We present a detailed comparative study of the arcs and fragmented ring-like features in the haloes of the planetary nebulae (PNe) NGC 6543, NGC 7009, and NGC 7027 and the spiral pattern around the carbon star AFGL 3068 using high-quality multi-epoch HST images. This comparison allows us to investigate the connection and possible evolution between the regular patterns surrounding AGB stars and the irregular concentric patterns around PNe. The radial proper motion of these features, ~15 km/s, are found to be consistent with the AGB wind and their linear sizes and inter-lapse times (500-1900 yr) also agree with those found around AGB stars, suggesting a common origin. We find evidence using radiative-hydrodynamic simulations that regular patterns produced at the end of the AGB phase become highly distorted by their interactions with the expanding PN and the anisotropic illumination and ionization patterns caused by shadow instabilities. These processes will disrupt the regular (mostly spiral) patterns around AGB stars, plausibly becoming the arcs and fragmented rings observed in the haloes of PNe., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We develop a physical framework for interpreting high-resolution images of pre planetary nebule ("prePNe") with pairs of candle shaped lobes. We use hydrodynamical models to infer the historical properties of the flows injected from the nucleus that shape the lobes into standard forms. First, we find a suitable set of parameters of a fast, collimated, tapered flow that is actively reshaped by an exterior slow AGB wind and that nicely fits the basic shape, kinematics, mass, and momenta of this class of prePNe. Next we vary the most influential parameters of this "baseline" model-such as density, speed, and geometry-to see how changes in the flow parameters affect the nebular observables after 900y. Several generic conlusions emerge, such as the injected flows that create the hollow candle-shaped lobes must be light, "tapered", and injected considerably faster than the lobe expansion speed. Multi-polar and starfish prePNe probably evolve from wide angle flows in which thin-shell instabilites corrugate their leading edges. We show how the common linear relationship of Doppler shift and position along the lobe is a robust outcome the interaction of tapered diverging streamlines with the lobes' curved walls. Finally we probe how magnetic fields affect the basline model by adding a toroidal field to the injected baseline flow. Examples of prePNe and PNe that may have been magnetically shaped are listed. We conclude that the light, field-free, tapered baseline flow model is an successful and universal pardigm for unravelling the histories of lobe formation in prePNe., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures

The primary goal of this paper is to make a direct comparison between the measured and model-predicted abundances of He, C and N in a sample of 35 well-observed Galactic planetary nebulae (PN). All observations, data reductions, and abundance determinations were performed in house to ensure maximum homogeneity. Progenitor star masses (M < 4M_sun) were inferred using two published sets of post-AGB model tracks and L and T_eff values. We conclude the following: 1) the mean values of N/O across the progenitor mass range exceeds the solar value, indicating significant N enrichment in the majority of our objects; 2) the onset of hot bottom burning appears to begin around 2 solar masses, i.e., lower than ~5 M_sun implied by theory; 3) most of our objects show a clear He enrichment, as expected from dredge-up episodes; 4) the average sample C/O value is 1.23, consistent with the effects of third dredge-up; and 5) model grids used to compare to observations successfully span the distribution over metallicity space of all C/O and many He/H data points but mostly fail to do so in the case of N/O. The evident enrichment of N in PN and the general discrepancy between the observed and model-predicted N/O abundance ratios signal the need for extra-mixing as an effect of rotation and/or thermohaline mixing in the models. The goal of the present study is twofold. First, we employ new HST/STIS spectra and photoionization modeling techniques to determine the progenitor masses of eight planetary nebulae (IC 2165, IC 3568, NGC 2440, NGC 3242, NGC 5315, NGC 5882, NGC 7662 and PB6). Second, for the first time we are able to compare each object's observed nebular abundances of helium, carbon and nitrogen with abundance predictions of these same elements by a stellar model that is consistent with each object's progenitor mass. Important results include the following: 1) the mass range of our objects' central stars matches well with the mass distribution of other PN central stars and white dwarfs; 2) He/H is above solar in all of our objects, in most cases likely due to the predicted effects of first dredge up; 3) most of our objects show negligible C enrichment, probably because their low masses preclude 3rd dredge-up; 4) C/O versus O/H for our objects appears to be inversely correlated, perhaps consistent with the conclusion of theorists that the extent of atmospheric carbon enrichment from first dredge-up is sensitive to a parameter whose value increases as metallicity declines; 5) stellar model predictions of nebular C and N enrichment are consistent with observed abundances for progenitor star masses <=1.5 Msun. We present X-ray spectral analysis of 20 point-like X-ray sources detected in Chandra Planetary Nebula Survey (ChanPlaNS) observations of 59 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the solar neighborhood. Most of these 20 detections are associated with luminous central stars within relatively young, compact nebulae. The vast majority of these point-like X-ray-emitting sources at PN cores display relatively "hard" ($\geq0.5$~keV) X-ray emission components that are unlikely to be due to photospheric emission from the hot central stars (CSPN). Instead, we demonstrate that these sources are well modeled by optically-thin thermal plasmas. From the plasma properties, we identify two classes of CSPN X-ray emission: (1) high-temperature plasmas with X-ray luminosities, $L_{\rm X}$, that appear uncorrelated with the CSPN bolometric luminosity, $L_{\rm bol}$; and (2) lower-temperature plasmas with $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm bol}\sim10^{-7}$. We suggest these two classes correspond to the physical processes of magnetically active binary companions and self-shocking stellar winds, respectively. In many cases this conclusion is supported by corroborative multiwavelength evidence for the wind and binary properties of the PN central stars. We report deep long-slit emission-line spectra, the line flux ratios, and Doppler profile shapes of various bright optical lines. The low-ionization lines (primarily [N I], [O I], [S II], and [N II]) originate in shocked knots, as reported by many previous observers. Dust-scattered lines of higher ionization are seen throughout the lobes but do not peak in the knots. Our analysis of these line profiles and the readily discernible stellar continuum shows that (1) the central star is an active symbiotic (whose spectrum resembles the central stars of highly bipolar and young PNe such as M2-9 and Hen2-437) whose compact companion shows a WC8-type spectrum, (2) extended nebular lines of [O III] and He I originate in the heavily obscured nuclear H II region, and (3) the Balmer lines observed throughout the lobes are dominated by reflected H{\alpha} emission from the symbiotic star. Comparing our line ratios with those observed historically shows that (1) the [O III]/H\b{eta} and He I/H\b{eta} ratios have been steadily rising by large amounts throughout the nebula, (2) the H{\alpha}/H\b{eta} ratio is steadily decreasing while H{\gamma}/H\b{eta} remains nearly constant, and (3) the low-ionization line ratios formed in the shocked knots have been in decline in different ways at various locations. We present results from the most recent set of observations obtained as part of the Chandra X-ray observatory Planetary Nebula Survey (ChanPlaNS), the first comprehensive X-ray survey of planetary nebulae (PNe) in the solar neighborhood (i.e., within ~1.5 kpc of the Sun). The survey is designed to place constraints on the frequency of appearance and range of X-ray spectral characteristics of X-ray-emitting PN central stars and the evolutionary timescales of wind-shock-heated bubbles within PNe. ChanPlaNS began with a combined Cycle 12 and archive Chandra survey of 35 PNe. ChanPlaNS continued via a Chandra Cycle 14 Large Program which targeted all (24) remaining known compact (R_neb <~ 0.4 pc), young PNe that lie within ~1.5 kpc. Results from these Cycle 14 observations include first-time X-ray detections of hot bubbles within NGC 1501, 3918, 6153, and 6369, and point sources in HbDs 1, NGC 6337, and Sp 1. The addition of the Cycle 14 results brings the overall ChanPlaNS diffuse X-ray detection rate to ~27% and the point source detection rate to ~36%. It has become clearer that diffuse X-ray emission is associated with young (<~5x10^3 yr), and likewise compact (R_neb<~0.15 pc), PNe with closed structures and high central electron densities (n_e>~1000 cm^-3), and rarely associated with PNe that show H_2 emission and/or pronounced butterfly structures. Hb 5 is one such exception of a PN with a butterfly structure that hosts diffuse X-ray emission. Additionally, of the five new diffuse X-ray detections, two host [WR]-type CSPNe, NGC 1501 and NGC 6369, supporting the hypothesis that PNe with central stars of [WR]-type are likely to display diffuse X-ray emission., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present an overview of the initial results from the Chandra Planetary Nebula Survey (ChanPlaNS), the first systematic (volume-limited) Chandra X-ray Observatory survey of planetary nebulae (PNe) in the solar neighborhood. The first phase of ChanPlaNS targeted 21 mostly high-excitation PNe within ~1.5 kpc of Earth, yielding 4 detections of diffuse X-ray emission and 9 detections of X-ray-luminous point sources at the central stars (CSPNe) of these objects. Combining these results with those obtained from Chandra archival data for all (14) other PNe within ~1.5 kpc that have been observed to date, we find an overall X-ray detection rate of ~70%. Roughly 50% of the PNe observed by Chandra harbor X-ray-luminous CSPNe, while soft, diffuse X-ray emission tracing shocks formed by energetic wind collisions is detected in ~30%; five objects display both diffuse and point-like emission components. The presence of X-ray sources appears correlated with PN density structure, in that molecule-poor, elliptical nebulae are more likely to display X-ray emission (either point-like or diffuse) than molecule-rich, bipolar or Ring-like nebulae. All but one of the X-ray point sources detected at CSPNe display X-ray spectra that are harder than expected from hot (~100 kK) central star photospheres, possibly indicating a high frequency of binary companions to CSPNe. Other potential explanations include self-shocking winds or PN mass fallback. Most PNe detected as diffuse X-ray sources are elliptical nebulae that display a nested shell/halo structure and bright ansae; the diffuse X-ray emission regions are confined within inner, sharp-rimmed shells. All sample PNe that display diffuse X-ray emission have inner shell dynamical ages <~5x10^3 yr, placing firm constraints on the timescale for strong shocks due to wind interactions in PNe., Comment: 41 pages, 6 figures; submitted to the Astronomical Journal

We perform near ultraviolet ACS prism spectroscopy of 11 Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) planetary nebulae (PNe) with the main aim of deriving the abundance of carbon. The analysis of the ACS spectra provide reliable atomic carbon abundances for all but a couple of our targets; ionic C^(2+) abundances are calculated for all target PNe. With the present paper we more than double the number of SMC PNe with known carbon abundances, providing a good database to study the elemental evolution in low- and intermediate-mass stars at low metallicity. We study carbon abundances of Magellanic Cloud PNe in the framework of stellar evolution models and the elemental yields. Constraining SMC and LMC stellar evolutionary models is now possible with the present data, through the comparison of the final yields calculated and the CNO abundances observed. We found that SMC PNe are almost exclusively carbon rich, and that for the most part they have not undergone the hot-bottom burning phase, contrary to half of the studied LMC PNe. The yields from stellar evolutionary models with LMC and SMC metallicities broadly agree with the observations. In particular, evolutionary yields for M$_{\rm to}<3.5 {\rm M}_{\odot}$ well encompass the abundances of round and elliptical PNe in the SMC. We found that the carbon emission lines are major coolants for SMC PNe, more so than in their LMC counterparts, indicating that metallicity has an effect on the physics of PNe, as predicted by Stanghellini et al.
