Search

We present a comprehensive analysis of a planetary microlensing event OGLE-2015-BLG-1609. The planetary anomaly was detected by two survey telescopes, OGLE and MOA. Each of these surveys collected enough data over the planetary anomaly to allow for an unambiguous planet detection. Such survey detections of planetary anomalies are needed to build a robust sample of planets that could improve studies on the microlensing planetary occurrence rate by reducing biases and statistical uncertainties. In this work, we examined different methods for modeling microlensing events using individual datasets, particularly we incorporated a Galactic model prior to better constrain poorly defined microlensing parallax. Ultimately, we fitted a comprehensive model to all available data, identifying three potential typologies, with two showing comparably high Bayesian evidence. Our analysis indicates that the host of the planet is a brown dwarf with a probability of 34%, or a low-mass stellar object (M-dwarf) with the probability of 66%., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Stellar rotation, a key factor influencing stellar structure and evolution, also drives magnetic activity, which is manifested as spots or flares on stellar surface. Here, we present a collection of 18 443 rotating variables located toward the Galactic bulge, identified in the photometric database of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) project. These stars exhibit distinct magnetic activity, including starspots and flares. With this collection, we provide long-term, time-series photometry in Cousins I- and Johnson V-band obtained by OGLE since 1997, and basic observational parameters, i.e., equatorial coordinates, rotation periods, mean brightness, and brightness amplitudes in both bands. In this work, we search the OGLE-IV outer Galactic bulge fields for short-period variable objects. The investigation focuses on unexplored timescales roughly below one hour in an area containing about 700 million stellar sources down to approximately I=20 mag. We concentrate mainly on Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs), which represent a recently discovered enigmatic class of short-period hot subluminous stars. We find 33 BLAPs in the period range from 7.5 to 66.5 min. Thirty-one of them are new discoveries, which increases the number of known stars of this class to over one hundred. Additional eighteen objects with pulsation-like light curve shapes and periods ranging from 17.3 to 53.7 min are presented. Very likely, these are $\delta$ Sct/SX Phe-type stars, but some of them could be pulsating hot subdwarfs or BLAPs. We also report on the detection of five eclipsing binary systems with orbital periods between 61.2 and 121.9 min and three mysterious variable objects with I-band amplitudes larger than 0.9 mag. Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs) are a recently discovered class of short-period pulsating variable stars. In this work, we present new information on these stars based on photometric and spectroscopic data obtained for known and new objects detected by the OGLE survey. BLAPs are evolved objects with pulsation periods in the range of 3--75 min, stretching between subdwarf B-type stars and upper main-sequence stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. In general, BLAPs are single-mode stars pulsating in the fundamental radial mode. Their phase-folded light curves are typically sawtooth shaped, but light curves of shorter-period objects are more rounded and symmetric, while many longer-period objects exhibit an additional bump. The long-term OGLE observations show that the period change rates of BLAPs are usually of the order of 10^-7 per year and in a quarter of the sample are negative. An exception is the triple-mode object OGLE-BLAP-030, which changes its dominant period much faster, at a rate of about +4.6 x 10^-6 per year. The spectroscopic data indicate that the BLAPs form a homogeneous group in the period, surface gravity, and effective temperature spaces. However, we observe a split into two groups in terms of helium-to-hydrogen content. The atmospheres of the He-enriched BLAPs are more abundant in metals (about five times) than the atmosphere of the Sun. We discover that the BLAPs obey a period--gravity relationship and we use the distance to OGLE-BLAP-009 to derive a period--luminosity relation. Most of the stars observed in the OGLE Galactic bulge fields seem to reside in the bulge, while the remaining objects likely are in the foreground Galactic disk., Comment: submitted to ApJ, 21 pages, 14 figures

We report the discovery of the classical Cepheid OGLE-GD-CEP-1884 (= GDS_J1535467-555656) with the longest pulsation period known in our Galaxy. The period of 78.14 d is nearly 10 d longer than that of the previous record-holding Cepheid, S Vulpeculae, and thus, OGLE-GD-CEP-1884 can be categorized as the first ultra long period Cepheid in the Milky Way. This star is present in the ASAS-SN and Gaia DR3 catalogs of variable stars, but it has been classified as a long-period variable in those catalogs. Based on more than 10 years of the photometric monitoring of this star carried out by the OGLE project in the I and V bands and a radial velocity curve from the Gaia Focused Product Release, we unequivocally demonstrate that this object is a fundamental-mode classical Cepheid. By employing the mid-infrared period-luminosity relation, we determine the distance to OGLE-GD-CEP-1884 (4.47 +- 0.34 kpc) and place it on the Milky Way map, along with about 2400 other classical Cepheids. We present results of a search for transiting exoplanets in 10-yr long photometry with thousands of epochs taken in the direction of the Galactic bulge. This photometry was collected in the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV). Our search covered approx. 222 000 stars brighter than I = 15.5 mag. Selected transits were verified using a probabilistic method. The search resulted in 99 high-probability candidates for transiting exoplanets. The estimated distances to these targets are between 0.4 kpc and 5.5 kpc, which is a significantly wider range than for previous transit searches. The planets found are Jupiter-size, with the exception of one (named OGLE-TR-1003b) located in the hot Neptune desert. If the candidate is confirmed, it can be important for studies of highly irradiated intermediate-size planets. The existing long-term, high-cadence photometry of our candidates increases the chances of detecting transit timing variations at long timescales. Selected candidates will be observed by the future NASA flagship mission, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, in its search for Galactic bulge microlensing events, which will further enhance the photometric coverage of these stars., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. We present the OGLE collection of delta Scuti stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud and in its foreground. Our dataset encompasses a total of 15 256 objects, constituting the largest sample of extragalactic delta Sct stars published so far. In the case of 12 delta Sct pulsators, we detected additional eclipsing or ellipsoidal variations in their light curves. These are the first known candidates for binary systems containing delta Sct components beyond the Milky Way. We provide observational parameters for all variables, including pulsation periods, mean magnitudes, amplitudes, and Fourier coefficients, as well as long-term light curves in the I- and V-bands collected during the fourth phase of the OGLE project. We construct the period-luminosity (PL) diagram, in which fundamental-mode and first-overtone delta Sct stars form two nearly parallel ridges. The latter ridge is an extension of the PL relation obeyed by first-overtone classical Cepheids. The slopes of the PL relations for delta Sct variables are steeper than those for classical Cepheids, indicating that the continuous PL relation for first-overtone delta Sct variables and Cepheids is non-linear, exhibiting a break at a period of approximately 0.5 d. We also report the enhancement of the OGLE collection of Cepheids and RR Lyr stars with newly identified and reclassified objects, including pulsators contained in the recently published Gaia DR3 catalog of variable stars. Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs) form a mysterious class of variable stars with typical periods of tens of minutes and amplitudes above 0.1 mag. In this work, we present results of a variability search focused on timescales shorter than 1 h, conducted in OGLE-IV Galactic disk fields containing about 1.1 billion stellar sources down to I$\approx$20 mag. Twenty-five BLAPs have been detected, 20 of which are new discoveries. Their periods range from 8.4 min to 62.1 min. We have also found six new eclipsing binary systems with orbital periods from 38.3 min to 121.3 min and five short-period large-amplitude (> 0.17 mag in the I-band) variable stars of unknown type.

We present the first-ever collection of delta Scuti stars found over the entire area of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The sample consists of 2810 variables of which over 2600 objects belong to the SMC while the remaining stars are most likely members of the Milky Way's halo. The sample has been divided into 2733 singlemode and 77 multimode pulsators. We report the classification of 24 puzzling short-period variable stars located in OGLE-IV Galactic bulge fields. The stars are low-amplitude (<0.05 mag) multi-periodic objects with dominant periods between 22 and 54 min whose type could not have been unambiguously established based on photometry only. A low-resolution spectroscopic follow-up has shown that all the objects are main sequence A/F-type stars. Thus, all the variables are delta Sct-type pulsators. We present the largest collection of delta Scuti-type stars in the Milky Way. Together with the recently published OGLE collection of delta Sct variables in the inner Galactic bulge, our sample consists of 24 488 objects distributed along the Milky Way plane, over galactic longitudes ranging from about -170 deg to +60 deg. The collection data include the I- and V-band time-series photometry collected since 1997 during the OGLE-II, OGLE-III, and OGLE-IV surveys. We show the on-sky distribution of delta Sct stars in the Galactic bulge and disk, discuss their period, luminosity and amplitude distributions, present Petersen diagram for multimode pulsators, distinguish 34 delta Sct stars in eclipsing and ellipsoidal binary systems, and list probable members of globular clusters., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Long secondary periods (LSPs), observed in a third of pulsating red giant stars, are the only unexplained type of large-amplitude stellar variability known at this time. Here we show that this phenomenon is a manifestation of a substellar or stellar companion orbiting the red giant star. Our investigation is based on a sample of about 16,000 well-defined LSP variables detected in the long-term OGLE photometric database of the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, combined with the mid-infrared data extracted from the NEOWISE-R archive. From this collection, we selected about 700 objects with stable, large-amplitude, well-sampled infrared light curves and found that about half of them exhibit secondary eclipses, thus presenting an important piece of evidence that the physical mechanism responsible for LSPs is binarity. Namely, the LSP light changes are due to the presence of a dusty cloud orbiting the red giant together with the companion and obscuring the star once per orbit. The secondary eclipses, visible only in the infrared wavelength, occur when the cloud is hidden behind the giant. In this scenario, the low-mass companion is a former planet that has accreted a significant amount of mass from the envelope of its host star and grown into a brown dwarf., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We present a collection of 10 111 genuine delta Sct-type pulsating variable stars detected in the OGLE-IV Galactic bulge fields. In this sample, 9835 variables are new discoveries. For most of the stars photometric data cover the whole decade 2010-2019. We illustrate a huge variety of light curve shapes of delta Sct variables. Long-term observations have allowed us to spot objects with evident period, amplitude, and mean brightness variations. Our analysis indicates that about 28% of the stars are single-mode pulsators. Fourteen delta Sct stars show additional eclipsing or ellipsoidal binary modulation. We report significant attenuation or even disappearance of the pulsation signal in six sources. The whole set of variables is a mix of objects representing various Milky Way's populations, with the majority of stars from the Galactic bulge. There are also representatives of the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy. Some of the newly detected variables could be SX Phe-type stars residing in globular clusters. Anomalous Cepheids (ACs) are metal-deficient, core-helium-burning pulsating stars with masses in the range 1.2-2.2 M_S. Until recently, all known ACs were pure single-mode pulsators. The first candidate for an AC pulsating in more than one radial mode - OGLE-GAL-ACEP-091 - was recently identified in the Milky Way based on the photometric database of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) survey. We analyze this object showing that it is actually a triple-mode pulsator. Its position in the Petersen diagram, the light-curve morphology quantified by Fourier coefficients, and absolute magnitudes derived from the Gaia parallax are consistent with the assumption that OGLE-GAL-ACEP-091 is an AC. Our grid of linear pulsation models indicates that OGLE-GAL-ACEP-091 is a 1.8 M_S star with a metallicity of about [Fe/H] = -0.5 dex., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We report on the results of a comprehensive search for Cepheid variable stars in the fields photometricallymonitored by the OGLE Galaxy Variability Survey. We identify 742 Cepheids not included in the first release of the OGLE Collection of Galactic Cepheids and reclassify several dozen previously published variables. The upgraded collection comprises 1974 classical, 1625 type II, and 119 anomalous Cepheids located in the area of about 3000 square degrees covering the disk and bulge of the Milky Way. We present the most interesting objects in our sample: an isolated group of long-period doublemode classical Cepheids pulsating in the fundamental mode and first overtone, the first known Galactic double-mode Cepheid with the second and third overtone excited, double-mode type II Cepheids, candidates for single-mode first-overtone BL Her stars, and Cepheids showing simultaneous eclipsing variability. We present the most extensive and detailed reddening maps of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) derived from the color properties of Red Clump (RC) stars. The analysis is based on the deep photometric maps from the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV), covering approximately 670 deg2 of the sky in the Magellanic System region. The resulting maps provide reddening information for 180 deg2 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 75 deg2 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), with a resolution of 1.7x1.7 arcmin in the central parts of the MCs, decreasing to approximately 27x27 arcmin in the outskirts. The mean reddening is E(V-I) = 0.100 +- 0.043 mag in the LMC and E(V-I) = 0.047 +- 0.025 mag in the SMC. We refine methods of calculating the RC color to obtain the highest possible accuracy of reddening maps based on RC stars. Using spectroscopy of red giants, we find the metallicity gradient in both MCs, which causes a slight decrease of the intrinsic RC color with distance from the galaxy center of ~0.002 mag/deg in the LMC and between 0.003 and 0.009 mag/deg in the SMC. The central values of the intrinsic RC color are 0.886 and 0.877 mag in the LMC and SMC, respectively. We present an upgrade of the OGLE Collection of RR Lyrae stars in the Galactic bulge and disk. The size of our sample has been doubled and reached 78 350 RR Lyr variables, of which 56 508 are fundamental-mode pulsators (RRab stars), 21 321 pulsate solely in the first-overtone (RRc stars), 458 are classical double-mode pulsators (RRd stars), and 63 are anomalous RRd variables (including five triple-mode pulsators). For all the newly identified RR Lyr stars, we publish time-series photometry obtained during the OGLE Galaxy Variability Survey. We present the spatial distribution of RR Lyr stars on the sky, provide a list of globular clusters hosting RR Lyr variables, and discuss the Petersen diagram for multimode pulsators. We find new RRd stars belonging to a compact group in the Petersen diagram (with period ratios P_1O/P_F = 0.74 and fundamental-mode periods P_F = 0.44 d) and we show that their spatial distribution is roughly spherically symmetrical around the Milky Way center., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We present an updated three dimensional map of the Milky Way based on a sample of 2431 classical Cepheid variable stars, supplemented with about 200 newly detected classical Cepheids from the OGLE survey. The new objects were discovered as a result of a dedicated observing campaign of the ~280 square degree extension of the OGLE footprint of the Galactic disk during 2018-2019 observing seasons. These regions cover the main part of the northern Galactic warp that has been deficient in Cepheids so far. We use direct distances to the sample of over 2390 classical Cepheids to model the distribution of the young stellar population in the Milky Way and recalculate the parameters of the Galactic disk warp. Our data show that its northern part is very prominent and its amplitude is ~10% larger than that of the southern part. By combining Gaia astrometric data with the Galactic rotation curve and distances to Cepheids from our sample, we construct a map of the vertical component of the velocity vector for all Cepheids in the Milky Way disk. We find large-scale vertical motions with amplitudes of 10-20 km/s, such that Cepheids located in the northern warp exhibit large positive vertical velocity (toward the north Galactic pole), whereas those in the southern warp - negative vertical velocity (toward the south Galactic pole)., Comment: This version is updated with a kinematical analysis of the Galactic warp using Gaia astrometric data

We present the final release of the OGLE collection of classical pulsators (Cepheids and RR Lyr stars) in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The sky coverage has been increased from 670 to 765 square degrees compared to the previous edition of the collection. We also add some Cepheids and RR Lyr stars found by the Gaia team and reclassify three Cepheids. We present a detailed analysis of Magellanic Bridge Cepheid sample constructed using the OGLE Collection of Variable Stars. Our updated Bridge sample contains 10 classical and 13 anomalous Cepheids. We calculate their individual distances using optical period--Wesenheit relations and construct three-dimensional maps. Classical Cepheids on-sky locations match very well neutral hydrogen and young stars distributions, thus they add to the overall Bridge young population. In three dimensions, eight out of ten classical Cepheids form a bridge-like connection between the Magellanic Clouds. The other two are located slightly farther and may constitute the Counter Bridge. We estimate ages of our Cepheids to be less than 300 Myr for five up to eight out of ten, depending on whether the rotation is included. This is in agreement with a scenario where these stars were formed in-situ after the last encounter of the Magellanic Clouds. Cepheids' proper motions reveal that they are moving away from both Large and Small Magellanic Cloud. Anomalous Cepheids are more spread than classical Cepheids in both two and three dimensions. Even though, they form a rather smooth connection between the Clouds. We use the extended and updated OGLE Collection of Variable Stars to thoroughly analyze distribution of RR Lyrae stars in the Magellanic Bridge. We use photometric metallicities to derive absolute Wesenheit magnitude and then individual distance of each RR Lyr star. We confirm results from our earlier study showing that RR Lyr stars are present in between the Magellanic Clouds, though their three-dimensional distribution rather resembles two extended overlapping structures than a strict bridge-like connection. The contours do connect in the southern parts of the Bridge, albeit on a too low level to state that there exists an evident connection. To test the sample numerically, we use multi-Gaussian fitting and conclude that there is no additional population or overdensity located in the Bridge. We also try to reproduce results on putative RR Lyr Magellanic Bridge stream by selecting RR Lyr candidates from Gaia Data Release 1. We show that we are not able to obtain the evident connection of the Clouds without many spurious sources in the sample, as the cuts are not able to remove artifacts and not eliminate the evident connection at the same time. Moreover, for the first time we present the Gaia Data Release 2 RR Lyr stars in the Magellanic Bridge area and show that their distribution matches our results., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. We present the discovery and statistical analysis of $12\;660$ spotted variable stars toward and inside the Galactic bulge from over two-decade-long Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) data. We devise a new method of dereddening of individual stars toward the Galactic bulge where strong and highly nonuniform extinction is present. In effect, $11\;812$ stars were classified as giants and $848$ as dwarfs. Well defined correlations between the luminosity, variability amplitude and rotation period were found for the giants. Rapidly rotating dwarfs with periods $P \leq 2$ d show I-band amplitudes lower than 0.2 mag which is substantially less than the amplitudes of up to 0.8 mag observed in giants and slowly rotating dwarfs. We also notice that amplitudes of stars brighter than $I_0 \approx 16$ mag do not exceed 0.3-0.4 mag. We divide the stars into three groups characterized by correlation between light and color variations. The positive correlation is characteristic for stars that are cooler when fainter, which results from the variable coverage of the stellar surface with spots similar to the sunspots. The variability of stars that are cooler when brighter (negative correlation) can be characterized by chemical spots with overabundance of heavy elements inside and variable line-blanketing effect, which is observed in chemically peculiar stars. The null correlation may results from very high level of the magnetic activity with rapidly variable magnetic fields. This division is readily visible on the color-magnitude diagram (CMD), which suggests that it may depend on the radius of the stars. We detect 79 flaring objects and discuss briefly their properties. Among others, we find that relative brightening during flares is correlated with brightness amplitude., Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures. We present here a new major part of the OGLE Collection of Variable Stars - OGLE Collection of Galactic Cepheids. The new dataset was extracted from the Galaxy Variability Survey images - a dedicated large-scale survey of the Galactic disk and outer bulge conducted by the OGLE project since 2013. The OGLE collection contains 2721 Cepheids of all types - classical, type II and anomalous. It more than doubles the number of known Galactic classical Cepheids. Due to the long-term monitoring and large number of epochs the selected sample is very pure, generally free from contaminating stars of other types often mimicking Cepheids. Its completeness is high at 90% level for classical Cepheids - tested using recent samples of Galactic Cepheids: ASAS-SN, ATLAS, Gaia DR2 and Wise catalog of variable stars. Our comparisons indicate that the completeness of the two latter datasets, Gaia DR2 and Wise catalog, is very low, at < 10% level in the magnitude range of the OGLE GVS survey (10.8 < I < 19.5 mag). Both these samples are severely contaminated by non-Cepheids (the purity is 67% and 56%, respectively). We also present several interesting objects found in the new OGLE Collection - multi-mode pulsators, a first Galactic candidate for eclipsing system containing Cepheid, a binary Cepheid candidate., Comment: Printed version. The nature of type II Cepheids and anomalous Cepheids is still not well known and their evolutionary channels leave many unanswered questions. We use complete collection of classical pulsating stars in the Magellanic Clouds discovered by the OGLE project, to compare their spatial distributions, which are one of the characteristic features directly related to the star formation history. In this analysis we use 9649 classical Cepheids, 262 anomalous Cepheids, 338 type II Cepheids and 46 443 RR Lyr stars from both Magellanic Clouds. We compute three-dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests for every possible pair of type II and anomalous Cepheids with classical Cepheids, and RR Lyr stars. We confirm that BL Her stars are as old as RR Lyr variable stars - their spatial distributions are similar, and they create a vast halo around both galaxies. We discover that spatial distribution of W Vir stars has attributes characteristic for both young and old stellar populations. Hence, it seems that these similarities are related to the concentration of these stars in the center of the Large Magellanic Cloud, and the lack of a vast halo. This leads to the conclusion that W Vir variables could be a mixture of old and intermediate-age stars. Our analysis of the three-dimensional distributions of anomalous Cepheids shows that they differ significantly from classical Cepheids. Statistical tests of anomalous Cepheids distributions with RR Lyr distributions do not give unambiguous results. We consider that these two distributions can be similar through the vast halos they create. We present a nearly complete collection of type II Cepheids in the Magellanic System. The sample consists of 338 objects: 285 and 53 variables in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, respectively. Based on the pulsation periods and light-curve morphology, we classified 118 of our type II Cepheids as BL Herculis, 120 as W Virginis, 34 as peculiar W Virginis, and 66 as RV Tauri stars. For all objects, we publish time-series VI photometry obtained during the OGLE-IV survey, from 2010 to the end of 2017. We present the most interesting individual objects in our collection: 16 type II Cepheids showing additional eclipsing or ellipsoidal variability, two RV Tau variables more than 2.5 mag fainter than other stars of this type in the LMC, an RVb star that drastically decreased the amplitude of the long-period modulation, type II Cepheids exhibiting significant amplitude and period changes, and an RV Tau star which experiences interchanges of deep and shallow minima. The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy, with physical properties inferred from various tracers informed by the extrapolation of structures seen in other galaxies. However, the distances of these tracers are measured indirectly and are model-dependent. We constructed a map of the Milky Way in three-dimensions based on the positions and distances of thousands of classical Cepheid variable stars. This map shows the structure of our Galaxy's young stellar population, and allows us to constrain the warped shape of the Milky Way's disk. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the light and radial velocity curves of the semi-detached eclipsing binary system OGLE-LMC-ECL-09937. The system is composed of a hot, massive and luminous primary star of a late-O spectral type, and a more evolved, but less massive and luminous secondary, implying an Algol-type system that underwent a mass transfer episode. We derive masses of 21.04 +/- 0.34 M_Sun and 7.61 +/- 0.09 M_Sun and radii of 9.93 +/- 0.06 R_Sun and 9.18 +/- 0.04 R_Sun, for the primary and the secondary component, respectively, which make it the most massive known Algol-type system with masses and radii of the components measured with <2% accuracy. Consequently, the parameters of OGLE-LMC-ECL-09937 provide an important contribution to the sparsely populated high-mass end of the stellar mass distribution, and an interesting object for stellar evolution studies, being a possible progenitor of a binary system composed of two neutron stars., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 4 Tables, published in Acta Astronomica

We present a collection of classical, type II, and anomalous Cepheids detected in the OGLE fields toward the Galactic center. The sample contains 87 classical Cepheids pulsating in one, two or three radial modes, 924 type II Cepheids divided into BL Her, W Vir, peculiar W Vir, and RV Tau stars, and 20 anomalous Cepheids - first such objects found in the Galactic bulge. Additionally, we upgrade the OGLE Collection of RR Lyr stars in the Galactic bulge by adding 828 newly identified variables. For all Cepheids and RR Lyr stars, we publish time-series VI photometry obtained during the OGLE-IV project, from 2010 through 2017. We discuss basic properties of our classical pulsators: their spatial distribution, light curve morphology, period-luminosity relations, and position in the Petersen diagram. We present our study of OGLE-2014-SN-073, one of the brightest Type II SN ever discovered, with an unusually broad lightcurve combined with high ejecta velocities. From our hydrodynamical modelling we infer a remarkable ejecta mass of $60^{+42}_{-16}$~M$_\odot$, and a relatively high explosion energy of $12.4^{+13.0}_{-5.9} \times10^{51}$~erg. We show that this object belongs, with a very small number of other hydrogen-rich SNe, to an energy regime that is not explained by standard core-collapse (CC) neutrino-driven explosions. We compare the quantities inferred by the hydrodynamical modelling with the expectations of various exploding scenarios, trying to explain the high energy and luminosity released. We find some qualitative similarities with pair-instabilities SNe, although a prompt injection of energy by a magnetar seems also a viable alternative to explain such extreme event., Comment: 49 pages, 10 figure, including Methods and Supplementary Information. More than a century ago, Henrietta Leavitt discovered the first Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds together with the famous period-luminosity relationship revealed by these stars, which soon after revolutionized our view of the Universe. Over the years, the number of known Cepheids in these galaxies has steadily increased with the breakthrough in the last two decades thanks to the new generation of large-scale long-term sky variability surveys. Here we present the final upgrade of the OGLE Collection of Cepheids in the Magellanic System which already contained the vast majority of known Cepheids. The updated collection now comprises 9649 classical and 262 anomalous Cepheids. Type-II Cepheids will be updated shortly. Thanks to high completeness of the OGLE survey the sample of classical Cepheids includes virtually all stars of this type in the Magellanic Clouds. Thus, the OGLE survey concludes the work started by Leavitt. Additionally, the OGLE sample of RR Lyrae stars in the Magellanic System has been updated. It now counts 46 443 variables. A collection of seven anomalous Cepheids in the halo of our Galaxy detected in front of the Magellanic Clouds is also presented. OGLE photometric data are available to the astronomical community from the OGLE Internet Archive. Regular intrinsic brightness variations observed in many stars are caused by pulsations. These pulsations provide information on the global and structural parameters of the star. The pulsation periods range from seconds to years, depending on the compactness of the star and properties of the matter that forms its outer layers. Here, we report the discovery of more than a dozen of previously unknown short-period variable stars: blue large-amplitude pulsators. These objects show very regular brightness variations with periods in the range of 20-40 min and amplitudes of 0.2-0.4 mag in the optical passbands. The phased light curves have a characteristic sawtooth shape, similar to the shape of classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae-type stars pulsating in the fundamental mode. The objects are significantly bluer than main sequence stars observed in the same fields, which indicates that all of them are hot stars. Follow-up spectroscopy confirms a high surface temperature of about 30,000 K. Temperature and colour changes over the cycle prove the pulsational nature of the variables. However, large-amplitude pulsations at such short periods are not observed in any known type of stars, including hot objects. Long-term photometric observations show that the variable stars are very stable over time. Derived rates of period change are of the order of 10^-7 per year and, in most cases, they are positive. According to pulsation theory, such large-amplitude oscillations may occur in evolved low-mass stars that have inflated helium-enriched envelopes. We present a collection of 450 598 eclipsing and ellipsoidal binary systems detected in the OGLE fields toward the Galactic bulge. The collection consists of binary systems of all types: detached, semi-detached, and contact eclipsing binaries, RS CVn stars, cataclysmic variables, HW Vir binaries, double periodic variables, and even planetary transits. For all stars we provide the I- and V-band time-series photometry obtained during the OGLE-II, OGLE-III, and OGLE-IV surveys. We present the collection of eclipsing binaries in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, based on the OGLE survey. It contains 48605 systems, 40204 belonging to the LMC and 8401 to the SMC. Out of the total number of the presented binaries, 16374 are the new ones. We present the time-series photometry obtained for the selected objects during the fourth phase of the OGLE project. We present a comparison of the Gaia DR1 samples of pulsating variable stars - Cepheids and RR Lyrae type - with the OGLE Collection of Variable Stars aiming at the characterization of the Gaia mission performance in the stellar variability domain. Out of 575 Cepheids and 2322 RR Lyrae candidates from the Gaia DR1 samples located in the OGLE footprint in the sky, 559 Cepheids and 2302 RR Lyrae stars are genuine pulsators of these types. The number of misclassified stars is low indicating reliable performance of the Gaia data pipeline. The completeness of the Gaia DR1 samples of Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars is at the level of 60-75% as compared to the OGLE Collection dataset. We present a three-dimensional analysis of a sample of 22 859 type $ab$ RR Lyrae stars in the Magellanic System from the OGLE-IV Collection of RR Lyrae stars. The distance to each object was calculated based on its photometric metallicity and a theoretical relation between color, absolute magnitude and metallicity. The LMC RR Lyrae distribution is very regular and does not show any substructures. We demonstrate that the bar found in previous studies may be an overdensity caused by blending and crowding effects. The halo is asymmetrical with a higher stellar density in its north-eastern area, which is also located closer to us. Triaxial ellipsoids were fitted to surfaces of a constant number density. Ellipsoids farther from the LMC center are less elongated and slightly rotated toward the SMC. The inclination and position angle change significantly with the $a$ axis size. The median axis ratio is $1:1.23:1.45$. The RR Lyrae distribution in the SMC has a very regular, ellipsoidal shape and does not show any substructures or asymmetries. All triaxial ellipsoids fitted to surfaces of a constant number density have virtually the same shape (axis ratio) and are elongated along the line of sight. The median axis ratio is $1:1.10:2.13$. The inclination angle is very small and thus the position angle is not well defined. We present the distribution of RR Lyrae stars in the Magellanic Bridge area, showing that the Magellanic Clouds' halos overlap. A comparison of the distributions of RR Lyrae stars and Classical Cepheids shows that the former are significantly more spread and distributed regularly, while the latter are very clumped and form several distinct substructures., Comment: 35 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables. Cataclysmic variable stars (CVs) are close binary systems consisting of a white dwarf (primary) that is accreting matter from a low-mass companion star (secondary). From time to time such systems undergo large-amplitude brightenings. The most spectacular eruptions, over $10^4$ times in brightness, occur in classical novae and are caused by a thermonuclear runaway on the surface of the white dwarf. Such eruptions are thought to recur on timescales of $10^4-10^6$. In between, the system's properties depend primarily on the mass-transfer rate: if it is lower than a $10^{-9} M_{\odot}$/year, the accretion becomes unstable and the matter is dumped onto the white dwarf during quasi-periodic dwarf nova outbursts. The hibernation hypothesis predicts that nova eruptions strongly affect the mass-transfer rate, keeping it high for centuries after the event. Subsequently, the mass-transfer rate should significantly decrease for $10^3-10^6$ years, starting the hibernation phase. After that the nova awakes again - with accretion returning to the pre-eruption level and leading to a new nova explosion. The hibernation model predicts cyclical evolution of CVs through phases of high and low mass-transfer. The theory gained some support from the discovery of ancient nova shells around dwarf novae Z Cam and AT Cnc, but direct evidence for considerable mass-transfer changes prior, during and after nova eruptions has not hitherto been found. Here we report long-term observations of the classical nova V1213 Cen (Nova Cen 2009) covering its pre- and post-eruption phases. Within the six years before the explosion, the system revealed dwarf nova outbursts indicative of a low mass-transfer rate. The post-nova is two orders of magnitude brighter than the pre-nova at minimum light with no trace of dwarf nova behavior, implying that the mass-transfer rate increased considerably as a result of the nova explosion., Comment: published in Nature (authors' version)

We report the discovery of a new subclass of double-mode RR Lyrae stars in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The sample of 22 pulsating stars have been extracted from the latest edition of the OGLE collection of RR Lyrae variables in the Magellanic System. The stars pulsating simultaneously in the fundamental (F) and first-overtone (1O) modes have distinctly different properties than regular double-mode RR Lyrae variables (RRd stars). The $P_{1O}/P_F$ period ratios of our anomalous RRd stars are within a range 0.725-0.738, while "classical" double-mode RR Lyrae variables have period ratios in the range 0.742-0.748. In contrast to the typical RRd stars, in the majority of the anomalous pulsators the F-mode amplitudes are higher than the 1O-mode amplitudes. The light curves associated with the F-mode in the anomalous RRd stars show different morphology than the light curves of, both, regular RRd stars and single-mode RRab stars. Most of the anomalous double-mode stars show long-term modulations of the amplitudes (Blazhko-like effect). Translating the period ratios into the abundance parameter, Z, we find for our stars Z in the range (0.002,0.005) - an order of magnitude higher values than typical for RR Lyrae stars. The mass range of the RRd stars inferred from the $W_I$ vs. $P_F$ diagram is (0.55-0.75) of the solar mass. These parameters cannot be accounted for with single star evolution assuming a Reimers-like mass loss. Much greater mass loss caused by interaction with other stars is postulated. We blame the peculiar pulsation properties of our stars to the parametric resonance instability of the 1O-mode to excitation of the F- and 2O-modes as with the inferred parameters of the stars $2\omega_{\rm 1O}\approx\omega_{\rm F}+\omega_{\rm 2O}$., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In an era of extensive photometric observations, the catalogs of RR Lyr type variable stars number tens of thousands of objects. The relation between the iron abundance [Fe/H] and the Fourier parameters of the stars light curve allows us to investigate mean metallicities and metallicity gradients in various stellar environments, independently of time-consuming spectroscopic observations. In this paper we use almost 6500 $V$- and $I$-band light curves of fundamental mode RR Lyr stars from the OGLE-IV survey to provide a relation between the $V$- and $I$-band phase parameter $\varphi_{31}$ used to estimate [Fe/H]. The relation depends on metallicity, which limits its applicability. We apply this relation to metallicity formulae developed for the Johnson $V$- and the Kepler $Kp$-band to obtain the relation between [Fe/H] and $\varphi_{31}$ for the $I$-band photometry. Last, we apply the new relation of Nemec to the OGLE-IV fundamental mode RR Lyr stars data and construct a metallicity map of the Magellanic Clouds. Median [Fe/H] is $-1.39\pm0.44$ dex for the LMC and $-1.77\pm0.48$ dex for the SMC, on the Jurcsik metallicity scale. We also find a metallicity gradient within the LMC with a slope of $-0.029\pm0.002$ dex/kpc in the inner 5 kpc and $-0.030 \pm0.003$ dex/kpc beyond 8 kpc, and no gradient in-between ($-0.019\pm0.002$ dex/kpc integrally). We do not observe a metallicity gradient in the SMC, although we show that the metal-rich RRab stars are more concentrated toward the SMC center than the metal-poor., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables. We present the largest collection of RR Lyrae stars in the Magellanic System and in its foreground. The sample consists of 45 451 RR Lyr stars, of which 39 082 were detected toward the Large Magellanic Cloud and 6369 toward the Small Magellanic Cloud. We provide long-term time-series photometric measurements collected during the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV). We discuss several potential astrophysical applications of our collection: investigation of the structure of the Magellanic Clouds and the Galactic halo, studies of the globular clusters in the Magellanic System, analysis of double-mode RR Lyr stars, and search for RR Lyr stars in eclipsing binary systems., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We present a sample of the most interesting classical Cepheids selected from the OGLE collection of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic System. The main selection criterion for this sample was the presence of non-standard, unique pulsational properties. The sample contains the first known double-mode Cepheid pulsating in the second- and third-overtone modes and a large number of objects with non-radial modes excited. We also found Cepheids revealing Blazhko-like light curve modulation, objects ceasing pulsations or showing atypical shapes of their light curves. We present a census of eclipsing binary systems with classical Cepheid as a component. All such systems known were found in the OGLE collection of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic System. We extend the list of potential candidates adding four new objects found in the OGLE-IV photometric data. One of the new Cepheids in the eclipsing system, OGLE-SMC-CEP-3235, revealed only one eclipse during 15 years of the OGLE photometric monitoring. However, it additionally shows very well pronounced light-time effect indicating that the binarity is real. We also search for the light-time effect in other known eclipsing Cepheids and we clearly detect it in OGLE-LMC-CEP-1812. We present here a nearly complete census of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic System. The sample extends the set of Cepheids published in the past by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) to the outer regions of the Large (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The entire collection consists of 9535 Cepheids of which 4620 belong to the LMC and 4915 are members of the SMC. We provide the I- and V-band time-series photometry of the published Cepheids, their finding charts, and basic observational parameters. Based on this unique OGLE sample of Cepheids we present updated period--luminosity relations for fundamental, first, and second mode of pulsations in the I- and V-bands and for the W_I extinction-free Wesenheit index. We also show the distribution of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic System. The OGLE collection contains several classical Cepheids in the Magellanic Bridge - the region of interaction between the Magellanic Clouds. We present a collection of 250 anomalous Cepheids (ACs) discovered in the OGLE-IV fields toward the Large (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The LMC sample is an extension of the OGLE-III Catalog of ACs published in 2008, while the SMC sample contains the first known bona fide ACs in this galaxy. The total sample is composed of 141 ACs in the LMC and 109 ACs in the SMC. All these stars pulsate in single modes: fundamental (174 objects) or first overtone (76 objects). Additionally, we report the discovery of four ACs located in the foreground of the Magellanic Clouds. These are the first fundamental-mode ACs known in the Galactic field. We demonstrate that the coefficients phi_21 and phi_31 determined by the Fourier light curve decomposition are useful discriminators between classical Cepheids and ACs, at least in the LMC and in the field of the Milky Way. In the SMC, the light curve shapes and mean magnitudes of short-period classical Cepheids make them similar to ACs, which is a source of difficulties in the discrimination of both classes of pulsators. The presence of unidentified ACs in the catalogs of classical Cepheids may be partly responsible for the observed non-linearity of the period-luminosity relation observed for short-period Cepheids in the SMC. We compare spatial distributions of ACs, classical Cepheids and RR Lyr stars. We show that the distribution of ACs resembles that of old stars (RR Lyr variables), although in the LMC there are visible structures typical for young population (classical Cepheids): the bar and spiral arms. We have analyzed a sample of 27,258 fundamental-mode RR Lyrae variable stars (type RRab) detected recently toward the Galactic bulge by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) survey. The data support our earlier claim that these metal-poor stars trace closely the barred structure formed of intermediate-age red clump giants. The distance to the Galactic center (GC) inferred from the bulge RR Lyrae stars is R_0=8.27+/-0.01(stat)+/-0.40(sys) kpc. We show that their spatial distribution has the shape of a triaxial ellipsoid with an major axis located in the Galactic plane and inclined at an angle of i=20+/-3 deg to the Sun-GC line of sight. The obtained scale-length ratio of the major axis to the minor axis in the Galactic plane and to the axis vertical to the plane is 1:0.49(2):0.39(2). We do not see the evidence for the bulge RR Lyrae stars forming an X-shaped structure. Based on the light curve parameters, we derive metallicities of the RRab variables and show that there is a very mild but statistically significant radial metallicity gradient. About 60% of the bulge RRab stars form two very close sequences on the period-amplitude (or Bailey) diagram, which we interpret as two major old bulge populations: A and B. Their metallicities likely differ. Population A is about four times less abundant than the slightly more metal-poor population B. Most of the remaining stars seem to represent other, even more metal-poor populations of the bulge. The presence of multiple old populations indicates that the Milky Way bulge was initially formed through mergers., Comment: ApJ, in press

We report the discovery of two distinct types of ellipsoidal binary systems occupying, so called, sequence E on the period-luminosity (P-L) diagram. We propose that steeper P-L relation is composed of giant-dwarf binaries, while the other consists of giant-giant binary systems. Analysis is based on a sample of 5334 objects, which we select from the OGLE-III survey data toward the the Large Magellanic Cloud. We show that one of the components of ellipsoidal binaries is typically either a Red Clump or a Red Giant Branch star, which leads to clear separation split of the sequence E at P = 40 d. In its short-period part, we identify two subsequences corresponding to the two types of binary systems (E2 and E3), while in the longer-period part the two groups merge forming a single subsequence E1. We extract a group of 271 ellipsoidal systems with eccentric orbits, from our sample. We report the discovery of an intriguing triple-mode RR Lyrae star found in the OGLE Galactic bulge collection, OGLE-BLG-RRLYR-24137. In the OGLE catalog the star was identified as RRd star - double-mode pulsator, pulsating simultaneously in the fundamental and in the first overtone modes. We find that third mode is excited and firmly detect its period doubling. Period ratios are not far from that expected for triple-mode - fundamental, first and third overtone - pulsation. Unfortunately, we cannot reproduce period ratios of the three modes with a consistent set of pulsation models. We present the analysis of Blazhko-type modulation in double-mode RR Lyrae (RRd) stars found in the OGLE photometry of the Galactic bulge. Modulation is detected in 15 stars. Most of them have non-typical period ratio of the radial modes. In the Petersen diagram, at a given period of the fundamental mode, they are located significantly below or above the sequence formed by the majority of RRd stars. Multi-periodic modulation is very frequent; two or three modulation periods are detected in 8 stars. Modulation periods vary from ~20 to more than 300 days. Radial mode amplitudes can be modulated by a few to nearly hundred per cent. Both radial modes may be modulated with the same period. More commonly however, dominant modulation for the fundamental mode has different period than dominant modulation for the first overtone. Quite often modulation of only one mode is detected in the data. We find a clear feedback between pulsation amplitude of the dominant mode and mean stellar brightness: lower the pulsation amplitude, brighter the star. At phases of low pulsation amplitude, the mode periods are prone to fast changes. All the stars share the common feature: their pulsation properties are non-stationary. Amplitudes and phases of the radial modes vary irregularly on a long time-scale of a few hundred or thousand days. The short-term modulations are also irregular. One of the stars has switched the pulsation mode recently: from single-mode fundamental mode pulsation to RRd state. In other star the non-radial mode with characteristic ~0.61 period ratio to the first overtone is detected. We present the discovery of a plausible disk-eclipse system OGLE-BLG182.1.162852. The OGLE light curve for OGLE-BLG182.1.162852 shows three episodes of dimming by $I \simeq 2 - 3$ magnitudes, separated by 1277 days. The shape of the light curve during dimming events is very similar to that of known disk eclipse system OGLE-LMC-ECL-11893 (Dong et al. 2014). The event is presently undergoing a dimming event, predicted to end on December 30th, 2014. We encourage spectroscopic and multi-band photometric observations now. This is a collection of 38257 RR Lyr stars detected over 182 square degrees monitored photometrically by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) in the most central regions of the Galactic bulge. The sample consists of 16804 variables found and published by the OGLE collaboration in 2011 and 21453 RR Lyr stars newly detected in the photometric databases of the fourth phase of the OGLE survey (OGLE-IV). 93% of the OGLE-IV variables were previously unknown. The total sample consists of 27258 RRab, 10825 RRc, and 174 RRd stars. We provide OGLE-IV I- and V-band light curves of the variables along with their basic parameters. About 300 RR Lyr stars in our collection are plausible members of 15 globular clusters. Among others, we found the first pulsating variables that may belong to the globular cluster Terzan 1 and the first RRd star in the globular cluster M54. Our survey also covers the center and outskirts of the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy enabling studies of the spatial distribution of the old stellar population from this galaxy. A group of double-mode RR Lyr stars with period ratios around 0.740 form a stream in the sky that may be a relic of a cluster or a dwarf galaxy tidally disrupted by the Milky Way. Three of our RR Lyr stars experienced a pulsation mode switching from double-mode to single fundamental mode or vice versa. We report the discovery of a young stellar bridge, that forms a continuous connection between the Magellanic Clouds. This finding is based on number density maps for stellar populations found in data gathered by OGLE-IV, that fully cover over 270 deg^2 of the sky in the Magellanic Bridge area. This is the most extensive optical survey of this region up to date. We find that the young population is present mainly in the western half of the MBR, which, together with the newly discovered young population in the eastern Bridge, form a continuous stream of stars connecting both galaxies along Dec ~ -73.5 deg. The young population distribution is clumped, with one of the major densities close to the SMC, and the other, fairly isolated and located approximately mid-way between the Clouds, which we call the OGLE island. These overdensities are well matched by HI surface density contours, although the newly found young population in the eastern Bridge is offset by ~2 deg north from the highest HI density contour. We observe a continuity of red clump stars between the Magellanic Clouds, which represent an intermediate-age population. Red clump stars are present mainly in the southern and central parts of the Magellanic Bridge, below its gaseous part, and their presence is reflected by a strong deviation from the radial density profiles of the two galaxies. This may indicate either a tidal stream of stars, or that the stellar halos of the two galaxies overlap. On the other hand, we do not observe such an overlap within an intermediate-age population represented by the top of the red giant branch and the asymptotic giant branch stars. We also see only minor mixing of the old populations of the Clouds in the southern part of the Bridge, represented by the lowest part of the red giant branch., Comment: 18 pages, 14 Figures.
