Search

Short supersoft X-ray source (SSS) states (durations < 100 days) of classical novae (CNe) indicate massive white dwarfs that are candidate progenitors of supernovae type Ia. We carry out a dedicated optical and X-ray monitoring program of CNe in the bulge of M 31. We discovered M31N 2007-11a and determined its optical and X-ray light curve. We used the robotic Super-LOTIS telescope to obtain the optical data and XMM-Newton and Chandra observations to discover an X-ray counterpart to that nova. Nova M31N 2007-11a is a very fast CN, exhibiting a very short SSS state with an appearance time of 6-16 days after outburst and a turn-off time of 45-58 days after outburst. Classical novae (CNe) have been found to represent the major class of supersoft X-ray sources (SSS) in our neighbour galaxy M 31. We determine properties and evolution of the two first SSSs ever discovered in the M 31 globular cluster (GC) system. We have used XMM-Newton, Chandra and Swift observations of the centre region of M 31 to discover both SSS and to determine their X-ray light curves and spectra. We performed detailed analysis of XMM-Newton EPIC PN spectra of the source in Bol 111 (SS1) using blackbody and NLTE white dwarf (WD) atmosphere models. For the SSS in Bol 194 (SS2) we used optical monitoring data to search for an optical counterpart. Both GC X-ray sources were classified as SSS. We identify SS1 with the CN M31N 2007-06b recently discovered in the M 31 GC Bol 111. For SS2 we did not find evidence for a recent nova outburst and can only provide useful constraints on the time of the outburst of a hypothetical nova. The only known CN in a M 31 GC can be identified with the first SSS found in a M31 GC. POET (Polarimeters for Energetic Transients) is a Small Explorer mission concept proposed to NASA in January 2008. The principal scientific goal of POET is to measure GRB polarization between 2 and 500 keV. The payload consists of two wide FoV instruments: a Low Energy Polarimeter (LEP) capable of polarization measurements in the energy range from 2-15 keV and a high energy polarimeter (Gamma-Ray Polarimeter Experiment -- GRAPE) that will measure polarization in the 60-500 keV energy range. Spectra will be measured from 2 keV up to 1 MeV. The POET spacecraft provides a zenith-pointed platform for maximizing the exposure to deep space. Spacecraft rotation will provide a means of effectively dealing with systematics in the polarization response. POET will provide sufficient sensitivity and sky coverage to measure statistically significant polarization for up to 100 GRBs in a two-year mission. Polarization data will also be obtained for solar flares, pulsars and other sources of astronomical interest.

We report on the detection by Swift of GRB 080913, and subsequent optical/near-infrared follow-up observations by GROND which led to the discovery of its optical/NIR afterglow and the recognition of its high-z nature via the detection of a spectral break between the i' and z' bands. Spectroscopy obtained at the ESO-VLT revealed a continuum extending down to lambda = 9400 A, and zero flux for 7500 A < lambda<9400 A, which we interpret as the onset of a Gunn-Peterson trough at z=6.695+-0.025 (95.5% conf. level), making GRB 080913 the highest redshift GRB to date, and more distant than the highest-redshift QSO. We note that many redshift indicators which are based on promptly available burst or afterglow properties have failed for GRB 080913. We report on our follow-up campaign and compare the properties of GRB 080913 with bursts at lower redshift. In particular, since the afterglow of this burst is fainter than typical for GRBs, we show that 2m-class telescopes can identify most high-redshift GRBs., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, ApJ (subm)

Nonthermal radiation observed from astrophysical systems containing relativistic jets and shocks, e.g., gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and microquasars commonly exhibit power-law emission spectra. Recent PIC simulations of relativistic electron-ion (or electron-positron) jets injected into a stationary medium show that particle acceleration occurs within the downstream jet. In collisionless, relativistic shocks, particle (electron, positron, and ion) acceleration is due to plasma waves and their associated instabilities (e.g., the Weibel (filamentation) instability) created in the shock region. The simulations show that the Weibel instability is responsible for generating and amplifying highly non-uniform, small-scale magnetic fields. These fields contribute to the electron's transverse deflection behind the jet head. The resulting "jitter" radiation from deflected electrons has different properties compared to synchrotron radiation, which assumes a uniform magnetic field. Aims: The AGILE gamma-ray burst GRB 080514B is the first burst with detected emission above 30 MeV and an optical afterglow. However, no spectroscopic redshift for this burst is known. Methods: We compiled ground-based photometric optical/NIR and millimeter data from several observatories, including the multi-channel imager GROND, as well as ultraviolet \swift UVOT and X-ray XRT observations. The spectral energy distribution of the optical/NIR afterglow shows a sharp drop in the \swift UVOT UV filters that can be utilized for the estimation of a redshift. Results: Fitting the SED from the \swift UVOT $uvw2$ band to the $H$ band, we estimate a photometric redshift of $z=1.8^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$, consistent with the pseudo redshift reported by Pelangeon & Atteia (2008) based on the gamma-ray data. Conclusions: The afterglow properties of GRB 080514B do not differ from those exhibited by the global sample of long bursts, supporting the view that afterglow properties are basically independent of prompt emission properties., Comment: submitted to A&A letters

The purpose of this study is to find transient X-ray sources in M31, and to investigate and classify their nature. Three X-ray transients were observed with Swift. For each of the three X-ray transients we use the Swift X-ray and optical data together with observations from XMM-Newton and Chandra to investigate the lightcurves and the spectra of the outburst, and thereby to identify the source types. The outburst of XMMU J004215.8+411924 lasted for about one month. The source had a hard power-law spectrum with a photon index of 1.6. It was previously identified as a Be/X-ray binary based on the optical identification with a star. However, we show that with improved source coordinates it is clear that the optical source is not the counterpart to the X-ray source. The source SWIFT J004217.3+411532 had a bright outburst, after which it slowly decayed over half a year. The spectrum was soft, corresponding to a thermal accretion disk with innermost temperature of 250-600 eV. The source was not seen in the optical, and the soft spectrum indicates that the source is most likely a black hole low mass X-ray binary. M31N 2006-11a is a nova that was previously observed in the optical. We detected it both in X-rays and UV with Swift half a year after the optical maximum, after which it decayed below the Swift detection threshold within a month. The spectrum of the X-ray transient can be modelled by a black-body with a temperature of 50 eV. We use catalogues of X-ray transients in M31 to estimate their rate, and we find a lower limit of 9/yr., Comment: 5 pages, to appear in A&A

The neutrino-nucleus reaction cross sections of 4He and 12C are evaluated using new shell model Hamiltonians. Branching ratios of various decay channels are calculated to evaluate the yields of Li, Be, and B produced through the nu-process in supernova explosions. The new cross sections enhance the yields of 7Li and 11B produced during the supernova explosion of a 16.2 M_odot star model compared to the case using the conventional cross sections by about 10%. On the other hand, the yield of 10B decreases by a factor of two. The yields of 6Li, 9Be, and the radioactive nucleus 10Be are found at a level of 10^{-11} M_odot. The temperature of nu_{mu,tau}- and bar{nu}_{mu,tau}-neutrinos inferred from the supernova contribution of 11B in Galactic chemical evolution models is constrained to the 4.3-6.5 MeV range. We present a detailed study of the prompt and afterglow emission from Swift GRB 061126 using BAT, XRT, UVOT data and multi-color optical imaging from ten ground-based telescopes. GRB 061126 was a long burst (T_90=191 s) with four overlapping peaks in its gamma-ray light curve. The X-ray afterglow, observed from 26 min to 20 days after the burst, shows a simple power-law decay with alpha_X=1.290 \pm 0.008. Optical observations presented here cover the time range from 258 s (Faulkes Telescope North) to 15 days (Gemini North) after the burst; the decay rate of the optical afterglow shows a steep-to-shallow transition (from alpha_1=1.48 \pm 0.06 to alpha_2=0.88 \pm 0.03) approximately 13 min after the burst. We suggest the early, steep component is due to a reverse shock and show that the magnetic energy density in the ejecta, expressed as a fraction of the equipartion value, is a few ten times larger than in the forward shock in the early afterglow phase. The ejecta might be endowed with primordial magnetic fields at the central engine. The optical light curve implies a late-time break at about 1.5 days after the burst, while there is no evidence of the simultaneous break in the X-ray light curve. We model the broad band emission and show that some afterglow characteristics (the steeper decay in X-ray and the shallow spectral index from optical to X-ray) are difficult to explain in the framework of the standard fireball model. This might imply that the X-ray afterglow is due to an additional emission process, such as late time central engine activity rather than blast-wave shock emission. We provide an overview of the robotic Super-LOTIS (Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System) telescope and present results from gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow observations using Super-LOTIS and other Steward Observatory telescopes. The 0.6-m Super-LOTIS telescope is a fully robotic system dedicated to the measurement of prompt and early time optical emission from GRBs. The system began routine operations from its Steward Observatory site atop Kitt Peak in April 2000 and currently operates every clear night. The telescope is instrumented with an optical CCD camera and a four position filter wheel. It is capable of observing Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) error boxes as early or earlier than the Swift UV/Optical Telescope (UVOT). Super-LOTIS complements the UVOT observations by providing early R- and I-band imaging. We also use the suite of Steward Observatory telescopes including the 1.6-m Kuiper, the 2.3-m Bok, the 6.5-m MMT, and the 8.4-m Large Binocular Telescope to perform follow-up optical and near infrared observations of GRB afterglows. We use semi-analytic techniques to evaluate the burst sensitivity of designs for the EXIST hard X-ray survey mission. Applying these techniques to the mission design proposed for the Beyond Einstein program, we find that with its very large field-of-view and faint gamma-ray burst detection threshold, EXIST will detect and localize approximately two bursts per day, a large fraction of which may be at high redshift. We estimate that EXIST's maximum sensitivity will be ~4 times greater than that of Swift's Burst Alert Telescope. Bursts will be localized to better than 40 arcsec at threshold, with a burst position as good as a few arcsec for strong bursts. EXIST's combination of three different detector systems will provide spectra from 3 keV to more than 10 MeV. We report early follow-up observations of the error box of the short burst 050813 using the telescopes at Calar Alto and at Observatorio Sierra Nevada (OSN), followed by deep VLT/FORS2 I-band observations obtained under very good seeing conditions 5.7 and 11.7 days after the event. Neither a fading afterglow, nor a rising SN component was found, so the potential GRB host galaxy has not been identified based on a comparison of the two VLT images taken at different epoches. We discuss if any of the galaxies present in the original 10 arcsec XRT error circle could be the host. In any case, the optical afterglow of GRB 050813 was of very low luminosity. We conclude that all these properties are consistent with the binary compact merger hypothesis for the progenitor of GRB 050813., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. Neutrino oscillations affect light element synthesis through the neutrino-process in supernova explosions. The 7Li and 11B yields produced in a supernova explosion of a 16.2 solar-mass star model increase by factors of 1.9 and 1.3 in the case of large mixing angle solution with normal mass hierarchy and sin^{2}2theta_{13} > 0.002 compared with those without the oscillations. In the case of inverted mass hierarchy or nonadiabatic 13-mixing resonance, the increment of their yields is much smaller. Neutrino oscillations raise the reaction rates of charged-current neutrino-process reactions in the region outside oxygen-rich layers. The number ratio of 7Li/11B could be a tracer of normal mass hierarchy and relatively large theta_{13}, still satisfying sin^{2}2theta_{13} < 0.1, through future precise observations in stars having strong supernova component., Comment: 35 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

The supernova SN 2006aj associated with GRB 060218 is the second-closest GRB-SN observed to date (z=0.033). We present Very Large Telescope, Liverpool Telescope, and Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope multi-color photometry of SN 2006aj. This supernova is found to be subluminous and rapidly evolving. Its early light curve includes an additional wavelength-dependent component, which can be interpreted as shock break-out. We compare the photometric evolution of multi-band light curves with the corresponding properties of the present sample of more than 10 GRB-SNe with precisely known redshifts. Using host-galaxy extinction measurements, we derive extinction-corrected GRB-SN luminosities and place SN 2006aj in the context of this GRB-selected supernova sample as well as in the context of local stripped-envelope supernovae., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, updated references

Aim: We present early optical spectroscopy of the afterglow of the gamma-ray burst GRB 060206 with the aim of determining the metallicity of the GRB absorber and the physical conditions in the circumburst medium. We also discuss how GRBs may be important complementary probes of cosmic chemical evolution. Method: Absorption line study of the GRB afterglow spectrum. Results: We determine the redshift of the GRB to be z=4.04795+/-0.00020. Based on the measurement of the neutral hydrogen column density from the damped Lyman-alpha line and the metal content from weak, unsaturated Sii lines we derive a metallicity of [S/H] =-0.84+/-0.10. This is one of the highest metallicities measured from absorption lines at z~4. From the very high column densities for the forbidden Siii*, Oi*, and Oi** lines we infer very high densities and low temperatures in the system. There is evidence for the presence of H$_2$ molecules with logN(H_2) ~ 17.0, translating into a molecular fraction of logf \~ -3.5 with f=2N(H_2)/(2N(H_2)+ N(Hi)). Even if GRBs are only formed by single massive stars with metallicities below ~0.3Z(solar), they could still be fairly unbiased tracers of the bulk of the star formation at z>2. Hence, metallicities as derived for GRB060206 here for a complete sample of GRB afterglows will directly show the distribution of metallicities for representative star-forming galaxies at these redshifts., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Light element synthesis in supernovae through neutrino-nucleus interactions, i.e., the nu-process, is affected by neutrino oscillations in the supernova environment. There is a resonance of 13-mixing in the O/C layer, which increases the rates of charged-current nu-process reactions in the outer He-rich layer. The yields of 7Li and 11B increase by about a factor of 1.9 and 1.3, respectively, for a normal mass hierarchy and an adiabatic 13-mixing resonance, compared to those without neutrino oscillations. In the case of an inverted mass hierarchy and a non-adiabatic 13-mixing resonance, the increase in the 7Li and 11B yields is much smaller. Observations of the 7Li/11B ratio in stars showing signs of supernova enrichment could thus provide a unique test of neutrino oscillations and constrain their parameters and the mass hierarchy., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

According to standard models supernovae produce radioactive $^{44}$Ti, which should be visible in gamma-rays following decay to $^{44}$Ca for a few centuries. $^{44}Ti production is believed to be the source of cosmic $^{44}$Ca, whose abundance is well established. Yet, gamma-ray telescopes have not seen the expected young remnants of core collapse events. The $^{44}$Ti mean life of $\tau \simeq$ 89 y and the Galactic supernova rate of $\simeq$ 3/100 y imply $\simeq$ several detectable $^{44}Ti gamma-ray sources, but only one is clearly seen, the 340-year-old Cas A SNR. Furthermore, supernovae which produce much $^{44}Ti are expected to occur primarily in the inner part of the Galaxy, where young massive stars are most abundant. Because the Galaxy is transparent to gamma-rays, this should be the dominant location of expected gamma-ray sources. Yet the Cas A SNR as the only one source is located far from the inner Galaxy (at longitude 112 degree). We evaluate the surprising absence of detectable supernovae from the past three centuries. We discuss whether our understanding of SN explosions, their $^{44}Ti yields, their spatial distributions, and statistical arguments can be stretched so that this apparent disagreement may be accommodated within reasonable expectations, or if we have to revise some or all of the above aspects to bring expectations in agreement with the observations. We conclude that either core collapse supernovae have been improbably rare in the Galaxy during the past few centuries, or $^{44}Ti-producing supernovae are atypical supernovae. We also present a new argument based on $^{44}$Ca/$^{40}$Ca ratios in mainstream SiC stardust grains that may cast doubt on massive-He-cap Type I supernovae as the source of most galactic $^{44}$Ca., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics 2006. We present Follow-Up Network for Gamma-Ray Bursts (FUN GRB) Collaboration observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 021211 made between 143 seconds and 102 days after the burst. Our unique data set includes the earliest filtered detections and color information for an afterglow in the pre-Swift era. We find that the afterglow is best described by (1) propagation through a wind-swept medium, (2) a cooling break that is blueward of the observed optical frequencies, and (3) a hard electron energy distribution. However, superimposed on this "standard model" behavior we find significant chromatic variations within the first few hours after the burst. We consider possible reasons for these variations, including the possibility that they are due to a dust echo. Finally, we constrain physical parameters that describe the afterglow and surrounding medium for a variety of scenarios and find that GRB 021211's afterglow is faint for a combination of 3-4 reasons: (1) a low fraction of energy in relativistic electrons, (2) a low density for the wind-swept medium, implying either a low mass-loss rate and/or a high wind velocity for the progenitor, (3) a wide opening/viewing angle for the jet, and possibly (4) moderate source frame extinction. The jet appears to be significantly far from equipartition and magnetically dominated. We present an update of our systematic analysis of all Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow data, now published through the end of 2004, in an attempt to detect the predicted supernova light component. We fit the observed photometric light curves as the sum of an afterglow, an underlying host galaxy, and a supernova component. The latter is modeled using published UBVRI light curves of SN 1998bw as a template. The total sample of afterglows with established redshifts contains now 29 bursts (GRB 970228 - GRB 041006). For 13 of them a weak supernova excess (scaled to SN 1998bw) was found. In agreement with our earlier result (Zeh et al. 2004) we find that also in the updated sample all bursts with redshift < 0.7 show a supernova excess in their afterglow light curves. The general lack of a detection of a supernova component at larger redshifts can be explained with selection effects. These results strongly support our previous conclusion based on all afterglow data of the years 1997 to 2002 that in fact all afterglows of long-duration GRBs contain light from an associated supernova., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, To appear in Proc. GRB 040403 is one of the faintest gamma-ray bursts for which a rapid and accurate localization has been obtained. Here we report on the gamma-ray properties of this burst, based on observations with the IBIS instrument aboard INTEGRAL, and the results of searches for its optical afterglow. The steep spectrum (power law photon index = 1.9 in the 20-200 keV range) implies that GRB 040403 is most likely an X-ray rich burst. Our optical limit of R > 24.2 at 16.5 hours after the burst, indicates a rather faint afterglow, similar to those seen in other relatively soft and faint bursts., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters

The center of our Galaxy is a known strong source of electron-positron 511-keV annihilation radiation. Thus far, however, there have been no reliable detections of annihilation radiation outside of the central radian of our Galaxy. One of the primary objectives of the INTEGRAL (INTErnational Gamma-RAy Astrophysics Laboratory) mission, launched in Oct. 2002, is the detailed study of this radiation. The Spectrometer on INTEGRAL (SPI) is a high resolution coded-aperture gamma-ray telescope with an unprecedented combination of sensitivity, angular resolution and energy resolution. We report results from the first 10 months of observation. During this period a significant fraction of the observing time was spent in or near the Galactic Plane. No positive annihilation flux was detected outside of the central region (|l| > 40 deg) of our Galaxy. The rapid dissemination of an arcmin-sized HETE-2 localization of the long-duration X-ray flash GRB 030528 led to a ground-based multi-observatory follow-up campaign. We report the discovery of the near-IR afterglow, and also describe the detection of the underlying host galaxy in the optical and near-IR bands. The afterglow is classified as "optically dark" as it was not detected in the optical band. The K-band photometry presented here suggests that the lack of optical detection was simply the result of observational limitations (lack of rapid and deep observations plus high foreground extinction). Simple power law fits to the afterglow in the K-band suggest a typically decay with a slope of alpha=1.2. The properties of the host are consistent with the idea that GRB hosts are star forming blue galaxies. The redshift of GRB 030528 can not be determined accurately, but the data favour redshifts less than unity. We report results from a comprehensive follow-up observing campaign of the afterglow of GRB 030226, including VLT spectroscopy, VLT polarimetry, and Chandra X-ray observations. In addition, we present BOOTES-1 wide-field observations at the time of the occurrence of the burst. First observations at ESO started 0.2 days after the event when the GRB afterglow was at a magnitude of R~19 and continued until the afterglow had faded below the detection threshold (R>26). No underlying host galaxy was found. The optical light curve shows a break around 0.8 days after the burst, which is achromatic within the observational errors, supporting the view that it was due to a jetted explosion. Close to the break time the degree of linear polarization of the afterglow light was less than 1.1%, which favors a uniform jet model rather than a structured one. VLT spectra show two absorption line systems at redshifts z=1.962+/-0.001 and at z=1.986+/-0.001, placing the lower limit for the redshift of the GRB close to 2. We emphasize that the kinematics and the composition of the absorbing clouds responsible for these line systems is very similar to those observed in the afterglow of GRB 021004. We report the results of a deep near-infrared survey with VLT/ISAAC of the environment of the supernova remnant N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which contains the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 0526-66. Two of the four confirmed SGRs are potentially associated with compact stellar clusters. We thus searched for a similar association of SGR 0526-66, and imaged a young stellar cluster at a projected distance of ~30 pc from the SGR. This constitutes the third cluster-SGR link, and lends support to scenarios in which SGR progenitors originate in young, dusty clusters. We explore the prospects for simultaneous, broad-band, multiwavelength polarimetric observations of GRB afterglows. We focus on the role of cosmic dust in GRB host galaxies on the observed percentage polarization of afterglows in the optical/near-infrared bands as a function of redshift. Our driving point is the afterglow of GRB 030329, for which we obtained polarimetric data in the R band and K band simultaneously about 1.5 days after the burst. We argue that polarimetric observations can be very sensitive to dust in a GRB host, because dust can render the polarization of an afterglow wavelength-dependent. We discuss the consequences for the interpretation of observational data and emphasize the important role of very early polarimetric follow-up observations in all bands, when afterglows are still bright, to study the physical properties of dust and magnetic fields in high-z galaxies., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present photometry and spectroscopy of the afterglow of GRB 030323. VLT spectra of the afterglow show damped Lya (DLA) absorption and low- and high-ionization lines at a redshift z=3.3718+-0.0005. The inferred neutral hydrogen column density, log N(HI)=21.90+-0.07, is larger than any (GRB- or QSO-) DLA HI column density inferred directly from Lya in absorption. From the afterglow photometry, we derive a conservative upper limit to the host-galaxy extinction: A(V)<0.5 mag. The iron abundance is [Fe/H]=-1.47+-0.11, while the metallicity of the gas as measured from sulphur is [S/H]=-1.26+-0.20. We derive an upper limit on the H2 molecular fraction of 2N(H2)/(2N(H2)+N(HI))<~10^-6. In the Lya trough, a Lya emission line is detected, which corresponds to a star-formation rate (not corrected for dust extinction) of roughly 1 Msun per year. All these results are consistent with the host galaxy of GRB 030323 consisting of a low metallicity gas with a low dust content. We detect fine-structure lines of silicon, SiII*, which have never been clearly detected in QSO-DLAs; this suggests that these lines are produced in the vicinity of the GRB explosion site. Under the assumption that these fine-structure levels are populated by particle collisions, we estimate the HI volume density to be n_HI=100-10000 cm^-3. HST/ACS imaging 4 months after the burst shows an extended AB(F606W)=28.0+-0.3 mag object at a distance of 0.14" (1kpc) from the early afterglow location, which presumably is the host galaxy of GRB 030323., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We systematically reanalyzed all Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow data published through the end of 2002, in an attempt to detect the predicted supernova light component and to gain statistical insight on its phenomenological properties. We fit the observed photometric light curves as the sum of an afterglow, an underlying host galaxy, and a supernova component. The latter is modeled using published multi-color light curves of SN 1998bw as a template. The total sample of afterglows with established redshifts contains 21 bursts (GRB 970228 - GRB 021211). For nine of these GRBs a weak supernova excess (scaled to SN 1998bw) was found, what makes this to one of the first samples of high-z core collapse supernovae. Among this sample are all bursts with redshifts less than ~0.7. These results strongly support the notion that in fact all afterglows of long-duration GRBs contain light from an associated supernova. A statistics of the physical parameters of these GRB-supernovae shows that SN 1998bw was at the bright end of its class, while it was not special with respect to its light curve shape. The shape of the gamma-ray line from radioactive 26Al, at 1808.7 keV energy in the frame of the decaying isotope, is determined by its kinematics when it decays, typically 10^6 y after its ejection into the interstellar medium from its nucleosynthesis source. Three measurements of the line width exist: HEAO-C's 1982 value of (0+3) keV FWHM, the GRIS 1996 value of (5.4 +/- 1.3) keV FWHM, and the recent RHESSI value of (2.0 +/- 0.8) keV FWHM, suggesting either "cold", "hot", or "warm" 26Al in the ISM. We model the line width as expected from Galactic rotation, expanding supernova ejecta, and/or Wolf-Rayet winds, and predict a value below 1 keV (FWHM) with plausible assumptions about 26Al initial velocities and expansion history. Even though the recent RHESSI measurement reduces the need to explain a broad line corresponding to 540 km/s mean 26Al velocity through extreme assumptions about grain transport of 26Al or huge interstellar cavities, our results suggest that standard 26Al ejection models produce a line on the narrow side of what is observed by RHESSI and INTEGRAL. Improved INTEGRAL and RHESSI spatially-resolved line width measurements should help to disentangle the effects of Galactic rotation from the ISM trajectories of 26Al., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We discover a break in the GRB 011121 afterglow light curve after 1.3 days, which implies an initial jet opening angle of about 9 deg. The SED during the first four days is achromatic, and supports the jet origin of this break. The SED during the supernova bump can be best represented by a black body with a temperature of 6000 K. The deduced parameters for the decay slope as well as the spectral index favor a wind scenario, i.e. an outflow into a circum-burst environment shaped by the stellar wind of a massive GRB progenitor. Due to its low redshift of z=0.36, GRB 011121 has been the best example for the GRB-supernova connection until GRB 030329, and provides compelling evidence for a circum-burster wind region expected to exist if the progenitor was a massive star., Comment: 22 pages ApJ style, accepted for publication

Bearing on the model for the time-dependent metagalactic radiation field developed in the first paper of this series, we compute the gamma-ray attenuation due to pair production in photon-photon scattering. Emphasis is on the effects of varying the star formation rate and the fraction of UV radiation assumed to escape from the star forming regions, the latter being important mainly for high-redshift sources. Conversely, we investigate how the metagalactic radiation field can be measured from the gamma-ray pair creation cutoff as a function of redshift, the Fazio-Stecker relation. A long Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) was detected with the instruments on board the INTEGRAL satellite on January 31 2003. Although most of the GRB, which lasted $\sim$150 seconds, occurred during a satellite slew, the automatic software of the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System was able to detect it in near-real time. Here we report the results obtained with the IBIS instrument, which detected GRB 030131 in the 15 keV - 200 keV energy range, and ESO/VLT observations of its optical transient. The burst displays a complex time profile with numerous peaks. The peak spectrum can be described by a single power law with photon index $\Gamma\simeq$1.7 and has a flux of $\sim$2 photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 20-200 keV energy band. The high sensitivity of IBIS has made it possible for the first time to perform detailed time-resolved spectroscopy of a GRB with a fluence of 7$\times10^{-6}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ (20-200 keV)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 5 pages, 4 figures, latex

The Cosmic Gamma-ray Background (CGB) in the MeV regime has been measured with COMPTEL and SMM. The origin of the CGB in this energy regime is believed to be dominated by gamma-rays from Type Ia supernovae. We calculate the CGB spectrum within the framework of FRW cosmology as a function of the cosmic star formation rate, SFR(z). Several estimates of the SFR(z) have been reported since the pioneering work of Madau et al. Here we discuss observational constraints on SFR(z) derived from models of the CGB. In particular, we consider the SFR obtained from Gamma-Ray Burst observations, which increases dramatically with redshift beyond z ~ 1 in contrast to most estimates which saturate or show a mild increase with redshift. Gamma-ray bursts may be the most powerful tracers of star formation in the early universe and thus provide signposts of the initial epoch of element synthesis. The star formation rate implied by GRB statistics results in a gamma-ray background that matches the observations more closely than that inferred from other tracers of star formation. This may provide some support for the GRB/SFR-paradigm, which in turn promises a powerful diagnostic of star formation, and thus cosmic chemical evolution, from the era of Population III stars to the present.

How massive stars die -- what sort of explosion and remnant each produces -- depends chiefly on the masses of their helium cores and hydrogen envelopes at death. For single stars, stellar winds are the only means of mass loss, and these are chiefly a function of the metallicity of the star. We discuss how metallicity, and a simplified prescription for its effect on mass loss, affects the evolution and final fate of massive stars. We map, as a function of mass and metallicity, where black holes and neutron stars are likely to form and where different types of supernovae are produced. Integrating over an initial mass function, we derive the relative populations as a function of metallicity. Provided single stars rotate rapidly enough at death, we speculate upon stellar populations that might produce gamma-ray bursts and jet-driven supernovae., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figues, submitted to ApJ

A next generation Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) mission to follow the upcoming Swift mission is described. The proposed Energetic X-ray Imaging Survey Telescope, EXIST, would yield the limiting (practical) GRB trigger sensitivity, broad-band spectral and temporal response, and spatial resolution over a wide field. It would provide high resolution spectra and locations for GRBs detected at GeV energies with GLAST. Together with the next generation missions Constellation-X, NGST and LISA and optical-survey (LSST) telescopes, EXIST would enable GRBs to be used as probes of the early universe and the first generation of stars. EXIST alone would give ~10-50" positions (long or short GRBs), approximate redshifts from lags, and constrain physics of jets, orphan afterglows, neutrinos and SGRs., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Monte Carlo simulations of Galactic Supernovae are carried out to study the rate of nearby events, which may have a direct effect on Earth's ecology though ionizing radiation and cosmic ray bombardment. GRBs contribute to the evolving cosmic radiation field. We discuss the contribution of GRBs to the high-energy background, and the effect of pair creation off low-energy photons on their observable TeV spectrum.

We report on mid-infrared observations of the compact stellar cluster located in the proximity of SGR 1900+14, and the radio/X-ray position of this soft-gamma repeater. Observations were performed in May and June of 2001 when the bursting source was in an active state. We present multi-instrument optical observations of the High Energy Transient Explorer (HETE-2)/Interplanetary Network (IPN) error box of GRB 010921. This event was the first gamma ray burst (GRB) localized by HETE-2 which has resulted in the detection of an optical afterglow. In this paper we report the earliest known observations of the GRB010921 field, taken with the 0.11-m Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System (LOTIS) telescope, and the earliest known detection of the GRB010921 optical afterglow, using the 0.5-m Sloan Digital Sky Survey Photometric Telescope (SDSS PT). Observations with the LOTIS telescope began during a routine sky patrol 52 minutes after the burst. Observations were made with the SDSS PT, the 0.6-m Super-LOTIS telescope, and the 1.34-m Tautenburg Schmidt telescope at 21.3, 21.8, and 37.5 hours after the GRB, respectively. In addition, the host galaxy was observed with the USNOFS 1.0-m telescope 56 days after the burst. We find that at later times (t > 1 day after the burst), the optical afterglow exhibited a power-law decline with a slope of $\alpha = 1.75 \pm 0.28$. We present optical follow up observations of the long GRB 001007 between 6.14 hours and ~468 days after the event. An unusually bright optical afterglow (OA) was seen to decline following a steep power law decay with index alpha = -2.03 +/- 0.11, possibly indicating a break in the light curve at t - to < 3.5 days, as found in other bursts. Upper limits imposed by the LOTIS alerting system 6.14 hours after the gamma ray event provide tentative (1.2 sigma) evidence for a break in the optical light curve. The spectral index beta of the OA yields -1.24 +/- 0.57. These values may be explained both by several fireball jet models and by the cannonball model. Fireball spherical expansion models are not favoured. Late epoch deep imaging revealed the presence of a complex host galaxy system, composed of at least two objects located 1.2" (1.7 sigma) and 1.9" (2.7 sigma) from the afterglow position., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, published in A&A

The COMPTEL observations of the diffuse galactic 1.809 MeV emission attributed to the radioactive decay of 26Al have confirmed the diffuse nature of this interstellar emission line. One of the most significant features of the reconstructed intensity pattern is a flux enhancement in the direction of the Cygnus region. This region is fairly young and contains a wealth of massive stars, most of them grouped in the Cygnus OB associations. Multi-frequency model fitting strongly supports the hypothesis of massive stars and their descendent supernovae being the dominant sources of interstellar 26Al as observed by COMPTEL. Massive stars and supernovae are known to impart a large amount of kinetic energy into the surrounding ISM which lead to shockregions and large cavities. In addition, a large fraction of the electro-magnetic radiation of massive stars lies in the extreme ultra-violet causing photoionisation of the surrounding interstellar medium. We applied a population synthesis model in combination with an analytic model of the expansion of superbubbles to the Cygnus OB associations. The model predicts the expected 1.809 MeV flux and the gamma-ray line intensity due to interstellar 60Fe. We compute the sizes and expansion parameters of the expected HI-structures and the free-free emission intensities due to the photoionizing radiation from massive stars within this region of the sky. We discuss our present understanding of the Cygnus region with respect to the massive star census and history. Our model assigns about 70% of the 1.809 MeV intensity to six known OB associations, about 20% to known isolated sources and roughly 10% to an unkown diffuse component., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 27. We present interplanetary network localization, spectral, and time history information for four short-duration, hard spectrum gamma-ray bursts, GRB000607, 001025B, 001204, and 010119. All of these events were followed up with sensitive radio and optical observations (the first and only such bursts to be followed up in the radio to date), but no detections were made, demonstrating that the short bursts do not have anomalously intense afterglows. We discuss the upper limits, and show that the lack of observable counterparts is consistent both with the hypothesis that the afterglow behavior of the short bursts is like that of the long duration bursts, many of which similarly have no detectable afterglows, as well as with the hypothesis that the short bursts have no detectable afterglows at all. The star forming process in the Milky Way is non-uniform in time and space. The scale of star forming regions ranges from groups within a few pc to large segments of spiral arms with linear dimension of order kpc. When many stars form in a relatively small volume over a short duration, a localized starburst ensues. The energetic impact of such a burst of star formation can severely affect the dynamic structure of the gaseous disk. Stellar winds and supernova explosions drive an expanding superbubble, whose size eventually exceeds the scale height of the disk and thus drives a disk-wind blowing metal enriched gas into the halo. We discuss the basic scenario of superbubble evolution, emphasizing the associated gamma-ray line signatures. The contribution to the cosmic diffuse gamma-ray background (CGB) from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is studied in the 40 keV - 2 MeV regime. We use High Energy Resolution (HER) data from the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) to generate a GRB template spectrum. Although the GRB contribution to the CGB is generally small, in comparison to the dominant flux from Type Ia supernovae, the integrated GRB flux is in fact comparable to that from SNIa in the narrow 10-40 keV range. GRBs contribute to the CGB at the same level as Type II supernovae do. Although BATSE data are not available below ~40 keV, extrapolation of the template spectrum suggests that bursts can fill a significant part of the existing gap between Seyfert galaxies (dominating the CGB below ~ 100 keV) and SNIa (dominating at ~1 MeV). The COMPTEL map of the 1.809 MeV gamma-ray line, which is attributed to the radioactive decay of 26Al, shows significant excess emission in the Cygnus region. Cygnus is a region of recent star formation activity, which is rich in massive, early-type stars concentrated in OB associations. We perform population synthesis studies of this region to model the production and distribution of 26Al, which is predominantly synthesized in massive stars and distributed through stellar winds and core-collapse supernovae. Our simulations of the Cygnus OB associations determine the time-dependent production rate of 26Al. We also estimate the associated production of radioactive 60Fe, which is primarily synthesized in core-collapse supernovae. Gamma-ray line emission from this isotope has yet to be detected. We also track the temporal evolution of the mechanical "luminosity" due to the kinetic energy of stellar winds and supernova ejecta, and the ionizing EUV emission from early-type stars. The observation of the interstellar 1.809 MeV decay-line of radioactive 26Al by the imaging gamma-ray telescope COMPTEL have let to the conclusion, that massive stars and their subsequent core-collapse supernovae are the dominant sources of the interstellar 26Al abundance. Massive stars are known to affect the surrounding interstellar medium by their energetic stellar winds and by the emission of ionising radiation. We present a population synthesis model allowing the correlated investigation of the gamma-ray emission characteristics with integrated matter, kinetic energy and extreme ultra-violet radiation emission of associations of massive stars. We study the time evolution of the various observables. In addition, we discuss systematic as well as statistical uncertainties affecting the model. We report near-infrared and optical follow-up observations of the afterglow of the Gamma-Ray Burst 000418 starting 2.5 days after the occurrence of the burst and extending over nearly seven weeks. GRB 000418 represents the second case for which the afterglow was initially identified by observations in the near-infrared. During the first 10 days its R-band afterglow was well characterized by a single power-law decay with a slope of 0.86. However, at later times the temporal evolution of the afterglow flattens with respect to a simple power-law decay. Attributing this to an underlying host galaxy we find its magnitude to be R=23.9 and an intrinsic afterglow decay slope of 1.22. The afterglow was very red with R-K=4 mag. The observations can be explained by an adiabatic, spherical fireball solution and a heavy reddening due to dust extinction in the host galaxy. Recent observations of the diffuse Galactic gamma-ray glow at 1.809 MeV, attributed to the radioactive decay of 26Al, point towards a massive star origin of this radioactive isotope. Wolf Rayet stars and core-collapse supernovae appear to dominate the production of this isotope. Massive stars are commonly located in clusters and OB associations, regions of recent star formation. We thus discuss the temporal evolution of 26Al, and 60Fe within evolving OB associations. The goal of this study is to utilize the associated gamma-ray lines as a diagnostic tool for the study of correlated star formation, and also to provide more detailed models for the interpretation of data obtained with COMPTEL on the Compton Observatory. We investigate the effects of possible aluminum yield enhancements, predicted for some massive close binary systems. In addition to the ejection of chemically processed matter, massive stars also drive strong stellar winds and emit large fluxes of ionizing radiation. This energy and radiation input into the interstellar medium (ISM) is crucial for the dynamical evolution of the gas and subsequent star forming activity in the galactic disk. We discuss population synthesis models for a variety of star formation histories, and compare the predicted gamma-ray line lightcurves to COMPTEL measurements in the Cygnus region. Radioactive tracers such as 26Al and 60Fe provide a unique gamma-ray tracer of Galactic star formation activity, complementary to other methods using spectral information in the radio, IR or optical bands., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, submitted to A&A
