Search

The possible existence of a continuum encompassing the diversity of explosive stellar deaths,ranging from ordinary SNe to relativistic hypernovae associated with long duration GRBs, is under intense debate. In this context, SN2008D associated with XT080109 could represent a paradigmatic case, since it might exemplify a potential borderline event. The main aim is to infer geometric information of SN2008D through the evolution of its linear optical polarization. We also report the polarization evolution of SN2007uy, and discuss the properties of the host ISM towards the XT. The final goal is to compare the polarization properties, and hence the geometries of both SNe, which shone contemporaneously in NGC2770. This fortunate coincidence brought us the opportunity to observe both SNe simultaneously, and most importantly, with identical instrumental setups. The observations span 74.9 days, starting 3.6 days after the XT and are distributed in 11 visits. In addition we performed observations in the mm range in order to identify the dominant polarization. We report positive linear polarization detections at several epochs for SN2008D at a level of ~1% and at ~1.5% for SN2007uy. SN2007uy shows constant polarization, which could be described by the host interstellar polarization plus a constant eccentricity expansion on the sky plane. A statistical analysis of the distribution of the SN2008D Stokes parametres suggests that it could show an intrinsic variable polarization component. Assuming the SN2007uy polarization is constant, we find that the evolution of the intrinsic SN2008D polarization could be explained by an aspherical axisymmetric expansion with variable eccentricity. We come to the same result even if we make no assumption on SN2007uy, although at a lower significance level. Aims: We present multiwavelength observations of one of the most distant gamma-ray bursts detected so far, GRB 080913. Based on these observations, we consider whether it could be classified as a short-duration GRB and discuss the implications for the progenitor nature and energy extraction mechanisms. Methods: Multiwavelength X-ray, near IR and millimetre observations were made between 20.7 hours and 16.8 days after the event. Results: Whereas a very faint afterglow was seen at the 3.5m CAHA telescope in the nIR, the X-ray afterglow was clearly detected in both Swift and XMM-Newton observations. An upper limit is reported in the mm range. We have modeled the data assuming a collimated $\theta_0$ $\gtrsim$ 3$^\circ$ blast wave with an energy injection at 0.5 days carrying $5\sim 10^{52}$ erg or approximately 12 times the initial energy of the blast wave. We find that GRB 080913 shares many of the gamma-ray diagnostics with the more recent burst GRB 090423 for being classified as short had they ocurred at low redshift. If the progenitor were a compact binary merger, it is likely composed by a NS and BH. The Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism is the preferred one to extract energy from the central, maximally-rotating BH. Both the magnetic field close to the event horizon (B) and the BH mass ($M_{bh}$) are restricted within a relatively narrow range, such that $(B / 3\times 10^{16} \rm{G}) (M_{bh} / 7 M_\odot) \sim 1$. Similar constraints on the central BH hold for collapsar-like progenitor systems if the BZ-mechanism works for the system at hand., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

Soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) are a rare type of gamma-ray transient sources that are ocasionally detected as bursts in the high-energy sky. They are thought to be produced by magnetars, young neutron stars with very strong magnetic fields of the order of 10^(14-15) G. Only three such objects are known in our Galaxy, and a fourth one is associated with the supernova remnant N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. In none of these cases has an optical counterpart to either the gamma-ray flares or the quiescent source been identified. Here we present multi-wavelength observations of a puzzling source, SWIFT J195509+261406, for which we detected more than 40 flaring episodes in the optical band over a time span of 3 days, plus a faint infrared flare 11 days later, after which it returned to quiescence. We propose that SWIFT J195509+261406 is a member of a subgroup of SGRs for which the long-term X-ray emission is transient in nature. Furthermore, it is the first SGR for which bursts have been detected in the optical and near-infrared bands and maybe the link between the "persistent" SGRs and the dim isolated neutron stars., Comment: Version submitted to Nature on 31 Jan 2008. Aims: The AGILE gamma-ray burst GRB 080514B is the first burst with detected emission above 30 MeV and an optical afterglow. However, no spectroscopic redshift for this burst is known. Methods: We compiled ground-based photometric optical/NIR and millimeter data from several observatories, including the multi-channel imager GROND, as well as ultraviolet \swift UVOT and X-ray XRT observations. The spectral energy distribution of the optical/NIR afterglow shows a sharp drop in the \swift UVOT UV filters that can be utilized for the estimation of a redshift. Results: Fitting the SED from the \swift UVOT $uvw2$ band to the $H$ band, we estimate a photometric redshift of $z=1.8^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$, consistent with the pseudo redshift reported by Pelangeon & Atteia (2008) based on the gamma-ray data. Conclusions: The afterglow properties of GRB 080514B do not differ from those exhibited by the global sample of long bursts, supporting the view that afterglow properties are basically independent of prompt emission properties., Comment: submitted to A&A letters

We present a detailed study of the prompt and afterglow emission from Swift GRB 061126 using BAT, XRT, UVOT data and multi-color optical imaging from ten ground-based telescopes. GRB 061126 was a long burst (T_90=191 s) with four overlapping peaks in its gamma-ray light curve. The X-ray afterglow, observed from 26 min to 20 days after the burst, shows a simple power-law decay with alpha_X=1.290 \pm 0.008. Optical observations presented here cover the time range from 258 s (Faulkes Telescope North) to 15 days (Gemini North) after the burst; the decay rate of the optical afterglow shows a steep-to-shallow transition (from alpha_1=1.48 \pm 0.06 to alpha_2=0.88 \pm 0.03) approximately 13 min after the burst. We suggest the early, steep component is due to a reverse shock and show that the magnetic energy density in the ejecta, expressed as a fraction of the equipartion value, is a few ten times larger than in the forward shock in the early afterglow phase. The ejecta might be endowed with primordial magnetic fields at the central engine. The optical light curve implies a late-time break at about 1.5 days after the burst, while there is no evidence of the simultaneous break in the X-ray light curve. We model the broad band emission and show that some afterglow characteristics (the steeper decay in X-ray and the shallow spectral index from optical to X-ray) are difficult to explain in the framework of the standard fireball model. This might imply that the X-ray afterglow is due to an additional emission process, such as late time central engine activity rather than blast-wave shock emission. We report on the highly extinguished afterglow of GRB 070306 and the properties of the host galaxy. An optical afterglow was not detected at the location of the burst, but in near-infrared a doubling in brightness during the first night and later power-law decay in the K band provided a clear detection of the afterglow. The host galaxy is relatively bright, R ~ 22.8. An optical low resolution spectrum revealed a largely featureless host galaxy continuum with a single emission line. Higher resolution follow-up spectroscopy shows this emission to be resolved and consisting of two peaks separated by 7 AA, suggesting it to be [O II] at a redshift of z = 1.49594 +- 0.00006. The infrared color H-K = 2 directly reveals significant reddening. By modeling the optical/X-ray spectral energy distribution at t = 1.38 days with an extinguished synchrotron spectrum, we derive A_V = 5.5 +- 0.6 mag. This is among the largest values ever measured for a GRB afterglow and visual extinctions exceeding unity are rare. We have gathered optical photometry data from the literature on a large sample of Swift-era gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows including GRBs up to September 2009, for a total of 76 GRBs, and present an additional three pre-Swift GRBs not included in an earlier sample. Furthermore, we publish 840 additional new photometry data points on a total of 42 GRB afterglows, including large data sets for GRBs 050319, 050408, 050802, 050820A, 050922C, 060418, 080413A and 080810. We analyzed the light curves of all GRBs in the sample and derived spectral energy distributions for the sample with the best data quality, allowing us to estimate the host galaxy extinction. We transformed the afterglow light curves into an extinction-corrected z=1 system and compared their luminosities with a sample of pre-Swift afterglows. The results of a former study, which showed that GRB afterglows clustered and exhibited a bimodal distribution in luminosity space, is weakened by the larger sample. We found that the luminosity distribution of the two afterglow samples (Swift-era and pre-Swift) are very similar, and that a subsample for which we were not able to estimate the extinction, which is fainter than the main sample, can be explained by assuming a moderate amount of line-of-sight host extinction. We derived bolometric isotropic energies for all GRBs in our sample, and found only a tentative correlation between the prompt energy release and the optical afterglow luminosity at one day after the GRB in the z=1 system. A comparative study of the optical luminosities of GRB afterglows with echelle spectra (which show a high number of foreground absorbing systems) and those without reveals no indication that the former are statistically significantly more luminous. We present multiwavelength (X-ray/optical/near-infrared/millimetre) observations of GRB 051022 between 2.5 hours and ~1.15 yr after the event. It is the most intense gamma-ray burst (~ 10^-4 erg cm^-2) detected by HETE-2, with the exception of the nearby GRB 030329. Optical and near infrared observations did not detect the afterglow despite a strong afterglow at X-ray wavelengths. Millimetre observations at Plateau de Bure (PdB) detected a source and a flare, confirming the association of this event with a moderately bright (R = 21.5) galaxy. Spectroscopic observations of this galaxy show strong [O II], Hbeta and [O III] emission lines at a redshift of 0.809. The spectral energy distribution of the galaxy implies Av (rest frame) = 1.0 and a starburst occuring ~ 25 Myr ago, during which the star-forming-rate reached >= 25 Msun/yr. In conjunction with the spatial extent (~ 1'') it suggests a very luminous (Mv = - 21.8) blue compact galaxy, for which we also find with Z Zsun. The X-ray spectrum shows evidence of considerable absorption by neutral gas with NH, X-ray = 3.47(+0.48/-0.47) x 10^22 cm^-2 (rest frame). Absorption by dust in the host galaxy at z = 0.809 certainly cannot account for the non-detection of the optical afterglow, unless the dust-to-gas ratio is quite different than that seen in our Galaxy (i.e. large dust grains). It is likely that the afterglow of the dark GRB 051022 was extinguished along the line of sight by an obscured, dense star forming region in a molecular cloud within the parent host galaxy. This galaxy is different from most GRB hosts being brighter than L* by a factor of 3. GAW, acronym for Gamma Air Watch, is a Research and Development experiment in the TeV range, whose main goal is to explore the feasibility of large field of view Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. GAW is an array of three relatively small telescopes (2.13 m diameter) which differs from the existing and presently planned projects in two main features: the adoption of a refractive optics system as light collector and the use of single photoelectron counting as detector working mode. The optics system allows to achieve a large field of view (24x24 squared degrees) suitable for surveys of large sky regions. The single photoelectron counting mode in comparison with the charge integration mode improves the sensitivity by permitting also the reconstruction of events with a small number of collected Cherenkov photons. GAW, which is a collaboration effort of Research Institutes in Italy, Portugal and Spain, will be erected in the Calar Alto Observatory (Sierra de Los Filabres - Andalucia, Spain), at 2150 m a.s.l.). The first telescope will be settled within Autumn 2007. We report on follow-up observations of the GRB 060927 using the ROTSE-IIIa telescope and a suite of larger aperture ground-based telescopes. An optical afterglow was detected 20 s after the burst, the earliest rest-frame detection of optical emission from any GRB. Spectroscopy performed with the VLT about 13 hours after the trigger shows a continuum break at lambda ~ 8070 A produced by neutral hydrogen absorption at z~5.6. We also detect an absorption line at 8158 A which we interpret as SiII at z=5.467. Hence, GRB 060927 is the second most distant GRB with a spectroscopically measured redshift. The shape of the red wing of the spectral break can be fitted by a damped Lyalpha profile with a column density with log(N_HI/cm^-2) ~ 22.5. We discuss the implications of this work for the use of GRBs as probes of the end of the dark ages and draw three main conclusions: i) GRB afterglows originating from z>6 should be relatively easy to detect from the ground, but rapid NIR monitoring is necessary to ensure that they are found; ii) The presence of large HI column densities in some GRBs host galaxies at z>5 makes the use of GRBs to probe the reionization epoch via spectroscopy of the red damping wing challenging; iii) GRBs appear crucial to locate typical star-forming galaxies at z>5 and therefore the type of galaxies responsible for the reionization of the universe., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ, uses emulateapj

We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the afterglow and host galaxy of gamma-ray burst 040924. This GRB had a rather short duration of T90 ~2.4s, and a well sampled optical afterglow light curve. We aim to use this dataset to find further evidence that this burst is consistent with a massive star core-collapse progenitor. We combine the afterglow data reported here with data taken from the literature and compare the host properties with survey data. We find that the global behaviour of the optical afterglow is well fit by a broken power-law, with a break at ~0.03 days. We determine the redshift z = 0.858 +/- 0.001 from the detected emission lines in our spectrum. Using the spectrum and photometry we derive global properties of the host, showing it to have similar properties to long GRB hosts. We detect the [Ne III] emission line in the spectrum, and compare the fluxes of this line of a sample of 15 long GRB host galaxies with survey data, showing the long GRB hosts to be comparable to local metal-poor emission line galaxies in their [Ne III] emission. We fit the supernova bump accompanying this burst, and find that it is similar to other long GRB supernova bumps, but fainter. All properties of GRB 040924 are consistent with an origin in the core-collapse of a massive star: the supernova, the spectrum and SED of the host and the afterglow., Comment: A&A submitted. 10 pages, 4 figures

Gamma-ray burst afterglow observations in the Swift era have a perceived lack of achromatic jet breaks compared to the BeppoSAX era. We present our multi-wavelength analysis of GRB 060206 as an illustrative example of how inferences of jet breaks from optical and X-ray data might differ. The results of temporal and spectral analyses are compared, and attempts are made to fit the data within the context of the standard blast wave model. We find that while the break appears more pronounced in the optical and evidence for it from the X-ray alone is weak, the data are actually consistent with an achromatic break at about 16 hours. This break and the light curves fit standard blast wave models, either as a jet break or as an injection break. As the pre-Swift sample of afterglows are dominated by optical observations, and in the Swift era most well sampled light curves are in the X-ray, caution is needed when making a direct comparison between the two samples, and when making definite statements on the absence of achromatic breaks., Comment: 5 pages including 1 figure; accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters after minor revisions

We present deep optical and infrared observations of the short duration GRB 050906. Although no X-ray or optical/IR afterglow was discovered to deep limits, the error circle of the GRB (as derived from the Swift BAT) is unusual incontaining the relatively local starburst galaxy IC328. This makes GRB 050906 a candidate burst from a soft-gamma repeater, similar to the giant flare from SGR 1806-20. The probability of chance alignment of a given BAT position with such a galaxy is small (<1%), although the size of the error circle (2.6 arcminute radius) is such that a higher-z origin can't be ruled out. Indeed, the error circle also includes a moderately rich galaxy cluster at z=0.43, which is a plausible location for the burst given the apparent preference that short GRBs have for regions of high mass density. No residual optical or infrared emission has been observed, either in the form of an afterglow or later time emission from any associated supernova-like event. We present comprehensive photometric R-band observations of the fading optical afterglow of the X-Ray Flash XRF050824, from 11 minutes to 104 days after the burst. The R-band lightcurve of the afterglow resembles the lightcurves of long duration Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), i.e., a power-law albeit with a rather shallow slope of alpha=0.6. Our late R-band images reveal the host galaxy with a rest-frame B-band luminosity corresponding to roughly 0.5 Lstar. The star-formation rate as determined from the [O II] emission line luminosity is about 1.8 Msun per year. When accounting for the host contribution, the slope is alpha=0.65+-0.01 and a break in the lightcurve is also suggested. A potential lightcurve bump at 2 weeks can be interpreted as a supernova only if this is a supernova with a fast rise and a fast decay. However, the overall fit still show excess scatter in the lightcurve due to wiggles and bumps. The flat lightcurves in the optical and X-rays could be explained by a continuous energy injection scenario with an on-axis viewing angle and a wide jet opening angle (theta_j>10 deg). If the energy injections are episodic, this could potentially help explain the bumps and wiggles. Spectroscopy of the afterglow give a redshift of z=0.828+-0.005 from both absorption and emission lines. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of the afterglow has a power-law shape with slope beta=0.56+-0.04. This can be compared to the X-ray spectral index which is betaX=1.0+-0.1. The curvature of the SED constrain the dust reddening towards the burst to Av<0.5 mag. (abridged), Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present broad band optical afterglow observations of a long duration GRB 060124 using the 1.04-m Sampurnanand Telescope at ARIES, Nainital and the 2.01-m HCT at IAO, Hanle, including the earliest ground based observations in R band for this GRB. We determine the decay slope of the light curve at different bands and examine the reality of a proposed jet break. We use data from our observations as well as others reported in the literature to construct light curves in different bands and make power law fits to them. The spectral slope of the afterglow emission in the optical band is estimated. Our first R-band observations were taken $\sim 0.038$~d after burst. We find that all available optical data after this epoch are well fit by a single power law, with a temporal flux decay index $\alpha\sim 0.94$. We do not find any evidence of a jet break within our data, which extend till $\sim 2$~d after the burst. The X-ray light curve, however, shows a distinct break around 0.6 day. We attribute this break to a steepening of the electron energy spectrum at high energies. We conclude that the above measurements are consistent with the picture of a standard fireball evolution with no jet break within $t\sim 2$~days after the burst. This sets a lower limit of $3\times 10^{50}$~erg to the total energy released in the explosion., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Aims. Understand the shape and implications of the multiband light curve of GRB 050408, an X-ray rich (XRR) burst. Methods. We present a multiband optical light curve, covering the time from the onset of the gamma-ray event to several months after, when we only detect the host galaxy. Together with X-ray, millimetre and radio observations we compile what, to our knowledge, is the most complete multiband coverage of an XRR burst afterglow to date. Results. The optical and X-ray light curve is characterised by an early flattening and an intense bump peaking around 6 days after the burst onset. We explain the former by an off-axis viewed jet, in agreement with the predictions made for XRR by some models, and the latter with an energy injection equivalent in intensity to the initial shock. The analysis of the spectral flux distribution reveals an extinction compatible with a low chemical enrichment surrounding the burst. We report early follow-up observations of the error box of the short burst 050813 using the telescopes at Calar Alto and at Observatorio Sierra Nevada (OSN), followed by deep VLT/FORS2 I-band observations obtained under very good seeing conditions 5.7 and 11.7 days after the event. Neither a fading afterglow, nor a rising SN component was found, so the potential GRB host galaxy has not been identified based on a comparison of the two VLT images taken at different epoches. We discuss if any of the galaxies present in the original 10 arcsec XRT error circle could be the host. In any case, the optical afterglow of GRB 050813 was of very low luminosity. We conclude that all these properties are consistent with the binary compact merger hypothesis for the progenitor of GRB 050813., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. In this work, we present a multi-wavelength study of XRF 040912, aimed at measuring its distance scale and the intrinsic burst properties. We performed a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of both the prompt and the afterglow emission and we estimated the distance scale of the likely host galaxy. We then used the currently available sample of XRFs with known distance to discuss the connection between XRFs and classical Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). We found that the prompt emission properties unambiguously identify this burst as an XRF, with an observed peak energy of E_p=17+/-13 keV and a burst fluence ratio S(2-30keV)/S(30-400keV)>1. A non-fading optical source with R~24 mag and with an apparently extended morphology is spatially consistent with the X-ray afterglow, likely the host galaxy. XRF 040912 is a very dark burst since no afterglow optical counterpart is detected down to R>25 mag (3 sigma limiting magnitude) at 13.6 hours after the burst. The host galaxy spectrum detected from 3800A to 10000A, shows a single emission line at 9552A. The lack of any other strong emission lines blue-ward of the detected one and the absence of the Ly alpha cut-off down to 3800A are consistent with the hypothesis of the [OII] line at redshift z=1.563+/-0.001. The intrinsic spectral properties rank this XRF among the soft GRBs in the E_peak-E_iso diagram. Similar results were obtained for most XRFs at known redshift. Only XRF 060218 and XRF 020903 represent a good example of instrinsic XRF(i-XRF) and are possibly associated with a different progenitor population. We have performed optical polarimetric observations of the SN2006aj associated to the X-ray flash (XRF) of February 18, 2006, XRF060218 that provide information on its expansion geometry. The data were acquired in the R-band with the 0.7m telescope of Crimea, 2.5m Nordic Optical Telescope and the 2.2m of Calar Alto. We report the detection of linear polarization between 3 and 39 days after the gamma-ray event (t-t_0). This represents the first polarization detection of a Ic supernova (SN) associated to an XRF. Our data exhibit a degree of linear polarization (P) around P~4% at t-t_0 ~ 3-5 days, followed by a constant polarization phase with P~1.4% at 13.7 < t-t_0 < 39 days. Our data suggest a decay in P, and more interestingly, show a position angle (\theta) rotation of ~100 degrees comparing data taken before and after the R-band lightcurve peak. The reported polarization measurements can be explained by the evolution of an asymmetric SN expansion. We present multiwavelength observations of the gamma-ray burst GRB 051028 detected by HETE-2 in order to derive its afterglow emission parameters and to determine the reason for its optical faintness when compared to other events. Observations were taken in the optical (2.0m Himalayan Chandra Telescope, 1.34m Tautenburg, 4.2m William Herschel Telescope) and in X-rays (Swift/XRT) between 2.7 hours and 10 days after the onset of the event. The data can be interpreted by collimated emission in a jet with a typical value of $p$ = 2.4 which is moving in an homogeneous interstellar medium and with a cooling frequency nu_{c} still above the X-rays at 0.5 days after the burst onset. GRB 051028 can be classified as a ``gray'' or ``potentially dark'' GRB. On the basis of the combined optical and Swift/XRT data, we conclude that the reason for the optical dimness is not extra absorption in the host galaxy, but rather the GRB taking place at high-redshift.We also notice the very striking similarity with the optical lightcurve of GRB 050730, a burst with a spectroscopic redshift of 3.967, although GRB 051028 is about 3 mag fainter. We suggest that the bump could be explained by multiple energy injection episodes and that the burst is intrinsically faint when compared to the average afterglows detected since 1997. The non-detection of the host galaxy down to R = 25.1 is also consistent with the burst arising at high redshift, compatible with the published pseudo-z of 3.7 +/- 1.8., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures. GRB 050730 is a long duration high-redshift burst (z=3.967) discovered by Swift. The afterglow shows variability and is well monitored over a wide wavelength range. We present comprehensive temporal and spectral analysis of the afterglow of GRB 050730 including observations from the millimeter to X-rays. We use multi-wavelength afterglow data to understand the temporal and spectral decay properties with superimposed variability of this high redshift burst. Five telescopes were used to study the decaying afterglow of GRB 050730 in the B, V, r', R, i', I, J and K photometric pass bands. A spectral energy distribution was constructed at 2.9 hours post-burst in the K, J, I, R, V and B bands. X-ray data from the satellites Swift and XMM-Newton were used to study the afterglow evolution at higher energies. The early afterglow shows variability at early times and shows a steepening at ~0.1 days (8.6 ks) in the B, V, r', R, i', I, J and K passbands. The early afterglow light curve decayed with alpha_1 = -0.60+/-0.07 and alpha_2 = -1.71+/-0.06 based on R and I band data. A millimeter detection of the afterglow around 3 days after the burst shows an excess in comparison to predictions. The early X-ray light curve observed by Swift is complex and contains flares. At late times the X-ray light curve can be fit by a powerlaw alpha_x = -2.5+/-0.15 which is steeper than the optical light curve. A spectral energy distribution (SED) was constructed at \~2.9 hours after the burst. An electron energy index, p, of ~ 2.3 was calculated using the SED and the photon index from the X-ray afterglow spectra and indicates that the synchrotron cooling frequency nu_c is above observed frequencies., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A. We present a discovery and observation of an extraordinarily bright prompt optical emission of the GRB 060117 obtained by a wide-field camera atop the robotic telescope FRAM of the Pierre Auger Observatory from 2 to 10 minutes after the GRB. We found rapid average temporal flux decay of alpha = -1.7 +- 0.1 and a peak brightness R = 10.1 mag. Later observations by other instruments set a strong limit on the optical and radio transient fluxes, unveiling an unexpectedly rapid further decay. We present an interpretation featuring a relatively steep electron-distribution parameter p ~ 3.0 and providing a straightforward solution for the overall fast decay of this optical transient as a transition between reverse and forward shock., Comment: Accepted to A&A, 4 pages, corected few typos pointed out by X.F. Since the discovery of the first short-hard gamma-ray burst afterglows in 2005, the handful of observed events have been found to be embedded in nearby (z < 1), bright underlying galaxies. We present multiwavelength observations of the short-duration burst GRB 060121, which is the first observed to clearly outshine its host galaxy (by a factor >10^2). A photometric redshift for this event places the progenitor at a most probable redshift of z = 4.6, with a less probable scenario of z = 1.7. In either case, GRB 060121 could be the farthermost short-duration GRB detected to date and implies an isotropic-equivalent energy release in gamma-rays comparable to that seen in long-duration bursts. We discuss the implications of the released energy on the nature of the progenitor. These results suggest that GRB 060121 may belong to a family of energetic short-duration events, lying at z > 1 and whose optical afterglows would outshine their host galaxies, unlike the first short-duration GRBs observed in 2005. We report on the photometric, spectroscopic and polarimetric, monitoring of the optical afterglow of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 030328 detected by HETE-2. Photometry, collected at 7 different telescopes, shows that a smoothly broken powerlaw decay, with indices alpha_1 = 0.76 +/- 0.03, alpha_2 = 1.50 +/- 0.07 and a break at t_b = 0.48 +/- 0.03 days after the GRB, provides the best fit of the optical afterglow decline. This shape is interpreted as due to collimated emission, for which we determine a jet opening angle theta_{jet} of about 3.2 degrees. An achromatic bump starting around 0.2 d after the GRB is possibly marginally detected in the optical light curves. Optical spectroscopy shows the presence of two rest-frame ultraviolet metal absorption systems at z = 1.5216 +/- 0.0006 and at z = 1.295 +/- 0.001, the former likely associated with the GRB host galaxy. Analysis of the absorption lines at z = 1.5216 suggests that the host of this GRB may be a Damped Lyman-alpha Absorber. The optical V-band afterglow appears polarized, with P= (2.4 +/- 0.6) % and theta = (170 +/- 7) degrees, suggesting an asymmetric blastwave expansion. An X-ray-to-optical spectral flux distribution of the GRB 030328 afterglow was obtained at 0.78 days after the GRB and fitted using a broken powerlaw, with an optical spectral slope beta_{opt} = 0.47 +/- 0.15, and an X-ray slope beta_{X} = 1.0 +/- 0.2. The discussion of these results in the context of the "fireball model" shows that the preferred scenario for this afterglow is collimated structured jet with fixed opening angle in a homogeneous medium., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication on A&A, main journal. When massive stars exhaust their fuel they collapse and often produce the extraordinarily bright explosions known as core-collapse supernovae. On occasion, this stellar collapse also powers an even more brilliant relativistic explosion known as a long-duration gamma-ray burst. One would then expect that long gamma-ray bursts and core-collapse supernovae should be found in similar galactic environments. Here we show that this expectation is wrong. We find that the long gamma-ray bursts are far more concentrated on the very brightest regions of their host galaxies than are the core-collapse supernovae. Furthermore, the host galaxies of the long gamma-ray bursts are significantly fainter and more irregular than the hosts of the core-collapse supernovae. Together these results suggest that long-duration gamma-ray bursts are associated with the most massive stars and may be restricted to galaxies of limited chemical evolution. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are associated with type Ic supernovae that are more luminous than average and that eject material at very high velocities. Less-luminous supernovae were not hitherto known to be associated with GRBs, and therefore GRB-supernovae were thought to be rare events. Whether X-ray flashes - analogues of GRBs, but with lower luminosities and fewer gamma-rays - can also be associated with supernovae, and whether they are intrinsically 'weak' events or typical GRBs viewed off the axis of the burst, is unclear. Here we report the optical discovery and follow-up observations of the type Ic supernova SN 2006aj associated with X-ray flash XRF 060218. Supernova 2006aj is intrinsically less luminous than the GRB-supernovae, but more luminous than many supernovae not accompanied by a GRB. The ejecta velocities derived from our spectra are intermediate between these two groups, which is consistent with the weakness of both the GRB output and the supernova radio flux. Our data, combined with radio and X-ray observations, suggest that XRF 060218 is an intrinsically weak and soft event, rather than a classical GRB observed off-axis. This extends the GRB-supernova connection to X-ray flashes and fainter supernovae, implying a common origin. We present multicolor optical observations of the nearby (z=0.1685) GRB 030329 obtained with the same instrumentation over a time period of 6 hours for a total of an unprecedented 475 quasi-simultaneous BVR observations. The achromatic steepening in the optical, which occurs at t~0.7 days, provides evidence for a dynamic transition of the source, and can be most readily explained by models in which the GRB ejecta are collimated into a jet. Since the current state-of-the-art modeling of GRB jets is still flawed with uncertainties, we use these data to critically assess some classes of models that have been proposed in the literature. The data, especially the smooth decline rate seen in the optical afterglow, are consistent with a model in which GRB 030329 was a homogeneous, sharp-edged jet, viewed near its edge interacting with a uniform external medium, or viewed near its symmetry axis with a stratified wind-like external environment. The lack of short timescale fluctuations in the optical afterglow flux down to the 0.5 per cent level puts stringent constraints on possible small scale angular inhomogeneities within the jet or fluctuations in the external density.

We present a detailed study of the spectral and temporal properties of the X-ray and optical emission of GRB050713a up to 0.5 day after the main GRB event. The X-ray light curve exhibits large amplitude variations with several rebrightenings superposed on the underlying three-segment broken powerlaw that is often seen in Swift GRBs. Our time-resolved spectral analysis supports the interpretation of a long-lived central engine, with rebrightenings consistent with energy injection in refreshed shocks as slower shells generated in the central engine prompt phase catch up with the afterglow shock at later times. Our sparsely-sampled light curve of the optical afterglow can be fitted with a single power law without large flares. We report optical and near-infrared broad band observations of the short-duration GRB 050724 host galaxy, used to construct its spectral energy distribution (SED). Unlike the hosts of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which show younger stellar populations, the SED of the GRB 050724 host galaxy is optimally fitted with a synthetic elliptical galaxy template based on an evolved stellar population (age ~2.6 Gyr). The SED of the host is difficult to reproduce with non-evolving metallicity templates. In contrast, if the short GRB host galaxy metallicity enrichment is considered, the synthetic templates fit the observed SED satisfactorily. The internal host extinction is low (A_v \~< 0.4 mag) so it cannot explain the faintness of the afterglow. This short GRB host galaxy is more massive (~5x10^10 Mo) and luminous (~1.1 L*) than most of the long-duration GRB hosts. A statistical comparison based on the ages of short- and long-duration GRB host galaxies strongly suggests that short-duration GRB hosts contain, on average, older progenitors. The exceptionally high luminosities of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), gradually emerging as extremely useful probes of star formation, make them promising tools for exploration of the high-redshift Universe. Here we present a carefully selected sample of Swift GRBs, intended to estimate in an unbiased way the GRB mean redshift (z_mean), constraints on the fraction of high-redshift bursts and an upper limit on the fraction of heavily obscured afterglows. We find that z_mean = 2.8 and that at least 7% of GRBs originate at z > 5. In addition, consistent with pre-Swift observations, at most 20% of afterglows can be heavily obscured. The redshift distribution of the sample is qualitatively consistent with models where the GRB rate is proportional to the star formation rate in the Universe. We also report optical, near-infrared and X-ray observations of the afterglow of GRB 050814, which was seen to exhibit very red optical colours. By modelling its spectral energy distribution we find that z = 5.3 +/- 0.3. The high mean redshift of GRBs and their wide redshift range clearly demonstrates their suitability as efficient probes of galaxies and the intergalactic medium over a significant fraction of the history of the Universe., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. In this study optical/near-infrared(NIR) broad band photometry and optical spectroscopic observations of the GRB 030329 host galaxy are presented. The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of the host is consistent with a starburst galaxy template with a dominant stellar population age of ~150 Myr and an extinction Av ~0.6. Analysis of the spectral emission lines shows that the host is likely a low metallicity galaxy. Two independent diagnostics, based on the restframe UV continuum and the [OII] line flux, provide a consistent unextincted star formation rate of SFR ~0.6 Mo yr^-1. We present broad band photometry and spectroscopic observations of the host galaxy of GRB 030329. Analysis of the spectral emission lines shows that the host is likely a low metallicity galaxy (Z~0.004). The spectral energy distribution (SED) constructed with the photometric points has been fitted using synthetic and observational templates. The best SED fit is obtained with a starburst template with an age of ~150 Myr and an extinction Av~0.6. We find that the GRB 030329 host galaxy is a subluminous galaxy (L~0.016 L*) with a stellar mass of >~10^8 Mo. Three independent diagnostics, based on the restframe UV continuum, the [OII], and the Balmer emission lines, provide a consistent unextincted star formation rate of ~0.6 Mo yr^-1, implying a high unextincted specific star formation rate (~34 Mo yr^-1 (L/L*)^-1). We estimate that the unextincted specific star formation rate of the GRB 030329 host is higher than ~93.5% of the galaxies at a similar redshift., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. We present UBVRI-band observations taken ~300 days after the BeppoSAX gamma-ray burst GRB 000214. This GRB did not show a detectable optical afterglow, however due to the localization of a previously unknown, fading, X-ray source at a tentative redshift in the range 0.37-0.47, we have searched with the ESO 3.6 m telescope for objects with photometric redshifts consistent with the mentioned X-ray redshift range. We report four host galaxy candidates, which might be the subject of future spectroscopic observations in order to confirm their redshifts., Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

We present multiwavelength (optical/near infrared/millimetre) observations of a short duration gamma-ray burst detected by Swift (GRB 050509b) collected between 0 seconds and ~18.8 days after the event. No optical, near infrared or millimetre emission has been detected in spite of the well localised X-ray afterglow, confirming the elusiveness of the short duration events. We also discuss the possibility of the burst being located in a cluster of galaxies at z= 0.225 or beyond. In the former case, the spectral energy distribution of the neighbouring, potential host galaxy, favours a system harbouring an evolved dominant stellar population (age ~360 Myr), unlike most long duration GRB host galaxies observed so far, i.e. thus giving support to a compact binary merger origin. Any underlying supernova that could be associated with this particular event should have been at least 3 magnitudes fainter than the type Ib/c SN 1998bw and 2.3 magnitudes fainter than a typical type Ia SN., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A letters

GRB 021004 is one of the best sampled gamma-ray bursts (GRB) to date, although the nature of its light curve is still being debated. Here we present a large amount (107) of new optical, near-infrared (NIR) and millimetre observations, ranging from 2 hours to more than a year after the burst. Fitting the multiband data to a model based on multiple energy injections suggests that at least 7 refreshed shocks took place during the evolution of the afterglow, implying a total energy release (collimated within an angle of 1.8 deg) of ~ 8x10^51 erg. Analysis of the late photometry reveals that the GRB 021004 host is a low extinction (Av ~ 0.1) starburst galaxy with M_B ~ -22.0., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&Ax

We present radio, millimeter and optical observations of the afterglow of GRB030329. UBVR_{C}I_{C} photometry is presented for a period of 3 hours to 34 days after the burst. Radio monitoring at 1280 MHz has been carried out using the GMRT for more than a year. Simultaneous millimeter observations at 90 GHz and 230 GHz have been obtained from the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST) and the IRAM-PdB interferometer over more than a month following the burst. We use these data to constrain the double jet model proposed by Berger et al. (2003) for this afterglow. We also examine whether instead of the two jets being simultaneously present, the wider jet could result from the initially narrow jet, due to a fresh supply of energy from the central engine after the ``jet break''., Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A main journal. The earliest BTA (SAO RAS 6-m telescope) spectroscopic observations of the GRB 030329 optical transient (OT) are presented, which almost coincide in time with the "first break" ($t\sim 0.5$ day after the GRB) of the OT light curve. The beginning of spectral changes are seen as early as $\sim 10-12$ hours after the GRB. So, the onset of the spectral changes for $t<1$ day indicates that the contribution from Type Ic supernova (SN) into the OT optical flux can be detected earlier. The properties of early spectra of GRB 030329/SN 2003dh can be consistent with a shock moving into a stellar wind formed from the pre-SN. Such a behavior (similar to that near the UV shock breakout in SNe) can be explained by the existence of a dense matter in the immediate surroundings of massive stellar GRB/SN progenitor). The urgency is emphasized of observation of early GRB/SN spectra for solving a question that is essential for understanding GRB physical mechanism: {\it Do all} long-duration gamma-ray bursts are caused by (or physically connected to) {\it ordinary} core-collapse supernovae? We present the results of an optical and near-infrared (NIR) monitoring campaign of the counterpart of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 000911, located at redshift z=1.06, from 5 days to more than 13 months after explosion. Our extensive dataset is a factor of 2 larger and spans a time interval about 4 times longer than the ones considered previously for this GRB afterglow; this allows a more thorough analysis of its light curve and of the GRB host galaxy properties. The afterglow light curves show a single power-law temporal decline, modified at late times by light from a host galaxy with moderate intrinsic extinction, and possibly by an emerging supernova (SN). The afterglow evolution is interpreted within the classical "fireball" scenario as a weakly collimated adiabatic shock propagating in the interstellar medium. The presence of a SN light curve superimposed on the non-thermal afterglow emission is investigated: while in the optical bands no significant contribution to the total light is found from a SN, the NIR J-band data show an excess which is consistent with a SN as bright as the known hypernova SN1998bw. If the SN interpretation is true, this would be the farthest GRB-associated SN, as well as the farthest core-collapse SN, discovered to date. However, other possible explanations of this NIR excess are also investigated. Finally, we studied the photometric properties of the host, and found that it is likely to be a slightly reddened, subluminous, extreme starburst compact galaxy, with luminosity about 0.1 L*, an age of about 0.5 Gyr and a specific Star Formation Rate (SFR) of approximately 30 Msol yr-1 (L/L*)-1. We present for the first time the detection of the GRB 030328 host galaxy in four optical bands equivalent to UBRI. The host galaxy spectral energy distribution is consistent with a low extinction (E(B-V) < 0.21) starburst galaxy. We report on ground-based and HST(+STIS) imaging of the afterglow and host galaxy of the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) of March 5 2002. The GRB occurred in a R=25.17+/-0.14 galaxy, which apparently is part of an interacting system. The lightcurve of the optical afterglow shows a rebrightening, or at least a plateau, 12--16 days after the gamma-ray event. UBVRIK' multi-band imaging of the afterglow ~12 days after the GRB reveals a blue spectral energy distribution (SED). The SED is consistent with a power-law with a spectral index of \beta=-0.63+/-0.16, but there is tentative evidence for deviations away from a power-law. Unfortunately, a spectroscopic redshift has not been secured for GRB020305. From the SED we impose a redshift upper limit of z ~< 2.8, hence excluding the pseudo redshift of 4.6 reported for this burst. We discuss the possibilities for explaining the lightcurve, SED and host galaxy properties for GRB 020305. The most natural interpretation of the lightcurve and the SED is an associated supernova (SN). Our data can not precisely determine the redshift of the GRB. The most favoured explanation is a low redshift (z~0.2) SN, but a higher redshift (z>0.5) SN can not be excluded. We also discuss less likely scenarios not based on SNe, like a burst occurring in a z=2.5 galaxy with an extinction curve similar to that of the Milky Way., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 8 pages, 5 figures

The rapid dissemination of an arcmin-sized HETE-2 localization of the long-duration X-ray flash GRB 030528 led to a ground-based multi-observatory follow-up campaign. We report the discovery of the near-IR afterglow, and also describe the detection of the underlying host galaxy in the optical and near-IR bands. The afterglow is classified as "optically dark" as it was not detected in the optical band. The K-band photometry presented here suggests that the lack of optical detection was simply the result of observational limitations (lack of rapid and deep observations plus high foreground extinction). Simple power law fits to the afterglow in the K-band suggest a typically decay with a slope of alpha=1.2. The properties of the host are consistent with the idea that GRB hosts are star forming blue galaxies. The redshift of GRB 030528 can not be determined accurately, but the data favour redshifts less than unity. We report results from a comprehensive follow-up observing campaign of the afterglow of GRB 030226, including VLT spectroscopy, VLT polarimetry, and Chandra X-ray observations. In addition, we present BOOTES-1 wide-field observations at the time of the occurrence of the burst. First observations at ESO started 0.2 days after the event when the GRB afterglow was at a magnitude of R~19 and continued until the afterglow had faded below the detection threshold (R>26). No underlying host galaxy was found. The optical light curve shows a break around 0.8 days after the burst, which is achromatic within the observational errors, supporting the view that it was due to a jetted explosion. Close to the break time the degree of linear polarization of the afterglow light was less than 1.1%, which favors a uniform jet model rather than a structured one. VLT spectra show two absorption line systems at redshifts z=1.962+/-0.001 and at z=1.986+/-0.001, placing the lower limit for the redshift of the GRB close to 2. We emphasize that the kinematics and the composition of the absorbing clouds responsible for these line systems is very similar to those observed in the afterglow of GRB 021004. We report the discovery of the optical afterglow (OA) of the long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 030429, and present a comprehensive optical/near-infrared dataset used to probe the matter at different distance scales, i.e. in the burst environment, in the host galaxy and in an intervening absorber. A break in the afterglow light curve is seen approximately 1 day from the onset of the burst. The light curve displays a significant deviation from a simple broken power-law with a bright 1.5 magnitude bump with a duration of 2-3 days. The optical/near-infrared spectral energy distribution is best fit with a power-law with index beta = -0.36 +/- 0.12 reddened by an SMC-like extinction law with (a modest) A_V = 0.34 +/- 0.04. In addition, we present deep spectroscopic observations obtained with the Very Large Telescope. The redshift measured via metal absorption lines in the OA is z = 2.658 +/- 0.004. Based on the damped Ly-alpha absorption line in the OA spectrum we measure the HI column density to be log N(HI) = 21.6 +/- 0.2. This confirms the trend that GRBs tend to be located behind very large HI column densities. The resulting dust-to-gas ratio is consistent with that found in the SMC, indicating a low metallicity and/or a low dust-to-metal ratio in the burst environment. We find that a neighbouring galaxy, at a separation of only 1.2", has z = 0.841 +/- 0.001, ruling it out as the host of GRB 030429. The small impact parameter of this nearby galaxy, which is responsible for MgII absorption in the OA spectrum, is in contrast to previous identifications of most QSO absorption-selected galaxy counterparts. Finally, we demonstrate that the OA was not affected by strong gravitational lensing via the nearby galaxy., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. A&A, in press

We present optical and NIR (near infrared) follow up observations of the GRB 001109 from 1 to 300 days after the burst. No transient emission was found at these wavelengths within this GRB's (Gamma Ray Burst) 50" radius BeppoSAX error box. Strong limits (3 sigma) are set with: R >~ 21, 10.2 hr after the GRB; I >~ 23, 11.4 hr after the GRB; H >~ 20.7, 9.9 hr after the GRB; and Ks >~ 20, 9.6 hours after the GRB. We discuss whether the radio source found in the GRB's error box (Taylor et al. 2000) might be related to the afterglow. We also present a multiwavelength study of a reddened starburst galaxy, found coincident with the potential radio and the X ray afterglow. We show that our strong I band upper limit makes of the GRB 001109 the darkest one localised by the BeppoSAX's NFI (Narrow Field Instrument), and it is one of the most constraining upper limits on GRB afterglows to date. The possible identification by INTEGRAL of the EGRET source 3EG J1736-2908 with the active galactic nucleus GRS 1734-292 is discussed. The latter was discovered in 1990 and later identified with a Seyfert 1 galaxy. At the time of the compilation of the 3rd EGRET Catalog, it was not considered as a possible counterpart of the source 3EG J1736-2908, which remained unidentified. A detailed multiwavelength study of the EGRET error circle is presented, by including archival radio, soft- and hard-X observations, suggesting that GRS 1734-292 could be a likely counterpart of 3EG J1736-2908, even though this poses very interesting questions about the production mechanisms of gamma-rays with energies greater than 100 MeV., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. The primary objective of the study of unidentified EGRET sources with INTEGRAL is to locate with a few arcminute accuracy the hard X-ray / soft gamma-ray counterparts within the EGRET error circle or to determine upper limits on their emission in the INTEGRAL energy range. The INTEGRAL Galactic Plane Scan (GPS) and Galactic Centre Deep Exposure (GCDE) data have been analysed and cross-correlated with the EGRET 3^rd Catalogue to search for counterparts of EGRET sources. The IBIS detection of a source within the EGRET error circle of 3EG J1736-2908 is presented and its possible identification with the active galaxy GRS 1734-292 is discussed. Finally, preliminary results on the cross-correlation between EGRET unidentified sources and the first data from the IBIS survey of the Galactic Centre are presented., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. We present the discovery and monitoring of the optical transient (OT) associated with GRB 020410. The fading OT was found by Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations taken 28 and 65 days after burst at a position consistent with the X-ray afterglow. Subsequent re-examination of early ground based observations revealed that a faint OT was present 6 hours after burst, confirming the source association with GRB 020410. A deep non-detection after one week requires that the OT re-brightened between day 7 and day 28, and further late time HST data taken approximately 100 days after burst imply that it is very red.We compare both the flux and color of the excess with supernova models and show that the data are best explained by the presence of a Type Ib/c supernova at a redshift z ~ 0.5, which occured roughly coincident with the day of GRB., Comment: 23 Pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

We present photometry and spectroscopy of the afterglow of GRB 030323. VLT spectra of the afterglow show damped Lya (DLA) absorption and low- and high-ionization lines at a redshift z=3.3718+-0.0005. The inferred neutral hydrogen column density, log N(HI)=21.90+-0.07, is larger than any (GRB- or QSO-) DLA HI column density inferred directly from Lya in absorption. From the afterglow photometry, we derive a conservative upper limit to the host-galaxy extinction: A(V)<0.5 mag. The iron abundance is [Fe/H]=-1.47+-0.11, while the metallicity of the gas as measured from sulphur is [S/H]=-1.26+-0.20. We derive an upper limit on the H2 molecular fraction of 2N(H2)/(2N(H2)+N(HI))<~10^-6. In the Lya trough, a Lya emission line is detected, which corresponds to a star-formation rate (not corrected for dust extinction) of roughly 1 Msun per year. All these results are consistent with the host galaxy of GRB 030323 consisting of a low metallicity gas with a low dust content. We detect fine-structure lines of silicon, SiII*, which have never been clearly detected in QSO-DLAs; this suggests that these lines are produced in the vicinity of the GRB explosion site. Under the assumption that these fine-structure levels are populated by particle collisions, we estimate the HI volume density to be n_HI=100-10000 cm^-3. HST/ACS imaging 4 months after the burst shows an extended AB(F606W)=28.0+-0.3 mag object at a distance of 0.14" (1kpc) from the early afterglow location, which presumably is the host galaxy of GRB 030323., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The attempt to secure conclusive, spectroscopic evidence for the GRB/SN connection has been a central theme in most GRB observing time proposals since the discovery of the very unusual GRB980425 associated with the peculiar type Ib/c SN1998bw. GRB030329 provided this evidence to everybody's satisfaction. In this contribution we show the results of a spectroscopic campaign of the supernova associated with GRB030329 carried out at ESOs Very Large Telescope.
