Search

The DA white dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, as analyzed in the papers for Data Releases 1 and 4, show an increase in surface gravity towards lower effective temperatures below 11500 K. We study the various possible explanations of this effect, from a real increase of the masses to uncertainties or deficiencies of the atmospheric models. No definite answer is found but the tentative conclusion is that it is most likely the current description of convection in the framework of the mixing-length approximation, which leads to this effect., Comment: to appear in the proceedings of the 16th European Workshop on White Dwarfs, Barcelona, 2008

We report on the analysis of 436.1 hrs of nearly continuous high-speed photometry on the pulsating DB white dwarf GD358 acquired with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) during the 2006 international observing run, designated XCOV25. The Fourier transform (FT) of the light curve contains power between 1000 to 4000 microHz, with the dominant peak at 1234 microHz. We find 27 independent frequencies distributed in 10 modes, as well as numerous combination frequencies. Our discussion focuses on a new asteroseismological analysis of GD358, incorporating the 2006 data set and drawing on 24 years of archival observations. Our results reveal that, while the general frequency locations of the identified modes are consistent throughout the years, the multiplet structure is complex and cannot be interpreted simply as l=1 modes in the limit of slow rotation. The high k multiplets exhibit significant variability in structure, amplitude and frequency. Any identification of the m components for the high k multiplets is highly suspect. The k=9 and 8 modes typically do show triplet structure more consistent with theoretical expectations. The frequencies and amplitudes exhibit some variability, but much less than the high k modes. Analysis of the k=9 and 8 multiplet splittings from 1990 to 2008 reveal a long-term change in multiplet splittings coinciding with the 1996 "sforzando" event, where GD358 dramatically altered its pulsation characteristics on a timescale of hours. We explore potential implications, including the possible connections between convection and/or magnetic fields and pulsations. We are searching for new He atmosphere white dwarf pulsators (DBVs) based on the newly found white dwarf stars from the spectra obtained by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. DBVs pulsate at hotter temperature ranges than their better known cousins, the H atmosphere white dwarf pulsators (DAVs or ZZ Ceti stars). Since the evolution of white dwarf stars is characterized by cooling, asteroseismological studies of DBVs give us opportunities to study white dwarf structure at a different evolutionary stage than the DAVs. The hottest DBVs are thought to have neutrino luminosities exceeding their photon luminosities (Winget et al. 2004), a quantity measurable through asteroseismology. Therefore, they can also be used to study neutrino physics in the stellar interior. So far we have discovered nine new DBVs, doubling the number of previously known DBVs. PG 1159-035, a pre-white dwarf with T=140000 K, is the prototype of the PG1159 spectroscopic class and the DOV pulsating class. Changes in the star cause variations in its oscillation periods. The measurement of temporal change in the oscillation periods, dP/dt, allows us to estimate directly rates of stellar evolutionary changes, such as the cooling rate and the envelope contraction rate, providing a way to test and refine evolutionary models for pre-white dwarf pulsating stars. We measured 27 pulsation modes period changes. The periods varied at rates of between 1 and 100 ms/yr, and several can be directly measured with a relative standard uncertainty below 10%. For the 516.0 s mode (the highest in amplitude) in particular, not only the value of dP/dt can be measured directly with a relative standard uncertainty of 2%, but the second order period change, d(dP/dt)/dt, can also be calculated reliably. By using the (O-C) method we refined the dP/dt and estimated the d(dP/dt)/dt for six other pulsation periods. As a first application, we calculated the change in the PG 1559-035 rotation period, dP_rot/dt = -2.13*10^{-6} s/s, the envelope contraction rate dR/dt = -2.2*10^{-13} solar radius/s, and the cooling rante dT/dt = -1.42*10^{-3} K/s., Comment: 8 pages; 2 figures; 2 tables; appendix with 2 tables

Galactic history is written in the white dwarf stars. Their surface properties hint at interiors composed of matter under extreme conditions. In the forty years since their discovery, pulsating white dwarf stars have moved from side-show curiosities to center stage as important tools for unraveling the deep mysteries of the Universe. Innovative observational techniques and theoretical modeling tools have breathed life into precision asteroseismology. We are just learning to use this powerful tool, confronting theoretical models with observed frequencies and their time rate-of-change. With this tool, we calibrate white dwarf cosmochronology; we explore equations of state; we measure stellar masses, rotation rates, and nuclear reaction rates; we explore the physics of interior crystallization; we study the structure of the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae, and we test models of dark matter. We present the analysis of a total of 177h of high-quality optical time-series photometry of the helium atmosphere pulsating white dwarf (DBV) EC 20058-5234. The bulk of the observations (135h) were obtained during a WET campaign (XCOV15) in July 1997 that featured coordinated observing from 4 southern observatory sites over an 8-day period. The remaining data (42h) were obtained in June 2004 at Mt John Observatory in NZ over a one-week observing period. This work significantly extends the discovery observations of this low-amplitude (few percent) pulsator by increasing the number of detected frequencies from 8 to 18, and employs a simulation procedure to confirm the reality of these frequencies to a high level of significance (1 in 1000). The nature of the observed pulsation spectrum precludes identification of unique pulsation mode properties using any clearly discernable trends. However, we have used a global modelling procedure employing genetic algorithm techniques to identify the n, l values of 8 pulsation modes, and thereby obtain asteroseismic measurements of several model parameters, including the stellar mass (0.55 M_sun) and T_eff (~28200 K). These values are consistent with those derived from published spectral fitting: T_eff ~ 28400 K and log g ~ 7.86. We also present persuasive evidence from apparent rotational mode splitting for two of the modes that indicates this compact object is a relatively rapid rotator with a period of 2h. In direct analogy with the corresponding properties of the hydrogen (DAV) atmosphere pulsators, the stable low-amplitude pulsation behaviour of EC 20058 is entirely consistent with its inferred effective temperature, which indicates it is close to the blue edge of the DBV instability strip. We present evidence that PG1159 stars could harbour He--rich envelopes substantially thinner than those predicted by current evolutionary models with current estimates of mass loss, which may be attributable to an extensive mass--loss episode during the born--again AGB phase. Specifically, we show that the models with thin He--rich envelopes predict remarkably large magnitudes of the rates of period change of the trapped and untrapped modes observed in the pulsating star PG 1159$-$035. This is a consequence of the much shorter evolutionary timescale of the models with thin He--rich envelopes during the low--gravity PG1159 regime. Our findings are particularly interesting in view of the suggestion of an evolutionary link between the helium--deficient PG1159 star H1504+65 and the recently discovered white dwarfs with almost pure carbon atmospheres., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. We calculate and explore an extensive adiabatic model grid for pulsating white dwarfs with H dominated atmospheres, the ZZ Ceti stars. We also compared the computed modes with the observed ones for five ZZ Ceti stars that are a representative sample of the whole class of pulsators. We describe our new approach for seismological studies, using the relative observed amplitudes to give weights for the periods in the fit and the external mass and temperature determinations as a guide. An asteroseismological study of PG 1159-035, the prototype of the GW Vir variable stars, has been performed on the basis of detailed and full PG1159 evolutionary models presented by Miller Bertolami & Althaus (2006). We carried out extensive computations of adiabatic g-mode pulsation periods on PG1159 evolutionary models with stellar masses spanning the range 0.530 to 0.741 Mo. We derive a stellar mass in the range 0.56-0.59 Mo from the period-spacing data alone. We also find, on the basis of a period-fit procedure, a seismic model representative of PG 1159-035 that reproduces the observed period pattern with an average of the period differences of 0.64-1.03 s, consistent with the expected model uncertainties. The results of the period-fit analysis carried out in this work suggest that the surface gravity of PG 1159-035 would be 1 sigma larger than the spectroscopically inferred gravity. For our best-fit model of PG 1159-035, all of the pulsation modes are characterized by positive rates of period changes, at odds with the measurements by Costa & Kepler (2007)., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. PG 1159-035, a pre-white dwarf with T_eff=140,000 K, is the prototype of both two classes: the PG1159 spectroscopic class and the DOV pulsating class. Previous studies of PG 1159-035 photometric data obtained with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) showed a rich frequency spectrum allowing the identification of 122 pulsation modes. In this work, we used all available WET photometric data from 1983, 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2002 to identify the pulsation periods and identified 76 additional pulsation modes, increasing to 198 the number of known pulsation modes in PG 1159-035, the largest number of modes detected in any star besides the Sun. From the period spacing we estimated a mass M = 0.59 +/- 0.02 solar masses for PG 1159-035, with the uncertainty dominated by the models, not the observation. Deviations in the regular period spacing suggest that some of the pulsation modes are trapped, even though the star is a pre-white dwarf and the gravitational settling is ongoing. The position of the transition zone that causes the mode trapping was calculated at r_c = 0.83 +/- 0.05 stellar radius. From the multiplet splitting, we calculated the rotational period P_rot = 1.3920 +/- 0.0008 days and an upper limit for the magnetic field, B < 2000 G. The total power of the pulsation modes at the stellar surface changed less than 30% for l=1 modes and less than 50% for l=2 modes. We find no evidence of linear combinations between the 198 pulsation mode frequencies. PG 1159-035 models have not significative convection zones, supporting the hypothesis that nonlinearity arises in the convection zones in cooler pulsating white dwarf stars., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, appendix with 6 long tables. We analyze systematics in the asteroseismological mass determination methods in pulsating PG 1159 stars. We compare the seismic masses resulting from the comparison of the observed mean period spacings with the usually adopted asymptotic period spacings, and the average of the computed period spacings. Computations are based on full PG1159 evolutionary models with stellar masses ranging from 0.530 to 0.741 Mo that take into account the complete evolution of progenitor stars. We conclude that asteroseismology is a precise and powerful technique that determines the masses to a high internal accuracy, but it depends on the adopted mass determination method. In particular, we find that in the case of pulsating PG 1159 stars characterized by short pulsation periods, like PG 2131+066 and PG 0122+200, the employment of the asymptotic period spacings overestimates the stellar mass by about 0.06 Mo as compared with inferences from the average of the period spacings. In this case, the discrepancy between asteroseismological and spectroscopical masses is markedly reduced when use is made of the mean period spacing instead of the asymptotic period spacing., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We present the first phase in our ongoing work to use Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data to create separate white dwarf (WD) luminosity functions for two or more different mass ranges. In this paper, we determine the completeness of the SDSS spectroscopic white dwarf sample by comparing a proper-motion selected sample of WDs from SDSS imaging data with a large catalog of spectroscopically determined WDs. We derive a selection probability as a function of a single color (g-i) and apparent magnitude (g) that covers the range -1.0 < g-i < 0.2 and 15 < g < 19.5. We address the observed upturn in log g for white dwarfs with Teff <~ 12,000K and offer arguments that the problem is limited to the line profiles and is not present in the continuum. We offer an empirical method of removing the upturn, recovering a reasonable mass function for white dwarfs with Teff < 12,000K. Finally, we present a white dwarf luminosity function with nearly an order of magnitude (3,358) more spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs than any previous work., Comment: 30 Pages, 12 Figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

The mean pulsation period of ZZ Ceti stars increases with decreasing effective temperature as we traverse from the blue to the red edge of the instability strip. This well-established correlation between the mean period and spectroscopic temperature suggests that the mean period could be utilized as a tool to measure the relative temperature of the star independent of spectroscopy. Measuring the pulsation periods of a ZZ Ceti star is a simple, model-independent, and straight forward process as opposed to a spectroscopic determination of its temperature. Internal uncertainties in determining the spectroscopic temperature of a ZZ Ceti star are at least 200K, 15% of the 1350K width of the instability strip. The uncertainties in determining the mean period arise mostly from amplitude modulation in the pulsation spectrum and are smaller than 100s for 91% of the ZZ Ceti stars, <8% of the 1300s width of the instability strip. In principle this implies that for 90% of the ZZ Ceti stars, the average uncertainty in determining the location of a ZZ Ceti star within the instability strip decreases by a factor of two in utilizing the mean period of the ZZ Ceti star as a temperature indicator rather than conventional spectroscopy. We determined masses for the 7167 DA and 507 DB white dwarf stars classified as single and non-magnetic in data release four of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We obtained revised Teff and log g determinations for the most massive stars by fitting the SDSS optical spectra with a synthetic spectra grid derived from model atmospheres extending to log g=10.0. We also calculate radii from evolutionary models and create volume-corrected mass distributions for our DA and DB samples. The mean mass for the DA stars brighter than g=19 and hotter than Teff=12000K is M(DA)= 0.593+/-0.016M(Sun). For the 150 DBs brighter than g=19 and hotter than Teff=16000K, we find M(DB)=0.711+/-0.009 M(Sun). It appears the mean mass for DB white dwarf stars may be significantly larger than that for DAs. We have observed again two stars inside the ZZ Ceti instability strip that were previously classified as not-observed-to-vary (NOV) by Mukadam et al. (2004) and found them to be low-amplitude variables. Some evidence points to a pure ZZ Ceti instability strip; other evidence contests it. The two stars previously classified as NOV have Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic effective temperatures that place them inside the ZZ Ceti instability strip, and they were "contaminating" the strip as constant stars, which could indicate that the instability strip was no longer a simple evolutionary stage. A pure instability strip indicates that pulsation is a normal phase which all DAs must go through. We used effective temperatures derived from SDSS optical spectra by comparing them with model atmospheres to look for pulsators through time-resolved photometry and stars previously classified as NOV. Our new results indicate, but do not prove, a pure instability strip, because there are still other NOV stars that need to be observed again. We report signal-to-noise ratio SNR ~ 100 optical spectra for four DA white dwarf stars acquired with the GMOS spectrograph of the 8m Gemini north telescope. These stars have 18 ~ 21) optical spectra acquired by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey through model atmosphere fitting are trustworthy. Our spectra range from 3800A to 6000A, therefore including H beta to H9. The H8 line was only marginally present in the SDSS spectra, but is crucial to determine the gravity. When we compare the values published by Kleinman et al. (2004) and Eisenstein et al. (2006) with our line-profile (LPT) fits, the average differences are: Delta Teff ~ 320 K, systematically lower in SDSS, and Delta log g ~ 0.24 dex, systematically larger in SDSS. The correlation between gravity and effective temperature can only be broken at wavelengths bluer than 3800 A. The uncertainties in Teff are 60% larger, and in log g larger by a factor of 4, than the Kleinman et al. (2004) and Eisenstein et al. (2006) internal uncertainties., Comment: 11 pages and 8 figures

We studied the class of DB white dwarf stars, using re-calibrated UV spectra for thirty four DBs obtained with the IUE satellite. By comparing the observed energy distributions with model atmospheres, we simultaneously determine spectroscopic distances (d), effective temperature (Teff), and surface gravities (log g). Using parallax measurements and previous determinations of Teff and log g from optical spectra, we can study whether the atmospheres of eleven DB stars are consistent with pure He or have a small amount of H contamination. We also report on our observations of seventeen stars with Teff close to the DB instability strip through time series photometry and found them to be non variable within our detection limits., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We report the discovery of eleven new ZZ Cetis using telescopes at OPD (Observat\'orio do Pico dos Dias/LNA) in Brazil, the 4.1 m SOAR (Southern Astrophysical Research) telescope at Cerro Pachon, Chile, and the 2.1 m Otto Struve telescope at McDonald observatory. The candidates were selected from the SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) and SPY (ESO SN Ia progenitor survey), based on their Teff obtained from optical spectra fitting. This selection criterion yields the highest success rate of detecting new ZZ Cetis, above 90% in the Teff range from 12000 to 11000 K. We also report on a DA not observed to vary, with a Teff placing the star close to the blue edge of the instability strip. Among our new pulsators, one is a little bit cooler than this star for which pulsations were not detected. There is a fairly tight correlation between the pulsation periods and effective temperatures of ZZ Ceti stars (cooler stars have longer periods). This seems to fit the theoretical picture, where driving occurs in the partial ionization zone, which lies deeper and deeper within the star as it cools. It is reasonable to assume that the pulsation periods should be related to the thermal timescale in the region where driving occurs. As that region sinks further down below the surface, that thermal timescale increases. Assuming this connection, the pulsation periods could provide an additional way to determine effective temperatures, independent of spectroscopy. We report the discovery of fourteen new ZZ Cetis with the 4.1m Southern Astrophysical Research telescope, at Cerro Pachon, in Chile. The candidates were selected from the SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) DA white dwarf stars with Teff obtained from the optical spectra fit, inside the ZZ Ceti instability strip. Considering these stars are multi-periodic pulsators and the pulsations propagate to the nucleus of the star, they carry information on the structure of the star and evolution of the progenitors. The ZZ Cetis discovered till 2003 are mainly within 100 pc from the Sun, and probe only the solar vicinity. The recently discovered ones, and those reported here, may sample a distinct population as they were selected mainly perpendicular to the galactic disk and cover a distance up to ~400pc., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

We report our measurement of the rate of change of period with time dP/dt for the 215 s periodicity in the pulsating white dwarf G 117-B15A, the most stable optical clock known. After 31 years of observations, we have finally obtained a 4 sigma measurement dP/dt_observed = (4.27 +/- 0.80) x 10^{-15} s/s. Taking into account the proper-motion effect of dP/dt_pm = (7.0 +/- 2.0) x 10^{-16} s/s, we obtain a rate of change of period with time of dP/dt = (3.57 +/- 0.82) x 10^{-15} s/s. This value is consistent with the cooling rate in our white dwarf models only for cores of C or C/O. With the refinement of the models, the observed rate of period change can be used to accurately measure the ratio of C/O in the core of the white dwarf., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

We present the observed pulsation spectra of all known non-interacting ZZ Ceti stars (hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf variables; DAVs) and examine changes in their pulsation properties across the instability strip. We confirm the well established trend of increasing pulsation period with decreasing effective temperature across the ZZ Ceti instability strip. We do not find a dramatic order of magnitude increase in the number of observed independent modes in ZZ Ceti stars, traversing from the hot to the cool edge of the instability strip; we find that the cool DAVs have one more mode on average compared to the hot DAVs. We confirm the initial increase in pulsation amplitude at the blue edge, and find strong evidence of a decline in amplitude prior to the red edge. We present the first observational evidence that ZZ Ceti stars lose pulsation energy just before pulsations shut down at the empirical red edge of the instability strip., Comment: ApJ, in press. We report the discovery of eleven new variable DA white dwarf (ZZ Ceti) stars. Candidates were selected by deriving temperatures from model fits to spectra obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We also find objects whose temperatures and gravities indicate they lie within the instability strip for pulsation, but which were not observed to vary. Although the temperatures are based on relatively low S/N spectra, an impure strip is unexpected, and if confirmed suggests that our knowledge of the pulsation mechanism is incomplete. BPM 37093 is the only hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarf currently known which has sufficient mass (~ 1.1 M_sun) to theoretically crystallize while still inside the ZZ Ceti instability strip (T_eff ~ 12,000 K). As a consequence, this star represents our first opportunity to test crystallization theory directly. If the core is substantially crystallized, then the inner boundary for each pulsation mode will be located at the top of the solid core rather than at the center of the star, affecting mainly the average period spacing. This is distinct from the "mode trapping" caused by the stratified surface layers, which modifies the pulsation periods more selectively. In this paper we report on Whole Earth Telescope observations of BPM 37093 obtained in 1998 and 1999. We use the new ZZ Ceti stars (hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf variables; DAVs) discovered within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (Mukadam et al. 2004) to re-define the empirical ZZ Ceti instability strip. This is the first time since the discovery of white dwarf variables in 1968 that we have a homogeneous set of spectra acquired using the same instrument on the same telescope, and with consistent data reductions, for a statistically significant sample of ZZ Ceti stars. The homogeneity of the spectra reduces the scatter in the spectroscopic temperatures and we find a narrow instability strip of width ~950K, from 10850--11800K. We question the purity of the DAV instability strip as we find several non-variables within. We report 323 hours of nearly uninterrupted time series photometric observations of the DBV star GD 358 acquired with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) during May 23rd to June 8th, 2000. We acquired more than 232 000 independent measurements. We also report on 48 hours of time-series photometric observations in Aug 1996. We detected the non-radial g-modes consistent with degree l=1 and radial order 8 to 20 and their linear combinations up to 6th order.We also detect, for the first time, a high amplitude l=2 mode, with a period of 796s. In the 2000 WET data, the largest amplitude modes are similar to those detected with the WET observations of 1990 and 1994, but the highest combination order previously detected was 4th order. At one point during the 1996 observations, most of the pulsation energy was transferred into the radial order k=8 mode, which displayed a sinusoidal pulse shape in spite of the large amplitude. The multiplet structure of the individual modes changes from year to year, and during the 2000 observations only the k=9 mode displays clear normal triplet structure. Even though the pulsation amplitudes change on timescales of days and years, the eigenfrequencies remain essentially the same, showing the stellar structure is not changing on any dynamical timescale., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures, WET data, accepted to A&A

We observe G117-B15A, the most precise optical clock known, to measure the rate of change of the main pulsation period of this blue-edge DAV white dwarf. Even though the obtained value is only within 1 sigma, Pdot = (2.3 +/- 1.4) x 10^{-15} s/s, it is already constraining the evolutionary timescale of this cooling white dwarf star., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We have obtained time-resolved ultraviolet spectroscopy for the pulsating DAV stars G226-29 and G185-32, and for the pulsating DBV star PG1351+489 with the Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph, to compare the ultraviolet to the optical pulsation amplitude and determine the pulsation indices. We find that for essentially all observed pulsation modes, the amplitude rises to the ultraviolet as the theoretical models predict for l=1 non-radial g-modes. We do not find any pulsation mode visible only in the ultraviolet, nor any modes whose phase flips by 180 degrees; in the ultraviolet, as would be expected if high l pulsations were excited. The white dwarfs are promising laboratories for the study of cosmochronology and stellar evolution. Through observations of the pulsating white dwarfs, we can measure their internal structures and compositions, critical to understanding post main sequence evolution, along with their cooling rates, allowing us to calibrate their ages directly. The most important set of white dwarf variables to measure are the oldest of the pulsators, the cool DAVs, which have not previously been explored through asteroseismology due to their complexity and instability. Through a time-series photometry data set spanning ten years, we explore the pulsation spectrum of the cool DAV, G29-38 and find an underlying structure of 19 (not including multiplet components) normal-mode, probably l=1 pulsations amidst an abundance of time variability and linear combination modes. Modelling results are incomplete, but we suggest possible starting directions and discuss probable values for the stellar mass and hydrogen layer size. For the first time, we have made sense out of the complicated power spectra of a large-amplitude DA pulsator. We have shown its seemingly erratic set of observed frequencies can be understood in terms of a recurring set of normal-mode pulsations and their linear combinations. We report our analysis of the stability of pulsation periods in the DAV star (pulsating hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf) ZZ Ceti, also called R548. On the basis of observations that span 31 years, we conclude that the period 213.13 s observed in ZZ Ceti drifts at a rate dP/dt 5 (5.5 plus or minus 1.9) x 10(exp -15) ss(sup -1), after correcting for proper motion. Our results are consistent with previous P values for this mode and an improvement over them because of the larger time base. The characteristic stability timescale implied for the pulsation period is |P||P(raised dot)|greater than or equal to 1.2 Gyr, comparable to the theoretical cooling timescale for the star. Our current stability limit for the period 213.13 s is only slightly less than the present measurement for another DAV, G117-B15A, for the period 215.2 s, establishing this mode in ZZ Ceti as the second most stable optical clock known, comparable to atomic clocks and more stable than most pulsars. Constraining the cooling rate of ZZ Ceti aids theoretical evolutionary models and white dwarf cosmochronology. The drift rate of this clock is small enough that we can set interesting limits on reflex motion due to planetary companions.

The time rate of change for the main pulsation period of the 13,000 K DA white dwarf G117 - B15A has been detected using the Whole Earth Telescope (WET). The observed rate of period change, P(dot) = (12.0 + or - 3.5) x 10 to the -15th s/s, is somewhat larger than the published theoretical calculations of the rate of period change due to cooling, based on carbon core white dwarf models. Other effects that could contribute to the observed rate of period change are discussed.
