We present a new method for dealing with geometrical selection effects in galaxy surveys while using a multifractal framework. The power of multifractal analysis lies in its connection to higher order moments, in that it not only probes clustering on different scales but also different densities. We open the discussion into how the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) observations of supermassive black-hole (SMBH) mergers (in the mass range ~10^6-10^8 Msun) may be complementary to pulsar timing-based gravitational wave searches. We consider the toy model of determining pulsar distances by exploiting the fact that LISA SMBH inspiral observations can place tight parameter constraints on the signal present in pulsar timing observations. We also suggest, as a future path of research, the use of LISA ring-down observations from the most massive (>~ a few 10^7 Msun) black-hole mergers, for which the inspiral stage will lie outside the LISA band, as both a trigger and constraint on searches within pulsar timing data for the inspiral stage of the merger., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted for the proceedings of the Amaldi 7 conference

We investigate methods to best estimate the normalisation of the mass density fluctuation power spectrum (sigma_8) using peculiar velocity data from a survey like the Six degree Field Galaxy Velocity Survey (6dFGSv). We focus on two potential problems (i) biases from nonlinear growth of structure and (ii) the large number of velocities in the survey. Simulations of LambdaCDM-like models are used to test the methods. We calculate the likelihood from a full covariance matrix of velocities averaged in grid cells. This simultaneously reduces the number of data points and smooths out nonlinearities which tend to dominate on small scales. We show how the averaging can be taken into account in the predictions in a practical way, and show the effect of the choice of cell size. We find that a cell size can be chosen that significantly reduces the nonlinearities without significantly increasing the error bars on cosmological parameters. We compare our results with those from a principal components analysis following Watkins et al (2002) and Feldman et al (2003) to select a set of optimal moments constructed from linear combinations of the peculiar velocities that are least sensitive to the nonlinear scales. We conclude that averaging in grid cells performs equally well. We find that for a survey such as 6dFGSv we can estimate sigma_8 with less than 3% bias from nonlinearities. We discuss the constraints coming from current observations of type Ia supernovae on cosmological models which allow sudden future singularities of pressure (with the scale factor and the energy density regular). We show that such a sudden singularity may happen in the very near future (e.g. within ten million years) and its prediction at the present moment of cosmic evolution cannot be distinguished, with current observational data, from the prediction given by the standard quintessence scenario of future evolution. Fortunately, sudden future singularities are characterized by a momentary peak of infinite tidal forces only; there is no geodesic incompletness which means that the evolution of the universe may eventually be continued throughout until another ``more serious'' singularity such as Big-Crunch or Big-Rip., Comment: REVTEX4, 4 pages, 2 figures, references changed

We report on the analysis of selected single source data sets from the first round of the Mock LISA Data Challenges (MLDC) for white dwarf binaries. We implemented an end-to-end pipeline consisting of a grid-based coherent pre-processing unit for signal detection, and an automatic Markov Chain Monte Carlo post-processing unit for signal evaluation. We demonstrate that signal detection with our coherent approach is secure and accurate, and is increased in accuracy and supplemented with additional information on the signal parameters by our Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach. We have extended and improved the statistical test recently developed by Rauzy for assessing the completeness in apparent magnitude of magnitude-redshift surveys. Our improved test statistic retains the robust properties -- specifically independence of the spatial distribution of galaxies within a survey -- of the $T_c$ statistic introduced in Rauzy's seminal paper, but now accounts for the presence of both a faint and bright apparent magnitude limit. We demonstrate that a failure to include a bright magnitude limit can significantly affect the performance of Rauzy's $T_c$ statistic. Moreover, we have also introduced a new test statistic, $T_v$, defined in terms of the cumulative distance distribution of galaxies within a redshift survey. These test statistics represent powerful tools for identifying and characterising systematic errors in magnitude-redshift data. We apply our completeness test to three major redshift surveys: The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue (MGC), The Two Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We confirm that MGC and SDSS are complete up to the published (faint) apparent magnitude limit Furthermore, we show that, unless a bright limit is included for 2dFGRS, the data-set displays significant incompleteness at magnitudes brighter than the published limit of $m_{b_{j}}=19.45$ mag., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. This note is concerned with potentially misleading concepts in the treatment of cosmological magnetic fields by magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) modelling. It is not a criticism of MHD itself but rather a cautionary comment on the validity of its use in cosmology. Now that cosmological data are greatly improved compared with a few decades ago, and even better data are imminent, it makes sense to revisit original modelling assumptions and examine critically their shortcomings in respect of modern science. Specifically this article argues that ideal MHD is a poor approximation around recombination, since it inherently restricts evolutionary timescales, and is often misapplied in the existing literature., Comment: 5 pages

The desire to extend the Hubble Diagram to higher redshifts than the range of current Type Ia Supernovae observations has prompted investigation into spectral correlations in Gamma Ray Bursts, in the hope that standard candle-like properties can be identified. In this paper we discuss the potential of these new `cosmic rulers' and highlight their limitations by investigating the constraints that current data can place on an alternative Cosmological model in the form of Conformal Gravity. By fitting current Type 1a Supernovae and Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) data to the predicted luminosity distance redshift relation of both the standard Concordance Model and Conformal Gravity, we show that currently \emph{neither} model is strongly favoured at high redshift. The scatter in the current GRB data testifies to the further work required if GRBs are to cement their place as effective probes of the cosmological distance scale., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure (black & white, colour available). Fourier decomposition is a well established technique used in stellar pulsation. However the quality of reconstructed light curves using this method is reduced when the observed data have uneven phase coverage. We use simulated annealing techniques together with Fourier decomposition to improve the quality of the Fourier decomposition for many OGLE LMC fundamental mode Cepheids. This method restricts the range that Fourier amplitudes can take. The ranges are specified by well sampled Cepheids in the Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds. We also apply this method to reconstructing Cepheid light curves observed by the HST. These typically consist of 12 V band and 4 I band points. We employ a direct Fourier fit to the 12 V band points using the simulated annealing method mentioned above and explicitly derive and use Fourier interrelations to reconstruct the I band light curve. We discuss advantages and drawbacks of this method when applied to HST Cepheid data over existing template methods. Application of this method to reconstruct the light curves of Cepheids observed in NGC 4258 shows that the derived Cepheid distance ($\mu_0=29.38\pm0.06$, random error) is consistent with its geometrical distance ($\mu_0=29.28\pm0.09$) derived from observations of water maser., Comment: LaTex, 52 pages, 8 tables, 24 figures, some figures are in .jpg, ApJ preprint style, ApJ accepted (April 2003)

We present a new method for fitting peculiar velocity models to complete flux limited magnitude-redshifts catalogues, using the luminosity function of the sources as a distance indicator.The method is characterised by its robustness. In particular, no assumptions are made concerning the spatial distribution of sources and their luminosity function. Moreover, selection effects in redshift are allowed. Furthermore the inclusion of additional observables correlated with the absolute magnitude -- such as for example rotation velocity information as described by the Tully-Fisher relation -- is straightforward. As an illustration of the method, the predicted IRAS peculiar velocity model characterised by the density parameter beta is tested on two samples. The application of our method to the Tully-Fisher MarkIII MAT sample leads to a value of beta=0.6 \pm 0.125, fully consistent with the results obtained previously by the VELMOD and ITF methods on similar datasets. Unlike these methods however, we make a very conservative use of the Tully-Fisher information. Specifically, we require to assume neither the linearity of the Tully-Fisher relation nor a gaussian distribution of its residuals. Moreover, the robustness of the method implies that no Malmquist corrections are required. A second application is carried out, using the fluxes of the IRAS 1.2 Jy sample as the distance indicator. In this case the effective depth of the volume in which the velocity model is compared to the data is almost twice the effective depth of the MarkIII MAT sample. The results suggest that the predicted IRAS velocity model, while successful in reproducing locally the cosmic flow, fails to describe the kinematics on larger scales., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, MNRAS in press

In this paper, we derive a physical argument for the existence of Period-luminosity and period-luminosity-colour relations at maximum light. We examine in detail a sample of Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and compare the variance of some PL and PLC type distance indicators based on mean and maximum light. We show that a PLC relation based on maximum light leads to a distance estimator with a dispersion about $10 \%$ smaller than its counterpart using mean light. We also show that a PLC type relation constructed using observations at both maximum and mean light has a significantly $( > 50 \%)$ smaller dispersion than a PLC relation using either maximum or mean light alone. A comparable $( > 30 \%)$ reduction in the dispersion of the corresponding distance estimator, however, in this case requires the relation be applied to a large $( n > 30)$ group of equidistant Cepheids in, e.g., a distant galaxy. We present statistically robust observational evidence which imposes new limits on dynamo saturation in young solar-type stars. These are inferred from the increasing amplitude of the V-band optical flux with rotation, caused by the filling of the disc with surface spots in a non-axisymmetric pattern. Assuming spot coverage acts as a tracer of the total magnetic surface flux we find that the magnetic activity saturates at a level at least 6 -- 10 times greater than that inferred from chromospheric and transition line indicators. We suggest that these new limits imply a minimum rotation for saturation of the dynamo and that for high rotation rates starspot coverage acts as an alternative diagnostic for the stellar dynamo to the chromospheric and transition region line emission fluxes. The fact that the dynamo does not appear to saturate at the low rotation rates indicated by chromospheric indicators should assist evolutionary braking models that have to explain the sudden spin-down of young fast rotating G-dwarfs. We present a new technique for estimating the distance to young open clusters. The method requires accurate measurement of the axial rotation period of late-type members of the cluster: rotation periods are first combined with projected rotation velocities and an estimate of the angular diameter for each star -- obtained using the Barnes-Evans relation between colour and surface brightness. A 'best' cluster distance estimate is then determined using standard techniques from the theory of order statistics which are in common use in the general statistics literature. It is hoped that this new method will prove a useful adjoint to more traditional distance methods, and will provide a better %determination of the distance scale within the solar neighbourhood. In this paper we review the two main approaches to the problem of Malmquist bias which have been adopted in the cosmology literature, and show how these two formulations of the problem represent fundamentally different views of the nature of probability. We discuss the assumptions upon which both approaches are based and indicate some of their limitations. In particular we identify a basic flaw in the definition of homogeneous and inhomogeneous Malmquist corrections as they have frequently been applied in the literature, and indicate how this flaw may be corrected. The statistical properties of galaxy distance estimators are studied and a rigorous framework is developed for identifying and removing the effects of Malmquist bias due to obsevational selection. The prescription of Schechter (1980) for defining unbiased distance estimators is extended to more general -- and more realistic -- cases. The derivation of `optimal' unbiased distance estimators of minimum dispersion, by utilising information from additional -- suitably correlated -- observables, is discussed and the results applied to a calibrating sample from the Fornax cluster, as used in the Mathewson spiral galaxy redshift survey. The optimal distance estimator derived from I-band magnitude, diameter and 21cm line width has an intrinsic scatter which is 25 \% smaller than that of the Tully-Fisher relation quoted for this calibrating sample. We apply the new distance measuring technique of Hendry, O'Dell and Collier- Cameron, 1993, to the Pleiades and $\alpha$ Persei clusters. The method relies on knowledge of the periods, rotation velocities and angular diameters of a sample of late-type stars within each cluster. The angular diameters were found by recalibrating the Barnes-Evans surface brightness relation. Applying our new distance method we derive a Pleiades distance in very good agreement with previous ZAMS fitting determinations, whereas our $\alpha$ Persei distance appears substantially greater. In response to this greater distance, we apply a recent semi-empirical main-seqeunce fitting technique to $\alpha$ Persei and confirm the findings of our new distance indicator. We investigate the effect of using different distance estimators on the recovery of the peculiar velocity field of galaxies using Potent. An inappropriate choice of distance estimator will give rise to spurious flows. Although Potent purports to use only radial velocities in retrieving the potential velocity field of galaxies, the derivation of transverse components is implicit in the smoothing procedures. Thus the possibility of using nonradial line integrals to derive the velocity field arises. In the case of inhomogeneous distributions of galaxies, the optimal path for integration need not be radial, and can be obtained by using max-flow algorithms.
