Search

We present photometric and kinematic analysis of an intermediate age open cluster NGC 1027 using $UBV(RI)_c$ and Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) data. Structural and fundamental parameters such as cluster center, cluster extent, reddening, age and distance are estimated in this study. Cluster center is found about 2 arcmin away from the center reported earlier. Radius has been estimated to be about 8.00 arcmin(2.65pc). Using proper motion Gaia EDR3 data, membership probabilities has been derived for the stars in the region of cluster radius. We find mean proper motion of the cluster to be $\sim$(-0.84, 2.04) mas yr$^{-1}$ in (RA, DEC). We find 217 most probable (P$_\mu>$ 70\%) cluster members with mean parallax 0.892 $\pm$ 0.088 mas. Out of these, 160 members have counterparts in our optical observations. Few stars having P$_\mu>$ 70\% are found out of the cluster radius showing imprints of dynamical evolution. The color-color and color-magnitude diagrams for the cluster members found within 8.00 arcmin have been constructed using $UBV(RI)_c$ photometry and Gaia EDR3 data. This yields a reddening E($B$-$V$) $\sim$ 0.36 mag, age $\sim$ 130 Myr and distance $\sim$ 1.14 kpc. The mass function slope in the cluster region is $\Gamma$ $\sim$ -1.46 $\pm$ 0.15, which is similar to other Galactic open clusters. The dynamical study shows lack of faint stars in its inner region leading to mass segregation effect. A comparison of dynamical age with cluster age indicates that NGC 1027 is a dynamically relaxed cluster suggesting that mass segregation may be imprint of its dynamical relaxation.

We have carried out a long term infrared and X-ray investigation of the colliding wind binary WR 125 (WC7+O9III). The source was monitored using AstroSat-Soft X-ray Telescope and TIRCAM2 mounted at the back of 3.6 m Devasthal Optical Telescope. WR 125 appeared brighter in near infra-red K-band during the years 2017-2021 which is attributed to another episode of dust formation similar to the one reported during the likely periastron passage at the beginning of the 1990s. This is further supported by enhanced emission observed in W1 and W2 bands of WISE from 2018-19. By combining archival X-ray data sets with our new measurements, long-term variations have been noticed. The source reaches a lower emission state in June 2020 (close to the recent infrared maximum) which could be due to enhanced absorption of X-rays produced in the colliding wind region by the WC stellar wind close to the periastron in an eccentric orbit. The time interval between the previous and latest X-ray low states may indicate an orbital period of 28-29 years, in fair agreement with the recurrence time of episodic dust production. We also discuss published radio measurements in the context of a common picture based on a long period binary scenario. High resolution infrared imaging observations of the young Planetary Nebulae NGC 7027 and BD +303639, taken with the newly installed TIFR Infrared Camera-II (TIRCAM2) on 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT), ARIES, Nainital, are being reported. The images are acquired in J, H, K, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and narrow-band L (nbL) filters. The observations show emission from warm dust and PAHs in the circumstellar shells. The imaging of the two objects are among the first observations in PAH and nbL bands using TIRCAM2 on DOT. The NGC 7027 images in all bands show similar elliptical morphology with ~6".7 and ~4".5 semi-major and semi-minor axes. Considering size up to 10% of peak value the nebula extends upto 8" from the central star revealing a multipolar evolution. The relatively cooler BD +303639 shows a rectangular-ring shaped nebula. In J and H bands it shows an angular diameter of ~8", while a smaller ~6".9 size is observed in K, PAH and nbL bands. The 3.28 micron emission indicates presence of PAHs at about 6000 and 5000 AU from the central stars in NGC 7027 and BD +303639 respectively. Analysis suggests domination of neutral PAHs in BD+303639, while in NGC 7027 there is higher ionization and more processed PAH population., Comment: 8 Figures, 5 Tables accepted in J of Astronomy and Astrophysics

This work presents the first long-term photometric variability survey of the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 559. Time-series V band photometric observations on 40 nights taken over more than three years with three different telescopes are analyzed to search for variable stars in the cluster. We investigate the data for the periodicity analysis and reveal 70 variable stars including 67 periodic variables in the target field, all of them are newly discovered. The membership analysis of the periodic variables reveal that 30 of them belong to the cluster and remaining 37 are identified as field variables. Out of the 67 periodic variables, 48 are short-period (P<1 day) variables and 19 are long-period (P>1 day) variables. The variable stars have periodicity between 3 hours to 41 days and their brightness ranges from V = 10.9 to 19.3 mag. The periodic variables belonging to the cluster are then classified into different variability types on the basis of observational properties such as shape of the light curves, periods, amplitudes, as well as their positions in the Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram. As a result, we identify one Algol type eclipsing binary, one possible blue straggler star, 3 slowly pulsating B type stars, 5 rotational variables, 11 non-pulsating variables, 2 FKCOM variables and remaining 7 are characterized as miscellaneous variables. We also identify three Eclipsing Binary stars (EBs) belonging to the field star population. We present a comprehensive photometric analysis of a young open cluster NGC 1960 (M36) along with the long-term variability study of this cluster. Based on the kinematic data of Gaia DR2, the membership probabilities of 3871 stars are ascertained in the cluster field among which 262 stars are found to be cluster members. Considering the kinematic and trigonometric measurements of the cluster members, we estimate a mean cluster parallax of 0.86+/-0.05 mas and mean proper motions of mu_RA = -0.143+/-0.008 mas/yr, mu_Dec = -3.395+/-0.008 mas/yr. We obtain basic parameters of the cluster such as E(B-V) = 0.24+/-0.02 mag, log(Age/yr)=7.44+/-0.02, and distance = 1.17+/-0.06 kpc. The mass function slope in the cluster for the stars in the mass range of 0.72-7.32 M_solar is found to be \gamma = -1.26+/-0.19. We find that mass segregation is still taking place in the cluster which is yet to be dynamically relaxed. This work also presents first high-precision variability survey in the central 13'x13' among which 72 are periodic variables. Among them, 59 are short-period (P<1 day)and 13 are long-period (P>1 day). The variable stars have V magnitudes ranging between 9.1 to 19.4 mag and periods between 41 minutes to 10.74 days. On the basis of their locations in the H-R diagram, periods and characteristic light curves, the 20 periodic variables belong to the cluster. We present the photometry and spectroscopy of SN 2015an, a Type II Supernova (SN) in IC 2367. The recombination phase of the SN lasts up to $\sim$120 d, with a decline rate of 1.24 mag/100d, higher than the typical SNe IIP. The SN exhibits bluer colours than most SNe II, indicating higher ejecta temperatures. The absolute $V$-band magnitude of SN 2015an at 50 d is $-$16.83$\pm$0.04 mag, pretty typical for SNe II. However, the $^{56}$Ni mass yield, estimated from the tail $V$-band light curve to be 0.021$\pm$0.010 M$_\odot$, is comparatively low. The spectral properties of SN 2015an are atypical, with low H$\alpha$ expansion velocity and presence of high velocity component of H$\alpha$ at early phases. Moreover, the continuum exhibits excess blue flux up to $\sim$50 d, which is interpreted as a progenitor metallicity effect. The high velocity feature indicates ejecta-circumstellar material interaction at early phases. The semi-analytical modelling of the bolometric light curve yields a total ejected mass of $\sim$12 M$_\odot$, a pre-supernova radius of $\sim$388~R$_\odot$ and explosion energy of $\sim$1.8 foe., Comment: 15 Pages, 16 Figures, 8 Tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 2019 September 20

We present results of a search for variable stars in a region of the globular cluster NGC 4147 based on photometric observations with 4k x 4k CCD imager mounted at the axial port of the recently installed 3.6 m Devasthal optical telescope at Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences, Nainital, India. We performed time series photometry of NGC 4147 in V and R bands, and identified 42 periodic variables in the region of NGC 4147, 28 of which have been detected for the first time. Seventeen variable stars are located within the half light radius $\lesssim$ 0.48 arcmin, of which 10 stars are newly identified variables. Two of 10 variables are located within the core radius $\lesssim$ 0.09 arcmin. Based on the location in the $V/(V-R)$ colour magnitude diagram and variability characteristics, 7, 8, 5 and 1 newly identified probable member variables are classified as RRc, EA/E, EW and SX Phe, respectively. The metallicity of NGC 4147 estimated from light curves of RRab and RRc stars with the help of Fourier decomposition is found to be characteristics of Oosterhoff II. MASTER OT J120451.50+265946.6 (M12045), discovered by the MASTER Global Robotic Net, is a Type Ib supernova (SN) that exploded in NGC 4080. We present the {\it BVRI} photometric and spectroscopic observations upto $\sim$250 days since $B_{max}$. At the time of discovery the SN was a few weeks past maximum light and our observations capture the linearly declining light curve phase. M12045 declines faster as compared to SNe 1999dn and 2009jf at comparable epochs. Rigorous spectroscopic monitoring reveals that M12045 is a normal Type Ib SN. The analysis of the nebular phase spectra indicates that $\sim$ 0.90 M$_\odot$ of O is ejected in the explosion. The line ratio of [\ion{O}{I}] and [\ion{Ca}{II}] in the nebular phase supports a massive WR progenitor with main sequence mass of $\sim$ 20 M$_\odot$., Comment: 16 pages, 6 tables, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results of the photometric (from 3 to 509 days past explosion) and spectroscopic (up to 230 days past explosion) monitoring campaign of the He-rich Type IIb supernova (SN) 2015as. The {\it (B-V)} colour evolution of SN 2015as closely resemble those of SN 2008ax, suggesting that SN 2015as belongs to the SN IIb subgroup that does not show the early, short-duration photometric peak. The light curve of SN 2015as reaches the $B$-band maximum about 22 days after the explosion, at an absolute magnitude of -16.82 $\pm$ 0.18 mag. At $\sim$ 75 days after the explosion, its spectrum transitions from that of a SN II to a SN Ib. P~Cygni features due to He I lines appear at around 30 days after explosion, indicating that the progenitor of SN 2015as was partially stripped. For SN~2015as, we estimate a $^{56}$Ni mass of $\sim$ 0.08 M$_{\odot}$ and ejecta mass of 1.1--2.2 M$_{\odot}$, which are similar to the values inferred for SN 2008ax. The quasi bolometric analytical light curve modelling suggests that the progenitor of SN 2015as has a modest mass ($\sim$ 0.1 M$_{\odot}$), a nearly-compact ($\sim$ 0.05$\times$10$^{13}$ cm) H envelope on top of a dense, compact ($\sim$ 2$\times$10$^{11}$ cm) and a more massive ($\sim$ 1.2 M$_{\odot}$) He core. The analysis of the nebular phase spectra indicates that $\sim$ 0.44 M$_{\odot}$ of O is ejected in the explosion. The intensity ratio of the [Ca II]/[O I] nebular lines favours either a main sequence progenitor mass of $\sim$ 15 M$_{\odot}$ or a Wolf Rayet star of 20 M$_{\odot}$., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, 10 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 16 February, 2018

We present an analysis of seven intense X-ray flares observed from six stars (LAV 796, LAV 1174, SHM2002 3734, 2MASS 02191082+5707324, V553 Car, V557 Car) for the first time. These stars are located in the region of young open star clusters NGC 869 and IC 2602. These flares detected in the XMM-Newton data show a rapid rise (10-40 minutes) and a slow decay (20-90 minutes). The X-ray luminosities during the flares in the energy band 0.3-7.5 keV are in the range of $10^{29.9}$ to $10^{31.7}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The strongest flare was observed with the ratio $\sim 13$ for count rates at peak of the flare to the quiescent intensity. The maximum temperature during the flares has been found to be $\sim$100 MK. The semi loop lengths for the flaring loops are estimated to be of the order of $\rm{10^{10}}$ cm. The physical parameters of the flaring structure, the peak density, pressure, and minimum magnetic field required to confine the plasma have been derived and found to be consistent with flares from pre-main sequence stars in the Orion and the Taurus-Auriga-Perseus region., Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables (Accepted for publication in Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy)

We present a detailed investigation of X-ray source contents of eight young open clusters with ages between 4 to 46 Myr using archival X-ray data from XMM-Newton. The probable cluster memberships of the X-ray sources have been established on the basis of multi-wavelength archival data, and samples of 152 pre-main sequence (PMS) low mass (< 2 M_\odot), 36 intermediate mass (2 - 10 M_\odot) and 16 massive (> 10 M_\odot) stars have been generated. X-ray spectral analyses of high mass stars reveal the presence of high temperature plasma with temperature <2 keV, and mean L_X/L_{bol} of 10^{-6.9}. In the case of PMS low mass stars, the plasma temperatures have been found to be in the range of 0.2 keV to 3 keV with a median value of ~1.3 keV, with no significant difference in plasma temperatures during their evolution from 4 to 46 Myr. The X-ray luminosity distributions of the PMS low mass stars have been found to be similar in the young star clusters under study. This may suggest a nearly uniform X-ray activity in the PMS low mass stars of ages ~4--14 Myr. These observed values of L_X/L_{bol} are found to have a mean value of 10^{-3.6\pm0.4}, which is below the X-ray saturation level.The L_X/L_{bol} values for the PMS low mass stars are well correlated with their bolometric luminosities, that implies its dependence on the internal structure of the low mass stars. The difference between the X-ray luminosity distributions of the intermediate mass stars and the PMS low mass stars has not been found to be statistically significant. Their L_X/L_{bol} values, however have been found to be significantly different from each other with a confidence level greater than 99.999%. The possibility of X-ray emission from the intermediate mass stars due to a low mass star in close proximity of the intermediate mass star can not be ruled out due to the limited spatial resolution of XMM-Newton., Comment: 37 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables (Accepted for publication in Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy)

The supernovae of Type Ibc are rare and the detailed characteristics of these explosions have been studied only for a few events. Unlike Type II SNe, the progenitors of Type Ibc have never been detected in pre-explosion images. So, to understand the nature of their progenitors and the characteristics of the explosions, investigation of proximate events are necessary. Here we present the results of multi-wavelength observations of Type Ib SN 2007uy in the nearby ($\sim$ 29.5 Mpc) galaxy NGC 2770. Analysis of the photometric observations revealed this explosion as an energetic event with peak absolute R band magnitude $-18.5\pm0.16$, which is about one mag brighter than the mean value ($-17.6\pm0.6$) derived for well observed Type Ibc events. The SN is highly extinguished, E(B-V) = 0.63$\pm$0.15 mag, mainly due to foreground material present in the host galaxy. From optical light curve modeling we determine that about 0.3 M$_{\odot}$ radioactive $^{56}$Ni is produced and roughly 4.4 M$_{\odot}$ material is ejected during this explosion with liberated energy $\sim 15\times10^{51}$ erg, indicating the event to be an energetic one. Through optical spectroscopy, we have noticed a clear aspheric evolution of several line forming regions, but no dependency of asymmetry is seen on the distribution of $^{56}$Ni inside the ejecta. The SN shock interaction with the circumburst material is clearly noticeable in radio follow-up, presenting a Synchrotron Self Absorption (SSA) dominated light curve with a contribution of Free Free Absorption (FFA) during the early phases. Assuming a WR star, with wind velocity $\ga 10^3 {\rm km s}^{-1}$, as a progenitor, we derive a lower limit to the mass loss rate inferred from the radio data as $\dot{M} \ga 2.4\times10^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$, yr$^{-1}$, which is consistent with the results obtained for other Type Ibc SNe bright at radio frequencies., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present densely-sampled UBVRI/griz photometric and low-resolution (6-10A) optical spectroscopic observations from 4 to 270 days after explosion of a newly discovered type II SN 2012aw in a nearby (~9.9 Mpc) galaxy M95. The light-curve characteristics of apparent magnitudes, colors, bolometric luminosity and the presence and evolution of prominent spectral features are found to have striking similarity with the archetypal IIP SNe 1999em, 1999gi and 2004et. The early time observations of SN 2012aw clearly detect minima in the light-curve of V, R and I bands near 37 days after explosion and this we suggest to be an observational evidence for emergence of recombination phase. The mid-plateau MV magnitude (-16.67 $\pm$ 0.04) lies in between the bright (~ -18) and subluminous (~ -15) IIP SNe. The mass of nickel is 0.06$\pm$0.01 M_sun. The SYNOW modelling of spectra indicate that the value and evolution of photospheric velocity is similar to SN 2004et, but about ~600 km/s higher than that of SNe 1999em and 1999gi at comparable epochs. This trend is more apparent in the line velocities of H alpha and H beta. A comparison of ejecta velocity properties with that of existing radiation-hydrodynamical simulations indicate that the energy of explosion lies in the range 1-2x10^51 ergs; a further comparison of nebular phase [Oi] doublet luminosity with SNe 2004et and 1987A indicate that the mass of progenitor star is about 14-15 M_sun. The presence of high-velocity absorption features in the mid-to-late plateau and possibly in early phase spectra show signs of interaction between ejecta and the circumstellar matter; being consistent with its early-time detection at X-ray and radio wavebands., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 7 tables, Accepted to MNRAS

We present survey results obtained from the UBVRI optical photometric follow-up of 19 bright core-collapse SNe during 2002-2012 using 1-m class optical telescopes operated by the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Science (acronym ARIES), Nainital India. This homogeneous set of data have been used to study behavior of optical light/color curve, and to gain insight into object-to-object peculiarity. We derive integrated luminosities for types IIP, Ibc and luminous SNe. Supernova 2012A was discovered on 7.39UT, January, 2012 in the nearby galaxy NGC 3239 at an unfiltered magnitude of 14.6 and classified spectroscopically as a Type IIP event. We present the low-resolution spectroscopic and UBVRI broad-band photometric investigations of the Type IIb supernova 2011fu, discovered in UGC 01626. The photometric follow-up of this event has been initiated a few days after the explosion and covers a period of about 175 days. The early-phase light curve shows a rise followed by steep decay in all bands and shares properties very similar to that seen in case of SN 1993J, with a possible detection of the adiabatic cooling phase. Modelling of the quasi-bolometric light curve suggests that the progenitor had an extended ($\sim 1 \times 10^{13}$ cm), low-mass ($\sim 0.1$ $M_\odot$) H-rich envelope on top of a dense, compact ($\sim 2 \times 10^{11}$ cm), more massive ($\sim$ 1.1 $M_\odot$) He-rich core. The nickel mass synthesized during the explosion was found to be $\sim$ 0.21 $M_\odot$, slightly larger than seen in case of other Type IIb SNe. The spectral modelling performed with SYNOW suggests that the early-phase line velocities for H and Fe\,{\sc ii} features were $\sim 16000$ km s$^{-1}$ and $\sim 14000$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. We present results of a variability search in the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 6866 from 29 nights over two observing seasons. We find 28 periodic variables, of which 19 are newly identified. The periods of these variables, which have V magnitudes from 11.5 to 19.3 mag, range from ~ 48 min to 37 d. We detected several delta-Scuti stars, some of which are of high amplitude, as well as gamma-Doradus, rotational variables and eclipsing binaries. In order to study the physical properties of the cluster, we obtained UBVRI photometry of all the stars on a good photometric night. The radial distribution of the stellar surface density shows that the cluster has a radial extent of about 7 arcmin (~3 pc) with a peak density of 5.7+/-0.7 stars/arcmin^2 at the cluster center. The colour-colour diagram indicates a reddening of E(B-V) = 0.10 mag towards NGC 6866. A distance of ~ 1.47 kpc and an age of ~ 630 Myr is estimated from the colour-magnitude diagram using the theoretical isochrones of solar metallicity., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present time-series photometry of stars located in the extremely young open cluster Berkeley 59. Using the 1.04 m telescope at ARIES, Nainital, we have identified 42 variables in a field of 13'x13' around the cluster. The probable members of the cluster are identified using (V, V-I) colour-magnitude diagram and (J-H, H-K) colour-colour diagram. Thirty one variables are found to be pre-main sequence stars associated with the cluster. The ages and masses of pre-main sequence stars are derived from colour-magnitude diagram by fitting theoretical models to the observed data points. The ages of the majority of the probable pre-main sequence variable candidates range from 1 to 5 Myrs. The masses of these pre-main sequence variable stars are found to be in the range of ~0.3 to ~3.5 Msun and these could be T Tauri stars. The present statistics reveal that about 90% T Tauri stars have periods < 15 days. The classical T Tauri stars are found to have larger amplitude in comparison to the weak line T Tauri stars. There is an indication that the amplitude decreases with increase of the mass, which could be due to the dispersal of disk of relatively massive stars., Comment: 11 pages, 12 Figures and 2 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present BV RI photometric and low-resolution spectroscopic investigation of a type II core-collapse supernova (SN) 2008gz, which occurred in a star forming arm and within a half-light radius (solar metallicity region) of a nearby spiral galaxy NGC 3672. The SN event was detected late and a detailed investigation of its light curves and spectra spanning 200 days suggest that it is an event of type IIP similar to archetypal SNe 2004et and 1999em. However, in contrast to other events of its class, the SN 2008gz exhibits rarely observed V magnitude drop of 1.5 over the period of a month during plateau to nebular phase. Using 0.21 mag of Av as a lower limit and a distance of 25.5 Mpc, we estimate synthesized $^{56}$Ni mass of 0.05 \pm 0.01 M* and a mid-plateau Mv of -16.6 \pm 0.2 mag. The photospheric velocity is observed to be higher than that was observed for SN 2004et at similar epochs, indicating explosion energy was comparable to or higher than SN 2004et. Similar trend was also seen for the expansion velocity of H-envelopes. By comparing its properties with other well studied events as well as by using a recent simulation of pre-SN models of Dessart, Livne & Waldman (2010), we infer an explosion energy range of 2 - 3 x 10$^{51}$ erg and this coupled with the observed width of the forbidden [O I] 6300-6364 {\AA} line at 275 days after the explosion gives an upper limit for the main-sequence (non-rotating, solar metallicity) progenitor mass of 17 M*. Our narrow-band H{\alpha} observation, taken nearly 560 days after the explosion and the presence of an emission kink at zero velocity in the Doppler corrected spectra of SN indicate that the event took place in a low luminosity star forming H II region., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present X-ray emission characteristics of the massive O-type stars DH Cep and HD 97434 using archival XMM-Newton observations. There is no convincing evidence for short term variability in the X-ray intensity during the observations. However, the analysis of their spectra reveals X-ray structure being consistent with two-temperature plasma model. The hydrogen column densities derived from X-ray spectra of DH Cep and HD 97434 are in agreement with the reddening measurements for their corresponding host clusters NGC 7380 and Trumpler 18, indicating that the absorption by stellar wind is negligible. We present X-ray analysis of two Wolf-Rayet (WR) binaries: V444 Cyg and CD Cru using the data from observations with XMM-Newton. The X-ray light curves show the phase locked variability in both binaries, where the flux increased by a factor of $\sim 2$ in the case of V444 Cyg and $\sim 1.5$ in the case of CD Cru from minimum to maximum. The maximum luminosities in the 0.3--7.5 keV energy band were found to be $5.8\times10^{32}$ and $2.8\times10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for V444 Cyg and CD Cru, respectively. X-ray spectra of these stars confirmed large extinction and revealed hot plasma with prominent emission line features of highly ionized Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca and Fe, and are found to be consistent with a two-temperature plasma model. The cooler plasma at a temperature of $\sim$ 0.6 keV was found to be constant at all phases of both binaries, and could be due to a distribution of small-scale shocks in radiation-driven outflows. The hot components in these binaries were found to be phase dependent. They varied from 1.85 to 9.61 keV for V444 Cyg and from 1.63 to 4.27 keV for CD Cru. The absorption of the hard component varied with orbital phase and found to be maximum during primary eclipse of V444 Cyg. The high plasma temperature and variability with orbital phase suggest that the hard-component emission is caused by a colliding wind shock between the binary components., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables. accepted for publication in MNRAS
