We present the substellar mass function of star-forming clusters ($\simeq$0.1 Myr old) in a low-metallicity environment ($\simeq$$-$0.7 dex). We performed deep JWST/NIRCam and MIRI imaging of two star-forming clusters in Digel Cloud 2, a star-forming region in the Outer Galaxy ($R_G \gtrsim 15$ kpc). The very high sensitivity and spatial resolution of JWST enable us to resolve cluster members clearly down to a mass detection limit of 0.02 $M_\odot$, enabling the first detection of brown dwarfs in low-metallicity clusters. Fifty-two and ninety-one sources were extracted in mass-$A_V$-limited samples in the two clusters, from which Initial mass functions (IMFs) were derived by model-fitting the F200W band luminosity function, resulting in IMF peak masses (hereafter $M_C$) $\log M_C / M_\odot \simeq -1.5 \pm 0.5$ for both clusters. Although the uncertainties are rather large, the obtained $M_C$ values are lower than those in any previous study ($\log M_C / M_\odot \sim -0.5$). Comparison with the local open clusters with similar ages to the target clusters ($\sim$$10^6$-$10^7$ yr) suggests a metallicity dependence of $M_C$, with lower $M_C$ at lower metallicities, while the comparison with globular clusters, similarly low metallicities but considerably older ($\sim$$10^{10}$ yr), suggests that the target clusters have not yet experienced significant dynamical evolution and remain in their initial physical condition. The lower $M_C$ is also consistent with the theoretical expectation of the lower Jeans mass due to the higher gas density under such low metallicity. The extreme outer Galaxy (EOG), which we define as the region of the Milky Way with a galactocentric radius of more than 18 kpc, provides an excellent opportunity to study star formation in an environment significantly different from that in the solar neighborhood because of its lower metallicity and lower gas density. We carried out near- and mid-infrared (NIR and MIR) imaging observations toward two star-forming clusters located in the EOG using JWST NIRCam and MIRI with nine filters: F115W, F150W, F200W, F350W, F405N, F444W, F770W, F1280W, and F2100W. In this paper, we present an overview of the observations, data reduction, and initial results. The NIR sensitivity is approximately 10--80 times better than our previous observation with the Subaru 8.2 m telescope. Accordingly, the mass detection limit reaches to about 0.01--0.05 $M_\odot$, which is about 10 times better than the previous observations. At MIR wavelengths, the high sensitivity and resolution data enable us to resolve individual young stellar objects in such a distant region for the first time. The mass detection limit at MIR F770W filter reaches about 0.1--0.3 $M_\odot$. With these new observations, we have identified components of the clusters that previous surveys did not detect, including class 0 candidates, outflow/jet components, and distinctive nebular structures. These data will enable us to investigate the properties of star formation in the EOG at the same depth of detail as previous observations of star formation in the solar neighborhood., Comment: 39 pages, 21 figures, and 5 tables. Fragmentation during the early stages of high-mass star formation is crucial for understanding the formation of high-mass clusters. We investigated fragmentation within thirty-nine high-mass star-forming clumps as part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Survey of 70 $\mu$m Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). Considering projection effects, we have estimated core separations for 839 cores identified from the continuum emission and found mean values between 0.08 and 0.32 pc within each clump. We find compatibility of the observed core separations and masses with the thermal Jeans length and mass, respectively. We also present sub-clump structures revealed by the 7 m-array continuum emission. Comparison of the Jeans parameters using clump and sub-clump densities with the separation and masses of gravitationally bound cores suggests that they can be explained by clump fragmentation, implying the simultaneous formation of sub-clumps and cores within rather than a step-by-step hierarchical fragmentation. The number of cores in each clump positively correlates with the clump surface density and the number expected from the thermal Jeans fragmentation. We also find that the higher the fraction of protostellar cores, the larger the dynamic range of the core mass, implying that the cores are growing in mass as the clump evolves. The ASHES sample exhibits various fragmentation patterns: aligned, scattered, clustered, and sub-clustered. Using the Q-parameter, which can help to distinguish between centrally condensed and subclustered spatial core distributions, we finally find that in the early evolutionary stages of high-mass star formation, cores tend to follow a subclustered distribution., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ. 19 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

Massive infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are considered to host the earliest stages of high-mass star formation. In particular, 70 $\mu$m dark IRDCs are the colder and more quiescent clouds. At a scale of about 5000 au using formaldehyde (H2CO) emission, we investigate the kinetic temperature of dense cores in 12 IRDCs obtained from the pilot ALMA Survey of 70 $\mu$m dark High-mass clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). Compared to 1.3 mm dust continuum and other molecular lines, such as C18O and deuterated species, we find that H2CO is mainly sensitive to low-velocity outflow components rather than to quiescent gas expected in the early phases of star formation. The kinetic temperatures of these components range from 26 to 300 K. The Mach number reaches about 15 with an average value of about 4, suggesting that the velocity distribution of gas traced by H2CO is significantly influenced by a supersonic non-thermal component. In addition, we detect warm line emission from HC3N and OCS in 14 protostellar cores, which requires high excitation temperatures (Eu/k ~ 100 K). We examine spatial variations of the C$^0$/CO abundance ratio ($X_{\mathrm{C/CO}}$) in the vicinity of the $\gamma$-ray supernova remnant W51C, based on [CI] ($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$), $^{12}$CO(1-0), and $^{13}$CO(1-0) observations with the ASTE and Nobeyama 45-m telescopes. We find that $X_{\mathrm{C/CO}}$ varies in a range of 0.02-0.16 (0.05 in median) inside the molecular clouds of $A_V>$100 mag, where photodissociation of CO by the interstellar UV is negligible. Furthermore, $X_{\mathrm{C/CO}}$ is locally enhanced up to by a factor of four near the W51C center, depending on the projected distance from the W51C center. In high-$A_V$ molecular clouds, $X_{\mathrm{C/CO}}$ is determined by the ratio of the cosmic-ray (CR) ionization rate to the H$_2$ density, and we find no clear spatial variation of the H$_2$ density against the projected distance. Hence, the high CR ionization rate may locally enhance $X_{\mathrm{C/CO}}$ near the W51C center. We also find that the observed spatial extent of the enhanced $X_{\mathrm{C/CO}}$ ($\sim$17 pc) is consistent with the diffusion distance of CRs with the energy of 100 MeV. The fact suggests that the low-energy CRs accelerated in W51C enhance $X_{\mathrm{C/CO}}$. The CR ionization rate at the $X_{\mathrm{C/CO}}$-enhanced cloud is estimated to be 3$\times$10$^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$ on the basis of time-dependent PDR simulations of $X_{\mathrm{C/CO}}$, the value of which is 30 times higher than that in the standard Galactic environment. The initial conditions found in infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) provide insights on how high-mass stars and stellar clusters form. We have conducted high-angular resolution and high-sensitivity observations toward thirty-nine massive IRDC clumps, which have been mosaicked using the 12m and 7m arrays from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The targets are 70 $\mu$m dark massive (220-4900 $M_\odot$), dense ($>$10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$), and cold ($\sim$10-20K) clumps located at distances between 2 and 6 kpc. We identify an unprecedented number of 839 cores, with masses between 0.05 and 81 $M_\odot$ using 1.3 mm dust continuum emission. About 55% of the cores are low-mass ($<$1 $M_\odot$), whereas $\lesssim$1% (7/839) are high-mass ($\gtrsim$27 $M_\odot$). We detect no high-mass prestellar cores. The most massive cores (MMC) identified within individual clumps lack sufficient mass to form high-mass stars without additional mass feeding. We find that the mass of the MMCs is correlated with the clump surface density, implying denser clumps produce more massive cores and a larger number of cores. There is no significant mass segregation except for a few tentative detections. In contrast, most clumps show segregation once the clump density is considered instead of mass. Although the dust continuum emission resolves clumps in a network of filaments, some of which consist of hub-filament systems, the majority of the MMCs are not found in the hubs. We present the dynamical properties of 294 cores embedded in twelve IRDCs observed as part of the ASHES Survey. Protostellar cores have higher gas masses, surface densities, column densities, and volume densities than prestellar cores, indicating core mass growth from the prestellar to the protostellar phase. We find that ~80% of cores with virial parameter ($\alpha$) measurements are gravitationally bound ($\alpha$< 2). We also find an anti-correlation between the mass and the virial parameter of cores, with massive cores having on average lower virial parameters. Protostellar cores are more gravitationally bound than prestellar cores, with an average virial parameter of 1.2 and 1.5, respectively. The observed non-thermal velocity dispersion (from N$_{2}$D$^{+}$ or DCO$^{+}$) is consistent with simulations in which turbulence is continuously injected, whereas the core-to-core velocity dispersion is neither in agreement with driven nor decaying turbulence simulations. We find no significant increment in the line velocity dispersion from prestellar to protostellar cores, suggesting that dense gas within the core traced by these deuterated molecules is not yet severely affected by turbulence injected from outflow activity at the early evolutionary stages traced in ASHES. The most massive cores are strongly self-gravitating and have greater surface density, Mach number, and velocity dispersion than cores with lower masses. Dense cores have not significant velocity shifts relative to their low-density envelopes, suggesting that dense cores are co-moving with their envelopes. We present deep near-infrared (NIR) imaging of Sh 2-209 (S209), a low-metallicity (${\rm [O/H]} = - 0.5$ dex) HII region in the Galaxy. From the NIR images, combined with astrometric data from Gaia EDR3, we estimate the distance to S209 to be 2.5 kpc. This is close enough to enable us to resolve cluster members clearly ($\simeq$1000 AU separation) down to a mass-detection limit of $\simeq$0.1 $M_\odot$, and we have identified two star-forming clusters in S209, with individual cluster scales $\sim$1 pc. We employ a set of model luminosity functions to derive the underlying initial mass functions (IMFs) and ages for both clusters. The IMFs we obtained for both clusters exhibit slightly flat high-mass slopes ($\Gamma \simeq -1.0$) compared to the Salpeter IMF ($\Gamma = -1.35$), and their break mass of $\simeq$0.1 $M_\odot$ is lower than those generally seen in the solar neighborhood ($\sim$0.3 $M_\odot$). In particular, because the S209 main cluster is a star-forming cluster with a larger number of members ($\sim$1500) than the number ($\sim$100) in regions previously studied in such environments, it is possible for the first time to derive the IMF in a low-metallicity environment with high accuracy over the wide mass range 0.1--20 $M_\odot$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a study of chemistry toward 294 dense cores in 12 molecular clumps using the data obtained from the ALMA Survey of 70 $\mu \rm m$ dark High-mass clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). We identified 97 protostellar cores and 197 prestellar core candidates based on the detection of outflows and molecular transitions of high upper energy levels ($E_{u}/k > 45$ K). The detection rate of the N$_{2}$D$^{+}$ emission toward the protostellar cores is 38%, which is higher than 9% for the prestellar cores, indicating that N$_{2}$D$^{+}$ does not exclusively trace prestellar cores. The detection rates of the DCO$^{+}$ emission are 35% for the prestellar cores and 49% for the protostellar cores, which are higher than those of N$_{2}$D$^{+}$, implying that DCO$^{+}$ appears more frequently than N$_{2}$D$^{+}$ in both prestellar and protostellar cores. Both N$_{2}$D$^{+}$ and DCO$^{+}$ abundances appear to decrease from the prestellar to protostellar stage. The DCN, C$_{2}$D and $^{13}$CS emission lines are rarely seen in the dense cores of early evolutionary phases. The detection rate of the H$_{2}$CO emission toward dense cores is 52%, three times higher than that of CH$_{3}$OH (17%). In addition, the H$_{2}$CO detection rate, abundance, line intensities, and line widths increase with the core evolutionary status, suggesting that the H$_{2}$CO line emission is sensitive to protostellar activity., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ. 36 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables. Studying the physical and chemical properties of cold and dense molecular clouds is crucial for the understanding of how stars form. Under the typical conditions of infrared dark clouds, CO is removed from the gas phase and trapped on to the surface of dust grains by the so-called depletion process. This suggests that the CO depletion factor ($f_{\rm D}$) can be a useful chemical indicator for identifying cold and dense regions (i.e., prestellar cores). We have used the 1.3 mm continuum and C$^{18}$O(2-1) data observed at the resolution of $\sim$5000 au in the ALMA Survey of 70 $\mu$m Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES) to construct averaged maps of $f_{\rm D}$ in twelve clumps to characterise the earliest stages of the high-mass star formation process. The average $f_{\rm D}$ determined for 277 of the 294 ASHES cores follows an unexpected increase from the prestellar to the protostellar stage. If we exclude the temperature effect due to the slight variations in the NH$_3$ kinetic temperature among different cores, we explain this result as a dependence primarily on the average gas density, which increases in cores where protostellar conditions prevail. This shows that $f_{\rm D}$ determined in high-mass star-forming regions at the core scale is insufficient to distinguish among prestellar and protostellar conditions for the individual cores, and should be complemented by information provided by additional tracers. However, we confirm that the clump-averaged $f_{\rm D}$ values correlates with the luminosity-to-mass ratio of each source, which is known to trace the evolution of the star formation process., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. The outer Galaxy beyond the Outer Arm represents a promising opportunity to study star formation in an environment vastly different from the solar neighborhood. In our previous study, we identified 788 candidate star-forming regions in the outer Galaxy (at galactocentric radii $R_{\rm G}$ $\ge$ 13.5 kpc) based on Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-infrared (MIR) all-sky survey. In this paper, we investigate the statistical properties of the candidates and their parental molecular clouds derived from the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO) CO survey. We show that the molecular clouds with candidates have a shallower slope of cloud mass function, a larger fraction of clouds bound by self-gravity, and a larger density than the molecular clouds without candidates. To investigate the star formation efficiency (SFE) at different $R_{\rm G}$, we used two parameters: 1) the fraction of molecular clouds with candidates and 2) the monochromatic MIR luminosities of candidates per parental molecular cloud mass. We did not find any clear correlation between SFE parameters and $R_{\rm G}$ at $R_{\rm G}$ of 13.5 kpc to 20.0 kpc, suggesting that the SFE is independent of environmental parameters such as metallicity and gas surface density, which vary considerably with $R_{\rm G}$. Previous studies reported that the SFE per year (SFE/yr) derived from the star-formation rate surface density per total gas surface density, HI plus H$_2$, decreases with increased $R_{\rm G}$. Metal-deficient stars are important tracers for understanding the early formation of the Galaxy. Recent large-scale surveys with both photometric and spectroscopic data have reported an increasing number of metal-deficient stars whose kinematic features are consistent with those of the disk stellar populations. We report the discovery of an RR~Lyrae variable (hereafter RRL) that is located within the thick disk and has an orbit consistent with the thick-disk kinematics. Our target RRL (HD 331986) is located at around 1 kpc from the Sun and, with V=11.3, is among the 130 brightest RRLs known so far. However, this object was scarcely studied because it is in the midplane of the Galaxy, the Galactic latitude around -1 deg. Its near-infrared spectrum (0.91-1.32 micron) shows no absorption line except hydrogen lines of the Paschen series, suggesting [Fe/H] less than -2.5. It is the most metal-deficient RRL, at least, among the RRLs whose orbits are consistent with the disk kinematics, although we cannot determine to which of the disk and the halo it belongs. We have observed the 70 $\mu$m dark infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G14.492-00.139 in the N$_2$D$^+$ $J$=3--2, DCO$^+$ $J$=3--2, DCN $J$=3--2, and C$^{18}$O $J$=2--1 lines, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) as part of the ALMA Survey of 70 $\mu$m Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). We find that the spatial distribution is different among the observed emission from the deuterated molecular lines. The N$_2$D$^+$ emission traces relatively quiescent regions, while both the DCO$^+$ and DCN emission emanates mainly from regions with signs of active star-formation. In addition, the DCO$^+$/N$_2$D$^+$ ratio is found to be lower in several dense cores than in starless cores embedded in low-mass star-forming regions. By comparing the observational results with chemical model calculations, we discuss the origin of the low DCO$^+$/N$_2$D$^+$ ratio in this IRDC clump. The low DCO$^+$/N$_2$D$^+$ ratio can be explained if the temperature of the dense cores is in the range between the sublimation temperature of N$_2$ ($\sim$20 K) and CO ($\sim$25 K). The results suggest that the dense cores in G14.492-00.139 are warmer and denser than the dense cores in low-mass star-forming regions., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Interstellar chemistry in low metallicity environments is crucial to understand chemical processes in the past metal-poor universe. Recent studies of interstellar molecules in nearby low-metallicity galaxies have suggested that the metallicity has a significant effect on chemistry of star-forming cores. Here we report the first detection of a hot molecular core in the extreme outer Galaxy, which is an excellent laboratory to study star formation and interstellar medium in a Galactic low-metallicity environment. The target star-forming region, WB89-789, is located at the galactocentric distance of 19 kpc. Our ALMA observations in 241-246, 256-261, 337-341, and 349-353 GHz have detected a variety of carbon-, oxygen-, nitrogen-, sulfur-, and silicon-bearing species, including complex organic molecules (COMs) containing up to nine atoms, towards a warm (>100 K) and compact (<0.03 pc) region associated with a protostar (~8x10^3 L_sun). Deuterated species such as HDO, HDCO, D2CO, and CH2DOH are also detected. A comparison of fractional abundances of COMs relative to CH3OH between the outer Galactic hot core and an inner Galactic counterpart shows a remarkable similarity. On the other hand, the molecular abundances in the present source do not resemble those of low-metallicity hot cores in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The results suggest that a great molecular complexity exists even in a primordial environment of the extreme outer Galaxy. With a mass of $\sim$1000 $M_\odot$ and a surface density of $\sim$0.5 g cm$^{-2}$, G023.477+0.114 also known as IRDC 18310-4 is an infrared dark cloud (IRDC) that has the potential to form high-mass stars and has been recognized as a promising prestellar clump candidate. To characterize the early stages of high-mass star formation, we have observed G023.477+0.114 as part of the ALMA Survey of 70 $\mu$m Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). We have conducted $\sim$1."2 resolution observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 1.3 mm in dust continuum and molecular line emission. We identified 11 cores, whose masses range from 1.1 $M_\odot$ to 19.0 $M_\odot$. Ignoring magnetic fields, the virial parameters of the cores are below unity, implying that the cores are gravitationally bound. However, when magnetic fields are included, the prestellar cores are close to virial equilibrium, while the protostellar cores remain sub-virialized. Star formation activity has already started in this clump. Four collimated outflows are detected in CO and SiO. H$_2$CO and CH$_3$OH emission coincide with the high-velocity components seen in the CO and SiO emission. The outflows are randomly oriented for the natal filament and the magnetic field. The position-velocity diagrams suggest that episodic mass ejection has already begun even in this very early phase of protostellar formation. The masses of the identified cores are comparable to the expected maximum stellar mass that this IRDC could form (8-19 $M_\odot$). We present a spatio-kinematical analysis of the CO~($J$=2$\rightarrow$1) line emission, observed with the Atacama Large Millimter/submillimter Array (ALMA), of the outflow associated with the most massive core, ALMA1, in the 70 $\mu$m dark clump G010.991$-$00.082. The position-velocity (P-V) diagram of the molecular outflow exhibits a peculiar $\mathsf{S}$-shaped morphology that has not been seen in any other star forming region. We propose a spatio-kinematical model for the bipolar molecular outflow that consists of a decelerating high-velocity component surrounded by a slower component whose velocity increases with distance from the central source. The physical interpretation of the model is in terms of a jet that decelerates as it entrains material from the ambient medium, which has been predicted by calculations and numerical simulations of molecular outflows in the past. One side of the outflow is shorter and shows a stronger deceleration, suggesting that the medium through which the jet moves is significantly inhomogeneous. The age of the outflow is estimated to be $\tau$$\approx$1300 years, after correction for a mean inclination of the system of $\approx$57$^{\circ}$., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures. In deep near-infrared imaging of the low-metallicity (${\rm [O/H]}=-0.7$ dex) H II region Sh 2-127 (S127) with Subaru/MOIRCS, we detected two young clusters with 413 members (S127A) in a slightly extended H II region and another with 338 members (S127B) in a compact H II region. The limiting magnitude was $K=21.3$ mag (10$\sigma$), corresponding to a mass detection limit of $\sim$0.2 $M_\odot$. These clusters are an order of magnitude larger than previously studied young low-metallicity clusters and larger than the majority of solar neighborhood young clusters. Fits to the K-band luminosity functions indicate very young cluster ages of 0.5 Myr for S127A and 0.1-0.5 Myr for S127B, consistent with the large extinction (up to $A_V\simeq20$ mag) from thick molecular clouds and the presence of a compact H II region and class I source candidates, and suggest that the initial mass function (IMF) of the low-metallicity clusters is indistinguishable from typical solar neighborhood IMFs. Disk fractions of $28\% \pm 3\%$ for S127A and $40\% \pm 4\%$ for S127B are significantly lower than those of similarly aged solar neighborhood clusters ($\sim$50$\%$-60$\%$). The disk fraction for S127B is higher than those of previously studied low-metallicity clusters ($<$30 $\%$), probably due to S127B's age. This suggests that a large fraction of very young stars in low-metallicity environments have disks, but the disks are lost on a very short timescale. These results are consistent with our previous studies of low-metallicity star-forming regions, suggesting that a solar neighborhood IMF and low disk fraction are typical characteristics for low-metallicity regions, regardless of cluster scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

We present observations of the $^3P_1$-$^3P_0$ fine-structure line of atomic carbon using the ASTE 10 m sub-mm telescope towards RCW38, the youngest super star cluster in the Milky Way. The detected [CI] emission is compared with the CO $J$ = 1-0 image cube presented in Fukui et al. (2016) which has an angular resolution of 40$^{\prime \prime}$ ($\sim$ 0.33 pc). The overall distribution of the [CI] emission in this cluster is similar to that of the $^{13}$CO emission. The optical depth of the [CI] emission was found to be $\tau$ = 0.1-0.6, suggesting mostly optically thin emission. An empirical conversion factor from the [CI] integrated intensity to the H$_2$ column density was estimated as $X_{\rm [CI]}$ = 6.3 $\times$ 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ km$^{-1}$ s (for visual extinction: $A_V$ $\le$ 10 mag) and 1.4 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ km$^{-1}$ s (for $A_V$ of 10-100 mag). The column density ratio of the [CI] to CO ($N_{\rm [CI]}/N_{\rm CO}$) was derived as $\sim$ 0.1 for $A_V$ of 10-100 mag, which is consistent with that of the Orion cloud presented in Ikeda et al. (2002). However, our results cover an $A_V$ regime of up to 100 mag, which is wider than the coverage found in Orion, which reach up to $\sim$ 60 mag. Such a high [CI]/CO ratio in a high $A_V$ region is difficult to be explained by the plane-parallel photodissociation region (PDR) model, which predicts that this ratio is close to 0 due to the heavy shielding of the ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Our results suggest that the molecular gas in this cluster is highly clumpy, allowing deep penetration of UV radiation even at averaged $A_V$ values of 100 mag. We present a study of outflows at extremely early stages of high-mass star formation obtained from the ALMA Survey of 70 $\mu \rm m$ dark High-mass clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). Twelve massive 3.6$-$70 $\mu \rm m$ dark prestellar clump candidates were observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Band 6. Forty-three outflows are identified toward 41 out of 301 dense cores using the CO and SiO emission lines, yielding a detection rate of 14%. We discover 6 episodic molecular outflows associated with low- to high-mass cores, indicating that episodic outflows (and therefore episodic accretion) begin at extremely early stages of protostellar evolution for a range of core masses. The time span between consecutive ejection events is much smaller than those found in more evolved stages, which indicates that the ejection episodicity timescale is likely not constant over time. The estimated outflow dynamical timescale appears to increase with core masses, which likely indicates that more massive cores have longer accretion timescales than less massive cores. The lower accretion rates in these 70 $\mu \rm m$ dark objects compared to the more evolved protostars indicate that the accretion rates increase with time. The total outflow energy rate is smaller than the turbulent energy dissipation rate, which suggests that outflow induced turbulence cannot sustain the internal clump turbulence at the current epoch. We often detect thermal SiO emission within these 70 $\mu \rm m$ dark clumps that is unrelated to CO outflows. In this study, we analyze molecular gas formation in neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) clouds using the latest CO data obtained from the four-beam receiver system on a 45-m telescope (FOREST) unbiased Galactic plane imaging survey with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope (FUGIN) and HI data taken from the Very Large Array (VLA) Galactic plane survey (VGPS). We applied a dendrogram algorithm to the HI data cube to identify HI clouds, and we calculated the HI mass and molecular gas mass by summing the CO line intensity within each HI cloud. On the basis of the results, we created a catalog of 5,737 identified HI clouds with local standard of rest (LSR) velocity of $V_{\rm LSR}\le -20$ km s$^{-1}$ in Galactic longitude and latitude ranges of $20^\circ \le l \le 50^\circ$ and $-1^\circ \le b \le 1^\circ$, respectively. We found that most of the HI clouds are distributed within a Galactocentric distance of 16 kpc, most of which are in the Cold Neutral Medium (CNM) phase. In addition, we determined that the high-mass end of the mass HI function is well fitted with the power-law function with an index of 2.3. Although two sequences of self-gravitating and diffuse clouds are expected to appear in the M$_{\rm tot}$-M$_{{\rm H}_2}$ diagram according to previous works based on a plane-parallel model, the observational data show only a single sequence with large scattering within these two sequences. This implies that most of the clouds are mixtures of these two types of clouds. Moreover, we suggest the following scenario of molecular gas formation: An HI-dominant cloud evolved with increasing H$_2$ mass along a path of $M_{{\rm H}_2} \propto M_{\rm tot}^2$ by collecting diffuse gas before reaching and moving along the curves of the two sequences., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures and 2 tables

We report measurements of parallax and proper motion for four 22 GHz water maser sources as part of VERA Outer Rotation Curve project. All sources show Galactic latitudes of $>$ 2$^{\circ}$ and Galactocentric distances of $>$ 11 kpc at the Galactic longitude range of 95$^{\circ}$ $< l <$ 126$^{\circ}$. The sources trace the Galactic warp reaching to 200$\sim$400 pc, and indicate the signature of the warp to 600 pc toward the north Galactic pole. The new results along with previous results in the literature show the maximum height of the Galactic warp is increased with Galactocentric distance. Also, we examined velocities perpendicular to the disk for the sample, and found an oscillatory behavior between the vertical velocities and Galactic heights. This behavior suggests the existence of the bending (vertical density) waves, possibly induced by a perturbing satellite (e.g. passage of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy)., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ; 4 figures & 6 tables

(Abridged) ASHES has been designed to systematically characterize the earliest stages and to constrain theories of high-mass star formation. A total of 12 massive (>500 $M_{\odot}$), cold (<15 K), 3.6-70 $\mu$m dark prestellar clump candidates, embedded in IRDCs, were carefully selected in the pilot survey to be observed with ALMA. We mosaiced each clump (~1 arcmin^2) in dust and line emission with the 12m/7m/TP arrays at 224 GHz, resulting in ~1.2" resolution (~4800 AU). As the first paper of the series, we concentrate on the dust emission to reveal the clump fragmentation. We detect 294 cores, from which 84 (29%) are categorized as protostellar based on outflow activity or 'warm core' line emission. The remaining 210 (71%) are considered prestellar core candidates. The number of detected cores is independent of the mass sensitivity range of the observations. On average, more massive clumps tend to form more cores. We find a large population of low-mass (<1 M) cores and no high-mass (>30 $M_{\odot}$) prestellar cores. The most massive prestellar core has a mass of 11 $M_{\odot}$. From the prestellar CMF, we derive a power law index of 1.17+-0.1, slightly shallower than Salpeter (1.35). We use the MST technique to characterize the separation between cores and their spatial distribution, and derive mass segregation ratios. While there is a range of core masses and separations detected in the sample, the mean separation and mass of cores are well explained by thermal fragmentation and are inconsistent with turbulent Jeans fragmentation. The core spatial distribution is well described by hierarchical subclustering rather than centrally peaked clustering. There is no conclusive evidence of mass segregation. The outer Galaxy beyond the Outer Arm provides a good opportunity to study star formation in an environment significantly different from that in the solar neighborhood. However, star-forming regions in the outer Galaxy have never been comprehensively studied or cataloged because of the difficulties in detecting them at such large distances. We studied 33 known young star-forming regions associated with 13 molecular clouds at $R_{\rm G}$ $\ge$ 13.5 kpc in the outer Galaxy with data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-infrared all-sky survey. From their color distribution, we developed a simple identification criterion of star-forming regions in the outer Galaxy with the WISE color. We applied the criterion to all the WISE sources in the molecular clouds in the outer Galaxy at $R_{\rm G}$ $\ge$ 13.5 kpc detected with the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO) $^{12}$CO survey of the outer Galaxy, of which the survey region is 102$^\circ$.49 $\le$ $l$ $\le$ 141$^\circ$.54, $-$3$^\circ$.03 $\le$ $b$ $\le$ 5$^\circ$.41, and successfully identified 711 new candidate star-forming regions in 240 molecular clouds. The large number of samples enables us to perform the statistical study of star-formation properties in the outer Galaxy for the first time. We obtained deep near-infrared images of Sh 2-208, one of the lowest-metallicity HII regions in the Galaxy, [O/H] = -0.8 dex. We detected a young cluster in the center of the HII region with a limiting magnitude of K = 18.0 mag (10sigma), which corresponds to a mass detection limit of ~0.2 M_sun. This enables the comparison of star-forming properties under low metallicity with those of the solar neighborhood. We identified 89 cluster members. From the fitting of the K-band luminosity function (KLF), the age and distance of the cluster are estimated to be ~0.5 Myr and ~4 kpc, respectively. The estimated young age is consistent with the detection of strong CO emission in the cluster region and the estimated large extinction of cluster members (Av ~ 4--25 mag). The observed KLF suggests that the underlying initial mass function (IMF) of the low-metallicity cluster is not significantly different from canonical IMFs in the solar neighborhood in terms of both high-mass slope and IMF peak (characteristic mass). Despite the very young age, the disk fraction of the cluster is estimated at only 27pm6 %, which is significantly lower than those in the solar metallicity. Those results are similar to Sh 2-207, which is another low-metallicity star-forming region close to Sh 2-208 with a separation of 12 pc,suggesting that their star-forming activities in low-metallicity environments are essentially identical to those in the solar neighborhood, except for the disk dispersal timescale. From large-scale mid-infrared images, we suggest that sequential star formation is taking place in Sh 2-207, Sh 2-208 and the surrounding region, triggered by an expanding bubble with a ~30 pc radius., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, and 2 Tables. We obtained the near-infrared (NIR) high-resolution ($R\equiv\lambda/\Delta\lambda\sim20,000$) spectra of the seven brightest early-type stars in the Cygnus OB2 association for investigating the environmental dependence of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). The WINERED spectrograph mounted on the Araki 1.3m telescope in Japan was used to collect data. All 20 of the known DIBs within the wavelength coverage of WINERED ($0.91<\lambda<1.36\mu$m) were clearly detected along all lines of sight because of their high flux density in the NIR wavelength range and the large extinction. The equivalent widths (EWs) of DIBs were not correlated with the column densities of C$_2$ molecules, which trace the patchy dense component, suggesting that the NIR DIB carriers are distributed mainly in the diffuse component. On the basis of the correlations among the NIR DIBs both for stars in Cyg OB2 and stars observed previously, $\lambda\lambda$10780, 10792, 11797, 12623, and 13175 are found to constitute a "family", in which the DIBs are correlated well over the wide EW range. In contrast, the EW of $\lambda$10504 is found to remain almost constant over the stars in Cyg OB2. The extinction estimated from the average EW of $\lambda$10504 ($A_V\sim3.6$mag) roughly corresponds to the lower limit of the extinction distribution of OB stars in Cyg OB2. This suggests that $\lambda$10504 is absorbed only by the foreground clouds, implying that the carrier of $\lambda$10504 is completely destroyed in Cyg OB2, probably by the strong UV radiation field. In order to investigate the Galactic-scale environmental effects on the evolution of protoplanetary disks, we explored the near-infrared (NIR) disk fraction of the Quartet cluster, which is a young cluster in the innermost Galactic disk at the Galactocentric radius Rg ~ 4 kpc. Because this cluster has a typical cluster mass of ~10^3 M_sun as opposed to very massive clusters, which have been observed in previous studies (>10^4 M_sun), we can avoid intra-cluster effects such as strong UV field from OB stars. Although the age of the Quartet is previously estimated to be 3-8 Myr old, we find that it is most likely ~3-4.5 Myr old. In moderately deep JHK images from the UKIDSS survey, we found eight HAeBe candidates in the cluster, and performed K-band medium-resolution ($R \equiv \Delta \lambda / \lambda ~ 800$) spectroscopy for three of them with the Subaru 8.2 m telescope. These are found to have both Br\gamma absorption lines as well as CO bandhead emission, suggesting that they are HAeBe stars with protoplanetary disks. We estimated the intermediate-mass disk fraction (IMDF) to be ~25 % for the cluster, suggesting slightly higher IMDF compared to those for young clusters in the solar neighborhood with similar cluster age, although such conclusion should await future spectroscopic study of all candidates of cluster members., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, and 2 Tables. To study star formation in low metallicity environments ([M/H] ~ -1 ,dex), we obtained deep near-infrared (NIR) images of Sh 2-207 (S207), which is an HII region in the outer Galaxy with spectroscopically determined metallicity of [O/H] ~= -0.8 dex. We identified a young cluster in the western region of S207 with a limiting magnitude of Ks =19.0 mag (10 sigma) that corresponds to a mass detection limit of <~0.1 M_sun and enables the comparison of star-forming properties under low metallicity with those of the solar neighborhood. From the fitting of the K-band luminosity function (KLF), the age and distance of S207 cluster are estimated at 2-3Myr and ~4 kpc, respectively. The estimated age is consistent with the suggestion of small extinctions of stars in the cluster (Av ~ 3 mag) and the non-detection of molecular clouds. The reasonably good fit between observed KLF and model KLF suggests that the underlying initial mass function (IMF) of the cluster down to the detection limit is not significantly different from the typical IMFs in the solar metallicity. From the fraction of stars with NIR excesses, a low disk fraction (<10 %) in the cluster with relatively young age is suggested, as we had previously proposed., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, and 3 Tables. We present a comprehensive survey of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in $0.91-1.32\mu$m with a newly-developed near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph, WINERED, mounted on the Araki 1.3 m Telescope in Japan. We obtained high-resolution ($R=28,300$) spectra of 25 early-type stars with color excesses of $0.07

We report the discovery of star formation activity in perhaps the most distant molecular cloud in the extreme outer galaxy. We performed deep near infrared imaging with the Subaru 8.2 m telescope, and found two young embedded clusters at two CO peaks of Digel Cloud 1 at the kinematic distance of D = 16 kpc (Galactocentric radius RG = 22 kpc). We identified 18 and 45 cluster members in the two peaks, and the estimated stellar density are ~ 5 and ~ 3 pc^-2, respectively. The observed K-band luminosity function suggests that the age of the clusters is less than 1 Myr and also the distance to the clusters is consistent with the kinematic distance. On the sky, Cloud 1 is located very close to the H I peak of high-velocity cloud (HVC) Complex H, and there are some H I intermediate velocity structures between the Complex H and the Galactic disk, which could indicate an interaction between them. We suggest possibility that Complex H impacting on the Galactic disk has triggered star formation in Cloud 1 as well as the formation of Cloud 1 molecular cloud., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, and 2 tables.
