As the closest $L^{\ast}$ galaxy to our own Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy (M31) is an ideal laboratory for studies of galaxy evolution. The AMIGA project has recently provided observations of the cool ($T\sim10^4$ K) phase of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of M31, using HST/COS absorption spectra along $\sim40$ background QSO sightlines, located up to and beyond the galaxy virial radius. Based on these data, and by the means of semi-analytic models and Bayesian inference, we provide here a physical description of the origin and dynamics of the cool CGM of M31. We investigate two competing scenarios, in which (i) the cool gas is mostly produced by supernova(SN)-driven galactic outflows or (ii) it mostly originates from infall of gas from the intergalactic medium. In both cases, we take into account the effect of gravity and hydrodynamical interactions with a hot corona, which has a cosmologically motivated angular momentum. We compare the outputs of our models to the observed covering factor, silicon column density and velocity distribution of the AMIGA absorbers. We find that, to explain the observations, the outflow scenario requires an unphysically large (> 100\%) efficiency for SN feedback. Our infall models, on the other hand, can consistently account for the AMIGA observations and the predicted accretion rate, angular momentum and metallicity are consistent with a cosmological infall from the intergalactic medium., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present new 3-mm continuum and molecular lines observations from the ATOMS survey towards the massive protostellar clump, MM1, located in the filamentary infrared dark cloud (IRDC), G034.43+00.24 (G34). The lines observed are the tracers of either dense gas (e.g. HCO+/H13CO+ J = 1-0) or outflows (e.g. CS J = 2-1). The most complete picture to date of seven cores in MM1 is revealed by dust continuum emission. These cores are found to be gravitationally bound, with virial parameter, $\alpha_{vir}, Comment: 14 pages with 6 figures, and in press

We apply a spectral stacking technique to Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope observations to measure the neutral atomic hydrogen content (HI) of nearby galaxies in and around galaxy groups at $z < 0.11$. Our sample includes 577 optically-selected galaxies (120 isolated galaxies and 457 satellites) covering stellar masses between 10$^{10}$ and 10$^{11.5}$ M$_{\odot}$, cross-matched with Yang's group catalogue, with angular and redshift positions from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that the satellites in the centres of groups have lower HI masses at fixed stellar mass and morphology (characterised by the inverse concentration index) relative to those at larger radii. These trends persist for satellites in both high-mass ($M_{\rm halo} > 10^{13.5}h^{-1}$M$_{\odot}$) and low-mass ($M_{\rm halo} \leqslant 10^{13.5}h^{-1}$M$_{\odot}$) groups, but disappear if we only consider group members in low local density ($\Sigma, Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables

We estimate the 3D density profile of the Galactic dark matter (DM) halo within $r \lesssim 30$ kpc from the Galactic centre by using the astrometric data for halo RR Lyrae stars from Gaia DR2. We model both the stellar halo distribution function and the Galactic potential, fully taking into account the survey selection function, the observational errors, and the missing line-of-sight velocity data for RR Lyrae stars. With a Bayesian MCMC method, we infer the model parameters, including the density flattening of the DM halo $q$, which is assumed to be constant as a function of radius. We find that 99\% of the posterior distribution of $q$ is located at $q>0.963$, which strongly disfavours a flattened DM halo. We cannot draw any conclusions as to whether the Galactic DM halo at $r \lesssim 30$ kpc is prolate, because we restrict ourselves to axisymmetric oblate halo models with $q\leq1$. Our result is inconsistent with predictions from cosmological hydrodynamical simulations that advocate more oblate ($\langle{q}\rangle \sim0.8 \pm 0.15$) DM halos within $\sim 15\%$ of the virial radius for Milky-Way-sized galaxies. An alternative possibility, based on our validation tests with a cosmological simulation, is that the true value $q$ of the Galactic halo could be consistent with cosmological simulations but that disequilibrium in the Milky Way potential is inflating our measurement of $q$ by 0.1-0.2. As a by-product of our analysis, our model constrains the DM density in the Solar neighbourhood to be $��_{\mathrm{DM},\odot} = (9.01^{+0.18}_{-0.20})\times10^{-3}M_\odot \mathrm{pc}^{-3} = 0.342^{+0.007}_{-0.007}$ $\;\mathrm{GeV} \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$., MNRAS submitted. 15 pages (plus Appendix 7 pages). 6 figures (plus 10 figures in Appendix). The circumgalactic medium (CGM) encodes signatures of the galaxy-formation process, including the interaction of galactic outflows driven by stellar and supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback with the gaseous halo. Moving beyond spherically symmetric radial profiles, we study the \textit{angular} dependence of CGM properties around $z=0$ massive galaxies in the IllustrisTNG simulations. We characterize the angular signal of density, temperature, and metallicity of the CGM as a function of galaxy stellar mass, halo mass, distance, and SMBH mass, via stacking. TNG predicts that the CGM is anisotropic in its thermodynamical properties and chemical content over a large mass range, $M_*\sim10^{10-11.5}M_\odot$. Along the minor axis directions, gas density is diluted, whereas temperature and metallicity are enhanced. These feedback-induced anisotropies in the CGM have a magnitude of $0.1-0.3$ dex, extend out to the halo virial radius, and peak at Milky Way-like masses, $M_*\sim10^{10.8}M_\odot$. In TNG, this mass scale corresponds to the onset of efficient SMBH feedback and the production of strong outflows. By comparing the anisotropic signals predicted by TNG versus other simulations -- Illustris and EAGLE -- we find that each simulation produces distinct signatures and mass dependencies, implying that this phenomenon is sensitive to the underlying physical models. Finally, we explore X-ray emission as an observable of this CGM anistropy, finding that future X-ray observations, including the eROSITA all-sky survey, will be able to detect and characterize this signal, particularly in terms of an angular modulation of the X-ray hardness., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures + Appendix. Young stellar clusters across nearly five orders of magnitude in mass appear to follow a power-law mass-radius relationship (MRR), $R_{\star} \propto M_{\star}^{\alpha}$, with $\alpha \approx 0.2 - 0.33$. We develop a simple analytic model for the cluster mass-radius relation. We consider a galaxy disc in hydrostatic equilibrium, which hosts a population of molecular clouds that fragment into clumps undergoing cluster formation and feedback-driven expansion. The model predicts a mass-radius relation of $R_{\star} \propto M_{\star}^{1/2}$ and a dependence on the kpc-scale gas surface density $R_{\star} \propto \Sigma_{\rm g}^{-1/2}$, which results from the formation of more compact clouds (and cluster-forming clumps within) at higher gas surface densities. This environmental dependence implies that the high-pressure environments in which the most massive clusters can form also induce the formation of clusters with the smallest radii, thereby shallowing the observed MRR at high-masses towards the observed $R_{\star} \propto M_{\star}^{1/3}$. At low cluster masses, relaxation-driven expansion induces a similar shallowing of the MRR. We combine our predicted MRR with a simple population synthesis model and apply it to a variety of star-forming environments, finding good agreement. Our model predicts that the high-pressure formation environments of globular clusters at high redshift naturally led to the formation of clusters that are considerably more compact than those in the local Universe, thereby increasing their resilience to tidal shock-driven disruption and contributing to their survival until the present day., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. In 1995, it was suggested that some of the baryonic dark matter in galaxies may be in the form of molecular hydrogen clouds, and a mechanism for observing them had been given. In the same year, a novel method of seeing the clouds was proposed, that is to look for a temperature asymmetry in the cosmic microwave background towards the M31 galaxy, due to a “Doppler effect” induced by the M31 halo rotation. This temperature asymmetry has since been seen and confirmed in M31 and other galaxies, and used to study the rotation of galactic haloes and map their dynamics. It had been questioned whether such clouds could actually exist, and in response, the clouds were modeled and shown to be possible. It then becomes necessary to trace the evolution of those clouds from their formation to the modern day. Here, the development of the ideas is reviewed.

Observed rotation curves in star-forming galaxies indicate a puzzling dearth of dark matter in extended flat cores within haloes of mass $\geq\! 10^{12}M_\odot$ at $z\!\sim\! 2$. This is not reproduced by current cosmological simulations, and supernova-driven outflows are not effective in such massive haloes. We address a hybrid scenario where post-compaction merging satellites heat up the dark-matter cusps by dynamical friction, allowing AGN-driven outflows to generate cores. Using analytic and semi-analytic models (SatGen), we estimate the dynamical-friction heating as a function of satellite compactness for a cosmological sequence of mergers. Cosmological simulations (VELA) demonstrate that satellites of initial virial masses $>\!10^{11.3}M_\odot$, that undergo wet compactions, become sufficiently compact for significant heating. Constituting a major fraction of the accretion onto haloes $\geq\!10^{12}M_\odot$, these satellites heat-up the cusps in half a virial time at $z\!\sim\! 2$. Using a model for outflow-driven core formation (CuspCore), we demonstrate that the heated dark-matter cusps develop extended cores in response to removal of half the gas mass, while the more compact stellar systems remain intact. The mergers keep the dark matter hot, while the gas supply, fresh and recycled, is sufficient for the AGN outflows. AGN indeed become effective in haloes $\geq\!10^{12}M_\odot$, where the black-hole growth is no longer suppressed by supernovae and its compaction-driven rapid growth is maintained by a hot CGM. For simulations to reproduce the dynamical-friction effects, they should resolve the compaction of the massive satellites and avoid artificial tidal disruption. Ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) were serendipitously discovered by spectroscopic surveys in the Fornax cluster twenty years ago. Nowadays, it is commonly accepted that many bright UCDs are the nuclei of galaxies that have been stripped. However, this conclusion might be driven by biased samples of UCDs in high-density environments, on which most searches are based. With the deep optical images of the Fornax Deep Survey, combined with public near-infrared data, we revisit the UCD population of the Fornax cluster and search for UCD candidates, for the first time, systematically out to the virial radius of the galaxy cluster. Our search is complete down to magnitude m$_g$ = 21 mag or M$_g$ $\sim$ -10.5 mag at the distance of the Fornax cluster. The UCD candidates are identified and separated from foreground stars and background galaxies by their optical and near-infrared colours. This primarily utilizes the $u-i$/$i-Ks$ diagram and a machine learning technique is employed to incorporate other colour combinations to reduce the number of contaminants. The newly identified candidates (44) in addition to the spectroscopically confirmed UCDs (61), increases the number of known Fornax UCD considerably (105). Almost all of the new UCD candidates are located outside the Fornax cluster core (360 kpc), where all of the known UCDs were found. The distribution of UCDs within the Fornax cluster shows that a population of UCDs may form in low-density environments. We present an empirical model for the number of globular clusters (GCs) in galaxies based on recent data showing a tight relationship between dark matter halo virial masses and GC numbers. While a simple base model forming GCs in low-mass haloes reproduces this relation, we show that a second formation pathway for GCs is needed to account for observed younger GC populations. We confirm previous works that reported the observed linear correlation as being a consequence of hierarchical merging and its insensitivity to the exact GC formation processes at higher virial masses, even for a dual formation scenario. We find that the scatter of the linear relation is strongly correlated with the relative amount of smooth accretion: the more dark matter is smoothly accreted, the fewer GCs a halo has compared to other haloes of the same mass. This scatter is smaller than that introduced by halo mass measurements, indicating that the number of GCs in a galaxy is a good tracer for its dark matter mass. Smooth accretion is also the reason for a lower average dark matter mass per GC in low-mass haloes. Finally, we successfully reproduce the observed general trend of GCs being old and the tendency of more massive haloes hosting older GC systems. Including the second GC formation mechanism through gas-rich mergers leads to a more realistic variety of GC age distributions and also introduces an age inversion in the halo virial mass range $\log M_\mathrm{vir}/\mathrm{M}_\odot = 11{-}13$., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a comparison of the physical properties of the ionized gas in the circumgalactic medium and intergalactic medium (IGM) at z ∼ 0 between observations and four cosmological hydrodynamical simulations: Illustris, TNG300 of the IllustrisTNG project, EAGLE, and one of the Magneticum simulations. For the observational data, we use the gas properties that are inferred from cross-correlating the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect (SZE) from the Planck CMB maps with haloes and large-scale structure. Both the observational and simulation results indicate that the integrated gas pressure in haloes deviates from the self-similar case, showing that feedback impacts haloes with $M_{500}\sim 10^{12\!-\!13}\, {\rm M_\odot }$. The simulations predict that more than half the baryons are displaced from haloes, while the gas fraction inferred from our observational data roughly equals the cosmic baryon fraction throughout the $M_{500}\sim 10^{12\!-\!14.5}\, {\rm M_\odot }$ halo mass range. All simulations tested here predict that the mean gas temperature in haloes is about the virial temperature, while that inferred from the SZE is up to one order of magnitude lower than that from the simulations (and also from X-ray observations). While a remarkable agreement is found for the average properties of the IGM between the observation and some simulations, we show that their dependence on the large-scale tidal field can break the degeneracy between models that show similar predictions otherwise. Finally, we show that the gas pressure and the electron density profiles from simulations are not well described by a generalized NFW profile. Instead, we present a new model with a mass-dependent shape that fits the profiles accurately.

Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are potential hosts of the elusive early phases of high-mass star formation (HMSF). Here we conduct an in-depth analysis of the fragmentation properties of a sample of 10 IRDCs, which have been highlighted as some of the best candidates to study HMSF within the Milky Way. To do so, we have obtained a set of large mosaics covering these IRDCs with ALMA at band 3 (or 3mm). These observations have a high angular resolution (~3arcsec or ~0.05pc), and high continuum and spectral line sensitivity (~0.15mJy/beam and ~0.2K per 0.1km/s channel at the N2H+(1-0) transition). From the dust continuum emission, we identify 96 cores ranging from low- to high-mass (M = 3.4 to 50.9Msun) that are gravitationally bound (alpha_vir = 0.3 to 1.3) and which would require magnetic field strengths of B = 0.3 to 1.0mG to be in virial equilibrium. We combine these results with a homogenised catalogue of literature cores to recover the hierarchical structure within these clouds over four orders of magnitude in spatial scale (0.01pc to 10pc). Using supplementary observations at an even higher angular resolution, we find that the smallest fragments (16Msun without further fragmentation. These high-mass cores contain trans-sonic non-thermal motions, are kinematically sub-virial, and require moderate magnetic field strengths for support against collapse. The identification of these potential sites of high-mass star formation represents a key step in allowing us to test the predictions from high-mass star and cluster formation theories., 21(+6 in appendix) pages, 12(+3) figures, 3(+3) tables. By way of the projected phase-space (PPS), we investigate the relation between galaxy properties and cluster environment in a subsample of groups from the Yang Catalog. The sample is split according to the gaussianity of the velocity distribution in the group into gaussian (G) and non-gaussian (NG). Our sample is limited to massive clusters with $\rm M_{200} \geq 10^{14} M_{\odot}$ and $\rm 0.03\leq z \leq 0.1$. NG clusters are more massive, less concentrated and have an excess of faint galaxies compared to G clusters. NG clusters show mixed distributions of galaxy properties in the PPS compared to the G case. Using the relation between infall time and locus on the PPS, we find that, on average, NG clusters accreted $\rm \sim 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$ more stellar mass in the last $\sim 5$ Gyr than G clusters. The relation between galaxy properties and infall time is significantly different for galaxies in G and NG systems. The more mixed distribution in the PPS of NG clusters translates into shallower relations with infall time. Faint galaxies whose first crossing of the cluster virial radius happened 2-4 Gyr ago in NG clusters are older and more metal-rich than in G systems. All these results suggest that NG clusters experience a higher accretion of pre-processed galaxies, which characterizes G and NG clusters as different environments to study galaxy evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 17 pages, 9 Figures

Using our HST/ACS observations of the recently found isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we homogeneously measured their star formation histories. We determined star formation rate as a function of time, as well as age and metallicity of the stellar populations. All objects demonstrate complex star formation history, with a significant portion of stars formed 10-13 Gyr ago. Nevertheless, stars of middle ages (1-8 Gyr) are presented. In order to understand how the star formation parameters influence the evolution of dSphs, we also studied a sample of nearest dSphs in different environment: isolated (d < 2 Mpc); beyond the Local Group virial radius (but within the Local Group zero velocity sphere); and the satellites of M 31 located within the virial zone (300 kpc). Using archival HST/ACS observations, we measured their star formation histories. In this work we aim at investigating the effects of baryons on the dark matter (DM) haloes structure, focusing on the correlation between the presence and importance of stellar discs and the halo shapes. We study the properties of a subsample of DM haloes from Fenix and EAGLE cosmological simulations. We inspect the central regions of haloes in the mass range [10.9 - 992.3] x 10^{10} Msun at z=0, comparing the hydrodynamic runs and their dark matter only (DMo) counterparts. Our results indicate that baryons have a significant impact on the shape of the inner halo, mainly within ~ 20 percent of the virial radius. We find haloes to be more spherical when hosting baryons. While the impact of baryons depends on the mass of the haloes, we also find a trend with morphology which suggests that the way baryons are assembled is also relevant in agreement with previous works. Our findings also indicate that disc galaxies preferentially form in haloes whose DMo counterparts were originally more spherical and with stronger velocity anisotropy. The presence of baryons alter the orbital structure of the DM particles of the haloes, which show a decrease in their velocity anisotropy, towards more tangentially biased orbits. This relative decrease is weaker in the case of disc-dominated galaxies. Our results point out to a cosmological connection between the final morphology of galaxies and the intrinsic properties of their DM haloes, which gets reinforce by the growth of the discs., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, published after revision in MNRAS

We use a high-resolution cosmological dark matter-only simulation to study the orbital trajectories of haloes and subhaloes in the environs of isolated hosts. We carefully tally all apsis points and use them to distinguish haloes that are infalling for the first time from those that occupy more evolved orbits. We find that roughly 21 per cent of subhaloes within a host's virial radius are currently on first infall, and have not yet reached their first orbital pericentre; roughly 44 per cent are still approaching their first apocentre after infall. For the range of host masses studied, roughly half of all accreted systems were pre-processed prior to infall, and about 20 per cent were accreted in groups. We confirm that the entire population of accreted subhaloes -- often referred to as "associated" subhaloes -- extend far beyond the virial radii of their hosts, with roughly half currently residing at distances that exceed $\approx 1.2\times r_{200}$. Many of these backsplash haloes have gained orbital energy since infall, and occupy extreme orbits that carry them well past their initial turnaround radii. Such extreme orbits are created during the initial accretion and dissolution of loosely bound groups, but also through penetrating encounters between subhaloes on subsequent orbits. The same processes may also give rise to unexpectedly abrupt losses of orbital energy. These effects combine, giving rise to a large variation in the ratio of sequent apocentres for accreted systems. We find that, within 2 virial radii from host centres, the concentrations of first-infall halos are remarkably similar those of isolated field halos, whereas backsplash haloes, as well as systems that were pre-processed, are considerably more concentrated., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present constraints on a simple analytical model for hot diffuse halo gas, derived from a fit spanning two orders of magnitude in halo mass ($M_{500} \sim 10^{12.5}-10^{14.5} M_{\odot}$). The model is motivated by the observed prevalence of a precipitation limit, and its main free parameter is the central ratio of gas cooling timescale to free-fall timescale ($t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff}$). We use integrated X-ray and thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich observations of the environments around massive galaxies, galaxy groups and clusters, averaged in halo mass bins, and obtain the best-fitting model parameters. We find $t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff} \sim 50-110$, depending on the model extrapolation beyond the halo virial radius and possibly on biases present in the data-sets used in the fitting analysis. The model adequately describes the entire mass range, except for intermediate mass halos ($M_{500} \sim 10^{13.5} M_{\odot}$) which systematically fall below the model predictions. However, the best fits for $t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff}$ substantially exceed the values typically derived from X-ray observations of individual systems ($t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff} \sim 10-30$). We consider several explanations for those discrepancies, including X-ray selection biases and a potential anti-correlation between X-ray luminosity and the central galaxy's stellar mass., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. A comparison of the virial parameters of galaxies and galaxy clusters (radius, density, and entropy function) in a wide range of masses, $${{10}^{6}} \leqslant {{M}_{{{\text{vir}}}}}{\text{/}}{{M}_{ \odot }} \leqslant {{10}^{{14}}}$$ , shows that these parameters are correlated and depend on the virial mass of an object in a regular way. For the observed galaxies and galaxy clusters the available estimates of virial parameters are quite close to each other and the values of reduced virial density Gρ are concentrated in a shallow interval $$0.5 \leqslant {{G}_{\rho }}{\text{/}}\langle {{G}_{\rho }}\rangle \leqslant 2$$ around its mean value. This “virial” paradox sharpen when compared with simulations, in which the number of such objects is very small, and for the majority of dark matter halos these densities are ~50–100 times smaller. Our theoretical analysis shows possible reasons for this discrepancy of observations and simulations, pointing out its connection with the spectrum of cosmological perturbations. After some refinement, the considered data can be used to constrain models of cosmological inflation. A number of accompanying questions is discussed.

Recently, two-component spherical galaxy models have been presented, where the stellar profile is described by a Jaffe law, and the total density by another Jaffe law, or by an $r^{-3}$ law at large radii. We extend these two families to their ellipsoidal axisymmetric counterparts: the JJe and J3e models. The total and stellar density distributions can have different flattenings and scale lengths, and the dark matter halo is defined by difference. First, the analytical conditions required to have a nowhere negative dark matter halo density are derived. The Jeans equations for the stellar component are then solved analytically, in the limit of small flattenings, also in presence of a central BH. The azimuthal velocity dispersion anisotropy is described by the Satoh $k$-decomposition. Finally, we present the analytical formulae for velocity fields near the center and at large radii, together with the various terms entering the Virial Theorem. The JJe and J3e models can be useful in a number of theoretical applications, e.g. to explore the role of the various parameters (flattening, relative scale lengths, mass ratios, rotational support) in determining the behavior of the stellar kinematical fields before performing more time-expensive integrations with specific galaxy models, to test codes of stellar dynamics, and in numerical simulations of gas flows in galaxies., 21 pages, 10 figures. Dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) with extreme infrared luminosities may represent a key phase in the co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes. We select 12 DOGs at $0.3\lesssim z\lesssim1.0$ with broad Mg II or H$\beta$ emission lines and investigate their X-ray properties utilizing snapshot observations ($\sim3~\mathrm{ks}$ per source) with Chandra. By assuming that the broad lines are broadened due to virial motions of broad-line regions, we find that our sources generally have high Eddington ratios ($\lambda_\mathrm{Edd}$). Our sources generally have moderate intrinsic X-ray luminosities ($L_\mathrm{X}\lesssim10^{45}~\mathrm{erg~s^{-1}}$), which are similar to those of other DOGs, but are more obscured. They also present moderate outflows and intense starbursts. Based on these findings, we conclude that high-$\lambda_\mathrm{Edd}$ DOGs are closer to the peaks of both host-galaxy and black-hole growth compared to other DOGs, and that AGN feedback has not swept away their reservoirs of gas. However, we cannot fully rule out the possibility that the broad lines are broadened by outflows, at least for some sources. We investigate the relations among $L_\mathrm{X}$, AGN rest-frame $6~\mathrm{\mu m}$ monochromatic luminosity, and AGN bolometric luminosity, and find the relations are consistent with the expected ones., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an analytic toy model for the radiation produced by the interaction between the cold streams thought to feed massive halos at high redshift and their hot CGM. We begin by deriving cosmologically motivated parameters for the streams as they enter the halo virial radius, $R_{\rm v}$, as a function of halo mass and redshift. For $10^{12}M_{\odot}$ halos at $z=2$, we find the Hydrogen number density in streams to be $n_{\rm H,s}\sim (0.1-5)\times 10^{-2}{\rm cm}^{-3}$, a factor of $\delta \sim (30-300)$ times denser than the hot CGM density, while the stream radii are in the range $R_{\rm s}\sim (0.03-0.50)R_{\rm v}$. As the streams accelerate towards the halo centre, they become denser and narrower. The stream-CGM interaction induces Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI), which leads to entrainment of CGM mass by the stream and therefore to stream deceleration by momentum conservation. Assuming that the entrainment rates derived by Mandelker et al. 2019 in the absence of gravity can be applied locally at each halocentric radius, we derive equations of motion for the stream in the halo. Using these, we derive the net acceleration, mass growth, and energy dissipation induced by the stream-CGM interaction, as a function of halo mass and redshift, for different CGM density profiles. For the range of model parameters considered, we find that the interaction can induce dissipation luminosities $L_{\rm diss}>10^{42}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$ within $\le 0.6 R_{\rm v}$ of halos with $M_{\rm v}>10^{12}M_{\odot}$ at $z=2$, with the emission scaling with halo mass and redshift approximately as $\propto M_{\rm v}\,(1+z)^2$. The magnitude and spatial extent of the emission produced in massive halos at high redshift is consistent with observed Ly$\alpha$ blobs, though better treatment of the UV background and self-shielding is needed to solidify this conclusion., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, resubmitted to MNRAS with minor revisions following referee report. We report on three redshift $z>2$ quasars with dramatic changes in their C IV emission lines, the first sample of changing-look quasars (CLQs) at high redshift. This is also the first time the changing-look behaviour has been seen in a high-ionisation emission line. SDSS J1205+3422, J1638+2827, and J2228+2201 show interesting behaviour in their observed optical light curves, and subsequent spectroscopy shows significant changes in the C IV broad emission line, with both line collapse and emergence being displayed on rest-frame timescales of $\sim$240-1640 days. These are rapid changes, especially when considering virial black hole mass estimates of $M_{\rm BH} > 10^{9} M_{\odot}$ for all three quasars. Continuum and emission line measurements from the three quasars show changes in the continuum-equivalent width plane with the CLQs seen to be on the edge of the full population distribution, and showing indications of an intrinsic Baldwin effect. We put these observations in context with recent state-change models, and note that even in their observed low-state, the C IV CLQs are generally above $\sim$5\% in Eddington luminosity., 12 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables. Hydrogen Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emission has been one of the major observational probes for the high redshift universe, since the first discoveries of high-$z$ Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxies in the late 1990s. Due to the strong Ly$\alpha$ emission originated by resonant scattering and recombination of the most-abundant element, Ly$\alpha$ observations witness not only HII regions of star formation and AGN but also diffuse HI gas in the circum-galactic medium (CGM) and the inter-galactic medium (IGM). Here we review Ly$\alpha$ sources, and present theoretical interpretations reached to date. We conclude that: 1) A typical Ly$\alpha$ emitter (LAE) at $z\gtrsim 2$ with a $L^*$ Ly$\alpha$ luminosity is a high-$z$ counterpart of a local dwarf galaxy, a compact metal-poor star-forming galaxy (SFG) with an approximate stellar (halo) mass and star-formation rate of $10^{8-9} M_\odot$ ($10^{10-11} M_\odot$) and $1-10 M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, respectively; 2) High-$z$ SFGs ubiquitously have a diffuse Ly$\alpha$ emitting halo in the CGM extending to the halo virial radius and beyond; 3) Remaining neutral hydrogen at the epoch of reionization makes a strong dimming of Ly$\alpha$ emission for galaxies at $z>6$ that suggest the late reionization history. The next generation large telescope projects will combine Ly$\alpha$ emission data with HI Ly$\alpha$ absorptions and 21cm radio data that map out the majority of hydrogen (HI+HII) gas, uncovering the exchanges of i) matter by outflow/inflow and ii) radiation, relevant to cosmic reionization, between galaxies and the CGM/IGM., Comment: 45 pages, 18 figures. Globular clusters (GCs) are typically old, with most having formed at z >~ 2. This makes understanding their birth environments difficult, as they are typically too distant to observe with sufficient angular resolution to resolve GC birth sites. Using 25 cosmological zoom-in simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies from the E-MOSAICS project, with physically-motivated models for star formation, feedback, and the formation, evolution, and disruption of GCs, we identify the birth environments of present-day GCs. We find roughly half of GCs in these galaxies formed in-situ (52.0 +/- 1.0 per cent) between z ~ 2 - 4, in turbulent, high-pressure discs fed by gas that was accreted without ever being strongly heated through a virial shock or feedback. A minority of GCs form during mergers (12.6 +/- 0.6 per cent in major mergers, and 7.2 +/- 0.5 per cent in minor mergers), but we find that mergers are important for preserving the GCs seen today by ejecting them from their natal, high density interstellar medium (ISM), where proto-GCs are rapidly destroyed due to tidal shocks from ISM substructure. This chaotic history of hierarchical galaxy assembly acts to mix the spatial and kinematic distribution of GCs formed through different channels, making it difficult to use observable GC properties to distinguish GCs formed in mergers from ones formed by smooth accretion, and similarly GCs formed in-situ from those formed ex-situ. These results suggest a simple picture of GC formation, in which GCs are a natural outcome of normal star formation in the typical, gas-rich galaxies that are the progenitors of present-day galaxies., 20 pages, 20 figures, resubmitted to MNRAS after accounting for referee's comments

We use Gaia DR2 systemic proper motions of 45 satellite galaxies to constrain the mass of the Milky Way using the scale free mass estimator of Watkins et al. (2010). We first determine the anisotropy parameter $\beta$, and the tracer satellites' radial density index $\gamma$ to be $\beta$=$-0.67^{+0.45}_{-0.62}$ and $\gamma=2.11\pm0.23$. When we exclude possible former satellites of the Large Magellanic Cloud, the anisotropy changes to $\beta$=$-0.21^{+0.37}_{-0.51}$. We find that the index of the Milky Way's gravitational potential $\alpha$, which is dependent on the mass itself, is the parameter with the largest impact on the mass determination. Via comparison with cosmological simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies, we carried out a detailed analysis of the estimation of the observational uncertainties and their impact on the mass estimator. We found that the mass estimator is biased when applied naively to the satellites of simulated Milky Way halos. Correcting for this bias, we obtain for our Galaxy a mass of $0.58^{+0.15}_{-0.14}\times10^{12}$M$_\odot$ within 64 kpc, as computed from the inner half of our observational sample, and $1.43^{+0.35}_{-0.32}\times10^{12}$M$_\odot$ within 273 kpc, from the full sample; this latter value extrapolates to a virial mass of $M_\mathrm{vir\,\Delta=97}$=$1.51^{+0.45}_{-0.40} \times 10^{12}M_{\odot}$ corresponding to a virial radius of R$_\mathrm{vir}$=$308\pm29$ kpc. This value of the Milky Way mass lies in-between other mass estimates reported in the literature, from various different methods., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. We examine the nature of kpc-scale clumps seen in high-redshift galaxies using a suite of cosmological simulations of galaxy formation. We identify rest-frame UV clumps in mock HST images smoothed to 500 pc resolution, and compare them with the intrinsic 3D clumps of young stars identified in the simulations with 100 pc resolution. According to this comparison, we expect that the stellar masses of the observed clumps are overestimated by as much as an order of magnitude, and that the sizes of these clumps are also overestimated by factor of several, due to a combination of spatial resolution and projection. The masses of young stars contributing most of the UV emission can also be overestimated by factor of a few. We find that most clumps of young stars present in a simulation at one time dissolve on a timescale shorter than $\sim$150 Myr. Some clumps with dense cores can last longer but eventually disperse. Most of the clumps are not bound structures, with virial parameter $\alpha_{\rm vir}$ > 1. We find similar results for clumps identified in mock maps of H$\alpha$ emission measure. We examine the predictions for effective clump sizes from the linear theory of gravitational perturbations and conclude that they are inconsistent with being formed by global disc instabilities. Dense environments have an impact on the star formation rate of galaxies. As stars form from molecular gas, looking at the cold molecular gas content of a galaxy gives useful insights on its efficiency in forming stars. However, most galaxies observed in CO (a proxy for the cold molecular gas content) at intermediate redshifts, are field galaxies. Only a handful of studies focused on cluster galaxies. I present new results on the environment of one medium mass cluster from the EDisCS survey at $z\sim0.5$. 27 star-forming galaxies were selected to evenly sample the range of densities encountered inside and around the cluster. We cover a region extending as far as 8 virial radii from the cluster center. Indeed there is ample evidence that star formation quenching starts already beyond 3 cluster virial radius. We present the properties of magnetic fields (B-fields) in two clumps (clump 1 and clump 2), located at the waist of the bipolar H II region Sh2-201, based on JCMT SCUBA-2/POL-2 observations of 850 $\mu$m polarized dust emission. We find that B-fields in the direction of the clumps are bent and compressed, showing bow-like morphologies, which we attribute to the feedback effect of the H II region on the surface of the clumps. Using the modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method we estimate B-fields strengths of 266 $\mu$G and 65 $\mu$G for clump 1 and clump 2, respectively. From virial analyses and critical mass ratio estimates, we argue that clump 1 is gravitationally bound and could be undergoing collapse, whereas clump 2 is unbound and stable. We hypothesize that the interplay between thermal pressure imparted by the H II region, B-field morphologies, and the various internal pressures of the clumps (such as magnetic, turbulent, and gas thermal pressure), has the following consequences: (a) formation of clumps at the waist of the H II region; (b) progressive compression and enhancement of the B-fields in the clumps; (c) stronger B-fields will shield the clumps from erosion by the H II region and cause pressure equilibrium between the clumps and the H II region, thereby allowing expanding I-fronts to blow away from the filament ridge, forming bipolar H II regions; and (d) stronger B-fields and turbulence will be able to stabilize the clumps. Dark matter (DM) dominates the properties of large cosmological structures such as galaxy clusters, and the mass profiles of the DM have been inferred for these equilibrated structures for years by using cluster X-ray surface brightnesses and temperatures. A new method has been proposed, which should allow us to infer a dynamical property of the DM, namely the velocity anisotropy. For the gas, a similar velocity anisotropy is zero due to frequent collisions; however, the collisionless nature of DM allows it to be non-trivial. Numerical simulations have for years found non-zero and radially varying DM velocity anisotropies. Here we employ the method proposed by Hansen & Piffaretti, and developed by Høst et al. to infer the DM velocity anisotropy in the bright galaxy cluster Perseus, to near five times the radii previously obtained. We find the DM velocity anisotropy to be consistent with the results of numerical simulations, however, still with large error bars. At half the virial radius, we find the DM velocity anisotropy to be non-zero at 1.7$\, \sigma$, lending support to the collisionless nature of DM.

We present a suite of baryonic cosmological zoom-in simulations of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) haloes within the ``Feedback In Realistic Environment'' (FIRE) project. The three simulated haloes have virial masses of $\sim 10^{12}\, \text{M}_\odot$ at $z=0$, and we study velocity-independent self-interaction cross sections of 1 and 10 ${\rm cm^2 \, g^{-1}}$. We study star formation rates and the shape of dark matter density profiles of the parent haloes in both cold dark matter (CDM) and SIDM models. Galaxies formed in the SIDM haloes have higher star formation rates at $z\leq1$, resulting in more massive galaxies compared to the CDM simulations. While both CDM and SIDM simulations show diverse shape of the dark matter density profiles, the SIDM haloes can reach higher and more steep central densities within few kpcs compared to the CDM haloes. We identify a correlation between the build-up of the stars within the half-mass radii of the galaxies and the growth in the central dark matter densities. The thermalization process in the SIDM haloes is enhanced in the presence of a dense stellar component. Hence, SIDM haloes with highly concentrated baryonic profiles are predicted to have higher central dark matter densities than the CDM haloes. Overall, the SIDM haloes are more responsive to the presence of a massive baryonic distribution than their CDM counterparts., 10 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

It was first observed in the 1970s that the dwarf galaxies surrounding our Milky Way, so-called satellites, appear to be arranged in a thin, vast plane. Similar discoveries have been made around additional galaxies in the local Universe such as Andromeda, Centaurus A, and potentially M83. In the specific cases with available kinematic data, the dwarf satellites also appear to preferentially co-orbit their massive host galaxy. Planes of satellites are rare in the lambda cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) paradigm, although they may be a natural consequence of projection effects. Such a phase-space correlation, however, remains difficult to explain. In this work we analyzed the 2D spatial distribution of 2210 dwarf galaxies around early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the low-to-medium density fields of the "Mass Assembly of early-Type GaLAxies with their fine Structures" (MATLAS) survey. Under the assumption that the dwarfs are satellite members of the central massive ETG, we identified flattened structures using both a variation in the Hough transform and total least square (TLS) fitting. In 119 satellite systems, we find 31 statistically significant flattened dwarf structures using a combination of both methods with subsequent Monte Carlo (MC) simulations with random data. The vast majority of these dwarf structures lie within the estimated virial radii of the massive host. The major axes of these systems are aligned better than 30{\deg} with the estimated orientation of the large-scale structure in nine (50%) cases. Additional distance measurements and future kinematic studies will be required to confirm the planar nature of these structures and to determine if they are corotating systems., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Rotation of galactic objects has been seen in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) that could be ascribed to molecular hydrogen clouds with, or without, dust contamination and contamination from other sources. We model the clouds using the canonical ensemble for pure molecular hydrogen, a mixture of hydrogen helium and/or dust, in order to constrain the physical parameters of these clouds. Since the clouds are cold, we justify the use of the canonical ensemble by explicitly calculating the interaction between the hydrogen molecules and the CMB photons and determining the time required for thermal equilibrium to be reached and show that there is enough time for equilibrium to be attained.

As the dark sector remains unknown in composition and interaction between dark energy and dark matter stand out as natural, observations of galaxy clusters out of equilibrium abound, opening a promising window on these questions. We continue here the exploration of dark sector interaction detection via clusters virial equilibrium state for all clusters configurations. The dynamics of clusters is evaluated with the Layzer-Irvine equation, a simple model of an interacting dark sector and some simplifying assumptions to obtain the time-dependent part of the virial dynamics. The clusters' data are concentrated in optical weak lensing and X-ray observations that evaluate, respectively, the clusters' mass profiles and temperatures. The global inconsistency of available X-ray data led us to constitute `gold' cluster samples. Through a Bayesian analysis, they are processed to obtain consistent interaction detected up to 3$\sigma$, in compounded interaction strength for 11 clusters at $-0.027 \pm 0.009$ that translate in compounded universal equilibrium virial ratio of $-0.61^{+0.04}_{-0.03}$. The level of detection and inconsistency of X-ray data call for caution, although future instruments promise a clearer detection soon., Comment: 8 pages

In this Letter, properties of black hole (BH) mass are well checked for the interesting object SDSS J0159, a changing-look AGN and also a host galaxy of a tidal disruption event (TDE). Through spectral absorption features, the stellar velocity dispersion of SDSS J0159 can be well measured as $\sigma\sim81~{\rm km/s}$, leading to SDSS J0159 being an apparent outlier in the \msig space, because of the BH mass estimated through the \msig relation about two magnitudes lower than the reported virial BH mass of about $10^8~{\rm M_\odot}$. After considerations of contributions of stellar debris from the central TDE to broad line emission clouds, the over-estimated virial BH mass could be well explained in SDSS J0159. Therefore, over-estimated virial BH masses through broad line properties in the \msig space could be treated as interesting clues to support central TDEs., Comment: 5 pages, three figures, accepted to be published in MNRAS Letter

Models for 12 elliptical galaxies are constructed based on the second-order tensor virial theorem. This method takes into account the spatial shape and structure of the internal density layers for each galaxy. New data for the surface brightness and isophote structure of the E galaxies derived from deep photometric observations are used. A system of equations is used to find the components of the gravitational-energy, rotational-energy, and velocity-dispersion tensors. This makes it possible to calculate the anisotropy index β of the velocity dispersion of each galaxy. The values for the entire sample lie in the range 0.012 ⩽ β ⩽ 0.246. It is shown that taking into account variations in the mass-to-light ratio M/L (for the stellar component) can reduce the value of β by roughly 20%. The results are compared with those from other studies. Our values of β for small E galaxies (rapid rotators) agree with those found in the ATLAS3D project based on Jeans anisotropy models. However, our models for giant E galaxies (slow rotators) taking into account the triaxial shape and realistic structure of the density layers provide a much better agreement with observations than the simple axially symmetrical models from the SAURON project.

A standard prediction of galaxy formation theory is that the ionizing background suppresses galaxy formation in haloes with peak circular velocities smaller than Vpeak ~ 20 km/s, rendering the majority of haloes below this scale completely dark. We use a suite of cosmological zoom simulations of Milky Way-like haloes that include central Milky Way disk galaxy potentials to investigate the relationship between subhaloes and ultrafaint galaxies. We find that there are far too few subhaloes within 50 kpc of the Milky Way that had Vpeak > 20 km/s to account for the number of ultrafaint galaxies already known within that volume today. In order to match the observed count, we must populate subhaloes down to Vpeak ~ 6 km/s with ultrafaint dwarfs. The required haloes have peak virial temperatures as low as 1,500 K, well below the atomic hydrogen cooling limit of 10^4 K. Allowing for the possibility that the Large Magellanic Cloud contributes several of the satellites within 50 kpc could potentially raise this threshold to 10 km/s (4,000 K), still below the atomic cooling limit and far below the nominal reionization threshold., 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Using a compiled sample of 34 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with measured H$\beta$ time lags from the reverberation mapping (RM) method and measured bulge stellar velocity dispersions $\sigma_*$, we calculate the virial factor $f$ by assuming that the RM AGNs intrinsically obey the same $M_{\rm BH}-\sigma_*$ relation as quiescent galaxies, where $M_{\rm BH}$ is the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH). Considering four tracers of the velocity of the broad-line regions (BLRs), i.e., the H$\beta$ line width or line dispersion from the mean or rms spectrum, there are four kinds of the factor $f$. Using the \hb Full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) to trace the BLRs velocity, we find significant correlations between the factor $f$ and some observational parameters, e.g., FWHM, the line dispersion. Using the line dispersion to trace the BLRs velocity, these relations disappear or become weaker. It implies the effect of inclination in BLRs geometry. It also suggests that the variable $f$ in $M_{\rm BH}$ estimated from luminosity and FWHM in a single-epoch spectrum is not negligible. Using a simple model of thick-disk BLRs, we also find that, as the tracer of the BLRs velocity, H$\beta$ FWHM has some dependence on the inclination, while the line dispersion $\sigma_{\rm H\beta }$ is insensitive to the inclination. Considering the calibrated FWHM-based factor $f$ from the mean spectrum, the scatter of the SMBH mass is 0.39 dex for our sample of 34 low redshift RM AGNs. For a high redshift sample of 30 SDSS RM AGNs with measured stellar velocity dispersions, we find that the SMBH mass scatter is larger than that for our sample of 34 low redshift RM AGNs. It implies the possibility of evolution of the $M_{\rm BH}-\sigma_*$ relation from high-redshift to low-redshift AGNs., Comment: 15 pages, 6 tables, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Superthin galaxies are low surface brightness (LSB) bulgeless disc galaxies having stellar discs with unusually high planar-to-vertical axes ratio $b/a$ $>$ 10 - 20, the formation and evolution of which is not well-understood. We calculate the specific angular momenta of a sample of six superthins and nine other bulgeless LSBs using stellar photometry, atomic hydrogen (HI) surface density and high resolution HI rotation curves available in the literature. We find that the stellar specific angular mometum $j_{\rm{s}}$, and hence the stellar disc size given by the exponential stellar disc scale length R$_D$, of three superthins and seven LSBs lie above the 95.4 $\%$ confidence band of the $j_{\rm{s}}$ - $V_{\rm{rot}}$ regression line for ordinary bulgeless disc galaxies, $V_{\rm{rot}}$ being the asymptotic rotational velocity. Further, we find that superthins and LSBs have higher $j_{\rm{s}}$ and R$_D$ values for a given value of stellar mass $M_{\rm{s}}$ at high values of statistical significance, compared to ordinary disc galaxies. Therefore, we conclude, a superthin is may be distinguished by a characteristically larger disc size which could possibly explain the origin of its large planar-to-vertical axes ratio. Interestingly, we find that the median spin parameter $\lambda = \frac{ j_{\rm{stars}} } { {\sqrt(2) V_{\rm{vir}} R_{\rm{vir}} } }$, $V_{\rm{vir}}$ and $R_{\rm{vir}}$ being the virial velocity and virial radius of the galaxy respectively, is 0.13 $\pm$ 0.01 for superthin galaxies which is an order of magnitude higher than those of LSBs and ordinary disc galaxies, which may have important implications for the existence of superthin stellar discs in these low surface brightness galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures (Accepted for publication in MNRAS)

Thanks to the remarkable ALMA capabilities and the unique configuration of the Cosmic Snake galaxy behind a massive galaxy cluster, we could resolve molecular clouds down to 30 pc linear physical scales in a typical Milky Way progenitor at z = 1.036, through CO(4–3) observations performed at the ∼ 0.2″ angular resolution. We identified 17 individual giant molecular clouds. These high-redshift molecular clouds are clearly different from their local analogues, with 10–100 times higher masses, densities, and internal turbulence. They are offset from the Larson scaling relations. We argue that the molecular cloud physical properties are dependent on the ambient interstellar conditions particular to the host galaxy. We find these high-redshift clouds in virial equilibrium, and derive, for the first time, the CO-to-H2 conversion factor from the kinematics of independent molecular clouds at z = 1. The measured large clouds gas masses demonstrate the existence of parent gas clouds with masses high enough to allow the in-situ formation of similarly massive stellar clumps seen in the Cosmic Snake galaxy in comparable numbers. Our results support the formation of molecular clouds by fragmentation of turbulent galactic gas disks, which then become the stellar clumps observed in distant galaxies.

We study the dependency of the concentration on mass and redshift using three large N-body cosmological hydrodynamic simulations carried out by the Magneticum project. We constrain the slope of the mass-concentration relation with an unprecedented mass range for hydrodynamic simulations and find a negative trend on the mass-concentration plane and a slightly negative redshift dependency, in agreement with observations and other numerical works. We also show how the concentration correlates with the fossil parameter, defined as the stellar mass ratio between the central galaxy and the most massive satellite, in agreement with observations. We find that haloes with high fossil parameter have systematically higher concentration and investigate the cause in two different ways. First we study the evolution of haloes that lives unperturbed for a long period of time, where we find that the internal region keeps accreting satellites as the fossil parameter increases and the scale radius decreases (which increases the concentration). We also study the dependency of the concentration on the virial ratio and the energy term from the surface pressure $E_s$. We conclude that fossil objects have higher concentration because they are dynamically relaxed, with no in-fall/out-fall material and had time to accrete their satellites., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

In massive objects, such as galaxy clusters, the turbulent velocity dispersion, $\sigma_\mathrm{turb}$, is tightly correlated to both the object mass, $M$, and the thermal energy. Here, we investigate whether these scaling laws extend to lower-mass objects in dark-matter filaments. We perform a cosmological zoom-in simulation of a filament using an adaptive filtering technique for the resolved velocity component and a subgrid-scale model to account for the unresolved component. We then compute the mean turbulent and thermal energies for all halos in the zoom-in region and compare different definitions of halo averages. Averaging constrained by density and temperature thresholds is favored over averages solely based on virial spheres. We find no clear trend for the turbulent velocity dispersion versus halo mass, but significant correlation and a scaling law with exponent $\alpha\sim 0.5$ between the turbulent velocity dispersion and thermal energy that agrees with a nearly constant turbulent Mach number, similar to more massive objects. Our intention is to provide easy methods for estimating entropy and chemical potentials for gas phase reactions. Clausius’ virial theorem set a basis for relating kinetic energy in a body of independent material particles to its potential energy, pointing to their complementary role with respect to the second law of maximum entropy. Based on this partitioning of thermal energy as sensible heat and also as a latent heat or field potential energy, in action mechanics we express the entropy of ideal gases as a capacity factor for enthalpy plus the configurational work to sustain the relative translational, rotational, and vibrational action. This yields algorithms for estimating chemical reaction rates and positions of equilibrium. All properties of state including entropy, work potential as Helmholtz and Gibbs energies, and activated transition state reaction rates can be estimated, using easily accessible molecular properties, such as atomic weights, bond lengths, moments of inertia, and vibrational frequencies. We conclude that the large molecular size of many enzymes may catalyze reaction rates because of their large radial inertia as colloidal particles, maximising action states by impulsive collisions. Understanding how Clausius’ virial theorem justifies partitioning between thermal and statistical properties of entropy, yielding a more complete view of the second law’s evolutionary nature and the principle of maximum entropy. The ease of performing these operations is illustrated with three important chemical gas phase reactions: the reversible dissociation of hydrogen molecules, lysis of water to hydrogen and oxygen, and the reversible formation of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen. Employing the ergal also introduced by Clausius to define the reversible internal work overcoming molecular interactions plus the configurational work of change in Gibbs energy, often neglected, this may provide a practical guide for managing industrial processes and risk in climate change at the global scale. The concepts developed should also have value as novel methods for the instruction of senior students.

In this paper, we study, in the Newtonian limit, the virial theorem in the context of a scalar tensor fourth order gravity. In particular, we show, that for a isolated galaxy in viral equilibrium, a specific class of scalar tensor fourth order gravity, i.e. $$f(R,\phi )+\omega (\phi )\,\phi _{;\alpha }\,\phi ^{;\alpha }$$ f ( R , ϕ ) + ω ( ϕ ) ϕ ; α ϕ ; α in not suitable to explain the large fraction of dark matter necessary to have the flatness of the galaxies rotation curves experimentally observed.

Reverberation mapping (RM) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has been used over the past three decades to determine AGN broad-line region (BLR) sizes and central black-hole masses, and their relations with the AGN's luminosity. Until recently the sample of objects with RM data was limited to low-luminosity AGNs ($L_{\rm opt} \lesssim 10^{46}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) and low redshifts ($z \lesssim 0.5$). Here we present results from a reverberation-mapping project of some of the most luminous and highest redshift quasars that have been mapped to date. The study is based on almost twenty years of photometric monitoring of 11 quasars, six of which were monitored spectrophotometrically for 13 years. This is the longest reverberation-mapping project carried out so far on this type of AGNs. We successfully measure a time lag between the CIV$\lambda$1549 broad emission line and the quasar continuum in three objects, and measure a CIII$\lambda$1909 lag in one quasar. Together with recently published data on CIV reverberation mapping, the BLR size is found to scale as the square root of the UV luminosity over eight orders of magnitude in AGN luminosity. There is a significant scatter in the relation, part of which may be intrinsic to the AGNs. Although the CIV line is probably less well suited than Balmer lines for determination of the mass of the black hole, virial masses are tentatively computed and in spite of a large scatter we find that the mass of the black hole scales as the square root of the UV luminosity., Comment: 14 Figures, 27 pages, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Galactic scale tests have proven to be powerful tools in constraining fundamental physics in previously under-explored regions of parameter space. The astrophysical regime which they probe is inherently complicated, and the inference methods used to make these constraints should be robust to baryonic effects. Previous analyses have assumed simple empirical models for astrophysical noise without detailed calibration or justification. We outline a framework for assessing the reliability of such methods by constructing and testing more advanced baryonic models using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. As a case study, we use the Horizon-AGN simulation to investigate warping of stellar disks and offsets between gas and stars within galaxies, which are powerful probes of screened fifth forces. We show that the degree of `U'-shaped warping of galaxies is well modelled by Gaussian random noise, but that the magnitude of the gas-star offset is correlated with the virial radius of the host halo. By incorporating this correlation we confirm recent results ruling out astrophysically relevant Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity, and identify a $\sim 30\%$ systematic uncertainty due to baryonic physics. We present high spatial resolution (12pc) Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array CO(J=3-2) observations of the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC4429. We identify 217 giant molecular clouds within the 450pc radius molecular gas disc. The clouds generally have smaller sizes and masses but higher surface densities and observed linewidths than those of Milky Way disc clouds. An unusually steep size - line width relation and large cloud internal velocity gradients (0.05 - 0.91 km s^-1 pc^-1) and observed Virial parameters (alpha_obs,vir = 4.0) are found, that appear due to internal rotation driven by the background galactic gravitational potential. Removing this rotation, an internal Virial equilibrium appears to be established between the self-gravitational (Usg) and turbulent kinetic (Eturb) energies of each cloud, i.e. alpha_sg,vir=Usg/Eturb = 1.3. However, to properly account for both self and external gravity (shear and tidal forces), we formulate a modified Virial theorem and define an effective Virial parameter alpha_eff,vir = alpha_sg,vir + Usg/Eext (and associated effective velocity dispersion). The NGC4429 clouds then appear to be in a critical state in which the self-gravitational energy and the contribution of external gravity to the cloud's energy budget (Eext) are approximately equal, i.e. Eext/Usg~1. As such, alpha_eff,vir = 2.2 and most clouds are not virialised but remain marginally gravitationally bound. We show this is consistent with the clouds having sizes similar to their tidal radii and being generally radially elongated. External gravity is thus as important as self-gravity to regulate the clouds of NGC4429., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

Recent searches for the hosts of high-redshift ($z \sim 4$) damped Ly$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) have detected bright galaxies at distances of tens of kpc from the DLA. Using the FIRE-2 cosmological zoom simulations, we argue that these relatively large distances are due to a predominantly cool and neutral inner circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding high-redshift galaxies. The inner CGM is cool because of the short cooling time of hot gas in $\lesssim10^{12}$ Msun halos, which implies that accretion and feedback energy are radiated quickly, while it is neutral due to the high volume densities and column densities at high redshift which shield cool gas from photoionization. Our analysis predicts large DLA covering factors ($\gtrsim50\%$) out to impact parameters $\sim0.3((1 + z)/5)^{3/2}\ R_{\rm vir}$ from the central galaxies at $z > 1$, equivalent to a physical distance of $\sim 21 M_{12}^{1/3} ((1 + z)/5)^{1/2}$ kpc ($R_{\rm vir}$ and $M_{12}$ are the halo virial radius and mass in units of $10^{12}$ Msun, respectively). This implies that DLA covering factors at $z \sim 4$ may be comparable to unity out to a distance $\sim 10$ times larger than stellar half-mass radii. A predominantly neutral inner CGM in the early universe suggests that its mass and metallicity can be directly constrained by CGM absorption surveys, without resorting to large ionization corrections as required for ionized CGM., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted to MNRAS
