Search

The multi-wavelength study of old (>100 Myr) radio pulsars holds the key to understanding the long-term evolution of neutron stars, including the advanced stages of neutron star cooling and the evolution of the magnetosphere. Optical/UV observations are particularly useful for such studies because they allow one to explore both thermal and non-thermal emission processes. In particular, studying the optical/UV emission constrains temperature of the bulk of the neutron star surface, too cold to be measured in X-ray observations.Aim of this work is to identify the optical counterpart of the very old (166 Myr) radio pulsar J0108-1431. We have re-analyzed our original VLT observations (Mignani et al. 2003), where a very faint object was tentatively detected close to the radio position, near the edge of a field galaxy. We found that the backward extrapolation of the PSR J0108-1431 proper motion recently measured by CHANDRA(Pavlov et al. 2008) nicely fits the position of this object. Based on that, we propose it as a viable candidate for the optical counterpart to PSR J0108-1431. The object fluxes (U =26.4+/-0.3; B =27.9; V >27.8) are consistent with a thermal spectrum with a brightness temperature of 9X10^4 K (for R = 13 km at a distance of 130 pc), emitted from the bulk of the neutron star surface. We observed the young energetic pulsar J1617-5055 with the Chandra ACIS detector for 60 ks. In addition to the pulsar, the X-ray images show a faint pulsar-wind nebula (PWN) seen up to ~1' from the pulsar. Deconvolution and reconstruction of the image reveal a brighter compact PWN component of ~1'' size, possibly with a jet-torus morphology. The PWN spectrum fits an absorbed power-law (PL) model with the photon index Gamma=1.5. The total PWN luminosity in the 0.5-8 keV band, L_{pwn}=3.2\times10^{33} ergs s^{-1} for d=6.5 kpc, is a fraction of 2\times 10^{-4} of the pulsar's spin-down power and a fraction of 0.2 of the pulsar's X-ray luminosity, which is a factor of 20 lower than one would expect from an average empirical relation found for a sample of PWNe observed with Chandra. The pulsar's spectrum can be described by an absorbed PL with n_{H}=3.5\times10^{22} cm^{-2} and Gamma=1.1, harder than any other pulsar spectrum reliably measured in the soft X-ray band. This non-thermal emission is 50% pulsed showing one peak per period. We have also investigated a possible connection between J1617 and the extended TeV source HESS J1616-508 whose center is located about 10' west of the pulsar. We find no preferential extension of the X-ray PWN toward the TeV source. Therefore, the Chandra data do not provide conclusive evidence for PSR J1617-5055 and HESS J1616-508 association. We have also analyzed archival X-ray, radio, and IR data on the HESS J1616-508 region and found traces of diffuse emission (resembling a shell in the radio) coinciding with the central part of HESS J1616-508. We speculate that the TeV source may be multiple, with most of the emission coming from an unknown SNR or a star-forming region, while some fraction of the TeV emission still may be attributed to the J1617 PWN., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures and 3 tables, submitted to ApJ

PSR J0108-1431 is a nearby, 170 Myr old, very faint radio pulsar near the "pulsar death line" in the P-Pdot diagram. We observed the pulsar field with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and detected a point source (53 counts in a 30 ks exposure, energy flux (9+/-2)\times 10^{-15} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 0.3-8 keV band) close to the radio pulsar position. Based on the large X-ray/optical flux ratio at the X-ray source position, we conclude that the source is the X-ray counterpart of PSR J0108-1431.The pulsar spectrum can be described by a power-law model with photon index Gamma \approx 2.2 and luminosity L_{0.3-8 keV} \sim 2\times 10^{28} d_{130}^2 ergs s^{-1}, or by a blackbody model with the temperature kT\approx 0.28 keV and bolometric luminosity L_{bol} \sim 1.3\times 10^{28} d_{130}^2 ergs s^{-1}, for a plausible hydrogen column density NH = 7.3\times 10^{19} cm^{-2} (d_{130}=d/130 pc). The pulsar converts \sim 0.4% of its spin-down power into the X-ray luminosity, i.e., its X-ray efficiency is higher than for most younger pulsars. From the comparison of the X-ray position with the previously measured radio positions, we estimated the pulsar proper motion of 0.2 arcsec yr^{-1} (V_\perp \sim 130 d_{130} km s^{-1}), in the south-southeast direction., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted to ApJ; minor revisions in Sections 2.2 and 3.1

Chandra and XMM-Newton resolved extremely long tails behind two middle-aged pulsars, J1509-5850 and J1740+1000. The tail of PSR J1509-5850 is discernible up to 5.6' from the pulsar (6.5 pc at a distance of 4 kpc), with a flux of 2*10^{-13} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} in 0.5-8 keV. The tail spectrum fits an absorbed power-law (PL) model with the photon index of 2.3\pm0.2, corresponding to the 0.5-8 keV luminosity of 1*10^{33} ergs s^{-1}, for n_H= 2.1*10^{22} cm^{-2}. The tail of PSR J1740+1000 is firmly detected up to 5' (2 pc at a 1.4 kpc distance), with a flux of 6*10^{-14} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1} in 0.4-10 keV. The PL fit yields photon index of 1.4-1.5 and n_H=1*10^{21} cm^{-2}. The large extent of the tails suggests that the bulk flow in the tails starts as mildly relativistic downstream of the termination shock, and then gradually decelerates. Within the observed extent of the J1509-5850 tail, the average flow speed exceeds 5,000 km s^{-1}, and the equipartition magnetic field is a few times 10^{-5} G. For the J1740+1000 tail, the equipartition field is a factor of a few lower. The harder spectrum of the J1740+1000 tail implies either less efficient cooling or a harder spectrum of injected electrons. For the high-latitude PSR J1740+1000, the orientation of the tail on the sky shows that the pulsar is moving toward the Galactic plane, which means that it was born from a halo-star progenitor. The comparison between the J1509 and J1740 tails and the X-ray tails of other pulsars shows that the X-ray radiation efficiency correlates poorly with the pulsar spin-down luminosity or age. The X-ray efficiencies of the ram-pressure confined pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) are systematically higher than those of PWNe around slowly moving pulsars with similar spin-down parameters., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures and 5 tables

Pulsar winds shocked in the ambient medium produce spectacular nebulae observable from the radio through gamma-rays. The shape and the spectrum of a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) depend on the angular distribution, magnetization and energy spectrum of the wind streaming from the pulsar magnetosphere, as well as on the pulsar velocity and the properties of the ambient medium. The advent of Chandra, with its unprecedented angular resolution and high sensitivity, has allowed us not only to detect many new PWNe, but also study their spatial and spectral structure and dynamics, which has significantly advanced our understanding of these objects. Here we overview recent observational results on PWNe, with emphasis on Chandra observations., Comment: 15 pages, 5 tables, 10 figures. The nature of the extended hard X-ray source XMMU J061804.3+222732 and its surroundings is investigated using XMM-Newton, Chandra, and Spitzer observations. This source is located in an interaction region of the IC 443 supernova remnant with a neighboring molecular cloud. The X-ray emission consists of a number of bright clumps embedded in an extended structured non-thermal X-ray nebula larger than 30" in size. Some clumps show evidence for line emission at ~1.9 keV and ~3.7 keV at the 99% confidence level. Large-scale diffuse radio emission of IC 443 passes over the source region, with an enhancement near the source. An IR source of about 14" x 7" size is prominent in the 24 um, 70 um, and 2.2 um bands, adjacent to a putative Si K-shell X-ray line emission region. The observed IR/X-ray morphology and spectra are consistent with those expected for J/C-type shocks of different velocities driven by fragmented supernova ejecta colliding with the dense medium of a molecular cloud. The IR emission of the source detected by Spitzer can be attributed to both continuum emission from an HII region created by the ejecta fragment and line emission excited by shocks. This source region in IC 443 may be an example of a rather numerous population of hard X-ray/IR sources created by supernova explosions in the dense environment of star-forming regions. We report on an observation of the Vela-like pulsar B1823-13 and its synchrotron nebula with Chandra.The pulsar's spectrum fits a power-law model with a photon index Gamma_PSR=2.4 for the plausible hydrogen column density n_H=10^{22} cm^{-2}, corresponding to the luminosity L_PSR=8*10^{31} ergs s^{-1} in the 0.5-8 keV band, at a distance of 4 kpc. The pulsar radiation likely includes magnetospheric and thermal components, but they cannot be reliably separated because of the small number of counts detected and strong interstellar absorption. The pulsar is surrounded by a compact, 25''x 10'', pulsar wind nebula (PWN) elongated in the east-west direction, which includes a brighter inner component, 7''x 3'', elongated in the northeast-southwest direction. The slope of the compact PWN spectrum is Gamma_comp=1.3, and the 0.5-8 keV luminosity is L_comp~3*10^{32} ergs s^{-1}. The compact PWN is surrounded by asymmetric diffuse emission (extended PWN) seen up to at least 2.4' south of the pulsar, with a softer spectrum (Gamma_ext=1.9), and the 0.5-8 keV luminosity L_ext~10^{33}-10^{34} ergs s^{-1}. We also measured the pulsar's proper motion using archival VLA data: \mu_\alpha=23.0+/-2.5 mas yr^{-1}, \mu_\delta=-3.9+/-3.3 mas yr^{-1}, which corresponds to the transverse velocity v_perp=440 km s^{-1}. The direction of the proper motion is approximately parallel to the elongation of the compact PWN, but it is nearly perpendicular to that of the extended PWN and to the direction towards the center of the bright VHE gamma-ray source HESS J1825-137, which is likely powered by PSR B1823-13., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures and 3 tables; submitted to ApJ

We detected X-ray emission from the 50-kyr-old pulsar J1809-1917 and resolved its pulsar wind nebula (PWN) with Chandra. The pulsar spectrum fits PL+BB model with the photon index of 1.2 and the BB temperature of 2 MK for n_{H}=0.7\times 10^{22} cm^{-2}. The luminosities are(4\pm 1)\times 10^{31} ergs s^{-1} for the PL component (in the 0.5-8 keV band) and ~1\times 10^{32} ergs s^{-1} for the BB component (bolometric) at a plausible distance of 3.5 kpc. The bright inner PWN component of a 3''\times12'' size is elongated in the north-south direction, with the pulsar close to its south end. This component is immersed in a larger (20''\times40''), similarly elongated outer PWN component of lower surface brightness. The elongated shape of the compact PWN can be explained by the ram pressure confinement of the pulsar wind due to the supersonic motion of the pulsar. The PWN spectrum fits a PL model with photon index of 1.4\pm0.1 and 0.5-8 keV luminosity of 4\times10^{32} ergs s^{-1}. The compact PWN appears to be inside a large-scale (~4'\times4') emission more extended to the south of the pulsar, i.e. in the direction of the alleged pulsar motion. To explain the extended X-ray emission ahead of the moving pulsar, one has to invoke strong intrinsic anisotropy of the pulsar wind or assume that this emission comes from a relic PWN swept by the asymmetrical reverse SNR shock. The pulsar and its PWN are located within the extent of the unidentified TeV source HESS J1809-193 whose brightest part is offset by ~8' to the south of the pulsar, i.e. in the same direction as the large-scale X-ray emission. Although the association between J1809-1917 and HESS J1809-193 is plausible, an alternative source of relativistic electrons powering HESS J1809-193 might be the serendipitously discovered X-ray source CXOU J180940.7-192544., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures and 3 tables, submitted to ApJ. We report the detection of the millisecond pulsar B1257+12 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In a 20 ks exposure we detected 25 photons from the pulsar, with energies between 0.4 and 2.0 keV, corresponding to the flux F_X=(4.4+/- 0.9)*10^{-15} ergs s^{-1} cm^{-2} in this energy range. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power-law model with photon index Gamma = 2.8 and luminosity L_X \approx 2.5*10^{29} ergs s^{-1} in the 0.3--8 keV band, for a plausible distance of 500 pc and hydrogen column density N_H=3*10^{20} cm^{-2}. Alternatively, the spectrum can be fitted by a blackbody model with kT ~ 0.22 keV and projected emitting area ~2000 m^2. If the thermal X-rays are emitted from two symmetric polar caps, the bolometric luminosity of the two caps is 2 L_bol ~ 3*10^{29} ergs s^{-1}. We compared our results with the data on other 30 millisecond pulsars observed in X-rays and found that the apparent X-ray efficiency of PSR B1257+12, L_X/Edot ~ 3*10^{-5} for d=500 pc, is lower than those of most of millisecond pulsars. This might be explained by an unfavorable orientation of the X-ray pulsar beam if the radiation is magnetospheric, or by strong asymmetry of polar caps if the radiation is thermal (e.g., one of the polar caps is much brighter than the other and remains invisible for most part of the pulsar period). Alternatively, it could be attributed to absorption of X-rays in circumpulsar matter, such as a flaring debris disk left over after formation of the planetary system around the pulsar., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, emulateapj.sty; accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

The field of the extended TeV source HESS J1804-216 was serendipitously observed with the Chandra ACIS detector. The data reveal several X-ray sources within the bright part of HESS J1804-216. The brightest of these objects, CXOU J180432.4-214009, which has been also detected with Swift and Suzaku, is consistent with being a point-like source, with the 0.3-7 keV flux of (1.7\pm0.2)\times10^{-13} ergs s^{-1} cm^{-2}. Its hard and strongly absorbed spectrum can be fitted by the absorbed power-law model with the best-fit photon index of 0.45 and hydrogen column density of 4\times10^{22} cm^{-2}, both with large uncertainties due to the strong correlation between these parameters. A search for pulsations resulted in a 106 s period candidate, which however has a low significance of 97.9%. We found no infrared-optical counterparts for this source. The second brightest source, CXOU J180441.9-214224, which has been detected with Suzaku, is either extended or multiple, with the flux of about 10^{-13} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1}. We found a nearby M dwarf within the X-ray source extension, which could contribute a fraction of the observed X-ray flux. The remaining sources are very faint (<3\times 10^{-14} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1}), and at least some of them are likely associated with nearby stars. Although one or both of the two brighter X-ray sources could be faint accreting binaries or remote pulsars with pulsar wind nebulae (hence possible TeV sources), their relation to HESS J1804-216 remains elusive. The possibility that HESS J1804-216 is powered by the relativistic wind from the young pulsar B1800-21, located at a distance of about 10 pc from the TeV source, still remains a more plausible option., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures and 2 tables; submitted to ApJ. We detected X-ray emission from PSR B1800-21 and its synchrotron nebula with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The pulsar's observed flux is (1.4+/-0.2) 10^{-14} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 1-6 keV band. The spectrum can be described by a two-component PL+BB model, suggesting a mixture of thermal and magnetospheric emission. For a plausible hydrogen column density n_{H}=1.4 10^{22} cm^{-2}, the PL component has a slope Gamma=1.4+/-0.6 and a luminosity L_{psr}^{nonth}=4 10^{31}(d/4 kpc)^2 ergs s^{-1}. The properties of the thermal component (kT=0.1-0.3 keV, L^{bol}=10^{31}-10^{33} ergs s^{-1}) are very poorly constrained because of the strong interstellar absorption. The compact, 7''\times4'', inner pulsar-wind nebula (PWN), elongated perpendicular to the pulsar's proper motion, is immersed in a fainter asymmetric emission. The observed flux of the PWN is (5.5+/-0.6) 10^{-14} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 1-8 keV band. The PWN spectrum fits by a PL model with Gamma=1.6+/-0.3, L=1.6 10^{32} (d/4 kpc})^2 ergs s^{-1}. The shape of the inner PWN suggests that the pulsar moves subsonically and X-ray emission emerges from a torus associated with the termination shock in the equatorial pulsar wind. The inferred PWN-pulsar properties (e.g., the PWN X-ray efficiency, L_{pwn}/\dot{E}~10^{-4}; the luminosity ratio, L_{pwn}/L_{psr}^{nonth}=4; the pulsar wind pressure at the termination shock, p_s=10^{-9} ergs cm^{-3}) are very similar to those of other subsonically moving Vela-like objects detected with Chandra (L_{pwn}/\dot{E}=10^{-4.5}-10^{-3.5}, L_{pwn}/L_{psr}^{nonth}~5, p_s=10^{-10}-10^{-8} ergs cm^{-1})., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables; submitted to ApJ. We review the state of the art for measuring the X-ray polarization of neutron stars. We discuss how valuable precision measurements of the degree and position angle of polarization as a function of energy and, where relevant, of pulse phase, would provide deeper insight into the details of the emission mechanisms. We then review the current state of instrumentation and its potential for obtaining relevant data. We found a very likely counterpart to the recently discovered hard X-ray source IGR J2018+4043 in the multi-wavelength observations of the source field. The source, originally discovered in the 20-40 keV band, is now confidently detected also in the 40-80 keV band, with a flux of (1.4 +/- 0.4) x 10(-11) erg cm(-2) s(-1). A 5 ks Swift observation of the IGR J2018+4043 field revealed a hard point-like source with the observed 0.5-10 keV flux of 3.4(+0.7)(-0.8) x 10(-12) erg cm(-2) s(-1) (90% confidence level) at alpha = 20h18m38.55s, delta = +40d41m00.4s (with a 4.2" uncertainty). The combined Swift-INTEGRAL spectrum can be described by an absorbed power-law model with photon index gamma = 1.3 +/- 0.2 and N_H = 6.1(+3.2)(-2.2) x 10(22) cm(-2). In archival optical and infrared data we found a slightly extended and highly absorbed object at the Swift source position. There is also an extended VLA 1.4 GHz source peaked at a beam-width distance from the optical and X-ray positions. The observed morphology and multiwavelength spectra of IGR J2018+4043 are consistent with those expected for an obscured accreting object, i.e. an AGN or a Galactic X-ray binary. The identification suggests possible connection of IGR J2018+4043 to the bright gamma-ray source GEV J2020+4023 (3EG J2020+4017) detected by COS B and CGRO EGRET in the gamma-Cygni SNR field., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, uses emulateapj style

We present the UV spectroscopy and timing of three nearby pulsars (Vela, B0656+14 and Geminga) recently observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. We also review the optical and X-ray properties of these pulsars and establish their connection with the UV properties. We show that the multiwavelengths properties of neutron stars (NSs) vary significantly within the sample of middle-aged pulsars. Even larger differences are found between the thermal components of Ge-minga and B0656+14 as compared to those of radio-quiet isolated NSs. We present a brief review of Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of neutron stars. The outstanding spatial and spectral resolution of this great observatory have allowed for observations of unprecedented clarity and accuracy. Many of these observations have provided new insights into neutron star physics. We present an admittedly biased and overly brief overview of these observations, highlighting some new discoveries made possible by the Observatory's unique capabilities. We also include our analysis of recent multiwavelength observations of the putative pulsar and its pulsar-wind nebula in the IC 443 SNR., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures. We report the detection of the double neutron star binary (DNSB) B1534+12 (= J1537+1155) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This DNSB (orbital period 10.1 hr) consists of the millisecond (recycled) pulsar J1537+1155A (P_A=37.9 ms) and a neutron star not detected in the radio. After the remarkable double pulsar binary J0737-3039, it is the only other DNSB detected in X-rays. We measured the flux of (2.2\pm 0.6)\times10^{-15} ergs s^{-1} cm^{-2} in the 0.3-6 keV band. The small number of collected counts allows only crude estimates of spectral parameters. The power-law fit yields the photon index of 3.2\pm 0.5 and the unabsorbed 0.2-10 keV luminosity L_X=6\times10^{29} ergs s^{-1} = 3\times 10^{-4}Edot_A, where Edot_A is the spin-down power of J1537+1155A. Alternatively, the spectrum can be fitted by a blackbody model with T = 2.2 MK and the projected emitting area of ~ 5\times 10^3 m^2. The distribution of photon arrival times over binary orbital phase shows a deficit of X-ray emission around apastron, which suggests that the emission is caused by interaction of the relativistic wind from J1537+1155A with its neutron star companion. We also reanalyzed the Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of J0737-3039 and found that its X-ray spectrum is similar to the spectrum of B1534+12, and its X-ray luminosity is about the same fraction of Edot_A, which suggests similar X-ray emission mechanisms. However, the X-ray emission from J0737-3039 does not show orbital phase dependence. This difference can be explained by the smaller eccentricity of J0737-3039 or a smaller misalignment between the equatorial plane of the millisecond pulsar and the orbital plane of the binary., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present an X-ray tour of diffuse emission in the 30 Doradus star-forming complex in the Large Magellanic Cloud using high-spatial-resolution X-ray images and spatially-resolved spectra obtained with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The dominant X-ray feature of the 30 Doradus nebula is the intricate network of diffuse emission generated by interacting stellar winds and supernovae working together to create vast superbubbles filled with hot plasma. We construct maps of the region showing variations in plasma temperature (T = 3--9 million degrees), absorption (N_H = 1--6 x 10^{21} cm^{-2}), and absorption-corrected X-ray surface brightness (S_X = 3--126 x 10^{31} ergs s^{-1} pc^{-2}). Enhanced images reveal the pulsar wind nebula in the composite supernova remnant N157B and the Chandra data show spectral evolution from non-thermal synchrotron emission in the N157B core to a thermal plasma in its outer regions. In a companion paper we show that R136, the central massive star cluster, is resolved at the arcsecond level into almost 100 X-ray sources. The superb spatial resolution of Chandra has allowed us to detect a 20''-long tail behind the Geminga pulsar, with a hard spectrum (photon index 1.0+/-0.2) and a luminosity (1.3+/-0.2) 10^{29} ergs/s in the 0.5 - 8 keV band, for an assumed distance of 200 pc. The tail could be either a pulsar jet, confined by a toroidal magnetic field of about 100 microGauss, or it can be associated with the shocked relativistic wind behind the supersonically moving pulsar confined by the ram pressure of the oncoming interstellar medium. We also detected an arc-like structure 5'' - 7'' ahead of the pulsar, extended perpendicular to the tail, with a factor of 3 lower luminosity. We see a 3-sigma enhancement in the Chandra image apparently connecting the arc with the southern outer tail that has been possibly detected with XMM-Newton. We detected a nearby (d=360 pc), old (5 Myr) pulsar B1133+16 with Chandra. The observed pulsar's flux is $(0.8\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-14}$ ergs cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 0.5-8 keV band. Because of the small number of counts detected, the spectrum can be described by various models. A power-law fit of the spectrum gives a photon index $\Gamma = 2.5$ and an isotropic luminosity of $1.4\times 10^{29}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ in the 0.5-8 keV band, which is about $1.6\times 10^{-3}$ of the spin-down power $\dot{E}$. The spectrum can also be fitted by a blackbody model with a temperature of $\approx 2.8$ MK and a projected emitting area of $\sim 500$ m$^2$, possibly a hot polar cap. The X-ray properties of PSR B1133+16 are similar to those of other old pulsars observed in X-rays, particularly the drifting pulsar B0943+10., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures, accepted to ApJ

Near-infrared images of the center of the Cas A supernova remnant taken with the NICMOS 2 camera on HST using the F110W and F160W filters (~J & ~H bands) have magnitude limits of 26.2 and 24.6 respectively, but reveal no sources within a 1.2" radius of the Chandra detected central X-ray point source (XPS). The NICMOS data, taken together with broadband optical magnitude limits (R ~ 28 mag) obtained from a deep STIS CCD exposure taken with a clear filter (50CCD), indicate that the XPS luminosities are very low in the optical/NIR bands (e.g., L_H < 3 x E29 erg/s) with no optical, J, or H band counterpart to the XPS easily detectable by HST. We discuss the nature of the Cas A central compact object based upon these new near-infrared and optical flux limits., Comment: 14 pages including 6 tables and 3 figures. A Chandra observation of the isolated hard X-ray source XMMU J061804.3+222732, located in the region of apparent interaction of the supernova remnant IC 443 with a molecular cloud, resolved the complex structure of the source in a few bright clumps embedded in an extended emission of a ~ 30 arcsec size. The X-ray spectra of the clumps and the extended emission are dominated by a hard power-law component with a photon index of 1.2--1.4. In addition, we see some indications of an optically thin thermal plasma of a ~ 0.3 keV temperature. The observed X-ray morphology and spectra are consistent with those expected for an isolated supernova ejecta fragment interacting with a dense ambient medium. A possible alternative interpretation is a pulsar wind nebula associated with either IC 443 or another SNR, G189.6+3.3., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters High resolution Images of Fig.1 are appended

We observed the gamma-ray pulsar Geminga with the HST STIS/MAMA detectors to measure the Geminga's UV spectrum and pulsations. The slope of the far-UV (FUV) spectrum is close to that of a Rayleigh-Jeans spectrum, suggesting that the FUV radiation is dominated by thermal emission from the neutron star (NS) surface. The measured FUV flux, F_FUV=(3.7+/-0.2)x10^-15 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 in 1155-1702 A band, corresponds to a brightness temperature T_RJ=(0.3-0.4)(d_200/R_13)^2 MK. The soft thermal component of the Geminga's X-ray spectrum measured with the XMM-Newton observatory corresponds to a temperature T_s=0.49+/-0.01 MK and radius R_s = (12.9+/-1.0)d_200 km. Unlike other NSs detected in the UV-optical, the FUV spectrum of Geminga lies below the extrapolation of the soft thermal component, which might be associated with the Geminga's very low temperature. Surprisingly, the thermal FUV radiation is strongly pulsed, showing a narrow dip at a phase close to that of a broader minimum of the soft X-ray light curve. The strong pulsations might be attributed to partial occultations of the thermal UV radiation by regions of the magnetosphere filled with electron/positron plasma. In contrast with the FUV spectrum, the near-IR (NIR) through near-UV (NUV) spectrum of Geminga is clearly nonthermal. It can be described by a power-law model, F_nu \propto nu^{-alpha} with a slope alpha = 0.43+/-0.15, close to alpha = 0.56+/-0.24 of the hard X-ray (E>2.5 keV) magnetospheric component. The observed NIR-optical-NUV spectrum is marginally consistent with the extrapolation of the X-ray magnetospheric spectrum. We present the results of deep, high-resolution, multi-band optical observations of the field of the young (~ 5,000 yrs) 16 ms X-ray pulsar PSR J0537$-$6910 performed with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Although a few new potential counterparts have been detected within or close to the revised Chandra X-ray error circle (~1 arcsec) of the pulsar, only two of them (with magnitudes m_{814W} ~ 23.9 and m_{814W} ~ 24.2) show indications of a peculiar spectrum which could be related to optical emission from the pulsar. This might be true also for a third, fainter, candidate detected only in one filter (with magnitude m_{814W} ~ 26.7). If either of the two brighter candidates is indeed the actual counterpart, the optical output of PSR J0537-6910 would make it similar to young Crab-like pulsars. If not, it would mean that PSR J0537-6910 is significantly underluminous with respect to all pulsars detected in the optical, Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics, in press

We present the timing and spectral analyses of theXMM-newton data on the 17-Myr-old, nearby radio pulsar B0950+08. This observation revealed pulsations of the X-ray flux of the pulsar at its radio period. The pulse shape and pulsed fraction are apparently different at lower and higher energies of the observed 0.2-10 keV energy range, which suggests that the radiation cannot be explained by a single emission mechanism. The X-ray spectrum of the pulsar can be fitted with a power-law model with a photon index about 1.75 and an (isotropic) luminosity about 9.8e29 erg/s in the 0.2-10 keV. Better fits are obtained with two-component, power-law plus thermal, models with index of 1.30 and 9.7e29 erg/s for the power-law component that presumably originates from the pulsar's magnetosphere. The thermal component, dominating at E>0.7 keV, can be interpreted as radiation from heated polar caps on the neutron star surface covered with a hydrogen atmosphere. The inferred effective temperature, radius, and bolometric luminosity of the polar caps are about 1 MK, 250 m, and 3e29 erg/s. Optical through X-ray nonthermal spectrum of the pulsar can be described as a single power-law with index 1.3-1.4 for the two-component X-ray fit. The ratio of the nonthermal X-ray (1-10 keV) luminosity to the nonthermal optical (4000-9000 \AA) luminosity is within the range of 1e2-1e3 observed for younger pulsars, which suggests that the magnetospheric X-ray and optical emissions are powered by the same mechanism in all pulsars. An upper limit on the temperature of the bulk of the neutron star surface, inferred from the optical and X-ray data, is about 0.15 MK. We present spectral analysis of the Crab Nebula obtained with the {\it Chandra} X-ray observatory. The X-ray spectrum is characterized by a power-law whose index varies across the nebula. The variation can be discussed in terms of the particle injection from the pulsar in two different directions: the equatorial plane containing the torus and the symmetry axis along the jet. In the equatorial plane, spectra within the torus are the hardest, with photon index $\alpha \approx 1.9$, and are almost independent of the surface brightness. At the periphery of the torus, the spectrum gradually softens in the outer, lower surface brightness regions, up to $\alpha \approx 3.0$. This indicates that synchrotron losses become significant to X-ray emitting particles at the outer boundary of the torus. We discuss the nature of the torus, incorporating information from observations at other wavelengths. Spectral variations are also seen within the southern jet. The core of the jet is the hardest with $\alpha \approx$ 2.0, and the outer sheath surrounding the core becomes softer with $\alpha$ up to 2.5 at the outermost part. Based on the similarity between the spectra of the jet core and the torus, we suggest that the electron spectra of the particles injected from the pulsar are also similar in these two different directions. The brightness ratio between the near and far sides of the torus can be explained by Doppler boosting and relativistic aberration; however, the observed ratio cannot be derived from the standard weakly magnetized pulsar wind model. X-ray observations of middle-aged pulsars allow one to study nonthermal radiation from pulsar magnetospheres and thermal radiation from neutron star (NS) surfaces. In particular, from the analysis of thermal radiation one can infer the surface temperatures and radii of NSs, which is important for investigating evolution of these objects and constraining the equation of state of the superdense matter in the NS interiors. The X-ray source 1E 1207.4-5209 is a compact central object in the G296.5+10.0 supernova remnant. Its spin period of 424 ms, discovered with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, suggests that it is a neutron star. The X-ray spectrum of this radio-quiet pulsar shows at least two absorption lines, first spectral features discovered in radiation from an isolated neutron star. Here we report the results of timing analysis of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of this source showing a non-monotonous behavior of its period. We discuss three hypotheses which may explain the observational result. The first one assumes that 1E 1207.$-5209 is a glitching pulsar, with frequency jumps of \Delta f > 5 \muHz occurring every 1-2 years. The second hypothesis explains the deviations from a steady spin-down as due to accretion, with accretion rate varying from \sim 10^{13} to >10^{16} g s^{-1}, from a disk possibly formed from ejecta produced in the supernova explosion. Finally, the period variations could be explained assuming that the pulsar is in a wide binary system with a long period, P_orb \sim 0.2-6 yr, and a low-mass companion, M_2 < 0.3 M_\odot., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publications in ApJ. 2004 ApJ, in press

We present year-scale morphological variations of the Crab Nebula revealed by Chandra X-ray observatory. Observations have been performed about every 1.7 years over the 3 years from its launch. The variations are clearly recognized at two sites: the torus and the southern jet. The torus, which had been steadily expanding until 1.7 years ago, now appears to have shrunk in the latest observation. Additionally, the circular structures seen to the northeast of the torus have decayed into several arcs. On the other hand, the southern jet shows the growth of its overall kinked-structure. We observed PSR J0437-4715 with the FUV-MAMA detector of the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrometer (STIS) to measure the pulsar's spectrum and pulsations. For the first time, UV emission from a millisecond pulsar is detected. The measured flux, $(2.0\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the 1150-1700 \AA range, corresponds to the luminosity $L_{\rm FUV}=(4.7\pm 0.5)\times 10^{27}$ erg s$^{-1}$, for the distance of 140 pc and negligible interstellar extinction. The shape of the observed spectrum suggests thermal emission from the neutron star surface with a surprisingly high temperature of about $1\times 10^5$ K, above the upper limit on the surface temperature of the younger ``ordinary'' pulsar J0108-1431. For the few-Gyr-old J0437-4715, such a temperature requires a heating mechanism to operate. The spectrum of J0437-4715 shows marginal evidence of an emission line at 1372 \AA, which might be a gravitationally redshifted Zeeman component of the Hydrogen Ly$\alpha$ line in a magnetic field $\sim 7\times 10^8$ G. Chandra observations of the Vela pulsar-wind nebula (PWN) have revealed a jet in the direction of the pulsar's proper motion, and a counter-jet in the opposite direction, embedded in diffuse nebular emission. The jet consists of a bright, 8''-long inner jet, between the pulsar and the outer arc, and a dim, curved outer jet that extends up to 100'' in approximately the same direction. From the analysis of thirteen Chandra observations spread over about 2.5 years we found that this outer jet shows particularly strong variability, changing its shape and brightness. We observed bright blobs in the outer jet moving away from the pulsar with apparent speeds (0.3-0.6)c and fading on time-scales of days to weeks. The spectrum of the outer jet fits a power-law model with a photon index of 1.3\pm0.1. The X-ray emission of the outer jet can be interpreted as synchrotron radiation of ultrarelativistic electrons/positrons. This interpretation allows one to estimate the magnetic field, ~100 microGauss, maximum energy of X-ray emitting electrons, ~2\times 10^{14} eV, and energy injection rate, ~8\times 10^{33} erg/s, for the outer jet. In the summed PWN image we see a dim, 2'-long outer counter-jet, which also shows a power-law spectrum with photon ined of 1.2-1.5. Southwest of the jet/counter-jet an extended region of diffuse emission is seen. Observations of the Vela pulsar region with the Chandra X-ray observatory have revealed the fine structure of its synchrotron pulsar-wind nebula (PWN), which showed an overall similarity with the Crab PWN. However, contrary to the Crab, no firm detection of the Vela PWN in optical has been reported yet. To search for the optical counterpart of the X-ray PWN, we analyzed deep optical observations performed with different telescopes. We compared the optical images with those obtained with the Chandra ACIS to search for extended emission patterns which could be identified as counterparts of the X-ray nebula elements. Although some features are seen in the optical images, we find no correlation with the X-ray structure. Thus, we conclude that the diffuse optical emission is more likely associated with filaments in the host Vela SNR. The derived upper limits on the optical flux from the PWN are compatibile, within the uncertainties, with the values expected on the basis of the extrapolations of the X-ray data., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures. Observations of thermal radiation from neutron stars allow one to measure the surface temperatures and confront them with cooling scenarios. Detection of gravitationally redshifted spectral lines can yield the mass-to-radius ratio. In the few cases when the distance is known, one can measure the neutron star radius, which is particularly important to constrain the equation of state of the superdense matter in the neutron star interiors. Finally, one can infer the chemical composition of the neutron star surface layers, which provides information about formation of neutron stars and their interaction with the environments. We present the observational results on thermal radiation from active pulsars and radio-quiet neutron stars, with emphasis on the results obtained with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and discuss some implications of these results. New results of HST and VLT observations of isolated pulsars and their environments are presented. We report here the results of the first Chandra X-Ray Observatory observations of the globular cluster M28 (NGC 6626). 46 X-ray sources are detected, of which 12 lie within one core radius of the center. We show that the apparently extended X-ray core emission seen with the ROSAT HRI is due to the superposition of multiple discrete sources for which we determine the X-ray luminosity function down to a limit of about 6xE30 erg/s. For the first time the unconfused phase-averaged X-ray spectrum of the 3.05-ms pulsar B1821--24 is measured and found to be best described by a power law with photon index ~ 1.2. Marginal evidence of an emission line centered at 3.3 keV in the pulsar spectrum is found, which could be interpreted as cyclotron emission from a corona above the pulsar's polar cap if the the magnetic field is strongly different from a centered dipole. The unabsorbed pulsar flux in the 0.5--8.0 keV band is ~3.5xE-13 ergs/s/cm^2. Spectral analysis of the 5 brightest unidentified sources is presented. Based on the spectral parameters of the brightest of these sources, we suggest that it is a transiently accreting neutron star in a low-mass X-ray binary, in quiescence. Fitting its spectrum with a hydrogen neutron star atmosphere model yields the effective temperature T_eff^\infty = 90^{+30}_{-10} eV and the radius R_NS^\infty = 14.5^{+6.9}_{-3.8} km. In addition to the resolved sources, we detect fainter, unresolved X-ray emission from the central core of M28. We observed 1E 1207.4--5209, a neutron star in the center of the supernova remnant PKS 1209--51/52, with the ACIS detector aboard the Chandra X-ray observatory and detected two absorption features in the source spectrum. The features are centered near 0.7 keV and 1.4 keV, their equivalent widths are about 0.1 keV. We discuss various possible interpretations of the absorption features and exclude some of them. A likely interpretation is that the features are associated with atomic transitions of once-ionized helium in the neutron star atmosphere with a strong magnetic field. Models of thermal emission of neutron stars, presumably formed in their atmospheres, are needed to infer the surface temperatures, magnetic fields, chemical composition, and neutron star masses and radii from the observational data. This information, supplemented with model equations of state and neutron star cooling models, is expected to move us further in understanding the fundamental properties of the superdense matter in the neutron star interiors. The neutron star atmospheres are very different from those of usual stars due to the immense gravity and huge magnetic fields. The outstanding capabilities of the Chandra X-ray observatory have greatly increased our potential to observe and analyze thermal radiation from the surfaces of neutron stars (NSs). Such observations allow one to measure the surface temperatures and confront them with the predictions of the NS cooling models. Detection of gravitationally redshifted spectral lines can yield the NS mass-to-radius ratio. In rare cases when the distance is known, one can measure the NS radius, which is particularly important to constrain the equation of state of the superdense matter in the NS interiors. Finally, one can infer the chemical composition of the NS surface layers, which provides information about formation of NSs and their interaction with the environment. Second Chandra observation of 1E 1207.4-5209, the central source of the supernova remnant PKS 1209-51/52, allowed us to confirm the previously detected period of 424 ms and, assuming a uniform spin-down, estimate the period derivative, Pdot (0.7-3)e-14 s/s. The corresponding characteristic age of the pulsar, P/2Pdot~200-900 kyr, is much larger than the estimated age of the SNR, \~7 kyr. The values of the spin-down luminosity, Edot (0.4-1.6)e34 erg/s, and conventional magnetic field, B (2-4)e12 G, are typical for a middle-aged radio pulsar, although no manifestations of pulsar activity have been observed. If 1E 1207.4-5209 is indeed the neutron star formed in the same supernova explosion that created PKS 1209-51/52, such a discrepancy in ages could be explained either by a long initial period, close to its current value, or, less likely, by a very large braking index of the pulsar. We report on spectral and timing observations of the nearest millisecond pulsar J0437-4715 with Chandra. The pulsar spectrum, detected up to 7 keV, cannot be described by a simple one-component model. We suggest that it consists of two components, a nonthermal power-law spectrum generated in the pulsar magnetosphere, with a photon index about 2, and a thermal spectrum emitted by heated polar caps, with a temperature decreasing outwards from 2 MK to 0.5 MK. The lack of spectral features in the thermal component suggests that the neutron star surface is covered by a hydrogen (or helium) atmosphere. The timing analysis shows one X-ray pulse per period, with a pulsed fraction of about 40% and the peak at the same pulse phase as the radio peak. X-ray images of some young supernova remnants show bright point sources which have not been detected in radio, optical and gamma-ray bands. Despite the similarity of the X-ray spectra of these objects, they show a variety of temporal properties. Most likely, they are neutron stars whose properties (spin periods? magnetic fields? environments?) are different from those of radio and/or gamma-ray pulsars. We present an overview of observational results on several objects of this class -- the central sources of Cassiopeia A, RX J0852-4622, RCW 103, Puppis A, and PKS 1209-51/52 -- with emphasis on the recent Chandra observations., Comment: 10 pages, uses newpasp.sty. We present a series of monitoring observations of the Crab Nebula with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, focusing on the temporal evolution of the structure. This series of 8 observations, spanning a period of approximately six months, shows the dynamic nature of the inner X-ray structures. We detected outward moving ``wisps'' from the recently discovered inner ring seen in optical observations. We also find that the inner ring itself shows temporal variations in structure. The torus also appears to be expanding. We report the results of the spectral and timing analysis of observations of the Vela pulsar with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum shows no statistically significant spectral lines in the observed 0.25--8.0 keV band. It consists of two distinct continuum components. The softer component can be modeled as either a magnetic hydrogen atmosphere spectrum with kT = 59 +- 3 eV, R = 15.5 +- 1.5 km, or a standard blackbody with kT = 129 +- 4 eV, R = 2.1 +- 0.2 km (the radii are for a distance of 250 pc). The harder component, modeled as a power-law spectrum, gives photon indices depending on the model adopted for the soft component: gamma = 1.5 +- 0.3 for the magnetic atmosphere soft component, and gamma = 2.7 +- 0.4 for the blackbody soft component. Timing analysis shows three peaks in the pulse profile, separated by about 0.3 in phase. Energy-resolved timing provides evidence for pulse profile variation with energy. G21.5-0.9 is a plerionic supernova remnant (SNR) whose properties hint at the presence of a pulsar -- yet no pulsations have been found at any wavelength. Early observations with Chandra led to the discovery of an extended component, making the SNR at least twice as big as originally thought. Our analysis indicates that this low-surface brightness extended component is non-thermal. We perform a spatially resolved spectroscopy using a 72 ksec exposure with ACIS-S, and find no evidence of line emission. The 5-arcminute diameter remnant is well fitted with a power law with a photon index steepening from 1.5 (central core) to 2.7 (extended component) and a column density N_H=2.2 10^22 cm^-2. Using a 76 ksec exposure with the HRC, we derive an upper limit of 16% on the pulsed fraction from a putative pulsar. We also infer the parameters of the `hidden pulsar' in G21.5-0.9 in comparison with the Crab and 3C 58 pulsars. We have implemented a Monte Carlo algorithm to model and predict the response of various kinds of CCDs to X-ray photons and minimally-ionizing particles and have applied this model to the CCDs in the Chandra X-ray Observatory's Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer. This algorithm draws on empirical results and predicts the response of all basic types of X-ray CCD devices. It relies on new solutions of the diffusion equation, including recombination, to predict the radial charge cloud distribution in field-free regions of CCDs. By adjusting the size of the charge clouds, we can reproduce the event grade distribution seen in calibration data. Using a model of the channel stops developed here and an insightful treatment of the insulating layer under the gate structure developed at MIT, we are able to reproduce all notable features in ACIS calibration spectra. The simulator is used to reproduce ground and flight calibration data from ACIS, thus confirming its fidelity. The central region of the recently discovered supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 was observed with the ACIS detector aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We found only one relatively bright source, about 4' north of the SNR center, with a flux of $\sim 2\times 10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the 0.5--10 keV band. The position of this point-like source, CXOU J085201.4-461753, rules out its association with the two bright stars in the field, HD 76060 and Wray 16-30. Observations of the field with the CTIO 0.9-m telescope show a star ($R\approx 17$, $B\approx 19$) at about 2\farcs4 from the nominal X-ray position. We consider association of this star with the X-ray source unlikely and estimate a limiting magnitude of the optical counterpart as $B \ge 22.5$ and $R \ge 21.0$. Based on the X-ray-to-optical flux ratio, we argue that the X-ray source is likely the compact remnant of the supernova explosion that created the RX J0852.0-4622 SNR. The observed X-ray spectrum of the source is softer than spectra of magnetospheric radiation of rotation-powered pulsars, but it is harder than spectra of cooling neutron stars emitting thermal radiation from the entire surface, similar to the central compact source of the Cas A SNR. We suggest that CXOU J085201.4-461753 belongs to the growing family of radio-quiet compact central sources, presumably neutron stars, recently discovered in a number of SNRs., Comment: 4 pages (incl. 2 embedded PS figures), AASTEX, uses emulateapj5.sty. We present the analysis of archival X-ray observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) G21.5-0.9. Based on its morphology and spectral properties, G21.5-0.9 has been classified as a Crab-like SNR. In their early analysis of the CHANDRA calibration data, Slane et al. (2000) discovered a low-surface-brightness, extended emission. They interpreted this component as the blast wave formed in the supernova (SN) explosion. In this paper, we present the CHANDRA analysis using a total exposure of ~150 ksec. We also include ROSAT and ASCA observations. Our analysis indicates that the extended emission is non-thermal -- a result in agreement with XMM observations. The entire remnant of radius ~ 2'.5 is best fitted with a power law model with a photon index steepening away from the center. The total unabsorbed flux in the 0.5-10 keV is 1.1E-10 erg/cm2/s with an 85% contribution from the 40" radius inner core. Timing analysis of the High-Resolution Camera (HRC) data failed to detect any pulsations. We put a 16% upper limit on the pulsed fraction. We derive the physical parameters of the putative pulsar and compare them with those of other plerions (such as the Crab and 3C 58). G21.5-0.9 remains the only plerion whose size in X-rays is bigger than in the radio. The observations of the pulsar-wind nebula (PWN) around the Vela pulsar with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory, taken on 2000 April 30 and November 30, reveal its complex morphology reminiscent of that of the Crab PWN. Comparison of the two observations shows changes up to 30% in the surface brightness of the PWN features. Some of the PWN elements show appreciable shifts, up to a few arcseconds (about 10^{16} cm), and/or spectral changes. We report the results of the spectral analysis of two observations of the Vela pulsar with the Chandra X-ray observatory. The spectrum of the pulsar does not show statistically significant spectral lines in the observed 0.25-8.0 keV band. Similar to middle-aged pulsars with detected thermal emission, the spectrum consists of two distinct components. The softer component can be modeled as a magnetic hydrogen atmosphere spectrum - for the pulsar magnetic field $B=3\times 10^{12}$ G and neutron star mass $M=1.4 M_\odot$ and radius $R^\infty =13$ km, we obtain $\tef^\infty =0.68\pm 0.03$ MK, $L_{\rm bol}^\infty = (2.6\pm 0.2)\times 10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$, $d=210\pm 20$ pc (the effective temperature, bolometric luminosity, and radius are as measured by a distant observer). The effective temperature is lower than that predicted by standard neutron star cooling models. A standard blackbody fit gives $T^\infty =1.49\pm 0.04$ MK, $L_{\rm bol}^\infty=(1.5\pm 0.4)\times 10^{32} d_{250}^2$ erg s$^{-1}$ ($d_{250}$ is the distance in units of 250 pc); the blackbody temperature corresponds to a radius, $R^\infty =(2.1\pm 0.2) d_{250}$ km, much smaller than realistic neutron star radii. The harder component can be modeled as a power-law spectrum, with parameters depending on the model adopted for the soft component - $\gamma=1.5\pm 0.3$, $L_x=(1.5\pm 0.4)\times 10^{31} d_{250}^2$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $\gamma=2.7\pm 0.4$, $L_x=(4.2\pm 0.6)\times 10^{31} d_{250}^2$ erg s$^{-1}$ for the hydrogen atmosphere and blackbody soft component, respectively ($\gamma$ is the photon index, $L_x$ is the luminosity in the 0.2--8 keV band).
