We compute synthetic optical and ultraviolet (UV) emission-line properties of galaxies in a full cosmological framework by coupling, in post-processing, new-generation nebular-emission models with high-resolution, cosmological zoom-in simulations of massive galaxies. Our self-consistent modelling accounts for nebular emission from young stars and accreting black holes (BHs). We investigate which optical- and UV-line diagnostic diagrams can best help to discern between the main ionizing sources, as traced by the ratio of BH accretion to star formation rates in model galaxies, over a wide range of redshifts. At low redshift, simulated star-forming galaxies, galaxies dominated by active galactic nuclei and composite galaxies are appropriately differentiated by standard selection criteria in the classical [OIII]$\lambda$5007/H$\beta$ versus [NII]$\lambda$6584/H$\alpha$ diagram. At redshifts $z \gt 1$, however, this optical diagram fails to discriminate between active and inactive galaxies at metallicities below $0.5\ Z_\odot$. To robustly classify the ionizing radiation of such metal-poor galaxies, which dominate in the early Universe, we confirm 3 previous, and propose 11 novel diagnostic diagrams based on equivalent widths and luminosity ratios of UV emission lines, such as EW(OIII]$\lambda$1663) versus OIII]$\lambda$1663/HeII$\lambda$1640, CIII]$\lambda$1908/HeII$\lambda$1640 versus OIII]$\lambda$1663/HeII$\lambda$1640, and CIV$\lambda$1550/CIII]$\lambda$1908 versus CIII]$\lambda$1908/CII$\lambda$2326. We formulate associated UV selection criteria and discuss some caveats of our results (e.g., uncertainties in the modelling of the HeII$\lambda$1640 line). Galaxies occupy different regions of the [OIII]$\lambda5007$/H$\beta$-versus-[NII]$\lambda6584$/H$\alpha$ emission-line ratio diagram in the distant and local Universe. We investigate the origin of this intriguing result by modelling self-consistently, for the first time, nebular emission from young stars, accreting black holes (BHs) and older, post-asymptotic-giant-branch (post-AGB) stellar populations in galaxy formation simulations in a full cosmological context. In post-processing, we couple new-generation nebular-emission models with high-resolution, cosmological zoom-in simulations of massive galaxies to explore which galaxy physical properties drive the cosmic evolution of the optical-line ratios [OIII]$\lambda5007$/H$\beta$, [NII]$\lambda6584$/H$\alpha$, [SII]$\lambda\lambda6717,6731$/H$\alpha$ and [OI]$\lambda6300$/H$\alpha$. The line ratios of simulated galaxies agree well with observations of both star-forming and active local SDSS galaxies. Towards higher redshifts, at fixed galaxy stellar mass, the average [OIII]/H$\beta$ increases and [NII]/H$\alpha$, [SII]/H$\alpha$ and [OI]/H$\alpha$ decrease -- widely consistent with observations. At fixed stellar mass, we identify star formation history, which controls nebular emission from young stars via the ionization parameter, as the primary driver of the cosmic evolution of [OIII]/H$\beta$ and [NII]/H$\alpha$. For [SII]/H$\alpha$ and [OI]/H$\alpha$, this applies only to redshifts above $z=1.5$, the evolution at lower redshift being driven in roughly equal parts by nebular emission from AGN and post-AGB stars. Instead, changes in the hardness of ionizing radiation, ionized-gas density, the prevalence of BH accretion relative to star formation and the dust-to-metal mass ratio (whose impact on the gas-phase N/O ratio we model at fixed O/H) play at most a minor role in the cosmic evolution of simulated galaxy line ratios., Comment: 31 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present evidence from cosmological hydrodynamical simulations for a co-evolution of the slope of the total (dark and stellar) mass density profile, gamma_tot, and the dark matter fraction within the half-mass radius, f_DM, in early-type galaxies. The relation can be described as gamma_tot = A f_DM + B for all systems at all redshifts. The trend is set by the decreasing importance of gas dissipation towards lower redshifts and for more massive systems. Early-type galaxies are smaller, more concentrated, have lower f_DM and steeper gamma_tot at high redshifts and at lower masses for a given redshift; f_DM and gamma_tot are good indicators for growth by "dry" merging. The values for A and B change distinctively for different feedback models, and this relation can be used as a test for such models. A similar correlation exists between gamma_tot and the stellar mass surface density Sigma_*. A model with weak stellar feedback and feedback from black holes is in best agreement with observations. All simulations, independent of the assumed feedback model, predict steeper gamma_tot and lower f_DM at higher redshifts. While the latter is in agreement with the observed trends, the former is in conflict with lensing observations, which indicate constant or decreasing gamma_tot. We present measurements of the [NII]/Ha ratio as a probe of gas-phase oxygen abundance for a sample of 419 star-forming galaxies at z=0.6-2.7 from the KMOS3D near-IR multi-IFU survey. The mass-metallicity relation (MZR) is determined consistently with the same sample selection, metallicity tracer, and methodology over the wide redshift range probed by the survey. We find good agreement with long-slit surveys in the literature, except for the low-mass slope of the relation at z~2.3, where this sample is less biased than previous samples based on optical spectroscopic redshifts. In this regime we measure a steeper slope than some literature results. Excluding the AGN contribution from the MZR reduces sensitivity at the high mass end, but produces otherwise consistent results. There is no significant dependence of the [NII]/Ha ratio on SFR or environment at fixed redshift and stellar mass. The IFU data allow spatially resolved measurements of [NII]/Ha, from which we can infer abundance gradients for 180 galaxies, thus tripling the current sample in the literature. The observed gradients are on average flat, with only 15 gradients statistically offset from zero at >3sigma. We have modelled the effect of beam-smearing, assuming a smooth intrinsic radial gradient and known seeing, inclination and effective radius for each galaxy. Our seeing-limited observations can recover up to 70% of the intrinsic gradient for the largest, face-on disks, but only 30% for the smaller, more inclined galaxies. We do not find significant trends between observed or corrected gradients and any stellar population, dynamical or structural galaxy parameters, mostly in agreement with existing studies with much smaller sample sizes. We investigate the evolution of stellar population gradients from $z=2$ to $z=0$ in massive galaxies at large radii ($r > 2R_{\mathrm{eff}}$) using ten cosmological zoom simulations of halos with $6 \times 10^{12} M_{\odot} < M_{\mathrm{halo}} < 2 \times 10^{13}M_{\odot}$. The simulations follow metal cooling and enrichment from SNII, SNIa and AGB winds. We explore the differential impact of an empirical model for galactic winds that reproduces the mass-metallicity relation and its evolution with redshift. At larger radii the galaxies, for both models, become more dominated by stars accreted from satellite galaxies in major and minor mergers. In the wind model, fewer stars are accreted, but they are significantly more metal poor resulting in steep global metallicity ($\langle \nabla Z_{\mathrm{stars}} \rangle= -0.35$ dex/dex) and color (e.g. $\langle \nabla g-r \rangle = -0.13$ dex/dex) gradients in agreement with observations. In contrast, colour and metallicity gradients of the models without winds are inconsistent with observations. Age gradients are in general mildly positive at $z=0$ ($\langle \nabla Age_{\mathrm{stars}} \rangle= 0.04$ dex/dex) with significant differences between the models at higher redshift. We demonstrate that for the wind model, stellar accretion is steepening existing in-situ metallicity gradients by about 0.2 dex by the present day and helps to match observed gradients of massive early-type galaxies at large radii. Colour and metallicity gradients are significantly steeper for systems which have accreted stars in minor mergers, while galaxies with major mergers have relatively flat gradients, confirming previous results. We present the correlations between stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR) and [NII]/Ha flux ratio as indicator of gas-phase metallicity for a sample of 222 galaxies at 0.8 < z < 2.6 and log(M*/Msun)=9.0-11.5 from the LUCI, SINS/zC-SINF and KMOS3D surveys. This sample provides a unique analysis of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) over an extended redshift range using consistent data analysis techniques and strong-line metallicity indicator. We find a constant slope at the low-mass end of the relation and can fully describe its redshift evolution through the evolution of the characteristic turnover mass where the relation begins to flatten at the asymptotic metallicity. At fixed mass and redshift, our data do not show a correlation between the [NII]/Ha ratio and SFR, which disagrees with the 0.2-0.3dex offset in [NII]/Ha predicted by the "fundamental relation" between stellar mass, SFR and metallicity discussed in recent literature. We analyze the formation histories of 19 galaxies from cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics zoom-in resimulations. We construct mock three-colour images and show that the models reproduce observed trends in the evolution of galaxy colours and morphologies. However, only a small fraction of galaxies contains bars. Many galaxies go through phases of central mass growth by in-situ star formation driven by gas-rich mergers or misaligned gas infall. These events lead to accretion of low-angular momentum gas to the centres and leave imprints on the distributions of z=0 stellar circularities, radii and metallicities as functions of age. Observations of the evolution of structural properties of samples of disc galaxies at z=2.5-0.0 infer continuous mass assembly at all radii. Our simulations can only explain this if there is a significant contribution from mergers or misaligned infall, as expected in a LambdaCDM universe. Quiescent merger histories lead to high kinematic disc fractions and inside-out growth, but show little central growth after the last `destructive' merger at z>1.5. For sufficiently strong feedback, as assumed in our models, a moderate amount of merging does not seem to be a problem for the z=0 disc galaxy population, but may rather be a requirement. The average profiles of simulated disc galaxies agree with observations at z>=1.5. At z<=1, there is too much growth in size and too little growth in central mass, possibly due to the under-abundance of bars. We employ cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the effects of AGN feedback on the formation of massive galaxies with present-day stellar masses of $M_{stel} = 8.8 \times 10^{10} - 6.0 \times 10^{11} M_{sun}$. Using smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations with a pressure-entropy formulation that allows an improved treatment of contact discontinuities and fluid mixing, we run three sets of simulations of 20 halos with different AGN feedback models: (1) no feedback, (2) thermal feedback, and (3) mechanical and radiation feedback. We assume that seed black holes are present at early cosmic epochs at the centre of emerging dark matter halos and trace their mass growth via gas accretion and mergers with other black holes. Both feedback models successfully recover the observed M_BH - sigma relation and black hole-to-stellar mass ratio for simulated central early-type galaxies. The baryonic conversion efficiencies are reduced by a factor of two compared to models without any AGN feedback at all halo masses. However, massive galaxies simulated with thermal AGN feedback show a factor of ~10-100 higher X-ray luminosities than observed. The mechanical/radiation feedback model reproduces the observed correlation between X-ray luminosities and velocity dispersion, e.g. for galaxies with sigma = 200 km/s, the X-ray luminosity is reduced from $10^{42}$ erg/s to $10^{40}$ erg/s. It also efficiently suppresses late time star formation, reducing the specific star formation rate from $10^{-10.5}$ $yr^{-1}$ to $10^{-14}$ $yr^{-1}$ on average and resulting in quiescent galaxies since z=2, whereas the thermal feedback model shows higher late time in-situ star formation rates than observed., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for the publication in MNRAS

We present the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics implementation SPHGal, which combines some recently proposed improvements in GADGET. This includes a pressure-entropy formulation with a Wendland kernel, a higher order estimate of velocity gradients, a modified artificial viscosity switch with a modified strong limiter, and artificial conduction of thermal energy. With a series of idealized hydrodynamic tests we show that the pressure-entropy formulation is ideal for resolving fluid mixing at contact discontinuities but performs conspicuously worse at strong shocks due to the large entropy discontinuities. Including artificial conduction at shocks greatly improves the results. In simulations of Milky Way like disk galaxies a feedback-induced instability develops if too much artificial viscosity is introduced. Our modified artificial viscosity scheme prevents this instability and shows efficient shock capturing capability. We also investigate the star formation rate and the galactic outflow. The star formation rates vary slightly for different SPH schemes while the mass loading is sensitive to the SPH scheme and significantly reduced in our favored implementation. We compare the accretion behavior of the hot halo gas. The formation of cold blobs, an artifact of simple SPH implementations, can be eliminated efficiently with proper fluid mixing, either by conduction and/or by using a pressure-entropy formulation., Comment: Replaced with the version accepted by MNRAS

One quarter of all nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs) outside Virgo host a disc/ring of HI with size from a few to tens of kpc and mass up to ~1e+9 solar masses. Here we investigate whether this HI is related to the presence of a stellar disc within the host making use of the classification of ETGs in fast and slow rotators (FR/SR). We find a large diversity of HI masses and morphologies within both families. Surprisingly, SRs are detected as often, host as much HI and have a similar rate of HI discs/rings as FRs. Accretion of HI is therefore not always linked to the growth of an inner stellar disc. The weak relation between HI and stellar disc is confirmed by their frequent kinematical misalignment in FRs, including cases of polar and counterrotating gas. In SRs the HI is usually polar. This complex picture highlights a diversity of ETG formation histories which may be lost in the relative simplicity of their inner structure and emerges when studying their outer regions. We find that LCDM hydrodynamical simulations have difficulties reproducing the HI properties of ETGs. The gas discs formed in simulations are either too massive or too small depending on the star formation feedback implementation. Kinematical misalignments match the observations only qualitatively. The main point of conflict is that nearly all simulated FRs and a large fraction of all simulated SRs host corotating HI. We present new Spectrographic Areal Unit for Research on Optical Nebulae (SAURON) integral-field spectroscopy and Swift Ultraviolet Optical Telescope (UVOT) observations of molecular outflow host galaxy NGC 1266 that indicate NGC 1266 has experienced a rapid cessation of star formation. Both the SAURON maps of stellar population age and the Swift UVOT observations demonstrate the presence of young ($< 1$ Gyr) stellar populations within the central 1 kpc, while existing Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) CO(1--0) maps indicate that the sites of current star formation are constrained to the inner few hundred parsecs of the galaxy only. The optical spectrum of NGC 1266 from Moustakas & Kennicutt (2006) reveal a characteristic post-starburst (K+A) stellar population and Davis et al. (2012) confirm that ionized gas emission in the system originate from a shock. Galaxies with K+A spectra and shock-like ionized gas line ratios may comprise an important, overlooked segment of the post-starburst population, containing exactly those objects in which the AGN is actively expelling the star-forming material. While AGN activity is not the likely driver of the post-starburst event that occurred 500 Myr ago, the faint spiral structure seen in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide-field Camera 3 (WFC3) Y-, J- and H-band imaging seems to point to the possibility of gravitational torques being the culprit. If the molecular gas were driven into the center at the same time as the larger scale galaxy disk underwent quenching, the AGN might be able to sustain the presence of molecular gas for $\gtrsim 1$ Gyr by cyclically injecting turbulent kinetic energy into the dense molecular gas via a radio jet, inhibiting star formation., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

We present simulations of the magnetized interstellar medium (ISM) in models of massive star forming (40 Msun / yr) disk galaxies with high gas surface densities (~100 Msun / pc^2) similar to observed star forming high-redshift disks. We assume that type II supernovae deposit 10 per cent of their energy into the ISM as cosmic rays and neglect the additional deposition of thermal energy or momentum. With a typical Galactic diffusion coefficient for CRs (3e28 cm^2 / s) we demonstrate that this process alone can trigger the local formation of a strong low density galactic wind maintaining vertically open field lines. Driven by the additional pressure gradient of the relativistic fluid the wind speed can exceed 1000 km/s, much higher than the escape velocity of the galaxy. The global mass loading, i.e. the ratio of the gas mass leaving the galactic disk in a wind to the star formation rate becomes of order unity once the system has settled into an equilibrium. We conclude that relativistic particles accelerated in supernova remnants alone provide a natural and efficient mechanism to trigger winds similar to observed mass-loaded galactic winds in high-redshift galaxies. These winds also help explaining the low efficiencies for the conversion of gas into stars in galaxies as well as the early enrichment of the intergalactic medium with metals. We investigate the differential effects of metal cooling and galactic stellar winds on the cosmological formation of individual galaxies with three sets of cosmological, hydrodynamical zoom simulations of 45 halos in the mass range 10^111 and predict reasonable star formation histories, (ii) produce galaxies with high cold gas fractions (30-60 per cent) at high redshift, (iii) significantly reduce the galaxy formation efficiencies for halos (M_halo<10^12M_sun) at all redshifts in agreement with observational and abundance matching constraints, (iv) result in high-redshift galaxies with reduced circular velocities matching the observed Tully-Fisher relation at z~2, and (v) significantly increase the sizes of low-mass galaxies (M_stellar<3x10^10M_sun) at high redshift resulting in a weak size evolution - a trend in agreement with observations. However, the low redshift (z<0.5) star formation rates of massive galaxies are higher than observed (up to ten times). No tested model predicts the observed size evolution for low-mass and high-mass galaxies simultaneously. Due to the delayed onset of star formation in the wind models, the metal enrichment of gas and stars is delayed and agrees well with observational constraints. Metal cooling and stellar winds are both found to increase the ratio of in situ formed to accreted stars - the relative importance of dissipative vs. dissipationless assembly. For halo masses below ~10^12M_sun, this is mainly caused by less stellar accretion and compares well to predictions from semi-analytical models but still differs from abundance matching models. For higher masses, the fraction of in situ stars is over-predicted due to the unrealistically high star formation rates at low redshifts., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, and 1 table. We study the effect of AGN mechanical and radiation feedback on the formation of bulge dominated galaxies via mergers of disc galaxies. The merging galaxies have mass-ratios of 1:1 to 6:1 and include pre-existing hot gaseous halos to properly account for the global impact of AGN feedback. Using smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation code (GADGET-3) we compare three models with different AGN feedback models: (1) no black hole and no AGN feedback; (2) thermal AGN feedback; and (3) mechanical and radiative AGN feedback. The last model is motivated by observations of broad line quasars which show winds with initial velocities of $v_w \ge$ 10,000 km/s and also heating associated with the central AGN X-ray radiation. The primary changes in gas properties due to mechanical AGN feedback are lower thermal X-ray luminosity from the final galaxy - in better agreement with observations - and galactic outflows with higher velocity $\sim 1000$ km/s similar to recent direct observations of nearby merger remnants. The kinetic energy of the outflowing gas is a factor of $\sim$ 20 higher than in the thermal feedback case. All merger remnants with momentum-based AGN feedback with $v_w \sim 10,000$ km/s and $\epsilon_w=2 \times 10^{-3}$, independent of their progenitor mass-ratios, reproduce the observed relations between stellar velocity dispersion and black hole mass ($M_{\rm bh} - \sigma$) as well as X-ray luminosity ($L_X - \sigma$) with $10^{37.5}$ erg/s $\lesssim L_X (0.3-8~{\rm keV}) \lesssim 10^{39.2}$ erg/s for velocity dispersions in the range of 120 km/s $\lesssim \sigma \lesssim$ 190 km/s. In addition, the mechanical feedback produces a much greater AGN variability. We also show that gas is more rapidly and impulsively stripped from the galactic centres driving a moderate increase in galaxy size and decrease in central density with the mechanical AGN feedback model., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, resubmitted to MNRAS

[Abridged and Edited] We investigate nuclear light profiles in 135 ATLAS3D galaxies for which the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging is available and compare them to the large scale kinematics obtained with the SAURON integral-field spectrograph. Specific angular momentum, lambda_R, correlates with the shape of nuclear light profiles, where cores are typically found in slow rotators and core-less galaxies are fast rotators. Cores are found only in massive galaxies and only in systems with the stellar mass M>8x10^10 Msun. Based on our sample, we, however, see no evidence for a bimodal distribution of nuclear slopes. The best predictor for finding a core is based on the stellar velocity dispersion within an effective radius, sigma_e, and specific angular momentum, where cores are found for lambda_R<0.25 and sigma_e>160 km/s. We estimate that only about 10% of nearby early-type galaxies contain cores. Furthermore, we show that there is a genuine population of fast rotators with cores. We also show that core fast rotators are morphologically, kinematically and dynamically different from core slow rotators. The cores of fast rotators could harbour black holes of similar masses to those in core slow rotators, but typically more massive than those found in core-less fast rotators. Core-less galaxies, and especially core-less fast rotators, are under-luminous in the diffuse X-ray emission, but the presence of a core does not imply high X-ray luminosities. We postulate a possible population of core-less galaxies among slow rotators, which can not be explained as face-on discs, but comprise a genuine sub-population of slow rotators. These galaxies are typically less massive and flatter than core slow rotators, and show evidence for dynamical cold structures and exponential photometric components. Stellar bars are the most common non-axisymmetric structures in galaxies and their impact on the evolution of disc galaxies at all cosmological times can be significant. Classical theory predicts that stellar discs are stabilized against bar formation if embedded in massive spheroidal dark matter halos. However, dark matter halos have been shown to facilitate the growth of bars through resonant gravitational interaction. Still, it remains unclear why some galaxies are barred and some are not. In this study, we demonstrate that co-rotating (i.e., in the same sense as the disc rotating) dark matter halos with spin parameters in the range of $0 \le \lambda_{\mathrm{dm}} \le 0.07$ - which are a definite prediction of modern cosmological models - promote the formation of bars and boxy bulges and therefore can play an important role in the formation of pseudobulges in a kinematically hot dark matter dominated disc galaxies. We find continuous trends for models with higher halo spins: bars form more rapidly, the forming slow bars are stronger, and the final bars are longer. After 2 Gyrs of evolution, the amplitude of the bar mode in a model with $\lambda_{\mathrm{dm}} = 0.05$ is a factor of ~6 times higher, A_2/A_0 = 0.23, than in the non-rotating halo model. After 5 Gyrs, the bar is ~ 2.5 times longer. The origin of this trend is that more rapidly spinning (co-rotating) halos provide a larger fraction of trailing dark matter particles that lag behind the disc bar and help growing the bar by taking away its angular momentum by resonant interactions. A counter-rotating halo suppresses the formation of a bar in our models. We study the formation and evolution of Brightest Cluster Galaxies starting from a $z=2$ population of quiescent ellipticals and following them to $z=0$. To this end, we use a suite of nine high-resolution dark matter-only simulations of galaxy clusters in a $\Lambda$CDM universe. We develop a scheme in which simulation particles are weighted to generate realistic and dynamically stable stellar density profiles at $z=2$. Our initial conditions assign a stellar mass to every identified dark halo as expected from abundance matching; assuming there exists a one-to-one relation between the visible properties of galaxies and their host haloes. We set the sizes of the luminous components according to the observed relations for $z\sim2$ massive quiescent galaxies. We study the evolution of the mass-size relation, the fate of satellite galaxies and the mass aggregation of the cluster central. From $z=2$, these galaxies grow on average in size by a factor 5 to 10 of and in mass by 2 to 3. The stellar mass growth rate of the simulated BCGs in our sample is of 1.9 in the range $0.3

For early-type galaxies, the ability to sustain a corona of hot, X-ray emitting gas could have played a key role in quenching their star-formation history. Yet, it is still unclear what drives the precise amount of hot gas around these galaxies. By combining photometric and spectroscopic measurements for the early-type galaxies observed during the Atlas3D integral-field survey with measurements of their X-ray luminosity based on X-ray data of both low and high spatial resolution we conclude that the hot-gas content of early-type galaxies can depend on their dynamical structure. Specifically, whereas slow rotators generally have X-ray halos with luminosity L_X,gas and temperature T values that are in line with what is expected if the hot-gas emission is sustained by the thermalisaton of the kinetic energy carried by the stellar-mass loss material, fast rotators tend to display L_X,gas values that fall consistently below the prediction of this model, with similar T values that do not scale with the stellar kinetic energy as observed in the case of slow rotators. Considering that fast rotators are likely to be intrinsically flatter than slow rotators, and that the few L_X,gas-deficient slow rotators also happen to be relatively flat, the observed L_X,gas deficiency in these objects would support the hypothesis whereby flatter galaxies have a harder time in retaining their hot gas. We discuss the implications that a different hot-gas content could have on the fate of both acquired and internally-produced gaseous material, considering in particular how the L_X,gas deficiency of fast rotators would make them more capable to recycle the stellar-mass loss material into new stars than slow rotators. This is consistent with the finding that molecular gas and young stars are detected only in fast rotators in the Atlas3D sample, and that fast rotators tend to dustier than slow rotators. [Abridged] We present a detailed study of the physical properties of the molecular gas in a sample of 18 molecular gas-rich early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the ATLAS$ 3D sample. Our goal is to better understand the star formation processes occurring in those galaxies, starting here with the dense star-forming gas. We use existing integrated $^{12}$CO(1-0, 2-1), $^{13}$CO(1-0, 2-1), HCN(1-0) and HCO$^{+}$(1-0) observations and present new $^{12}$CO(3-2) single-dish data. From these, we derive for the first time the average kinetic temperature, H$_{2}$ volume density and column density of the emitting gas, this using a non-LTE theoretical model. Since the CO lines trace different physical conditions than of those the HCN and HCO$^{+}$ lines, the two sets of lines are treated separately. We also compare for the first time the predicted CO spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs) and gas properties of our molecular gas-rich ETGs with those of a sample of nearby well-studied disc galaxies. The gas excitation conditions in 13 of our 18 ETGs appear analogous to those in the centre of the Milky Way. Such results have never been obtained before for ETGs and open a new window to explore further star-formation processes in the Universe. The conclusions drawn should nevertheless be considered carefully, as they are based on a limited number of observations and on a simple model. In the near future, with higher CO transition observations, it should be possible to better identify the various gas components present in ETGs, as well as more precisely determine their associated physical conditions. We study the global efficiency of star formation in high resolution hydrodynamical simulations of gas discs embedded in isolated early-type and spiral galaxies. Despite using a universal local law to form stars in the simulations, we find that the early-type galaxies are offset from the spirals on the large-scale Kennicutt relation, and form stars 2 to 5 times less efficiently. This offset is in agreement with previous results on morphological quenching: gas discs are more stable against star formation when embedded in early-type galaxies due to the lower disc self-gravity and increased shear. As a result, these gas discs do not fragment into dense clumps and do not reach as high densities as in the spiral galaxies. Even if some molecular gas is present, the fraction of very dense gas (above 10^4 cm-3) is significantly reduced, which explains the overall lower star formation efficiency. We also analyse a sample of local early-type and spiral galaxies, measuring their CO and HI surface densities and their star formation rates as determined by their non-stellar 8um emission. As predicted by the simulations, we find that the early-type galaxies are offset from the Kennicutt relation compared to the spirals, with a twice lower efficiency. Finally, we validate our approach by performing a direct comparison between models and observations. We run a simulation designed to mimic the stellar and gaseous properties of NGC524, a lenticular galaxy, and find a gas disc structure and global star formation rate in good agreement with the observations. Morphological quenching thus seems to be a robust mechanism, and is also consistent with other observations of a reduced star formation efficiency in early-type galaxies in the COLD GASS survey. The discovery of a population of massive, compact and quiescent early-type galaxies has changed the view on plausible formation scenarios for the present day population of elliptical galaxies. Traditionally assumed formation histories dominated by 'single events' like early collapse or major mergers appear to be incomplete and have to be embedded in the context of hierarchical cosmological models with continuous gas accretion and the merging of small stellar systems (minor mergers). Once these processes are consistently taken into account the hierarchical models favor a two-phase assembly process and are in much better shape to capture the observed trends. We analyze the spectra, spatial distributions and kinematics of Ha, [NII] and [SII] emission in a sample of 42, z~2.2 UV/optically selected star forming galaxies (SFGs) from the SINS & zC-SINF surveys, 35 of which were observed in the adaptive optics mode of SINFONI. This is supplemented by kinematic data from 48 z~1-2.5 galaxies from the literature. We find that the kinematic classification of the high-z SFGs as `dispersion dominated' or `rotation dominated' correlates most strongly with their intrinsic sizes. Smaller galaxies are more likely `dispersion-dominated' for two main reasons: 1) The rotation velocity scales linearly with galaxy size but intrinsic velocity dispersion does not depend on size, and as such, their ratio is systematically lower for smaller galaxies, and 2) Beam smearing strongly decreases large-scale velocity gradients and increases observed dispersion much more for galaxies with sizes at or below the resolution. Dispersion dominated SFGs may thus have intrinsic properties similar to `rotation dominated' SFGs, but are primarily more compact, lower mass, less metal enriched and may have higher gas fractions, plausibly because they represent an earlier evolutionary state., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted by ApJ

We explore the connection between the local escape velocity, V_esc, and the stellar population properties in the ATLAS3D survey, a complete, volume-limited sample of nearby early-type galaxies. We make use of ugriz photometry to construct Multi-Gaussian Expansion models of the surface brightnesses of our galaxies. We are able to fit the full range of surface brightness profiles found in our sample, and in addition we reproduce the results of state-of-the-art photometry in the literature with residuals of 0.04 mags. We utilise these photometric models and SAURON integral-field spectroscopy, combined with Jeans dynamical modelling, to determine the local V_esc derived from the surface brightness. We find that the local V_esc is tightly correlated with the Mgb and Fe5015 linestrengths and optical colours, and anti-correlated with the Hbeta linestrength. In the case of the Mgb and Colour - V_esc relations we find that the relation within individual galaxies follows the global relation between different galaxies. We intentionally ignored any uncertain contribution due to dark matter since we are seeking an empirical description of stellar population gradients in early-type galaxies that is ideal for quantitative comparison with model predictions. We identify a population of galaxies that occur only at low V_esc that exhibit negative gradients in the Mgb - and Colour -V_esc relations. These galaxies typically have young central stellar populations and contain significant amounts of molecular gas and dust. Combining these results with N-body simulations of binary mergers we use the Mgb-V_esc relation to constrain the possible number of dry mergers experienced by the local early-type galaxy population - a typical massive ETG can have experienced only ~1.5 major mergers before becoming a significant outlier in the Mgb-V_esc relation. Dynamical modeling and strong lensing data indicate that the total density profiles of early-type galaxies are close to isothermal, i.e., rho_tot ~ r^gamma with gamma approx -2. To understand the origin of this universal slope we study a set of simulated spheroids formed in isolated binary mergers as well as the formation within the cosmological framework. The total stellar plus dark matter density profiles can always be described by a power law with an index of gamma approx -2.1 with a tendency toward steeper slopes for more compact, lower-mass ellipticals. In the binary mergers the amount of gas involved in the merger determines the precise steepness of the slope. This agrees with results from the cosmological simulations where ellipticals with steeper slopes have a higher fraction of stars formed in situ. Each gas-poor merger event evolves the slope toward gamma ~ -2, once this slope is reached further merger events do not change it anymore. All our ellipticals have flat intrinsic combined stellar and dark matter velocity dispersion profiles. We conclude that flat velocity dispersion profiles and total density distributions with a slope of gamma ~ -2 for the combined system of stars and dark matter act as a natural attractor. The variety of complex formation histories as present in cosmological simulations, including major as well as minor merger events, is essential to generate the full range of observed density slopes seen for present-day elliptical galaxies., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal, 17 pages, 12 figures

We use interferometric CO observations to compare the extent, surface brightness profiles and kinematics of the molecular gas in CO-rich Atlas3D early-type galaxies (ETGs) and spiral galaxies. We find that the molecular gas extent is smaller in absolute terms in ETGs than in late-type galaxies, but that the size distributions are similar once scaled by the galaxies optical/stellar characteristic scale-lengths. Virgo cluster ETGs have less extended molecular gas reservoirs than field counterparts. Approximately half of ETGs have molecular gas surface brightness profiles that follow the stellar light profile. These systems often have relaxed gas out to large radii, suggesting they are unlikely to have had recent merger/accretion events. A third of the sample galaxies show molecular gas surface brightness profiles that fall off slower than the light, and sometimes show a truncation. We suggest that ram pressure stripping and/or the presence of hot gas has compressed/truncated the gas in these systems. The remaining galaxies have rings, or composite profiles, that we argue can be caused by the effects of bars. We investigated the kinematics of the molecular gas using position-velocity diagrams, and compared the observed kinematics with dynamical model predictions, and the observed stellar and ionised gas velocities. We confirm that the molecular gas reaches beyond the turnover of the circular velocity curve in ~70% of our CO-rich Atlas3D ETGs. In general we find that in most galaxies the molecular gas is relaxed and dynamically cold. Molecular gas is a better direct tracer of the circular velocity than the ionised gas, justifying its use as a kinematic tracer for Tully-Fisher and similar analyses. [Abridged] We analyse the morphological structures in galaxies of the ATLAS3D sample by fitting a single Sersic profile and decomposing all non-barred objects (180 of 260 objects) in two components parameterised by an exponential and a general Sersic function. The aim of this analysis is to look for signatures of discs in light distributions of nearby early-type galaxies and compare them to kinematic properties. Using Sersic index from single component fits for a distinction between slow and fast rotators, or even late- and early-type galaxies, is not recommended. Assuming that objects with n>3 are slow rotators (or ellipticals), there is only a 22 per cent probability to correctly classify objects as slow rotators (or 37 per cent of previously classified as ellipticals). We show that exponential sub-components, as well as light profiles fitted with only a single component of a low Sersic index, can be linked with the kinematic evidence for discs in early-type galaxies. The median disk-to-total light ratio for fast and slow rotators is 0.41 and 0.0, respectively. Similarly, the median Sersic indices of the bulge (general Sersic component) are 1.7 and 4.8 for fast and slow rotators, respectively. Overall, discs or disc-like structures, are present in 83 per cent of early-type galaxies which do not have bars, and they show a full range of disk-to-total light ratios. Discs in early-type galaxies contribute with about 40 per cent to the total mass of the analysed (non-barred) objects. The decomposition into discs and bulges can be used as a rough approximation for the separation between fast and slow rotators, but it is not a substitute, as there is only a 59 per cent probability to correctly recognise slow rotators. We present the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA) ATLAS3D molecular gas imaging survey, a systematic study of the distribution and kinematics of molecular gas in CO-rich early-type galaxies. Our full sample of 40 galaxies (30 newly mapped and 10 taken from the literature) is complete to a 12CO(1-0) integrated flux of 18.5 Jy km/s, and it represents the largest, best-studied sample of its type to date. A comparison of the CO distribution of each galaxy to the g-r color image (representing dust) shows that the molecular gas and dust distributions are in good agreement and trace the same underlying interstellar medium. The galaxies exhibit a variety of CO morphologies, including discs (50%), rings (15%), bars+rings (10%), spiral arms (5%), and mildly (12.5%) and strongly (7.5%) disrupted morphologies. There appear to be weak trends between galaxy mass and CO morphology, whereby the most massive galaxies in the sample tend to have molecular gas in a disc morphology. We derive a lower limit to the total accreted molecular gas mass across the sample of 2.48x10^10 Msuns, or approximately 8.3x10^8 Msuns per minor merger within the sample, consistent with minor merger stellar mass ratios., Comment: 52 pages, 5 figures (+ 33 appendix figures), MNRAS, accepted

We report the discovery of a giant HI tail in the intra-group medium of HCG 44 as part of the Atlas3D survey. The tail is ~300 kpc long in projection and contains ~5x10^8 M_sun of HI. We detect no diffuse stellar light at the location of the tail down to ~28.5 mag/arcsec^2 in g band. We speculate that the tail might have formed as gas was stripped from the outer regions of NGC 3187 (a member of HCG 44) by the group tidal field. In this case, a simple model indicates that about 1/3 of the galaxy's HI was stripped during a time interval of <1 Gyr. Alternatively, the tail may be the remnant of an interaction between HCG 44 and NGC 3162, a spiral galaxy now ~650 kpc away from the group. Regardless of the precise formation mechanism, the detected HI tail shows for the first time direct evidence of gas stripping in HCG 44. It also highlights that deep HI observations over a large field are needed to gather a complete census of this kind of events in the local Universe., Comment: MNRAS, accepted

We study the dark and luminous mass distributions, circular velocity curves (CVC), line-of-sight kinematics, and angular momenta for a sample of 42 cosmological zoom simulations of massive galaxies. Using a temporal smoothing technique, we are able to reach large radii. We find that: (i)The dark matter halo density profiles outside a few kpc follow simple power-law models, with flat dark matter CVCs for lower-mass systems, and rising CVCs for high-mass haloes. The projected stellar density distributions at large radii can be fitted by Sersic functions with n>10, larger than for typical ETGs. (ii)The massive systems have nearly flat total CVCs at large radii, while the less massive systems have mildly decreasing CVCs. The slope of the CVC at large radii correlates with v_circ itself. (iii)The dark matter fractions within Re are in the range 15-30% and increase to 40-65% at 5Re. Larger and more massive galaxies have higher dark matter fractions. (iv)The short axes of simulated galaxies and their host dark matter haloes are well aligned and their short-to-long axis ratios are correlated. (v)The stellar vrms(R) profiles are slowly declining, in agreement with planetary nebulae observations in the outer haloes of most ETGs. (vi)The line-of-sight velocity fields v show that rotation properties at small and large radii are correlated. Most radial profiles for the cumulative specific angular momentum parameter lambda(R) are nearly flat or slightly rising, with values in [0.06,0.75] from 2Re to 5Re. (vii)Stellar mass, ellipticity at 5Re, and lambda(5Re) are correlated: the more massive systems have less angular momentum and are rounder, as for observed ETGs. (viii)More massive galaxies with a large fraction of accreted stars have radially anisotropic velocity distributions outside Re. Based on SINFONI Ha, [NII] and [SII] AO data of 30 z \sim 2 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) from the SINS and zcSINF surveys, we find a strong correlation of the Ha broad flux fraction with the star formation surface density of the galaxy, with an apparent threshold for strong outflows occurring at 1 Msun yr^-1 kpc^-2. Above this threshold, we find that SFGs with logm_\ast>10 have similar or perhaps greater wind mass loading factors (eta = Mdotout/SFR) and faster outflow velocities than lower mass SFGs. This trend suggests that the majority of outflowing gas at z \sim 2 may derive from high-mass SFGs, and that the z \sim 2 mass-metallicity relation is driven more by dilution of enriched gas in the galaxy gas reservoir than by the efficiency of outflows. The mass loading factor is also correlated with the SFR and inclination, such that more star-forming and face-on galaxies launch more powerful outflows. For galaxies that have evidence for strong outflows, we find that the broad emission is spatially extended to at least the half-light radius (\sim a few kpc). We propose that the observed threshold for strong outflows and the observed mass loading of these winds can be explained by a simple model wherein break-out of winds is governed by pressure balance in the disk. Using the ratio of the [SII] doublet in a broad and narrow component, we find that outflowing gas has a density of \sim10-100 cm^-3, significantly less than that of the star forming gas (600 cm^-3)., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ

We use the SAURON and GMOS integral field spectrographs to observe the active galactic nucleus (AGN) powered outflow in NGC 1266. This unusual galaxy is relatively nearby (D=30 Mpc), allowing us to investigate the process of AGN feedback in action. We present maps of the kinematics and line strengths of the ionised gas emission lines Halpha, Hbeta, [OIII], [OI], [NII] and [SII], and report on the detection of Sodium D absorption. We use these tracers to explore the structure of the source, derive the ionised and atomic gas kinematics and investigate the gas excitation and physical conditions. NGC 1266 contains two ionised gas components along most lines of sight, tracing the ongoing outflow and a component closer to the galaxy systemic, the origin of which is unclear. This gas appears to be disturbed by a nascent AGN jet. We confirm that the outflow in NGC 1266 is truly multiphase, containing radio plasma, atomic, molecular and ionised gas and X-ray emitting plasma. The outflow has velocities up to \pm900 km/s away from the systemic velocity, and is very likely to be removing significant amounts of cold gas from the galaxy. The LINER-like line-emission in NGC 1266 is extended, and likely arises from fast shocks caused by the interaction of the radio jet with the ISM. These shocks have velocities of up to 800 km/s, which match well with the observed velocity of the outflow. Sodium D equivalent width profiles are used to set constraints on the size and orientation of the outflow. The ionised gas morphology correlates with the nascent radio jets observed in 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz continuum emission, supporting the suggestion that an AGN jet is providing the energy required to drive the outflow., Comment: Contains 18 figures. Observational studies have revealed a "downsizing" trend in black hole (BH) growth: the number densities of luminous AGN peak at higher redshifts than those of faint AGN. This would seem to imply that massive black holes formed before low mass black holes, in apparent contradiction to hierarchical clustering scenarios. We investigate whether this observed "downsizing" in BH growth is reproduced in a semi-analytic model for the formation and evolution of galaxies and black holes, set within the hierarchical paradigm for structure formation (Somerville et al. 2008; S08). In this model, black holes evolve from light seeds (\sim100M\odot) and their growth is merger-driven. The original S08 model (baseline model) reproduces the number density of AGN at intermediate redshifts and luminosities, but underproduces luminous AGN at very high redshift (z > 3) and overproduces them at low redshift (z < 1). In addition, the baseline model underproduces low-luminosity AGN at low redshift (z < 1). To solve these problems we consider several modifications to the physical processes in the model: (1) a 'heavy' black hole seeding scenario (2) a sub-Eddington accretion rate ceiling that depends on the cold gas fraction, and (3) an additional black hole accretion mode due to disk instabilities. With these three modifications, the models can explain the observed downsizing, successfully reproduce the bolometric AGN luminosity function and simultaneously reproduce galaxy and black hole properties in the local Universe. We also perform a comparison with the observed soft and hard X-ray luminosity functions of AGN, including an empirical correction for torus-level obscuration, and reach similar conclusions. Our best-fit model suggests a scenario in which disk instabilities are the main driver for moderately luminous Seyfert galaxies at low redshift, while major mergers are the main trigger for luminous AGN., Comment: 24 pages, accepted by MNRAS for publication

There is observational evidence for inside-out growth of elliptical galaxies since $z \gtrsim 2-3$, which is not driven by in-situ star formation. Many systems at high redshift have small sizes $\sim 1kpc$ and surface brightness profiles with low Sersic indices n. The most likely descendants have, on average, grown by a factor of two in mass and a factor of four in size, indicating $r \propto M^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha \gtrsim 2$. They also have surface brightness profiles with $n \gtrsim 5$. This evolution can be qualitatively explained on the basis of two assumptions: compact ellipticals predominantly grow by collisionless minor or intermediate 'dry' mergers, and they are embedded in massive dark matter halos. We draw these conclusions from idealized collisionless mergers spheroidal galaxies - with and without dark matter - with mass ratios of 1:1, 1:5, and 1:10. The sizes evolve as $r \propto M^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha < 2$ for mass-ratios of 1:1. For minor mergers of galaxies embedded in dark matter halos, the sizes grow significantly faster and the profile shapes change more rapidly. Mergers with moderate mass-ratios of 1:5 give $\alpha \sim 2.3$ and a final Sersic index of $n = 9.5$ after doubling the stellar mass. This is accompanied by a significant increase of the dark matter fraction within the stellar half-mass radius, driven by the strong size increase probing larger, dark matter dominated regions. Only a few intermediate mass-ratio mergers of galaxies embedded in massive dark matter halos can result in the observed concurrent inside-out growth and the rapid evolution in profile shapes. Apart from negative stellar metallicity gradients such a 'minor' merger scenario also predicts significantly lower dark matter fractions for $z \sim 2$ compact quiescent galaxies and their rare present day analogues (abbreviated)., Comment: accepted for publication

We investigate the accuracy in the recovery of the stellar dynamics of barred galaxies when using axisymmetric dynamical models. We do this by trying to recover the mass-to-light ratio (M/L) and the anisotropy of realistic galaxy simulations using the Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion (JAM) method. However, given that the biases we find are mostly due to an application of an axisymmetric modeling algorithm to a non-axisymmetric system and in particular to inaccuracies in the de-projected mass model, our results are relevant for general axisymmetric modelling methods. We run N-body collisionless simulations to build a library with various luminosity distribution, constructed to mimic real individual galaxies, with realistic anisotropy. The final result of our evolved library of simulations contains both barred and unbarred galaxies. The JAM method assumes an axisymmetric mass distribution, and we adopt a spatially constant M/L and anisotropy beta_z=1-sigma_z^2/sigma_R^2 distributions. The models are fitted to two-dimensional maps of the second velocity moments V_rms=sqrt(V^2+sigma^2) of the simulations for various viewing angles (position angle of the bar and inclination of the galaxy). We find that the inclination is generally well recovered by the JAM models, for both barred and unbarred simulations. For unbarred simulations the M/L is also accurately recovered, with negligible median bias and with a maximum one of just Delta(M/L)<1.5% when the galaxy is not too close to face on. At very low inclinations (i<30 deg) the M/L can be significantly overestimated (9% in our tests, but errors can be larger for very face-on views). For barred simulations the M/L is on average (when PA=45 deg) essentially unbiased, but we measure an over/under estimation of up to Delta(M/L)=15% in our tests. We present a new statistical method to determine the relationship between the stellar masses of galaxies and the masses of their host dark matter haloes over the entire cosmic history from z~4 to the present. This multi-epoch abundance matching (MEAM) model self-consistently takes into account that satellite galaxies first become satellites at times earlier than they are observed. We employ a redshift-dependent parameterization of the stellar-to-halo mass relation to populate haloes and subhaloes in the Millennium simulations with galaxies, requiring that the observed stellar mass functions at several redshifts be reproduced simultaneously. Using merger trees extracted from the dark matter simulations in combination with MEAM, we predict the average assembly histories of galaxies, separating into star formation within the galaxies (in-situ) and accretion of stars (ex-situ). The peak star formation efficiency decreases with redshift from 23% at z=0 to 9% at z=4 while the corresponding halo mass increases from 10^11.8M\odot to 10^12.5M\odot. The star formation rate of central galaxies peaks at a redshift which depends on halo mass; for massive haloes this peak is at early cosmic times while for low-mass galaxies the peak has not been reached yet. In haloes similar to that of the Milky-Way about half of the central stellar mass is assembled after z=0.7. In low-mass haloes, the accretion of satellites contributes little to the assembly of their central galaxies, while in massive haloes more than half of the central stellar mass is formed ex-situ with significant accretion of satellites at z<2. We find that our method implies a cosmic star formation history and an evolution of specific star formation rates which are consistent with those inferred directly. We present a sample of nine high resolution cosmological simulations in the mass range of M_vir=7x10^11-4x10^12 M_sun starting from LambdaCDM initial conditions. Our simulations include primordial radiative cooling, photoionization, star formation, supernova II feedback, but exclude supernova driven winds and AGN feedback. The simulated galaxies assemble in two phases, with the initial growth dominated by compact (rr_eff) resulting in an assembly redshift of z_{f,acc}~0.5-1.5 with much larger scatter. We find a positive correlation between the fraction of accreted stars and the final mass of our galaxies. We show that gravitational feedback strongly suppresses late star formation in massive galaxies contributing to the observed galaxy color bimodality. The accretion of stellar material is also responsible for the observed size growth of early-type galaxies. In addition, we find that the dark matter fractions within the stellar half-mass radii continuously increase towards lower redshift from about f_DM~0.05 at z~3 to f_DM~0.1-0.3 at z=0. Furthermore, the logarithmic slope of the total density profile is nearly isothermal at the present-day (gamma'~1.9-2.2). We study the evolution of the stellar and dark matter components in a galaxy cluster of $10^{15} \, \rm{M_{\odot}}$ from $z=3$ to the present epoch using the high-resolution collisionless simulations of Ruszkowski & Springel (2009). At $z=3$ the dominant progenitor halos were populated with spherical model galaxies with and without accounting for adiabatic contraction. We apply a weighting scheme which allows us to change the relative amount of dark and stellar material assigned to each simulation particle in order to produce luminous properties which agree better with abundance matching arguments and observed bulge sizes at $z=3$. This permits the study of the effect of initial compactness on the evolution of the mass-size relation. We find that for more compact initial stellar distributions the size of the final Brightest Cluster Galaxy grows with mass according to $r\propto M^{2}$, whereas for more extended initial distributions, $r\propto M$. Our results show that collisionless mergers in a cosmological context can reduce the strength of inner dark matter cusps with changes in logarithmic slope of 0.3 to 0.5 at fixed radius. Shallow cusps such as those found recently in several strong lensing clusters thus do not necessarily conflict with CDM, but may rather reflect on the initial structure of the progenitor galaxies, which was shaped at high redshift by their formation process., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Surveying eighteen 12CO-bright galaxies from the ATLAS3D early-type galaxy sample with the Institut de Radio Astronomie Millim\'etrique (IRAM) 30m telescope, we detect 13CO(1-0) and 13CO(2-1) in all eighteen galaxies, HCN(1-0) in 12/18 and HCO+(1-0) in 10/18. We find that the line ratios 12CO(1-0)/13CO(1-0) and 12CO(1-0)/HCN(1-0) are clearly correlated with several galaxy properties: total stellar mass, luminosity-weighted mean stellar age, molecular to atomic gas ratio, dust temperature and dust morphology. We suggest that these correlations are primarily governed by the optical depth in the 12CO lines; interacting, accreting and/or starbursting early-type galaxies have more optically thin molecular gas while those with settled dust and gas discs host optically thick molecular gas. The ranges of the integrated line intensity ratios generally overlap with those of spirals, although we note some outliers in the 12CO(1- 0)/13CO(1-0), 12CO(2-1)/13CO(2-1) and HCN/HCO+(1-0) ratios. In particular, three galaxies are found to have very low 12CO(1-0)/13CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1)/13CO(2-1) ratios. Such low ratios may signal particularly stable molecular gas which creates stars less efficiently than 'normal' (i.e. below Schmidt-Kennicutt prediction), consistent with the low dust temperatures seen in these galaxies., Comment: MNRAS accepted

We employ hydrodynamical simulations to study the effects of dissipational gas physics on the vertical heating and thickening of disc galaxies during minor mergers. For the first time we present a suite of simulations that includes a diffuse, rotating, cooling, hot gaseous halo, as predicted by cosmological hydrodynamical simulations as well as models of galaxy formation. We study the effect of this new gaseous component on the vertical structure of a Milky Way-like stellar disc during 1:10 and 1:5 mergers. For 1:10 mergers we find no increased final thin disc scale height compared to the isolated simulation, leading to the conclusion that thin discs can be present even after a 1:10 merger if a reasonable amount of hot gas is present. The reason for this is the accretion of new cold gas, leading to the formation of a massive new thin stellar disc that dominates the surface brightness profile. In a previous study, in which we included only cold gas in the disk, we showed that the presence of cold gas decreased the thickening by a minor merger relative to the no-gas case. Here, we show that the evolution of the scale height in the presences of a cooling hot halo is dominated by the formation of the new stellar disc. In this scenario, the thick disc is the old stellar disc that has been thickened in a minor merger at z>1, while the thin disc is the new stellar disc that reforms after this merger. In addition, we study the evolution of the scale height during a 1:5 merger and find that a thin disc can be present even after this merger, provided enough hot gas is available. The final scale height in our simulations depends on the mass of the hot gaseous halo, the efficiency of the winds and the merger mass ratio. We find post-merger values in the range 0.5

We propose a simple model for the origin of fast and slow rotator early-type galaxies (ETG) within the hierarchical $\Lambda$CDM scenario, that is based on the assumption that the mass fraction of stellar discs in ETGs is a proxy for the specific angular momentum expressed via $\lambda_R$. Within our model we reproduce the fraction of fast and slow rotators as a function of magnitude in the \atl survey, assuming that fast rotating ETGs have at least 10% of their total stellar mass in a disc component. In agreement with \atl observations we find that slow rotators are predominantly galaxies with $ M_* > 10^{10.5}$ M$_{\odot}$ contributing $\sim 20%$ to the overall ETG population. We show in detail that the growth histories of fast and slow rotators are different, supporting the classification of ETGs into these two categories. Slow rotators accrete between $\sim 50% -90%$ of their stellar mass from satellites and their most massive progenitors have on average up to 3 major mergers during their evolution. Fast rotators in contrast, accrete less than 50% and have on average less than one major merger in their past. We find that the underlying physical reason for the different growth histories is the slowing down and ultimately complete shut-down of gas cooling in massive galaxies. Once cooling and associated star formation in disc stops, galaxies grow via infall from satellites. Frequent minor mergers thereby, destroy existing stellar discs via violent relaxation and also tend to lower the specific angular momentum of the main stellar body, lowering $\lambda_R$ into the slow rotator regime. We analyze 40 cosmological re-simulations of individual massive galaxies with present-day stellar masses of $M_{*} > 6.3 \times 10^{10} M_{\odot}$ in order to investigate the physical origin of the observed strong increase in galaxy sizes and the decrease of the stellar velocity dispersions since redshift $z \approx 2$. At present 25 out of 40 galaxies are quiescent with structural parameters (sizes and velocity dispersions) in agreement with local early type galaxies. At z=2 all simulated galaxies with $M_* \gtrsim 10^{11}M_{\odot}$ (11 out of 40) at z=2 are compact with projected half-mass radii of $\approx$ 0.77 ($\pm$0.24) kpc and line-of-sight velocity dispersions within the projected half-mass radius of $\approx$ 262 ($\pm$28) kms$^{-1}$ (3 out of 11 are already quiescent). Similar to observed compact early-type galaxies at high redshift the simulated galaxies are clearly offset from the local mass-size and mass-velocity dispersion relations. Towards redshift zero the sizes increase by a factor of $\sim 5-6$, following $R_{1/2} \propto (1+z)^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha = -1.44$ for quiescent galaxies ($\alpha = -1.12$ for all galaxies). The velocity dispersions drop by about one-third since $z \approx 2$, following $\sigma_{1/2} \propto (1+z)^{\beta}$ with $\beta = 0.44$ for the quiescent galaxies ($\beta = 0.37$ for all galaxies). The simulated size and dispersion evolution is in good agreement with observations and results from the subsequent accretion and merging of stellar systems at $z\lesssim 2$ which is a natural consequence of the hierarchical structure formation. A significant number of the simulated massive galaxies (7 out of 40) experience no merger more massive than 1:4 (usually considered as major mergers). Hydrodynamic simulations of galaxies with active galactic nuclei (AGN) have typically employed feedback that is purely local: i.e., an injection of energy to the immediate neighborhood of the black hole. We perform GADGET-2 simulations of massive elliptical galaxies with an additional feedback component: an observationally calibrated X-ray radiation field which emanates from the black hole and heats gas out to large radii from the galaxy center. We find that including the heating and radiation pressure associated with this X-ray flux in our simulations enhances the effects which are commonly reported from AGN feedback. This new feedback model is twice as effective as traditional feedback at suppressing star formation, produces 3 times less star formation in the last 6 Gyr, and modestly lowers the final BH mass (30%). The mass assembly of galaxies leaves imprints in their outskirts, such as shells and tidal tails. The frequency and properties of such fine structures depend on the main acting mechanisms - secular evolution, minor or major mergers - and on the age of the last substantial accretion event. We use this to constrain the mass assembly history of two apparently relaxed nearby Early-Type Galaxies (ETGs) selected from the Atlas-3D sample, NGC 680 and NGC 5557. Our ultra deep optical images obtained with MegaCam on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope reach 29 mag/arcsec^2 in the g-band. They reveal very low-surface brightness (LSB) filamentary structures around these ellipticals. Among them, a gigantic 160 kpc long tail East of NGC 5557 hosts gas-rich star-forming objects. NGC 680 exhibits two major diffuse plumes apparently connected to extended HI tails, as well as a series of arcs and shells. Comparing the outer stellar and gaseous morphology of the two ellipticals with that predicted from models of colliding galaxies, we argue that the LSB features are tidal debris, the star-forming objects near NGC 5557, long lived Tidal Dwarf Galaxies and that each of the two ETGs was assembled during a relatively recent, major wet merger, which likely occurred at a redshift below z = 0.5. The inner kinematics of NGC 680 is typical for fast rotators which make the bulk of nearby ETGs in the Atlas-3D sample. NGC 5557 belongs to the poorly populated class of massive, round, slow rotators that are predicted by semi-analytic models and cosmological simulations to be the end-product of a complex mass accretion history, involving ancient major mergers and more recent minor mergers. Our observations suggest that under specific circumstances a single binary merger may dominate the formation history of such objects and thus that at least some massive ETGs may form at relatively low redshift (abridged)., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, MNRAS in press

We study the formation of early-type galaxies through mergers with a sample of 70 high-resolution (softening length < 60 pc and 12*10^6 particles) numerical simulations of binary mergers of disc galaxies and 16 simulations of ETG remergers. These simulations, designed to accompany observations and models conducted within the Atlas3D project, encompass various mass ratios (from 1:1 to 6:1), initial conditions and orbital parameters. The progenitor disc galaxies are spiral-like with bulge to disc ratios typical of Sb and Sc galaxies. We find that binary mergers of disc galaxies with mass ratios of 3:1 and 6:1 are nearly always classified as Fast Rotators according to the Atlas3D criterion (based on the lambda_R parameter): they preserve the structure of the input fast rotating spiral progenitors. They have intrinsic ellipticities larger than 0.5, cover intrinsic lambda_R values between 0.2 and 0.6, within the range of observed Fast Rotators. Major disc mergers (mass ratios of 2:1 and 1:1) lead to both Fast and Slow Rotators. Most of the Fast Rotators produced in major mergers have intermediate flattening, with ellipticities between 0.4 and 0.6. Most Slow Rotators formed in these binary disc mergers hold a stellar Kinematically Distinct Core (KDC) in their 1-3 central kilo-parsec: these KDCs are built from the stellar components of the progenitors. Besides a handful of specific observed systems -- the counter-rotating discs (2-sigma galaxies) -- these therefore cannot reproduce the observed population of Slow Rotators in the nearby Universe. The mass ratio of the progenitors is a fundamental parameter for the formation of Slow Rotators in these binary mergers, but it also requires a retrograde spin for the earlier-type (Sb) progenitor galaxy with respect to the orbital angular momentum. We report the discovery of a powerful molecular wind from the nucleus of the non-interacting nearby S0 field galaxy NGC 1266. The single-dish CO profile exhibits emission to +/- 400 km/s and requires a nested Gaussian fit to be properly described. Interferometric observations reveal a massive, centrally- concentrated molecular component with a mass of 1.1x10^9 Msuns and a molecular outflow with a molecular mass of 2.4x10^7 Msuns. The molecular gas close to the systemic velocity consists of a rotating, compact nucleus with a mass of about 4.1x108 Msuns within a radius of approximately 60 pc. This compact molecular nucleus has a surface density of \approx 2.7 \times 10^4 Msuns/pc^2, more than two orders of magnitude larger than that of giant molecular clouds in the disk of the Milky Way, and it appears to sit on the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation despite its extreme kinematics and energetic activity. We interpret this nucleus as a disk that confines the outflowing wind. A mass outflow rate of 13 Msuns/yr leads to a depletion timescale of about 85 Myr. The star formation in NGC 1266 is insufficient to drive the outflow, and thus it is likely driven by the active galactic nucleus (AGN). The concentration of the majority of the molecular gas in the central 100 pc requires an extraordinary loss of angular momentum, but no obvious companion or interacting galaxy is present to enable the transfer. We demonstrate here using both single-dish and interferometric observations that CO molecules are an excellent kinematic tracer, even in high-mass galaxies, allowing us to investigate for the first time the CO Tully-Fisher relation of early-type galaxies. We compare the Tully-Fisher relations produced using both single-dish and interferometric data and various inclination estimation methods, and evaluate the use of the velocity profile shape as a criterion for selecting galaxies in which the molecular gas extends beyond the peak of the rotation curve. We show that the gradient and zero-point of the best-fit relations are robust, independent of the velocity measure and inclination used, and agree with those of relations derived using stellar kinematics. We also show that the early-type CO Tully-Fisher (CO-TF) relation is offset from the CO-TF of spirals by 0.98 \pm 0.22 magnitude at Ks-band, in line with other results. The intrinsic scatter of the relation is found to be \approx 0.4 magnitudes, similar to the level found in the spiral galaxy population. Next generation facilities such as the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) should allow this technique to be used in higher-redshift systems, providing a simple new tool to trace the mass-to-light ratio evolution of the most massive galaxies over cosmic time., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS accepted

We provide a census of the apparent stellar angular momentum within 1 Re of a volume-limited sample of 260 early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the nearby Universe, using integral-field spectroscopy obtained in the course of the ATLAS3D project. We exploit the LambdaR parameter to characterise the existence of two families of ETGs: Slow Rotators which exhibit complex stellar velocity fields and often include stellar kinematically Distinct Cores (KDCs), and Fast Rotators which have regular velocity fields. Our complete sample of 260 ETGs leads to a new criterion to disentangle Fast and Slow Rotators which now includes a dependency on the apparent ellipticity (Epsilon). It separates the two classes significantly better than the previous prescription, and than a criterion based on V/Sigma: Slow Rotators and Fast Rotators have LambdaR lower and larger than kFSxSQRT(Epsilon), respectively, where kFS=0.31 for measurements made within 1 Re. We show that the vast majority of early-type galaxies are Fast Rotators: these have regular stellar rotation, with aligned photometric and kinematic axes (Paper II, Krajnovic et al. 2011}, include discs and often bars and represent 86% (224/260) of all early-type galaxies in the volume-limited ATLAS3D sample. Fast Rotators span the full range of apparent ellipticities from 0 to 0.85, and we suggest that they cover intrinsic ellipticities from about 0.35 to 0.85, the most flattened having morphologies consistent with spiral galaxies. Only a small fraction of ETGs are Slow Rotators representing 14% (36/260) of the ATLAS3D sample of ETGs. Of all Slow Rotators, 11% (4/36) exhibit two counter-rotating stellar disc-like components and are rather low mass objects (Mdyn<10^10.5 M_Sun). All other Slow Rotators (32/36) appear relatively round on the sky (Epsilon_e<0.4), tend to be massive (Mdyn>10^10.5 M_Sun), and often (17/32) exhibit KDCs., Comment: 28 pages, 23 figures, LaTeX. We have carried out a survey for 12CO J=1-0 and J=2-1 emission in the 260 early-type galaxies of the volume-limited Atlas3D sample, with the goal of connecting their star formation and assembly histories to their cold gas content. This is the largest volume-limited CO survey of its kind and is the first to include many Virgo Cluster members. Sample members are dynamically hot galaxies with a median stellar mass 3\times 10^{10} Msun; they are selected by morphology rather than colour, and the bulk of them lie on the red sequence. The overall CO detection rate is 56/259 = 0.22 \error 0.03, with no dependence on K luminosity and only a modest dependence on dynamical mass. There are a dozen CO detections among the Virgo Cluster members; statistical analysis of their H_2 mass distributions and their dynamical status within the cluster shows that the cluster's influence on their molecular masses is subtle at best, even though (unlike spirals) they seem to be virialized within the cluster. We suggest that the cluster members have retained their molecular gas through several Gyr residences in the cluster. There are also a few extremely CO-rich early-type galaxies with H_2 masses >= 10^9 Msun, and these are in low density environments. We do find a significant trend between molecular content and the stellar specific angular momentum. The galaxies of low angular momentum also have low CO detection rates, suggesting that their formation processes were more effective at destroying molecular gas or preventing its re-accretion. [Abridged] We use the ATLAS3D sample of 260 early-type galaxies (ETGs) to study the apparent kinematic misalignment angle, Psi, defined as the angle between the photometric and kinematic major axis. We find that 71% of nearby ETGs are strictly aligned systems (Psi > 5 deg), an additional 14% have 5 < Psi < 10 deg and 90% of galaxies have Psi < 15 deg. Taking into account measurement uncertainties, 90% of galaxies can be considered aligned to better than 5 deg, suggesting that only a small fraction of early-type galaxies (~10%) are not consistent with axisymmetry within the projected half-light radius. We identify morphological features such as bars and rings (30%), dust structures (16%), blue nuclear colours (6%) and evidence of interactions (8%). We use kinemetry to analyse the mean velocity maps and separate galaxies in two broad types of regular and non-regular rotators. We find 82% of regular rotators and 17% non-regular rotators, with 2 galaxies that we were not able to classify due to data quality. The non-regular rotators are typically found in dense regions and are massive. The majority of galaxies do not have any specific kinemetric features, but we highlight here the frequency of the kinematically distinct cores (7%) and the aligned double peaks in the velocity dispersion maps (4%). Most of the galaxies that are misaligned have complex kinematics and are non-regular rotators. While the trends are weak, there is a tendency that large values of Psi are found in galaxies at intermediate environmental densities and among the most massive galaxies in the sample. We suggest that the most common formation mechanism for ETGs preserves the axisymmetry of the disk progenitors. We reexamine the age distribution of star clusters in the Antennae in the context of N-body+hydrodynamical simulations of these interacting galaxies. All of the simulations that account for the observed morphology and other properties of the Antennae have star formation rates that vary relatively slowly with time, by factors of only 1.3 - 2.5 in the past 10^8 yr. In contrast, the observed age distribution of the clusters declines approximately as a power law, dN/dt \propto t^{gamma} with gamma = -1.0, for ages 10^6 yr \la t \la 10^9 yr. These two facts can only be reconciled if the clusters are disrupted progressively for at least 10^8 yr and possibly 10^9 yr. When we combine the simulated formation rates with a power-law model, f_surv \propto t^{delta}, for the fraction of clusters that survive to each age t, we match the observed age distribution with exponents in the range -0.9 \la delta \la -0.6 (with a slightly different delta for each simulation). The similarity between delta and gamma indicates that dN/dt is shaped mainly by the disruption of clusters rather than variations in their formation rate.
