We present new observational results of NGC 7619, an elliptical galaxy with a prominent X-ray tail and a dominant member of the Pegasus group. With Chandra and XMM-Newton observations, we confirm the presence of a long X-ray tail in the SW direction; moreover, we identify for the first time a sharp discontinuity of the X-ray surface brightness in the opposite (NE) side of the galaxy. The density, temperature and pressure jump at the NE discontinuity suggest a Mach number ~1, corresponding to a galaxy velocity of ~500 km s-1, relative to the surrounding hot gas. Spectral analysis of these data shows that the Iron abundance of the hot gaseous medium is much higher (1-2 solar) near the center of NGC 7619 and in the tail extending from the core than in the surrounding regions (< 1/2 solar), indicating that the gas in the tail is originated from the galaxy. The possible origin of the head-tail structure is either on-going ram-pressure stripping or sloshing. The morphology of the structure is more in line with a ram pressure stripping phenomenon, while the position of NGC 7619 at the center of the Pegasus I group, and its dominance, would prefer sloshing., Comment: ApJ accepted to appear in the 2008 December 1 issue; Added discussion on sloshing

Our X-ray study of the nuclear activity in a new sample of six quiescent early-type galaxies, and in a larger sample from the literature, confirmed (Soria et al., Paper I) that the Bondi accretion rate of diffuse hot gas is not a good indicator of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) X-ray luminosity. Here we suggest that a more reliable estimate of the accretion rate must include the gas released by the stellar population inside the sphere of influence of the SMBH, in addition to the Bondi inflow of hot gas across that surface. We use optical surface-brightness profiles to estimate the mass-loss rate from stars in the nuclear region: we show that for our sample of galaxies it is an order of magnitude higher (~ 10^{-4} - 10^{-3} M_sun/yr) than the Bondi inflow rate of hot gas, as estimated from Chandra (Paper I). Only by taking into account both sources of fuel can we constrain the true accretion rate, the accretion efficiency, and the power budget. Radiatively efficient accretion is ruled out, for quiescent SMBHs. For typical radiatively inefficient flows, the observed X-ray luminosities of the SMBHs imply accretion fractions ~ 1 - 10% (ie, ~ 90 - 99% of the available gas does not reach the SMBH) for at least five of our six target galaxies, and most of the other galaxies with known SMBH masses. We discuss the conditions for mass conservation inside the sphere of influence, so that the total gas injection is balanced by accretion plus outflows. We show that a fraction of the total accretion power (mechanical plus radiative) would be sufficient to sustain a self-regulating, slow outflow which removes from the nuclear region all the gas that does not sink into the BH (``BH feedback''). We have studied the nuclear activity in a sample of six quiescent early-type galaxies, with new Chandra data and archival HST optical images. Their nuclear sources have X-ray luminosities ~ 10^{38} - 10^{39} erg/s (L_X/L_Edd ~ 10^{-8} - 10^{-7}), and colors or spectra consistent with accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs)--except for the nucleus of NGC 4486B, which is softer than typical AGN spectra. In a few cases, the X-ray morphology of the nuclear sources shows hints of marginally extended structures, in addition to the surrounding diffuse thermal emission from hot gas, which is detectable on scales >~ 1 kpc. In one case (NGC 5845), a dusty disk may partially obstruct our direct view of the SMBH. We have estimated the temperature and density of the hot interstellar medium, which is one major source of fuel for the accreting SMBH; typical central densities are n_e ~ (0.02 +/- 0.01) cm^{-3}. Assuming that the hot gas is captured by the SMBH at the Bondi rate, we show that the observed X-ray luminosities are too faint to be consistent with standard disk accretion, but brighter than predicted by radiatively-inefficient solutions (eg, ADAF). In total, there are ~ 20 galaxies for which SMBH mass, hot gas density, and nuclear X-ray luminosity are simultaneously known. In some cases, the nuclear sources are brighter than predicted by the ADAF model; in other cases, they are consistent or fainter. We discuss the apparent lack of correlations between Bondi rate and X-ray luminosity, and suggest that, in order to understand the observed distribution, we need to know two additional parameters: the amount of gas supplied by the stellar population inside the accretion radius, and the fraction (possibly << 1) of the total gas available that is accreted by the SMBH. We present a systematic study of the low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) populations of 6 elliptical galaxies. We utilize Chandra archival data to identify 665 X-ray point sources and HST archival data supplemented by ground observations to identify 6173 GCs. We associate 209 LMXBs with red GC (RGC) and 76 LMXBs with blue GCs (BGC), while we find no optical GC counterpart for 258 LMXBs. This is the largest GC-LMXB sample studied so far. We confirm previous reports suggesting that the fraction of GCs associated with LMXBs is 3 times larger in RGCs than in BGCs, indicating that metallicity is a primary factor in the GC-LMXB formation. While as already known, the brighter (and bigger) GCs have a higher probability to host LMXBs, we find that this optical luminosity (or mass) dependency is stronger in RGCs than in BGCs. We also find that GCs located near the galaxy center have a higher probability to harbor LMXBs compared to those in the outskirts. The radial distributions of GC-LMXBs (for both RGC and BGC) are steeper than those of the whole optical GC sample, but consistent with those of the optical halo light, suggesting that there must be another parameter (in addition to metallicity) governing LMXB formation in GCs. This second parameter must depend on the galacto-centric distance. We find no statistically significant difference in the X-ray properties among RGC-LMXBs, BGC-LMXBs and field-LMXBs. The similarity of the X-ray spectra of BGC-LMXBs and RGC-LMXBs is inconsistent with the irradiation-induced stellar wind model prediction. The similarity of the X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) of GC-LMXBs and field-LMXBs indicates that there is no significant difference in the fraction of BH binaries present in these two populations, in contrast to Galactic LMXBs where BH binaries are not found in GCs., Comment: 52 pages

We present the results of the X-ray XMM-Newton observations of NGC 507, a dominant elliptical galaxy in a small group of galaxies, and report 'super-solar' metal abundances of both Fe and a-elements in the hot ISM of this galaxy. We find Z_Fe = 2-3 times solar inside the D25 ellipse of NGC 507. This is the highest Z_Fe reported so far for the hot halo of an elliptical galaxy; this high Iron abundance is fully consistent with the predictions of stellar evolution models, which include the yield of both type II and Ia supernovae. The spatially resolved, high quality XMM spectra provide enough statistics to formally require at least three emission components: two soft thermal components indicating a range of temperatures in the hot ISM, plus a harder component, consistent with the integrated output of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). The abundance of a-elements (most accurately determined by Si) is also found to be super-solar. The a-elements to Fe abundance ratio is close to the solar ratio, suggesting that ~70% of the Iron mass in the hot ISM was originated from SNe Type Ia. We have derived bias-corrected X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) of sources detected in a uniformly selected sample of 14 E and S0 galaxies observed with Chandra ACIS-S3. The entire sample yields 985 point-like X-ray sources, with typical detection of 30-140 sources per galaxy. After correcting for incompleteness, the individual XLFs are statistically consistent with a single power-law of a (differential) XLF slope b = 1.8 - 2.2 (with a typical error of 0.2-0.3). A break at or near LX,Eddington, as reported in the literature for some of these galaxies, is not required in any case. Although the combined XLF is marginally consistent with a single power-law (with b = 2.1 +- 0.1), a broken power-law gives an improved fit. The best-fit slope is b = 1.8 +- 0.2 in the low-luminosity range LX = a few x 1037 - 5 x 1038 ergs s-1. At higher luminosities, the slope is steeper, b = 2.8 +- 0.6. The break luminosity is 5 +- 1.6 x 1038 ergs s-1 (with an error at 90%), which may be consistent with the Eddington luminosity of neutron stars with the largest possible mass (3 Mo), of He-enriched neutron star binaries, or low-mass stellar mass black holes. If the change in XLF slope at high luminosities is real, our result would imply a different population of high luminosity sources, instead of a beaming effect. We confirm that the total X-ray luminosity of LMXBs is correlated with the optical and more tightly with the near-IR luminosities, but in both cases the scatter exceeds that expected from measurement errors. We report the results of the Chandra ACIS sub-arcsecond resolution X-ray observation of the archetypal merger radio galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax A). We confirm the presence of fine sub-structures in the hot Interstellar Medium (ISM). Some of these are likely to result from interaction with the radio jets, while others may be related to a complex intermingling of different phases of the ISM. We detect a low-luminosity X-ray AGN with Lx = 5 x 1039 erg sec-1 (in 0.3-8 keV) and a G=1.7 power-law energy spectrum. We also detect 81 point sources within the 25th magnitude isophotal ellipse of NGC 1316 (Lx in the range of 2 x 1037 - 2 x 1039 erg sec-1), with hard (kT~5 keV) X-ray spectra, typical of X-ray binaries, and a spatial radial distribution consistent with that of the optical (i.e., stellar) surface brightness. We derive the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of these sources, correcting for the incompleteness at the faint end caused by the presence of the diffuse emission from the hot ISM in the central regions of NGC 1316 and by the widening of the Chandra PSFs at increasing distance from the aim point. With these corrections, the XLF is well reproduced by a single -unbroken- power law with a slope of -1.3 down to our threshold luminosity of ~3 x 1037 erg sec-1. The hot ISM has temperatures in the 0.5 - 0.6 keV range, its surface brightness distribution is more centrally concentrated than that of the point sources, and its temperature appears to decrease at larger radii. These properties suggest that the ISM may be subject to partial winds. Taking into account the spectral complexity of the ISM, and the presence of unresolved low luminosity X-ray sources (which can be inferred from the spectra), we constrain the metal abundance of the hot ISM to be Z = 0.25 - 1.3 solar (90% confidence)., Comment: 33 page, 15 figures, revised with additional simulations; accepted in ApJ; PDF file available in http://hea-www.harvard.edu/~kim/transfer/N1316/

We have observed NGC 1316 (Fornax A) with the ROSAT HRI. In this paper, we present the results of these observations and we complement them with the spectral analysis of the archival PSPC data. The spectral properties suggest the presence of a significant component of thermal X-ray emission (> 60%), amounting to ~10^{9}Mo of hot ISM. Within 3' from the nucleus of NGC 1316, the HRI X-ray surface brightness falls as r^{-2}. In the inner ~40", the X-ray surface brightness is significantly elongated (e ~ 0.3). This flattened X-ray feature is confirmed by a straightforward statistics test as well as moment analysis. By comparing the morphology of the X-ray emission with the distribution of optical dust patches, we find that the X-ray emission is significantly reduced at the locations where the dust patches are more pronounced, indicating that at least some of the X-ray photons are absorbed by the cold ISM. We also compare the distribution of the hot and cold ISM with that of the ionized gas, using recently obtained Ha CCD data. We find that the ionized gas is distributed roughly along the dust patches and follows the large scale X-ray distribution at r > 1' from the nucleus. However, there is no one-to-one correspondence between ionized gas and hot gas. Both morphological relations and kinematics suggest different origins for hot and cold ISM. The radio jets in projection appear to pass perpendicularly through the central X-ray ellipsoid. X-ray astronomy needs to set bold, science driven goals for the next decade. Only with defined science goals can we know what to work on, and a funding agency appreciate the need for significant technology developments. To be a forefront science the scale of advance must be 2 decades of sensitivity per decade of time. To be stable to new discoveries these should be general, discovery space, goals. A detailed consideration of science goals leads us to propose that a mirror collecting area of 10 sq.meters with arcsecond resolution, good field of view (>10 arcmin), and with high spectral resolution spectroscopy (R=1000-10,000) defines the proper goal. This is about 100 times AXAF, or 30 times XMM. This workshop has shown that this goal is only a reasonable stretch from existing concepts, and may be insufficiently bold. An investment of roughly $10M/year for 5 years in X-ray optics technologies, comparable to NASA's investment in ASTRO-E or a SMEX, is needed, and would pay off hugely more than any small X-ray mission., Comment: 20 pages, Latex, ngxo.sty file included Talk given at ``Next Generation X-ray Observatories'' Workshop, Leicester, England (June 1996)

We present a comprehensive high spatial resolution imaging study of globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 1399, thecentral giant elliptical cD galaxy in the Fornax galaxy cluster, conducted with the Advanced Camera for Surveys(ACS) aboard theHubble Space Telescope(HST).Using a novel technique to construct drizzled point-spreadfunction libraries for HSTACS data, we accurately determine the fidelity of GC structural parameter measurementsfrom detailed artificial star cluster experiments and show the superior robustness of the GC half-light radius,rh,compared with other GC structural parameters, such as King core and tidal radius. The measurement ofrhfor themajor fraction of the NGC 1399 GC system reveals a trend of increasingrhversus galactocentric distance,Rgal,out to about 10 kpc and a flat relation beyond. This trend is very similar for blue and red GCs, which are found tohave a mean size ratio ofrh,redrh,blue0.820.11 at all galactocentric radii from the core regions of the galaxyout to40 kpc. This suggests that the size difference between blue and red GCs is due to internal mechanismsrelated to the evolution of their constituent stellar populations. Modeling the mass density profile of NGC 1399shows that additional external dynamical mechanisms are required to limit the GC size in the galaxy halo regionstorh2 pc. We suggest that this may be realized by an exotic GC orbit distribution function, an extended darkmatter halo, andor tidal stress induced by the increased stochasticity in the dwarf halo substructure at largergalactocentric distances. We compare our results with the GCrhdistribution functions in various galaxies and findthat the fraction of extended GCs withrh5 pc is systematically larger in late-type galaxies compared with GCsystems in early-type galaxies. This is likely due to the dynamically more violent evolution of early-type galaxies.We match our GCrhmeasurements with radial velocity data from the literature and split the resulting sample at themedianrhvalue into compact and extended GCs. We find that compact GCs show a significantly smaller line-of-sight velocity dispersion,cmp22525 km s1, than their extended counterparts,ext31721 km s1.Considering the weaker statistical correlation in the GCrhcolor and the GCrhRgalrelations, the more significantGC sizedynamics relation appears to be astrophysically more relevant and hints at the dominant influence of theGC orbit distribution function on the evolution of GC structural parameters.

The proposed work did not result in refereed publications, but it contributed greatly to our knowledge of E and S0 galaxies, and the results were quoted in a number of talks and reviews. In particular, the effects of merging and interactions in clusters of early-type galaxies on their ability to retain an X-ray emitting halo are addressed in the recent review papers. These results were also quoted in conference papers. The galpipe data processing was completed and the database assembled in collaboration with our colleagues of the Osservatorio Astronomico di Palermo (Italy). Results on E and SO galaxies include the analysis of the ROSAT HRI images of NGC 1399 and NGC 507, which also include Galpipe source detection results.

We have conducted bivariate and multivariate statistical analysis of data measuring the integrated luminosity, shape, and potential depth of the Einstein sample of early-type galaxies (presented by Fabbiano et al. 1992). We find significant correlations between the X-ray properties and the axial ratios (a/b) of our sample, such that the roundest systems tend to have the highest L(sub x) and L(sub x)/L(sub B). The most radio-loud objects are also the roundest. We confirm the assertion of Bender et al. (1989) that galaxies with high L(sub x) are boxy (have negative a(sub 4)). Both a/b and a(sub 4) are correlated with L(sub B), but not with IRAS 12 um and 100 um luminosities. There are strong correlations between L(sub x), Mg(sub 2), and sigma(sub nu) in the sense that those systems with the deepest potential wells have the highest L(sub x) and Mg(sub 2). Thus the depth of the potential well appears to govern both the ability to reatin an ISM at the present epoch and to retain the enriched ejecta of early star formation bursts. Both L(sub x)/L(sub B) and L(sub 6) (the 6 cm radio luminosity) show threshold effects with sigma(sub nu) exhibiting sharp increases at log sigma(sub nu) approximately = 2.2. Finally, there is clearly an interrelationship between the various stellar and structural parameters: The scatter in the bivariate relationships between the shape parameters (a/b and a(sub 4)) and the depth parameter sigma(sub nu) is a function of abundance in the sense that, for a given a(sub 4) or a/b, the systems with the highest sigma(sub nu) also have the highest Mg(sub 2). Furthermore, for a constant sigma(sun nu), disky galaxies tend to have higher Mg(sub 2) than boxy ones. Alternatively, for a given abundance, boxy ellipticals tend to be more massive than disky ellipticals. One possibility is that early-type galaxies of a given mass, originating from mergers (boxy ellipticals), have lower abundances than 'primordial' (disky) early-type galaxies. Another is that disky inner isophotes are due not to primordial dissipation collapse, but to either the self-gravitating inner disks of captured spirals or the dissipational collapse of new disk structures from the premerger ISM. The high measured nuclear Mg(sub 2) values would thus be due to enrichment from secondary bursts of star formation triggered by the merging event.

The EINSTEIN galaxy catalog contains x-ray data for 148 early-type (E and SO) galaxies. A detailed analysis of the global properties of this sample are studied. By comparing the x-ray properties with other tracers of the ISM, as well as with observables related to the stellar dynamics and populations of the sample, we expect to determine more clearly the physical relationships that determine the evolution of early-type galaxies. Previous studies with smaller samples have explored the relationships between x-ray luminosity (L(sub x)) and luminosities in other bands. Using our larger sample and the statistical techniques of survival analysis, a number of these earlier analyses were repeated. For our full sample, a strong statistical correlation is found between L(sub X) and L(sub B) (the probability that the null hypothesis is upheld is P less than 10(exp -4) from a variety of rank correlation tests. Regressions with several algorithms yield consistent results.

Over the last few years, the knowledge of the interstellar matter (ISM) of early type galaxies has increased dramatically. Many early type galaxies are now known to have ISM in three different phases: cold (neutral hydrogen (HI), dust and molecular material), warm (ionized) and hot (S-ray emitting) gas. Early type galaxies have smaller masses of cold ISM (10 to the 7th power - 10 to the 8th power solar mass; Jura et al. 1987) than later type spiral galaxies, while they have far more hot gas (10 to the 9th power - 10 to the tenth power solar mass; Forman et al. 1985, Canizares et al. 1987). In order to understand the relationship between the different phases of the ISM and the role of the ISM in fueling radio continuum sources and star formation, researchers compared observational data from a wide range of wavelengths.

The study of the X-ray properties of galaxies is discussed in terms of existing observational results and the capacity for interpreting the data. The NASA Einstein Observatory data is first examined to describe the X-ray properties of spiral and irregular galaxies as well as elliptical and SO galaxies. Issues that remain to be addressed can be explored by studying the X-ray properties of very luminous 'super-Eddington' sources, starburst galaxies, and different phases of the interstellar medium. The specific requirements are set forth for the observatories conducting the research; particular conditions are given for detecting galaxies, high-resolution studies of individual galaxies, bandwidth, spectral studies, and time-variability studies. An ideal X-ray telescope is described based on these conditions, the primary features of which are a collecting area greater than 100 sq m, a large bandwidth, and the capacity for both photometric and spectroscopic investigation.

Two complete subsamples of early and late type spiral galaxies were mapped with the VLA in order to explore their radio and optical properties. The choice of the samples is explained, and the observational procedure and data reduction are described. The detection rate was 97 percent, with a detection limit of the order of 1-2 mJy. Total intensity data at 20 cm are presented for the whole sample, and 6 cm data for 11 galaxies. The results are presented in the form of tables and radio contour maps, and are discussed in comparison with previous work.

The properties of the X-ray emitting gas in a sample of 81 E and S0 galaxies observed with the Einstein Observatory are studied. Measured fluxes for 55 of the galaxies and upper limits for 26 of them are reported. An attempt is made to use consistent optical parameters for the galaxies, including a correction to the velocities for the Virgocentric flow. The sample is then used to explore the contribution from discrete sources, the global physical properties of the hot gas, and the implications for heating by supernovae and gravity. Finally, the question of the presence of heavy halos is addressed.
