Semi-analytic models (SAMs) systematically predict higher stellar-mass scatter at a given halo mass than hydrodynamical simulations and most empirical models. Our goal is to investigate the physical origin of this scatter by exploring modifications to the physics in the SAM Dark Sage. We design two black hole formation models that approximate results from the IllustrisTNG 300-1 hydrodynamical simulation. In the first model, we assign a fixed black hole mass of $10^{6}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ to every halo that reaches $10^{10.5}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. In the second model, we disregard any black hole growth as implemented in the standard Dark Sage model. Instead, we force all black hole masses to follow the median black hole mass-halo mass relation in IllustrisTNG 300-1 with a fixed scatter. We find that each model on its own does not significantly reduce the scatter in stellar mass. To do this, we replace the native Dark Sage AGN feedback model with a simple model where we turn off cooling for galaxies with black hole masses above $10^{8}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. With this additional modification, the SMBH seeding and fixed conditional distribution models find a significant reduction in the scatter in stellar mass at halo masses between $10^{11-14}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. These results suggest that AGN feedback in SAMs acts in a qualitatively different way than feedback implemented in cosmological simulations. This paper represents an effort to provide robust constraints on the galaxy-halo connection and simultaneously test the Planck LCDM cosmology using a fully numerical model of small-scale galaxy clustering. We explore two extensions to the standard Halo Occupation Distribution model: assembly bias, whereby halo occupation depends on both halo mass and the larger environment, and velocity bias, whereby galaxy velocities do not perfectly trace the velocity of the dark matter within the halo. Moreover, we incorporate halo mass corrections to account for the impact of baryonic physics on the halo population. We identify an optimal set of clustering measurements to constrain this "decorated" HOD model for both low- and high-luminosity galaxies in SDSS DR7. We find that, for low-luminosity galaxies, a model with both assembly bias and velocity bias provides the best fit to the clustering measurements, with no tension remaining in the fit. In this model we find evidence for both central and satellite galaxy assembly bias at the 99% and 95% confidence levels, respectively. In addition, we find evidence for satellite galaxy velocity bias at the 99.9% confidence level. For high luminosity galaxies, we find no evidence for either assembly bias or velocity bias, but our model exhibits significant tension with SDSS measurements. We find that all of these conclusions still stand when we include the effects of baryonic physics on the halo mass function, suggesting that the tension we find for high luminosity galaxies may be due to a problem with our assumed cosmological model., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures

We present the data release of the Uchuu-SDSS galaxies: a set of 32 high-fidelity galaxy lightcones constructed from the large Uchuu 2.1 trillion particle $N$-body simulation using Planck cosmology. We adopt subhalo abundance matching to populate the Uchuu-box halo catalogues with SDSS galaxy luminosities. These cubic box galaxy catalogues generated at several redshifts are combined to create the set of lightcones with redshift-evolving galaxy properties. The Uchuu-SDSS galaxy lightcones are built to reproduce the footprint and statistical properties of the SDSS main galaxy survey, along with stellar masses and star formation rates. This facilitates direct comparison of the observed SDSS and simulated Uchuu-SDSS data. Our lightcones reproduce a large number of observational results, such as the distribution of galaxy properties, the galaxy clustering, the stellar mass functions, and the halo occupation distributions. Using the simulated and real data we select samples of bright red galaxies at $z_\mathrm{eff}=0.15$ to explore Redshift Space Distortions and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) utilizing a full-shape analytical model of the two-point correlation function. We create a set of 5100 galaxy lightcones using GLAM N-body simulations to compute covariance errors. We report a $\sim 30\%$ precision increase on $f\sigma_8$, due to our better estimate of the covariance matrix. From our BAO-inferred $\alpha_{\parallel}$ and $\alpha_{\perp}$ parameters, we obtain the first SDSS measurements of the Hubble and angular diameter distances $D_\mathrm{H}(z=0.15) / r_d = 27.9^{+3.1}_{-2.7}$, $D_\mathrm{M}(z=0.15) / r_d = 5.1^{+0.4}_{-0.4}$. Overall, we conclude that the Planck LCDM cosmology nicely explains the observed large-scale structure statistics of SDSS. Applying halo models to analyze the small-scale clustering of galaxies is a proven method for characterizing the connection between galaxies and their host halos. Such works are often plagued by systematic errors or are limited to clustering statistics which can be predicted analytically. In this work, we employ a numerical mock-based modeling procedure to examine the clustering of SDSS DR7 galaxies. We apply a standard halo occupation distribution (HOD) model to dark-matter-only simulations with a LCDM cosmology. To constrain the theoretical models, we utilize a combination of galaxy number density and selected scales of the projected correlation function, redshift-space correlation function, group multiplicity function, average group velocity dispersion, mark correlation function, and counts-in-cells statistics. We design an algorithm to choose an optimal combination of measurements that yields tight and accurate constraints on our model parameters. Compared to previous work using fewer clustering statistics, we find significant improvement in the constraints on all parameters of our halo model for two different luminosity-threshold galaxy samples. Most interestingly, we obtain unprecedented high-precision constraints on the scatter in the relationship between galaxy luminosity and halo mass. However, our best-fit model results in significant tension (>4 sigma) for both samples, indicating the need to add second-order features to the standard HOD model. To guarantee the robustness of these results, we perform an extensive analysis of the systematic and statistical errors in our modeling procedure, including a first-of-its-kind study of the sensitivity of our constraints to changes in the halo mass function due to baryonic physics., Comment: 36 pages, 17 figures, submitted to ApJ

We measure the environmental dependence, where environment is defined by the distance to the third nearest neighbor, of multiple galaxy properties inside the Environmental COntext (ECO) catalog. We focus primarily on void galaxies, which we define as the $10 \%$ of galaxies having the lowest local density. We compare the properties of void and non-void galaxies: baryonic mass, color, fractional stellar mass growth rate (FSMGR), morphology, and gas-to-stellar-mass ratio (estimated from a combination of HI data and photometric gas fractions calibrated with the RESOLVE survey). Our void galaxies typically have lower baryonic masses than galaxies in denser environments, and they display the properties expected of a lower mass population: they have more late-types, are bluer, have higher FSMGR, and are more gas rich. We control for baryonic mass and investigate the extent to which void galaxies are different at fixed mass. Void galaxies are bluer, more gas-rich, and more star forming at fixed mass than non-void galaxies, which is a possible signature of galaxy assembly bias. Furthermore, we show that these trends persist even at fixed mass and morphology, and we find that voids host a distinct population of early-types that are bluer and more star-forming than the typical red and quenched early-types. In addition to these empirical observational results, we also present theoretical results from mock catalogs with built-in galaxy assembly bias. We show that a simple matching of galaxy properties to (sub)halo properties, such as mass and age, can recover the observed environmental trends in ECO galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures. The evolution of a dark matter halo in a dark matter only simulation is governed purely byNewtonian gravity, making a clean testbed to determine what halo properties drive its fate.Using machine learning, we predict the survival, mass loss, final position, and merging time of subhalos within a cosmological N-body simulation, focusing on what instantaneous initial features of the halo, interaction, and environment matter most. Survival is well predicted, with our model achieving 96.5% accuracy using only 3 model inputs from the initial interaction.However, the mass loss, final location, and merging times are much more stochastic processes, with significant margins of error between the true and predicted quantities for much of our sample. The redshift, impact angle, relative velocity, and the masses of the host and subhalo are the only relevant initial inputs for determining subhalo evolution. In general, subhalos that enter their hosts at a mid-range of redshifts (typically z = 0.67-0.43) are the most challenging to make predictions for, across all of our final outcomes. Subhalo orbits that come in more perpendicular to the host are also easier to predict, except for in the case of predicting disruption, where the opposite appears to be true. We conclude that the detailed evolution of individual subhalos within N-body simulations is quite difficult to predict, pointing to a stochasticity in the merging process. The 2MASS Redshift Survey was started two decades ago with the goal of mapping the three-dimensional distribution of an all-sky flux-limited (Ks<11.75 mag) sample of ~45,000 galaxies. Our first data release (Huchra et al. 2012) presented an unprecedented uniform coverage for most of the celestial sphere, with redshifts for ~98% of our sample. However, we were missing redshifts for ~18% of the catalog entries that were located within the "Zone of Avoidance" (|b|<10 deg) -- an important region of the sky for studies of large-scale structure and cosmic flows. In this second and final data release, we present redshifts for all 1041 2MRS galaxies that previously lacked this information, as well as updated measurements for 27 others.

We study the present-day connection between galaxy morphology and angular momentum using the {\sc Dark Sage} semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. For galaxies between $ 10^{11}-10^{12} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ in stellar mass, the model successfully predicts the observed trend whereby galaxies with more prominent disks exhibit higher {\em stellar} disk specific angular momentum ($j_{\rm stellar, disk}$) at fixed stellar mass. However, when we include the gas in the disk, bulge-dominated galaxies have the highest {\em total} disk specific angular momentum ($j_{\rm total, disk}$). We attribute this to a large contribution from an extended disk of cold gas in typical bulge-dominated galaxies. We find the relationship between $j_{\rm dark matter}$ and morphology to be quite complex. Surprisingly, in this stellar mass range, not only do bulge-dominated galaxies tend to live in halos with higher $j_{\rm dark matter}$ than disk-dominated galaxies, but intermediate galaxies (those with roughly equal fractions of bulge and disk mass) have the lowest $j_{\rm dark matter}$ of all. Yet, when controlling for halo mass, rather than stellar mass, the relationship between $j_{\rm dark matter}$ and morphology vanishes. Based on these results, halo mass rather than angular momentum is the main driver of the predicted morphology sequence at high masses. Halo models provide a simple and computationally inexpensive way to investigate the connection between galaxies and their dark matter haloes. However, these models rely on the assumption that the role of baryons can be easily parametrized in the modelling procedure. We aim to examine the ability of halo occupation distribution (HOD) modelling to reproduce the galaxy clustering found in two different hydrodynamic simulations, Illustris and EAGLE. For each simulation, we measure several galaxy clustering statistics on two different luminosity threshold samples. We then apply a simple five parameter HOD, which was fit to each simulation separately, to the corresponding dark matter only simulations, and measure the same clustering statistics. We find that the halo mass function is shifted to lower masses in the hydrodynamic simulations, resulting in a galaxy number density that is too high when an HOD is applied to the dark matter only simulation. However, the exact way in which baryons alter the mass function is remarkably different in the two simulations. After applying a correction to the halo mass function in each simulation, the HOD is able to accurately reproduce all clustering statistics for the high luminosity sample of galaxies. We present a machine learning (ML) approach for the prediction of galaxies' dark matter halo masses that achieves an improved performance over conventional methods. We train three ML algorithms (\texttt{XGBoost}, Random Forests, and neural network) to predict halo masses using a set of synthetic galaxy catalogues that are built by populating dark matter haloes in N-body simulations with galaxies, and that match both the clustering and the joint-distributions of properties of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We explore the correlation of different galaxy- and group-related properties with halo mass, and extract the set of nine features that contribute the most to the prediction of halo mass. We find that mass predictions from the ML algorithms are more accurate than those from halo abundance matching (\texttt{HAM}) or dynamical mass (\texttt{DYN}) estimates. Since the danger of this approach is that our training data might not accurately represent the real Universe, we explore the effect of testing the model on synthetic catalogues built with different assumptions than the ones used in the training phase. We test a variety of models with different ways of populating dark matter haloes, such as adding velocity bias for satellite galaxies. We determine that, though training and testing on different data can lead to systematic errors in predicted masses, the ML approach still yields substantially better masses than either \texttt{HAM}or \texttt{DYN}. A small survey of the UV-absorbing gas in 12 low-$z$ galaxy groups has been conducted using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Targets were selected from a large, homogeneously-selected sample of groups found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). A critical selection criterion excluded sight lines that pass close ($<1.5$ virial radii) to a group galaxy, to ensure absorber association with the group as a whole. Deeper galaxy redshift observations are used both to search for closer galaxies and also to characterize these $10^{13.5}$ to $10^{14.5} M_{\odot}$ groups, the most massive of which are highly-virialized with numerous early-type galaxies (ETGs). This sample also includes two spiral-rich groups, not yet fully-virialized. At group-centric impact parameters of 0.3-2 Mpc, these $\mathrm{S/N}=15$-30 spectra detected HI absorption in 7 of 12 groups; high (OVI) and low (SiIII) ion metal lines are present in 2/3 of the absorption components. None of the three most highly-virialized, ETG-dominated groups are detected in absorption. Covering fractions $\gtrsim50$% are seen at all impact parameters probed, but do not require large filling factors despite an enormous extent. Unlike halo clouds in individual galaxies, group absorbers have radial velocities which are too low to escape the group potential well without doubt. This suggests that these groups are "closed boxes" for galactic evolution in the current epoch. We present results of our large scale, optical, multi-epoch photometric survey of ~180 square degrees across the Orion OB1 association, complemented with extensive follow up spectroscopy. We map and characterize in an uniform way the off-cloud, low-mass, pre-main sequence populations. We report 2064, mostly K and M-type, confirmed T Tauri members. Most (59%) are located in the OB1a subassociation, 27% in OB1b, and 14% within the confines of the A and B molecular clouds. There is significant structure in the spatial distribution of the young stars. We characterize two new clusterings of T Tauri stars, HD 35762 and HR 1833 in the OB1a subassociation, and two stellar overdensities in OB1b. There is indication of two populations of young stars in the OB1b region, located at two different distances, which may be due to the OB1a subassociation overlapping on front of OB1b. The various groups and regions can be ordered in an age sequence that agrees with the long standing picture of star formation starting in Orion OB1a some 10-15 Myr ago. We define a new type of T Tauri star, the C/W class, objects we propose may be nearing the end of their accretion phase. We detect the observational signature of Li depletion in young K and M stars with a timescale of 8.5 Myr. The decline of the accretion fraction from ~2 - 10 Myr, implies an accretion e-folding timescale of 2.1 Myr. Finally, the median amplitude of the V-band variability shows the decline of stellar activity, from accreting Classical T Tauri stars to the least active field dwarfs., Comment: 41 pages, 30 figures, submitted to the Astronomical Journal on May 02, 2018. Galactic conformity is the phenomenon whereby galaxy properties exhibit excess correlations across distance than that expected if these properties only depended on halo mass. We perform a comprehensive study of conformity at low redshift using a galaxy group catalogue from the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic sample. We study correlations both between central galaxies and their satellites (1-halo), and between central galaxies in separate haloes (2-halo). We use the quenched fractions and the marked correlation function (MCF), to probe for conformity in three galaxy properties, $(g-r)$ colour, specific star formation rate (sSFR), and morphology. We assess the statistical significance of conformity signals with a suite of mock galaxy catalogues that have no built-in conformity, but contain the same group-finding and mass assignment errors as the real data. In the case of 1-halo conformity, quenched fractions show strong signals at all group masses. However, these signals are equally strong in mock catalogues, indicating that the conformity signal is spurious and likely entirely caused by group-finding systematics, calling into question previous claims of 1-halo conformity detection. The MCF reveals a significant detection of radial segregation within massive groups, but no evidence of conformity. In the case of 2-halo conformity, quenched fractions show no significant evidence of conformity in colour or sSFR once compared with mock catalogues, but a clear signal using morphology. In contrast, the MCF reveals a small, yet highly significant signal for all three properties in low mass groups and scales of $0.8-4\ h^{-1}\textrm{Mpc}$, possibly representing the first robust detection of 2-halo conformity., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We examine the z = 0 group-integrated stellar and cold baryonic (stars + cold atomic gas) mass functions (group SMF and CBMF) and the baryonic collapse efficiency (group cold baryonic to dark matter halo mass ratio) using the RESOLVE and ECO survey galaxy group catalogs and a galform semi-analytic model (SAM) mock catalog. The group SMF and CBMF fall off more steeply at high masses and rise with a shallower low-mass slope than the theoretical halo mass function (HMF). The transition occurs at group-integrated cold baryonic mass M_coldbary ~ 10^11 Msun. The SAM, however, has significantly fewer groups at the transition mass ~ 10^11 Msun and a steeper low-mass slope than the data, suggesting that feedback is too weak in low-mass halos and conversely too strong near the transition mass. Using literature prescriptions to include hot halo gas and potential unobservable galaxy gas produces a group BMF with slope similar to the HMF even below the transition mass. Its normalization is lower by a factor of ~2, in agreement with estimates of warm-hot gas making up the remaining difference. We compute baryonic collapse efficiency with the halo mass calculated two ways, via halo abundance matching (HAM) and via dynamics (extended all the way to three-galaxy groups using stacking). Using HAM, we find that baryonic collapse efficiencies reach a flat maximum for groups across the halo mass range of M_halo ~ 10^11.4-12 Msun, which we label "nascent groups." Using dynamics, however, we find greater scatter in baryonic collapse efficiencies, likely indicating variation in group hot-to-cold baryon ratios. Interpreting the small-scale clustering of galaxies with halo models can elucidate the connection between galaxies and dark matter halos. Unfortunately, the modelling is typically not sufficiently accurate for ruling out models statistically. It is thus difficult to use the information encoded in small scales to test cosmological models or probe subtle features of the galaxy-halo connection. In this paper, we attempt to push halo modelling into the "accurate" regime with a fully numerical mock-based methodology and careful treatment of statistical and systematic errors. With our forward-modelling approach, we can incorporate clustering statistics beyond the traditional two-point statistics. We use this modelling methodology to test the standard $\Lambda\mathrm{CDM}$ + halo model against the clustering of SDSS DR7 galaxies. Specifically, we use the projected correlation function, group multiplicity function and galaxy number density as constraints. We find that while the model fits each statistic separately, it struggles to fit them simultaneously. Adding group statistics leads to a more stringent test of the model and significantly tighter constraints on model parameters. We explore the impact of varying the adopted halo definition and cosmological model and find that changing the cosmology makes a significant difference. The most successful model we tried (Planck cosmology with Mvir halos) matches the clustering of low luminosity galaxies, but exhibits a 2.3$\sigma$ tension with the clustering of luminous galaxies, thus providing evidence that the "standard" halo model needs to be extended. We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially-resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median redshift of z = 0.03). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between redshifts z = 0.6 and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGN and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5-meter Sloan Foundation Telescope at Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5-meter du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. In preparation for a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observing project using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS), the positions of all AGN targets having high-S/N far-UV G130M spectra were cross-correlated with a large catalog of low-redshift galaxy groups homogeneously selected from the spectroscopic sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Searching for targets behind only those groups at z = 0.1-0.2 (which places the OVI doublet in the wavelength region of peak COS sensitivity) we identified only one potential S/N = 15-20 target, FBQS 1010+3003. An OVI-only absorber was found in its G130M spectrum at z = 0.11326, close to the redshift of a foreground small group of luminous galaxies at z = 0.11685. Because there is no associated Lyalpha absorption, any characterization of this absorber is necessarily minimal; however, the OVI detection likely traces "warm" gas in collisional ionization equilibrium at T ~ 300,000 K. While this discovery is consistent with being interface gas between cooler, photoionized clouds and a hotter intra-group medium, it could also be warm, interface gas associated with the circum-galactic medium (CGM) of the single closest galaxy. In this case a detailed analysis of the galaxy distribution (complete to 0.2 L*) strongly favors the individual galaxy association. This analysis highlights the necessity of both high-S/N > 20 COS data and a deep galaxy redshift survey of the region in order to test more rigorously the association of OVI-absorbing gas with a galaxy group. We present the HI mass inventory for the RESOLVE survey, a volume-limited, multi-wavelength census of >1500 z=0 galaxies spanning diverse environments and complete in baryonic mass down to dwarfs of 10^9 Msun. This first 21cm data release provides robust detections or strong upper limits (1.4M_HI < 5 to 10% of stellar mass M_stars) for 94% of RESOLVE. We examine global atomic gas-to-stellar mass ratios (G/S) in relation to galaxy environment using several metrics: group dark matter halo mass M_h , central/satellite designation, relative mass density of the cosmic web, and distance to nearest massive group. We find that at fixed M_stars, satellites have decreasing G/S with increasing M_h starting clearly at M_h = 10^12 Msun, suggesting the presence of starvation and/or stripping mechanisms associated with halo gas heating in intermediate-mass groups. The analogous relationship for centrals is uncertain because halo abundance matching builds in relationships between central G/S, stellar mass, and halo mass, which depend on the integrated group property used as a proxy for halo mass (stellar or baryonic mass). On larger scales G/S trends are less sensitive to the abundance matching method. At fixed M_h < 10^12 Msun, the fraction of gas-poor centrals increases with large-scale structure density. In overdense regions, we identify a rare population of gas-poor centrals in low-mass (M_h < 10^11.4 Msun) halos primarily located within 1.5 times the virial radius of more massive (M_h > 10^12 Msun) halos, suggesting that gas stripping and/or starvation may be induced by interactions with larger halos or the surrounding cosmic web. In this work, we present galaxy stellar and baryonic (stars plus cold gas) mass functions (SMF and BMF) and their halo mass dependence for two volume-limited data sets. The first, RESOLVE-B, coincides with the Stripe 82 footprint and is extremely complete down to baryonic mass Mbary ~ 10^9.1 Msun, probing the gas-rich dwarf regime below Mbary ~ 10^10 Msun. The second, ECO, covers a ~40 times larger volume (containing RESOLVE-A) and is complete to Mbary ~ 10^9.4 Msun. To construct the SMF and BMF we implement a new "cross-bin sampling" technique with Monte Carlo sampling from the full likelihood distributions of stellar or baryonic mass. Our SMFs exhibit the "plateau" feature starting below Mstar ~ 10^10 Msun that has been described in prior work. However, the BMF fills in this feature and rises as a straight power law below ~10^10 Msun, as gas-dominated galaxies become the majority of the population. Nonetheless, the low-mass slope of the BMF is not as steep as that of the theoretical dark matter halo MF. Moreover, we assign group halo masses by abundance matching, finding that the SMF and BMF separated into four physically motivated halo mass regimes reveal complex structure underlying the simple shape of the overall MFs. In particular, the satellite MFs are depressed below the central galaxy MF "humps" in groups with mass <10^13.5 Msun yet rise steeply in clusters. Our results suggest that satellite destruction and/or stripping are active from the point of nascent group formation. We study the relationships between galaxy environments and galaxy properties related to disk (re)growth, considering two highly complete samples that are approximately baryonic mass limited into the high-mass dwarf galaxy regime, the Environmental COntext (ECO) catalog (data release herein) and the B-semester region of the REsolved Spectroscopy Of a Local VolumE (RESOLVE) survey. We quantify galaxy environments using both group identification and smoothed galaxy density field methods. We use by-eye and quantitative morphological classifications plus atomic gas content measurements and estimates. We find that blue early-type (E/S0) galaxies, gas-dominated galaxies, and UV-bright disk host galaxies all become distinctly more common below group halo mass ~10^11.5 Msun, implying that this low group halo mass regime may be a preferred regime for significant disk growth activity. We also find that blue early-type and blue late-type galaxies inhabit environments of similar group halo mass at fixed baryonic mass, consistent with a scenario in which blue early types can regrow late-type disks. In fact, we find that the only significant difference in the typical group halo mass inhabited by different galaxy classes is for satellite galaxies with different colors, where at fixed baryonic mass red early and late types have higher typical group halo masses than blue early and late types. We measure the two-point correlation function of G-dwarf stars within 1-3 kpc of the Sun in multiple lines-of-sight using the Schlesinger et al. G-dwarf sample from the SDSS SEGUE survey. The shapes of the correlation functions along individual SEGUE lines-of-sight depend sensitively on both the stellar-density gradients and the survey geometry. We fit smooth disk galaxy models to our SEGUE clustering measurements, and obtain strong constraints on the thin- and thick-disk components of the Milky Way. Specifically, we constrain the values of the thin- and thick-disk scale heights with 3% and 2% precision, respectively, and the values of the thin- and thick-disk scale lengths with 20% and 8% precision, respectively. Moreover, we find that a two-disk model is unable to fully explain our clustering measurements, which exhibit an excess of clustering at small scales (< 50 pc). We investigate the ability of current implementations of galaxy group finders to recover colour-dependent halo occupation statistics. To test the fidelity of group catalogue inferred statistics, we run three different group finders used in the literature over a mock that includes galaxy colours in a realistic manner. Overall, the resulting mock group catalogues are remarkably similar, and most colour-dependent statistics are recovered with reasonable accuracy. However, it is also clear that certain systematic errors arise as a consequence of correlated errors in group membership determination, central/satellite designation, and halo mass assignment. We introduce a new statistic, the halo transition probability (HTP), which captures the combined impact of all these errors. As a rule of thumb, errors tend to equalize the properties of distinct galaxy populations (i.e. red vs. blue galaxies or centrals vs. satellites), and to result in inferred occupation statistics that are more accurate for red galaxies than for blue galaxies. A statistic that is particularly poorly recovered from the group catalogues is the red fraction of central galaxies as function of halo mass. Group finders do a good job in recovering galactic conformity, but also have a tendency to introduce weak conformity when none is present. We conclude that proper inference of colour-dependent statistics from group catalogues is best achieved using forward modelling (i.e., running group finders over mock data), or by implementing a correction scheme based on the HTP, as long as the latter is not too strongly model-dependent., Comment: 27 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The third generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) took data from 2008 to 2014 using the original SDSS wide-field imager, the original and an upgraded multi-object fiber-fed optical spectrograph, a new near-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, and a novel optical interferometer. All the data from SDSS-III are now made public. In particular, this paper describes Data Release 11 (DR11) including all data acquired through 2013 July, and Data Release 12 (DR12) adding data acquired through 2014 July (including all data included in previous data releases), marking the end of SDSS-III observing. Relative to our previous public release (DR10), DR12 adds one million new spectra of galaxies and quasars from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) over an additional 3000 sq. deg of sky, more than triples the number of H-band spectra of stars as part of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), and includes repeated accurate radial velocity measurements of 5500 stars from the Multi-Object APO Radial Velocity Exoplanet Large-area Survey (MARVELS). The APOGEE outputs now include measured abundances of 15 different elements for each star. In total, SDSS-III added 2350 sq. deg of ugriz imaging; 155,520 spectra of 138,099 stars as part of the Sloan Exploration of Galactic Understanding and Evolution 2 (SEGUE-2) survey; 2,497,484 BOSS spectra of 1,372,737 galaxies, 294,512 quasars, and 247,216 stars over 9376 sq. deg; 618,080 APOGEE spectra of 156,593 stars; and 197,040 MARVELS spectra of 5,513 stars. We measure the angular clustering of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 in order to probe the spatial distribution of satellite galaxies within their dark matter halos. Specifically, we measure the angular correlation function on very small scales (7-320") in a range of luminosity threshold samples (absolute r-band magnitudes of -18 up to -21) that are constructed from the subset of SDSS that has been spectroscopically observed more than once (the so-called plate overlap region). We choose to measure angular clustering in this reduced survey footprint in order to minimize the effects of fiber collision incompleteness, which are otherwise substantial on these small scales. We model our clustering measurements using a fully numerical halo model that populates dark matter halos in N-body simulations to create realistic mock galaxy catalogs. The model has free parameters that specify both the number and spatial distribution of galaxies within their host halos. We adopt a flexible density profile for the spatial distribution of satellite galaxies that is similar to the dark matter Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, except that the inner slope is allowed to vary. We find that the angular clustering of our most luminous samples (Mr< -20 and -21) suggests that luminous satellite galaxies have substantially steeper inner density profiles than NFW. Lower luminosity samples are less constraining, however, and are consistent with satellite galaxies having shallow density profiles. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has been in operation since 2000 April. This paper presents the tenth public data release (DR10) from its current incarnation, SDSS-III. This data release includes the first spectroscopic data from the Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), along with spectroscopic data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) taken through 2012 July. The APOGEE instrument is a near-infrared R~22,500 300-fiber spectrograph covering 1.514--1.696 microns. The APOGEE survey is studying the chemical abundances and radial velocities of roughly 100,000 red giant star candidates in the bulge, bar, disk, and halo of the Milky Way. DR10 includes 178,397 spectra of 57,454 stars, each typically observed three or more times, from APOGEE. Derived quantities from these spectra (radial velocities, effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities) are also included.DR10 also roughly doubles the number of BOSS spectra over those included in the ninth data release. We introduce a new technique that uses galaxy clustering to constrain how satellite galaxies lose stellar mass and contribute to the diffuse "intrahalo light" (IHL). We implement two models that relate satellite galaxy stellar mass loss to the detailed knowledge of subhalo dark matter mass loss. Model 1 assumes that the fractional stellar mass loss of a galaxy is proportional to the fractional amount of dark matter mass loss of its subhalo. Model 2 accounts for a delay in the time that stellar mass is lost since the galaxy resides deep in the potential well of the subhalo which may experience dark matter mass loss for some time before the galaxy is affected. We use these models to predict the stellar masses of a population of galaxies and use abundance matching to predict the clustering of several r-band luminosity threshold samples from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Abundance matching assuming no stellar mass loss (akin to abundance matching at the time of subhalo infall) over-estimates the correlation function on small scales (<~ 1 Mpc), while allowing too much stellar mass loss leads to an under-estimate. For each sample, we are thus able to constrain the amount of stellar mass loss required to match the observed clustering. We find that less luminous satellite galaxies experience more efficient stellar mass loss than luminous satellites. From these models, we can infer the amount of stellar mass that is deposited into the IHL. We find that both of our model predictions for the mean amount of IHL as a function of halo mass are consistent with current observational measurements. However, our two models predict a different amount of scatter in the IHL from halo to halo, with Model 2 being favored by observations. We investigate the radial distribution of galaxies within their host dark matter halos by modeling their small-scale clustering, as measured in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Specifically, we model the Jiang et al. (2011) measurements of the galaxy two-point correlation function down to very small projected separations (10 < r < 400 kpc/h), in a wide range of luminosity threshold samples (absolute r-band magnitudes of -18 up to -23). We use a halo occupation distribution (HOD) framework with free parameters that specify both the number and spatial distribution of galaxies within their host dark matter halos. We assume that the first galaxy in each halo lives at the halo center and that additional satellite galaxies follow a radial density profile similar to the dark matter Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, except that the concentration and inner slope are allowed to vary. We find that in low luminosity samples, satellite galaxies have radial profiles that are consistent with NFW. M_r < -20 and brighter satellite galaxies have radial profiles with significantly steeper inner slopes than NFW (we find inner logarithmic slopes ranging from -1.6 to -2.1, as opposed to -1 for NFW). We define a useful metric of concentration, M_(1/10), which is the fraction of satellite galaxies (or mass) that are enclosed within one tenth of the virial radius of a halo. We find that M_(1/10) for low luminosity satellite galaxies agrees with NFW, whereas for luminous galaxies it is 2.5-4 times higher, demonstrating that these galaxies are substantially more centrally concentrated within their dark matter halos than the dark matter itself. Our results therefore suggest that the processes that govern the spatial distribution of galaxies, once they have merged into larger halos, must be luminosity dependent, such that luminous galaxies become poor tracers of the underlying dark matter., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, Accepted to ApJ

We analyse the Fundamental Plane (FP) relation of $39,993$ early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the optical (griz) and $5,080$ ETGs in the Near-Infrared (YJHK) wavebands, forming an optical$+$NIR sample of $4,589$ galaxies. We focus on the analysis of the FP as a function of the environment where galaxies reside. We characterise the environment using the largest group catalogue, based on 3D data, generated from SDSS at low redshift ($z < 0.1$). We find that the intercept $``c''$ of the FP decreases smoothly from high to low density regions, implying that galaxies at low density have on average lower mass-to-light ratios than their high-density counterparts. The $``c''$ also decreases as a function of the mean characteristic mass of the parent galaxy group. However, this trend is weak and completely accounted for by the variation of $``c''$ with local density. The variation of the FP offset is the same in all wavebands, implying that ETGs at low density have younger luminosity-weighted ages than cluster galaxies, consistent with the expectations of semi-analytical models of galaxy formation. We measure an age variation of $\sim 0.048$~dex ($\sim 11\%$) per decade of local galaxy density. This implies an age difference of about $32 \%$ ($\sim 3 \, Gyr$) between galaxies in the regions of highest density and the field. We find the metallicity decreasing, at $\sim 2$~$\sigma$, from low to high density. We also find $2.5 \, \sigma$ evidence that the variation in age per decade of local density augments, up to a factor of two, for galaxies residing in massive relative to poor groups.
