Abstract

The Euclid mission will measure cosmological parameters with unprecedented precision. To distinguish between cosmological models, it is essential to generate realistic mock observables from cosmological simulations that were run in both the standard $\Lambda$-cold-dark-matter ($\Lambda$CDM) paradigm and in many non-standard models beyond $\Lambda$CDM. We present the scientific results from a suite of cosmological N-body simulations using non-standard models including dynamical dark energy, k-essence, interacting dark energy, modified gravity, massive neutrinos, and primordial non-Gaussianities. We investigate how these models affect the large-scale-structure formation and evolution in addition to providing synthetic observables that can be used to test and constrain these models with Euclid data. We developed a custom pipeline based on the Rockstar halo finder and the nbodykit large-scale structure toolkit to analyse the particle output of non-standard simulations and generate mock observables such as halo and void catalogues, mass density fields, and power spectra in a consistent way. We compare these observables with those from the standard $\Lambda$CDM model and quantify the deviations. We find that non-standard cosmological models can leave significant imprints on the synthetic observables that we have generated. Our results demonstrate that non-standard cosmological N-body simulations provide valuable insights into the physics of dark energy and dark matter, which is essential to maximising the scientific return of Euclid., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

This paper presents a search for high redshift galaxies from the Euclid Early Release Observations program "Magnifying Lens." The 1.5 deg$^2$ area covered by the twin Abell lensing cluster fields is comparable in size to the few other deep near-infrared surveys such as COSMOS, and so provides an opportunity to significantly increase known samples of rare UV-bright galaxies at $z\approx6-8$ ($M_{\rm UV}\lesssim-22$). Beyond their still uncertain role in reionisation, these UV-bright galaxies are ideal laboratories from which to study galaxy formation and constrain the bright-end of the UV luminosity function. Of the 501994 sources detected from a combined $Y_{\rm E}$, $J_{\rm E}$, and $H_{\rm E}$ NISP detection image, 168 do not have any appreciable VIS/$I_{\rm E}$ flux. These objects span a range in spectral colours, separated into two classes: 139 extremely red sources; and 29 Lyman-break galaxy candidates. Best-fit redshifts and spectral templates suggest the former is composed of both $z\gtrsim5$ dusty star-forming galaxies and $z\approx1-3$ quiescent systems. The latter is composed of more homogeneous Lyman break galaxies at $z\approx6-8$. In both cases, contamination by L- and T-type dwarfs cannot be ruled out with Euclid images alone. Additional contamination from instrumental persistence is investigated using a novel time series analysis. Abstract

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Abstract

The cross-correlation of cosmic voids with the lensing convergence ($\kappa$) map of the CMB fluctuations offers a powerful tool to refine our understanding of the dark sector in the consensus cosmological model. Our principal aim is to compare the lensing signature of our galaxy data set with simulations based on the concordance model and characterize the results with an $A_{\kappa}$ consistency parameter. In particular, our measurements contribute to the understanding of the "lensing-is-low" tension of the $\Lambda$CDM model. We selected luminous red galaxies from the WISE-Pan-STARSS data set, allowing an extended 14,200 deg$^2$ sky area, that offers a more precise measurement compared to previous studies. We created 2D and 3D void catalogs to cross-correlate their locations with the Planck lensing map and studied their average imprint signal using a stacking methodology. Applying the same procedure, we also generated a mock catalog from the WebSky simulation for comparison. The 2D void analysis revealed good agreement with the standard cosmological model with $A_{\kappa}\approx1.06 \pm 0.08$, i.e. $S/N=13.3$, showing a higher $S/N$ than previous studies using voids detected in the Dark Energy Survey data set. The 3D void analysis exhibited a lower $S/N$ and demonstrated worse agreement with our mock catalog than the 2D voids. These deviations might be attributed to limitations in the mock catalog, such as imperfections in the LRG selection, as well as a potential asymmetry between the North and South patches of the WISE-Pan-STARSS data set in terms of data quality. Overall, we present a significant detection of a CMB lensing signal associated with cosmic voids, largely consistent with the concordance model. Abstract

We present a new infrared survey covering the three Euclid deep fields and four other Euclid calibration fields using Spitzer's Infrared Array Camera (IRAC). We have combined these new observations with all relevant IRAC archival data of these fields in order to produce the deepest possible mosaics of these regions. In total, these observations represent nearly 11% of the total Spitzer mission time. The resulting mosaics cover a total of approximately 71.5deg$^2$ in the 3.6 and 4.5um bands, and approximately 21.8deg$^2$ in the 5.8 and 8um bands. They reach at least 24 AB magnitude (measured to sigma, in a 2.5 arcsec aperture) in the 3.6um band and up to ~ 5 mag deeper in the deepest regions. The astrometry is tied to the Gaia astrometric reference system, and the typical astrometric uncertainty for sources with 16<[3.6]<19 is <0.15 arcsec. The photometric calibration is in excellent agreement with previous WISE measurements. We have extracted source number counts from the 3.6um band mosaics and they are in excellent agreement with previous measurements. Given that the Spitzer Space Telescope has now been decommissioned these mosaics are likely to be the definitive reduction of these IRAC data. This survey therefore represents an essential first step in assembling multi-wavelength data on the Euclid deep fields which are set to become some of the premier fields for extragalactic astronomy in the 2020s., Comment: 15 pages with 11 figures, approved by Euclid Consortium Publication Board and submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics. A method involving intensity correlation measurements is described, which allows for the complete removal of Doppler broadening in the emission of electromagnetic radiation from far-away sources that are inaccessible to conventional Doppler-free measurements. The technique, relying on a correction to g(2) of order N-1, probes the separation between neighboring spectral lines and is also applicable to the elimination of broadening due to collisions (N is the number of emitting particles and g(2) is the second-order field correlation function). Possible applications include a determination of cosmological parameters from red shifts of gravitationally-lensed quasars.

Abstract

We use the "Dark Energy and Massive Neutrino Universe" (DEMNUni) simulations to compare the constraining power of "sufficient statistics" with the standard matter power spectrum on the sum of neutrino masses, $M_\nu \equiv \sum m_\nu$. In general, the power spectrum, even supplemented with higher moments of the distribution, captures only a fraction of the available cosmological information due to correlations between the Fourier modes. In contrast, the non-linear transform of sufficient statistics, approximated by a logarithmic mapping A=ln(1+\delta), was designed to capture all the available cosmological information contained in the matter clustering; in this sense it is an optimal observable. Our analysis takes advantage of the recent analytical model developed by Carron et al. 2014 to estimate both the matter power spectrum and the A-power spectrum covariance matrices. Using a Fisher information approach, we find that using sufficient statistics increases up to 8 times the available information on the total neutrino mass at z=0, thus tightening the constraints by almost a factor of 3 compared to the matter power spectrum., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Beyond the linear regime of structure formation, part of cosmological information encoded in galaxy clustering becomes inaccessible to the usual power spectrum. "Sufficient statistics", A*, were introduced recently to recapture the lost, and ultimately extract all, cosmological information. We present analytical approximations for the A* and traditional power spectra as well as for their covariance matrices in order to calculate analytically their cosmological information content in the context of Fisher information theory. Our approach allows the precise quantitative comparison of the techniques with each other and to the total information in the data, and provides insights into sufficient statistics. In particular, we find that while the A* power spectrum has a similar shape to the usual galaxy power spectrum, its amplitude is strongly modulated by small scale statistics. This effect is mostly responsible for the ability of the A* power spectrum to recapture the information lost for the usual power spectrum. We use our framework to forecast the best achievable cosmological constraints for projected surveys as a function of their galaxy density, and compare the information content of the two power spectra. We find that sufficient statistics extract all cosmological information, resulting in an approximately factor of ~2 gain for dense projected surveys at low redshift. Abstract

Beyond the linear regime, Fourier modes of cosmological random fields become correlated, and the power spectrum of density fluctuations contains only a fraction of the available cosmological information. To unveil this formerly hidden information, the A* non-linear transform was introduced; it is optimized both for the nonlinearities induced by gravity and observational noise. Quantifying the resulting increase of our knowledge of cosmological parameters, we forecast the constraints from the angular power spectrum and that of A* from l ~ 200 to 3000 for upcoming galaxy surveys such as: the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), Euclid, the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) and the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We find that at low redshifts this new data analysis strategy can double the extracted information, effectively doubling the survey area. To test the accuracy of our forecasting and the power of our data analysis methods, we apply the A* transformation to the latest release of the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) Wide. While this data set is too sparse to allow for more than modest gains (~1.1-1.2), the realized gain from our method is in excellent agreement with our forecast, thus verifying the robustness of our analysis and prediction pipelines., Comment: 11, 7 figures, 6 tables

We performed a comprehensive statistical analysis using complex phases of the a_lm coefficients computed from the most recent data of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). Our aim was to confirm or constrain the presence of non-Gaussianities in the data. We found phase correlations - that suggest non-Gaussianity - at high-l in a_lm coefficients by applying various statistical tests. Most of all, we detected a non-Gaussian signal reaching a significance of 4.7 sigma using random walk statistics and simulations. However, our conclusion is that the non-Gaussian behavior is due to contamination from galactic foregrounds that show up in small scales only. When masked out the contaminated regions, we found no significant non-Gaussianity. Furthermore, we constrained the f_NL parameter using CMB simulations that mimic primordial non-Gaussianity. Abstract

E. Abdalla, G. F. Abellán, A. Aboubrahim et al., The standard Λ Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) cosmological model provides a good description of a wide range of astrophysical and cosmological data. However, there are a few big open questions that make the standard model look like an approximation to a more realistic scenario yet to be found. In this paper, we list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant H0, the σ8–S8 tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the 5.0σ tension between the Planck CMB estimate of the Hubble constant H0 and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the H0 evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the Planck CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density Ωm, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure (σ8, fσ8). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the H0–S8 tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.
