We report on--off pointed MAMBO observations at 1.2 mm of 61 Spitzer-selected star-forming galaxies from the SWIRE survey. The sources are selected on the basis of bright 24um fluxes (f_24um>0.4mJy) and of stellar dominated near-infrared spectral energy distributions in order to favor z~2 starburst galaxies. The average 1.2mm flux for the whole sample is 1.5+/-0.2 mJy. Our analysis focuses on 29 sources in the Lockman Hole field where the average 1.2mm flux (1.9+/-0.3 mJy) is higher than in other fields (1.1+/-0.2 mJy). The analysis of the sources multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions indicates that they are starburst galaxies with far-infrared luminosities ~10^12-10^13.3 Lsun, and stellar masses of ~0.2-6 x10^11 M_sun. Compared to sub-millimeter selected galaxies (SMGs), the SWIRE-MAMBO sources are among those with the largest 24um/millimeter flux ratios. The origin of such large ratios is investigated by comparing the average mid-infrared spectra and the stacked far-infrared spectral energy distributions of the SWIRE-MAMBO sources and of SMGs. The mid-infrared spectra exhibit strong PAH features, and a warm dust continuum. The warm dust continuum contributes to ~34% of the mid-infrared emission, and is likely associated with an AGN component. This constribution is consistent with what is found in SMGs. The large 24um/1.2mm flux ratios are thus not due to AGN emission, but rather to enhanced PAH emission compared to SMGs. The analysis of the stacked far-infrared fluxes yields warmer dust temperatures than typically observed in SMGs. Our selection favors warm ultra-luminous infrared sources at high-z, a class of objects that is rarely found in SMG samples. The Molecular Hydrogen Explorer, H2EX, was proposed in response to the ESA 2015 - 2025 Cosmic Vision Call as a medium class space mission with NASA and CSA participations. The mission, conceived to understand the formation of galaxies, stars and planets from molecular hydrogen, is designed to observe the first rotational lines of the H2 molecule (28.2, 17.0, 12.3 and 9.7 micron) over a wide field, and at high spectral resolution. H2EX can provide an inventory of warm (> 100 K) molecular gas in a broad variety of objects, including nearby young star clusters, galactic molecular clouds, active galactic nuclei, local and distant galaxies. The rich array of molecular, atomic and ionic lines, as well as solid state features available in the 8 to 29 micron spectral range brings additional science dimensions to H2EX. We present the optical and mechanical design of the H2EX payload based on an innovative Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (IFTS) fed by a 1.2m telescope. The 20'x20' field of view is imaged on two 1024x1024 Si:As detectors. The maximum resolution of 0.032 cm^-1 (FWHM) means a velocity resolution of 10 km s^-1 for the 0-0 S(3) line at 9.7 micron. This instrument offers the large field of view necessary to survey extended emission in the Galaxy and local Universe galaxies as well as to perform unbiased extragalactic and circumstellar disks surveys. The high spectral resolution makes H2EX uniquely suited to study the dynamics of H2 in all these environments. The mission plan is made of seven wide-field spectro-imaging legacy programs, from the cosmic web to galactic young star clusters, within a nominal two years mission. We present observations aimed at exploring both the nature of Lya emitting nebulae (Lya blobs) at z=2.38 and the way they trace large scale structure (LSS), by exploring their proximity to maximum starbursts through submillimeter emission. Our most important objectives are to make a census of associated submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), check their properties, and look for a possible overdensity in the protocluster J2142-4426 at z=2.38. We used the newly commissioned Large APEX Bolometer Camera (LABoCa) on the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope, in its Science Verification phase, to carry out a deep 10'x10' map at 870 micron, and we performed multiple checks of the quality of data processing and source extraction. Our map, the first published deep image, confirms the capabilities of APEX/LABoCa as the most efficient current equipment for wide and deep submm mapping. Twenty-two sources were securely extracted with 870 micron flux densities in the range 3-21 mJy, rms noise 0.8-2.4 mJy, and far-IR luminosities probably in the range ~5-20 x 10(12) Lo. Only one of the four 50 kpc-extended Lya blobs has a secure 870 micron counterpart. The 870 micron source counts in the whole area are marginally higher than in the SHADES SCUBA survey, with a possible over-density around this blob. The majority of the 3.6-24 micron SEDs of the submillimeter sources indicate they are starburst dominated, with redshifts mostly >2. The coming Planck and Herschel missions will survey the sky at unprecedented angular scales and sensitivities. Simulations are needed for better interpretating the results of the surveys and for testing new methods of, e.g., source extraction and component separation. We present new simulations of the infrared and submillimeter cosmic background, including the correlation between infrared galaxies. The simulations were used to quantify the source-detection thresholds for Herschel/SPIRE and Planck/HFI, as well as to study the detectability of the cosmic infrared background correlated fluctuations. The simulations are based on an empirical model of IR galaxy evolution. For the correlations, we only included the linear clustering, assuming that infrared galaxies are biased tracers of the dark-matter fluctuation density field. We used the simulations with different bias parameters to predict the confusion noise for Herschel/SPIRE and Planck/HFI and the completeness levels. We also discuss the detectability of the linear clustering in Planck/HFI power spectra, including the foreground and backgrounds components. We present the observed correlations between rest-frame 8, 24, 70 and 160 um monochromatic luminosities and measured total infrared luminosities L_IR of galaxies detected by Spitzer. Our sample consists of 372 star-forming galaxies with individual detections and flux measurements at 8, 24, 70 and 160 um. We have spectroscopic redshifts for 93% of these sources, and accurate photometric redshifts for the remainder. We also used a stacking analysis to measure the IR fluxes of fainter sources at higher redshifts. We show that the monochromatic mid and far-infrared luminosities are strongly correlated with the total infrared luminosity and our stacking analysis confirms that these correlations also hold at higher redshifts. We provide relations between monochromatic luminosities and total infrared luminosities L_IR that should be reliable up to z~2 (z~1.1) for ULIRGs (LIRGs). In particular, we can predict L_IR with accuracies of 37% and 54% from the 8 and 24 um fluxes, while the best tracer is the 70 um flux. Combining bands leads to slightly more accurate estimates. For example, combining the 8 and 24 um luminosities predicts L_IR with an accuracy of 34%. Our results are generally compatible with previous studies, and the small changes are probably due to differences in the sample selection criteria. We can rule out strong evolution in dust properties with redshift up to z~1. Finally, we show that infrared and sub-millimeter observations are complementary means of building complete samples of star-forming galaxies, with the former being more sensitive for z<~2 and the latter at higher z>~2., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables. We report the detection of correlated anisotropies in the Cosmic Far-Infrared Background at 160 microns. We measure the power spectrum in the Spitzer/SWIRE Lockman Hole field. It reveals unambiguously a strong excess above cirrus and Poisson contributions, at spatial scales between 5 and 30 arcminutes, interpreted as the signature of infrared galaxy clustering. Using our model of infrared galaxy evolution we derive a linear bias b=1.74 \pm 0.16. It is a factor 2 higher than the bias measured for the local IRAS galaxies. Our model indicates that galaxies dominating the 160 microns correlated anisotropies are at z~1. This implies that infrared galaxies at high redshifts are biased tracers of mass, unlike in the local Universe., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press

The description of the statistical properties of dust emission gives important constraints on the physics of the interstellar medium but it is also a useful way to estimate the contamination of diffuse interstellar emission in the cases where it is considered a nuisance. The main goals of this analysis of the power spectrum and non-Gaussian properties of 100 micron dust emission are 1) to estimate the power spectrum of interstellar matter density in three dimensions, 2) to review and extend previous estimates of the cirrus noise due to dust emission and 3) to produce simulated dust emission maps that reproduce the observed statistical properties. The main results are the following. 1) The cirrus noise level as a function of brightness has been previously overestimated. It is found to be proportional to instead of ^1.5, where is the local average brightness at 100 micron. This scaling is in accordance with the fact that the brightness fluctuation level observed at a given angular scale on the sky is the sum of fluctuations of increasing amplitude with distance on the line of sight. 2) The spectral index of dust emission at scales between 5 arcmin and 12.5 degrees is =-2.9 on average but shows significant variations over the sky. Bright regions have systematically steeper power spectra than diffuse regions. 3) The skewness and kurtosis of brightness fluctuations is high, indicative of strong non-Gaussianity. 4) Based on our characterization of the 100 micron power spectrum we provide a prescription of the cirrus confusion noise as a function of wavelength and scale. 5) Finally we present a method based on a modification of Gaussian random fields to produce simulations of dust maps which reproduce the power spectrum and non-Gaussian properties of interstellar dust emission., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures. We present the rest-frame 8 micron luminosity function (LF) at redshifts z=1 and ~2, computed from Spitzer 24 micron-selected galaxies in the GOODS fields over an area of 291 sq. arcmin. Using classification criteria based on X-ray data and IRAC colours, we identify the AGN in our sample. The rest-frame 8 micron LF for star-forming galaxies at redshifts z=1 and ~2 have the same shape as at z~0, but with a strong positive luminosity evolution. The number density of star-forming galaxies with log_{10}(nu L_nu(8 micron))>11 increases by a factor >250 from redshift z~0 to 1, and is basically the same at z=1 and ~2. The resulting rest-frame 8 micron luminosity densities associated with star formation at z=1 and ~2 are more than four and two times larger than at z~0, respectively. We also compute the total rest-frame 8 micron LF for star-forming galaxies and AGN at z~2 and show that AGN dominate its bright end, which is well-described by a power-law. We investigate the role of the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) and ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) phases in the evolution of Ks-selected galaxies and, in particular, Extremely Red Galaxies (ERGs). With this aim, we compare the properties of a sample of 2905 Ks<21.5 (Vega mag) galaxies in the GOODS/CDFS with the sub-sample of those 696 sources which are detected at 24 microns. We find that LIRGs constitute 30% of the galaxies with stellar mass M>1x10^{11} Msun assembled at redshift z=0.5. A minimum of 65% of the galaxies with M>2.5x10^{11} Msun at z~2-3 are ULIRGs at those redshifts. 60% of the ULIRGs in our sample have the characteristic colours of ERGs. Conversely, 40% of the ERGs with stellar mass M>1.3x10^{11} Msun at 1.51x10^{11} Msun) galaxies present in the Universe at a given time, this fraction becomes very significant (>50%) at redshifts z>~2., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 9 pages, 6 figures

We present the results of our most recent works on Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron galaxies. Through a multiwavelength analysis, we study different properties (redshifts, luminosities, stellar masses) characterising the sources which produce the bulk of the mid-IR background. From a comparative study with the total population of Ks-selected galaxies, we determine that 24 micron sources account for an important fraction of the most massive galaxies present at different redshifts. On the other hand, we determine that 24 micron galaxies also produce most of the energy contained in the far-IR cosmic background at 70 and 160 microns. Furthermore, we are able to set tight constraints on the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) spectral energy distribution (SED). Archeops is a balloon--borne experiment widely inspired by the Planck satellite and by its High Frequency Instrument (HFI). It is mainly dedicated to measure the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies at high angular resolution (about 12 arcminutes) over a large fraction of the sky (around 30 %) in the millimetre and submillimetre range at 143, 217, 353 and 545 GHz. Further, the Archeops 353 GHz channel consists of three pairs of polarized sensitive bolometers designed to detect the polarized diffuse emission of Galactic dust. We present in this paper the update of the instrumental setup as well as the inflight performance for the last Archeops flight campaign in February 2002 from Kiruna (Sweden). We also describe the processing and analysis of the Archeops time ordered data for that campaign which lead to the measurement of the CMB anisotropies power spectrum in the multipole range l=10-700 (Benoit et al. 2003a, Tristram et al. 2005) and to the first measurement of the dust polarized emission at large angular scales and its polarized. We present maps of 30 % of the sky of the Galactic emission, including the Galactic plane, in the four Archeops channels at 143, 217, 353 and 545 GHz and maps of the CMB anisotropies at 143 and 217 GHz. Galaxies selected at 170um by the ISO FIRBACK survey represent the brightest \~10% of the Cosmic Infrared Background. Examining their nature in detail is therefore crucial for constraining models of galaxy evolution. Here we combine Spitzer archival data with previous near-IR, far-IR, and sub-mm observations of a representative sample of 22 FIRBACK galaxies spanning three orders of magnitude in infrared luminosity. We fit a flexible, multi-component, empirical SED model of star-forming galaxies designed to model the entire ~1-1000um wavelength range. The fits are performed with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach, allowing for meaningful uncertainties to be derived. This approach also highlights degeneracies such as between Td and beta, which we discuss in detail. From these fits and standard relations we derive: L_IR, L_PAH, SFR, tau_V, M_star, M_dust, Td, and beta. We look at a variety of correlations between these and combinations thereof in order to examine the physical nature of these galaxies. Our conclusions are supplemented by morphological examination of the sources, and comparison with local samples. We find the bulk of our sample to be consistent with fairly standard size and mass disk galaxies with somewhat enhanced star-formation relative to local spirals, but likely not bona fide starbursts. A few higher-z LIGs and ULIGs are also present, but contrary to expectation, they are weak mid-IR emitters and overall are consistent with star-formation over an extended cold region rather than concentrated in the nuclear regions. We present deep Ks<21.5 (Vega) identifications, redshifts and stellar masses for most of the sources composing the bulk of the 24 micron background in the GOODS/CDFS. Our identified sample consists of 747 Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron objects, and includes ~94% of all the 24 micron sources in the GOODS-South field which have fluxes Snu(24)>83 microJy (the 80% completeness limit of the Spitzer/GTO 24 micron catalog). 36% of our galaxies have spectroscopic redshifts (mostly at z<1.5) and the remaining ones have photometric redshifts of very good quality, with a median of |dz|=|zspec-zphot|/(1+zspec)=0.02. We find that MIPS 24 micron galaxies span the redshift range z~0-4, and that a substantial fraction (28%) lie at high redshifts z>1.5. We determine the existence of a bump in the redshift distribution at z~1.9, indicating the presence of a significant population of galaxies with PAH emission at these redshifts. Massive (M>10^11 Msun) star-forming galaxies at redshifts 2500 Msun/yr), and some of them are able to construct a mass of 10^10-10^11 Msun in a single burst lifetime (~0.01-0.1 Gyr). At lower redshifts z<2, massive star-forming galaxies are also present, but appear to be building their stars on long timescales, either quiescently or in multiple modest burst-like episodes. At redshifts z~1-2, the ability of the burst-like mode to produce entire galaxies in a single event is limited to some lower (M<7x10^10 Msun) mass systems, and it is basically negligible at z<1. Our results support a scenario where star-formation activity is differential with assembled stellar mass and redshift, and where the relative importance of the burst-like mode proceeds in a down-sizing way from high to low redshifts. The discovery of the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) in 1996, together with recent cosmological surveys from the mid-infrared to the millimeter have revolutionized our view of star formation at high redshifts. It has become clear, in the last decade, that a population of galaxies that radiate most of their power in the far-infrared (the so-called ``infrared galaxies'') contributes an important part of the whole galaxy build-up in the Universe. Since 1996, detailed (and often painful) investigations of the high-redshift infrared galaxies have resulted in the spectacular progress reviewed in this paper. We analyze a sample of ~2600 MIPS/Spitzer 24mic sources brighter than ~80muJy and located in the Chandra Deep Field South to characterize the evolution of the comoving infrared (IR) energy density of the Universe up to z~1. Using published ancillary optical data we first obtain a nearly complete redshift determination for the 24mic objects associated with R<24 counterparts at z<1. We find that the 24mic population at 0.5 10^11 L_IR) are responsible for 70+/-15% of this energy density at z~1. Taking into account the contribution of the UV luminosity evolving as (1+z)^~2.5, we infer that these IR-luminous sources dominate the star-forming activity beyond z~0.7. We report on a search for the optical counterparts of 175 um - selected sources from the Far-Infrared Background (FIRBACK) survey in the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) N2 field. Applying a likelihood ratio technique to optical catalogues from the Isaac Newton Telescope - Wide Field Survey (INT--WFS), we found optical identifications for 33 out of 55 FIRBACK sources in this field. These were then reassessed in the light of associations with the ELAIS final catalogue for the the N2 field, to yield a final set of 31 associations. We have investigated the nature of this population through a comparison of their observed spectral energy distributions with predictions from radiative transfer models which simulate the emission from both cirrus and starburst components. We find the far-infrared sources to be 80 per cent star bursting galaxies with their starburst component at a high optical depth. The resulting SEDs were used to estimate far-infrared luminosities, star formation rates, dust temperatures and dust masses. The N2 FIRBACK population is found to consist of four suspected ULIRGs, a number of LIRGs and a population of low redshift quiescently star forming galaxies. We present a detailed study of the brighter ($> 4\sigma$ detections) sources in the 170$\mu$m FIRBACK northern N1 ISO survey, with the help of complementary data in the optical, radio, and mid-IR domain. For 82% of them, an optical galaxy counterpart is identified, either as the unique source of the IR emission, or as part of a multiple identification. With less than 15% of AGNs, these sources are essentially local, moderate starbursters with a dominating cold dust component. and represent a population of cold galaxies rather neglected up to now. Their colours do not match those of the far-IR Cosmic IR Background (CIB), to which they contribute less than 5%. The bulk of the sources contributing to the CIB is thus to be searched for in more distant galaxies, possibly counterparts of the fainter FIRBACK sources still under study. These bright, local, galaxies however play an important role in the evolution of IR galaxies: they dominate the number counts at high 170 $\mu$m fluxes, and represent half of the contribution at 250 mJy. Although not particularly massive (typically M*), they form more stars than a typical spiral galaxy and many are bulge dominated, that could represent the remnant of a former merger. We present the first measurement of temperature and polarization angular power spectra of the diffuse emission of Galactic dust at 353 GHz as seen by Archeops on 20% of the sky. The temperature angular power spectrum is compatible with that provided by the extrapolation to 353 GHz of IRAS and DIRBE maps using \cite{fds} model number 8. For Galactic latitudes $|b| \geq 5$ deg we report a 4 sigma detection of large scale ($3\leq \ell \leq 8$) temperature-polarization cross-correlation $(\ell+1)C_\ell^{TE}/2\pi = 76\pm 21 \mu\rm{K_{RJ}}^2$ and set upper limits to the $E$ and $B$ modes at $11 \mu\rm{K_{RJ}}^2$. For Galactic latitudes $|b| \geq 10$ deg, on the same angular scales, we report a 2 sigma detection of temperature-polarization cross-correlation $(\ell+1)C_\ell^{TE}/2\pi = 24\pm 13 \mu\rm{K_{RJ}}^2$. These results are then extrapolated to 100 GHz to estimate the contamination in CMB measurements by polarized diffuse Galactic dust emission. The $TE$ signal is then $1.7\pm0.5$ and $0.5\pm0.3 \mu\rm{K^2_{CMB}}$ for $|b| \geq 5$ and 10 deg. respectively. The upper limit on $E$ and $B$ becomes $0.2 \mu\rm{K^2_{CMB}} (2\sigma)$. If polarized dust emission at higher Galactic latitude cuts is similar to the one we report here, then dust polarized radiation will be a major foreground for determining the polarization power spectra of the CMB at high frequencies above 100 GHz., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, submitted to AA

We present improved results on the measurement of the angular power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies using the data from the last Archeops flight. This refined analysis is obtained by using the 6 most sensitive photometric pixels in the CMB bands centered at 143 and 217 GHz and 20% of the sky, mostly clear of foregrounds. Using two different cross-correlation methods, we obtain very similar results for the angular power spectrum. Consistency checks are performed to test the robustness of these results paying particular attention to the foreground contamination level which remains well below the statistical uncertainties. The multipole range from l=10 to l=700 is covered with 25 bins, confirming strong evidence for a plateau at large angular scales (the Sachs-Wolfe plateau) followed by two acoustic peaks centered around l=220 and l=550 respectively. These data provide an independent confirmation, obtained at different frequencies, of the WMAP first year results., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures, A&A

We present Spitzer IRAC (3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 um) and MIPS (24 um) observations of the SCUBA submillimeter sources and uJy VLA radio sources in a 5'x5' area in the Lockman Hole East region. Out of the ~40 SCUBA/VLA sources in the field, Spitzer counterparts were detected for nearly all except for the few low-weight SCUBA detections. We show that the majority (80-90%) of the detected sources are cold (i.e., starburst-like) infrared-luminous galaxies (L_{IR} > 10^{11} Lsun) at redshift 0.5

We derive galaxy source counts at 70 and 160 microns using the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) to map the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and other fields. At 70 microns, our observations extend upwards about 2 orders of magnitude in flux density from a threshold of 15 mJy, and at 160 microns they extend about an order of magnitude upward from 50 mJy. The counts are consistent with previous observations on the bright end. Significant evolution is detected at the faint end of the counts in both bands, by factors of 2-3 over no-evolution models. This evolution agrees well with models that indicate most ofthe faint galaxies lie at redshifts between 0.7 and 0.9. The new Spitzer data already resolve about 23% of the Cosmic Far Infrared Background at 70 microns and about 7% at 160 microns., Comment: Small modifications to match printed version. We use the source counts measured with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) at 24, 70, and 160 microns to determine the 5-sigma confusion limits due to extragalactic sources: 56 micro-Jy, 3.2 and 40 mJy at 24, 70 and 160 microns, respectively. We present an updated phenomenological galaxy evolution model to fit the Spitzer 24, 70 and 160 microns number counts as well as all the previous mid and far infrared observations. Only a minor change of the co-moving luminosity density distribution in the previous model (Lagache, Dole, Puget 2003), combined with a slight modification of the starburst template spectra mainly between 12 and 30 microns, are required to fit all the data available. We show that the peak in the MIPS 24 micron counts is dominated by galaxies with redshift between 1 and 2, with a non negligible contribution from the z>2 galaxies (~30% at S=0.2 mJy). The very close agreement between the model and number counts at 15 and 24 microns strikingly implies that (1) the PAHs (Policyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) features remain prominent in the redshift band 0.5 to 2.5 and (2) the IR energy output has to be dominated by ~3 10^11 Lo to ~3 10^12 Lo galaxies from redshift 0.5 to 2.5. Combining Spitzer with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) deep cosmological surveys gives for the first time an unbiased view of the infrared Universe from z=0 to z=2.5., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure. We present an analysis of dust grain emission in the diffuse interstellar medium of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This study is motivated by the availability of 170 microns ISOPHOT data covering a large part of the SMC, with a resolution enabling to disentangle the diffuse medium from the star forming regions. After data reduction and subtraction of Galactic foreground emission, we used the ISOPHOT data together with HiRes IRAS data and ATCA/Parkes combined HI column density maps to determine dust properties for the diffuse medium. We found a far infrared emissivity per hydrogen atom 30 times lower than the Solar Neighborhood value. The modeling of the spectral energy distribution of the dust, taking into account the enhanced interstellar radiation field, gives a similar conclusion for the smallest grains (PAHs and very small grains) emitting at shorter wavelength. Assuming Galactic dust composition in the SMC, this result implies a difference in the gas-to-dust ratio (GDR) 3 times larger than the difference in metallicity. This low depletion of heavy elements in dust could be specific of the diffuse ISM and not apply for the whole SMC dust if it results from efficient destruction of dust by supernovae explosions., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures. We present optical spectroscopy of the brightest 170 microns sources in the FIRBACK South Marano (FSM) field. The survey is 90% complete at the 4 sigma level. The spectra are compared with those of a reference sample of faint IRAS (60 microns selected) sources observed in the same conditions . The galaxies in both samples are characterized by a predominance of emission-line spectra and moderate IR luminosities (10E10.5 < L_IR < 10E12 L_Sun). The fraction of AGN's is low (about 15%) and the majority of sources are nearby (z<0.3), dusty, star forming galaxies, with moderate star formation rates (a few 10 solar masses per year). The infrared emission of the FSM galaxies shows also a colder spectral energy distribution than was expected. The galaxies in both samples (IRAS faint sources and FSM) are essentially undistinguishable with the available data, and seem to represent a population of closeby, cold, star forming galaxies rather neglected up to now. Although their contribution to the far-IR background seems to be low, they deserve a more detailed study on their own. The contribution of fainter, presumably more distant, galaxies to the far-IR background will be discussed when we will have completed the follow-up of the fainter part of this 170 microns survey. This paper proposes a short review on our knowledge on the dust emission in the diffuse sky from far-IR to the mm wavelength. We present the first determination of the Galactic polarized emission at 353 GHz by Archeops. The data were taken during the Arctic night of February 7, 2002 after the balloon--borne instrument was launched by CNES from the Swedish Esrange base near Kiruna. In addition to the 143 GHz and 217 GHz frequency bands dedicated to CMB studies, Archeops had one 545 GHz and six 353 GHz bolometers mounted in three polarization sensitive pairs that were used for Galactic foreground studies. We present maps of the I, Q, U Stokes parameters over 17% of the sky and with a 13 arcmin resolution at 353 GHz (850 microns). They show a significant Galactic large scale polarized emission coherent on the longitude ranges [100, 120] and [180, 200] deg. with a degree of polarization at the level of 4-5%, in agreement with expectations from starlight polarization measurements. Some regions in the Galactic plane (Gem OB1, Cassiopeia) show an even stronger degree of polarization in the range 10-20%. Those findings provide strong evidence for a powerful grain alignment mechanism throughout the interstellar medium and a coherent magnetic field coplanar to the Galactic plane. This magnetic field pervades even some dense clouds. Extrapolated to high Galactic latitude, these results indicate that interstellar dust polarized emission is the major foreground for PLANCK-HFI CMB polarization measurement., Comment: Submitted to Astron. & Astrophys., 14 pages, 12 Fig., 2 Tables

We present a new study of the high latitude galactic contributions to the millimeter sky, based on an analysis of the WMAP data combined with several templates of dust emission (DIRBE/COBE and FIRAS/COBE) and gas tracers (HI and Halpha). To study the IR to millimeter properties of the diffuse sky at high galactic latitude, we concentrate on the emission correlated with the HI gas. We compute the emission spectrum of the dust/free-free/synchrotron components associated with HI gas from low to large column densities. A significant residual WMAP emission over the free-free, synchrotron and the dust contribution is found from 3.2 to 9.1 mm. We show that this residual WMAP emission (normalised to 10$^{20}$ atoms/cm$^2$) (1) exhibits a constant spectrum from 3.2 to 9.1 mm and (2) significantly decreases in amplitude when N$_{HI}$ increases, contrary to the HI-normalised far-infrared emission which stays rather constant. It is thus very likely that the residual WMAP emission is not associated with the Large Grain dust component. The decrease in amplitude with increasing opacity ressembles in fact to the decrease of the transiently heated dust grain emission observed in dense interstellar clouds. This is supported by an observed decrease of the HI-normalised 60 microns emission with HI column densities. Although this result should be interpreted with care due to zodiacal residual contamination at 60 microns, it suggests that the WMAP excess emission is associated with the small transiently heated dust particles. On the possible models of this so-called ``anomalous microwave emission'' linked to the small dust particles are the spinning dust and the excess millimeter emission of the small grains, due to the cold temperatures they can reach between two successive impacts with photons., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. We present results from JCMT sub-mm observations of sources selected from the {\sl ISO} FIRBACK (Far-IR BACKground) survey, along with UKIRT near-IR imaging of a sub-sample. This gives valuable insight into the brightest $\sim$10% of galaxies which contribute to the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB). We estimate the photometric redshifts and luminosities of these sources by fitting their Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs). The data appear to show a bimodal galaxy distribution, with normal star-forming galaxies at $z\simeq0$, and a much more luminous population at $z\sim0.4$--0.9. These are similar to the ultraluminous infrared galaxies which are found to evolve rapidly with redshift in other surveys. The detectability threshold of FIRBACK biases the sample away from much higher redshift ($z\stackrel{>}{_{\sim}}1.5$) objects. Nevertheless, the handful of $z\sim0.5$ sources which we identify are likely to be the low-$z$ counterparts of the typically higher-$z$ sources found in blank field sub-mm observations. This sub-sample, being much more nearby than the average SCUBA galaxies, has the virtue of being relatively easy to study in the optical. We make predictions for the cosmological surveys to be conducted by MIPS/SIRTF at 24, 70 and 160 microns, for the GTO and the legacy programs, using the latest knowledge of the instrument. In addition to detector and cirrus confusion noise, we discuss in detail the derivation of the confusion noise due to extragalactic sources, that depends strongly on the shape of the source counts at a given wavelength and on the telescope and detector pixel sizes. We show that it is wise in general to compare the classical photometric criterion and the so called source density criterion to predict the confusion levels. We obtain, using the model of Lagache, Dole, & Puget (2002) limiting fluxes of 50 microJy, 3.2 mJy and 36 mJy at 24, 70 and 160 microns (resp.). We compute the redshift distributions of the detected sources at each wavelength, and show that they extend up to z ~ 2.7 at 24 microns and up to z ~ 2.5 at 70 and 160 microns, leading to resolve at most 69, 54 and 24% of the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) at 24, 70 and 160 microns (resp.). We estimate which galaxy populations will be used to derive the luminosity function evolution with redshift. We also give the redshift distributions of the unresolved sources in the FIR range, that dominates the fluctuations of the CIB, and a predicted power spectrum showing the feasibility of fluctuations (due to Poissonian & clustered source distributions) measurements. The main conclusion is that MIPS (and SIRTF in general) cosmological surveys will greatly improve our understanding of galaxy evolution by giving data with unprecedented accuracy in the mid and far infrared range., Comment: Accepted, ApJ. 11 figs, 6 tables, 43 pages. We analyze the cosmological constraints that Archeops places on adiabatic cold dark matter models with passive power-law initial fluctuations. Because its angular power spectrum has small bins in l and large l coverage down to COBE scales, Archeops provides a precise determination of the first acoustic peak in terms of position at multipole l_peak=220 +- 6, height and width. An analysis of Archeops data in combination with other CMB datasets constrains the baryon content of the Universe, Omega(b)h^2 = 0.022 (+0.003,-0.004), compatible with Big-Bang nucleosynthesis and with a similar accuracy. Using cosmological priors obtainedfrom recent non-CMB data leads to yet tighter constraints on the total density, e.g. Omega(tot)=1.00 (+0.03,-0.02) using the HST determination of the Hubble constant. An excellent absolute calibration consistency is found between Archeops and other CMB experiments, as well as with the previously quoted best fit model.The spectral index n is measured to be 1.04 (+0.10,-0.12) when the optical depth to reionization, tau, is allowed to vary as a free parameter, and 0.96 (+0.03,-0.04) when tau is fixed to zero, both in good agreement with inflation., Comment: A&A Letter, in press, 6 pages, 7 figures, see also http://www.archeops.org

We present a determination by the Archeops experiment of the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy in 16 bins over the multipole range l=15-350. Archeops was conceived as a precursor of the Planck HFI instrument by using the same optical design and the same technology for the detectors and their cooling. Archeops is a balloon-borne instrument consisting of a 1.5 m aperture diameter telescope and an array of 21 photometers maintained at ~100 mK that are operating in 4 frequency bands centered at 143, 217, 353 and 545 GHz. The data were taken during the Arctic night of February 7, 2002 after the instrument was launched by CNES from Esrange base (Sweden). The entire data cover ~ 30% of the sky.This first analysis was obtained with a small subset of the dataset using the most sensitive photometer in each CMB band (143 and 217 GHz) and 12.6% of the sky at galactic latitudes above 30 degrees where the foreground contamination is measured to be negligible. The large sky coverage and medium resolution (better than 15 arcminutes) provide for the first time a high signal-to-noise ratio determination of the power spectrum over angular scales that include both the first acoustic peak and scales probed by COBE/DMR. With a binning of Delta(l)=7 to 25 the error bars are dominated by sample variance for l below 200. To characterise the cosmological evolution of the sources contributing to the infrared extragalactic background, we have developped a phenomenological model that constrains in a simple way the galaxy luminosity function evolution with the redshift, and fits all the existing source counts and redshift distributions, Cosmic Infrared Background intensity and fluctuations observations, from the mid-infrared to the submillimetre range. The model is based on template spectra of starburst and normal galaxies, and on the local infrared luminosity function. Although the Cosmic Infrared Background can be modeled with very different luminosity functions as long as the radiation production with redshift is the right one, the number counts, and the anisotropies of the unresolved background, imply that the luminosity function must change dramatically with redshift, with a rapid evolution of the high-luminosity sources (L>3 10^{11} L_{\odot}) from z=0 to z=1 which then stay rather constant up to redshift 5. The derived evolution of the IR luminosity function may be linked to a bimodal star formation process, one associated with the quiescent and passive phase of the galaxy evolution and one associated with the starburst phase, trigerred by merging and interactions. The latter dominates the infrared and submillimetre ouput energy of the Universe. The model is intended as a convenient tool to plan further observations, as illustrated through predictions for Herschel, Planck and ALMA observations. Based on a power spectrum analysis of the IRAS ISSA maps, we present the first detection of the Cosmic far-Infrared Background (CIB) fluctuations at 60 and 100 microns. The power spectrum of 12 low cirrus emission regions is characterized by a power excess at spatial frequencies higher than k~0.02 arcmin^{-1}. Most of this excess is due to noise and to nearby point sources with a flux stronger than 1 Jy. But we show that when these contributions are carefully removed, there is still a power excess that is the signature of the CIB fluctuations. The power spectrum of the CIB at 60 and 100 microns is compatible with a Poissonian distribution, at spatial frequencies between 0.025 and 0.2 arcmin^{-1}. The fluctuation level is ~1.6x10^3 Jy^2/sr and ~5.8x10^3 Jy^2/sr at 60 and 100 microns respectively. The levels of the fluctuations are used in a larger framework, with other observationnal data, to constrain the evolution of IR galaxies (Lagache et al. 2002). The detections reported here, coupled with the level of the fluctuations at 170 microns, give strong constraints on the evolution of the IR luminosity function. The combined results at 60, 100 and 170 microns for the CIB and its fluctuations allows, on the CIB at 60 microns, to put a firm upper limit of 0.27 MJy/sr and to give an estimate of 0.18 MJy/sr., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics in press

We present Keck spectroscopy and UKIRT near-IR imaging observations of two 170micron-selected sources from the ISO-FIRBACK survey which have faint counterparts in the optical, and r-K~5. Both sources were expected to lie at z>1 based on their far-infrared, submillimeter and radio fluxes, assuming a similar spectral energy distribution to the local ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) Arp220. However, our spectroscopy indicates that the redshifts of these galaxies are z<1: z=0.91 for FN1-64 and z=0.45 for FN1-40. While the bolometric luminosities of both galaxies are similar to Arp220, it appears that the dust emission in these systems has a characteristic temperature of 30K much cooler than the ~50K seen in Arp220. Neither optical spectrum shows evidence of AGN activity. If these galaxies are characteristic of the optically faint FIRBACK population, then evolutionary models of the far-infrared background must include a substantial population of cold, luminous galaxies. These galaxies provide an important intermediate comparison between the local luminous IR galaxies, and the high redshift submillimeter-selected galaxies, for which there is very little information available., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figurs, ApJ in press

This paper discusses the Cosmic Background (CB) dipoles observations in the framework of the Planck mission. Dipoles observations can be used in three ways: (i) It gives a measurement of the peculiar velocity of our Galaxy which is an important observation in large scale structures formation model. (ii) Measuring the dipole can give unprecedent information on the monopole (that can be in some cases hard to obtain due to large foreground contaminations). (iii) The dipole can be an ideal absolute calibrator, easily detectable in cosmological experiments. Following the last two objectives, the main goal of the work presented here is twofold. First, we study the accuracy of the Planck-HFI calibration using the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) dipole measured by COBE as well as the Earth orbital motion dipole. We show that we can reach for HFI, a relative calibration between rings of about 1% and an absolute calibration better than 0.4% for the CMB channels (in the end, the absolute calibration will be limited by the uncertainties on the CMB temperature). We also show that Planck will be able to measure the CMB dipole direction at better than 1.7 arcmin and improve on the amplitude. Second, we investigate the detection of the Cosmic Far-Infrared Background (FIRB) dipole. Measuring this dipole could give a new and independent determination of the FIRB for which a direct determination is quite difficult due to Galactic dust emission contamination. We show that such a detection would require a Galactic dust emission removal at better than 1%, which will be very hard to achieve., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, submitted to A&A, uses aa.sty V5.1

We present an extinction map of the Polaris molecular cirrus cloud derived from star counts and compare it with the Schlegel et al. (1998) extinction map derived from the far--infrared dust opacity. We find that, within the Polaris cloud, the Schlegel et al. Av values are a factor 2 to 3 higher than the star count values. We propose that this discrepancy results from a difference in $\tau_{FIR}/ A_V$ between the diffuse atomic medium and the Polaris cloud. We use the difference in spectral energy distribution, warm for the diffuse atomic medium, cold for the Polaris cloud, to separate their respective contribution to the line of sight integrated infrared emission and find that the $\tau_{FIR}/ A_V$ of cold dust in Polaris is on average 4 times higher than the Schlegel et al. value for dust in atomic cirrus. This change in dust property could be interpreted by a growth of fluffy particles within low opacity molecular cirrus clouds such as Polaris. Our work suggests that variations in dust emissivity must be taken into account to estimate Av from dust emission wherever cold infrared emission is present (i.e. molecular clouds)., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted in A&A

We present the results of the first extensive mid-infrared (IR) imaging survey of the rho Ophiuchi embedded cluster, performed with the ISOCAM camera on board the ISO satellite. The main molecular cloud L1688, as well as L1689N and L1689S, have been completely surveyed for point sources at 6.7 and 14.3 micron. A total of 425 sources are detected including 16 Class I, 123 Class II, and 77 Class III young stellar objects (YSOs). Essentially all of the mid-IR sources coincide with near-IR sources, but a large proportion of them are recognized for the first time as YSOs. Our dual-wavelength survey allows us to identify essentially all the YSOs with IR excess in the embedded cluster down to Fnu ~ 10 - 15 mJy. It more than doubles the known population of Class II YSOs and represents the most complete census to date of newly formed stars in the rho Ophiuchi central region. The stellar luminosity function of the complete sample of Class II YSOs is derived with a good accuracy down to L= 0.03 Lsun. A modeling of this lumino- sity function, using available pre-main sequence tracks and plausible star for- mation histories, allows us to derive the mass distribution of the Class II YSOs which arguably reflects the IMF of the embedded cluster. We estimate that the IMF in rho Ophiuchi is well described by a two-component power law with a low- mass index of -0.35+/-0.25, a high-mass index of -1.7 (to be compared with the Salpeter value of -1.35), and a break occurring at M = 0.55+/-0.25 Msun. Very high energy gamma-ray data obtained by CAT and HEGRA from active galactic nucleus Mkn 501 are used to constrain the cosmic Mid-Infrared background. While the entire infrared and submillimeter spectrum shape based on models has been fixed and the density scaled as a whole in previous studies, recent measures on the low and high energy infrared background are extensively used in this paper. In this original approach, the infrared distribution is only varied in the unexplored 3.5-100 microns region. With conservative hypothesis on the intrinsic spectra of Mkn 501, an upper limit of 4.7 nW.m-2.sr-1 between 5 and 15 microns is derived, which is very close to the lower limit inferred from deep ISOCAM cosmological surveys at 15 microns. This result is shown to be independent of the exact density of the lambda < 3.5 microns and lambda > 100 microns infrared distribution within the uncertainties of the measurements. Moreover, the study presented here rules out a complete extragalactic origin for the 60 microns excess found by Finkbeiner et al. (2000)., Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A

The Cosmic Background due to the integrated radiation from galaxies over the whole life of the Universe is reviewed. We find that this background is well constrained by measurements. The total power in the background is in the range 60-93 nW/m2/sr. The data show the existence of a minimum separating the direct stellar radiation from the infrared part due to radiation reemitted by dust. This reemitted dust radiation is about 1-2.6 time the background power in the optical/near-IR thus much larger than the same ratio measured locally (30%). The far-infrared and submillimeter background is likely to be dominated by redshifted infrared galaxies. The long wavelength spectrum of the background being significantly flatter than the spectrum of these galaxies it strongly constrains the far-infrared radiation production rate history which must increase by a factor larger than 10 between the present time and a redshift 1 and then stays rather constant at higher redshift, contrary to the ultraviolet radiation production rate which decreases rapidly. Several models of galaxy evolution have been proposed to explain the submillimeter background. In this paper we do not propose a new model; we systematically explore the allowed range of evolution histories allowed by the data. If infrared galaxies are mostly powered by starbursts as indicated by recent observations, this infrared production history reflects the history of starbursts in the Universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

A Cosmic Far-InfraRed Background (CFIRB) has long been predicted that would traces the intial phases of galaxy formation. It has been first detected by Puget et al.(1996) using COBE data and has been later confirmed by several recent studies (Fixsen et al. 1998, Hauser et al. 1998, Lagache et al. 1999). We will present a new determination of the CFIRB that uses for the first time, in addition to COBE data, two independent gas tracers: the HI survey of Leiden/Dwingeloo (hartmann, 1998) and the WHAM H$_{\alpha}$ survey (Reynolds et al 1998). We will see that the CFIRB above 100 micron is now very well constrained. The next step is to see if we can detect its fluctuations. To search for the CFIRB fluctuations, we have used the FIRBACK observations. FIRBACK is a deep cosmological survey conducted at 170 micron with ISOPHOT (Dole et al., 2000). We show that the emission of unresolved extra-galactic sources clearly dominates, at arcminute scales, the background fluctuations in the lowest galactic emission regions. We have used the WHAM H_alpha survey and Leiden/Dwingeloo HI data to decompose the Far-infrared emission (from 100 to 1000 micron) at high Galactic latitude into components associated with the Warm Ionised Medium (WIM) and the Warm Neutral Medium (WNM). This decomposition is possible for the first time thanks to preliminary WHAM data that cover a significant fraction of the sky (about 10%). We confirm the first detection of dust emission from the WIM (Lagache et al. 1999) and show that the WIM dust temperature and emissivity are very similar to those in the WNM. The analysis suggests moreover that about 25% of the far-IR dust emission at high galactic latitude is uncorrelated with the HI gas. The decomposition again reveals a Cosmic Far-Infrared Background (CFIRB) which is determined for the first time from 100 to 1000 micron using two independant gas tracers., Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics, in press

The recently discovered Submillimeter Extragalactic Background (submm EB) has opened new perspectives on our understanding of galaxy evolution. We have used the Marano1 field observations with ISOPHOT at 170 $\mu$m to search for the Cosmic Far-InfraRed Background fluctuations. This field is part of the FIRBACK project (Puget et al., 1999a). For the first time, fluctuations due to unresolved extra-Galactic sources are isolated. The emission of such sources clearly dominates, at arcminute scales, the background fluctuations in the lowest Galactic emission regions. The study presented here is based on a power spectrum analysis which allow to statistically separate each of the background components. We present a new analysis of the far-IR emission at high Galactic latitude based on COBE and HI data. A decomposition of the Far-IR emission over the HI, H^+ and H_2 Galactic gas components and the Cosmic Far InfraRed Background (CFIRB) is described. For the first time the far-IR emission of dust associated with the Warm Ionised Medium (WIM) is evidenced. This component determined on about 25% of the sky is detected at a 10 sigma level in the [200, 350]micron band. The best representation of the WIM dust spectrum is obtained for a temperature of 29.1 K and an emissivity law $tau/N_H+=3.8 \pm 0.8 10^{-26} (\lambda/250\mic)^{-1} cm^2$. With a spectral index equal to 2, the emissivity law becomes $\tau/N_H^+= 1.0 \pm 0.2 10^{-25} (\lambda/250\mic)^{-2} cm^2$, with a temperature of 20 K, which is significantly higher than the temperature of dust associated with HI gas. The variation in the dust spectrum from the HI to the WIM component can be explained by only changing the upper cutoff of the Big Grain size distribution from 0.1 micron to 30 nm. The detection of IR emission of dust in the WIM significantly decreases the intensity of the CFIRB, especially around 200 micron which corresponds to the peak of energy.

Using DIRBE and FIRAS maps at high latitude ($|b|>10^{\circ}$) we derive the spatial distribution of the dust temperature associated with the diffuse cirrus and the dense molecular clouds. For a $\nu^2$ emissivity law, we find that the equilibrium dust temperature of the cirrus is about 17.5 K with only small variations over the high latitude sky. Comparison of the far Infrared DIRBE maps shows the presence of a colder emission component with a temperature around 15 K, assuming a $\nu^2$ emissivity law. The lowest values of the temperature found in the cold regions ($\sim 13 K$) are compatible with the results recently obtained for dense cores in star forming regions by the balloon-borne experiment SPM-PRONAOS (Ristorcelli et al., 1996, 1998, Serra et al., 1997). This cold component is in particular present in the direction of known molecular complexes with low star forming activity such as Taurus. The association between the cold component and molecular clouds is further demonstrated by the fact that all sky pixels with significant cold emission have an excess IR emission with respect to the high latitude IR/HI correlation. We have deduced a threshold value of the column density, $N_{HI} = 2.5 10^{20} H/cm^2$, below which cold dust is not detected within the FIRAS beam of $\sim 7\degr$. We have re-examined the problem of the existence of a very cold dust component ($T \sim 7 K$) by combining DIRBE maps of the cold emission with FIRAS spectra, corrected for the isotropic component found in Puget et al. (1996). The warm and cold component deduced from the analysis of DIRBE maps account for the Galactic FIRAS spectra with no need for a very cold component ($T\sim7$ K).

FIRBACK is a deep survey conducted with the ISOPHOT instrument aboard the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) at an effective wavelength of 175 $\mu$m. We present here results we have obtained on the first field, the so-called Marano1 which covers around 0.25 square degree. We find that the source density for objects with a flux above 200 mJy exceeds the counts expected for sources found in the IRAS deep surveys with a similar flux by about an order of magnitude. Such an excess was expected on the basis of the high far infrared background detected with the FIRAS and DIRBE instruments aboard the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE). These sources are likely to be redshifted infrared galaxies. The steep number counts indicate strong cosmological evolution in this population. The detected sources account for only 10 % of the cosmic IR background. The FIRBACK project is a collaboration of eight institutes aimed at using long wavelength surveys with ISO to uncover the nature of the Cosmic Far-Infrared Background. We have surveyed nearly 4 sq. deg. in three regions in the northern and southern hemispheres with the ISOPHOT instrument on ISO, using the 175 micron filter. As reported by Puget et al. (1998) and Reach et al. (these proceedings), the first 0.25 sq. deg. region studied in this programme contains many more 175 micron sources than expected. Initial reduction of the remaining survey areas appears to confirm this result. In this letter, we estimate how much starlight was absorbed by dust and released in the infrared during the formation of galaxies. New constraints are set on this so-far hidden history by the recent detection of the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) built up from the accumulated light of faint sources (and revisited here). By means of a semi-analytical model of hierarchical galaxy formation, we estimate the population of dust-enshrouded starburst galaxies fitting the CIB.
