Search

We present an analysis of the extreme obscuration variability observed during an XMM-Newton 5-days continuous monitoring of the AGN in NGC 1365. The source was in a reflection-dominated state in the first ~1.5 days, then a strong increase of the 7-10 keV emission was observed in ~10 hours, followed by a symmetric decrease. The spectral analysis of the different states clearly shows that this variation is due to an uncovering of the X-ray source. From this observation we estimate a size of the X-ray source D_S<10^13 cm, a distance of the obscuring clouds R~10^16 cm and a density n~10^11 cm^{-3}. These values suggest that the X-ray absorption/reflection originate from the broad line region clouds. This is also supported by the resolved width of the iron narrow Kalpha emission line, consistent with the width of the broad Hbeta line., Comment: 5 Pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

This paper reports on two XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy H0557-385 obtained in 2006, which show the source at an historical low flux state, more than a factor of 10 lower than a previous XMM-Newton look in 2002. The low flux spectrum presents a strong Fe Kalpha line associated to a Compton reflection continuum. An additional spectral line around 6.6 keV is required to fit Kalpha emission from Fe XXV. The spectral curvature below 6 keV implies obscuration by neutral gas with a column density of 8*10^{23}cm^{-2} partially covering the primary emission, which still contributes for a few percent of the soft X-ray emission. Absorption by ionised material on the line of sight is required to fit the deep trough below 1 keV. The comparison of the two spectral states shows that the flux transition is to be ascribed entirely to intervening line-of-sight clouds with high column density., Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication on MNRAS Letters

We report on the X-ray observation of the Seyfert 1 ESO323-G077 performed with XMM-Newton. The spectra show a complex spectrum with conspicuous absorption and emission features. The continuum emission can be modelled with a power law with an index of 1.99+/-0.02 in the whole XMM-Newton energy band, marginally consistent with typical values of Type-I objects. An absorption component with an uncommonly high equivalent Hydrogen column, n_H=5.82(+0.12/-0.11)x10^22 cm-2, is affecting the soft part of the spectrum. Additionally, two warm absorption components are also present. The lower ionised one has an ionisation parameter of Log(U)=2.14(+0.06/-0.07) and an outflowing velocity of v=3200(+600/-200) km/s. Two absorption lines located at ~6.7 and ~7.0 keV can be modelled with the highly ionised absorber. The ionisation parameter and outflowing velocity of the gas measured are Log(U)=3.26(+0.19/-0.15) and v=1700(+600/-400) km/s, respectively. Four emission lines were also detected in the soft energy band. The most likely explanation for these emission lines is that they are associated with an outflowing gas with a velocity of ~2000 km/s. The data suggest that the same gas which is causing the absorption could also being responsible of these emission features. Finally, the spectrum shows the presence of a relativistic iron emission line likely originated in the accretion disc of a Kerr BH with an inclination of ~25 deg. We propose a model to explain the observed X-ray properties which invokes the presence of a two-phase outflow with cone-like structure and a velocity of the order of 2,000-4,000 km/s. The inner layer of the cone would be less ionised, or even neutral, than the outer layer. The inclination angle would be lower than the opening angle of the outflowing cone., Comment: 11 pages, accepted in MNRAS

We present the analysis of four XMM-Newton observations of the narrow-line quasar PG 1543+489 at z=0.400 carried out over a rest-frame time-scale of about three years. The X-ray spectrum is characterized by a broad, relativistic iron K_alpha emission line and a steep photon index, which can be both explained by a ionized reflection model, where the source of X-ray photons is presumably very close to the black hole. If this were the case, strong light-bending effects are expected, and actually they provide the most plausible explanation for the large equivalent width (EW=3.1+/-0.8 keV in the source rest frame) of the iron line. Although the light-bending model provides a good description of the X-ray data of PG 1543+489, it is not possible to rule out an absorption model, where obscuring matter partially covers the X-ray source. The nature and origin of the soft X-ray excess in radio quiet AGN is still an open issue. The interpretation in terms of thermal disc emission has been challanged by the discovery of the constancy of the effective temperature despite the wide range of Black Hole masses of the observed sources. Alternative models are reflection from ionized matter and absorption in a relativistically smeared wind. We analyzed XMM-Newton observations of four luminous radio quiet AGN with the aim of characterising their main properties and in particular the soft excess. Different spectral models for the soft excess were tried: thermal disc emission, Comptonization, ionized reflection, relativistically smeared winds. Comptonization of thermal emission and the smeared winds provide the best fits, but the other models also provide acceptable fits. All models, however, return parameters very similar from source to source, despite the large differences in luminosities, Black Hole masses and Eddington ratios. Moreover, the smeared wind model require very large smearing velocities. The UV to X-ray fluxes ratios are very different, but do not correlate with any other parameter. No fully satisfactory explanation for the soft X-ray excess is found. The Spitzer IRAC camera is an ideal instrument to study both the ISM and stellar structure in nearby galaxies; two of its channels trace the old stellar disk with little extinction and the 8 micron channel is dominated by the smallest dust grains (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, PAHs). Dalcanton et al. (2004) probed the link between the appearance of dust lanes and the disk stability. In a sample of bulge-less disks they show how in massive disks the ISM collapses into the characteristic thin dust lane. Less massive disks are gravitationally stable and their dust morphology is fractured. The transition occurs at 120 km/s for bulgeless disks. We report results on a 40 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Type 2 quasar 3C 234. Optical spectropolarimetric data have demonstrated the presence of a hidden broad-line region in this powerful (M_V <~ -24.2 after reddening and starlight correction) narrow-line FRII radio galaxy. Our analysis is aimed at investigating the X-ray spectral properties of this peculiar source which have remained poorly known so far. We analyze the 0.5--10 keV spectroscopic data collected by the EPIC cameras in 2006. The X-ray spectrum of this radio-loud quasar is typical of a local Compton-thin Seyfert 2 galaxy. It exhibits strong absorption (Nh~3.5 x 10^{23} cm^{-2}) and a narrow, neutral Fe Kalpha emission line with an equivalent width of ~140+/-40 eV. Our observation also reveals that the soft portion of the spectrum is characterized by strong emission lines with a very low level of scattered primary continuum. A possible explanation of these features in terms of thermal emission from a two-temperature collisionally ionized plasma emission seems to be unlikely due to the high luminosity estimated for this component (L(0.5-2) ~ 6 x 10^{42} erg/s). It is likely that most of the soft X-ray emission originates from a photoionized plasma as commonly observed in obscured, radio-quiet Seyfert-like AGNs. This X-ray observation has definitively confirmed the presence of a hidden quasar in 3C 234. The line-rich spectrum and the steepness of the hard X-ray continuum (Gamma ~ 1.7) found in this source weaken the hypothesis that the bulk ofthe X-ray emission in radio-loud AGNs with high excitation optical lines arises from jet non-thermal emission., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

We report on simultaneous optical and X-ray observations of the Seyfert galaxy, NGC3147. The XMM-Newton spectrum shows that the source is unabsorbed in the X-rays ($N_H<5\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$). On the other hand, no broad lines are present in the optical spectrum. The origin of this optical/X-rays misclassification (with respect to the Unification Model) cannot be attributed to variability, since the observations in the two bands are simultaneous. Moreover, a Compton-thick nature of the object can be rejected on the basis of the low equivalent width of the iron K$\alpha$ line ($\simeq130$ eV) and the large ratio between the 2-10 keV and the [OIII] fluxes. It seems therefore inescapable to conclude that NGC3147 intrinsically lacks the Broad Line Region (BLR), making it the first "true" Seyfert 2., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We present the results on an XMM-Newton systematic analysis of a sample of nine Seyfert 1 galaxies. When observed in polarised light, the spectra of the selected sources are similar to those of Seyfert 2 galaxies. This peculiarity strongly suggests that these AGN are viewed with an inclination comparable with the torus opening angle. The properties of the relativistically broadened Fe K alpha line emitted in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are still debated among the AGN community. Recent works seem to exclude that the broad Fe line is a common feature of AGN. The analysis of a large sample composed by 157 XMM-Newton archival observations of radio quiet AGN is presented here. The presence of dust at high redshift requires efficient condensation of grains in SN ejecta, in accordance with current theoretical models. Yet, observations of the few well studied SNe and SN remnants imply condensation efficiencies which are about two orders of magnitude smaller. Motivated by this tension, we have (i) revisited the model of Todini & Ferrara (2001) for dust formation in the ejecta of core collapse SNe and (ii) followed, for the first time, the evolution of newly condensed grains from the time of formation to their survival - through the passage of the reverse shock - in the SN remnant. We find that 0.1 - 0.6 M_sun of dust form in the ejecta of 12 - 40 M_sun stellar progenitors. Depending on the density of the surrounding ISM, between 2-20% of the initial dust mass survives the passage of the reverse shock, on time-scales of about 4-8 x 10^4 yr from the stellar explosion. Sputtering by the hot gas induces a shift of the dust size distribution towards smaller grains. The resulting dust extinction curve shows a good agreement with that derived by observations of a reddened QSO at z =6.2. Stochastic heating of small grains leads to a wide distribution of dust temperatures. This supports the idea that large amounts (~ 0.1 M_sun) of cold dust (T ~ 40K) can be present in SN remnants, without being in conflict with the observed IR emission., Comment: MNRAS accepted

We present results from two XMM-Newton observations of the bright classical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7582 taken four years apart (2001 May and 2005 April). We present the analysis of the high-resolution (0.3-1 keV) RGS and low-resolution (0.3-10 keV) EPIC spectroscopic data. A comparison with a 1998 BeppoSAX observation suggests that XMM-Newton caught the source in a `reflection-dominated' phase, measuring the lowest continuum flux level ever (F(2-10 keV) = 2.3 x 10^(-12) erg cm^-2 s^-1) in 2005. NGC 7582 therefore experienced a dramatic spectral transition most likely due to the partial switching-off of the nuclear activity. The XMM-Newton spectrum of the continuum emission is very complex. It can be well described by a model consisting of a combination of a heavily absorbed (Nh ~ 10^(24) cm^-2) power law and a pure reflection component both obscured by a column density of ~ 4 x 10^(22) cm^-2. Notably, we detect a significant increase by a factor of ~2 in the column density of the inner, thicker absorber covering the primary X-ray source between 2001 and 2005. The 2005 XMM-Newton spectra show the strongest Fe Kalpha emission line ever measured in this source. This is consistent with the line delayed time response to the decrease of the nuclear activity. Our analysis also reveals that the soft X-ray spectrum is dominated by emission lines from highly ionized metals. The detection of a narrow OVIII radiative recombination continuum suggests an origin in a photoionized plasma., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

This paper reports on a partially simultaneous observation of the bright Seyfert 1 Galaxy Mrk590, performed by XMM-Newton and Chandra. The long exposure (~100 ks) allows to investigate with great detail the Fe K complex at 6-7 keV and the presence of soft X-ray spectral features. We have analysed XMM-Newton data from the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) in the 0.5-12 keV band and from the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) in the 0.35-2.5 keV band, and data from the High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETGs) onboard Chandra. UV and optical data from the Optical Monitor (OM) onboard XMM-Newton are also included in the analysis. The broad band spectrum is well described by an unabsorbed power law and three unresolved Fe~K lines in the 6-7 keV range. The presence of a Compton reflection component and a narrow Fe K line at 6.4 keV is consistent with an origin via torus reflection. The ionised Fe lines at ~6.7 and 7 keV are instead most likely originated by scattering on a warm and ionised gas. The soft X-ray spectrum appears to be almost featureless due to the very bright continuum emission, except for one emission line identified as OVIII Ly alpha detected at ~19 Angstrom by both RGS and Chandra-MEG. The emerging picture consists of an active nucleus seen directly on a "clean" line of sight without intervening material, surrounded by photoionised circumnuclear gas at a high ionisation level. We also study three serendipitous sources in the field of view of Chandra and XMM-Newton. One of these sources may be identified with an ULX of L_{0.3-10 keV}~10^{40} ergs/s., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication on A&A including referee's comments

The detection of X-ray narrow spectral features in the 5-7 keV band is becoming increasingly more common in AGN observations, thanks to the capabilities of current X-ray satellites. Such lines, both in emission and in absorption, are mostly interpreted as arising from Iron atoms. When observed with some displacement from their rest frame position, these lines carry the potential to study the motion of circumnuclear gas in AGN, providing a diagnostic of the effects of the gravitational field of the central black hole. These narrow features have been often found with marginal statistical significance. We are carrying on a systematic search for narrow features using spectra of bright type 1 AGNs available in the XMM-Newton archive. The aim of this work is to characterise the occurrence of the narrow features phenomenon on a large sample of objects and to estimate the significance of the features through Monte Carlo simulations. We present preliminary results on the properties of relativistically broadened Fe K-alpha lines in a collection of more then 100 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) observed by the XMM-Newton EPIC-pn camera. Our main conclusions can be summarized as follows: a) we detect broad lines in about 25% of the sample objects. This fraction increases to 42+/-13% if we consider only objects with more than 10000 counts in the hard (2-10 keV) band, and to 50+/-32% for the small sub-sample (6 objects) of type~1 Piccinotti AGN with optimal XMM-Newton exposure (at least 200000 counts in the hard band); b) we find no significant difference in the detection rate of broad lines between obscured and unobscured AGN; c) the strongest relativistic profiles are measured in low-luminosity (< 10^43 erg/s) AGN; d) Equivalent Widths (EWs) associated with relativistic profiles in stacked spectra are ~150 eV for all luminosity classes; e) models of relativistically broadened iron line profiles ("kyrline", Dovciak et al. 2005), which include full relativistic treatment of the accretion disk emission around a Kerr black hole in the strong gravity regime, yield an average disk inclination angle ~30 degrees, and a radial dependence of the disk emissivity profile ~-3. The distribution of EW is very broad, with =2.4. We study the three-dimensional distribution of non virialised matter at z~2 using high resolution spectra of QSO pairs and simulated spectra drawn from cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We have collected the largest sample of QSO pairs ever observed with UVES at the ESO-VLT, with angular separations between ~1 and 14 arcmin. The observed correlation functions of the transmitted flux in the HI Lyman alpha forest along and transverse to the lines of sight are in good agreement implying that the distortions in redshift space due to peculiar velocities are small. The clustering signal is significant up to velocity separations of ~200 km/s, or about 3 h^{-1} comoving Mpc. The regions at lower overdensity (rho/ < 6.5) are still clustered but on smaller scales (Delta v < 100 km/s). The observed and simulated correlation functions are compatible at the 3 sigma level. A better concordance is obtained when only the low overdensity regions are selected for the analysis or when the effective optical depth of the simulated spectra is increased artificially, suggesting a deficiency of strong lines in the simulated spectra. We found that also a lower value of the power-law index of the temperature-density relation for the Lyman alpha forest gas improves the agreement between observed and simulated results. If confirmed, this would be consistent with other observations favouring a late HeII reionization epoch (at z~3). We remark the detection of a significant clustering signal in the cross correlation coefficient at a transverse velocity separation Delta v_{\perp} ~500 km/s whose origin needs further investigation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, revised version matching the accepted one

We present analysis of the optical and X-ray spectra of the low Galactic latitude bright (F(2-10) = 3.6 10^{-11} erg/cm2/s) source 4U 1344-60. On the basis of the optical data we propose to classify 4U 1344-60 as an intermediate type Seyfert galaxy and we measure a value of z=0.012+/-0.001 for its redshift. From the XMM-Newton observation we find that the overall X-ray spectral shape of 4U 1344-60 is complex and can be described by a power-law continuum (Gamma ~ 1.55) obscured by two neutral absorption components (Nh(f) ~ 10^{22} cm^{-2} and Nh(p) ~ 4 10^{22} cm^{-2}), the latter covering only the ~50% of the primary X-ray source. The X-ray data therefore lend support to our classification of 4U 1344-60. It exhibits a broad and skewed Fe Kalpha line at 6.4 keV, which suggests the existence of an accretion disk that is able to reprocess the primary continuum down to a few gravitational radii. Such a line represents one of the clearest examples of a relativistic line observed by XMM-Newton so far. Our analysis has also revealed the marginal presence of two narrow line-like emission features at ~4.9 and ~5.2 keV., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We summarize some recent results on the metallicity and dust properties of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at high redshift (110). The properties of dust in high-z QSOs are discussed within the context of the dust production mechanisms in the early universe. The dust extinction curve is observed to evolve beyond z>4, and by z~6 it is well described by the properties expected for dust produced by SNe, suggesting that the latter is the main mechanism of dust production in the early universe. We also show that the huge dust masses observed in distant QSOs can be accounted for by SN dust within the observational constraints currently available. We report on the XMM-Newton observation of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy, MCG+8-11-11. Data from the EPIC/p-n camera, the Reflection Gratings Spectrometers (RGS) and the Optical Monitor (OM) have been analyzed. The p-n spectrum is well fitted by a power law, a spectrally unresolved Fe Kalpha line, a Compton reflection component (whose large value, when compared to the iron line equivalent width, suggests iron underabundance), and absorption by warm material. Absorption lines are apparent in the RGS spectra, but their identification is uncertain and would require large matter velocities. The UV fluxes measured by the OM are well above the extrapolation of the X-ray spectrum, indicating the presence of a UV bump., Comment: 7 pages. Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the discovery of four absorption lines in the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 1365, at energies between 6.7 and 8.3 keV. The lines are detected with high statistical confidence (from >20sigma for the strongest to \~4sigma for the weakest) in two XMM-Newton observations 60 ksec long. We also detect the same lines, with lower signal-to-noise (but still >2sigma for each line) in two previous shorter (~10 ksec) XMM observations. The spectral analysis identifies these features as FeXXV and FeXXVI Kalpha and Kbeta lines, outflowing with velocities varying between ~1000 to ~5000 km/s among the observations. These are the highest quality detections of such lines so far. The high equivalent widths (EW(Kalpha)~100 eV) and the Kalpha/Kbeta ratios imply that the lines are due to absorption of the AGN continuum by a highly ionized gas with column density N_H~5x10^23 cm^{-2}, Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. We observed with XMM-Newton 4 objects selected from the Grossan catalog, with the aim to search for new 'changing-look' AGN. The sample includes all the sources which showed in subsequent observations a flux much lower than the one measured with HEAO A-1: NGC 7674, NGC 4968, IRAS 13218+0552 and NGC 1667. None of the sources was caught in a high flux state during the XMM-Newton observations, whose analysis reveal they are all likely Compton-thick objects. We suggest that, for all the sources, potential problems with the HEAO A-1 source identification and flux measurement prevent us from being certain that the HEAO A-1 data represent a putative 'high' state for these objects. Nonetheless, based on the high flux state and Compton-thin spectrum of its GINGA observation, NGC 7674 represents probably the sixth known case of a 'changing-look' Seyfert 2 galaxy. From the X-ray variability pattern, we can estimate a likely lower limit of a few parsec to the distance of the inner walls of the torus in this object. Remarkably, IRAS 13218+0552 was not detected by XMM-Newton, despite being currently classified as a Seyfert 1 with a large [OIII] flux. However, the original classification was likely to be affected by an extreme velocity outflow component in the emission lines. The object likely harbors an highly obscured AGN and should be re-classified as a Type 2 source., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We investigate the 3-D matter distribution at z~2 with high resolution (R ~ 40000) spectra of QSO pairs and groups obtained with the UVES spectrograph at ESO VLT. Our sample is unique for the number density of objects and the variety of separations, between 0.5 and 7 proper Mpc. We compute the real space cross-correlation function of the Lyman-alpha forest transmitted fluxes. Q0056-363 is the most powerful X-ray quasar known to exhibit a broad, likely relativistic iron line (Porquet & Reeves 2003). It has been observed twice by XMM-$Newton$, three and half years apart (July 2000 and December 2003). In the second observation, the UV and soft X-ray fluxes were fainter, the hard X-ray power law flatter, and the iron line equivalent width (EW) smaller than in the 2000 observation. These variations can all be explained, at least qualitatively, if the disc is truncated in the second observation. We report also on the possible detection of a transient, redshifted iron absorption line during the 2003 observation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Interstellar dust plays a crucial role in the evolution of the Universe by assisting the formation of molecules, by triggering the formation of the first low-mass stars, and by absorbing stellar ultraviolet-optical light and subsequently re-emitting it at infrared/millimetre wavelengths. Dust is thought to be produced predominantly in the envelopes of evolved (age >1 Gyr), low-mass stars. This picture has, however, recently been brought into question by the discovery of large masses of dust in the host galaxies of quasars at redshift z>6, when the age of the Universe was less than 1 Gyr. Theoretical studies, corroborated by observations of nearby supernova remnants, have suggested that supernovae provide a fast and efficient dust formation environment in the early Universe. Here we report infrared observations of a quasar at redshift 6.2, which are used to obtain directly its dust extinction curve. We then show that such a curve is in excellent agreement with supernova dust models. This result demonstrates a supernova origin for dust in this high-redshift quasar, from which we infer that most of the dust at high redshifts has probably the same origin., Comment: To Appear in Nature, September 30, 2004

We selected a sample of eight bright unobscured (at least at the iron line energy) Seyfert Galaxies observed simultaneously by XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX, taking advantage of the complementary characteristics of the two missions. The main results of our analysis can be summarized as follows: narrow neutral iron lines are confirmed to be an ubiquitous component in Seyfert spectra; none of the analyzed sources shows unambiguously a broad relativistic iron line; all the sources of our sample (with a single exception) show the presence of a Compton reflection component; emission lines from ionized iron are observed in some sources; peculiar weak features around 5-6 keV (possibly arising from rotating spots on the accretion disk) are detected in two sources. The scenario emerging from these results strongly requires some corrections for the classical model of reprocessing from the accretion disk. As for materials farther away from the Black Hole, our results represent a positive test for the Unification Model, suggesting the presence of the torus in (almost) all sources, even if unobscured., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Narrow spectral features in the 5--6 keV range were recently discovered in the X-ray spectra of a few active galactic nuclei. We discuss the possibility that these features are due to localized spots which occur on the surface of an accretion disc following its illumination by flares. We present detailed line profiles as a function of orbital phase of the spot and its radial distance from a central black hole. Comparison of these computed profiles with observed features can help to estimate parameters of the system. In principle this method can provide a powerful tool to measure the mass of super-massive black holes in active galactic nuclei. By comparing our simulations with the Chandra and XMM-Newton results, we show, however, that spectra from present generation X-ray satellites are not of good enough quality to fully exploit the method and determine the black hole mass with sufficient accuracy. This task has to be deferred to future missions with high throughput and high energy resolution, such as Constellation-X and Xeus., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from the spectral analysis of the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-5-23-16, based on ASCA, BeppoSAX, Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. The spectrum of this object shows a complex iron Kalpha emission line, which is best modeled by a superposition of a narrow and a broad (possibly relativistic) iron line, together with a Compton reflection component. Comparing results from all (six) available observations, we do not find any significant variation in the flux of both line components. The moderate flux continuum variability (about 25% difference between the brightest and faintest states), however, does not permit us to infer much about the location of the line-emitting material. The amount of Compton reflection is lower than expected from the total iron line EW, implying either an iron overabundance or that one of the two line components (most likely the narrow one) originates in Compton-thin matter., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

A fraction of active galactic nuclei do not show the classical Seyfert-type signatures in their optical spectra, i.e. they are optically "elusive". X-ray observations are an optimal tool to identify this class of objects. We combine new Chandra observations with archival X-ray data in order to obtain a first estimate of the fraction of elusive AGN in local galaxies and to constrain their nature. Our results suggest that elusive AGN have a local density comparable to or even higher than optically classified Seyfert nuclei. Most elusive AGN are heavily absorbed in the X-rays, with gas column densities exceeding 10^24 cm^-2, suggesting that their peculiar nature is associated with obscuration. It is likely that in elusive AGN, the nuclear UV source is completely embedded and the ionizing photons cannot escape, which prevents the formation of a classical Narrow Line Region. The analysis of a simultaneous XMM-Newton/BeppoSAX plus three previous BeppoSAX observations revealed that NGC 7213 is a rather peculiar Seyfert 1. No significant Compton reflection component was observed, while an iron line complex, best explained in terms of three narrow lines, is clearly apparent in the data. Due to the absence of the reflection component, the neutral iron line is likely not produced in a Compton-thick material, but current data do not allow to choose between a Compton-thin torus and the BLR. The two ionized iron lines from \ion{Fe}{xxv} and \ion{Fe}{xxvi} may be produced in a photoionized gas with a column density of a few 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, in analogy with the case of NGC 5506., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We present and discuss Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy and Compton-thick absorbed source, Tololo~0109-383. The hard X-ray emission (i.e. above $\sim$2 keV), is dominated by a spatially unresolved reflection component, as already discovered by previous ASCA and BeppoSAX observ ations. The soft X-ray emission is partly ($\sim$15%) extended over about 1 kpc. Below 2 keV, the spectrum is very steep and two emission lines, probably due to recombination to He-like ions of oxygen and neon, are clearly present. We present a detailed discussion of the spectral and spatial components of NGC 5506, based on XMM-Newton, Chandra and BeppoSAX observations. The overall picture consists of a nucleus absorbed by cold gas with column density of $\approx10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and surrounded by a Compton-thick torus, whose existence is inferred by a cold reflection component and an iron K$\alpha$ line. On a much larger scale, a photoionized gas extended on $\approx350$ pc reprocesses the nuclear radiation, producing a soft excess and ionized iron lines. We have observed the dark cloud Barnard 68 with SCUBA at 850 um and with SIMBA at 1.2 mm. The submillimetre and millimetre dust emission correlate well with the extinction map of Alves, Lada and Lada (2001).The A_V/850um correlation is clearly not linear and suggests lower temperatures for the dust in the inner core of the cloud. Assuming a model for the temperature gradient, we derive the cloud-averaged dust emissivities (normalised to the V-Band extinction efficiency) at 850 um and 1.2 mm. We find k_850um/k_V = 4.0 +/- 1.0 x 10^-5 and k_1.2mm/k_V = 9.0 +/- 3.0 x 10^-6. We report on a dramatic flux (50 % increase in the LECS and MECS band) and spectral variation between two BeppoSAX observations of the Circinus Galaxy performed almost three years apart. Through the analysis of all Chandra observations available in the archive, including a new DDT observation on May 2001, we show that a high flux state of an extremely variable Ultra Luminous X-ray source (CG X-1: Bauer et al. 2001}, which is within the adopted BeppoSAX source extraction region of 2", is the most likely explanation for most of the observed variation. However, the presence of a high flux 6.7 keV line and the spectral variation of the PDS in the new BeppoSAX data could be partly due to intrinsic variation of the nucleus. Comparing the longest Chandra observation and the BeppoSAX one, we find that the long-term flux variability of CG X-1 is not accompanied by a significant spectral variability. We also re-analysed the Chandra HEG nuclear spectra and report on the presence of a Compton shoulder with a flux of about 20% the line core, in agreement with theoretical expectations for Compton-thick matter., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication on A&A

We have analysed SCUBA 850\mum images of the (near) face-on spiral galaxy NGC 6946, and found a tight correlation between dust thermal emission and molecular gas. The map of visual optical depth relates well to the distribution of neutral gas (HI+H2) and implies a global gas-to-dust ratio of 90. There is no significant radial variation of this ratio: this can be understood, since the gas content is dominated by far by the molecular gas. The latter is estimated through the CO emission tracer, which is itself dependent on metallicity, similarly to dust emission. By comparing the radial profile of our visual optical depth map with that of the SCUBA image, we infer an emissivity (dust absorption coefficient) at 850\mum that is 3 times lower than the value measured by COBE in the Milky Way, and 9 times lower than in NGC 891. A decomposition of the spiral structure half way out along the disk of NGC 6946 suggests an interarm optical depth of between 1 and 2. These surprisingly high values represent 40-80% of the visual opacity that we measure for the arm region (abridged)., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted in A&A

We have used a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code to produce edge-on images of dusty galactic disks, allowing a fraction of the dust to be distributed in clumps. Synthetic images of edge-on galaxies have been constructed for different amounts of dust, distributions of clumps and fractions of dust in clumps, following the formalism of Bianchi et al. (1999). We have also considered models with stellar emission embedded in the clumps. The synthetic images have been fitted with analytical models made with smooth distributions of dust, adopting the procedure developed by Xilouris et al. (1999) to fit optical images of real edge-on galaxies. We have compared the parameters determined by the fit with the input parameters of the models. For the clumping distributions adopted in this paper, the neglect of clumping results in underestimating the amount of dust in a galaxy. We present the first X-ray detection of resonant absorption from warm/hot local gas either in our Galaxy, or in the Intergalactic space surrounding our Galaxy, along the line of sight toward the blazar PKS 2155-304. The Chandra HRCS-LETG spectrum of this z=0.116 source clearly shows unresolved OVII(Ka) and NeIX(Ka) resonant absorption lines at 21.603 A and 13.448 A (i.e. cz = [-340--200] km/s in the rest frame, from the OVII line). OVIII(Ka) and OVII(Kb) from the same system are also detected at a lower significance level, while upper limits are set on OVIII(Kb), NeX(Ka) and NeIX(Kb). The FUSE spectrum of this source shows complex OVI(2s-->2p) absorption at the same redshift as the X-ray system, made by at least two components: one relatively narrow and slightly redshifted, and one broader and blueshifted (cz = -135 km/s). We demonstrate that the physical states of the UV and X-ray absorbers are hard to reconcile with a single, purely collisionally ionized, equilibrium plasma. We propose, instead, that the X-ray and, at least the broader and blueshifted UV absorber are produced in a low density intergalactic plasma (partly photoionized by the diffuse extragalactic X-ray background), collapsing towards our Galaxy, consistent with the predictions of a Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) from numerical simulations. We find that any reasonable solution requires overabundance of Ne compared to O by a factor of ~2, with respect to the solar value and propose several scenarios to account for this observation., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, re-submited to ApJ after minor referee's comments

The remarkable efficiency of the UVES spectrograph at the VLT has made it possible to push high-resolution, high-S/N ground observations of the Ly-a forest down to z~1.5, gaining new insight into the physical conditions of the intergalactic medium and its evolution over more than 90% of the cosmic time. The universal expansion, the UV ionizing background and the gravitational condensation of structures are the driving factors shaping the number density and the column density distribution of the absorbers. A (limited) contribution of UV photons produced by galaxies is found to be important to reproduce the observed evolutionary pattern at very high and low redshift. The Lyman forest contains most of the baryons, at least at z>1.5, and acts as a reservoir for galaxy formation. The typical Doppler parameter at a fixed column density is measured to slightly increase with decreasing redshift, but the inferred temperature at the mean density is increasing with redshift. We have studied the effects of gas density inhomogeneities on the escape of ionising Lyman continuum (Lyc) photons from Milky Way-type galaxies via 3D numerical simulations using the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code CRASH (Ciardi et al. 2001). To this aim a comparison between a smooth Gaussian distribution (GDD) and an inhomogeneous, fractal one (FDD) has been made with realistic assumptions for the ionising stellar sources based on available data in the solar neighborhood. In both cases the escape fraction f_esc increases with ionisation rate N_gamma (although for the FDD with a flatter slope) and they become equal at N_gamma = 2*10^50 s^-1 where f_esc = 0.11. FDD allows escape fractions of the same order also at lower N_gamma, when Lyc photon escape is sharply suppressed by GDD. Values of the escape fraction as high as 0.6 can be reached (GDD) for N_gamma ~ 9*10^50 s^-1, corresponding to a star formation rate (SFR) of roughly 2 M_o yr^-1; at this ionising luminosity the FDD is less transparent (f_esc ~ 0.28). If high redshift galaxies have gas column densities similar to local ones, are characterized by such high SFRs and by a predominantly smooth (i.e.turbulence free) interstellar medium, our results suggest that they should considerably contribute to - and possibly dominate - the cosmic UV background., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, MNRAS accepted

A sample of 8 QSOs with 1.7 < z_em < 3.7 has been observed with VLT/UVES at a typical resolution 45000 and S/N~40-50. Thanks to the two-arm design of the spectrograph, a remarkable efficiency has been achieved below 400nm and above 800nm, which translates immediately in the possibility of obtaining new results, especially at z<2.5. We present a deep multicolor (UBVIJsHKs) catalog of galaxies in the HDF-S, based on observations obtained with the HST WFPC2 in 1998 and VLT-ISAAC in 1999. The photometric procedures were tuned to derive a catalog optimized for the estimation of photometric redshifts. In particular we adopted a ``conservative'' detection threshold which resulted in a list of 1611 objects. The behavior of the observed source counts is in general agreement with the result of Casertano et al. (2000) in the HDF-S and Williams et al. (1996) in the HDF-N, while the corresponding counts in the HDF-N provided by Fernandez-Soto et al. (1999) are systematically lower by a factor 1.5 beyond I_AB=26. After correcting for the incompleteness of the source counts, the object surface density at I_AB<27.5 is estimated to be 220 per square arcmin, providing an estimate of the Extragalactic Background Light in the I band consistent with the work of Madau & Pozzetti(2000). The comparison between the median V-I color in the HDF-North and South shows a significant difference around I_AB~26, possibly due to the presence of large scale structure at z~1 in the HDF-N. High-z galaxy candidates (90 U dropout and 17 B dropout) were selected by means of color diagrams, down to a magnitude I_AB=27, with a surface density of (21+-1) and (3.9+-0.9) per square arcmin, respectively. 11 EROs (with (I-K)_AB>2.7) were selected down to K_AB=24, plus 3 objects whose upper limit to the Ks flux is still compatible with the selection criterion. The corresponding surface density of EROs is (2.5+-0.8) per sq.arcmin ((3.2+-0.9) per sq.arcmin if we include the three Ks upper limits). They show a remarkably non-uniform spatial distribution and are classified with roughly equal fractions in the categories of elliptical and starburst galaxies., Comment: 36 pages Latex, with 12 PostScript figures. We present and discuss BeppoSAX observations of Mrk841 and Mrk335, two Seyfert 1 galaxies in which previous observations have established the presence of soft excesses. We confirm the soft excess in both sources, even if for Mrk~841 a warm absorber provides a fit almost as good as the one with a true excess. As far as the hard X-ray continuum is concerned, a Comptonization model provides a fit as good as a power law and a physically sound solution for Mrk841. For Mrk335, the Comptonization model gives a result which is somewhat better on statistical ground, but rather problematic on physical ground. The most interesting results regard the reprocessing components. For Mrk841 we find a very large reflection continuum but an almost normal iron line equivalent width even if, within the errors, a solution in which both components are a factor ~2 larger than expected for an accretion disc is still marginally acceptable. If this is the case, an anisotropy of the primary emission seems the best explanation. On the contrary, in Mrk335 we find a very large iron line EW but a reflection component not accordingly large. In this case, the best solution seems to be in terms of reflection from an ionized disc., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We report the BeppoSAX detection of a hard X-ray excess in the X-ray spectrum of the classical high-ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy Tol0109-383. The X-ray emission of this source observed below 7 keV is dominated by reflection from both cold and ionized gas, as seen in the ASCA data. The excess hard X-ray emission is presumably due to the central source absorbed by an optically thick obscuring torus with N(H)~2e24 cm-2. The strong cold X-ray reflection, if it is produced at the inner surface of the torus, is consistent with the picture where much of the inner nucleus of Tol0109-383 is exposed to direct view, as indicated by optical and infrared properties. However, the X-ray absorption must occur at small radii in order to hide the central X-ray source but leave the optical high-ionization emission line region unobscured. Mkn 421 was observed by Chandra twice, on November 5, 1999 as part of the Chandra calibration program, with the ACIS-HETG configuration, and on May 29, 2000 following our Target Of Opportunity request aimed to catch the source in an ultra-high state, with both the ACIS-HETG and the HRC-LETG configurations. In this contribution we present and compare the two Chandra-MEG observations of Mkn 421, which lasted 26 and 19.6 ks respectively., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. We have used a large format CCD camera to survey the nearby Fornax cluster and its immediate environment for low luminosity low surface brightness galaxies. Recent observations indicate that these are the most dark matter dominated galaxies known and so they are likely to be a good tracer of the dark matter in clusters. We have identified large numbers of these galaxies consistent with a steep faint end slope of the luminosity function (alpha~ -2) down to MB ~ -12. These galaxies contribute almost the same amount to the total cluster light as the brighter galaxies and they have a spatial extent that is some four times larger. They satisfy two of the important predictions of N-body hierarchical simulations of structure formation using dark halos. The luminosity (mass ?) function is steep and the mass distribution is more extended than that defined by the brighter galaxies. We also find a large concentration of low surface brightness galaxies around the nearby galaxy NGC1291., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

We present simulations of Far Infrared (FIR) emission by dust in spiral galaxies, based on the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code of Bianchi, Ferrara & Giovanardi (1996). The radiative transfer is carried out at several wavelength in the Ultraviolet, optical and Near Infrared, to cover the range of the stellar Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). Together with the images of the galactic model, a map of the energy absorbed by dust is produced. Using Galactic dust properties, the spatial distribution of dust temperature is derived under the assumption of thermal equilibrium. A correction is applied for non-equilibrium emission in the Mid Infrared. Images of dust emission can then be produced at any wavelength in the FIR. We show the application of the model to the spiral galaxy NGC 6946. The observed stellar SED is used as input and models are produced for different star-dust geometries. It is found that only optically thick dust disks can reproduce the observed amount of FIR radiation. However, it is not possible to reproduce the large FIR scalelength suggested by recent observation of spirals at 200 um, even when the scalelength of the dust disk is larger than that for stars. Optically thin models have ratios of optical/FIR scalelengths closer to the 200um observations, but with smaller absolute scalelengths than optically thick cases. The modelled temperature distributions are compatible with observations of the Galaxy and other spirals. We finally discuss the approximations of the model and the impact of a clumpy stellar and dust structure on the FIR simulations., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, accepted by A&A

We compare 850um SCUBA images of NGC 891 with the corresponding V-band optical depth predicted from radiation transfer simulations. These two tracers of dust show a very similar distribution along the minor axis and a reasonable agreement along the major axis. Assuming that the grains responsible for optical extinction are also the source of 850um emission we derive a submillimeter emissivity (emission efficiency) for dust in the NGC 891 disk. This quantity is found to be a factor of 2-3 higher than the generally-accepted (but highly uncertain) values adopted for the Milky Way. It should be stated, however, that if a substantial fraction of dust in NGC 891 is clumped, the emissivity in the two galaxies may be quite similar. We use our newly-acquired emissivity to convert our 850um images into detailed maps of dust mass and, utilizing 21cm and CO-emission data for NGC 891, derive the gas-to-dust ratio along the disk. We compute an average ratio of 260 -- a value consistent with the Milky Way and external spirals within the uncertainties in deriving both the dust mass and the quantity of molecular gas. The bulk of dust in NGC 891 appears to be closely associated with the molecular gas phase although it may start to follow the distribution of atomic hydrogen at radii >9 kpc (i.e. >0.5 R_25). Using the optical depth of the NGC 891 disk, we quantify how light emitted at high redshift is attenuated by dust residing in foreground spirals. For B-band observations of galaxies typically found in the Hubble Deep Field, the amount of light lost is expected to be small (~ 5%). This value depends critically on the maximum radial extent of cold dust in spiral disks (which is poorly known). We present sub-millimetre images of the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 at 450 and 850 um. The observations have been carried out using the scan/map imaging mode of the Sub-millimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clark Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The comparison with a 12CO(2-1) line emission map from IRAM and with an U-band image, clearly shows that the 850 um emission is associated with molecular gas and bright star-forming regions, tracing the spiral arms. We present an extensive study of the radiative transfer in dusty galaxies based on Monte Carlo simulations. The main output of these simulations are the attenuation curves ${\cal A}_\lambda$ (i.e. the ratio between the observed, dust extinguished, total intensity to the intrinsic unextinguished one of the galaxy as a function of wavelength). We have explored the dependence of ${\cal A}_\lambda$ on a conspicuous set of quantities (Hubble type, inclination, dust optical thickness, dust distribution and extinction properties) for a large wavelength interval, ranging from 1250\AA to the K band, thus finally providing a comprehensive atlas of dust extinction in galaxies, which is electronically available. We present observations of the spiral galaxy NGC 7331 using the Sub-millimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clark Maxwell Telescope. We have detected a dust ring of 45 arcsec radius (3.3 kpc) at wavelengths of 450 and 850-micron. The dust ring is in good correspondence with other observations of the ring in the mid-infrared (MIR), CO and radio-continuum, suggesting that the observed dust is associated with the molecular gas and star formation. A B-K colour map shows an analogous ring structure with an asymmetry about the major axis, consistent with the extinction being produced by a dust ring. The derived temperature of the dust lies between 16 and 31 K and the gas-to-dust ratio between 150 and 570, depending on the assumed dust emission efficiency index (beta=1.5 or 2.)., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, to be published in MNRAS
