Search

Symbiotic stars are binaries in which a cool and evolved star of luminosity class I-III accretes onto a smaller companion. However, direct accretion signatures like disc flickering and boundary layer X-rays are typically outshone or suppressed by the luminous giant, shell burning on the accreting white dwarf, and the illuminated wind nebula. We present a new way to find symbiotics that is less biased against directly-detectable accretion discs than methods based on narrow-band H$\alpha$ photometry or objective prism plate surveys. We identified outliers in SkyMapper survey photometry, using reconstructed uvg snapshot colours and rapid variability among the three exposures of each 20-minute SkyMapper Main Survey filter sequence, from a sample of 366,721 luminous red objects. We found that SkyMapper catalog colours of large-amplitude pulsating giants must be corrected for variability, and that flickering is detectable with only three data points. Our methods probed a different region of parameter space than a recent search for accreting-only symbiotics in the GALAH survey, while being surprisingly concordant with another survey's infrared detection algorithm. We discovered 12 new symbiotics, including four with optical accretion disc flickering. Two of the optical flickerers exhibited boundary-layer hard X-rays. We also identified 10 symbiotic candidates, and discovered likely optical flickering in the known symbiotic V1044 Cen (CD-36 8436). We conclude that at least 20% of the true population of symbiotics exhibit detectable optical flickering from the inner accretion disc, the majority of which do not meet the H$\alpha$ detection thresholds used to find symbiotics in typical narrow-band surveys., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 34 pages, 17 figures (from 20 image files), 5 tables. Optical circular polarization observations can directly test the particle composition in black holes jets. Here we report on the first observations of the BL Lac type object S4 0954+65 in high linear polarized states. While no circular polarization was detected, we were able to place upper limits of <0.5% at the 99.7% confidence. Using a simple model and our novel optical circular polarization observations we can constrain the allowed parameter space for the magnetic field strength and composition of the emitting particles. Our results favor models that require magnetic field strengths of only a few Gauss and models where the jet composition is dominated by electron-positron pairs. We present multi-wavelength temporal and spectral characteristics of a magnetic cataclysmic variable (MCV) Swift J0503.7-2819, using far ultraviolet (FUV) and X-ray data from AstroSat, supplemented with optical data from the Southern African Large Telescope and X-ray data from the XMM-Newton and Swift observatories. The X-ray modulations at 4897.6657 s and 3932.0355 s are interpreted as the orbital ($P_{\Omega}$) and spin ($P_{\omega}$) period, respectively, and are consistent with prior reports. With a spin-orbit period ratio of 0.8 and $P_{\Omega}$ falling below the period gap (2-3 hrs) of CVs, Swift J0503.7-2819 would be the newest addition to the growing population of nearly synchronous MCVs, which we call EX Hya-like systems. Hard X-ray luminosity of $<$ $2.5\times10^{32} erg s^{-1}$, as measured with the Swift Burst Alert Telescope, identifies it to be a low-luminosity intermediate polar, similar to other EX Hya-like systems. The phenomenology of the light curves and the spectral characteristics rule out a purely disc-fed/stream-fed model and instead reveal the presence of complex accretion structures around the white dwarf. We propose a ring-like accretion flow, akin to EX Hya, using period ratio, stability arguments, and observational features. An attempt is made to differentiate between the asynchronous polar/nearly-synchronous intermediate polar nature of Swift J0503.7-2819. Further, we note that with the advent of sensitive surveys, a growing population of MCVs that exhibit characteristics of both polars and intermediate polars is beginning to be identified, likely forming a genealogical link between the two conventional classes of MCVs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 17 Pages, 13 Figures

Here, we present the results of our multi-wavelength campaign aimed at classifying \textit{Swift} J170800$-$402551.8 as part of the \textit{Swift} Deep Galactic Plane Survey (DGPS). We utilized Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations with \textit{Swift}, \textit{NICER}, \textit{XMM-Newton}, \textit{NuSTAR}, and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), as well as multi-wavelength archival observations from \textit{Gaia}, VPHAS, and VVV. The source displays a periodicity of 784 s in our \textit{XMM-Newton} observation. The X-ray spectrum (\textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{NuSTAR}) can be described by thermal bremsstrahlung radiation with a temperature of $kT$\,$\approx$\,$30$ keV. The phase-folded X-ray lightcurve displays a double-peaked, energy-dependent pulse-profile. We used \textit{Chandra} to precisely localize the source, allowing us to identify and study the multi-wavelength counterpart. Spectroscopy with SALT identified a Balmer H$\alpha$ line, and potential HeI lines, from the optical counterpart. The faintness of the counterpart ($r$\,$\approx$\,$21$ AB mag) favors a low-mass donor star. Based on these criteria, we classify \textit{Swift} J170800$-$402551.8 as a candidate intermediate polar cataclysmic variable, where the spin period of the white dwarf is 784 s., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

We present the results of our X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical follow-up campaigns of 1RXS J165424.6-433758, an X-ray source detected with the \textit{Swift} Deep Galactic Plane Survey (DGPS). The source X-ray spectrum (\textit{Swift} and \textit{NuSTAR}) is described by thermal bremsstrahlung radiation with a temperature of $kT=10.1\pm1.2$ keV, yielding an X-ray ($0.3-10$ keV) luminosity $L_X=(6.5\pm0.8)\times10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at a \textit{Gaia} distance of 460 pc. Spectroscopy with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) revealed a flat continuum dominated by emission features, demonstrating an inverse Balmer decrement, the $\lambda4640$ Bowen blend, almost a dozen HeI lines, and HeII $\lambda4541$, $\lambda4686$ and $\lambda 5411$. Our high-speed photometry demonstrates a preponderance of flickering and flaring episodes, and revealed the orbital period of the system, $P_\textrm{orb}=2.87$ hr, which fell well within the cataclysmic variable (CV) period gap between $2-3$ hr. Polarization offers a unique view in the physical processes of astrophysical jets. We report on optical circular polarization observations of two famous blazars, namely 3C 279 and PKS 1510-089, at high linearly polarized states. This is the first time PKS 1510-089 is observed in optical circular polarization. While only upper limits can be extracted from our observing campaign, the non-detection of optical circular polarization allows us to provide meaningful constraints on their magnetic field strength and jet composition. We present our $AstroSat$ soft X-ray observations of a compact binary system, AR Sco, and analysis of its X-ray observations with $Chandra$ that were taken only about a week before the $AstroSat$ observations. An analysis of the soft X-ray ($0.3-2.0$ keV) data limits the modulation of the spin, orbital, or beat periods to less than 0.03 counts s$^{-1}$ or $<$10\% of the average count rate. The X-ray flux obtained from both observatories is found to be almost identical (within a few percent) in flux, and about 30\% lower than reported from the nine months older observations with $XMM-Newton$. A two-temperature thermal plasma model with the same spectral parameters fit $Chandra$ and $AstroSat$ data very well, and requires very little absorption in the line of sight to the source. The low-temperature component has the same temperature ($\sim$1 keV) as reported earlier, but the high-temperature component has a lower temperature of 5.0$^{+0.8}_{-0.7}$ keV as compared to 8.0 keV measured earlier, however, the difference is not statistically significant., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, to be published in the Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy

We present an optical, X-ray, and $\gamma$-ray study of 1SXPS J042749.2-670434, an eclipsing X-ray binary which has an associated $\gamma$-ray counterpart, 4FGL J0427.8-6704. This association has led to the source being classified as a transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP) in an accreting state. We analyse 10.5 years of Fermi LAT data, and detect a $\gamma$-ray eclipse at the same phase as optical and X-ray eclipses at the >5$\sigma$ level, a significant improvement on the 2.8$\sigma$level of the previous detection. The confirmation of this eclipse solidifies the association between the X-ray source and the $\gamma$-ray source, strengthening the tMSP classification. However, analysis of several optical data sets and an X-ray observation do not reveal a change in the source's median brightness over long timescales or a bi-modality on short timescales. Instead, the light curve is dominated by flickering which has a correlation time of 2.6 min alongside a potential quasi-periodic oscillation at $\sim$21 min. The mass of the primary and secondary star are constrained to be $M_1=1.43^{+0.33}_{-0.19}$ M$_{\odot}$ and $M_2=0.3^{+0.17}_{-0.12}$ M$_{\odot}$ through modelling of the optical light curve. While this is still consistent with a white dwarf primary, we favour the transitional millisecond pulsar in a low accretion state classification due to the significance of the $\gamma$-ray eclipse detection., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We report the discovery of the first transient with MeerKAT, MKT J170456.2$-$482100, discovered in ThunderKAT images of the low mass X-ray binary GX339$-$4. MKT J170456.2$-$482100 is variable in the radio, reaching a maximum flux density of $0.71\pm0.11\,\mathrm{mJy}$ on 2019 Oct 12, and is undetected in 15 out of 48 ThunderKAT epochs. MKT J170456.2$-$482100 is coincident with the chromospherically active K-type sub-giant TYC 8332-2529-1, and $\sim18\,\mathrm{years}$ of archival optical photometry of the star shows that it varies with a period of $21.25\pm0.04\,\mathrm{days}$. The shape and phase of the optical light curve changes over time, and we detect both X-ray and UV emission at the position of MKT J170456.2$-$482100, which may indicate that TYC 8332-2529-1 has large star spots. Spectroscopic analysis shows that TYC 8332-2529-1 is in a binary, and has a line-of-sight radial velocity amplitude of $43\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$. We also observe a spectral feature in anti-phase with the K-type sub-giant, with a line-of-sight radial velocity amplitude of $\sim12\pm10\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$, whose origins cannot currently be explained. The discovery of the first electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave signal has generated follow-up observations by over 50 facilities world-wide, ushering in the new era of multi-messenger astronomy. In this paper, we present follow-up observations of the gravitational wave event GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart SSS17a/DLT17ck (IAU label AT2017gfo) by 14 Australian telescopes and partner observatories as part of Australian-based and Australian-led research programs. We report early- to late-time multi-wavelength observations, including optical imaging and spectroscopy, mid-infrared imaging, radio imaging, and searches for fast radio bursts. Our optical spectra reveal that the transient source afterglow cooled from approximately 6400K to 2100K over a 7-day period and produced no significant optical emission lines. The spectral profiles, cooling rate, and photometric light curves are consistent with the expected outburst and subsequent processes of a binary neutron star merger. Star formation in the host galaxy probably ceased at least a Gyr ago, although there is evidence for a galaxy merger. Binary pulsars with short (100 Myr) decay times are therefore unlikely progenitors, but pulsars like PSR B1534+12 with its 2.7 Gyr coalescence time could produce such a merger. The displacement (about 2.2 kpc) of the binary star system from the centre of the main galaxy is not unusual for stars in the host galaxy or stars originating in the merging galaxy, and therefore any constraints on the kick velocity imparted to the progenitor are poor., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, 15 tables

The variable star AR Sco was recently discovered to pulse in brightness every 1.97 min from ultraviolet wavelengths into the radio regime. The system is composed of a cool, low-mass star in a tight, 3.55 hr orbit with a more massive white dwarf. Here we report new optical observations of AR Sco that show strong linear polarization (up to 40%) which varies strongly and periodically on both the spin period of the white dwarf and the beat period between the spin and orbital period, as well as low level (< a few %) circular polarization. These observations support the notion that, similar to neutron star pulsars, the pulsed luminosity of AR Sco is powered by the spin-down of the rapidly-rotating white dwarf which is highly magnetised (up to 500 MG). The morphology of the modulated linear polarization is similar to that seen in the Crab pulsar, albeit with a more complex waveform owing to the presence of two periodic signals of similar frequency. Magnetic interactions between the two component stars, coupled with synchrotron radiation from the white dwarf, power the observed polarized and non-polarized emission. We present the results of UBVRI polarimetry of the TeV gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057 obtained on 2015 March 24 (JD 2457106) and 2015 December 12 (JD 2457369). The detected polarisation values of HESS J0632+057, just after periastron passage (March 24), are higher than all previously published values (p(V) ~ 4.2%) and the position angle (theta ~ 171-172 degrees) is also different by ~6-10 degrees from previously published values. The data obtained just before the subsequent periastron passage (December 12) show statistically lower polarisation in all photometric bands (p(V) ~ 3.9%) and a different position angle theta ~ 167-168 degrees. From observations of a nearby field star, the interstellar component of the measured polarisation was estimated as p_is(V) ~ 0.65% and theta_is ~ 153 degrees. This estimate was used with the previous "V"-band estimation by "field-stars method" (p(V) ~ 2% and theta_is ~ 165 degrees) of Yudin (2014) to identify the wavelength dependence of the intrinsic polarisation in HESS J0632+057. It was found that after subtraction of the interstellar component (for both p_is estimates), the wavelength dependence of the intrinsic polarisation in HESS J0632+057 is essentially flat. We propose that the formation of an additional source of polarisation or some perturbation of circumstellar material at this orbital phase can explain the changes in the level of polarisation in HESS J0632+057 close to periastron passage., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS on 2016 October 14

Evidence for the presence of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the optical polarization of the blazar PKS 2155-304, during a period of enhanced gamma-ray brightness, is presented. The periodogram of the polarized flux revealed the existence of a prominent peak at $T\sim 13$ min, detected at >99.7% significance, and $T\sim 30$ min, which was nominally significant at >99%. The Advanced LIGO observatory recently reported the first direct detection of gravitational waves predicted by Einstein (1916). We report on the first optical observations of the Gravitational Wave (GW) source GW150914 error region with the Global MASTER Robotic Net. We detected several optical transients, which proved to be unconnected with the GW event. Our result is consistent with the assumption that gravitational waves were produced by a binary black hole merger.
