We explore the effect of neutron lifetime and its uncertainty on standard big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). BBN describes the cosmic production of the light nuclides $^1{\rm H}$, ${\rm D}$, $^3{\rm H}$+$^3{\rm He}$, $^4{\rm He}$, and $^7{\rm Li}$+$^7{\rm Be}$ in the first minutes of cosmic time. The neutron mean life $\tau_n$ has two roles in modern BBN calculations: (1) it normalizes the matrix element for weak $n \leftrightarrow p$ interconversions, and (2) it sets the rate of free neutron decay after the weak interactions freeze out. We review the history of the interplay between $\tau_n$ measurements and BBN, and present a study of the sensitivity of the light element abundances to the modern neutron lifetime measurements. We find that $\tau_n$ uncertainties dominate the predicted $^4{\rm He}$ error budget, but these theory errors remain smaller than the uncertainties in $^4{\rm He}$ observations, even with the dispersion in recent neutron lifetime measurements. For the other light-element predictions, $\tau_n$ contributes negligibly to their error budget. Turning the problem around, we combine present BBN and cosmic microwave background (CMB) determinations of the cosmic baryon density to $\textit{predict}$ a "cosmologically preferred" mean life of $\tau_{n}({\rm BBN+CMB}) = 870 \pm 16 \ \rm sec$, which is consistent with experimental mean life determinations. We go on to show that if future astronomical and cosmological helium observations can reach an uncertainty of $\sigma_{\rm obs}(Y_p) = 0.001$ in the $^4{\rm He}$ mass fraction $Y_p$, this could begin to discriminate between the mean life determinations., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures

We present new Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) limits on the cosmic expansion rate or relativistic energy density, quantified via the number $N_\nu$ of equivalent neutrino species. We use the latest light element observations, neutron mean lifetime, and update our evaluation for the nuclear rates $d+d \rightarrow He3 + n$ and $d+d \rightarrow H3 + p$. Combining this result with the independent constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) yields tight limits on new physics that perturbs $N_\nu$ and $\eta$ prior to cosmic nucleosynthesis: a joint BBN+CMB analysis gives $N_\nu = 2.898 \pm 0.141$, resulting in $N_\nu < 3.180$ at $2\sigma$. We apply these limits to a wide variety of new physics scenarios including right-handed neutrinos, dark radiation, and a stochastic gravitational wave background. We also search for limits on potential {\em changes} in $N_\nu$ and/or the baryon-to-photon ratio $\eta$ between the two epochs. The present data place strong constraints on the allowed changes in $N_\nu$ between BBN and CMB decoupling; for example, we find $-0.708 < N_\nu^{\rm CMB}-N_\nu^{\rm BBN} < 0.328$ in the case where $\eta$ and the primordial helium mass fraction $Y_p$ are unchanged between the two epochs; we also give limits on the allowed variations in $\eta$ or in $(\eta,N_\nu)$ jointly. Looking to the future, we forecast the tightened precision for $N_\nu$ arising from both CMB Stage 4 measurements as well as improvements in astronomical \he4 measurements. We find that CMB-S4 combined with present BBN and light element observation precision can give $\sigma(N_\nu) \simeq 0.03$. Such future precision would reveal the expected effect of neutrino heating ($N_{\rm eff}-3=0.044$) of the CMB during BBN, and would be near the level to reveal any particle species ever in thermal equilibrium with the standard model., Comment: 40 pages, 12 figures

The primordial Lithium Problem is intimately connected to the assumption that ${}^{7}{\rm Li}$ observed in metal-poor halo stars retains its primordial abundance, which lies significantly below the predictions of standard big-bang nucleosynthesis. Two key lines of evidence have argued that these stars have not significantly depleted their initial ${}^{7}{\rm Li}$: i) the lack of dispersion in Li abundances measured at low metallicity; and ii) the detection of the more fragile ${}^{6}{\rm Li}$ isotope in at least two halo stars. The purported ${}^{6}{\rm Li}$ detections were in good agreement with predictions from cosmic-ray nucleosynthesis which is responsible for the origin of ${}^{6}{\rm Li}$. This concordance left little room for depletion of ${}^{6}{\rm Li}$ depletion, and implied that the more robust ${}^{7}{\rm Li}$ largely evaded destruction. Recent (re)-observations of halo stars challenge the evidence against ${}^{7}{\rm Li}$ depletion: i) lithium abundances now show significant dispersion, and ii) sensitive ${}^{6}{\rm Li}$ searches now reveal only firm upper limits to the ${}^{6}{\rm Li}/{}^{7}{\rm Li}$ ratio. The tight new ${}^{6}{\rm Li}$ upper limits generally fall far below the predictions of cosmic-ray nucleosynthesis, implying that substantial ${}^{6}{\rm Li}$ depletion has occurred--by factors up to 50. We show that in stars with ${}^{6}{\rm Li}$ limits and thus lower bounds on ${}^{6}{\rm Li}$ depletion, an equal amount of ${}^{7}{\rm Li}$ depletion is more than sufficient to resolve the primordial ${}^{7}{\rm Li}$ Problem. This picture is consistent with stellar models in which ${}^{7}{\rm Li}$ is less depleted than ${}^{6}{\rm Li}$, and strengthen the case that the Lithium Problem has an astrophysical solution. We consider the effect on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) of new measurements of the $d(p,\gamma){}^3$He cross section by the LUNA Collaboration. These have an important effect on the primordial abundance of D/H which is also sensitive to the baryon density at the time of BBN. We have re-evaluated the thermal rate for this reaction, using a world average of cross section data, which we describe with model-independent polynomials; our results are in good agreement with a similar analysis by LUNA. We then perform a full likelihood analysis combining BBN and Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) likelihood chains using the new rate combined with previous measurements and compare with the results using previous rates. Concordance between BBN and CMB measurements of the anisotropy spectrum using the old rates was excellent. The predicted deuterium abundance at the Planck value of the baryon density was $({\rm D/H})_{\rm BBN+CMB}^{\rm old} = (2.57 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}$ which can be compared with the value determined from quasar absorption systems $({\rm D/H})_{\rm obs} = (2.55 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{-5} $. Using the new rates we find $({\rm D/H})_{\rm BBN+CMB} = (2.51 \pm 0.11) \times 10^{-5}$. We thus find consistency among BBN theory, deuterium and ${}^4$He observations, and the CMB, when using reaction rates fit in our data-driven approach. We also find that the new reaction data tightens the constraints on the number of relativistic degrees of freedom during BBN, giving the effective number of light neutrino species $N_\nu = 2.880 \pm 0.144$ in good agreement with the Standard Model of particle physics. Finally, we note that the observed deuterium abundance continues to be more precise than the BBN+CMB prediction, whose error budget is now dominated by $d(d,n){}^3$He and $d(d,p){}^{3}{\rm H}$., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures. We assess the status of big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) in light of the final Planck data release and other recent developments, and in anticipation of future measurements. Planck data fix the cosmic baryon density to 0.9% precision, and determine the helium abundance and effective number of neutrinos with precision approaching that of astronomical and BBN determinations respectively. In addition, new high-redshift measurements give D/H to better precision than theoretical predictions, and new Li/H data reconfirm the lithium problem. We present new ${}^{7}{\rm Be}(n,p){}^{7}{\rm Li}$ rates using new neutron capture measurements; we have also examined the effect of proposed changes in the $d(p,\gamma){}^{3}{\rm He}$ rates. Using these results we perform a series of likelihood analyses. We assess BBN/CMB consistency, with attention to how our results depend on the choice of Planck data, as well as how the results depend on the choice of non-BBN, non-Planck data sets. Most importantly the lithium problem remains, and indeed is more acute given the very tight D/H observational constraints; new neutron capture data reveals systematics that somewhat increases uncertainty and thus slightly reduces but does not essentially change the problem. We confirm that $d(p,\gamma){}^{3}{\rm He}$ theoretical rates brings D/H out of agreement and slightly increases 7Li; new experimental data are needed at BBN energies. Setting the lithium problem aside, we find the effective number of neutrino species at BBN is $N_\nu = 2.86 \pm 0.15$. Future CMB Stage-4 measurements promise substantial improvements in BBN parameters: helium abundance determinations will be competitive with the best astronomical determinations, and $N_{\rm eff}$ will approach sensitivities capable of detecting the effects of Standard Model neutrino heating of the primordial plasma. Big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) describes the production of the lightest nuclides via a dynamic interplay among the four fundamental forces during the first seconds of cosmic time. We briefly overview the essentials of this physics, and present new calculations of light element abundances through li6 and li7, with updated nuclear reactions and uncertainties including those in the neutron lifetime. We provide fits to these results as a function of baryon density and of the number of neutrino flavors, N_nu. We review recent developments in BBN, particularly new, precision Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements that now probe the baryon density, helium content, and the effective number of degrees of freedom, n_eff. These measurements allow for a tight test of BBN and of cosmology using CMB data alone. Our likelihood analysis convolves the 2015 Planck data chains with our BBN output and observational data. Adding astronomical measurements of light elements strengthens the power of BBN. We include a new determination of the primordial helium abundance in our likelihood analysis. New D/H observations are now more precise than the corresponding theoretical predictions, and are consistent with the Standard Model and the Planck baryon density. Moreover, D/H now provides a tight measurement of N_nu when combined with the CMB baryon density, and provides a 2sigma upper limit N_nu < 3.2. The new precision of the CMB and of D/H observations together leave D/H predictions as the largest source of uncertainties. Future improvement in BBN calculations will therefore rely on improved nuclear cross section data. A critical review is given of the current status of cosmological nucleosynthesis. In the framework of the Standard Model with 3 types of relativistic neutrinos, the baryon-to-photon ratio, $\eta$, corresponding to the inferred primordial abundances of deuterium and helium-4 is consistent with the independent determination of $\eta$ from observations of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background. However the primordial abundance of lithium-7 inferred from observations is significantly below its expected value. Taking systematic uncertainties in the abundance estimates into account, there is overall concordance in the range $\eta = (5.7-6.7)\times 10^{-10}$ at 95% CL (corresponding to a cosmological baryon density $\Omega_B h^2 = 0.021 - 0.025$). The D and He-4 abundances, when combined with the CMB determination of $\eta$, provide the bound $N_\nu=3.28 \pm 0.28$ on the effective number of neutrino species. We studied previously the impact on light-element abundances of gravitinos decaying during or after Big-Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). We found regions of the gravitino mass m_{3/2} and abundance zeta_{3/2} plane where its decays could reconcile the calculated abundance of Li7 with observation without perturbing the other light-element abundances unacceptably. Here we revisit this issue in light of LHC measurements of the Higgs mass and constraints on supersymmetric model parameters, as well as updates in the astrophysical measurements of light-element abundances. In addition to the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking masses at the GUT scale (the CMSSM) studied previously, we also study models with universality imposed below the GUT scale and models with non-universal Higgs masses (NUHM1). We calculate the total likelihood function for the light-element abundances, taking into account the observational uncertainties. We find that gravitino decays provide a robust solution to the cosmological Li7 problem along strips in the (m_{3/2}, zeta_{3/2}) plane along which the abundances of deuterium, He4 and Li7 may be fit with chi^2_min < 3, compared with chi^2 ~ 34 if the effects of gravitino decays are unimportant. The minimum of the likelihood function is reduced to chi^2 < 2 when the uncertainty on D/H is relaxed and < 1 when the lithium abundance is taken from globular cluster data., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures; added a new table and a discussion paragraph for it in Section 4, matches the published version

We consider the effects of metastable charged sparticles on Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), including bound-state reaction rates and chemical effects. We make a new analysis of the bound states of negatively-charged massive particles with the light nuclei most prominent in BBN, and present a new code to track their abundances, paying particular attention to that of Li7. Assuming, as an example, that the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), and that the lighter stau slepton, stau_1, is the metastable next-to-lightest sparticle within the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (CMSSM), we analyze the possible effects on the standard BBN abundances of stau_1 bound states and decays for representative values of the gravitino mass. Taking into account the constraint on the CMSSM parameter space imposed by the discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC, we delineate regions in which the fit to the measured light-element abundances is as good as in standard BBN. We also identify regions of the CMSSM parameter space in which the bound state properties, chemistry and decays of metastable charged sparticles can solve the cosmological Li7 problem., Comment: 49 pages, 29 eps figures

The primordial abundances of light elements produced in the standard theory of Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) depend only on the cosmic ratio of baryons to photons, a quantity inferred from observations of the microwave background. The predicted primordial 7Li abundance is four times that measured in the atmospheres of Galactic halo stars. This discrepancy could be caused by modification of surface lithium abundances during the stars' lifetimes or by physics beyond the Standard Model that affects early nucleosynthesis. The lithium abundance of low-metallicity gas provides an alternative constraint on the primordial abundance and cosmic evolution of lithium that is not susceptible to the in situ modifications that may affect stellar atmospheres. Here we report observations of interstellar 7Li in the low-metallicity gas of the Small Magellanic Cloud, a nearby galaxy with a quarter the Sun's metallicity. The present-day 7Li abundance of the Small Magellanic Cloud is nearly equal to the BBN predictions, severely constraining the amount of possible subsequent enrichment of the gas by stellar and cosmic-ray nucleosynthesis. Our measurements can be reconciled with standard BBN with an extremely fine-tuned depletion of stellar Li with metallicity. Fermi has resolved several star-forming galaxies, but the vast majority of the star-forming universe is unresolved and thus contributes to the extragalactic gamma ray background (EGB). Here, we calculate the contribution from star-forming galaxies to the EGB in the Fermi range from 100 MeV to 100 GeV, due to inverse-Compton (IC) scattering of the interstellar photon field by cosmic-ray electrons. We first construct a one-zone model for a single star-forming galaxy, assuming supernovae power the acceleration of cosmic rays. The same IC interactions leading to gamma rays also substantially contribute to the energy loss of the high-energy cosmic-ray electrons. Consequently, a galaxy's IC emission is determined by the relative importance of IC losses in the cosmic-ray electron energy budget ("partial calorimetry"). We use our template for galactic IC luminosity to find the cosmological contribution of star-forming galaxies to the EGB. For all of our models, we find the IC EGB contribution is almost an order of magnitude less than the peak of the emission due to cosmic-ray ion interactions (mostly pionic p_cr p_ism \rightarrow \pi_0 \rightarrow \gamma \gamma); even at the highest Fermi energies, IC is subdominant. Moreover, the flatter IC spectrum increases the high-energy signal of the pionic+IC sum, bringing it into better agreement with the EGB spectral index observed by Fermi . Partial calorimetry ensures that the overall IC signal is well constrained, with only modest uncertainties in the amplitude and spectral shape for plausible model choices. Partial calorimetry of cosmic-ray electrons should hold true in both normal and starburst galaxies, and thus we include starbursts in our calculation. The origin of the diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB) has been intensively studied but remains unsettled. Current popular source candidates include unresolved star-forming galaxies, starburst galaxies, and blazars. In this paper we calculate the EGB contribution from the interactions of cosmic rays accelerated by Type Ia supernovae (SNe), extending earlier work which only included core-collapse SNe. We consider Type Ia events in star-forming galaxies, but also in quiescent galaxies that lack star formation. For star-forming galaxies, consistently including Type Ia events makes little change to the star-forming EGB prediction, so long as both SN types have the same cosmic-ray acceleration efficiencies in star-forming galaxies. Thus, our updated EGB estimate continues to show that star-forming galaxies can represent a substantial portion of the signal measured by Fermi. For quiescent galaxies, conversely, we find a wide range of possibilities for the EGB contribution. The dominant uncertainty we investigated comes from the mass in hot gas, which provides targets for cosmic rays; total gas masses are as yet poorly known, particularly at larger radii. Additionally, the EGB estimation is very sensitive to the cosmic-ray acceleration efficiency and confinement, especially in quiescent galaxies. In the most optimistic allowed scenarios, quiescent galaxies can be an important source of the EGB. In this case, star-forming galaxies and quiescent galaxies together will dominate the EGB and leave little room for other contributions. If other sources, such as blazars, are found to have important contributions to the EGB, then either the gas mass or cosmic-ray content of quiescent galaxies must be significantly lower than in their star-forming counterparts. Radio properties of supernova outbursts remain poorly understood despite longstanding campaigns following events discovered at other wavelengths. After ~ 30 years of observations, only ~ 50 supernovae have been detected at radio wavelengths, none of which are Type Ia. Even the most radio-loud events are ~ 10^4 fainter in the radio than in the optical; to date, such intrinsically dim objects have only been visible in the very local universe. The detection and study of radio supernovae (RSNe) will be fundamentally altered and dramatically improved as the next generation of radio telescopes comes online, including EVLA, ASKAP, and MeerKAT, and culminating in the Square Kilometer Array (SKA); the latter should be > 50 times more sensitive than present facilities. SKA can repeatedly scan large (> 1 deg^2) areas of the sky, and thus will discover RSNe and other transient sources in a new, automatic, untargeted, and unbiased way. We estimate SKA will be able to detect core-collapse RSNe out to redshift z ~ 5, with an all-redshift rate ~ 620 events yr^-1 deg^-2, assuming a survey sensitivity of 50 nJy and radio lightcurves like those of SN 1993J. Hence SKA should provide a complete core-collapse RSN sample that is sufficient for statistical studies of radio properties of core-collapse supernovae. EVLA should find ~ 160 events yr^-1 deg^-2 out to redshift z ~ 3, and other SKA precursors should have similar detection rates. We also provided recommendations of the survey strategy to maximize the RSN detections of SKA. This new radio core-collapse supernovae sample will complement the detections from the optical searches, such as the LSST, and together provide crucial information on massive star evolution, supernova physics, and the circumstellar medium, out to high redshift. We have conducted Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) observations of LiH, in absorption, toward three quasars. These quasars, B0218+357, PKS1830-211, and PKS0201+113, have redshifts of z = 0.685 - 3.387$, and shift the LiH J=1-0 transition to the 1 mm and 3mm wavelength bands, where atmospheric absorption is sharply reduced from that predominating near the rest frequency of 443 GHz. We report a 3$\sigma$ detection of LiH toward B0218+357 with a column density of 1.4x10^{12} cm^{-2} and place an upper limit on the ^6Li/^7Li ratio of <0.16. We explore the consequences of an early population of intermediate mass stars in the 2 - 8 M\odot range on cosmic chemical evolution. We discuss the implications of this population as it pertains to several cosmological and astrophysical observables. For example, some very metal-poor galactic stars show large enhancements of carbon, typical of the C-rich ejecta of low-mass stars but not of supernovae; moreover, halo star carbon and oxygen abundances show wide scatter, which imply a wide range of star-formation and nucleosynthetic histories contributed to the first generations of stars. Also, recent analyses of the 4He abundance in metal-poor extragalactic H II regions suggest an elevated abundance Yp \simeq 0.256 by mass, higher than the predicted result from big bang nucleosynthesis assuming the baryon density determined by WMAP, Yp = 0.249. Although there are large uncertainties in the observational determination of 4He, this offset may suggest a prompt initial enrichment of 4He in early metal-poor structures. We also discuss the effect of intermediate mass stars on global cosmic evolution, the reionization of the Universe, the density of white dwarfs, as well as SNII and SNIa rates at high redshift. We also comment on the early astration of D and 7Li. We conclude that if intermediate mass stars are to be associated with Population III stars, their relevance is limited (primarily from observed abundance patterns) to low mass structures involving a limited fraction of the total baryon content of the Universe., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Large synoptic (repeated scan) imaging sky surveys are poised to observe enormous numbers of core-collapse supernovae. We quantify the discovery potential of upcoming projects, including DES, Pan-STARRS, and LSST. These surveys will map out the cosmic core-collapse supernova redshift distribution via direct counting, with very small statistical uncertainties out to a redshift depth which is a strong function of the survey limiting magnitude. This supernova redshift history encodes rich information about cosmology, star formation, and supernova astrophysics and phenomenology; the large statistics of the supernova sample will be crucial to disentangle possible degeneracies among these issues. For example, the cosmic supernova rate can be measured to high precision out to z ~ 0.5 for all core-collapse types, and out to redshift z ~ 1 for Type IIn events. Because of the tight link between supernovae and star formation, synoptic sky surveys will provide precision measurements of the normalization and z < 1 history of cosmic star-formation rate in a manner independent of and complementary to current methods. Furthermore, Type II supernovae can serve as distance indicators and would independently cross-check Type Ia distances measured in the same surveys. Arguably the largest and least-controlled uncertainty in these efforts comes from dust obscuration of supernovae in their host galaxies; we outline a strategy to determine empirically the obscuration properties by leveraging the large supernova samples over a broad range of redshift.
