Primordial black holes (PBHs) can form in the early Universe from the collapse of rare, large density fluctuations. They have never been observed, but this fact is enough to constrain the amplitude of fluctuations on very small scales which cannot be otherwise probed. Because PBHs form only in very rare large fluctuations, the number of PBHs formed is extremely sensitive to changes in the shape of the tail of the fluctuation distribution - which depends on the amount of non-Gaussianity present. We first study how local non-Gaussianity of arbitrary size up to fifth order affects the abundance and constraints from PBHs, finding that they depend strongly on even small amounts of non-Gaussianity and the upper bound on the allowed amplitude of the power spectrum can vary by several orders of magnitude. The sign of the non-linearity parameters (f_{NL}, g_{NL}, etc) are particularly important. We also study the abundance and constraints from PBHs in the curvaton scenario, in which case the complete non-linear probability distribution is known, and find that truncating to any given order (i.e. to order f_{NL} or g_{NL}, etc) does not give accurate results., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures. We study the evolution of the non-linear curvature perturbation during perturbative reheating, and hence how observables evolve to their final values which we may compare against observations. Our study includes the evolution of the two trispectrum parameters, $\gnl$ and $\taunl$, as well as the scale dependence of both $\fnl$ and $\taunl$. In general the evolution is significant and must be taken into account, which means that models of multifield inflation cannot be compared to observations without specifying how the subsequent reheating takes place. If the trispectrum is large at the end of inflation, it normally remains large at the end of reheating. In the classes of models we study, it is very hard to generate $\taunl\gg\fnl^2$, regardless of the decay rates of the fields. Similarly, for the classes of models in which $\gnl\simeq\taunl$ during slow--roll inflation, we find the relation typically remains valid during reheating. Therefore it is possible to observationally test such classes of models without specifying the parameters of reheating, even though the individual observables are sensitive to the details of reheating. It is hard to generate an observably large $\gnl$ however. The runnings, $\nfnl$ and $\ntaunl$, tend to satisfy a consistency relation $\ntaunl=(3/2)\nfnl$, but are in general too small to be observed for the class of models considered regardless of reheating timescale., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. v2: minor changes to match the published JCAP version

We study the effects of perturbative reheating on the evolution of the curvature perturbation \zeta, in two-field inflation models. We use numerical methods to explore the sensitivity of f_NL, n_s and r to the reheating process, and present simple qualitative arguments to explain our results. In general, if a large non-Gaussian signal exists at the start of reheating, it will remain non zero at the end of reheating. Unless all isocurvature modes have completely decayed before the start of reheating, we find that the non-linearity parameter, f_NL, can be sensitive to the reheating timescale, and that this dependence is most appreciable for `runaway' inflationary potentials that only have a minimum in one direction. For potentials with a minimum in both directions, f_NL can also be sensitive to reheating if a mild hierarchy exists between the decay rates of each field. Within the class of models studied, we find that the spectral index n_s, is fairly insensitive to large changes in the field decay rates, indicating that n_s is a more robust inflationary observable, unlike the non-linearity parameter f_NL. Our results imply that the statistics of \zeta, especially f_NL, can only be reliably used to discriminate between models of two-field inflation if the physics of reheating are properly accounted for., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures. Tight observational limits on their abundance constrain the amplitude of the primordial fluctuations on very small scales which can not otherwise be constrained, with PBH's only forming from the extremely rare large fluctuations. The number of PBH's formed is therefore sensitive to small changes in the shape of the tail of the fluctuation distribution, which itself depends on the amount of non-Gaussianity present. We study, for the first time, how quadratic and cubic local non-Gaussianity of arbitrary size (parameterised by f_nl and g_nl respectively) affects the PBH abundance and the resulting constraints on the amplitude of the fluctuations on very small scales. Intriguingly we find that even non-linearity parameters of order unity have a significant impact on the PBH abundance. The sign of the non-Gaussianity is particularly important, with the constraint on the allowed fluctuation amplitude tightening by an order of magnitude as f_nl changes from just -0.5 to 0.5. We find that if PBH's are observed in the future, then regardless of the amplitude of the fluctuations, non-negligible negative f_nl would be ruled out. We propose a method to probe higher-order correlators of the primordial density field through the inhomogeneity of local non-Gaussian parameters, such as f_NL, measured within smaller patches of the sky. Correlators between n-point functions measured in one patch of the sky and k-point functions measured in another patch depend upon the (n+k)-point functions over the entire sky. The inhomogeneity of non-Gaussian parameters may be a feasible way to detect or constrain higher-order correlators in local models of non-Gaussianity, as well as to distinguish between single and multiple-source scenarios for generating the primordial density perturbation, and more generally to probe the details of inflationary physics., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures; v2: Minor changes and references added. We propose a novel scenario to generate primordial magnetic fields during inflation induced by an oscillating coupling of the electromagnetic field to the inflaton. This resonant mechanism has two key advantages over previous proposals. First of all, it generates a narrow band of magnetic fields at any required wavelength, thereby allaying the usual problem of a strongly blue spectrum and its associated backreaction. Secondly, it avoids the need for a strong coupling as the coupling is oscillating rather than growing or decaying exponentially. Despite these major advantages, we find that the backreaction is still far too large during inflation if the generated magnetic fields are required to have a strength of order 10^{-15} Gauss today on observationally interesting scales. We investigate the signature of primordial non-Gaussianities in the weak lensing bispectrum, in particular the signals generated by local, orthogonal and equilateral non-Gaussianities. The questions we address include the signal-to-noise ratio generated in the Euclid weak lensing survey (we find the 1sigma-errors for fNL are 200, 575 and 1628 for local, orthogonal and equilateral non-Gaussianities, respectively), misestimations of fNL if one chooses the wrong non-Gaussianity model (misestimations by up to a factor of +/-3 in fNL are possible, depending on the choice of the model), the probability of noticing such a mistake (improbably large values for the chi^2-functional occur from fNL 200 on), degeneracies of the primordial bispectrum with other cosmological parameters (only the matter density Omega_m plays a significant role), and the subtraction of the much larger, structure-formation generated bispectrum. If a prior on a standard wCDM-parameter set is available from Euclid and Planck, the structure formation bispectrum can be predicted accurately enough for subtraction, and any residual structure formation bispectrum would influence the estimation of fNL to a minor degree. Configuration-space integrations which appear in the evaluation of chi^2-functionals and related quantities can be carried out very efficiently with Monte-Carlo techniques, which reduce the complexity by a factor of O(10^4) while delivering sub-percent accuracies. Weak lensing probes smaller scales than the CMB and hence provide an additional constraint on non-Gaussianities, even though they are not as sensitive to primordial non-Gaussianities as the CMB., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the scale-dependence of f_NL in the self-interacting curvaton model. We show that the scale-dependence, encoded in the spectral index n_{f_NL}, can be observable by future cosmic microwave background observations, such as CMBpol, in a significant part of the parameter space of the model. We point out that together with information about the trispectrum g_NL, the self-interacting curvaton model parameters could be completely fixed by observations. We calculate the scale dependence of the bispectrum and trispectrum in (quasi) local models of non-Gaussian primordial density perturbations, and characterize this scale dependence in terms of new observable parameters. They can help to discriminate between models of inflation, since they are sensitive to properties of the inflationary physics that are not probed by the standard observables. We find consistency relations between these parameters in certain classes of models. We apply our results to a scenario of modulated reheating, showing that the scale dependence of non-Gaussianity can be significant. We also discuss the scale dependence of the bispectrum and trispectrum, in cases where one varies the shape as well as the overall scale of the figure under consideration. We describe a simple way of incorporating fluctuations of the Hubble scale during the horizon exit of scalar perturbations into the delta N formalism. The dominant effect comes from the dependence of the Hubble scale on low-frequency modes of the inflaton. This modifies the coefficient of the log-enhanced term appearing in the curvature spectrum at second order in field fluctuations. With this modification, the relevant coefficient turns out to be proportional to the second derivative of the tree-level spectrum with respect to the inflaton phi at horizon exit. A logarithm with precisely the same coefficient appears in a calculation of the log-enhancement of the curvature spectrum based purely on the geometry of the reheating surface. We take this agreement as strong support for the proposed implementation of the delta N formalism. Moreover, our analysis makes it apparent that the log-enhancement of the inflationary power-spectrum is indeed physical if this quantity is defined using a global coordinate system on the reheating surface (or any other post-inflationary surface of constant energy density). We outline the expected constraints on non-Gaussianity from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with current and future experiments, focusing on both the third (f_{NL}) and fourth-order (g_{NL} and \tau_{NL}) amplitudes of the local configuration or non-Gaussianity. The experimental focus is the skewness (two-to-one) and kurtosis (two-to-two and three-to-one) power spectra from weighted maps. In adition to a measurement of \tau_{NL} and g_{NL} with WMAP 5-year data, our study provides the first forecasts for future constraints on g_{NL}. We describe how these statistics can be corrected for the mask and cut-sky through a window function, bypassing the need to compute linear terms that were introduced for the previous-generation non-Gaussianity statistics, such as the skewness estimator. We discus the ratio A_{NL} = \tau_{NL}/(6f_{NL}/5)^2 as an additional test of single-field inflationary models and discuss the physical significance of each statistic. Using these estimators with WMAP 5-Year V+W-band data out to l_{max}=600 we constrain the cubic order non-Gaussianity parameters \tau_{NL}, and g_{NL} and find -7.4 < g_{NL}/10^5 < 8.2 and -0.6 < \tau_{NL}/10^4 < 3.3 improving the previous COBE-based limit on \tau_{NL} < 10^8 nearly four orders of magnitude with WMAP., Comment: 15 pages. 14 figures

In this paper we analyse three models of the early universe, for which the respective mechanisms for generating the curvature perturbation are considered disparate. We find that in fact the mechanisms are very similar, and hence explain why they give rise to a large non-gaussianity. We show that the mechanism for generating the primordial curvature perturbation, and hence the observable non-gaussianity, is similar in both the Curvaton and Modulated Reheating models. In both cases the model can be written in terms of an energy transfer between the constituting fluids. We then show that this is also true for the mechanism of generating the curvature perturbation by symmetry breaking the end of inflation. We then relate this to the non-gaussian contribution to the curvature perturbation and find that it is inversely proportional to the efficiency with which the curvature perturbation is transferred between the fluids. We consider possible scale-dependence of the non-linearity parameter f_NL in local and quasi-local models of non-Gaussian primordial density perturbations. In the simplest model where the primordial perturbations are a quadratic local function of a single Gaussian field then f_NL is scale-independent by construction. However scale-dependence can arise due to either a local function of more than one Gaussian field, or due to non-linear evolution of modes after horizon-exit during inflation. We show that the scale dependence of f_NL is typically first order in slow-roll. We study the non-Gaussianity generated during multiple-field inflation. We provide an exact expression for the bispectrum parameter f_NL which is valid beyond the slow-roll regime, valid for certain classes of inflationary models. We then study a new, exact multi-field inflationary model considering a case where the bispectrum grows to observable values at the end of inflation.
