Aims. We present the results from a comprehensive spectroscopic survey of the WINGS (WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey) clusters, a program called WINGS-SPE. The WINGS-SPE sample consists of 48 clusters, 22 of which are in the southern sky and 26 in the north. The main goals of this spectroscopic survey are: (1) to study the dynamics and kinematics of the WINGS clusters and their constituent galaxies, (2) to explore the link between the spectral properties and the morphological evolution in different density environments and across a wide range in cluster X-ray luminosities and optical properties. Methods. Using multi object fiber fed spectrographs, we observed our sample of WINGS cluster galaxies at an intermediate resolu- tion of 6-9 A and, using a cross-correlation technique, we measured redshifts with a mean accuracy of about 45 km/s. Results. We present redshift measurements for 6137 galaxies and their first analyses. Details of the spectroscopic observations are reported. The WINGS-SPE has about 30% overlap with previously published data sets, allowing us to do both a complete comparison with the literature and to extend the catalogs. Conclusions. Using our redshifts, we calculate the velocity dispersion for all the clusters in the WINGS-SPE sample. We almost trip- licate the number of member galaxies known in each cluster with respect to previous works. We search for and characterize substructures in the projected distribution of galaxies observed in the wide field CCD images of the 77 nearby clusters of the WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey (WINGS). This sample is complete in X-ray flux in the redshift range 0.04

AIMS: We present in this work low and intermediate resolution spectroscopic data collected for 152 early type galaxies in 8 nearby clusters with z $\leq$ 0.10. METHODS: We use low resolution data to produce the redshift and the K-correction for every individual galaxy, as well as to give their overall spectral energy distribution, and some spectral indicators, including the 4000\AA break, the Mg$_2$ strength, and the NaD equivalent width.We have also obtained higher resolution data for early type galaxies in three of the clusters, to determine their central velocity dispersion. RESULTS: The effect of the resolution on the measured parameters is discussed. CONCLUSIONS: New accurate systemic redshift and velocity dispersion is presented for four of the surveyed clusters, A98, A3125, A3330, and DC2103-39. We have found that the K-correction values for E/S0 bright galaxies in a given nearby clusters are very similar. This is the first paper of a series that will present data and scientific results from the WINGS project, a wide-field, multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopic survey of galaxies in 77 nearby clusters. The sample was extracted from the ROSAT catalogs with constraints on the redshift (0.0420). The global goal of the WINGS project is the systematic study of the local cosmic variance of the cluster population and of the properties of cluster galaxies as a function of cluster properties and local environment. This data collection will allow to define a local 'Zero-Point' reference against which to gauge the cosmic evolution when compared to more distant clusters. The core of the project consists of wide-field optical imaging of the selected clusters in the B and V bands. We have also completed a multi-fiber, medium resolution spectroscopic survey for 51 of the clusters in the master sample. In addition, a NIR (JK) survey of ~50 clusters and an H_alpha + UV survey of some 10 clusters are presently ongoing, while a very-wide-field optical survey has also been programmed. In this paper we briefly outline the global objectives and the main characteristics of the WINGS project. Moreover, the observing strategy and the data reduction of the optical imaging survey (WINGS-OPT) are presented. We have achieved a photometric accuracy of ~0.025mag, reaching completeness to V~23.5. Field size and resolution (FWHM) span the absolute intervals (1.6-2.7)Mpc and (0.7-1.7)kpc, respectively, depending on the redshift and on the seeing. We present a detailed analysis of the evolution of the rest-frame B-band morphology of K-selected galaxies with 0 < z < 2.5. This work is based on the K20 spectroscopic sample (Ks<20) located within the Chandra Deep Field South area, coupled with the public deep GOODS HST+ACSmulti-band optical imaging available in that field. Thanks to the spectroscopic completeness of this catalog reaching 94%, we can compare the morphological and spectroscopic properties of galaxies with unprecedented detail. Our morphological analysis includes visual inspection and automatic procedures using both parametric (e.g. the Sersic indices treated by the GALFIT and GASPHOT packages) and non-parametric (the Concentration, Asymmetry and clumpineSs, CAS) methods. Our analysis classifies the K20 galaxies as: 60/300 (20%, class 1) normal ellipticals/S0; 14/300 (4%, class 2) perturbed or peculiar ellipticals; 80/300 (27%, class 3) normal spirals; 48/300 (16%, class 4) perturbed or actively star-forming spirals; 98/300 (33%, class 5) irregulars. The evolution of the merging fraction is constrained up to z~2, by carefully accounting effects of morphological k-correction: both asymmetry criterion and pair statistic show an increasing merging fraction as a function of the redshift. We finally analyse the redshift-dependence of the effective radii for early- and late-type galaxies and find some mild evidence for a decrease with z of the early-type galaxy sizes, while disks and irregulars remain constant. Altogether, this analysis of the K20 sample indicates the large predominance of spirals and irregulars at 0.5

Broad and narrow band images and long slit spectroscopy of IC1182 are presented. The broad band images reveal a distorted morphology with a large, heavily obscured disk-like structure and several knots in the central region. Galactic material, some of it in the form of two tails, is detected well beyond the main body of the galaxy. The second, fainter tail and several knots are reported here for the first time. The narrow band images show that the galaxy is a powerful emitter. The emission in the main lines extends all over the galaxy, with plumes and arc-like structures seen in H$\alpha$ at large distances from the center. The uncorrected H$\alpha$ flux corresponds to 3.51$\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$, 3 times that of Arp 220. The internal extinction deduced from the Balmer decrement is high all along the slit, with E$_{B-V}\approx$ 1. There are no clear signs of nuclear activity and the observed line ratios can be explained in terms of stellar photoionization. The metallicity of the gas in the two brightest central knots is low, 0.1 Z$_{\odot}$ and 0.06 Z$_{\odot}$ respectively. In the main body of the galaxy, besides the reported knots, the distribution of the ionized gas resembles that of an inclined disk about 12 kpc in size. The rotation pattern is complex and corresponds to two identifiable disk galaxies with observed rotation amplitudes of 200 \kms and 100 \kms respectively. The data presented here indicate that IC 1182 is a high luminosity starburst system, involving two systems in the process of merging, with two tidal tails emerging from the central region of the galaxy., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. We present a technique for the estimation of photometric redshifts based on feed-forward neural networks. The Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) Artificial Neural Network is used to predict photometric redshifts in the HDF-S from an ultra deep multicolor catalog. Various possible approaches for the training of the neural network are explored, including the deepest and most complete spectroscopic redshift catalog currently available (the Hubble Deep Field North dataset) and models of the spectral energy distribution of galaxies available in the literature. The MLP can be trained on observed data, theoretical data and mixed samples. The prediction of the method is tested on the spectroscopic sample in the HDF-S (44 galaxies). Deep VLT optical spectroscopy, HST+ACS (GOODS) imaging and VLA observations are used to unveil the nature of a complete sample of 47 EROs with R-Ks>5 and Ks<20. The spectroscopic redshift completeness is 62%. Morphological classification was derived for each ERO through visual inspection and surface brightness profile fitting. Three main ERO morphological types are found: E/S0 galaxies (30-37%), spiral-like (24-46%) and irregular systems (17-39%). The only ERO detected in the radio is likely to host an obscured AGN. The average radio luminosity of the star-forming EROs undetected in the radio implies star formation rates of the order of 33 Msun yr^-1. The colors, redshifts and masses of the E/S0 galaxy subsample imply a minimum formation redshift z_f \sim 2. With this z_f there is enough time to have old and massive stellar spheroids already assembled at z \sim 1. We make use of two empirical relations between the black hole mass and the global properties (bulge luminosity and stellar velocity dispersion) of nearby elliptical galaxies, to infer the mass of the central black hole (M_BH) in low redshift radiogalaxies. Using the most recent determinations of black hole masses for inactive early type galaxies we show that the bulge luminosity and the central velocity dispersion are almost equally correlated (similar scatter) with the central black-hole mass. Applying these relations to two large and homogeneous datasets of radiogalaxies we find that they host black-holes whose mass ranges between ~5x10^7 to ~6x10^9 M_sun (average ~8.9). M_BH is found to be proportional to the mass of the bulge (M_bulge). The distribution of the ratio M_BH/M_bulge has a mean value of 8x10^{-4} and shows a scatter that is consistent with that expected from the associated errors. At variance with previous claims no significant correlation is instead found between M_BH (or M_bulge) and the radio power at 5GHz., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

A two-band (B and V) wide-field imaging survey of a complete, all-sky X-ray selected sample of 78 clusters in the redshift range z=0.04-0.07 is presented. The aim of this survey is to provide the astronomical community with a complete set of homogeneous, CCD-based surface photometry and morphological data of nearby cluster galaxies located within 1.5 Mpc from the cluster center. The data collection has been completed in seven observing runs at the INT and ESO-2.2m telescopes. For each cluster, photometric data of about 2500 galaxies (down to V~23) and detailed morphological information of about 600 galaxies (down to V~21) are obtained by using specially designed automatic tools. As a natural follow up of the photometric survey, we also illustrate a long term spectroscopic program we are carrying out with the WHT-WYFFOS and AAT-2dF multifiber spectrographs. Star formation rates and histories, as well as metallicity estimates will be derived for about 350 galaxies per cluster from the line indices and equivalent widths measurements, allowing us to explore the link between the spectral properties and the morphological evolution in high- to low-density environments, and across a wide range in cluster X-ray luminosities and optical properties., Comment: 12 pages, 10 eps figures, Proceedings of the SAIt Conference 2002

This is the first paper of a series investigating the scaling relations of early-type galaxies in clusters. Here we illustrate the multi-band imagery and the image reduction and calibration procedures relative to the whole sample of 22 clusters at 0.05 < z < 0.25. We also present the detailed surface photometry of 312 early-type galaxies in 7 clusters in the first redshift bin, z~0.025-0.075. We give for each galaxy the complete set of luminosity and geometrical profiles, and and a number of global, photometric and morphological parameters. They have been evaluated taking into account the effects of seeing. Internal consistency checks and comparisons with data in the literature confirm the quality of our analysis. We present a two-band, wide-field imaging survey of an X-ray selected sample of 78 clusters in the redshift range z=0.03-0.07. We collected photometrical and dynamical data for 73 low red-shift (z<0.2) Radio Galaxies (LzRG) in order to study their Fundamental Plane (FP). For 22 sources we also present new velocity dispersion data, that complement the photometric data given in our previous study of LzRG (Govoni et al. 2000a). It is found that the FP of LzRG is similar to the one defined by non-active elliptical galaxies, with LzRG representing the brightest end of the population of early type galaxies. Since the FP mainly reflects the virial equilibrium condition, our result implies that the global properties of early--type galaxies (defining the FP) are not influenced by the presence of gas accretion in the central black hole. This is fully in agreement with the recent results in black hole demography, showing that virtually all luminous spheroidal galaxies host a massive black hole and therefore may potentially become active. We have extended our previous analysis of morphologically selected elliptical and S0 galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) North to include HST data in the HDF South and the HDFS-NICMOS areas. Our final sample amounts to 69 E/S0 galaxies with $K<20.15$ over an area of 11 square arcmins. Although a moderately small number over a modest sky area, this sample benefits of the best imaging and photometric data available on high-redshift galaxies. Multi-waveband photometry allows us to estimate with good accuracy the redshifts for the majority of these galaxies which lack a spectroscopic measure. We confirm our previous findings that massive E/S0s tend to disappear from flux-limited samples at $z>1.4$. This adds to the evidence that the rest-frame colours and SEDs of the numerous objects found at $0.8

We analyze a morphologically-selected complete sample of 52 late-type (spiral and irregular) galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field North with total K-magnitudes brighter than K=20.47. This sample exploits in particular the ultimate imaging quality achieved by HST in this field, allowing us to clearly disentangle the galaxy morphologies, based on accurate profiles of the surface brightness distributions. Our purpose was to investigate systematic differences between the two classes, as for colours, redshift distributions and ages of the dominant stellar populations. This sample appears to miss significantly galaxies above z=1.4 (in a similar way as an early-type galaxy sample previously studied by us), a fact which may be explained as a global decline of the underlying mass function for galaxies at these high redshifts. Differences between early and late-types are apparent -particularly in the colour distributions and the evolutionary star-formation (SF) rates per unit volume-, although the complication in spectro-photometric modelling introduced by dust-extinction in the gas-rich systems prevents us to reach conclusive results on the single sources. However, we find that an integrated quantity like the comoving star-formation rate density (SFR(t)) as a function of redshift is much less affected by these uncertainties: by combining this with the previously studied early-type galaxy sample, we find a shallower dependence of SFR(t) on z between z=0.2 and z=1.5 than found by Lilly et al. We present GASPHOT, a tool for automated surface photometry and morphological classification of galaxies in deep and wide fields. The requirements for any such tool are reviewed, and its use for the classification of high-z galaxies is presented. In the case if HDF-like images, for galaxies having a magnitude ranging from 24 to 27.5, the uncertainties on the photometric parameters derived from GASPHOT are respectively 0.02-0.1 on magnitude, 0.03 on the logarithm of the scale length, 0.02-0.5 on the Sersic index n used to classify the surface brightness profile of the galaxies. The morphological types of galaxies in nine clusters in the redshift range 0.1

Optical imaging observations for 50 radio galaxies are presented. For each object isophotal contours, photometric profiles, structural parameters (position angle, ellipticity, Fourier coefficients), and total magnitudes are given. These observations, obtained in the Cousins R band, complement the data presented in a previous paper and are part of a larger project aimed at studying the optical properties of low redshift (z<0.12) radio galaxies (Govoni et al. 1999). We present morphological and photometric properties of 79 low redshift (z<0.12) radio galaxies extracted from two radio flux limited samples of radio sources. All objects are imaged in the R band and for a subsample we have also obtained B band images. The sample includes sources of both FRI and FRII radio morphological type. Through the decomposition of the luminosity profiles and the analysis of the structural profiles (ellipticity, PA, c4) of the galaxies we are able to characterize in detail the optical properties of the radio galaxies. The average absolute magnitude is M_HOST(tot)=-24.0 with a clear trend for FRI sources to be 0.5 mag brighter than FRII galaxies. In about 40% of the objects observed we find an excess of light in the nucleus that is attributed to the presence of a nuclear point source whose luminosity is on average 1-2% of the total flux of the host galaxy. The luminosity of these nuclear point sources appears correlated with the core radio power of the galaxies. Radio galaxies follow the same mu_e - R_e relationship as normal elliptical galaxies. The distribution of ellipticity, the amount of twisting and shape of isophotes (boxy,disky) do not differ significantly from other ellipticals. The evidence for recent interactions is therefore rather modest. Finally on average radio galaxies are bluer and have a color dispersion larger than normal elliptical galaxies, and the average color gradient in radio galaxies appears slightly steeper than in normal ellipticals. These results support a scenario where radio emission is weakly related with the overall properties and/or the activity have negligible effects on the global characteristics of the host galaxy., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

We summarize our modelling of galaxy photometric evolution (GRASIL code). By including the effects of dust grains and PAHs molecules in a two phases clumpy medium, where clumps are associated to star forming regions, we reproduce the observed UV to radio SEDs of galaxies with star formation rates from zero to several hundreds $M_\odot/yr$. GRASIL is a powerful tool to investigate the star formation, the initial mass function and the supernovae rate in nearby starbursts and normal galaxies, as well as to predict the evolution of luminosity functions of different types of galaxies at wavelengths covering six decades. It may be interfaced with any device providing the star formation and metallicity histories of a galaxy. As an application, we have investigated the properties of early-type galaxies in the HDF, tracking the contribution of this population to the cosmic star-formation history, which has a broad peak between z=1.5 and 4. To explain the absence of objects at z $\gsim$ 1.3, we suggest a sequence of dust-enshrouded merging-driven starbursts in the first few Gyrs of galaxies lifetime. We have investigated the properties of a complete K-band selected sample of 35 elliptical and S0 galaxies brighter than K=20.15 in the Hubble Deep Field, as representative of the field galaxy population. This sample has been derived from deep K-band image by the KPNO-IRIM camera, by applying a rigorous morphological classification scheme based on quantitative analyses of the surface brightness profiles. The broad-band spectra of the sample galaxies allow us to date their dominant stellar populations. The majority of bright early-types in this field are found at redshifts z<1.3 to display colors indicative of a fairly wide range of ages (typically 1.5 to 3 Gyrs). We find that the major episodes of star-formation building up typical M_star galaxies have taken place during a wide redshift interval 11.3, which should be detectable during the luminous star-formation phase expected to happen at these redshifts. Obvious solutions are a) that the merging events imply perturbed morphologies which prevent selecting them by our morphological classification filter, or b) that a dust-polluted ISM obscures the (either continuous or episodic) events of star-formation. We conclude that the likely solution is a combination thereof, i.e. a set of dust-enshrouded merging-driven starbursts occurring during the first few Gyrs of the galaxy's lifetime., Comment: 54 pages, Latex, 25 figures, to appear in "The Astrophysical Journal" October 20, 1998, Vol. 506 #2

We present the results of the detailed surface photometry of a sample of early-type galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field. Effective radii, surface brightnesses and total V_606 magnitudes have been obtained, as well as U_300, B_450, I_814, J, H and K colors, which are compared with the predictions of chemical-spectrophotometric models of population synthesis. Spectroscopic redshifts are available for 23 objects. For other 25 photometric redshifts are given. In the -r_e plane the early-type galaxies of the HDF, once the appropriate K+E corrections are applied, turn out to follow the `rest frame' Kormendy relation. This evidence, linked to the dynamical information gathered by Steidel et al.(1996), indicates that these galaxies, even at z~2-3, lie in the Fundamental Plane, in a virial equilibrium condition. At the same redshifts a statistically significant lack of large galaxies [i.e. with Log r_e(kpc) > 0.2] is observed., Comment: 30 pages, LaTeX with aasms4.sty macros, 9 embedded postscript figures + 1 postscript Table. The detailed surface photometry of a sample of early-type galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field is presented as part of a long-term project aimed to settle strong observational constraints to the theories modelling the evolution of elliptical galaxies from the early stages. The sample has been extracted, in the V_606 band, from the catalog by Couch (1996). The analysis of the luminosity and geometrical profiles, carried out on 162 candidates obeying our provisional selection criteria, resulted in a list of 99 'bona fide' early-type galaxies, for which accurate total magnitudes and effective radii were computed. The comparison with the magnitudes given by Williams et al.(1996) indicates that the automated photometry tends to underestimate the total luminosity of the ellipticals. The luminosity profiles of most of galaxies in our sample follow fairly well the deVaucouleurs law (`Normal' profiles). However, a relevant fraction of galaxies, even following the deVaucouleurs law in the main body light distribution, exhibit in the inner region a flattening of the luminosity profile not attributable to the PSF (`Flat' profiles) or, in some cases, a complex (multi-nucleus) structure (`Merger' profiles). The average ellipticity of galaxies belonging to the `Flat' and `Merger' classes is found to be significantly higher than that of the `Normal' galaxies. Moreover, even taken into account the relevant uncertainty of the outer position angle profiles, the amount of isophotal twisting of HDF ellipticals turns out to be significantly larger with respect to that of the local samples., Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX with laa.sty and psfig.sty macros + 28 embedded postscript figures. Galaxies, like plants, show a large variety of grafts: an individual of some type connects physically with a neighborhood of same or different type. The effects of these interactions between galaxies have a broad range of morphologies depending, among other quantities, on the distance of the closest approach between systems and the relative size of the two galaxies. A sketch of the possible situations is shown in tabular form. This botanical classification is just indicative, because the effects of interactions can be notable also at relatively large separations, when additional conditions are met, as for example low density of the interacting systems or the presence of intra-cluster gas. In spite of the large variety of encounters and effects, in the literature the same terms are often used to refer to different types of interactions. Analysis indicates that only few of the situations show evident signs of interaction. They appear to be most relevant when the size of the two galaxies is comparable. Bridges and tails, like the well known case of NGC 4038/39, the Antennae, are only observed for a very low percentage of all galaxies (approx. 0.38 percent, Arp and Madore 1977). In most cases of gravitational bond between two galaxies, the effects of interactions are not relevant or evident. For instance, the detection of stellar shells (Malin and Carter 1983), which have been attributed to the accretion of gas stripped from another galaxy or to the capture and disruption of a small stellar system (Quinn 1984), requires particular observing and reduction techniques. Besides these difficulties of detection, time plays an important role in erasing, within a massive galaxy, the effects of interactions with smaller objects. This can happen on a timescale shorter than the Hubble time, so the number of systems now showing signs of interaction suggests lower limits to the true frequency of interactions in the life-time of a stellar system.
