Hypervelocity stars (HVS) traverse the Galaxy from the central black hole to the outer halo. We show that the Galactic potential within 200 pc acts as a high pass filter preventing low velocity HVS from reaching the halo. To trace the orbits of HVS throughout the Galaxy, we construct two forms of the potential which reasonably represent the observations in the range 5--100,000 pc, a simple spherically symmetric model and a bulge-disk-halo model. We use the Hills mechanism (disruption of binaries by the tidal field of the central black hole) to inject HVS into the Galaxy and compute the observable spatial and velocity distributions of HVS with masses in the range 0.6--4 Msun. These distributions reflect the mass function in the Galactic Center, properties of binaries in the Galactic Center, and aspects of stellar evolution and the injection mechanism. For 0.6--4 Msun main sequence stars, the fraction of unbound HVS and the asymmetry of the velocity distribution for their bound counterparts increases with stellar mass. The density profiles for unbound HVS decline with distance from the Galactic Center approximately as r^{-2} (but are steeper for the most massive stars which evolve off the main sequence during their travel time from the Galactic Center); the density profiles for the bound ejecta decline with distance approximately as r^{-3}. The largest uncertainty for cosmological studies using clusters of galaxies is introduced by our limited knowledge of the statistics of galaxy cluster structure, and of the scaling relations between observables and cluster mass. To improve on this situation we have started an XMM-Newton Large Programme for the in-depth study of a representative sample of 33 galaxy clusters, selected in the redshift range z=0.055 to 0.183 from the REFLEX Cluster Survey, having X-ray luminosities above 0.4 X 10^44 h_70^-2 erg s^-1 in the 0.1 - 2.4 keV band. This paper introduces the sample, compiles properties of the clusters, and provides detailed information on the sample selection function. We describe the selection of a nearby galaxy cluster sample that makes optimal use of the XMM-Newton field-of-view, and provides nearly homogeneous X-ray luminosity coverage for the full range from poor clusters to the most massive objects in the Universe. For the clusters in the sample, X-ray fluxes are derived and compared to the previously obtained fluxes from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. We find that the fluxes and the flux errors have been reliably determined in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey analysis used for the REFLEX Survey. We use the sample selection function documented in detail in this paper to determine the X-ray luminosity function, and compare it with the luminosity function of the entire REFLEX sample. We also discuss morphological peculiarities of some of the sample members. We derive the first luminosity-metallicity relation for a large objectively selected sample of local galaxy pairs and we compare the pairs LZ relation with the relation for the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey (NFGS). Galaxy pair members with small projected separations (s<20 kpc/h) have systematically lower metallicities (~0.2 dex on average) than the field galaxies, or than more widely separated pairs at the same luminosity. There is a strong correlation between metallicity and central burst strength in the galaxy pairs. All five galaxies in the pairs sample with strong central bursts have close companions and metallicities lower than the comparable field galaxies. Our results provide strong observational evidence for a merger scenario where galaxy interactions cause gas flows towards the central regions, carrying less enriched gas from the outskirts of the galaxy into the central regions. The less enriched gas dilutes the pre-existing nuclear gas to produce a lower metallicity than would be obtained prior to the interaction. These gas flows trigger central bursts of star formation, causing strong central burst strengths, and possibly aiding the formation of blue bulges. We study the distribution of gas pressure and entropy in eight groups of galaxies belonging to the ROSAT All-Sky Survey / Center for Astrophysics Loose Systems (RASSCALS). We use archival and proprietary XMM-Newton observations, supplementing the X-ray data with redshifts derived from the literature; we also list 127 new redshifts measured with the Gemini North telescope. The groups show remarkable self-similarity in their azimuthally averaged entropy and temperature profiles. The entropy increases with radius; the behavior of the entropy profiles is consistent with an increasing broken power law with inner and outer slope 0.92+0.04-0.05 and 0.42+0.05-0.04 (68% confidence), respectively. There is no evidence of a central, isentropic core, and the entropy distribution in most of the groups is flatter at large radii than in the inner region, challenging earlier reports as well as theoretical models predicting large isentropic cores or asymptotic slopes of 1.1 at large radii. The pressure profiles are consistent with a self-similar decreasing broken power law in radius; the inner and outer slopes are -0.78+0.04-0.03 and -1.7+0.1-0.3, respectively. The results suggest that the larger scatter in the entropy distribution reflects the varied gasdynamical histories of the groups; the regularity and self-similarity of the pressure profiles is a sign of a similarity in the underlying dark matter distributions., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

(Abridged) We use 101 galaxies selected from the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey (NFGS) to investigate the effect of aperture size on the star formation rate, metallicity and reddening determinations for galaxies. We compare the star formation rate, metallicity and reddening derived from nuclear spectra to those derived from integrated spectra. For apertures capturing <20% of the B(26) light, the differences between nuclear and global metallicity, extinction and star formation rate are substantial. We calculate an `expected' star formation rate using our nuclear spectra and apply the commonly-used aperture correction method. The expected star formation rate overestimates the global value for early type spirals, with large scatter for all Hubble types, particularly late types. The differences between the expected and global star formation rates probably result from the assumption that the distributions of the emission-line gas and the continuum are identical. We discuss the implications of these results for metallicity-luminosity relations and star formation history studies based on fiber spectra. To reduce systematic and random errors from aperture effects, we recommend selecting samples with fibers that capture >20% of the galaxy light. For the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the 2dFGRS, redshifts z>0.04 and z>0.06 are required, respectively, to ensure a covering fraction >20% for galaxies similar to the average size, type, and luminosity observed in our sample. Higher luminosity samples and samples containing many late-type galaxies require a larger minimum redshift to ensure that >20% of the galaxy light is enclosed by the fiber., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. We use a sample of 55 groups and 6 clusters of galaxies ranging in mass from 7 x 10^11 Msun to 1.5 x 10^15 Msun to examine the correlation of the Ks-band luminosity with mass discovered by Lin et al. (2003). We use the 2MASS catalog and published redshifts to construct complete magnitude limited redshift surveys of the groups. From these surveys we explore the IR photometric properties of groups members including their IR color distribution and luminosity function. Although we find no significant difference between the group Ks luminosity function and the general field, there is a difference between the color distribution of luminous group members and their counterparts (generally background) in the field. There is a significant population of luminous galaxies with H-Ks > 0.35 which are rarely, if ever, members of the groups in our sample. The most luminous galaxies which populate the groups have a very narrow range of IR color. Over the entire mass range covered by our sample, the Ks luminosity increases with mass as L ~ M^(0.64 +/- 0.06) implying that the mass-to-light ratio in the Ks-band increases with mass. The agreement between this result and earlier investigations of essentially non-overlapping sets of systems shows that this window in galaxy formation and evolution is insensitive to the selection of the systems and to the details of the mass and luminosity computations., Comment: 38 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. CAIRNS (Cluster And Infall Region Nearby Survey) is a spectroscopic survey of the infall regions surrounding nine nearby rich clusters of galaxies. In Paper I, we used redshifts within $\sim 10\Mpc$ of the centers of the clusters to determine the mass profiles of the clusters based on the phase space distribution of the galaxies. Here, we use 2MASS photometry and an additional \ncziinew redshifts to investigate the environmental dependence of near-infrared mass-to-light ratios. In the virial regions, the halo occupation function is non-linear; the number of bright galaxies per halo increases more slowly than the mass of the halo. On larger scales, the light contained in galaxies is less clustered than the mass in rich clusters. Specifically, the mass-to-light ratio inside the virial radius is a factor of $1.8\pm0.3$ larger than that outside the virial radius. This difference could result from changing fractions of baryonic to total matter or from variations in the efficiency of galaxy formation or disruption with environment. The average mass-to-light ratio $M/L_K = 53\pm 5 h$ implies $\Omega_m = 0.18\pm 0.03$ (statistical) using the luminosity density based on 2dFGRS data. These results are difficult to reconcile with independent methods which suggest higher $\Omega_m$. We constrain the mass profile and orbital structure of nearby groups and clusters of galaxies. Our method yields the joint probability distribution of the density slope n, the velocity anisotropy beta, and the turnover radius r0 for these systems. The measurement technique does not use results from N-body simulations as priors. We incorporate 2419 new redshifts in the fields of 41 systems of galaxies with z < 0.04. The new groups have median velocity dispersion sigma=360 km/s. We also use 851 archived redshifts in the fields of 8 nearly relaxed clusters with z < 0.1. Within R < 2 r200, the data are consistent with a single power law matter density distribution with slope n = 1.8-2.2 for systems with sigma < 470 km/s, and n = 1.6-2.0 for those with sigma > 470 km/s (95% confidence). We show that a simple, scale-free phase space distribution function f(E,L^2) ~ (-E)^(alpha-1/2) L^(-2 \beta) is consistent with the data as long as the matter density has a cusp. Using this DF, matter density profiles with constant density cores (n=0) are ruled out with better than 99.7% confidence., Comment: 22 pages; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We use 2MASS photometry to select blue horizontal branch (BHB) candidates covering the sky |b|>15 deg. A 12.550 deg. We insert simulated star streams into the data and conclude that the high Galactic latitude BHB candidates are consistent with having no ~5 deg wide star stream with density greater than 0.33 objects deg^-2 at the 95% confidence level. The absence of structure suggests there have been no major accretion events in the inner halo in the last few Gyr. However, at low Galactic latitudes a two-point angular correlation analysis reveals structure on angular scales <1 deg. This structure is apparently associated with stars in the thick disk, and has a physical scale of 10-100 pc. Interestingly, such structures are expected by cosmological simulations that predict the majority of the thick disk may arise from accretion and disruption of satellite mergers., Comment: 11 pages, including figures. The CAIRNS (Cluster And Infall Region Nearby Survey) project is a spectroscopic survey of the infall regions surrounding eight nearby, rich, X-ray luminous clusters of galaxies. We collect 15665 redshifts (3471 new or remeasured) within \sim 5-10 Mpc of the centers of the clusters, making it the largest study of the infall regions of clusters. We determine cluster membership and the mass profiles of the clusters based on the phase space distribution of the galaxies. All of the clusters display decreasing velocity dispersion profiles. The mass profiles are fit well by functional forms based on numerical simulations but exclude an isothermal sphere. Specifically, NFW and Hernquist models provide good descriptions of cluster mass profiles to their turnaround radii. Our sample shows that the predicted infall pattern is ubiquitous in rich, X-ray luminous clusters over a large mass range. The caustic mass estimates are in excellent agreement with independent X-ray estimates at small radii and with virial estimates at intermediate radii. The mean ratio of the caustic mass to the X-ray mass is 1.03\pm0.11 and the mean ratio of the caustic mass to the virial mass (when corrected for the surface pressure term) is 0.93\pm0.07. The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project is a photometric and spectroscopic survey from which we select relatively blue stars (V-R<0.30 mag) as probes of the Milky Way halo. The Survey strip spans the range of Galactic latitude 35

We investigate the H-alpha and infrared star formation rate (SFR) diagnostics for galaxies in the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey (NFGS). For the 81 galaxies in our sample, we derive H-alpha fluxes (included here) from integrated spectra. There is a strong correlation between the ratio of far-infrared to optical luminosities L(FIR)/L(H-alpha) and the extinction E(B-V) measured with the Balmer decrement. Before reddening correction, the SFR(IR) and SFR(H-alpha) are related to each other by a power-law. Correction of the SFR(H-alpha) for extinction using the Balmer decrement and a classical reddening curve both reduces the scatter in the SFR(IR)-SFR(H-alpha) correlation and results in a much closer agreement (within ~10%) between the two SFR indicators. This SFR relationship spans 4 orders of magnitude and holds for all Hubble types with IRAS detections in the NFGS. A constant ratio between the SFR(IR) and SFR(H-alpha) for all Hubble types, including early types (S0-Sab), suggests that the IR emission in all of these objects results from a young stellar population., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Using a redshift survey of 1323 galaxies (1092 new or remeasured) in a region of 95 square degrees centered on the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2199, we analyze the supercluster containing A2199, A2197, and an X-ray group. The caustic technique accurately reproduces the true mass profiles of simulated simple superclusters (i.e., superclusters where the virial mass of one cluster is 2-10 times the virial mass of all other clusters in the supercluster). We calculate the masses of the two main components of A2197 (A2197W and A2197E) using archival X-ray observations and demonstrate that the A2199 supercluster is simple and thus that the caustic technique should yield an accurate mass profile. The mass profile is uncertain by ~30% within 3 Mpc/h and by a factor of two within 8 Mpc/h and is one of only a few for a supercluster on such large scales. Independent X-ray mass estimates agree with our results at all radii where they overlap. The mass profile strongly disagrees with an isothermal sphere profile but agrees with profiles suggested by simulations. We discuss the interplay of the supercluster dynamics and the dynamics of the bound subclusters. Using a redshift survey of 1779 galaxies and photometry from the 2-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) covering 200 square degrees, we calculate independent mass and light profiles for the infall region of the Coma cluster of galaxies. The redshift survey is complete to $K_s=12.2$ (622 galaxies), 1.2 magnitudes fainter than $M^*_{K_s}$ at the distance of Coma. We confirm the mass profile obtained by Geller, Diaferio, & Kurtz. The enclosed mass-to-light ratio measured in the $K_s$ band is approximately constant to a radius of $10 \Mpc$, where $M/L_{K_s}= 75\pm 23\mlsun$, in agreement with weak lensing results on similar scales. Within $2.5\Mpc$, X-ray estimates yield similar mass-to-light ratios (67$\pm32h$). The constant enclosed mass-to-light ratio with radius suggests that K-band light from bright galaxies in clusters traces the total mass on scales $\lesssim10 \Mpc$. Uncertainties in the mass profile imply that the mass-to-light ratio inside $r_{200}$ may be as much as a factor of 2.5 larger than that outside $r_{200}$. These data demonstrate that K-band light is not positively biased with respect to the mass; we cannot rule out antibias. These results imply $\Omega_m = 0.17 \pm 0.05$. The `Century Survey' strip covers 102 square degrees within the limits 8.5h \leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 16.5h, 29.0 degrees \leq \delta_{1950} \leq 30.0 degrees. The strip passes through the Corona Borealis supercluster and the outer region of the Coma cluster. Within the Century Survey region, we have measured 2410 redshifts which constitute four overlapping complete redshift surveys: (1) 1728 galaxies with Kron-Cousins R_{phot} \leq 16.13 covering the entire strip, (2) 507 galaxies with R_{phot} \leq 16.4 in the right ascension range 8h 32m \leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 10h 45m, (3) 1251 galaxies with absorption- and K-corrected R_{CCD, corr} \leq 16.2 covering the right ascension range 8.5h \leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 13.5h and (4) 1255 galaxies with absorption- and K-corrected V_{CCD, corr} \leq 16.7 also covering the right ascension range 8.5h \leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 13.5h. The 15R-North galaxy redshift survey is a uniform spectroscopic survey (S/N $\sim $10) covering the range 3650---7400\AA for 3149 galaxies with median redshift 0.05. The sample is 90% complete to $R=15.4$. The median slit covering fraction is 24% of the galaxy, apparently sufficient to minimize the effects of aperture bias on the EW(H$\alpha$). Forty-nine percent of the galaxes in the survey have one or more emission lines detected at $\geq 2 \sigma$. In agreement with previous surveys, the fraction of absorption-line galaxies increases steeply with galaxy luminosity. We use H$\beta$, O[III], H$\alpha$, and [N\II] to discriminate between star-forming galaxies and AGNs. We use the EW(H$\alpha$ + [N\II]) to estimate the Scalo birthrate parameter, $b$, the ratio of the current star formation rate to the time averaged star formation rate. Using a large redshift survey covering 95 square degrees, we demonstrate that the infall region of Abell 2199 contains Abell 2197, one or two X-ray emitting groups, and up to five additional groups identified in redshift surveys. Our survey shows that the X-ray emitting systems, located at projected radii of $1.^\circ4, 1.^\circ9$, and $5.^\circ1$ (2.2, 3.1, and $8.0 h^{-1}$Mpc), are connected kinematically to A2199. A2197 is itself an optically rich cluster; its weak X-ray emission suggests that it is much less massive than A2199. The absence of a sharp peak in the infall pattern at the position of A2197 supports this hypothesis. The outermost group is well outside the virial region of A2199 and it distorts the infall pattern in redshift space. The two X-ray emitting groups are roughly colinear, suggesting the existence of an extended ($8.0 h^{-1}$Mpc) filament. The identification of these infalling groups provides direct support of hierarchical structure formation; studies of these systems will provide insights into structure evolution. Groups in the infall regions of nearby clusters may offer a unique probe of the physics of the warm/hot ionized medium (WHIM) which is difficult to observe directly with current instruments., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, to appear in The Astrophysical Journal

We describe observations of the nearby cluster of galaxies A576 beyond the virial radius and into the infall region. Using 1057 redshifts, we use the infall pattern in redshift space to determine the mass profile of A576 to a radius of ~4 Mpc/h. This mass estimation technique makes no assumptions about the equilibrium state of the cluster. Within 1 Mpc/h, the mass profile we derive exceeds that determined from X-ray observations by a factor of 2.5. At \~2.5 Mpc/h, however, the mass profile agrees with virial mass estimates. Our mass profile is consistent with a NFW or Hernquist profile, but it is inconsistent with an isothermal sphere. R-band images of a $3^\circ x 3^\circ$ region centered on the cluster allow an independent determination of the cluster light profile. We calculate the integrated mass-to-light ratio as a function of cluster radius; it decreases smoothly from the core to ~4 Mpc/h. The differential dM/dL_R profile decreases more steeply; we find M/L_R ~100 h at ~4 Mpc/h, in good agreement with the mass-to-light ratios of individual galaxies. This value implies $\Omega_m \lesssim 0.4$ at 95% confidence. For a Hernquist model, the best-fit mass profiles differ from the observed surface number density of galaxies; the galaxies have a larger scale radius than the mass. This result is consistent with the centrally peaked $M/L_R$ profile. Similarly, the scale radius of the light profile is larger than that of the mass profile. We discuss some potential systematic effects; none can easily reconcile our results with a constant mass-to-light ratio. We describe the ROSAT All-Sky Survey-Center for Astrophysics Loose Systems (RASSCALS), the largest X-ray and optical survey of low mass galaxy groups to date. We draw 260 groups from the combined Center for Astrophysics and Southern Sky Redshift Surveys, covering one quarter of the sky to a limiting Zwicky magnitude of 15.5. We detect 61 groups (23%) as extended X-ray sources. The statistical completeness of the sample allows us to make the first measurement of the X-ray selection function of groups, along with a clean determination of their fundamental scaling laws. We find robust evidence of similarity breaking in the relationship between the X-ray luminosity and velocity dispersion. Groups with sigma < 340 km/s are overluminous by several orders of magnitude compared to the familiar LX ~ sigma^4 law for higher velocity dispersion systems. An understanding of this break depends on the detailed structure of groups with small velocity dispersions sigma < 150 km/s., Comment: 16 pages, including 6 figures. We assess the morphology-density relation, H-alpha linewidth-density relation, and the effects of nearby companions for 300 galaxies selected from low-density environments of the Center for Astrophysics Redshift Survey. Both the morphological mix and the EW(H-alpha) distribution of galaxies at modest underdensites are indistinguishable from our control sample at modest overdensities (early-type and absorption-line fractions both ~35%). At the lowest densities: the absorption-line fraction drops to 15%; more galaxies have active star formation; and there are more irregular and peculiar morphologies. Our magnitude-limited redshift survey of 250 fainter projected companions reveals that the void galaxies are no less likely to have a neighbor in redshift space. However, the typical velocity separation of close pairs drops sharply at densities below half the mean, from >200 km/s to ~100 km/s. The EW(H-alpha) distribution for galaxies lacking nearby companions varies little with density, while galaxies with nearby companions are much more likely to have strong current star formation (H-alpha linewidths >20 \AA) in the voids. These results and the luminosity- and color-density relations of this sample (astro-ph/9910073) suggest that the formation and evolution of field galaxies are only sensitive to large-scale underdensity below a threshold of roughly half the mean density. The differences in galaxy properties at the lower densities may be explained by: 1) a relative scarcity of the small-scale primordial density enhancements needed to form massive early-type/absorption- line galaxies; 2) more effective galaxy encounters due to the lower velocity dispersion on small scales; and 3) more gas and dust available for triggered star formation, presuming that luminous void galaxies formed more recently., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures; AJ in press (Jan. 2000); minor revisions from original submission

We study the optical properties of a large sample of galaxies in low-density regions of the nearby universe. We make a 5/h Mpc-smoothed map of the galaxy density throughout the Center for Astrophysics Redshift Survey (CfA2) to identify galaxies within three prominent nearby ``voids'' with diameter >30/h Mpc. We augment the CfA2 void galaxy sample with fainter galaxies found in the same regions from the deeper Century and 15R Redshift Surveys. We obtain B and R CCD images and high-S/N longslit spectra for the resulting sample of 149 void galaxies, and also for 131 galaxies on the periphery of these voids. Here we describe the photometry for the sample, including B isophotal magnitudes and B-R colors. For the 149 galaxies which lie in regions below the mean survey density, the luminosity functions in B and R are well-fit by Schechter functions with respective parameters (alpha_B = -0.5 +/- 0.3, B_* = -18.9 +/- 0.2) and (alpha_R = -0.9 +/- 0.3, R_* = -20.4 +/- 0.3). The B luminosity function (LF) is consistent with typical survey LFs (e.g., the Southern Sky Redshift Survey), and the R LF is consistent with the Century Survey. The B and R LFs of 131 galaxies in the ``void periphery'', regions between the mean density and twice the mean, have similar Schechter parameters. The CfA2 LF is inconsistent with both samples at 3.5-sigma. When we narrow our analysis to the 46 galaxies in regions below half the mean density, the LF is steeper: alpha = -1.4 +/- 0.5. The typical survey LFs are inconsistent with this subsample at 2-sigma. The B-R color distribution of galaxies in the lowest-density regions is also shifted significantly (3-sigma) blue-ward of the higher density samples. We have measured 492 redshifts (311 new) in the direction of the poor cluster AWM~7 and have identified 179 cluster members (73 new). We use two independent methods to derive a self-consistent mass profile, under the assumptions that the absorption-line galaxies are virialized and that they trace an underlying Navarro, Frenk & White (1997) dark matter profile: (1) we fit such an NFW profile to the radial distribution of galaxy positions and to the velocity dispersion profile; (2) we apply the virial mass estimator to the cluster. With these assumptions, the two independent mass estimates agree to \sim 15% within 1.7 h^{-1} Mpc, the radial extent of our data; we find an enclosed mass \sim (3+-0.5)\times 10^{14} h^{-1} M_\odot. The largest potential source of systematic error is the inclusion of young emission-line galaxies in the mass estimate. We investigate the behavior of the surface term correction to the virial mass estimator under several assumptions about the velocity anisotropy profile, still within the context of the NFW model, and remark on the sensitivity of derived mass profiles to outliers. We use a new redshift survey complete to m_R=15.4 within 4.25 deg from the center of the Coma cluster to measure the mass profile of the cluster to r=5.5 Mpc/h. We extend the profile to r=10 Mpc/h with a further sample complete to m_R=15.4 in 42% of the area within a 10 deg radius and to m_{Zw}=15.5 in the remaining area. Galaxies within this region are falling onto the cluster on moderately radial orbits and thus do not satisfy virial equilibrium. Nonetheless, identification of the caustics in redshift space provides an estimate of the gravitational potential at radius r and hence of the system mass, M(<10 Mpc/h)=(1.65+-0.41)10^{15} M_\odot/h (1-sigma error). Previous mass estimates derived from optical and X-ray observations are limited to r<2.5 Mpc/h. Our mass profile is consistent with these estimates but extends to distances four times as large. We assemble and observe a sample of poor galaxy systems that is suitable for testing N-body simulations of hierarchical clustering (Navarro, Frenk, & White 1997; NFW) and other dynamical halo models (e.g., Hernquist 1990). We (1) determine the parameters of the density profile rho(r) and the velocity dispersion profile sigma(R), (2) separate emission-line galaxies from absorption-line galaxies, examining the model parameters and as a function of spectroscopic type, and (3) for the best-behaved subsample, constrain the velocity anisotropy parameter, beta, which determines the shapes of the galaxy orbits. The NFW universal profile and the Hernquist (1990) model both provide good descriptions of the spatial data. In most cases an isothermal sphere is ruled out. Systems with declining sigma(R) are well-matched by theoretical profiles in which the star-forming galaxies have predominantly radial orbits (beta > 0); many of these galaxies are probably falling in for the first time. Redshift Survey Compact Groups (RSCGs) are tight knots of N >= 3 galaxies selected from the CfA2+SSRS2 redshift survey. The selection is based on physical extent and association in redshift space alone. We measured 300 new redshifts of fainter galaxies within 1 h^{-1} Mpc of 14 RSCGs to explore the relationship between RSCGs and their environments. 13 of 14 RSCGs are embedded in overdense regions of redshift space. The systems range from a loose group of 5 members to an Abell cluster. The remaining group, RSCG 64, appears isolated. RSCGs are isolated and distinct from their surroundings to varying degrees, as are the Hickson Compact Groups. We investigate the dependence of the local galaxy luminosity function on morphology using 5,404 galaxies from the recently enlarged Second Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS2). Over the range -22 \le M_B \le -14 ($H_0 = 100 km/s/Mpc), the luminosity function of early-type galaxies is well fitted by a Schechter function with parameters M_*=-19.37^{+0.10}_{-0.11}, alpha=-1.00^{+0.09}_{-0.09} and phi_*=0.0044 +/- 0.0008 Mpc^{-3}. The spiral luminosity function is very similar and is well fitted by the parameters M_*=-19.43^{+0.08}_{-0.08}, alpha=-1.11^{+0.07}_{-0.06} and phi_*=0.0080 +/- 0.0014 Mpc^{-3} over the same range in absolute magnitude. The flat faint end of the early-type luminosity function is consistent with earlier measurements from the CfA Redshift Survey (Marzke et al. 1994) but is significantly steeper than the slope measured in the Stromlo-APM survey (Loveday et al. 1992). Combined with the increased normalization of the overall LF measured from intermediate redshift surveys, the flat faint-end slope of the E/S0 LF produces no-evolution models which reproduce the deep HST counts of early-type galaxies remarkably well. However, the observed normalization of the SSRS2 LF is consistent with the low value measured in other local redshift surveys. The cause of this low-redshift anomaly remains unknown. The luminosity function of irregular and peculiar galaxies in the SSRS2 is very steep: M_*=-19.78^{+0.40}_{-0.50}, alpha=-1.81^{+0.24}_{-0.24} and phi_*=0.0002 +/- 0.00008 Mpc^{-3}. The steep slope is consistent with the LFs measured for Sm-Im galaxies in the CfA survey, UV-selected galaxies (Treyer et al. 1997), star-forming field galaxies (Bromley et al. 1997) and the bluest galaxies in the SSRS2 (Marzke & da Costa 1997)., Comment: 35 pages + 9 figures + 4 tables. We report redshifts, magnitudes and morphological classifications for 5369 galaxies with $m_B \leq 15.5$ and 57 galaxies fainter than this limit, in two regions covering a total of 1.70 steradians in the southern celestial hemisphere. The galaxy catalog is drawn primarily from the list of non-stellar objects identified in the Guide Star Catalog (Lasker et al. 1990, AJ 99, 2019; hereafter GSC). The galaxies have positions accurate to about 1 arc sec and magnitudes with an rms scatter of about 0.3 mag. We compute magnitudes ($m_{SSRS2}$) from the relation between instrumental GSC magnitudes and the photometry by Lauberts & Valentijn (1989). From a comparison with CCD photometry, we find that our system is homogeneous across the sky and corresponds to magnitudes measured at the isophotal level $\sim$ 26 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. The precision of the radial velocities is of \sim 40 km/s and the redshift survey is more than 99% complete to the $m_{SSRS2}$ = 15.5 magnitude limit. This sample is in the direction opposite to the CfA2; in combination the two surveys provide an important database for studies of the properties of galaxies and their large-scale distribution in the nearby Universe., Comment: 20 pages, uses AASTeX 4.0 macros. We use 189 new radial velocities, an $R$ band CCD mosiac, archival X-ray images, and gas temperatures to study substructure, masses, luminosity functions, and mass-to-light ratios in A2626 and A2440. The symmetric X-ray emission from A2626 suggests a relaxed, single-component system; however, 159 redshifts reveals a complex, three component cluster at cz~17,500km/s. One components is a typical X-ray bright cluster, a second has a cluster-like galaxy population with lower central galaxy and gas density, and the third is a background structure with field galaxy composition. A comparison of the magnitude distributions within the two subclusters suggests that A2626 is a merger in progress. Virial masses and a composite luminosity function for a region with projected radius r=1.5h^{-1}Mpc yield a mass to light ratio M/L_R~610h. Analysis of the X-ray emission from the primary component yields a gas mass fraction of 2.2h^{-3/2}% and a baryon fraction of 3.4%. A radial infall model implies that the virial mass may be an underestimate. In A2440, deep CCD $R$ band photometry indicates a striking correspondence between the galaxy and gas distributions. The galaxy distribution has three main components, each associated with a giant elliptical galaxy. The two larger peaks in the galaxy distribution coincide with the primary peaks in the X-ray emission, and the third is associated with a significant X-ray surface brightness enhancement. We use this galaxy-gas correspondence and 48 redshifts to argue that the subclusters are bound within a single system, and that the two primary components are beginning to merge. We analyze the galaxy population and dynamics of the galaxy cluster Abell 576 using 281 redshifts (230 new), R band CCD galaxy photometry over a 2h^{-1} Mpc by 2h^{-1} Mpc region centered on the cluster, an Einstein IPC image, and an Einstein MPC spectrum. The cluster galaxies with emission lines in their spectra have a larger velocity dispersion and are significantly less clustered on this 2h^{-1} Mpc scale than galaxies without emission lines. We show that excluding the emission line galaxies decreases the velocity dispersion by 18% and the virial mass estimate by a factor of two. The central cluster region contains a non--emission galaxy population and an intracluster medium which are significantly cooler (sigma_{core}=387^{+250}_{-105}~km/s and T_X=1.6^{+0.4}_{-0.3}~keV at 90\% confidence) than the global populations (sigma=977^{+124}_{-96}~km/s for the non--emission population and T_X>4~keV at 90% confidence). Because (1) the low dispersion population is no more luminous than the global population and (2) the evidence for a cooling flow is weak, we suggest that the cluster core may contain the remnants of a lower mass subcluster. We examine the cluster mass, baryon fraction and luminosity function. The cluster virial mass varies significantly depending on the galaxy sample used. Consistency between the hydrostatic and virial estimators can be achieved if (1) the gas temperature at r\sim1h^{-1}~Mpc is T_X\sim8keV (the best fit value) and (2) several velocity outliers are excluded from the virial calculation. Although the best fit Schechter function parameters and the ratio of galaxy to gas mass are typical of other clusters, the baryon fraction is relatively low. Using a lower limit to the binding mass, we show that the gas mass fraction is \le3h^{-3/2}% and the baryon fraction is \le6%., Comment: 34 pages postscript, accepted for publication in ApJ

(compressed version) We combine the CfA Redshift Survey (CfA2) and the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS2) to estimate the pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies $\sig12$ on a scale of $\sim 1 \hmpc$. Both surveys are complete to an apparent magnitude limit $B(0)=15.5$. Our sample includes 12,812 galaxies distributed in a volume $1.8 \times 10^6 \hmpc3$. We conclude: 1) The pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies in the combined CfA2+SSRS2 redshift survey is $\sig12=540 \kms \pm 180 \kms$. Both the estimate and the variance of $\sig12$ significantly exceed the canonical values $\sig12=340 \pm40$ measured by Davis \& Peebles (1983) using CfA1. 2) We derive the uncertainty in $\sig12$ from the variation among subsamples with volumes on the order of $7 \times 10^5$ \hmpc3. This variation is nearly an order of magnitude larger than the formal error, 36 $\kms$, derived using least-squares fits to the CfA2+SSRS2 correlation function. This variation among samples is consistent with the conclusions of Mo \etal (1993) for a number of smaller surveys and with the analysis of CfA1 by Zurek \etal (1994). 3) When we remove Abell clusters with $R\ge1$ from our sample, the pairwise velocity dispersion of the remaining galaxies drops to $295 \pm 99 \kms$. Thus the dominant source of variance in $\sig12$ is the shot noise contributed by dense virialized systems. 4) The distribution of pairwise velocities is consistent with an isotropic exponential with velocity dispersion independent of scale., Comment: 61 pages uuencoded, compressed postscript in 5 pieces. We use a representative sample of 65 galaxy clusters observed with the Einstein IPC to constrain the range of cluster X-ray morphologies. We develop and apply quantitative and reproducible measures to constrain the intrinsic distributions of emission weighted centroid variation, axial ratio, orientation, and the radial fall--off. We then use the range of cluster X--ray morphologies to constrain three generic cosmological models (Omega=1, Omega_0=0.2, and Omega_0=0.2 & lambda_0=0.8). For each of these models, we evolve eight sets of Gaussian random initial conditions consistent with an effective power spectrum $P(k)\propto k^{-1}$ on cluster scales. Using this sample of 24 numerical cluster simulations, we compare the X--ray morphologies of the observed and simulated clusters. The comparisons indicate that: (i) cluster centroid variations, axial ratios, and radial fall-offs are sensitive to the underlying cosmological model, and (ii) galaxy clusters with the observed range of X--ray morphologies are very unlikely in low Omega_0 cosmologies. The analysis favors the Omega=1 model, though some discrepancies remain. We compute the power spectrum of galaxy density fluctuations in a recently completed redshift survey of optically-selected galaxies in the southern hemisphere (SSRS2). The amplitude and shape of the SSRS2 power spectrum are consistent with results of the Center for Astrophysics redshift survey of the northern hemisphere (CfA2), including the abrupt change of slope on a scale of 30-50Mpc/h; these results are reproducible for independent volumes of space and variations are consistent with the errors estimated from mock surveys. Taken together, the SSRS2 and CfA2 form a complete sample of 14,383 galaxies which covers one-third of the sky. The power spectrum of this larger sample continues to rise on scales up to ~ 200Mpc/h, with weak evidence for flattening on the largest scales. The combined laboratory and solar analysis of the highly-excited subconfigurations 4f and 5g of Fe I has allowed us to classify 87 lines of the 4f-5g supermultiplet in the spectral region 2545-2585 cm-1. The level structure of these JK-coupled configurations is predicted by semiempirical calculations and the quadrupolic approximation. Semiempirical gf-values have been calculated and are compared to gf values derived from the solar spectrum. The solar analysis has shown that these lines, which should be much less sensitive than lower excitation lines to departures from LTE and to temperature uncertainties, lead to a solar abundance of iron which is consistent with the meteoritic value (A_Fe = 7.51)., Comment: ApJ (in press). 14 pages. We examine the relationship between the group x-ray luminosity in the 0.3-3.5 keV band and the measured velocity dispersion, and galaxy surface number density. We find definite correlations. Richer groups follow the same relation as rich clusters (cf. Quintana & Melnick 1982) with $L_x \propto \sigma^{4.0\pm 0.6}$, but the relation flattens for lower luminosity systems which have velocity dispersions below 300 km/s). We suggest that the $L_x-\sigma$ relation arises from a combination of extended cluster emission and emission associated with individual galaxies. The x-ray emission for the richer groups is dominated by emission from the intra-group medium, as for the richer clusters; emission from the poorer clusters is dominated by less extended emission associated with the individual group galaxies. We use the CfA Reshift Survey of galaxies with m(sub z) less than or equal to 15.5 to calculate the galaxy luminosity function over the range -13 less than or equal to M(sub z) less than or equal to -22. The sample includes 9063 galaxies distributed over 2.1 sr. For galaxies with velocities cz greater or equal to 2500 km per sec, where the effects of peculiar velocities are small, the luminosity function is well represented by a Schechter function with parameters phi(sub star) = 0.04 +/- 0.01 per cu Mpc, M(sub star) = -18.8 +/- 0.3, and alpha = -1.0 +/- 0.2. When we include all galaxies with cz greater or equal to 500 km per sec, the number of galaxies in the range -16 less than or equal to M(sub z) less than or equal to -13 exceeds the extrapolation of the Schechter function by a factor of 3.1 +/- 0.5. This faint-end excess is not caused by the local peculiar velocity field but may be partially explained by small scale errors in the Zwicky magnitudes. Even with a scale error as large as 0.2 mag per mag, which is unlikely, the excess is still a factor of 1.8 +/- 0.3. If real, this excess affects the interpretation of deep counts of field galaxies.

We discuss a magnitude-limited redshift survey covering a region around the south Galactic pole (SSRS2). The survey includes 3592 galaxies and covers a region of 1.13 sr to a limiting m(sub B(0)) = 15.5, directly comparable to CfA2. Together, CfA2 and SSR2 cover more than a third of the sky. The northern and southern surveys are remarkably similar. Both contain voids with diameters as large as 5000 km/s. The southern survey contains the Southern Wall, similar to the northern Great Wall. The distributions of velocity dispersions for systems extracted from the SSRS2 and CfA2 surveys are also remarkably similar. For the SSRS2, an inhomogeneity-independent technique yields Schechter luminosity function parameters M(sup *) = -19.50 and alpha = -1.20 (H(sub O) = 100 h km/s/Mpc, h = 1 unless otherwise specified). The steep faint-end slope is probably attributable to bluer galaxies. By examining the normalized density fluctuations in the SSRS2 and CfA2 surveys, we suggest that the combined sample is not yet large enough to be 'fair.' There are large fluctuations in shells at 10,000 km/s.

Using a method for constraining the dynamical state of a galaxy cluster by examining the moments of its x-ray surface brightness distribution, we determine the statistics of cluster substructure for a sample of 40 Abell clusters. Using x-ray observations from the Einstein Observatory Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC), we measure the first moment M1(r), the ellipsoidal orientation angle theta2(r), and the axial ratio eta(r) at several different radii in the cluster. We determine the effects of systematics such as x-ray point source emission, telescope vignetting, Poisson noise, and characteristics of the IPC by measuring the same parameters on an ensemble of simulated cluster images. Due to the small band-pass of the IPC, the ICM emissivity is nearly independent of temperature so the intensity at each point in the IPC images is simply proportional to the emission measure calculated along the line of sight through the cluster (e.g. Fabricant et al. 1980). Therefore, barring a change superposition of two x-ray emitting clusters, a significant variation in the image centroid M1(r) as a function of radius indicates that the center of mass of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) varies with radius. We argue that such a configuration (essentially an m = 1 component in the ICM density distribution) is a non-equilibrium component; it results from an off-center subclump or a recent merger in the ICM.

We report preliminary results from a program to identify optical counterparts of ROSAT sources in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) region. The most striking X-ray feature reported by Hasinger et al. (1991) is an extended low surface brightness region of X-ray emission. Within the two X-ray contours of highest count rate we find a cluster of galaxies at a redshift of 0.09 and an early-type galaxy at a redshift of 0.03. X-ray emission from these objects may provide an explanation for the observed X-ray morphology. We also find evidence that other X-ray sources in this region are coincident with clusters or groups of galaxies at redshifts between 0.08 and 0.09. The presence of at least five X-ray detected clusters or groups in this narrow redshift band within a 1.5 deg radius field seems to indicate the existence of a moderate redshift supercluster. The existence of these clusters will have major implications for the study of large-scale structure through X-ray surveys such as ROSAT.

These decades are the first in which we can begin to map the universe. Recent surveys reveal patterns in the distribution of galaxies -- patterns coherent on scales of 150 million light years or more. These patterns contrast with the smoothness of the radiation background measured by the COBE satellite. Together these observations challenge our understanding of the origin of galaxies and large-scale structure in the universe. 'Visualizing the universe' is crucial for exploring the 3-dimensional maps, for analyzing them, for comparing the data with simulations, for designing instruments to make deeper maps with new large telescopes, and for sharing the excitement of discovery with the public.

Redshifts were measured for 93 of the 94 galaxies in the Zwicky-Nilson merged catalog with the value of m(B/01) between 15.5 and 15.7 and with right ascension alpha between 8(h) and 17(h) and declination delta between 29 and 30 deg. This region is within the one covered by the first slice of the CfA (Center for Astrophysics) survey. The galaxies reinforce features already visible in the earlier survey.

New measurements for 160 redshifts and previous measurements for 108 other redshifts are presented for galaxies within 5 deg of A194. The galaxy distribution in A194 is shown to be inconsistent with a spherically symmetric King model. A mass-to-light ratio is derived using the virial theorem which is lower than the mean for the groups in the CfA redshift survey (Huchra and Geller, 1982; Geller, 1984). A nonparametric test for galaxy-cluster alignment and a Chi-squared test are used to search for alignment of galaxy major axes with the axis of A194. Evidence for neither luminosity segregation nor significant differences in the velocity or surface distributions of galaxies as a function of morphological type is found.

The dynamics of the Corona Borealis (Cor Bor) supercluster was studied on a sample of 1555 galaxies in the vicinity of the six Abell clusters (A2061, A2065, A2067, A2079, A2089, and A2092) which comprise the supercluster. For all galaxies in this sample, photographic R photometry and accurate positional data are available. New R photometry and/or new redshifts were obtained for 97 galaxies, bringing the number of galaxies in this system for which the redshifts are available to 182. The central cluster R band luminosity, X-ray luminosity, and surface density were correlated with the cluster velocity dispersion and virial mass. The amount of matter in the supercluster, estimated to be about 8.2 x 10 to the 15th solar masses, is considered to be sufficient to bind the six Cor Bor clusters, which are contained within a volume of about 13 Mpc in radius. Dynamical time scales are comparable with the Hubble time, making it unlikely that the system is virialized.

Redshifts have been measured for galaxies in two of the 'linear' clusters of the sample of Adams, Strom, and Strom (1980), including 44 redshifts in A999 and 40 in A1016. From the data, it is concluded that the galaxies in A999 are probably drawn from a spherically symmetric distribution, while those in A1016 probably are not. Both A999 and A1016 have mass-to-light ratios lower than typical of other clusters. The effect of anisotropy on the determination of cluster masses from the virial theorem is examined, and it is found that if the shortest axes of these clusters are close to the line of sight, the mass-to-light ratio may be underestimated by about 50 percent. No significant evidence is found for alignments of individual cluster members with the cluster axis in the convincing linear cluster A1016. There is similarly no evidence of segregation by luminosity morphological type in A1016.

The present redshift survey of the Corona Borealis region encompasses redshifts, magnitudes and positions for 83 galaxies covering a 16.4 sq deg region; a complementary survey covers 39.2 sq deg, is complete to m(B)0 of 15.5, and encompasses 37 galaxies. The combined survey furnishes further support for the 'bubble-like' geometry revealed by the shallower CfA survey. The redshift distribution obtained is noted to be very similar to that in the neighboring Bootes region. The structure of voids and surfaces in the galaxy distribution is insensitive to luminosity for M(B)0 of less than about -17.4.

X-ray and optical data for A754 are used to study the relative distribution of the luminous and dark matter in this dense, rich cluster of galaxies with X-ray luminosity comparable to that of the Coma Cluster. A quantitative statistical comparison is made of the galaxy positions with the total mass responsible for maintaining the X-ray emitting gas in hydrostatic equilibrium. A simple bimodal model which fits both the X-ray and optical data suggests that the galaxies are distributed consistently with the projected matter distribution within the region covered by the X-ray map (0.5-1 Mpc). The X-ray and optical estimates of the mass in the central region of the cluster are 2.9 x 10 to the 14th and 3.6 + or - 0.5 x 10 to the 14th solar masses, respectively.

The clustering properties of the Abell and Zwicky cluster catalogs are studied using the two-point angular and spatial correlation functions. The catalogs are divided into eight subsamples to determine the dependence of the correlation function on distance, richness, and the method of cluster identification. It is found that the Corona Borealis supercluster contributes significant power to the spatial correlation function to the Abell cluster sample with distance class of four or less. The distance-limited catalog of 152 Abell clusters, which is not greatly affected by a single system, has a spatial correlation function consistent with the power law Xi(r) = 300r exp -1.8. In both the distance class four or less and distance-limited samples the signal in the spatial correlation function is a power law detectable out to 60/h Mpc. The amplitude of Xi(r) for clusters of richness class two is about three times that for richness class one clusters. The two-point spatial correlation function is sensitive to the use of estimated redshifts.

A preliminary discussion is presented of recent results obtained as part of the extension of the Center of Astrophysics redshift survey. Several features of the results are striking. The distribution of galaxies in the sample, which contains 1100 galaxies in a 6 deg x 117 deg strip going through the Coma cluster, looks like a slice through the suds in the kitchen sink. It appears that the galaxies are on the surfaces of bubble-like structures with diameters of 25-50/h-Mpc. The largest bubble in the survey has a diameter comparable with the most recent estimates of the diameter of the void in Bootes. This topology poses serious challenges for current models for the formation of large-scale structure. The best available model for generating these structures is the explosive galaxy formation theory of Ostriker and Cowie (1981).

Data related to the large-scale galaxy distribution are discussed. The galaxy counts of Shane-Wirtanen (1967) are analyzed; the effects of residual systematic errors on the galaxy distribution measurements are considered. The analysis reveals that the Shane-Wirtanen data are not applicable to the study of large-scale structure. A model which is capable of measuring galaxy correlation functions on scales greater than about 10 Mpc is evaluated.

X-ray and optical observations of the cluster of galaxies Abell 744 are presented. The X-ray flux (assuming H(0) = 100 km/s per Mpc) is about 9 x 10 to the 42nd erg/s. The X-ray source is extended, but shows no other structure. Photographic photometry (in Kron-Cousins R), calibrated by deep CCD frames, is presented for all galaxies brighter than 19th magnitude within 0.75 Mpc of the cluster center. The luminosity function is normal, and the isopleths show little evidence of substructure near the cluster center. The cluster has a dominant central galaxy, which is classified as a normal brightest-cluster elliptical on the basis of its luminosity profile. New redshifts were obtained for 26 galaxies in the vicinity of the cluster center; 20 appear to be cluster members. The spatial distribution of redshifts is peculiar; the dispersion within the 150 kpc core radius is much greater than outside. Abell 744 is similar to the nearby cluster Abell 1060.

The Hubble diagram for the 561 Abell clusters with measured redshifts has been examined using Abell's (1958) corrected photo-red magnitudes for the tenth-ranked cluster member (m10). After correction for the Scott effect and K dimming, the data are in good agreement with a linear magnitude-redshift relation with a slope of 0.2 out to z = 0.1. New redshift data are also presented for 20 Abell clusters. Abell's m10 is suitable for redshift estimation for clusters with m10 of no more than 16.5. At fainter m10, the number of foreground galaxies expected within an Abell radius is large enough to make identification of the tenth-ranked galaxy difficult. Interlopers bias the estimated redshift toward low values at high redshift. Leir and van den Bergh's (1977) redshift estimates suffer from this same bias but to a smaller degree because of the use of multiple cluster parameters. Constraints on deviations of cluster velocities from the mean cosmological flow require greater photometric accuracy than is provided by Abell's m10 magnitudes.
