In this study we present simultaneous low-resolution longitudinal magnetic field measurements and high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the cool single giant FK Com. The variation of the magnetic field over the rotational period of 2.4 days is compared with the starspot location obtained using Doppler imaging techniques, V-band photometry and V-I colours. The chromospheric activity is studied simultaneously with the photospheric activity using high resolution observations of the Halpha, Hbeta and Hgamma line profiles. Both the maximum (272 +/- 24 G) and minimum (60 +/- 17 G) in the mean longitudinal magnetic field, , are detected close to the phases where cool spots appear on the stellar surface. The presence of magnetic fields in O-type stars has been suspected for a long time. The discovery of such fields would explain a wide range of well documented enigmatic phenomena in massive stars, in particular cyclical wind variability, H alpha emission variations, chemical peculiarity, narrow X-ray emission lines and non-thermal radio/X-ray emission. To investigate the incidence of magnetic fields in O stars, we acquired 38 new spectropolarimetric observations with FORS1 (FOcal Reducer low dispersion Spectrograph) mounted on the 8-m Kueyen telescope of the VLT. Spectropolarimetric observations have been obtained at different phases for a sample of 13 O stars. 10 stars were observed in the spectral range 348-589nm, HD36879 and HD148937 were observed in the spectral region 325-621nm, and HD155806 was observed in both settings. To prove the feasibility of the FORS1 spectropolarimetric mode for the measurements of magnetic fields in hot stars, we present in addition 12 FORS1 observations of the mean longitudinal magnetic field in theta^1 Ori C and compare them with measurements obtained with the MuSiCoS, ESPaDOnS and Narval spectropolarimeters. Most stars in our sample which have been observed on different nights show a change of the magnetic field polarity, but a field at a significance level of 3sigma has been detected only in four stars, HD36879, HD148937, HD152408, and HD164794. The largest longitudinal magnetic field, = -276+-88G, was detected in the Of?p star HD148937. We present the second-generation VLTI instrument GRAVITY, which currently is in the preliminary design phase. GRAVITY is specifically designed to observe highly relativistic motions of matter close to the event horizon of Sgr A*, the massive black hole at center of the Milky Way. We have identified the key design features needed to achieve this goal and present the resulting instrument concept. It includes an integrated optics, 4-telescope, dual feed beam combiner operated in a cryogenic vessel; near infrared wavefront sensing adaptive optics; fringe tracking on secondary sources within the field of view of the VLTI and a novel metrology concept. Simulations show that the planned design matches the scientific needs; in particular that 10 microarcsecond astrometry is feasible for a source with a magnitude of K=15 like Sgr A*, given the availability of suitable phase reference sources., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, to appear in the conference proceedings of SPIE Astronomical Instrumentation, 23-28 June 2008, Marseille, France

We acquired high resolution spectroscopic and low resolution spectropolarimetric observations to achieve the following goals: a) to improve the orbital parameters to allow a more in-depth discussion on the possibility of mass transfer in the binary system, b) to carry out a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundance analysis, and c) to search for the presence of a magnetic field. The study of the radial velocities using CORALIE spectra allowed us to significantly improve the orbital parameters. A comparative NLTE abundance analysis was undertaken for theta Car and two other early B-type stars with recently detected magnetic fields, tau Sco and xi^1 CMa. The analysis revealed significantly different abundance patterns: a one-order-of-magnitude nitrogen overabundance and carbon depletion was found in theta Car, while the oxygen abundance is roughly solar. For the stars xi^1 CMa and tau Sco the carbon abundance is solar and, while an N excess is also detected, it is of much smaller amplitude (0.4-0.6dex). Such an N overabundance is typical of the values already found for other slowly-rotating (magnetic) B-type dwarfs. For theta Car, we attribute instead the chemical peculiarities to a past episode of mass transfer between the two binary components. The results of the search for a magnetic field using FORS1 at the VLT consisting of 26 measurements over a time span of ~1.2h are rather inconclusive: only few measurements have a significance level of 3sigma. Although we detect a periodicity of the order of ~8.8min in the dataset involving the measurements on all hydrogen Balmer lines with the exception of the Halpha and Hbeta lines, these results have to be confirmed by additional time-resolved magnetic field observations., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the first high spatial resolution monitoring of the dust forming nova V1280 Sco performed with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Spectra and visibilities were obtained from the onset of the dust formation 23 days after discovery till day 145, using the instruments AMBER and MIDI. These interferometric observations are complemented by near-infrared data from the 1.2m Mt. Abu Infrared Observatory, India. The observations are first interpreted with simple models but more complex models, involving a second shell, are necessary to explain the data obtained from t=110d after outburst. This behavior is in accordance with the light curve of V1280 Sco which exhibits a secondary peak around t=106d, followed by a new steep decline, suggesting a new dust forming event. Spherical dust shell models generated with the DUSTY code are also used to investigate the parameters of the main dust shell. Using uniform disk and Gaussian models, these observations allow us to determine an apparent linear expansion rate for the dust shell of 0.35 +/- 0.03 mas/day and the approximate time of ejection of the matter in which dust formed as t_ejec=10.5+/-7d, i.e. close to the maximum brightness. This information, combined with the expansion velocity of 500+/-100km/s, implies a distance estimate of 1.6+/-0.4kpc. The dust mass generated was typically 2-8 10^-9 solar mass per day. Considering that the dust forming event lasted at least 200-250d, the mass of the ejected material is likely to have exceeded 10^-4 solar mass.

We report the results of our study of magnetic fields in a sample of 15 Be stars using spectropolarimetric data obtained at the European Southern Observatory with the multi-mode instrument FORS1 installed at the 8m Kueyen telescope. We detect weak photospheric magnetic fields in four stars, HD56014, HD148184, HD155806, and HD181615. We note that for HD181615 the evolutionary status is not obvious due to the fact that it is a binary system currently observed in the initial rapid phase of mass exchange between the two components. Further, we notify the possible presence of distinct circular polarisation features in the circumstellar components of Ca II H&K in three stars, HD58011, HD117357, and HD181615, hinting at a probable presence of magnetic fields in the circumstellar mass loss disks of these stars. We emphasize the need for future spectropolarimetric observations of Be stars with detected magnetic fields to study the temporal evolution of their magnetic fields and the correlation of magnetic field properties with dynamical phenomena taking place in the gaseous circumstellar disks of these stars., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in AN

The most favored interpretation for the detection of X-ray emission from late B-type stars is that these stars have a yet undiscovered late-type companion (or an unbound nearby late-type star) that produces the X-rays. Several faint IR objects at (sub)-arcsecond separation from B-type stars have been uncovered in our earlier adaptive optics imaging observations, and some of them have been followed up with the high spatial resolution of the Chandra X-ray observatory, pinpointing the X-ray emitter. However, firm conclusions on their nature requires a search for spectroscopic signatures of youth. Here we report on our recent ISAAC observations carried out in low resolution spectroscopic mode. Equivalent widths have been used to obtain information on spectral types of the companions. All eight X-ray emitting systems with late B-type primaries studied contain dwarf like companions with spectral types later than A7. The only system in the sample where the companion turns out to be of early spectral type is not an X-ray source. These results are consistent with the assumption that the observed X-ray emission from late B-type stars is produced by an active pre-main sequence companion star., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We re-discuss the evolutionary state of upper main sequence magnetic stars using a sample of Ap and Bp stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes and definitely determined longitudinal magnetic fields. We confirm our previous results obtained from the study of Ap and Bp stars with accurate measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus and mean quadratic magnetic fields that magnetic stars of mass M < 3 M_sun are concentrated towards the centre of the main-sequence band. In contrast, stars with masses M > 3 M_sun seem to be concentrated closer to the ZAMS. The study of a few known members of nearby open clusters with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes confirms these conclusions. Stronger magnetic fields tend to be found in hotter, younger and more massive stars, as well as in stars with shorter rotation periods. No evidence is found for any loss of angular momentum during the main-sequence life. The magnetic flux remains constant over the stellar life time on the main sequence. An excess of stars with large obliquities beta is detected in both higher and lower mass stars. The obliquity angle distribution as inferred from the distribution of r-values appears random at the time magnetic stars become observable on the H-R diagram. After quite a short time spent on the main sequence, the obliquity angle beta tends to reach values close to either 90 deg or 0 deg for M < 3 M_sun. The evolution of the obliquity angle beta seems to be somewhat different for low and high mass stars. While we find a strong hint for an increase of beta with the elapsed time on the main sequence for stars with M > 3 M_sun, no similar trend is found for stars with M < 3 M_sun. It is essential for the understanding of stellar structure models of high mass stars to explain why constant stars, non-pulsating chemically peculiar hot Bp stars and pulsating stars co-exist in the slowly pulsating B stars and beta Cephei instability strips. We have conducted a search for magnetic fields in the four Bp stars HD55522, HD105382, HD131120, and HD138769 which previously have been wrongly identified as slowly pulsating B stars. A recent study of these stars using the Doppler Imaging technique revealed that the elements He and Si are inhomogeneously distributed on the stellar surface, causing the periodic variability. Using FORS1 in spectropolarimetric mode at the VLT, we have acquired circular polarisation spectra to test the presence of a magnetic field in these stars. A variable magnetic field is clearly detected in HD55522 and HD105382, but no evidence for the existence of a magnetic field was found in HD131120. The presence of a magnetic field in HD138769 is suggested by one measurement at 3 sigma level. We discuss the occurence of magnetic B stars among the confirmed pulsating B stars and find strong magnetic fields of order kG and oscillations to be mutually exclusive., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in AN

We intend to investigate separately the photospheric and circumstellar (CS) magnetic field components in seven Herbig Ae stars. The study is based on low-resolution (R ~ 2000 and 4000) spectropolarimetric data collected from 2003 to 2005 at the Very Large Telescope (ESO, Chile) with the multi-mode instrument FORS1. We show that the spectropolarimetric results strongly depend on the level of CS contribution to the stellar spectra. We have improved the determination accuracy of magnetic fields up to the 7 sigma level in the two Herbig Ae stars HD139614 and HD144432, observed in 2005 when these objects were at a low level state of their CS activity. We have established that at a higher level state of CS activity the polarisation signatures are related mainly to the CS matter. The presence of CS polarisation signatures formed in the stellar wind supports the assumption that the magnetic centrifuge is a principal mechanism of wind acceleration. We conclude that the most effective way to investigate the magnetism of Herbig Ae stars is to monitor their spectropolarimetric behaviour at different states of CS activity. Obviously, higher resolution spectropolarimetric observations would extend the sample of spectral lines to be used for the measurements of magnetic fields at different levels in the stellar atmosphere and CS envelope. We present the results of a high spectral resolution study of the eclipsing binary AR Aur. AR Aur is the only known eclipsing binary with a HgMn primary star exactly on the ZAMS and a secondary star still contracting towards the ZAMS. We detect for the first time in the spectra of the primary star that for many elements the line profiles are variable over the rotation period. The strongest profile variations are found for the elements Pt, Hg, Sr, Y, Zr, He and Nd, while the line profiles of O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe show only weak distortions over the rotation period. The slight variability of He and Y is also confirmed by the study of high resolution spectra of another HgMn star: alpha And. A preliminary modelling of the inhomogeneous distribution has been carried out for Sr and Y. Our analysis shows that these elements are very likely concentrated in a fractured ring along the rotational equator. It may be an essential clue for the explanation of the origin of the chemical anomalies in HgMn stars (which are very frequently found in binary and multiple systems) that one large fraction of the ring is missing exactly on the surface area which is permanently facing the secondary, and another small one on the almost opposite side. The results presented about the inhomogeneous distribution of various chemical elements over the stellar surface of the primary suggest new directions for investigations to solve the question of the origin of abundance anomalies in B-type stars with HgMn peculiarity., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of a magnetic survey of a sample of eight beta Cephei stars and 26 Slowly Pulsating B stars with FORS1 at the VLT. A weak mean longitudinal magnetic field of the order of a few hundred Gauss is detected in the beta Cephei star xi^1 CMa and in 13 SPB stars. The star xi^1 CMa becomes the third magnetic star among the beta Cephei stars. Before our study, the star zeta Cas was the only known magnetic SPB star. All magnetic SPB stars for which we gathered several magnetic field measurements show a field that varies in time. We do not find a relation between the evolution of the magnetic field with stellar age in our small sample. Our observations imply that beta Cephei stars and SPBs can no longer be considered as classes of non-magnetic pulsators, but the effect of the fields on the oscillation properties remains to be studied., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted as a letter to MNRAS

To properly understand the physics of Ap and Bp stars it is particularly important to identify the origin of their magnetic fields. For that, an accurate knowledge of the evolutionary state of stars that have a measured magnetic field is an important diagnostic. Previous results based on a small and possibly biased sample suggest that the distribution of magnetic stars with mass below 3 M_sun in the H-R diagram differs from that of normal stars in the same mass range (Hubrig et al. 2000). In contrast, higher mass magnetic Bp stars may well occupy the whole main-sequence width (Hubrig, Schoeller & North 2005). In order to rediscuss the evolutionary state of upper main sequence magnetic stars, we define a larger and bias-free sample of Ap and Bp stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes and reliably determined longitudinal magnetic fields. We used FORS1 at the VLT in its spectropolarimetric mode to measure the magnetic field in chemically peculiar stars where it was unknown or poorly known as yet. In this first paper we present our results of the mean longitudinal magnetic field measurements in 136 stars. Our sample consists of 105 Ap and Bp stars, two PGa stars, 17 HgMn stars, three normal stars, and nine SPB stars. Recently, with the goal to study multiplicity of chemically peculiar stars, we carried out a survey of 40 stars using diffraction limited near infrared (IR) imaging with NAOS-CONICA (NACO) at the VLT. Here, we announce the detection of 27 near IR companion candidates around 25 late B-type chemically peculiar stars exhibiting strong overabundances of the chemical elements Hg and Mn in their atmospheres. A key point for the understanding of the abundance patterns in these stars may be connected with binarity and multiplicity. To properly understand the physics of upper main sequence stars it is particularly important to identify the origin of their magnetic fields. Recently, we confirmed that magnetic fields appear in Ap stars of mass below 3 M_sun only if they have already completed at least approximately 30% of their main-sequence lifetime. The absence of stars with strong magnetic fields close to the ZAMS might be seen as an argument against the fossil field theories. We have obtained accurate circular spectropolarimetric observations for a sample of Vega-like and Herbig Ae/Be stars with FORS1 at the VLT in an attempt to detect their magnetic fields. No magnetic field could be diagnosed in any Vega-like star. The most accurate determination of a magnetic field, at 2.6 sigma level, has been performed for the Vega-like star iota Cen for which we have measured = -77+-30 G. In the prototype of Vega-like stars, the star beta Pictoris, which shows conspicuous signs of chromospheric activity, a longitudinal magnetic field is measured only at ~1.5 sigma level. We diagnose for the first time a longitudinal magnetic field at a level larger than 3 sigma for the two Herbig Ae stars HD31648 and HD144432 and we confirm the previous detection of a magnetic field in a third Herbig Ae star, HD139614. Finally, we discuss the discovery of distinctive Zeeman features in the unusual Herbig Ae star HD190073 where the Ca II doublet displays several components in both H and K lines. From the measurement of circular polarization in all Balmer lines from H_beta to H_8 we obtain = +26+-34 G. However, using for the measurement of circular polarization only the Ca II H and K lines, we are able to diagnose a longitudinal magnetic field at 2.8 sigma level, = +84+-30 G., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the results of N-band spectro-interferometric observations of the silicate carbon star IRAS08002-3803 with the MID-infrared Interferometric instrument (MIDI) at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The observations were carried out using two unit telescopes (UT2 and UT3) with projected baseline lengths ranging from 39 to 47 m. Our observations of IRAS08002-3803 have spatially resolved the dusty environment of a silicate carbon star for the first time and revealed an unexpected wavelength dependence of the angular size in the N band: the uniform-disk diameter is found to be constant and ~36 mas (72 Rstar) between 8 and 10 micron, while it steeply increases longward of 10 micron to reach ~53 mas (106 Rstar) at 13 micron. Model calculations with our Monte Carlo radiative transfer code show that neither spherical shell models nor axisymmetric disk models consisting of silicate grains alone can simultaneously explain the observed wavelength dependence of the visibility and the spectral energy distribution (SED). We propose that the circumstellar environment of IRAS08002-3803 may consist of two grain species coexisting in the disk: silicate and a second grain species, for which we consider amorphous carbon, large silicate grains, and metallic iron grains. Comparison of the observed visibilities and SED with our models shows that such disk models can fairly -- though not entirely satisfactorily -- reproduce the observed SED and N-band visibilities. Our MIDI observations and the radiative transfer calculations lend support to the picture where oxygen-rich material around IRAS08002-3803 is stored in a circumbinary disk surrounding the carbon-rich primary star and its putative low-luminosity companion., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present interferometric observations of the Be star 51 Ophiuchi. These observations were obtained during the science demonstration phase of the MIDI instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Using MIDI, a Michelson 2 beam combiner that operates at the N band (8 to 13 microns), we obtained for the first time observations of 51 Oph in the mid-infrared at high-angular resolution. It is currently known that this object presents a circumstellar dust and gas disk that shows a very different composition from other Herbig Ae disks. The nature of the 51 Oph system is still a mystery to be solved. Does it have a companion? Is it a protoplanetary system? We still don't know. Observations with MIDI at the VLTI allowed us to reach high-angular resolution (20 mas).We have several uv points that allowed us to constrain the disk model. VLT-Interferometry will allow imaging of the Galactic Center (GC) and the nuclei of extragalactic sources at an angular resolution of a few milliarcseconds. VLTI will be a prime instrument to study the immediate environment of the massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. With the MID infrared Interferometric instrument (MIDI) for example the enigmatic compact dust embedded MIR-excess sources within the central parsec should be resolvable. Further the observations of external galactic nuclei will allow unprecedented measurements of physical parameters (i.e. structure and luminosity) in these systems. With the exception of a few 'self-referencing' sources these faint-target observations will benefit from the available off-axis wavefront-correction system. To fully exploit the use of VLTI within this context, the following questions have to be addressed among others: How feasible is blind-pointing on (faint) science targets? Are VLTI observations still efficiently feasible if these faint science targets exceed the usual angular distance (<=1arcmin) to a GuideStar [...]? How is the fringe-tracking procedure affected in densely populated regions such as the GC? What preparatory steps have to be performed to successfully observe these non-standard targets with the VLTI? In this contribution, we present aspects for the preparation of VLTI observations, which will be conducted in the near future. Considering these example observations of the GC region, several details of observing modes are discussed, which are necessary to observe such science targets. We present the results of a magnetic survey with FORS1 in polarimetric mode of a sample of B and Herbig Ae stars with previously undetected magnetic fields. For the first time a mean longitudinal magnetic field at a level higher than 3 sigma has been detected in one normal B star, two HgMn stars, one PGa star and four SPB stars. The observations of the three Herbig Ae stars (also known as Vega-like stars) reveal a definite longitudinal magnetic field in the star HD139614 at 4.8 sigma level: =-450+-93 G. This is the largest magnetic field ever diagnosed for a Herbig Ae star. A hint of a magnetic field is found in the other two stars, HD144432 and HD144668, for which magnetic fields are measured at the ~1.6 sigma and ~2.5 sigma level respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in: "The nature and evolution of disks around hot stars"

An investigation of the stability of the transfer function of the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope Interferometer has been carried out through observations of Fomalhaut over a wide range in hour angle. No significant variation in the transfer function was found for the zenith angle range 5-70 degrees. The projected baseline varied between 139.7 m and 49.8 m during the observations and, as an integral part of the determination of the transfer function, a new accurate limb-darkened angular diameter for Fomalhaut has been established. Herbig Ae stars are young A-type stars in the pre-main sequence evolutionary phase with masses of ~1.5-3 M_o. They show rather intense surface activity (Dunkin et al. 1997) and infrared excess related to the presence of circumstellar disks. Because of their youth, primordial magnetic fields inherited from the parent molecular cloud may be expected, but no direct evidence for the presence of magnetic fields on their surface, except in one case (Donati et al. 1997), has been found until now. Here we report observations of optical circular polarization with FORS 1 at the VLT in the three Herbig Ae stars HD 139614, HD 144432 and HD 144668. A definite longitudinal magnetic field at 4.8 sigma level, =-450+-93 G, has been detected in the Herbig Ae star HD 139614. This is the largest magnetic field ever diagnosed for a Herbig Ae star. A hint of a weak magnetic field is found in the other two Herbig Ae stars, HD 144432 and HD 144668, for which magnetic fields are measured at the ~1.6 sigma and ~2.5 sigma level respectively. Further, we report the presence of circular polarization signatures in the Ca II K line in the V Stokes spectra of HD 139614 and HD 144432, which appear unresolved at the low spectral resolution achievable with FORS 1. We present K-band commissioning observations of the Mira star prototype o Cet obtained at the ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) with the VINCI instrument and two siderostats. The observations were carried out between 2001 October and December, in 2002 January and December, and in 2003 January. Rosseland angular radii are derived from the measured visibilities by fitting theoretical visibility functions obtained from center-to-limb intensity variations (CLVs) of Mira star models (Bessel et al. 1996, Hofmann et al. 1998, Tej et al. 2003). Using the derived Rosseland angular radii and the SEDs reconstructed from available photometric and spectrophotometric data, we find effective temperatures ranging from T_eff=3192 +/- 200 K at phase phi=0.13 to 2918 +/- 183 K at phi=0.26. Comparison of these Rosseland radii, effective temperatures, and the shape of the observed visibility functions with model predictions suggests that o Cet is a fundamental mode pulsator. Furthermore, we investigated the variation of visibility function and diameter with phase. The Rosseland angular diameter of o Cet increased from 28.9 +/- 0.3 mas (corresponding to a Rosseland radius of 332 +/- 38 R_sun for a distance of D=107 +/- 12 pc) at phi=0.13 to 34.9 +/- 0.4 mas (402 +/- 46 R_sun) at phi=0.4. The error of the Rosseland linear radius almost entirely results from the error of the parallax, since the error of the angular diameter is only approximately 1 %., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present new high angular resolution observations at near-IR wavelengths of the core of the Luminous Blue Variable Eta Carinae, using NAOS-CONICA at the VLT and VINCI at the VLT Interferometer (VLTI). The latter observations provide spatial information on a scale of 5 milli-arcsec or ~11 AU at the distance of Eta Carinae. The present-day stellar wind of Eta Carinae is resolved on a scale of several stellar radii. Assuming spherical symmetry, we find a mass loss rate of 1.6x10^{-3} M_sun/yr and a wind clumping factor of 0.26. The VLTI data taken at a baseline of 24 meter show that the object is elongated with a de-projected axis ratio of approximately 1.5; the major axis is aligned with that of the large bi-polar nebula that was ejected in the 19th century. The most likely explanation for this observation is a counter-intuitive model in which stellar rotation near the critical velocity causes enhanced mass loss along the rotation axis. This results from the large temperature difference between pole and equator in rapidly rotating stars. Eta Carinae must rotate in excess of 90 per cent of its critical velocity to account for the observed shape. The large outburst may have been shaped in a similar way. With FORS1 at the VLT we have tried for the first time to measure the magnetic field variation over the pulsation cycle in six roAp stars to begin the study of how the magnetic field and pulsation interact. For the star HD101065, which has one of the highest photometric pulsation amplitudes of any roAp star, we found a signal at the known photometric pulsation frequency at the 3 sigma level in one data set; however this could not be confirmed by later observations. A preliminary simple calculation of the expected magnetic variations over the pulsation cycle suggests that they are of the same order as our current noise levels, leading us to expect that further observations with increased S/N have a good chance of achieving an unequivocal detection., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Magnetic fields play a key role in the pulsations of rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars since they are a necessary ingredient of all pulsation excitation mechanisms proposed so far. This implies that the proper understanding of the seismological behaviour of the roAp stars requires knowledge of their magnetic fields. However, the magnetic fields of the roAp stars are not well studied. We present K'-band observations of five Mira stars with the IOTA interferometer. The interferograms were obtained with the FLUOR fiber optics beam combiner, which provides high-accuracy visibility measurements in spite of time-variable atmospheric conditions. For the M-type Miras X Oph, R Aql, RU Her, R Ser, and the C-type Mira V CrB we derived the uniform-disk diameters 11.7mas, 10.9mas, 8.4mas, 8.1mas, and 7.9mas (+/- 0.3mas), respectively. Simultaneous photometric observations yielded the bolometric fluxes. The derived angular Rosseland radii and the bolometric fluxes allowed the determination of effective temperatures. For instance, the effective temperature of R Aql was determined to be 2970 +/- 110 K. A linear Rosseland radius for R Aql of (250 +100/-60) Rsun was derived from the angular Rosseland radius of 5.5mas +/- 0.2mas and the HIPPARCOS parallax of 4.73mas +/- 1.19mas. The observations were compared with theoretical Mira star models of Bessel et al. (1996) and Hofmann et al. (1998). We present feasibility studies to directly image stellar surface features, which are caused by magnetic activity, with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). We concentrate on late type magnetically active stars, for which the distribution of starspots on the surface has been inferred from photometric and spectroscopic imaging analysis. The study of the surface spot evolution during consecutive rotation cycles will allow first direct measurements (apart from the Sun) of differential rotation which is the central ingredient of magnetic dynamo processes. The VLTI will provide baselines of up to 200 m, and two scientific instruments for interferometric studies at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. Imaging capabilities will be made possible by closure-phase techniques. We conclude that a realistically modeled cool surface spot can be detected on stars with angular diameters exceeding ~2 mas using the VLTI with the first generation instrument AMBER. The spot parameters can then be derived with reasonable accuracy. We discuss that the lack of knowledge of magnetically active stars of the required angular size, especially in the southern hemisphere, is a current limitation for VLTI observations of these surface features., Comment: Submitted to AN (refereed proceedings of "1st Potsdam Thinkshop on Sunspots and Starspots", Potsdam, Germany, May 2002), 10 pages

Cepheids are the primary distance indicators for extragalactic astronomy and therefore are of very high astrophysical interest. Unfortunately, they are rare stars, situated very far from Earth.Though they are supergiants, their typical angular diameter is only a few milliarcseconds, making them very challenging targets even for long-baseline interferometers. We report observations that were obtained in the K prime band (2-2.3 microns), on the Cepheid Zeta Geminorum with the FLUOR beam combiner, installed at the IOTA interferometer. The mean uniform disk angular diameter was measured to be 1.64 +0.14 -0.16 mas. Pulsational variations are not detected at a significant statistical level, but future observations with longer baselines should allow a much better estimation of their amplitude. The distance to Zeta Gem is evaluated using Baade-Wesselink diameter determinations, giving a distance of 502 +/- 88 pc., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

The mass loss from massive stars is not understood well. Eta Carinae is a unique object for studying the massive stellar wind during the luminous blue variable phase. It is also an eccentric binary with a period of 5.54 yr. The nature of both stars is uncertain, although we know from X-ray studies that there is a wind-wind collision whose properties change with orbital phase. Aims. We want to investigate the structure and kinematics of Car's primary star wind and wind-wind collision zone with a high spatial resolution of approx.6 mas (approx.14 au) and high spectral resolution of R = 12 000. Methods. Observations of Car were carried out with the ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and the AMBER instrument between approximately five and seven months before the August 2014 periastron passage. Velocity-resolved aperture-synthesis images were reconstructed from the spectrally dispersed interferograms. Interferometric studies can provide information on the binary orbit, the primary wind, and the wind collision. Results. We present velocity-resolved aperture-synthesis images reconstructed in more than 100 di erent spectral channels distributed across the Br(gamma) 2.166 micron emission line. The intensity distribution of the images strongly depends on wavelength. At wavelengths corresponding to radial velocities of approximately -140 to -376 km/s measured relative to line center, the intensity distribution has a fan-shaped structure. At the velocity of -277 km/s, the position angle of the symmetry axis of the fan is 126. The fan-shaped structure extends approximately 8.0 mas (approx.18:8 au) to the southeast and 5.8 mas (approx.13:6 au) to the northwest, measured along the symmetry axis at the 16% intensity contour. The shape of the intensity distributions suggests that the obtained images are the first direct images of the innermost wind-wind collision zone. Therefore, the observations provide velocity-dependent image structures that can be used to test three-dimensional hydrodynamical, radiative transfer models of the massive interacting winds of Eta Car.

MATISSE is the second-generation mid-infrared spectrograph and imager for the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) at Paranal. This new interferometric instrument will allow significant advances by opening new avenues in various fundamental research fields: studying the planet-forming region of disks around young stellar objects, understanding the surface structures and mass loss phenomena affecting evolved stars, and probing the environments of black holes in active galactic nuclei. As a first breakthrough, MATISSE will enlarge the spectral domain of current optical interferometers by offering the L and M bands in addition to the N band. This will open a wide wavelength domain, ranging from 2.8 to 13 microns, exploring angular scales as small as 3 mas (L band) 10 mas (N band). As a second breakthrough, MATISSE will allow mid-infrared imaging - closure-phase aperture-synthesis imaging - with up to four Unit Telescopes (UT) or Auxiliary Telescopes (AT) of the VLTI. Moreover, MATISSE will offer a spectral resolution range from R approx. 30 to R approx. 5000. Here, we present one of the main science objectives, the study of protoplanetary disks, that has driven the instrument design and motivated several VLTI upgrades (GRA4MAT and NAOMI). We introduce the physical concept of MATISSE including a description of the signal on the detectors and an evaluation of the expected performances. We also discuss the current status of the MATISSE instrument, which is entering its testing phase, and the foreseen schedule for the next two years that will lead to the first light at Paranal.
