Search

The high contrast and spatial resolution requirements for directly imaging exoplanets requires effective coordination of wavefront control, coronagraphy, observation techniques, and post-processing algorithms. However, even with this suite of tools, identifying and retrieving exoplanet signals embedded in resolved scattered light regions can be extremely challenging due to the increased noise from scattered light off the circumstellar disk and the potential misinterpretation of the true nature of the detected signal. This issue pertains not only to imaging terrestrial planets in habitable zones within zodiacal and exozodiacal emission but also to young planets embedded in circumstellar, transitional, and debris disks. This is particularly true for H{\alpha} detection of exoplanets in transitional disks. This work delves into recent H{\alpha} observations of three transitional disks systems with MagAO-X, an extreme adaptive optics system for the 6.5-meter Magellan Clay telescope. We employed angular differential imaging (ADI) and simultaneous spectral differential imaging (SSDI) in combination with KLIP, a PCA algorithm in post-processing, for optimal starlight suppression and quasi-static noise removal. We discuss the challenges in protoplanet identification with MagAO-X in environments rich with scattered and reflected light from disk structures and explore a potential solution for removing noise contributions from real astronomical objects with current observation and post-processing techniques.

We present the preliminary design of GMagAO-X, the first-light high-contrast imager planned for the Giant Magellan Telescope. GMagAO-X will realize the revolutionary increase in spatial resolution and sensitivity provided by the 25 m GMT. It will enable, for the first time, the spectroscopic characterization of nearby potentially habitable terrestrial exoplanets orbiting late-type stars. Additional science cases include: reflected light characterization of mature giant planets; measurement of young extrasolar giant planet variability; characterization of circumstellar disks at unprecedented spatial resolution; characterization of benchmark stellar atmospheres at high spectral resolution; and mapping of resolved objects such as giant stars and asteroids. These, and many more, science cases will be enabled by a 21,000 actuator extreme adaptive optics system, a coronagraphic wavefront control system, and a suite of imagers and spectrographs. We will review the science-driven performance requirements for GMagAO-X, which include achieving a Strehl ratio of 70% at 800 nm on 8th mag and brighter stars, and post-processed characterization at astrophysical flux-ratios of 1e-7 at 4 lambda/D (26 mas at 800 nm) separation. We will provide an overview of the resulting mechanical, optical, and software designs optimized to deliver this performance. We will also discuss the interfaces to the GMT itself, and the concept of operations. We will present an overview of our end-to-end performance modeling and simulations, including the control of segment phasing, as well as an overview of prototype lab demonstrations. We have detected solar-like oscillations in the mid K-dwarf $\varepsilon$ Indi A, making it the coolest dwarf to have measured oscillations. The star is noteworthy for harboring a pair of brown dwarf companions and a Jupiter-type planet. We observed $\varepsilon$ Indi A during two radial velocity campaigns, using the high-resolution spectrographs HARPS (2011) and UVES (2021). Weighting the time series, we computed the power spectra and established the detection of solar-like oscillations with a power excess located at $5265 \pm 110 \ \mu$Hz -- the highest frequency solar-like oscillations so far measured in any star. The measurement of the center of the power excess allows us to compute a stellar mass of $0.782 \pm 0.023 \ M_\odot$ based on scaling relations and a known radius from interferometry. We also determine the amplitude of the peak power and note that there is a slight difference between the two observing campaigns, indicating a varying activity level. We present resolved images of the inner disk component around HD 141569 using the Magellan adaptive optics system with the Clio2 1 - 5 $\mu$m camera, offering a glimpse of a complex system thought to be in a short evolutionary phase between protoplanetary and debris disk stages. We use a reference star along with the KLIP algorithm for PSF subtraction to detect the disk inward to about 0.24" (~25 au assuming a distance of 111 pc) at high signal-to-noise ratios at $L'$ (3.8 $\mu$m), $Ls$ (3.3 $\mu$m), and narrowband $Ice$ (3.1 $\mu$m). We identify an arc or spiral arm structure at the southeast extremity, consistent with previous studies. We implement forward modeling with a simple disk model within the framework of an MCMC sampler to better constrain the geometrical attributes and photometry using our KLIP-reduced disk images. We then leverage these modeling results to facilitate a comparison of the measured brightness in each passband to find a reduction in scattered light from the disk in the $Ice$ filter, implying significant absorption due to water ice in the dust. Additionally, our best-fit disk models exhibit peak brightness in the southwestern, back-scattering region of the disk, which we suggest to be possible evidence of 3.3 $\mu$m PAH emission. The proposed protoplanet AB Aur b is a spatially concentrated emission source imaged in the mm-wavelength disk gap of the Herbig Ae/Be star AB Aur. Its near-infrared spectrum and absence of strong polarized light have been interpreted as evidence supporting the protoplanet interpretation. However, the complex scattered light structures in the AB Aur disk pose challenges in resolving the emission source and interpreting the true nature of AB Aur b. We present new images of the AB Aur system obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 in the ultraviolet (UV) and optical bands. AB Aur b and the known disk spirals are recovered in the F336W, F410M, and F645N bands. The spectral energy distribution of AB Aur b shows absorption in the Balmer jump, mimicking those of early-type stars. By comparing the colors of AB Aur b to those of the host star, the disk spirals, and predictions from scattered light and self-luminous models, we find that the emission from AB Aur b is inconsistent with planetary photospheric or accretion shock models. Instead, it is consistent with those measured in the circumstellar disks that trace scattered light. We conclude that the UV and visible emission from AB Aur b does not necessitate the presence of a protoplanet. We synthesize observational constraints on AB Aur b and discuss inconsistent interpretations of AB Aur b among different datasets. The detection of emission lines associated with accretion processes is a direct method for studying how and where gas giant planets form, how young planets interact with their natal protoplanetary disk and how volatile delivery to their atmosphere takes place. H$\alpha$ ($\lambda=0.656\,\mu$m) is expected to be the strongest accretion line observable from the ground with adaptive optics systems, and is therefore the target of specific high-contrast imaging campaigns. We present MagAO-X and HST data obtained to search for H$\alpha$ emission from the previously detected protoplanet candidate orbiting AS209, identified through ALMA observations. No signal was detected at the location of the candidate, and we provide limits on its accretion. Our data would have detected an H$\alpha$ emission with $F_\mathrm{H\alpha}>2.5\pm0.3 \times10^{-16}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, a factor 6.5 lower than the HST flux measured for PDS70b (Zhou et al., 2021). The flux limit indicates that if the protoplanet is currently accreting it is likely that local extinction from circumstellar and circumplanetary material strongly attenuates its emission at optical wavelengths. In addition, the data reveal the first image of the jet north of the star as expected from previous detections of forbidden lines. Finally, this work demonstrates that current ground-based observations with extreme adaptive optics systems can be more sensitive than space-based observations, paving the way to the hunt for small planets in reflected light with extremely large telescopes., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

The vector Apodizing Phase Plate (vAPP) is a pupil plane coronagraph that suppresses starlight by forming a dark hole in its point spread function (PSF). The unconventional and non-axisymmetrical PSF arising from the phase modification applied by this coronagraph presents a special challenge to post-processing techniques. We aim to implement a recently developed post-processing algorithm, temporal reference analysis of planets (TRAP) on vAPP coronagraphic data. The property of TRAP that uses non-local training pixels, combined with the unconventional PSF of vAPP, allows for more flexibility than previous spatial algorithms in selecting reference pixels to model systematic noise. Datasets from two types of vAPPs are analysed: a double grating-vAPP (dgvAPP360) that produces a single symmetric PSF and a grating-vAPP (gvAPP180) that produces two D-shaped PSFs. We explore how to choose reference pixels to build temporal systematic noise models in TRAP for them. We then compare the performance of TRAP with previously implemented algorithms that produced the best signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) in companion detections in these datasets. We find that the systematic noise between the two D-shaped PSFs is not as temporally associated as expected. Conversely, there is still a significant number of systematic noise sources that are shared by the dark hole and the bright side in the same PSF. We should choose reference pixels from the same PSF when reducing the dgvAPP360 dataset or the gvAPP180 dataset with TRAP. We use observations with the infrared-optimized MagAO system and Clio camera in 3.9 $\mu$m light to place stringent mass constraints on possible undetected companions to Sirius A. We suppress the light from Sirius A by imaging it through a grating vector-apodizing phase plate coronagraph with 180-degree dark region (gvAPP-180). To remove residual starlight in post-processing, we apply a time-domain principal-components-analysis-based algorithm we call PCA-Temporal (PCAT), which uses eigen-time-series rather than eigen-images to subtract starlight. By casting the problem in terms of eigen-time-series, we reduce the computational cost of post-processing the data, enabling the use of the fully sampled dataset for improved contrast at small separations. We also discuss the impact of retaining fine temporal sampling of the data on final contrast limits. We achieve post-processed contrast limits of $1.5 \times 10^{-6}$ to $9.8 \times 10^{-6}$ outside of 0.75 arcsec which correspond to planet masses of 2.6 to 8.0 $M_J$. These are combined with values from the recent literature of high-contrast imaging observations of Sirius to synthesize an overall completeness fraction as a function of mass and separation. High-contrast imaging has afforded astronomers the opportunity to study light directly emitted by adolescent (tens of Myr) and ``proto" ($<$10Myr) planets still undergoing formation. Direct detection of these planets is enabled by empirical Point Spread Function (PSF) modeling and removal algorithms. The computational intensity of such algorithms, and their multiplicity of tunable input parameters, has led to the prevalence of ad-hoc optimization approaches to high-contrast imaging results. In this work, we present a new, systematic approach to optimization vetted using data of the high-contrast stellar companion HD 142527 B from the Magellan Adaptive Optics (MagAO) Giant Accreting Protoplanet Survey (GAPlanetS). More specifically, we present a grid search technique designed to explore three influential parameters of the PSF-subtraction algorithm pyKLIP -- annuli, movement, and KL modes. We consider multiple metrics for post-processed image quality in order to optimally recover at H$\alpha$ (656nm) synthetic planets injected into contemporaneous continuum (643nm) images. These metrics include: peak (single-pixel) SNR, average (multi-pixel average) SNR, 5$\sigma$ contrast, and false-positive fraction. We apply continuum-optimized KLIP reduction parameters to six H$\alpha$ direct detections of the low-mass stellar companion HD142527 B, and recover the companion at a range of separations. Relative to a single-informed, non-optimized set of KLIP parameters applied to all datasets uniformly, our multi-metric grid search optimization led to improvements in companion SNR of up to 1.2$\sigma$, with an average improvement of 0.6$\sigma$. Accreting protoplanets represent a window into planet formation processes. We report H{\alpha} differential imaging results from the deepest and most comprehensive accreting protoplanet survey to date, acquired with the Magellan Adaptive Optics (MagAO) system's VisAO camera. The fourteen transitional disks targeted are ideal candidates for protoplanet discovery due to their wide, heavily depleted central cavities, wealth of non-axisymmetric circumstellar disk features evocative of ongoing planet formation, and ongoing stellar accretion. To address the twin challenges of morphological complexity in the target systems and PSF instability, we develop novel approaches for frame selection and optimization of the Karhounen-Loeve Image Processing algorithm pyKLIP. We detect one new candidate protoplanet, CS Cha "c", at a separation of 75mas and a Delta mag of 5.1 and robustly recover the HD142527 B and HD100453 B low mass stellar companions across multiple epochs. Though we cannot rule out a substantial scattered light contribution to its emission, we also recover LkCa 15 b. Its presence inside of the cleared disk cavity and consistency with a forward-modeled point source suggest that it remains a viable protoplanet candidate. The protoplanet PDS 70 c was marginally recovered under our conservative general methodology. However, through targeted optimization in H-alpha} imagery, we tentatively recover PDS 70 c in three epochs and PDS 70 b in one epoch. Of the many other previously-reported companions and companion candidates around objects in the sample, we do not recover any additional robust candidates. However, lack of recovery at moderate H-alpha contrast does not rule out the presence of protoplanets at these locations, and we report limiting H-alpha contrasts in such cases., Comment: Final version, in press at AJ

GMagAO-X is the near first light ExAO coronagraphic instrument for the 25.4m GMT. It is designed for a slot on the folded port of the GMT. To meet the strict ExAO fitting and servo error requirement (<90nm rms WFE), GMagAO-X must have 21,000 actuator DM capable of >2KHz correction speeds. To minimize wavefront/segment piston error GMagAO-X has an interferometric beam combiner on a vibration isolated table, as part of this "21,000 actuator parallel DM". Piston errors are sensed by a Holographic Dispersed Fringe Sensor (HDFS). In addition to a coronagraph, it has a post-coronagraphic Lyot Low Order WFS (LLOWFS) to sense non-common path (NCP) errors. The LLOWFS drives a non-common path DM (NCP DM) to correct those NCP errors. GMagAO-X obtains high-contrast science and wavefront sensing in the visible and/or the NIR. We present the conceptual design of GMagAO-X, an extreme adaptive optics system for the 25 m Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). We are developing GMagAO-X to be available at or shortly after first-light of the GMT, to enable early high contrast exoplanet science in response to the Astro2020 recommendations. A key science goal is the characterization of nearby potentially habitable terrestrial worlds. GMagAO-Xis a woofer-tweeter system, with integrated segment phasing control. The tweeter is a 21,000 actuator segmented deformable mirror, composed of seven 3000 actuator segments. A multi-stage wavefront sensing system provides for bootstrapping, phasing, and high order sensing. The entire instrument is mounted in a rotator to provide gravity invariance. After the main AO system, visible (g to y) and near-IR (Y to H) science channels contain integrated coronagraphic wavefront control systems. The fully corrected and, optionally, coronagraphically filtered beams will then be fed to a suite of focal plane instrumentation including imagers and spectrographs. This will include existing facility instruments at GMT via fiber feeds. To assess the design we have developed an end-to-end frequency-domain modeling framework for assessing the performance of GMagAO-X. The dynamics of the many closed-loop feedback control systems are then modeled. Finally, we employ a frequency-domain model of post-processing algorithms to analyze the final post-processed sensitivity. The CoDR for GMagAO-X was held in September, 2021. We present a status update for MagAO-X, a 2000 actuator, 3.6 kHz adaptive optics and coronagraph system for the Magellan Clay 6.5 m telescope. MagAO-X is optimized for high contrast imaging at visible wavelengths. Our primary science goals are detection and characterization of Solar System-like exoplanets, ranging from very young, still-accreting planets detected at H-alpha, to older temperate planets which will be characterized using reflected starlight. First light was in Dec, 2019, but subsequent commissioning runs were canceled due to COVID-19. In the interim, MagAO-X has served as a lab testbed. Highlights include implementation of several focal plane and low-order wavefront sensing algorithms, development of a new predictive control algorithm, and the addition of an IFU module. MagAO-X also serves as the AO system for the Giant Magellan Telescope High Contrast Adaptive Optics Testbed. We will provide an overview of these projects, and report the results of our commissioning and science run in April, 2022. Finally, we will present the status of a comprehensive upgrade to MagAO-X to enable extreme-contrast characterization of exoplanets in reflected light. These upgrades include a new post-AO 1000-actuator deformable mirror inside the coronagraph, latest generation sCMOS detectors for wavefront sensing, optimized PIAACMC coronagraphs, and computing system upgrades. MagAO-X system is a new adaptive optics for the Magellan Clay 6.5m telescope. MagAO-X has been designed to provide extreme adaptive optics (ExAO) performance in the visible. VIS-X is an integral-field spectrograph specifically designed for MagAO-X, and it will cover the optical spectral range (450 - 900 nm) at high-spectral (R=15.000) and high-spatial resolution (7 mas spaxels) over a 0.525 arsecond field of view. VIS-X will be used to observe accreting protoplanets such as PDS70 b and c. End-to-end simulations show that the combination of MagAO-X with VIS-X is 100 times more sensitive to accreting protoplanets than any other instrument to date. VIS-X can resolve the planetary accretion lines, and therefore constrain the accretion process. The instrument is scheduled to have its first light in Fall 2021. Improving direct detection capability close to the star through improved star-subtraction and post-processing techniques is vital for discovering new low-mass companions and characterizing known ones at longer wavelengths. We present results of 17 binary star systems observed with the Magellan Adaptive Optics system (MagAO) and the Clio infrared camera on the Magellan Clay Telescope using Binary Differential Imaging (BDI). BDI is an application of Reference Differential Imaging (RDI) and Angular Differential Imaging (ADI) applied to wide binary star systems (2\arcsec $<\Delta \rho<$ 10\arcsec) within the isoplanatic patch in the infrared. Each star serves as the point-spread-function (PSF) reference for the other, and we performed PSF estimation and subtraction using Principal Component Analysis. We report contrast and mass limits for the 35 stars in our initial survey using BDI with MagAO/Clio in L$^\prime$ and 3.95$\mu$m bands. Our achieved contrasts varied between systems, and spanned a range of contrasts from 3.0-7.5 magnitudes and a range of separations from 0.2\arcsec to $\sim$2\arcsec. Stars in our survey span a range of masses, and our achieved contrasts correspond to late-type M dwarf masses down to $\sim$10 M$_{\rm{jup}}$. We also report detection of a candidate companion signal at 0.2\arcsec (18 AU) around HIP 67506 A (SpT G5V, mass $\sim$1.2\Msun), which we estimate to be ~60-90 M$_{\rm{jup}}$. Accreting protoplanets enable the direct characterization of planet formation. As part of a high-contrast imaging search for accreting planets with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3, we present H$\alpha$ images of AB Aurigae (AB Aur), a Herbig Ae/Be star harboring a transition disk. The data were collected in two epochs of direct-imaging observations using the F656N narrow-band filter. After subtracting the point spread function of the primary star, we identify a point-like source located at a P.A. of $182.5^{\circ}\pm1.4^{\circ}$ and a separation of $600\pm22$~mas relative to the host star. The position is consistent with the recently identified protoplanet candidate AB Aur b. The source is visible in two individual epochs separated by ${\sim}50$ days and the H$\alpha$ intensities in the two epochs agree. The H$\alpha$ flux density is $F_{\nu}=1.5\pm0.4$~mJy, $3.2\pm0.9$ times of the optical continuum determined by published HST/STIS photometry. In comparison to PDS 70 b and c, the H$\alpha$ excess emission is weak. The central star is accreting and the stellar H$\alpha$ emission has a similar line-to-continuum ratio as seen in AB Aur b. We conclude that both planetary accretion and scattered stellar light are possible sources of the H$\alpha$ emission, and the H$\alpha$ detection alone does not validate AB Aur b as an accreting protoplanet. Companions embedded in the cavities of transitional circumstellar disks have been observed to exhibit excess luminosity at H$\alpha$, an indication that they are actively accreting. We report 5 years (2013-2018) of monitoring of the position and H$\alpha$ excess luminosity of the embedded, accreting low-mass stellar companion HD 142527 B from the MagAO/VisAO instrument. We use pyklip, a python implementation of the Karhounen-Loeve Image Processing algorithm, to detect the companion. Using pyklip forward modeling, we constrain the relative astrometry to $1-2 \mathrm{mas}$ precision and achieve sufficient photometric precision ($\pm0.2 \mathrm{mag}, 3\%$ error) to detect changes in the H$\alpha$ contrast of the companion over time. In order to accurately determine the relative astrometry of the companion, we conduct an astrometric calibration of the MagAO/VisAO camera against 20 years of Keck/NIRC2 images of the Trapezium cluster. We demonstrate agreement of our VisAO astrometry with other published positions for HD 142527 B, and use orbitize! to generate a posterior distribution of orbits fit to the relative astrometry of HD 142527 B. Our data suggest that the companion is close to periastron passage, on an orbit significantly misinclined with respect to both the wide circumbinary disk and the recently observed inner disk encircling HD 142527 A. We translate observed H-alpha contrasts for HD 142527 B into mass accretion rate estimates on the order of $4-9\times10^{-10} \mathrm{M_\odot}\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. Photometric variation in the H-alpha excess of the companion suggests that the accretion rate onto the companion is variable. We report an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array 0.88 mm (Band 7) continuum detection of the accretion disk around SR 12 c, an $\sim$11 $M_{\rm Jup}$ planetary-mass companion (PMC) orbiting its host binary at 980 au. This is the first submillimeter detection of a circumplanetary disk around a wide PMC. The disk has a flux density of $127 \pm14~\mu$Jy and is not resolved by the $\sim$0.1" beam, so the dust disk radius is likely less than 5 au and can be much smaller if the dust continuum is optically thick. If, however, the dust emission is optically thin, then the SR 12 c disk has a comparable dust mass to the circumplanetary disk around PDS 70 c but is about five times lower than that of the $\sim$12 $M_{\rm Jup}$ free-floating OTS 44. This suggests that disks around bound and unbound planetary-mass objects can span a wide range of masses. The gas mass estimated with an accretion rate of $10^{-11}~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ implies a gas-to-dust ratio higher than 100. If cloud absorption is not significant, a nondetection of ${}^{12}$CO(3-2) implies a compact gas disk around SR 12 c. Future sensitive observations may detect more PMC disks at 0.88 mm flux densities of $\lesssim$100 $\mu$Jy., Comment: Published in ApJL

The vector Apodizing Phase Plate (vAPP) is a class of pupil plane coronagraph that enables high-contrast imaging by modifying the Point Spread Function (PSF) to create a dark hole of deep flux suppression adjacent to the PSF core. Here, we recover the known brown dwarf HR 2562 B using a vAPP coronagraph, in conjunction with the Magellan Adaptive Optics (MagAO) system, at a signal-to-noise of S/N = 3.04 in the lesser studied L-band regime. The data contained a mix of field and pupil-stabilised observations, hence we explored three different processing techniques to extract the companion, including Flipped Differential Imaging (FDI), a newly devised Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-based method for vAPP data. Despite the partial field-stabilisation, the companion is recovered sufficiently to measure a 3.94 $\mu$m narrow-band contrast of (3.05$\pm$1.00) $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ ($\Delta$m$_{3.94 {\mu}m}$ = 8.79$\pm$0.36 mag). Combined with archival GPI and SPHERE observations, our atmospheric modelling indicates a spectral type at the L/T transition with mass M = 29$\pm$15 M$_{\text{Jup}}$, consistent with literature results. However, effective temperature and surface gravity vary significantly depending on the wavebands considered (1200$\leq$T$_{\text{eff}}$(K)$\leq$1700 and 4.0$\leq$log(g)(dex)$\leq$5.0), reflecting the challenges of modelling objects at the L/T transition. Observations between 2.4-3.2 $\mu$m will be more effective in distinguishing cooler brown dwarfs due to the onset of absorption bands in this region. We explain that instrumental scattered light and wind-driven halo can be detrimental to FDI+PCA and thus must be sufficiently mitigated to use this processing technique. We thus demonstrate the potential of vAPP coronagraphs in the characterisation of high-contrast substellar companions, even in sub-optimal conditions, and provide new, complementary photometry of HR 2562 B., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Recent discoveries of young exoplanets within their natal disks offer exciting opportunities to study ongoing planet formation. In particular, a planet's mass accretion rate can be constrained by observing the accretion-induced excess emission. So far, planetary accretion is only probed by the H$\alpha$ line, which is then converted to a total accretion luminosity using correlations derived for stars. However, the majority of the accretion luminosity is expected to emerge from hydrogen continuum emission, and is best measured in the ultraviolet (UV). In this paper, we present HST/WFC3/UVIS F336W (UV) and F656N (H$\alpha$) high-contrast imaging observations of PDS 70. Applying a suite of novel observational techniques, we detect the planet PDS 70 b with signal-to-noise ratios of 5.3 and 7.8 in the F336W and F656N bands, respectively. This is the first time that an exoplanet has been directly imaged in the UV. Our observed H$\alpha$ flux of PDS 70 b is higher by $3.5\sigma$ than the most recent published result. However, the light curve retrieved from our observations does not support greater than 30% variability in the planet's H$\alpha$ emission in six epochs over a five-month timescale. We estimate a mass accretion rate of $1.4\pm0.2\times10^{-8}M_{\mathrm{Jup}}/\mathrm{yr}$. H$\alpha$ accounts for 36% of the total accretion luminosity. Such a high proportion of energy released in line emission suggests efficient production of H$\alpha$ emission in planetary accretion, and motivates using the H$\alpha$ band for searches of accreting planets. We present a massive accreting gap (MAG) planet model that ensures large gaps in transitional disks are kept dust free by the scattering action of three co-planar quasi-circular planets in a 1:2:4 Mean Motion Resonance (MMR). This model uses the constraint of the observed gap size, and the dust-free nature of the gap, to determine within ~10% the possible orbits for 3 massive planets in an MMR. Calculated orbits are consistent with the observed orbits and H-alpha emission (the brightest line to observe these planets) for LkCa 15 b and PDS 70 b and PDS 70 c within observational errors. Moreover, the model suggests that the scarcity of detected H-alpha planets is likely a selection effect of the current limitations of non-coronagraphic, low (<10%) Strehl, H-alpha imaging with Adaptive Optics (AO) systems used in past H-alpha surveys. We predict that as higher Strehl AO systems (with high-performance custom coronagraphs; like 6.5-m Magellan Telescope MagAO-X system) are utilized at H-alpha the number of detected gap planets will substantially increase by more than tenfold. For example, we show that >25 new H-alpha "gap planets" are potentially discoverable by a survey of the best 19 transitional disks with MagAO-X. Here we review the current conceptual optical mechanical design of GMagAO-X --the extreme AO (ExAO) system for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). The GMagAO-X tweeter deformable mirror (DM) design is novel in that it uses an optically distributed set of pupils that allows seven commercially available 3000 actuator BMC DMs to work "in parallel" to effectively create an ELT-scale ExAO tweeter DM --with all parts commercially available today. The GMagAO-X "parallel DM" tweeter will have 21,000 actuators to be used at ~2kHz update speeds enabling high-contrast science at ~5 mas separations in the visible and NIR of the spectrum (0.6-1.7 microns). To prove our concept for GMagAO-X several items must be lab tested: the optical/mechanical concept for the parallel DM; phasing of the GMT pupil; and solving the GMT's "isolated island effect" will all be demonstrated on an optical testbed at the University of Arizona. Here we outline the current design for this "GMT High-Contrast Testbed" that has been proposed jointly by GMTO and the University of Arizona which leverages the existing, operational, MagAO-X ExAO instrument to verify our approach to phase sensing and AO control for high-contrast GMT NGS science. We will also highlight how GMagAO-X can be mounted on the auxiliary port of the GMT and so remain gravity invariant. We present the results of the largest $L^{\prime}$ ($3.8~\mu$m) direct imaging survey for exoplanets to date, the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI) Exozodi Exoplanet Common Hunt (LEECH). We observed 98 stars with spectral types from B to M. Cool planets emit a larger share of their flux in $L^{\prime}$ compared to shorter wavelengths, affording LEECH an advantage in detecting low-mass, old, and cold-start giant planets. We emphasize proximity over youth in our target selection, probing physical separations smaller than other direct imaging surveys. For FGK stars, LEECH outperforms many previous studies, placing tighter constraints on the hot-start planet occurrence frequency interior to $\sim20$ au. For less luminous, cold-start planets, LEECH provides the best constraints on giant-planet frequency interior to $\sim20$ au around FGK stars. Direct imaging survey results depend sensitively on both the choice of evolutionary model (e.g., hot- or cold-start) and assumptions (explicit or implicit) about the shape of the underlying planet distribution, in particular its radial extent. Artificially low limits on the planet occurrence frequency can be derived when the shape of the planet distribution is assumed to extend to very large separations, well beyond typical protoplanetary dust-disk radii ($\lesssim50$ au), and when hot-start models are used exclusively. We place a conservative upper limit on the planet occurrence frequency using cold-start models and planetary population distributions that do not extend beyond typical protoplanetary dust-disk radii. We find that $\lesssim90\%$ of FGK systems can host a 7 to 10 $M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ planet from 5 to 50 au. PDS 70b is a recently discovered and directly imaged exoplanet within the wide ($\gtrsim$40 au) cavity around PDS 70 (Keppler et al. 2018, M\"uller et al. 2018). Ongoing accretion onto the central star suggests that accretion onto PDS 70b may also be ongoing. We present the first high contrast images at H$\alpha$ (656 nm) and nearby continuum (643 nm) of PDS 70 utilizing the MagAO system. The combination of these filters allows for the accretion rate of the young planet to be inferred, as hot infalling hydrogen gas will emit strongly at H$\alpha$ over the optical continuum. We detected a source in H$\alpha$ at the position of PDS 70b on two sequential nights in May 2018, for which we establish a false positive probability of $<$0.1%. We conclude that PDS 70b is a young, actively accreting planet. We utilize the H$\alpha$ line luminosity to derive a mass accretion rate of $\dot M= 10^{-8\pm1}$ M$_{Jup}/yr$, where the large uncertainty is primarily due to the unknown amount of optical extinction from the circumstellar and circumplanetary disks. One of the main pursuits of the MagAO-X project is imaging planets around nearby stars with the direct detection method utilizing an extreme AO system and a coronagraph and a large telescope. The MagAO-X astronomical coronagraph will be implemented on the 6.5 meter Clay Magellan Telescope in Chile. The 22 mirrors in the system require a high level of mirror stability. Our goal is less than 1 microradian drift in tilt per mirror per one degree Celsius change in temperature. There are no commercial 2inch kinematic optical mounts that are truly "zero-drift" from 0-20C. Our solution to this problem was to develop a locking clamp to keep our optics stable and fulfill our specifications. After performing temperature variation and thermal shock testing, we conclude that this novel locking clamp significantly increases the thermal stability of stainless steel mounts by ~10x but still allows accurate microradian positioning of a mirror. Despite promising astrometric signals, to date there has been no success in direct imaging of a hypothesized third member of the Sirius system. Using the Clio instrument and MagAO adaptive optics system on the Magellan Clay 6.5 m telescope, we have obtained extensive imagery of Sirius through a vector apodizing phase plate (vAPP) coronagraph in a narrowband filter at 3.9 microns. The vAPP coronagraph and MagAO allow us to be sensitive to planets much less massive than the limits set by previous non-detections. However, analysis of these data presents challenges due to the target's brightness and unique characteristics of the instrument. We present a comparison of dimensionality reduction techniques to construct background illumination maps for the whole detector using the areas of the detector that are not dominated by starlight. Additionally, we describe a procedure for sub-pixel alignment of vAPP data using a physical-optics-based model of the coronagraphic PSF., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Here we review the current optical mechanical design of MagAO-X. The project is post-PDR and has finished the design phase. The design presented here is the baseline to which all the optics and mechanics have been fabricated. The optical/mechanical performance of this novel extreme AO design will be presented here for the first time. Some highlights of the design are: 1) a floating, but height stabilized, optical table; 2) a Woofer tweeter (2040 actuator BMC MEMS DM) design where the Woofer can be the current f/16 MagAO ASM or, more likely, fed by the facility f/11 static secondary to an ALPAO DM97 woofer; 3) 22 very compact optical mounts that have a novel locking clamp for additional thermal and vibrational stability; 4) A series of four pairs of super-polished off-axis parabolic (OAP) mirrors with a relatively wide FOV by matched OAP clocking; 5) an advanced very broadband (0.5-1.7micron) ADC design; 6) A Pyramid (PWFS), and post-coronagraphic LOWFS NCP wavefront sensor; 7) a vAPP coronagraph for starlight suppression. Currently all the OAPs have just been delivered, and all the rest of the optics are in the lab. Most of the major mechanical parts are in the lab or instrument, and alignment of the optics has occurred for some of the optics (like the PWFS) and most of the mounts. MagAO-X is an entirely new "extreme" adaptive optics system for the Magellan Clay 6.5 m telescope, funded by the NSF MRI program starting in Sep 2016. The key science goal of MagAO-X is high-contrast imaging of accreting protoplanets at H$\alpha$. With 2040 actuators operating at up to 3630 Hz, MagAO-X will deliver high Strehls (>70%), high resolution (19 mas), and high contrast ($< 1\times10^{-4}$) at H$\alpha$ (656 nm). We review astronomical results in the visible (lambda <1 micron) with adaptive optics and note the status the MagAO system and the recent upgrade to visible camera's Simultaneous/Spectra Differential Imager (SDI to SDI+) mode. Since mid-2013 there has been a rapid increase visible AO with over 50 refereed science papers published in just 2015-2016 timeframe. The main focus of this paper is another large (D=6.5m Magellan telescope) AO system (MagAO) which has been very productive in the visible (particularly at the H-alpha emission line). MagAO is an advanced Adaptive Secondary Mirror (ASM) AO system at the Magellan in Chile. This ASM secondary has 585 actuators with <1 msec response times (0.7 ms typically). MagAO utilizes a 1 kHz pyramid wavefront sensor (PWFS). The relatively small actuator pitch (~22 cm/subap, 300 modes, upgraded to 30 pix dia. PWFS) allows moderate Strehls to be obtained in the visible (0.63-1.05 microns). Long exposures (60s) achieve <30mas resolutions and 30% Strehls at 0.62 microns (r') with the VisAO camera (0.5-1.0 microns) in 0.5" seeing with bright R < 9 mag stars (~10% Strehls can be obtained on fainter R~12 mag guide stars). Differential Spectral Imaging (SDI) at H-alpha has been very important for accreting exoplanet detection. There is also a 1-5micron science camera (Clio; Morzinski et al. 2016). These capabilities have led to over 35 MagAO refereed science publications. Here we review the key steps to having good performance in the visible and review the exciting new AO visible science opportunities and science results. We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm continuum upper limits for 5 planetary-mass companions DH Tau B, CT Cha B, GSC 6214-210 B, 1RXS 1609 B, and GQ Lup B. Our survey, together with other ALMA studies, have yielded null results for disks around young planet-mass companions and placed stringent dust mass upper limits, typically less than 0.1 M_earth, when assuming dust continuum is optically thin. Such low-mass gas/dust content can lead to a disk lifetime estimate (from accretion rates) much shorter than the age of the system. To alleviate this timescale discrepancy, we suggest that disks around wide companions might be very compact and optically thick, in order to sustain a few Myr of accretion yet have very weak (sub)millimeter flux so as to still be elusive to ALMA. Our order-of-magnitude estimate shows that compact optically-thick disks might be smaller than 1000 R_jup and only emit ~micro-Jy of flux in the (sub)millimeter, but their average temperature can be higher than that of circumstellar disks. The high disk temperature could impede satellite formation, but it also suggests that mid- to far-infrared might be more favorable than radio wavelengths to characterize disk properties. Finally, the compact disk size might imply that dynamical encounters between the companion and the star, or any other scatterers in the system, play a role in the formation of planetary-mass companions., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

We present H band spectroscopic and Halpha photometric observations of HD 100546 obtained with GPI and MagAO. We detect H band emission at the location of the protoplanet HD 100546b, but show that choice of data processing parameters strongly affects the morphology of this source. It appears point-like in some aggressive reductions, but rejoins an extended disk structure in the majority of the others. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this emission appears stationary on a timescale of 4.6 yrs, inconsistent at the 2sigma level with a Keplerian clockwise orbit at 59 au in the disk plane. The H band spectrum of the emission is inconsistent with any type of low effective temperature object or accreting protoplanetary disk. It strongly suggests a scattered light origin, as it is consistent with the spectrum of the star and the spectra extracted at other locations in the disk. A non detection at the 5sigma level of HD 100546b in differential Halpha imaging places an upper limit, assuming the protoplanet lies in a gap free of extinction, on the accretion luminosity and accretion rate of 1.7E-4 Lsun and MMdot<6.4E-7Mjup^2/yr for 1Rjup. These limits are comparable to the accretion luminosity and rate of TTauri-stars or LkCa 15b. Taken together, these lines of evidence suggest that the H band source at the location of HD 100546b is not emitted by a planetary photosphere or an accreting circumplanetary disk but is a disk feature enhanced by the PSF subtraction process. This non-detection is consistent with the non-detection in the K band reported in an earlier study but does not exclude the possibility that HD 100546b is deeply embedded., Comment: Accepted to AJ, 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

We present optical and near-infrared high contrast images of the transitional disk HD 100546 taken with the Magellan Adaptive Optics system (MagAO) and the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI). GPI data include both polarized intensity and total intensity imagery, and MagAO data are taken in Simultaneous Differential Imaging mode at H{\alpha}. The new GPI H -band total intensity data represent a significant enhancement in sensitivity and field rotation compared to previous data sets and enable a detailed exploration of substructure in the disk. The data are processed with a variety of differential imaging techniques (polarized, angular, reference, and simultaneous differential imaging) in an attempt to identify the disk structures that are most consistent across wavelengths, processing techniques, and algorithmic parameters. The inner disk cavity at 15 au is clearly resolved in multiple datasets, as are a variety of spiral features. While the cavity and spiral structures are identified at levels significantly distinct from the neighboring regions of the disk under several algorithms and with a range of algorithmic parameters, emission at the location of HD 100546 c varies from point-like under aggressive algorithmic parameters to a smooth continuous structure with conservative parameters, and is consistent with disk emission. Features identified in the HD100546 disk bear qualitative similarity to computational models of a moderately inclined two-armed spiral disk, where projection effects and wrapping of the spiral arms around the star result in a number of truncated spiral features in forward-modeled images., Comment: accepted to AJ

Multi-wavelength observations provide a complementary view of the formation of young directly-imaged planet-mass companions. We report the ALMA 1.3 mm and Magellan adaptive optics (MagAO) H-alpha, i', z', and Ys observations of the GQ Lup system, a classical T Tauri star with a 10-40 Mjup substellar companion at ~110 AU projected separation. We estimate the accretion rates for both components from the observed H-alpha fluxes. In our 0.05 arcsec resolution ALMA map, we resolve GQ Lup A's disk in dust continuum, but no signal is found from the companion. The disk is compact, with a radius of ~22 AU, a dust mass of ~6 Earth masses, an inclination angle of ~56 deg, and a very flat surface density profile indicative of a radial variation in dust grain sizes. No gaps or inner cavity are found in the disk, so there is unlikely a massive inner companion to scatter GQ Lup B outward. Thus, GQ Lup B might have formed in situ via disk fragmentation or prestellar core collapse. We also show that GQ Lup A's disk is misaligned with its spin axis, and possibly with GQ Lup B's orbit. Our analysis on the tidal truncation radius of GQ Lup A's disk suggests that GQ Lup B's orbit might have a low eccentricity., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

HD 11112 is an old, Sun-like star that has a long-term radial velocity (RV) trend indicative of a massive companion on a wide orbit. Here we present direct images of the source responsible for the trend using the Magellan Adaptive Optics system. We detect the object (HD 11112B) at a separation of 2\fasec 2 (100 AU) at multiple wavelengths spanning 0.6-4 \microns ~and show that it is most likely a gravitationally-bound cool white dwarf. Modeling its spectral energy distribution (SED) suggests that its mass is 0.9-1.1 \msun, which corresponds to very high-eccentricity, near edge-on orbits from Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis of the RV and imaging data together. The total age of the white dwarf is $>2\sigma$ discrepant with that of the primary star under most assumptions. The problem can be resolved if the white dwarf progenitor was initially a double white dwarf binary that then merged into the observed high-mass white dwarf. HD 11112B is a unique and intriguing benchmark object that can be used to calibrate atmospheric and evolutionary models of cool white dwarfs and should thus continue to be monitored by RV and direct imaging over the coming years., Comment: Accepted to ApJ on September 8, 2016. 13 pages aastex6 2-column format. Transition disks, protoplanetary disks with inner clearings, are promising objects in which to directly image forming planets. The high contrast imaging technique of non-redundant masking is well posed to detect planetary mass companions at several to tens of AU in nearby transition disks. We present non-redundant masking observations of the T Cha and LkCa 15 transition disks, both of which host posited sub-stellar mass companions. However, due to a loss of information intrinsic to the technique, observations of extended sources (e.g. scattered light from disks) can be misinterpreted as moving companions. We discuss tests to distinguish between these two scenarios, with applications to the T Cha and LkCa 15 observations. We argue that a static, forward-scattering disk can explain the T Cha data, while LkCa 15 is best explained by multiple orbiting companions., Comment: SPIE conference proceeding

We analyze archival data from Bailey and co-workers from the $Magellan$ adaptive optics system and present the first 0.9 $\mu$m detection ($z' = 20.3\pm0.4$ mag; $\Delta z'=13.0\pm0.4$ mag) of the 11 $M_\mathrm{Jup}$ circumbinary planet HD 106906AB b, as well as the 1 and 3.8 $\mu$m detections of the debris disk around the binary. The disk has an east-west asymmetry in length and surface brightness, especially at 3.8 $\mu$m where the disk appears to be one-sided. The spectral energy distribution of b, when scaled to the $K_S$-band photometry, is consistent with 1800 K atmospheric models without significant dust reddening, unlike some young, very red, low-mass companions such as CT Cha B and 1RXS 1609 B. Therefore, the suggested circumplanetary disk of Kalas and co-workers might not contain much material, or might be closer to face-on. Finally, we suggest that the widest ($a\gtrsim100$ AU) low mass ratio ($M_\mathrm{p}/M_\mathrm{\star} \equiv q\lesssim0.01$) companions may have formed inside protoplanetary disks, but were later scattered by binary/planet interactions. Such a scattering event may have occurred for HD 106906AB b with its central binary star, but definitive proof at this time is elusive., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of BD+20594b, a high density sub-Neptune exoplanet, made using photometry from Campaign 4 of the two-wheeled Kepler (K2) mission, ground-based radial velocity follow-up from HARPS and high resolution lucky and adaptive optics imaging obtained using AstraLux and MagAO, respectively. The host star is a bright ($V=11.04$, $K_s = 9.37$), slightly metal poor ([Fe/H]$=-0.15\pm 0.05$ dex) solar analogue located at $152.1^{+9.7}_{-7.4}$ pc from Earth, for which we find a radius of $R_*=0.928^{+0.055}_{-0.040}R_\odot$ and a mass of $M_* = 0.961^{+0.032}_{-0.029}M_\odot$. A joint analysis of the K2 photometry and HARPS radial velocities reveal that the planet is in a $\approx 42$ day orbit around its host star, has a radius of $2.23^{+0.14}_{-0.11}R_\oplus$, and a mass of $16.3^{+6.0}_{-6.1}M_\oplus$. Although the data at hand puts the planet in the region of the mass-radius diagram where we could expect planets with a pure rock (i.e. magnesium silicate) composition using two-layer models (i.e., between rock/iron and rock/ice compositions), we discuss more realistic three-layer composition models which can explain the high density of the discovered exoplanet. The fact that the planet lies in the boundary between "possibly rocky" and "non-rocky" exoplanets, makes it an interesting planet for future RV follow-up., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. Recently, Gauza et al. (2015) reported the discovery of a companion to the late M-dwarf, VHS J125601.92-125723.9 (VHS 1256-1257). The companion's absolute photometry suggests its mass and atmosphere are similar to the HR 8799 planets. However, as a wide companion to a late-type star, it is more accessible to spectroscopic characterization. We discovered that the primary of this system is an equal-magnitude binary. For an age $\sim300$ Myr the A and B components each have a mass of $64.6^{+0.8}_{-2.0}~M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$, and the b component has a mass of $11.2^{+9.7}_{-1.8}$, making VHS 1256-1257 only the third brown dwarf triple system. There exists some tension between the spectrophotometric distance of $17.2\pm2.6$ pc and the parallax distance of $12.7\pm1.0$ pc. At 12.7 pc VHS1256-1257 A and B would be the faintest known M7.5 objects, and are even faint outliers among M8 types. If the larger spectrophotmetric distance is more accurate than the parallax, then the mass of each component increases. In particular, the mass of the b component increases well above the deuterium burning limit to $\sim35~M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ and the mass of each binary component increases to $73^{+20}_{-17}~M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$. At 17.1 pc, the UVW kinematics of the system are consistent with membership in the AB~Dor moving group. The architecture of the system resembles a hierarchical stellar multiple suggesting it formed via an extension of the star-formation process to low masses. Continued astrometric monitoring will resolve this distance uncertainty and will provide dynamical masses for a new benchmark system., Comment: Accepted to ApJL

We present high-contrast Magellan adaptive optics (MagAO) images of HD 7449, a Sun-like star with one planet and a long-term radial velocity (RV) trend. We unambiguously detect the source of the long-term trend from 0.6-2.15 \microns ~at a separation of \about 0\fasec 54. We use the object's colors and spectral energy distribution to show that it is most likely an M4-M5 dwarf (mass \about 0.1-0.2 \msun) at the same distance as the primary and is therefore likely bound. We also present new RVs measured with the Magellan/MIKE and PFS spectrometers and compile these with archival data from CORALIE and HARPS. We use a new Markov chain Monte Carlo procedure to constrain both the mass ($> 0.17$ \msun ~at 99$\%$ confidence) and semimajor axis (\about 18 AU) of the M dwarf companion (HD 7449B). We also refine the parameters of the known massive planet (HD 7449Ab), finding that its minimum mass is $1.09^{+0.52}_{-0.19}$ \mj, its semimajor axis is $2.33^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$ AU, and its eccentricity is $0.8^{+0.08}_{-0.06}$. We use N-body simulations to constrain the eccentricity of HD 7449B to $\lesssim$ 0.5. The M dwarf may be inducing Kozai oscillations on the planet, explaining its high eccentricity. If this is the case and its orbit was initially circular, the mass of the planet would need to be $\lesssim$ 1.5 \mj. This demonstrates that strong constraints on known planets can be made using direct observations of otherwise undetectable long-period companions., Comment: Corrected planet mass error (7.8 Mj --> 1.09 Mj, in agreement with previous studies)

Young giant exoplanets are a unique laboratory for understanding cool, low-gravity atmospheres. A quintessential example is the massive extrasolar planet $\beta$ Pic b, which is 9 AU from and embedded in the debris disk of the young nearby A6V star $\beta$ Pictoris. We observed the system with first light of the Magellan Adaptive Optics (MagAO) system. In Paper I we presented the first CCD detection of this planet with MagAO+VisAO. Here we present four MagAO+Clio images of $\beta$ Pic b at 3.1 $\mu$m, 3.3 $\mu$m, $L^\prime$, and $M^\prime$, including the first observation in the fundamental CH$_4$ band. To remove systematic errors from the spectral energy distribution (SED), we re-calibrate the literature photometry and combine it with our own data, for a total of 22 independent measurements at 16 passbands from 0.99--4.8 $\mu$m. Atmosphere models demonstrate the planet is cloudy but are degenerate in effective temperature and radius. The measured SED now covers $>$80\% of the planet's energy, so we approach the bolometric luminosity empirically. We calculate the luminosity by extending the measured SED with a blackbody and integrating to find log($L_{bol}$/$L_{Sun}$) $= -3.78\pm0.03$. From our bolometric luminosity and an age of 23$\pm$3 Myr, hot-start evolutionary tracks give a mass of 12.7$\pm$0.3 $M_{Jup}$, radius of 1.45$\pm$0.02 $R_{Jup}$, and $T_{eff}$ of 1708$\pm$23 K (model-dependent errors not included). Our empirically-determined luminosity is in agreement with values from atmospheric models (typically $-3.8$ dex), but brighter than values from the field-dwarf bolometric correction (typically $-3.9$ dex), illustrating the limitations in comparing young exoplanets to old brown dwarfs., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. 27 pages, 22 figures, 19 tables

Binaries are typically excluded from direct imaging exoplanet surveys. However, the recent findings of Kepler and radial velocity programs show that planets can and do form in binary systems. Here, we suggest that visual binaries offer unique advantages for direct imaging. We show that Binary Differential Imaging (BDI), whereby two stars are imaged simultaneously at the same wavelength within the isoplanatic patch at high Strehl ratio, offers improved point spread function (PSF) subtraction that can result in increased sensitivity to planets close to each star. We demonstrate this by observing a young visual binary separated by 4\asec ~with MagAO/Clio-2 at 3.9 \microns, where the Strehl ratio is high, the isoplanatic patch is large, and giant planets are bright. Comparing BDI to angular differential imaging (ADI), we find that BDI's 5$\sigma$ contrast is \about 0.5 mags better than ADI's within \about 1\asec ~for the particular binary we observed. Because planets typically reside close to their host stars, BDI is a promising technique for discovering exoplanets in stellar systems that are often ignored. BDI is also 2-4$\times$ more efficient than ADI and classical reference PSF subtraction, since planets can be detected around both the target and PSF reference simultaneously. We are currently exploiting this technique in a new MagAO survey for giant planets in 140 young nearby visual binaries. We used the Magellan adaptive optics system to image the 11 Myr substellar companion 1RXS 1609 B at the bluest wavelengths to date (z' and Ys). Comparison with synthetic spectra yields a higher temperature than previous studies of $T_\mathrm{eff}=2000\pm100\mathrm{K}$ and significant dust extinction of $A_V=4.5^{+0.5}_{-0.7}$ mag. Mass estimates based on the DUSTY tracks gives 0.012-0.015 Msun, making the companion likely a low-mass brown dwarf surrounded by a dusty disk. Our study suggests that 1RXS 1609 B is one of the 25% of Upper Scorpius low-mass members harboring disks, and it may have formed like a star and not a planet out at 320 AU., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; accepted to ApJL

We report here the highest resolution near-IR imaging to date of the HD 141569A disc taken as part of the NICI Science Campaign. We recover 4 main features in the NICI images of the HD 141569 disc discovered in previous HST imaging: 1) an inner ring / spiral feature. Once deprojected, this feature does not appear circular. 2) an outer ring which is considerably brighter on the western side compared to the eastern side, but looks fairly circular in the deprojected image. 3) an additional arc-like feature between the inner and outer ring only evident on the east side. In the deprojected image, this feature appears to complete the circle of the west side inner ring and 4) an evacuated cavity from 175 AU inwards. Compared to the previous HST imaging with relatively large coronagraphic inner working angles (IWA), the NICI coronagraph allows imaging down to an IWA of 0.3". Thus, the inner edge of the inner ring/spiral feature is well resolved and we do not find any additional disc structures within 175 AU. We note some additional asymmetries in this system. Specifically, while the outer ring structure looks circular in this deprojection, the inner bright ring looks rather elliptical. This suggests that a single deprojection angle is not appropriate for this system and that there may be an offset in inclination between the two ring / spiral features. We present multi-epoch non-redundant masking observations of the T Cha transition disk, taken at the VLT and Magellan in H, Ks, and L' bands. T Cha is one of a small number of transition disks that host companion candidates discovered by high-resolution imaging techniques, with a putative companion at a position angle of 78 degrees, separation of 62 mas, and contrast at L' of 5.1 mag. We find comparable binary parameters in our re-reduction of the initial detection images, and similar parameters in the 2011 L', 2013 NaCo L', and 2013 NaCo Ks data sets. We find a close-in companion signal in the 2012 NaCo L' dataset that cannot be explained by orbital motion, and a non-detection in the 2013 MagAO/Clio2 L' data. However, Monte-carlo simulations show that the best fits to the 2012 NaCo and 2013 MagAO/Clio2 followup data may be consistent with noise. There is also a significant probability of false non-detections in both of these data sets. We discuss physical scenarios that could cause the best fits, and argue that previous companion and scattering explanations are inconsistent with the results of the much larger dataset presented here., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We used the Magellan adaptive optics (MagAO) system and its VisAO CCD camera to image the young low mass brown dwarf companion CT Chamaeleontis B for the first time at visible wavelengths. We detect it at r', i', z', and Ys. With our new photometry and Teff~2500 K derived from the shape its K-band spectrum, we find that CT Cha B has Av = 3.4+/-1.1 mag, and a mass of 14-24 Mj according to the DUSTY evolutionary tracks and its 1-5 Myr age. The overluminosity of our r' detection indicates that the companion has significant Halpha emission and a mass accretion rate ~6*10^-10 Msun/yr, similar to some substellar companions. Proper motion analysis shows that another point source within 2" of CT Cha A is not physical. This paper demonstrates how visible wavelength AO photometry (r', i', z', Ys) allows for a better estimate of extinction, luminosity, and mass accretion rate of young substellar companions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 6 figures

We present the first resolved near infrared imagery of the transition disk Oph IRS 48 (WLY 2-48), which was recently observed with ALMA to have a strongly asymmetric sub-millimeter flux distribution. H-band polarized intensity images show a $\sim$60AU radius scattered light cavity with two pronounced arcs of emission, one from Northeast to Southeast and one smaller, fainter and more distant arc in the Northwest. K-band scattered light imagery reveals a similar morphology, but with a clear third arc along the Southwestern rim of the disk cavity. This arc meets the Northwestern arc at nearly a right angle, revealing the presence of a spiral arm or local surface brightness deficit in the disk, and explaining the East-West brightness asymmetry in the H-band data. We also present 0.8-5.4$\mu$m IRTF SpeX spectra of this object, which allow us to constrain the spectral class to A0$\pm$1 and measure a low mass accretion rate of 10$^{-8.5}$M$_{\odot}$/yr, both consistent with previous estimates. We investigate a variety of reddening laws in order to fit the mutliwavelength SED of Oph IRS 48 and find a best fit consistent with a younger, higher luminosity star than previous estimates., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. 19 pages, 15 figures

We report the detection of a faint pointlike feature possibly related to ongoing planet-formation in the disk of the transition disk star HD 169142. The pointlike feature has a $\Delta$mag(L)$\sim$6.4, at a separation of $\sim$0.11" and PA$\sim$0$^{\circ}$. Given its lack of an H or K$_{S}$ counterpart despite its relative brightness, this candidate cannot be explained by purely photospheric emission and must be a disk feature heated by an as yet unknown source. Its extremely red colors make it highly unlikely to be a background object, but future multi-wavelength followup is necessary for confirmation and characterization of this feature., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters, see also Reggiani et al. 2014

We review astronomical results in the visible ({\lambda}<1{\mu}m) with adaptive optics. Other than a brief period in the early 1990s, there has been little astronomical science done in the visible with AO until recently. The most productive visible AO system to date is our 6.5m Magellan telescope AO system (MagAO). MagAO is an advanced Adaptive Secondary system at the Magellan 6.5m in Chile. This secondary has 585 actuators with < 1 msec response times (0.7 ms typically). We use a pyramid wavefront sensor. The relatively small actuator pitch (~23 cm/subap) allows moderate Strehls to be obtained in the visible (0.63-1.05 microns). We use a CCD AO science camera called "VisAO". On-sky long exposures (60s) achieve <30mas resolutions, 30% Strehls at 0.62 microns (r') with the VisAO camera in 0.5" seeing with bright R < 8 mag stars. These relatively high visible wavelength Strehls are made possible by our powerful combination of a next generation ASM and a Pyramid WFS with 378 controlled modes and 1000 Hz loop frequency. We'll review the key steps to having good performance in the visible and review the exciting new AO visible science opportunities and refereed publications in both broad-band (r,i,z,Y) and at Halpha for exoplanets, protoplanetary disks, young stars, and emission line jets. These examples highlight the power of visible AO to probe circumstellar regions/spatial resolutions that would otherwise require much larger diameter telescopes with classical infrared AO cameras., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Proc. One of the primary goals of exoplanet science is to find and characterize habitable planets, and direct imaging will play a key role in this effort. Though imaging a true Earth analog is likely out of reach from the ground, the coming generation of giant telescopes will find and characterize many planets in and near the habitable zones (HZs) of nearby stars. Radial velocity and transit searches indicate that such planets are common, but imaging them will require achieving extreme contrasts at very small angular separations, posing many challenges for adaptive optics (AO) system design. Giant planets in the HZ may even be within reach with the latest generation of high-contrast imagers for a handful of very nearby stars. Here we will review the definition of the HZ, and the characteristics of detectable planets there. We then review some of the ways that direct imaging in the HZ will be different from the typical exoplanet imaging survey today. Finally, we present preliminary results from our observations of the HZ of {\alpha} Centauri A with the Magellan AO system's VisAO and Clio2 cameras., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Proc. MagAO is the new adaptive optics system with visible-light and infrared science cameras, located on the 6.5-m Magellan "Clay" telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile. The instrument locks on natural guide stars (NGS) from 0$^\mathrm{th}$ to 16$^\mathrm{th}$ $R$-band magnitude, measures turbulence with a modulating pyramid wavefront sensor binnable from 28x28 to 7x7 subapertures, and uses a 585-actuator adaptive secondary mirror (ASM) to provide flat wavefronts to the two science cameras. MagAO is a mutated clone of the similar AO systems at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) at Mt. Graham, Arizona. The high-level AO loop controls up to 378 modes and operates at frame rates up to 1000 Hz. The instrument has two science cameras: VisAO operating from 0.5-1 $\mu$m and Clio2 operating from 1-5 $\mu$m. MagAO was installed in 2012 and successfully completed two commissioning runs in 2012-2013. In April 2014 we had our first science run that was open to the general Magellan community. Observers from Arizona, Carnegie, Australia, Harvard, MIT, Michigan, and Chile took observations in collaboration with the MagAO instrument team.
