We give an overview of circumstellar interaction in young Type II supernovae, as seen through the eyes of very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations. The resolution attained by such observations (best than 1 mas) is a powerful tool to probe the interaction that takes place after a supernova goes off. The direct imaging of a supernova permits, in principle, to estimate the deceleration of its expansion, and to obtain information on the eject and circumstellar density profiles, as well as estimates of the magnetic field intensity and relativistic particle energy density in the supernova. Unfortunately, only a handful of radio supernovae are close and bright enough as to permit their study with VLBI. We report on the status of our S5 polar cap astrometry program. Since 1997 we have observed all the 13 radio sources of the complete S5 polar cap sample at the wavelengths of 3.6 cm, 2 cm and 7 mm. Images of the radio sources at 3.6 and 2 cm have already been published reporting morphological changes. Preliminary astrometric analyses have been carried out at three frequencies with precisions in the relative position determination ranging from 80 to 20 microarcseconds. We report also on the combination of our phase-delay global astrometry results with the microarcsecond-precise optical astrometry that will be provided by future space-based instruments., 2 pages. 1 figure. We observed the thirteen extragalactic radio sources of the complete S5 polar cap sample at 15.4 GHz with the Very Long Baseline Array, on 27 July 1999 (1999.57) and 15 June 2000 (2000.46). We present the maps from those two epochs, along with maps obtained from observations of the 2 cm VLBA survey for some of the sources of the sample, making a total of 40 maps. We discuss the apparent morphological changes displayed by the radio sources between the observing epochs. Our VLBA observations correspond to the first two epochs at 15.4 GHz of a program to study the absolute kinematics of the radio source components of the members of the sample, by means of phase delay astrometry at 8.4 GHz, 15.4 GHz, and 43 GHz. Our 15.4 GHz VLBA imaging allowed us to disentangle the inner milliarcsecond structure of some of the sources, thus resolving components that appeared blended at 8.4 GHz. For most of the sources, we identified the brightest feature in each radio source with the core. These identifications are supported by the spectral index estimates for those brightest features, which are in general flat, or even inverted. Most of the sources display core-dominance in the overall emission. We find that three of the sources have their most inverted spectrum component shifted with respect to the origin in the map, which approximately coincides with the peak-of-brightness at both 15.4 GHz and 8.4 GHz., Comment: Accepted by A&A (in press). 23 pages, 14 figures

The high resolution obtained through the use of VLBI gives an unique opportunity to directly observe the interaction of an expanding radio supernova with its surrounding medium. We present wide-field images of the quadruple gravitational lenses B1422+231 and MGJ0414+0534 obtained from global Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations at 8.4 GHz on 23 November 1997. We report on the present status of our S5 polar cap phase-connected astrometry program. We observe 13 radio sources in the northernmost 20deg of the sky at the wavelengths of 3.6cm and 2cm, and we plan to extend the program to 0.7cm. We phase-connect jointly all our data successfully. We image the radio sources and some of them show morphological changes, in which astrometric registration is needed to determine the kinematics of the source components. On 18 November 1993, we observed the QSO 1150+812 and the BL Lac object 1803+784, nearly 15\deg apart on the sky, with a VLBI array, simultaneously recording at 8.4 and 2.3 GHz. Using difference astrometry techniques, we determined the coordinates of 1803+784 relative to those of 1150+812 to be \Delta\alpha = 6h 7m 33.18469 arcsec +- 0.00020 arcsec \Delta\delta = -2deg 30' 25''.13557 +- 0''.00075 These standard errors contain estimated contributions from the propagation medium, the effects of source opacity, and the possible misidentification of the reference point in some of the maps. We obtained comparably accurate and consistent relative positions of the radio sources with GPS-based ionosphere corrections, thus demonstrating that dual-frequency observations are not required for state-of-the-art accuracy in VLBI astrometry. These results also demonstrate the feasibility of using single-frequency measurements for sources separated by 15$^\circ$ on the sky, and open the avenue for the application of this technique on a full-sky scale., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

From 43GHz VLBA observations of the pair of radio sources 1928+738 and 2007+777 we have demonstrated the feasibility of precision phase-delay differential astrometric techniques at millimeter wavelengths. For a pair of sources with 5 degrees separation and high antenna elevations, we have shown that present astrometric models and millimeter arrays are advanced enough to model the differential phase-delay to within 2 picoseconds, less than one tenth of a phase-cycle at 43GHz. The root-mean-square of the differential phase-delay residuals is dominated by the fluctuations of the atmospheric water vapor. We have determined the relative position of the observed sources with a precision twofold better than previous determinations at lower frequencies and, more importantly, largely free from ambiguous definitions of the reference point on the structure of the radio sources. Our result makes 43GHz VLBI phase-delay differential astrometry an ideal tool to study the absolute kinematics of the highly variable structures of regions near the core of extragalactic radio sources., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

The use of the phase-delay improves substantially the accuracy obtained in VLBI astrometry with respect to the group-delay observable. Recently, Ros et al. (1999) have extended the related phase-connection technique to a triangle of radio sources with relative separations up to 6.8deg (the S5 sources BL1803+784/ QSO1928+738/ BL2007+777). This technique has also been extended for separations up to 15deg in the studies of the pair of S5 radio sources QSO1150+812/ BL1803+784 (Perez-Torres et al. 2000). We are carrying out a long-term astrometric programme at 8.4, 15, and 43 GHz to determine the absolute kinematics of radio source components in the 13 members of the complete S5 polar cap sample. For each epoch, all the radio sources are observed at the same frequency for 24 hours in total. Bootstrapping techniques are used to phase-connect the data jointly for the 13 objects throughout the observations. An accurate registration of the maps of the radio sources at different frequencies will allow a study of jet components with unprecedented precision and provide spectral information. We present Space-VLBI observations of the quasar 3C395 which show evidence of the existence of a large bend in the inner parts of its jet, close to the core. This bend would explain why previous Earth-based cm-VLBI observations could not detect the ejection of new moving components, as expected from flux density variability in this source. The VLBI technique can image compact radio sources with resolutions of the order of the milliarcsecond and can determine astrometrically relative positions with submilliarcsecond precisions. We determined the angular separations among the radio sources in the triangle 1803+784/1928+738/2007+777 with submilliarcsecond accuracy from a weighted least squares analysis of the differential phases. The comparison of the estimated separation of the pair 1928+738/2007+777 with previous such estimates obtained from data at different epochs allowed us to align the maps of 1928+738 at diferent epochs relative to those of 2007+777, showing that the jet components of 1928+738 display proper motions, and suggesting an identification for the position of the core of this radio source. We have also observed astrometrically the complete S5 polar cap sample, that among the 13 sources within 20 degrees to the celestial North Pole includes the above 3. We observed the pair of radio sources 1150+812 and 1803+784 in November 1993 with a VLBI array, simultaneously recording at 8.4 and 2.3 GHz. We determined the angular separation between the two sources with submilliarcsecond accuracy by using differential techniques. The parsec scale properties of low power radio galaxies are reviewed here, using the available data on 12 FR I galaxies. The most frequent radio structure is an asymmetric parsec-scale morphology, i.e. core and one-sided jet. It is shared by 9 (possibly 10) of the 12 mapped radio galaxies. One (possibly 2) of the other galaxies has (have) a two-sided jet emission. Two sources are known from published data to show a proper motion; we present here evidence for proper motion in two more galaxies. Therefore, in the present sample we have 4 radio galaxies with a measured proper motion. One of these has a very symmetric structure and therefore should be in the plane of the sky. The results discussed here are in agreement with the predictions of the unified scheme models. Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites broadcast at frequencies of 1,575.42 MHz (L1) and of 1,227.60 MHz (L2). The dispersive property of the ionosphere can be used to combine independent measurements at the two frequencies to estimate the total electron content (TEC) between a GPS receiver site and a broadcasting satellite. Such measurements, made at sites near to Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) sites, can be used to estimate the ionospheric contribution to VLBI observables. For our 1991.9 astrometric VLBI experiment in which we obtained group-delay observations in the 8.4 and 2.3 GHz bands simultaneously, we found that the GPS and VLBI determinations of the ionosphere delays agreed with root-mean-square differences below 0.15 ns for intercontinental baselines and 0.10 ns for continental ones. We present radio and optical observations of the peculiar radio galaxy J1835+620, a member of a new sample of large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. Its optical counterpart is in a group of at least three galaxies and shows strong, narrow emission lines which allow us to measure its redshift as z=0.518. The derived cosmological distance places J1835+620 among the giant radio galaxies. The outstanding aspect of J1835+620 at radio wavelengths is the existence of two symmetric bright components within a typical Fanaroff-Riley type II structure. We interpret the source as the result of two distinct phases of core activity. Radio maps and radio polarization properties are consistent with a dense new ejection evolving through an older underlying jet. We suggest that interaction with nearby galaxies could be the reason for restarting the activity in J1835+620., 7 pages, 3 figures. To appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics, Main Journal

We determined the separations of the radio sources in the triangle formed by the BL Lac objects 1803+784 and 2007+777, and the QSO 1928+738 from intercontinental interferometric observations carried out in November 1991 at the frequencies of 2.3 and 8.4 GHz simultaneously. We successfully connected differenced phase delays over 7^o on the sky at 8.4 GHz at an epoch of maximum solar activity. The effects of the ionosphere on these VLBI data were mostly removed by estimates of the total electron content from observations of GPS satellites. The comparison of the estimated separation of QSO 1928+738 and BL 2007+777 with previous such estimates obtained from data at different epochs leads us to a particular alignment of the maps of QSO 1928+738 at different epochs relative to those of BL 2007+777, although with significant uncertainty. For this alignment, the jet components of QSO 1928+738 show a mean proper motion of 0.32+/-0.10 mas/yr and also suggest an identification for the position of the core of this radio source., 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

SN1993J is to date the radio supernova whose evolution has been monitored in greatest detail and the one which holds best promise for a comprehensive theoretical-observational analysis. The shell-like radio structure of SN1993J has expanded in general accord with models of shock excited emission, showing almost circular symmetry for over 8 years, except for a bright feature at the south-eastern region of the shell that has been observed at every epoch. The spectrum of SN1993J has flattened from alpha =-1 to alpha =-0.67 (S_(\nu) propto nu**(alpha)). The decelerated expansion can be modeled well with a single slope but apparently better with two slopes. There are also intriguing hints of structure in the expansion curve. The results by the two VLBI groups carrying out this research show general agreement, but also some differences.
