The star BD+29 1748 was resolved to be a close binary from its occultation by the asteroid 87 Sylvia on 2006 December 18 UT. Four telescopes were used to observe this event at two sites separated by some 80 km apart. Two flux drops were observed at one site, whereas only one flux drop was detected at the other. From the long-term variation of Sylvia, we inferred the probable shape of the shadow during the occultation, and this in turn constrains the binary parameters: the two components of BD+29 1748 have a projected separation of 0.097" to 0.110" on the sky with a position angle 104 deg to 107 deg. The asteroid was clearly resolved with a size scale ranging from 130 to 290 km, as projected onto the occultation direction. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will be a large, wide-field ground-based system designed to obtain, starting in 2015, multiple images of the sky that is visible from Cerro Pachon in Northern Chile. About 90% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode which will observe a 20,000 deg$^2$ region about 1000 times during the anticipated 10 years of operations (distributed over six bands, $ugrizy$). Each 30-second long visit will deliver 5$\sigma$ depth for point sources of $r\sim24.5$ on average. The co-added map will be about 3 magnitudes deeper, and will include 10 billion galaxies and a similar number of stars. We discuss various measurements that will be automatically performed for these 20 billion sources, and how they can be used for classification and determination of source physical and other properties. We provide a few classification examples based on SDSS data, such as color classification of stars, color-spatial proximity search for wide-angle binary stars, orbital-color classification of asteroid families, and the recognition of main Galaxy components based on the distribution of stars in the position-metallicity-kinematics space. Guided by these examples, we anticipate that two grand classification challenges for LSST will be 1) rapid and robust classification of sources detected in difference images, and 2) {\it simultaneous} treatment of diverse astrometric and photometric time series measurements for an unprecedentedly large number of objects., Comment: Presented at the "Classification and Discovery in Large Astronomical Surveys" meeting, Ringberg Castle, 14-17 October, 2008

The Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey (TAOS) operates four fully automatic telescopes to search for occultations of stars by Kuiper Belt Objects. It is a versatile facility that is also useful for the study of initial optical GRB afterglows. We present multi-color optical and two-frequency radio observations of the bright SAX event, GRB 990510. The well-sampled optical decay, together with the radio observations are inconsistent with simple spherical afterglow models. The achromatic optical steepening and the decay of the radio afterglow both occuring at $t \sim 1$ day are evidence for hydrodynamical evolution of the source, and can be most easily interpreted by models where the GRB ejecta are collimated in a jet. Employing a simple jet model to interpret the observations, we derive a jet opening angle of $\theta_o = 0.08$, reducing the isotropic gamma-ray emission of $2.9 \times 10^{53}$ erg by a factor $\sim 300$. If the jet interpretation is correct, we conclude that GRB observations to-date are consistent with an energy for the central source of $E \lsim 10^{52}$ erg., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures. The MACHO Project monitors millions of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the Small Magellanic Cloud and the bulge of the Milky Way searching for the gravitational microlensing signature of baryonic dark matter. This Project has yielded surprising results. An analysis of two years of data monitoring the Large Magellanic Cloud points to {approximately} 50% of the mass of the Milky Way`s halo in compact objects of {approximately} 0.5 solar mass. An analysis of one year of monitoring the bulge has yielded more microlensing than predicted without invocation of a massive bar or significant disk dark matter. The huge database of light curves created by this search is yielding information on extremely rare types of astrophysical variability as well as providing temporal detail for the study of well known variable astrophysical phenomena. The variable star catalog created from this database is previewed and example light curves are presented. 31 refs., 7 figs., 1 tab.

MAssive Compact Halo Objects such as brown dwarfs, Jupiters, and black holes are prime candidates to comprise the dark halo of our galaxy. Paczynski noted that objects (dubbed MACHOs) with masses in the range $10^{-6}M_\odot < M \simlt 100 M_\odot$. can be detected via gravitational microlensing of stars in the Magellanic Clouds with the caveat that only about one in $10^6$ stars will be lensed at any given time. Our group has recently begun a search for microlensing using a refurbished 1.27 meter telescope at the Mount Stromlo Observatory in Australia. Since the summer of 1992, we have been imaging up to $10^7$ stars a night in the Large Magellanic Cloud using our large format two-color $3.4\times 10^7$ pixel CCD camera. Here I report on our first results based on an analysis of $\sim 10^6$ of these stars. Although this is not enough data to make definitive statements about the nature of the dark matter, we are able to conclude that the rate of variable star background events is not larger than the expected MACHO signal., et. al., 7 pages, UCRL-JC-11113606

Most of the mass near the Sun takes the form of stars less luminous than the Sun. A central problem of Galactic astronomy is the determination of how much mass these stars contain.The only thoroughly reliable way of detecting mass is through its gravitational field. Classically this has been done by studying the Galaxy’s rotation curve and the Oort limit, both of which remain active areas of research. In the last few years an exciting new way of probing the Galaxy’s gravitational field has been opened up by large surveys for microlensing events. These surveys are yielding important information about the numbers of low-mass objects both in the disk and above it. Another truly dynamical probe for low-luminosity objects is provided by studies of clusters. JD 10 reviewed what we have learned about the density of low-luminosity stars from each of these approaches.An important orthogonal approach to determining the density of low-luminosity stars involves seperately determining the luminosity function and the mass-luminosity relation for stars of a given spectral class (e.g. main-sequence stars) and then combining them to obtain the mass function. The development of infrared detectors and the refurbishment of the The Hubble Space Telescope have recently yielded important advances in each of these areas. A major difficulty with this line of research is the fact that, in the neighbourhood of M = 0.08 Mʘ, the main-sequence mass-luminosity relation is (i) steep and non-linear, and (ii) dependent not only on the masses of the faintest stars, but also on their ages, metallicities, rotation rates, binarity etc. Moreover, cool low-luminosity stars have extremely complex spectra, which are difficult to simulate with radiative transfer calculations. Similar difficulties are encountered in the determination of the mass-luminosity relation for white dwarfs. JD 10 reviewed the current status of these very difficult problems.

We measure the ratio of ~ 5M⊙ blue and red LMC supergiants (representative of classical Cepheids) using the MACHO Project's 9 million star color-magnitude diagram (9M CMD) of the LMC bar. We find b/r = 0.39, which favors the Z=0.008, 5M⊙ theoretical model of Schaerer et al. (1993) over that of Fagatto et al. (1994). Next, we examine the low mass (old) and low metallicity LMC field population (Pop. II). Features in the 9M CMD and properties of LMC field RRab variables are consistent with a mean iron abundance of [Fe/H] ≈ −1.5 dex for this population. Newly discovered post-HB/early-AGB Pop. II variables are identified in order to delineate the instability strip (IS). Good agreement with the theoretical IS of Bono et al. (1997) is found. We then compare the field RRab with newly identified RRab variables in the LMC clusters NGC 1898 and NGC 1835. We find the mean colors of these cluster RRab lie near the red and blue edges of the IS, respectively, which is similar to their respective (overall) red and blue HB morphologies. Since the field RRab lie on the red side of the IS, we infer the LMC field Pop. II is likely to have a red HB morphology.
