Search

The Be/X-ray binary system A0535+262 underwent a giant outburst in May-June 2005, followed by a dimmer outburst in August-September 2005. This increased intensity provided an opportunity to search for redshifted neutron-capture lines from the surface of the neutron star. If discovered, such lines would constrain the neutron star equation of state, providing the motivation of this search. The spectrometer (SPI) on board the INTEGRAL satellite observed the dimmer outburst and provided the data for this research. We have not detected a line with enough significance, with the width-dependent upper limits on the broadened and redshifted neutron capture line in the range of (2 - 11) x 10^(-4) photons cm^(-2) s^(-1). To our knowledge, these are the strongest upper limits on the redshifted 2.2 MeV emission from an accreting neutron star. Our analysis of the transparency of the neutron star surface for 2.2 MeV photons shows that photons have a small but finite chance of leaving the atmosphere unscattered, which diminishes the possibility of detection., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. The timing properties of the 4.45 s pulsar in the Be X-ray binary system GRO J1750-27 are examined using hard X-ray data from INTEGRAL and Swift during a Type II outburst observed during 2008. The orbital parameters of the system are measured and agree well with those found during the last known outburst of the system in 1995. Correcting the effects of the doppler shifting of the period, due to the orbital motion of the pulsar, leads to the detection of an intrinsic spin-up that is well described by a simple model including Pdot and Pdotdot terms of -7.5E-10 ss^-1 and 1E-16 ss^-2 respectively. The model is then used to compare the time-resolved variation of the X-ray flux and intrinsic spin-up against the accretion torque model of Ghosh & Lamb (1979); this finds that GRO J1750-27 is likely located 12-22 kpc distant and that the surface magnetic field of the neutron star is ~2E12 G. The shape of the pulse and the pulsed fraction shows different behaviour above and below 20 keV indicating that the observed pulsations are the convolution of many complex components., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 11 pages, 10 figures and 2 tables

We investigate the spectral and temporal behavior of the high mass X-ray binary Vela X-1 during a phase of high activity, with special focus on the observed giant flares and off states. INTEGRAL observed Vela X-1 in a long almost uninterrupted observation for two weeks in 2003 Nov/Dec. The data were analyzed with OSA 7.0 and FTOOLS 6.2. We derive the pulse period, light curves, spectra, hardness ratios, and hardness intensity diagrams, and study the eclipse. In addition to an already high activity level, Vela X-1 exhibited several intense flares, the brightest ones reaching a maximum intensity of more than 5 Crab in the 20-40 keV band and several off states where the source was no longer detected by INTEGRAL. We determine the pulse period to be 283.5320+/-0.0002 s, which is stable throughout the entire observation. Analyzing the eclipses provided an improvement in the ephemeris. Spectral analysis of the flares indicates that there appear to be two types of flares: relatively brief flares, which can be extremely intense and show spectral softening, in contrast to high intensity states, which are longer and show no softening. Both flares and off states are interpreted as being due to a strongly structured wind of the optical companion. When Vela X-1 encounters a cavity with strongly reduced density, the flux will drop triggering the onset of the propeller effect, which inhibits further accretion, giving rise to off states. The sudden decrease in the density of the material required to trigger the propeller effect in Vela X-1 is of the same order as predicted by theoretical papers about the densities in OB star winds. In the past few years, a new class of High Mass X-Ray Binaries (HMXRB) has been claimed to exist, the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXT). These are X-ray binary systems with a compact companion orbiting a supergiant star which show very short and bright outbursts in a series of activity periods overimposed on longer quiescent periods. Only very recently the first attempts to model the behaviour of these sources have been published, some of them within the framework of accretion from clumpy stellar winds.Our goal is to analyze the properties of XTE J1739-302/IGR J17391-3021 within the context of the clumpy structure of the supergiant wind. We have used INTEGRAL and RXTE/PCA observations in order to obtain broad band (1-200 keV) spectra and light curves of XTE J1739-302 and investigate its X-ray spectrum and temporal variability. We have found that XTE J1739-302 follows a much more complex behaviour than expected. Far from presenting a regular variability pattern, XTE J1739-302 shows periods of high, intermediate, and low flaring activity., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The Galactic Plane Scan (GPS) was one of the core observation programmes of the INTEGRAL satellite. The highly variable accreting pulsar OAO 1657-415 was frequently observed within the GPS. We investigate the spectral and timing properties of OAO 1657-415 and their variability on short and long time scales in the energy range 6-160 keV. During the time covered by the INTEGRAL observations, the pulse period evolution shows an initial spin-down, which is followed by an equally strong spin-up. In combining our results with historical pulse period measurements (correcting them for orbital variation) and with stretches of continuous observations by BATSE, we find that the long-term period evolution is characterised by a long-term spin-up overlayed by sets of relative spin-down/spin-up episodes, which appear to repeat quasi-periodically on a 4.8 yr time scale. We measure an updated local ephemeris and confirm the previously determined orbital period with an improved accuracy. The spectra clearly change with pulse phase. The spectrum measured during the main peak of the pulse profile is particularly hard. We do not find any evidence of a cyclotron line, wether in the phase-averaged spectrum or in phase-resolved spectra., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

The Be/X-ray binary 1A 0535+262 was discovered in 1975 during a giant outburst. Afterwards it has shown periods of quiescence (flux below 10 mCrab), normal outbursts (10 mCrab-1Crab) and occasionally giant outbursts (several Crab). Ending 11 years of quiescence, the last giant outburst took place in May/June 2005, but the source was too close to the Sun to be observed by most satellites. A subsequent normal outburst took place in August 2005, which was observed by INTEGRAL and RXTE TOO observations. We study the spectral and temporal behavior of the High Mass X-ray Binary A 0535+26 during a `pre-outburst flare' which took place ~5 d before the peak of a normal (type I) outburst in August/September 2005. We compare the studied behavior with that observed during the outburst. We analyse RXTE observations that monitored A 0535+26 during the outburst. We complete spectral and timing analyses of the data. We study the evolution of the pulse period, present energy-dependent pulse profiles both at the initial pre-outburst flare and close to outburst maximum, and measure how the cyclotron resonance-scattering feature (hereafter CRSF) evolves. We present three main results: a constant period P=103.3960(5)s is measured until periastron passage, followed by a spin-up with a decreasing period derivative of Pdot=(-1.69+/-0.04)x10^(-8)s/s at MJD 53618, and P remains constant again at the end of the main outburst. The spin-up provides evidence for the existence of an accretion disk during the normal outburst. We measure a CRSF energy of Ecyc~50kev during the pre-outburst flare, and Ecyc~46kev during the main outburst. The pulse shape, which varies significantly during both pre-outburst flare and main outburst, evolves strongly with photon energy., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters. We argue that X-ray flaring variability observed in the transient X-ray pulsar A 0535+26 is due to low-mode magnetospheric instability. This instability develops at the onset of accretion, in the thin boundary layer between the accretion disk and neutron star magnetosphere. As a result, the matter collected in the boundary layer can rapidly fall onto the NS surface close to the magnetic poles, but not exactly along the field lines by which the stationary accretion proceeds. This explains the shift in cyclotron line energy measured using RXTE data in a pre-outburst spike, with respect to the line energy observed during the main outburst. Furthermore, the instability can account for the difference in pulse profiles, and their energy evolution that is different in the pre-outburst flare and main outburst., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in A&A Letters. (abridged) This is the second paper presenting the results of two years of monitoring of GRS 1915+105 with \integral and \rxte and the Ryle Telescope. We present the X-ray spectral and temporal analysis of four observations which showed strong radio to X-ray correlations. During one observation GRS 1915+105 was in a steady state, while during the three others it showed cycles of X-ray dips and spikes (followed by radio flares). We present the time-resolved spectroscopy of these cyclesand show that in all cases the hard X-ray component (the Comptonized emission from a coronal medium) is suppressed in coincidence with a soft X-ray spike that ends the cycle. We interpret these results as evidence that the soft X-ray spike is the trigger of the ejection, and that the ejected medium is the coronal material. In the steady state observation, the X-ray spectrum is indicative of the hard-intermediate state, with the presence of a relatively strong emission at 15 GHz. The X-ray spectra are the sum of a Comptonized component and an extra power law extending to energies >200 keV without any evidence for a cut-off. We observe a possible correlation of the radio flux with that of the power law component, which may indicate that we see direct emission from the jet at hard X-ray energies. We study the energy dependence of a ~4 Hz QPO during the hard-intermediate state observation. The QPO-``spectrum'' is well modeled by a power law with a cut-off at an energy about 11 keV that clearly differs from the relative contribution of the Comptonized component to the overall flux. (Abridged) We report the results of monitoring observations of the Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105 performed simultaneously with INTEGRAL and RXTE Ryle . We present the results of the whole \integral campaign, report the sources that are detected and their fluxes and identify the classes of variability in which GRS 1915+105 is found. The accretion ejection connections are studied in a model independent manner through the source light curves, hardness ratio, and color color diagrams. During a period of steady ``hard'' X-ray state (the so-called class chi) we observe a steady radio flux. We then turn to 3 particular observations during which we observe several types of soft X-ray dips and spikes cycles, followed by radio flares. During these observations GRS 1915+105 is in the so-called nu, lambda, and beta classes of variability. The observation of ejections during class lambda are the first ever reported. We generalize the fact that a (non-major) discrete ejection always occurs, in GRS 1915+105, as a response to an X-ray sequence composed of a spectrally hard X-ray dip terminated by an X-ray spike marking the disappearance of the hard X-ray emission above 18 keV. We also identify the trigger of the ejection as this X-ray spike. A possible correlation between the amplitude of the radio flare and the duration of the X-ray dip is found in our data. In this case the X-ray dips prior to ejections could be seen as the time during which the source accumulates energy and material that is ejected later., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures. We present a detailed analysis of observations of the high mass X-ray binary Cen X-3 spanning two consecutive binary orbits performed with the RXTE satellite in early March 1997. The PCA and HEXTE light curves both show a clear reduction in count rate after mid-orbit for both binary revolutions. We therefore analyze two broad band spectra for each orbit, before and after mid-orbit. Consistent with earlier observations these four joint PCA and HEXTE spectra can be well described using a phenomenological pulsar continuum model, including an iron emission line and a cyclotron resonance scattering feature. While no strong spectral variations were detected, the second half of orbit 2 shows a tendency toward being softer and more strongly absorbed. In order to follow the orbital phase-dependent evolution of the spectrum in greater detail, we model spectra for shorter exposures, confirming that most spectral parameters show either a gradual or sudden change for the second half of the second orbit. A comparison with a simple wind model indicates the existence of an accretion wake in this system. We also present and discuss high resolution pulse profiles for several different energy bands, as well as their hardness ratios. PCA and HEXTE spectra were created for 24 phase bins and fitted using the same model as in the phase averaged case. Systematic pulse phase-dependent variations of several continuum and cyclotron line parameters were detected, most notably a significant increase of the cyclotron line energy during the early rise of the main peak, followed by a gradual decrease. We report first results of a multifrequency campaign from radio to hard X-ray energies of the prominent gamma-ray blazar 3C 279, which was organised around an INTEGRAL ToO observation in January 2006, and triggered on its optical state. The variable blazar was observed at an intermediate optical state, and a well-covered multifrequency spectrum from radio to hard X-ray energies could be derived. The SED shows the typical two-hump shape, the signature of non-thermal synchrotron and inverse-Compton (IC) emission from a relativistic jet. By the significant exposure times of INTEGRAL and Chandra, the IC spectrum (0.3 - 100 keV) was most accurately measured, showing - for the first time - a possible bending. A comparison of this 2006 SED to the one observed in 2003, also centered on an INTEGRAL observation, during an optical low-state, reveals the surprising fact that - despite a significant change at the high-energy synchrotron emission (near-IR/optical/UV) - the rest of the SED remains unchanged. In particular, the low-energy IC emission (X- and hard X-ray energies) remains the same as in 2003, proving that the two emission components do not vary simultaneously, and provides strong constraints on the modelling of the overall emission of 3C 279., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures; to be published in the Proc. of the 6th INTEGRAL workshop "The Obscured Universe" (Moscow, July 2-8, 2006), eds. (abbreviated version of the abstract) We study the physics of cyclotron line formation in the high-energy spectra of accreting X-ray pulsars using Monte Carlo methods, assuming that the line-forming region is a low-density electron plasma in a sub-critical magnetic field. We investigate the dependence of the shape of the fundamental line on angle, geometry, optical depth and temperature. We also discuss variations of the line ratios for non-uniform magnetic fields. These numerical predictions for the line profiles are linked to results from observational data analysis using an XSPEC model based on the Monte Carlo simulations. We apply this model to observational data from RXTE and INTEGRAL. The predicted strong emission wings of the fundamental cyclotron feature are not found in observational data, hinting at a bottom illuminated slab geometry for line formation., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, Astron. We present broadband (3-500 keV) INTEGRAL X-ray spectra and X-ray/optical light curves of the luminous black hole X-ray transient and relativistic jet source GRO J1655-40. Our analysis covers four Target of Opportunity observations of the outburst that started in February 2005. We find that the high energy emission of GRO J1655-40 can be modelled well with an unbroken power-law (with photon indices of 1.72+-0.03,2.21+-0.04 for the first and the second observations, respectively). These correspond to hard and thermal dominant states, respectively. In contrast to many other black hole spectra, high energy complexity in the form of a break or cut-off is not required for the hard state, contrary to previous expectations for this state. We show for the first time that Comptonization by non-thermal electrons is the dominant process for the high energy emission in the hard state. We discuss our results in terms of models for broad-band emission and accretion flows in stellar-mass black holes., Comment: 14 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ. Accreting X-ray pulsars provide us with laboratories for the study of extreme gravitational and magnetic fields, hence accurate descriptions of their observational properties contribute to our understanding of this group of objects. We aim to detect a cyclotron resonance scattering feature in the Be/X-ray binary Cep X-4 and to investigate pulse profile and spectral changes through the outburst. Spectral fitting and timing analysis are employed to probe the properties of Cep X-4 during an outburst in 2002 June. A previously announced cyclotron feature at 30.7 keV is confirmed, while the source shows spectral behaviour and luminosity related changes similar to those observed in previous outbursts. The long-term X-ray lightcurve shows a periodicity at 20.85 d, which could be attributed to the orbit in this Be system., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

In this Letter we present results from INTEGRAL and RXTE observations of the spectral and timing behavior of the High Mass X-ray Binary A 0535+26 during its August/September 2005 normal (type I) outburst with an average flux F(5-100keV)~400mCrab. The search for cyclotron resonance scattering features (fundamental and harmonic) is one major focus of the paper. Our analysis is based on data from INTEGRAL and RXTE Target of Opportunity Observations performed during the outburst. The pulse period is determined. X-ray pulse profiles in different energy ranges are analyzed. The broad band INTEGRAL and RXTE pulse phase averaged X-ray spectra are studied. The evolution of the fundamental cyclotron line at different luminosities is analyzed. The pulse period P is measured to be 103.39315(5)s at MJD 53614.5137. Two absorption features are detected in the phase averaged spectra at E_1~45keV and E_2~100keV. These can be interpreted as the fundamental cyclotron resonance scattering feature and its first harmonic and therefore the magnetic field can be estimated to be B~4x10^12G., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

In this paper, we review the observational properties of two accreting X-ray pulsars, the persistent source 4U1907+09 and the transient V0332+53. Accreting X-ray pulsars are among the brightest sources in the X-ray sky and are frequently observed by Integral and other X-ray missions. Nevertheless they are still very enigmatic sources as fundamental questions on the X-ray production mechanism still remain largely unanswered. These questions are addressed by performing detailed temporal and spectral studies on several objects over a long time range. Of vital importance is the study of cyclotron lines as they provide the only direct link to the magnetic field of the pulsar. While some objects show cyclotron lines which are extremely stable with time and with pulse phase, in other objects the lines strongly depend on the pulse phase, the luminosity of the source, or both. Of special interest in any case are transient sources where it is possible to study the evolution of the cyclotron line and the source in general from the onset until the end of the outburst through a wide range of different luminosity states. Aims: We investigate the X-ray spectral and timing properties of the high mass X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 observed during its June-September 2006 giant (type II) outburst. Methods: The data analyzed in this work are from partly simultaneous observations with INTEGRAL Swift. The pulse period P and its temporal derivative P_dot are measured. X-ray pulse profiles in different energy ranges and time intervals are constructed. Pulse averaged X-ray spectra for different time intervals are studied. Results: We report a strong spin-up of the source during the outburst, comparable to that observed in 1985 during the previous giant outburst when the source was discovered. The value of P_dot is found to be linearly related to the X-ray luminosity of the source during the outburst. For the first time the hard X-ray (>25 keV) characteristics of the source during a type II outburst are studied. The X-ray pulse profiles apparently change with luminosity. The X-ray spectral continuum in the 3--120 keV energy range is modeled with an absorbed power law with an exponential cutoff around E ~26 keV. An iron emission line at ~6-7 keV is observed. The spectrum reveals some features between 10 and 20 keV which can be modeled either by a broad emission line at ~13-15 keV (a ``bump'') or by two absorption lines at ~10 and ~20 keV., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

The Galactic bulge region is a rich host of variable high-energy point sources. Since 2005, February 17 we are monitoring the source activity in this region about every three days with INTEGRAL. Thanks to the large field of view, the imaging capabilities and the sensitivity at hard X-rays, we are able to present for the first time a detailed homogeneous (hard) X-ray view of a sample of 76 sources in the Galactic bulge region. We describe the successful monitoring program and show the first results for a period of about one and a half year. We focus on the short (hour), medium (month) and long-term (year) variability in the 20-60 keV and 60-150 keV bands. When available, we discuss the simultaneous observations in the 3-10 keV and 10-25 keV bands. Per visibility season we detect 32/33 sources in the 20-60 keV band and 8/9 sources in the 60-150 keV band. On average, we find per visibility season one active bright (>~100 mCrab, 20-60 keV) black-hole candidate X-ray transient and three active weaker (<~25 mCrab, 20-60 keV) neutron star X-ray transients. Most of the time a clear anti-correlation can be seen between the soft and hard X-ray emission in some of the X-ray bursters. Hard X-ray flares or outbursts in X-ray bursters, which have a duration of the order of weeks, are accompanied by soft X-ray drops. On the other hand, hard X-ray drops can be accompanied by soft X-ray flares/outbursts. We found a number of new sources, IGR J17354-3255, IGR 17453-2853, IGR J17454-2703, IGR J17456-2901b, IGR J17536-2339, and IGR J17541-2252. We report here on some of the high-energy properties of these sources. In this paper we present the results of the analysis of the INTEGRAL data for the black hole transient GRO J1655-40. The observations consist of four ToO (100 ks each) observations's AO-3 spread from February to April of 2005. We present here the preliminary spectral analysis of this source between 5 and 200 keV. Also, some comments of the light curves obtained during this period are shown., Comment: This papers includes 4 figures (in PNG format). We study the spectrum of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) in energy range $\sim$5-100 keV. Early in 2006 the INTEGRAL observatory performed a series of four 30ksec observations with the Earth disk crossing the field of view of the instruments. The modulation of the aperture flux due to occultation of extragalactic objects by the Earth disk was used to obtain the spectrum of the Cosmic X-ray Background(CXB). Various sources of contamination were evaluated, including compact sources, Galactic Ridge emission, CXB reflection by the Earth atmosphere, cosmic ray induced emission by the Earth atmosphere and the Earth auroral emission. The spectrum of the cosmic X-ray background in the energy band 5-100 keV is obtained. The shape of the spectrum is consistent with that obtained previously by the HEAO-1 observatory, while the normalization is $\sim$10% higher. This difference in normalization can (at least partly) be traced to the different assumptions on the absolute flux from the Crab Nebulae. The increase relative to the earlier adopted value of the absolute flux of the CXB near the energy of maximum luminosity (20-50 keV) has direct implications for the energy release of supermassive black holes in the Universe and their growth at the epoch of the CXB origin., Comment: A&A, 14 pages, 12 figues

The Galactic Bulge region is a rich host of variable high-energy point sources. These sources include bright and relatively faint X-ray transients, X-ray bursters, persistent neutron star and black-hole candidate binaries, X-ray pulsars, etc.. We have a program to monitor the Galactic Bulge region regularly and frequently with the gamma-ray observatory INTEGRAL. As a service to the scientific community the high-energy light curves of all the active sources as well as images of the region are made available through the WWW. We have monitored a Type II outburst of the Be/X-ray binary MXB 0656-072 in a series of pointed RXTE observations during October through December 2003. The source spectrum shows a cyclotron resonance scattering feature at 32.8 +/- 0.5 keV, corresponding to a magnetic field strength of (3.67 +/- 0.06) x 10^12 G and is stable through the outburst and over the pulsar spin phase. The pulsar, with an average pulse period of 160.4 +/- 0.4 s, shows a spin-up of 0.45 s over the duration of the outburst. From optical data, the source distance is estimated to be 3.9 +/- 0.1 kpc and this is used to estimate the X-ray luminosity and a theoretical prediction of the pulsar spin-up during the outburst., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The Be/X-ray binary 3A 0535+262 has the highest magnetic field determined by cyclotron line studies of all accreting X-ray pulsars, despite an open debate if the fundamental line was rather at ~50 or above 100 keV as observed by different instruments in past outbursts. The source went into quiescence for more than ten years since its last outbursts in 1994. Observing during a `normal' outburst August/September 2005 with Integral and RXTE we find a strong cyclotron line feature at ~45 keV and have for the first time since 1975 determined the low energy pulse profile., Comment: 2 pages, 3 figures. We present an analysis of the 2-150 keV spectrum of the transient X-ray pulsar V0332+53 taken with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in 2004 December. We report on the detection of three cyclotron resonance features at 27, 51, and 74 keV in the phase-averaged data, corresponding to a polar magnetic field of 2.7 x 10^12 G. After 4U0115+63, this makes V0332+53 the second accreting neutron star in which more than two cyclotron lines have been detected; this has now also been confirmed by INTEGRAL. We present the spectral and temporal analysis of the 2004/2005 outburst of the transient X-ray pulsar V0332+53 as observed with Integral. After the discovery of the third cyclotron line in phase averaged spectra (Kreykenbohm et al 2005, Pottschmidt et al 2005), detailed pulse phase spectroscopy revealed remarkably little variability of the cyclotron lines through the 4.4s X-ray pulse (Pottschmidt et al 2005). During the decline of the outburst, the flux was observed to decay exponentially until 2005 Feb 10 and linearly thereafter. The spectrum was found to become harder with time, while the folding energy remained constant. The energy of the fundamental cyclotron line increased with time from 26.5kev in the RXTE observation up to 29.5kev in the last Integral one indicating that the emission region is moving closer to the surface of the neutron star. The High Mass X-ray Binary Pulsar SAXJ2103.5+4545 has been observed with INTEGRAL several times during the last outburst in 2002-2004. We report a comprehensive study of all INTEGRAL observations, allowing a study of the pulse period evolution during the recent outburst. We measured a very rapid spin-up episode, lasting 130days, which decreased the pulse period by 1.8s. The spin-up rate, pdot=-1.5e-7 s/s, is the largest ever measured for SAXJ2103.5+4545, and it is among the fastest for an accreting pulsar. The pulse profile shows evidence for temporal variability, apparently not related to the source flux or to the orbital phase. The X-ray spectrum is hard and there is significant emission up to 150keV. On March 2003, IBIS, the gamma-ray imager on board the INTEGRAL satellite, detected an outburst from a new source, IGR J17464-3213, that turned out to be a HEAO-1 transient, H1743-322. In this paper we report on the high energy behaviour of this BHC studied with the three main instruments onboard INTEGRAL. The data, collected with unprecedented sensitivity in the hard X-Ray range, show a quite hard Comptonised emission from 3 keV up to 150 keV during the rising part of the source outburst, with no thermal emission detectable. A few days later, a prominent soft disk multicolour component appears, with the hard tail luminosity almost unchanged: 10-9 erg*cm-2*s-1. Two months later, during a second monitoring campaign near the end of the outburst, the observed disk component was unchanged. Conversely, the Comptonised emission from the central-hot part of the disk reduced by a factor of 10. We report first results of a multifrequency campaign from radio to hard X-ray energies of the prominent gamma-ray blazar 3C 279 during the first year of the INTEGRAL mission. The variable blazar was found at a low activity level, but was detected by all participating instruments. Subsequently a multifrequency spectrum could be compiled. The individual measurements as well as the compiled multifrequency spectrum are presented. The millisecond pulsar PSR B1259-63 and the Be star SS2883 are situated in a highly eccentric binary system, with orbital period ~3.4 years. We report on hard X-ray observations obtained with the INTEGRAL satellite close to the 2004 periastron passage. These are the first imaging observations of this system in the hard X-ray range (>20 keV) and allow the emission of PSR B1259-63 to be separated from that of a nearby unidentified variable source which may have contaminated previous hard X-ray observations of this system. Using the IBIS/ISGRI instrument we measured a flux of ~2--6 mCrab in the 20--200 keV range, with a power law spectrum of photon index of 1.3 +/- 0.5., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters. We present pulse phase resolved spectra of the hypergiant high mass X-ray binary GX 301-2. We observed the source in 2001 October with RXTE continuously for a total on-source time of almost 200ksec. We model the continuum with both, a heavily absorbed partial covering model and a reflection model. In either case we find that the well known cyclotron resonant scattering feature (CRSF) at 35keV is - although present at all pulse phases - strongly variable over the pulse: the line position varies by 25% from 30keV in the fall of the secondary pulse to 38keV in the fall of the main pulse where it is deepest. The line variability implies that we are seeing regions of magnetic field strength varying between 3.4 10^12G and 4.2 10^12G., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

Observations performed by INTEGRAL are typically subdivided in kilo-seconds individual pointings. A mosaic software has been developed at the Danish Space Research Institute to combine sky images from different pointings with significantly improved capabilities compared to the available software. This software takes account of the specifics of the JEM-X instrument, such as the vignetting effects due to its collimator and its mask structure. It calculates the weighted contribution of each pixel from each input sky images to be added in order to maximise the signal/noise ratio of each pixel in the combined sky image. We present observations of the High Mass X-ray Binary GX 301-2 taken during the Galactic Plane Scan (GPS) with Integral following our RXTE observations (Kreykenbohm et al. 2004). The optical companion of GX 301-2 is the B1Ia+ hypergiant Wray 977 with a luminosity of 1.3 x 10^6 Lsun and a mass of ~48 Msun making the system one of the most massive X-ray binaries known. The system was observed 24 times during the GPS thus covering many orbital phases including the pre-periastron flare. The source is clearly detected in all Integral instruments in most pointings. The derived X-ray light curves show strong variability on all timescales. Depending on the orbital phase of the pointings, the luminosity changes by factor of more than 10 during the pre-periastron flare compared to other pointings. The wind-accreting X-ray binary pulsar and cyclotron line source Vela X-1 has been observed extensively during INTEGRAL Core Program observations of the Vela region in June-July and November-December 2003. In the latter set of observations the source showed intense flaring -- see also Staubert et al. (2004), these proceedings. We present early results on time averaged and time resolved spectra, of both epochs of observations. A cyclotron line feature at ~53 keV is clearly detected in the INTEGRAL spectra and its broad shape is resolved in SPI spectra. The remaining issues in the calibration of the instruments do not allow to resolve the question of the disputed line feature at 20-25 keV. During the first main flare the average luminosity increases by a factor of \~10, but the spectral shape remains very similar, except for a moderate softening., Comment: Accepted for proceedings of 5th INTEGRAL Workshop

The imaging instruments on board INTEGRAL have wide fields of view and high time resolution. Therefore, they are ideal instruments to search for pulsating sources and/or transient events. We are systematically searching for pulsations and transient events from known and serendipitous sources in the Galactic Plane Scan (GPS) and Galactic Center Deep Exposure (GCDE) core program data. We analyze the standard pipe-line data using ISDC Off-line Science Analysis (OSA) system, so that our results are reproducible by general guest users. We present XMM-Newton observations of the recurrent Be/X-ray transient A0538-66, situated in the Large Magellanic Cloud, in the quiescent state. Despite a very low luminosity state of (5-8)E33 ergs/s in the range 0.3-10 keV, the source is clearly detected up to ~8 keV. and can be fitted using either a power law with photon index alpha=1.9+-0.3 or a bremsstrahlung spectrum with kT=3.9+3.9-1.7 keV. The spectral analysis confirms that the off-state spectrum is hard without requiring any soft component, contrary to the majority of neutron stars observed in quiescence up to now., Comment: Accepted for proceedings of 5th INTEGRAL Workshop

The status of the INTEGRAL cross-calibration is presented for a standard X-ray astronomy source, the Crab Nebula, as well as for some weaker sources. The INTEGRAL Science Data Centre (ISDC) routinely monitors the Near Real Time data (NRT) from the INTEGRAL satellite. A first scientific analysis is made in order to check for the detection of new, transient or highly variable sources in the data. Of primary importance for this work is the Interactive Quick Look Analysis (IQLA), which produces JEM-X and ISGRI images and monitors them for interesting astrophysical events, Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. We present the preliminary results of the INTEGRAL survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The observations have been carried out in January 2003 (about 10^6 s) and January 2004 (about 4x10^5 s). Here we concentrate on the bright sources LMC X-1, LMC X-2, LMC X-3 located in our satellite galaxy, and on the serendipitous detections of the Galactic Low Mass X-ray Binary EXO 0748-676 and of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 04575-7537., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures. We present the international collaboration MINE (Multi-lambda Integral NEtwork) aimed at conducting multi-wavelength observations of X-ray binaries and microquasars simultaneously with the INTEGRAL gamma-ray satellite. We will focus on the 2003 March-April campaign of observations of the peculiar microquasar GRS 1915+105 gathering radio, IR and X-ray data. The source was observed 3 times in the plateau state, before and after a major radio and X-ray flare. It showed strong steady optically thick radio emission corresponding to powerful compact jets resolved in the radio images, bright near-infrared emission, a strong QPO at 2.5 Hz in the X-rays and a power law dominated spectrum without cutoff in the 3-300 keV range. We report on the preliminary timing and spectral analysis of the High Mass X-ray Binary Pulsar SAXJ2103.5+4545 as observed with INTEGRAL during the Galactic Pla n Scan of the Core Program. The source shows a hard spectrum, being detected up to 100 keV. A great deal of emphasis on timing in the RXTE era has been on pushing toward higher and higher frequency phenomena, particularly kHz QPOs. However, the large areas of the RXTE pointed instruments provide another capability which is key for the understanding of accreting X-ray pulsars -- the ability to accumulate high quality spectra in a limited observing time. For the accreting X-ray pulsars, with their relatively modest spin frequencies, this translates into an ability to study broad band spectra as a function of pulse phase. This is a critical tool, as pulsar spectra are strong functions of the geometry of the "accretion mound" and the observers' viewing angle to the ~10^12 G magnetic field. In particular, the appearance of "cyclotron lines" is sensitively dependent on the viewing geometry, which must change with the rotation of the star. These spectral features, seen in only a handful of objects, are quite important, as they give us our only direct measure of neutron star magnetic fields. Furthermore, they carry a great deal of information as to the geometry and physical conditions in the accretion mound. In this paper, we review the status of cyclotron line studies with the RXTE. Background and determination of its components for the JEM-X X-ray telescope on INTEGRAL are discussed. A part of the first background observations by JEM-X are analysed and results are compared to predictions. The observations are based on extensive imaging of background near the Crab Nebula on revolution 41 of INTEGRAL. Total observing time used for the analysis was 216502 s, with the average of 25 cps of background for each of the two JEM-X telescopes. JEM-X1 showed slightly higher average background intensity than JEM-X2. The detectors were stable during the long exposures, and weak orbital phase dependence in the background outside radiation belts was observed. The analysis yielded an average of 5 cps for the diffuse background, and 20 cps for the instrument background. The instrument background was found highly dependent on position, both for spectral shape and intensity. Diffuse background was enhanced in the central area of a detector, and it decreased radially towards the edge, with a clear vignetting effect for both JEM-X units. The instrument background was weakest in the central area of a detector and showed a steep increase at the very edges of both JEM-X detectors, with significant difference in spatial signatures between JEM-X units. We present first results from contemporaneous observations of Cygnus X-1 with INTEGRAL and RXTE, made during INTEGRAL's performance verification phase in 2002 November and December. Consistent with earlier results, the 3-250 keV data are well described by Comptonization spectra from a Compton corona with a temperature of kT~50-90 keV and an optical depth of tau~1.0-1.3 plus reflection from a cold or mildly ionized slab with a covering factor of Omega/2pi~0.2-0.3. A soft excess below 10 keV, interpreted as emission from the accretion disk, is seen to decrease during the 1.5 months spanned by our observations. Our results indicate a remarkable consistency among the independently calibrated detectors, with the remaining issues being mainly related to the flux calibration of INTEGRAL., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. We present the result of multi-wavelength observations of the microquasar GRS 1915+105 in a plateau state with a luminosity of ~7.5x10^{38) erg s-1 (~40% L_Edd), conducted simultaneously with the INTEGRAL and RXTE satellites, the ESO/NTT, the Ryle Telescope, the NRAO VLA and VLBA, in 2003 April 2-3. For the first time were observed concurrently in GRS 1915+105 all of the following properties: a strong steady optically thick radio emission corresponding to a powerful compact jet resolved with the VLBA, bright near-IR emission, a strong QPO at 2.5 Hz in the X-rays and a power law dominated spectrum without any cutoff in the 3-400 keV range., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures (4 colour figures), accepted by A&A Letters

We present the first INTEGRAL results on Cyg X-3 from the PV phase observations of the Cygnus region. The source was clearly detected by the JEM-X, ISGRI and SPI detectors. The INTEGRAL observations were supported by simultaneous pointed RXTE observations. Their lightcurves folded over the 4.8 hour binary period are compatible with the mean RXTE/ASM and CGRO/BATSE light curves. We fit our broad band X-ray/Gamma-ray spectra with a physical model, which represents the first such published model for Cyg X-3. The INTEGRAL Science Data Centre (ISDC) provides the INTEGRAL data and means to analyse them to the scientific community. The ISDC runs a gamma ray burst alert system that provides the position of gamma ray bursts on the sky within seconds to the community. It operates a quick-look analysis of the data within few hours that detects new and unexpected sources as well as it monitors the instruments. The ISDC processes the data through a standard analysis the results of which are provided to the observers together with their data., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. Scans of the Galactic plane performed at regular intervals constitute a key element of the guaranteed time observations of the INTEGRAL observing programme. These scans are done for two reasons: frequent monitoring of the Galactic plane in order to detect transient sources, and time resolved mapping of the Galactic plane in continuum and diffuse line emission.
