allow one to identify the UHECR accelerators, to resolve open questions related to the accelerator models, and to study neutrino properties (related e.g. to flavor oscillations and coupling to gravity) with an accuracy many orders of magnitude better than is currently possible. The most promising method for identifying the sources is by association of a neutrino with an electromagnetic signal accompanying a transient event responsible for its generation. Many of the astrophysical sources and violent phenomena observed in our Universe are potential emitters of gravitational waves (GW) and high-energy neutrinos (HEN). Both GWs and HENs may escape very dense media and travel unaffected over cosmological distances, carrying information from the innermost regions of the astrophysical engines. Such messengers could also reveal new, hidden sources that have not been observed by conventional photon-based astronomy. Coincident observation of GWs and HENs may thus play a critical role in multimessenger astronomy. This is particularly true at the present time owing to the advent of a new generation of dedicated detectors: IceCube, ANTARES, VIRGO and LIGO. Given the complexity of the instruments, a successful joint analysis of this data set will be possible only if the expertise and knowledge of the data is shared between the two communities. This review aims at providing an overview of both theoretical and experimental state-of-the-art and perspectives for such a GW+HEN multimessenger astronomy., Comment: Revised version, to appear in Reviews of Modern Physics (Colloquium Series). Cosmic-rays with energies exceeding 10^{19} eV are referred to as Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs). The sources of these particles and their acceleration mechanism are unknown, and for many years have been the issue of much debate. The first part of this review describes the main constraints, that are implied by UHECR observations on the properties of candidate UHECR sources, the candidate sources, and the related main open questions. In order to address the challenges of identifying the UHECR sources and of probing the physical mechanisms driving them, a "multi-messenger" approach will most likely be required, combining electromagnetic, cosmic-ray and neutrino observations. The second part of the review is devoted to a discussion of high energy neutrino astronomy. It is shown that detectors, which are currently under construction, are expected to reach the effective mass required for the detection of high energy extra-Galactic neutrino sources, and may therefore play a key role in the near future in resolving the main open questions. Although the link between long Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) and supernovae (SNe) has been established, hitherto there have been no observations of the beginning of a supernova explosion and its intimate link to a GRB. In particular, we do not know however how a GRB jet emerges from the star surface nor how a GRB progenitor explodes. Here we report on observations of the close GRB060218 and its connection to SN2006aj. In addition to the classical non-thermal emission, GRB060218 shows a thermal component in its X-ray spectrum, which cools and shifts into the optical/UV band as time passes. We interpret these features as arising from the break out of a shock driven by a mildly relativistic shell into the dense wind surrounding the progenitor. Our observations allow us for the first time to catch a SN in the act of exploding, to directly observe the shock break-out and to provide strong evidence that the GRB progenitor was a Wolf-Rayet star., Comment: 12 pages, 3 color figures (final version). The realization that the total energy of GRBs is correlated with their jet break angles motivates the search for a similar relation between the peak luminosity, $L$, and the jet break angles, $L\propto\theta^{-2}$. Such a relation implies that the GRB luminosity function determines the angular distribution. We re-derive the GRB luminosity function using the BATSE peak flux distribution and compare the predicted distribution with the observed redshift distribution. The luminosity function can be approximated by a broken power law with a break peak luminosity of $4.4 \times 10^{51}$ erg/sec, a typical jet angle of 0.12 rad and a local GRB rate of $0.44 h_{65}^{3}$ Gpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$. The angular distribution implied by $L\propto\theta^{-2}$ agrees well with the observed one, and implies a correction factor to the local rate due to beaming of $75\pm25$ (instead of 500 as commonly used). The inferred overall local GRB rate is $33\pm11 h_{65}^{3}$ Gpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$. The luminosity function and angle distribution obtained within the universal structured jet model, where the angular distribution is essentially $\propto \theta$ and hence the luminosity function must be $\propto L^{-2}$, deviate from the observations at low peak fluxes and, correspondingly, at large angles. The identification of type Ib/c supernovae as GRB progenitors is motivated by the association of GRB980425 with SN1998bw and of GRB030329 with SN2003dh. While the gamma-ray luminosity of GRB030329 was typical to cosmological GRBs, the luminosity of the nearby (40 Mpc) GRB980425 was ~5 orders of magnitude lower. The large luminosity difference is commonly explained by hypothesizing that either SNe Ib/c produce two different classes of GRBs, or that GRB980425 was a typical cosmological GRB jet viewed off-axis. In the latter scenario, strong radio emission, ~10^{30} erg/s Hz, is expected at ~1 yr delay due to jet deceleration to sub-relativistic speed, as observed from GRB970508. The radio luminosity of SN1998bw was 3 orders of magnitude lower than this value. We show that the low radio flux may be consistent with the off-axis jet interpretation, if the density of the wind surrounding the progenitor is lower than typically expected, \dot{m}=(\dot{M}/10^{-5} M_sun/yr)/(v/10^3 km/s)~0.1 instead of \dot{m}>=1. The lower value of \dot{m} is consistent with the observed radio emission from the supernova shock driven into the wind. This interpretation predicts transition to sub-relativistic expansion at ~10 yr delay, with current \~1 mJy 10GHz flux and m_V~23 optical flux, and with ~10 mas angular source size. It also implies that in order to search for the signature of off-axis GRBs associated with nearby Ib/c supernovae, follow up observations should be carried on a multi-yr time scale., 13 pages, 1 figure; 2 references added; ApJ, in press

A pedagogical derivation is presented of the ``fireball'' model of gamma-ray bursts, according to which the observable effects are due to the dissipation of the kinetic energy of a relativistically expanding wind, a ``fireball.'' The main open questions are emphasized, and key afterglow observations, that provide support for this model, are briefly discussed. The relativistic outflow is, most likely, driven by the accretion of a fraction of a solar mass onto a newly born (few) solar mass black hole. The observed radiation is produced once the plasma has expanded to a scale much larger than that of the underlying ``engine,'' and is therefore largely independent of the details of the progenitor, whose gravitational collapse leads to fireball formation. Several progenitor scenarios, and the prospects for discrimination among them using future observations, are discussed. Several high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects such as Mrk 501 are strong TeV emitters. However, a significant fraction of the TeV gamma rays emitted are likely to be absorbed in interactions with the diffuse IR background, yielding electron-positron pairs. Hence, the observed TeV spectrum must be steeper than the intrinsic one. Using the recently derived intrinsic $\gamma$-ray spectrum of Mrk 501 during its 1997 high state, we study the inverse-Compton scattering of cosmic microwave photons by the resulting electron-positron pairs, which implies the existence of a hitherto undiscovered GeV emission. The typical duration of the GeV emission is determined by the flaring activity time and the energy-dependent magnetic deflection time. We numerically calculate the scattered photon spectrum for different intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) strengths, and find a spectral turnover and flare duration at GeV energies which are dependent on the field strength. We also estimate the scattered photon flux in the quiescent state of Mrk 501. The GeV flux levels predicted are consistent with existing EGRET upper limits, and should be detectable above the synchrotron -- self Compton (SSC) component with the {\em Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope} ({\em GLAST}) for IGMFs $\lesssim 10^{-16}$ G, as expected in voids. We discuss the possibility that microquasar jets may be powerful emitters of TeV neutrinos. We estimate the neutrino fluxes produced by photopion production in the jets of a sample of identified microquasars and microquasar candidates, for which available data enables rough determination of the jet parameters. We demonstrate that in several of the sources considered, the neutrino flux at Earth, produced in events similar to those observed, can exceed the detection threshold of a km^2 neutrino detector. Sources with bulk Lorentz factors larger than those characteristic of the sample considered here, directed along our line of sight may be very difficult to resolve at radio wavelengths and hence may be difficult to identify as microqusar candidates. We show that the collapsar model of gamma-ray bursts results in a series of successive shocks and rarefaction waves propagating in the "cork" of stellar material being pushed ahead of the jet, as it emerges from the massive stellar progenitor. These shocks result in a series of characteristic, increasingly shorter and harder thermal X-ray pulses, as well as a non-thermal gamma-ray pulse, which precede the usual non-thermal MeV gamma-rays. We consider jets escaping from both compact (CO or He dwarf) and blue supergiant stellar progenitors. The period, fluence and hardness of the pulses serves as a diagnostic for the size and density of the outer envelope of the progenitor star., Comment: Illustrative figures and expanded discussion of derivations added. The prompt optical flash recently detected accompanying GRB990123 suggests that, for at least some GRBs, gamma-ray emission is accompanied by prompt optical-UV emission with luminosity L(1-7.5eV)=10^{49}(\Delta\Omega/4\pi)erg/s, where \Delta\Omega is the solid angle into which gamma-ray and optical-UV emission is beamed. Such an optical-UV flash can destroy dust in the beam by sublimation out to an appreciable distance, approximately 10 pc, and may clear the dust out of as much as 10^7(\Delta\Omega/4\pi)M_sun of molecular cloud material on an apparent time scale of 10 seconds. Detection of time dependent extinction on this time scale would therefore provide strong constraints on the GRB source environment. Dust destruction implies that existing, or future, observations of not-heavily-reddened fireballs are not inconsistent with GRBs being associated with star forming regions. In this case, however, if gamma-ray emission is highly beamed, the expanding fireball would become reddened on a 1 week time scale. We present radio observations of the gamma-ray burster GRB 970228 made with the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) spanning a range of postburst timescales from one to 300 days. A search for a time-variable radio source was conducted covering an area which included a fading X-ray source and an optical transient, both of which are thought to be the long wavelength counterparts to the gamma-ray burst. At the position of the optical transient sensitive limits between 10 uJy and 1 mJy can be placed on the absence of a radio counterpart to GRB 970228 between 1.4 and 240 GHz. We apply a simple formulation of a fireball model which has been used with some success to reproduce the behavior of the optical and X-ray light curves. Using this model we conclude that the radio non-detections are consistent with the peak flux density of the afterglow lying between 20-40 uJy and it requires that the optical flux peaked between 4 and 16 hours after the burst., ApJ Let (submitted)
