We present the first spatially resolved maps of gas-phase metallicity for dust-obscured star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z$ $\sim$ 4, from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, derived from NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy of the H$\alpha$ and [NII] emission lines. Empirically derived literature optical line calibrations are used to determine that the sources are highly metal rich, with both appearing to display regions of supersolar metallicity, particularly in SPT2147-50. While we cannot rule out shocks or AGN in these regions, we suggest that the two systems have already undergone significant enrichment as a result of their extremely high star-formation rates. Utilising ALMA rest-frame 380$\mu$m continuum and [CI]($^3$P$_2$-$^3$P$_1$) line maps we compare metallicity and gas-to-dust ratio variations in the two galaxies, finding the two to be anticorrelated on highly resolved spatial scales, consistent with various literature studies of $z$ $\sim$ 0 galaxies. Extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs) are considered the primary contributor to cosmic reionization and are valuable laboratories to study the astrophysics of massive stars. It is strongly expected that Roman's High Latitude Wide Area Survey (HLWAS) will find many strongly gravitationally lensed [O III] emitters at Cosmic Noon (1 < z < 2.8). Roman imaging and grism spectroscopy alone will simultaneously confirm these strong lens systems and probe their interstellar medium (ISM) and stellar properties on small scales ($\lesssim$ 100 pc). Moreover, these observations will synergize with ground-based and space-based follow-up observations of the discovered lensed [O III] emitters in multi-wavelength analyses of their properties (e.g., massive stars and possible escape of ionizing radiation), spatially resolved on the scales of individual star cluster complexes. Only Roman can uniquely sample a large number of lensed [O III] emitters to study the small scale (~ 100 pc) ISM and stellar properties of these extreme emission line galaxies, detailing the key physics of massive stars and the ISM that govern cosmic reionization., Submitted in response to the call for Roman Telescope CCS white papers

We present the spatially resolved measurements of a cool galactic outflow in the gravitationally lensed galaxy RCS0327 at $z \approx 1.703$ using VLT/MUSE IFU observations. We probe the cool outflowing gas, traced by blueshifted Mg II and Fe II absorption lines, in 15 distinct regions of the same galaxy in its image-plane. Different physical regions, 5 to 7 kpc apart within the galaxy, drive the outflows at different velocities ($V_{out} \sim $ $-161$ to $-240$ km s$^{-1}$), and mass outflow rates ($\dot{M}_{out} \sim$ 183 to 527 $M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}$). The outflow velocities from different regions of the same galaxy vary by 80 km s$^{-1}$, which is comparable to the variation seen in a large sample of star-burst galaxies in the local Universe. Using multiply lensed images of RCS0327, we probe the same star-forming region at different spatial scales (0.5 kpc$^2$-25 kpc$^2$), we find that outflow velocities vary between $ \sim $ $-120$ to $-242$ km s$^{-1}$, and the mass outflow rates vary between $\sim$ 37 to 254 $M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}$. The outflow momentum flux in this galaxy is $\geq$ 100% of the momentum flux provided by star-formation in individual regions, and outflow energy flux is $\approx$ 10% of the total energy flux provided by star-formation. These estimates suggest that the outflow in RCS0327 is energy driven. Dust grains absorb half of the radiation emitted by stars throughout the history of the universe, re-emitting this energy at infrared wavelengths. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are large organic molecules that trace millimeter-size dust grains and regulate the cooling of the interstellar gas within galaxies. Observations of PAH features in very distant galaxies have been difficult due to the limited sensitivity and wavelength coverage of previous infrared telescopes. Here we present JWST observations that detect the 3.3um PAH feature in a galaxy observed less than 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang. The high equivalent width of the PAH feature indicates that star formation, rather than black hole accretion, dominates the infrared emission throughout the galaxy. The light from PAH molecules, large dust grains, and stars and hot dust are spatially distinct from one another, leading to order-of-magnitude variations in the PAH equivalent width and the ratio of PAH to total infrared luminosity across the galaxy. The spatial variations we observe suggest either a physical offset between the PAHs and large dust grains or wide variations in the local ultraviolet radiation field. MACS0647$-$JD is a triply-lensed $z\sim11$ galaxy originally discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope. Here we report new JWST imaging, which clearly resolves MACS0647$-$JD as having two components that are either merging galaxies or stellar complexes within a single galaxy. Both are very small, with stellar masses $\sim10^8\,M_\odot$ and radii $r, Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

The strongly lensed z=2.9233 Lyman break galaxy, SGAS J122651.3+215220, lensed by a cluster at z=0.4358, was first targeted by JWST as part of the JWST-ERS program TEMPLATES: Targeting Extremely Magnified Panchromatic Lensed Arcs and their Extended Star formation. Aiming to combine the exquisite capabilities of JWST with the extreme magnification provided by strong gravitational lensing, these observations will peer into galaxies at cosmic noon and probe the building blocks of star formation. Here, we present an Hubble Space Telescope strong lensing analysis, lens model, source-plane interpretation, and the lensing outputs needed to analyze the JWST observations in the context of the source's intrinsic properties. The environments where galaxies reside play a key role in shaping their star formation histories over cosmic time, yet such environmental effects remain elusive at high redshifts. We update this environmental process by adopting an advanced measure for cluster in-fall time using kinematics and reveal that galaxies experience a gradual decline of star formation after they fall into cluster environments up to $z \sim 1$. This conclusion is drawn from a uniform analysis of a remarkably large sample of 105 clusters and 1626 spectroscopically-confirmed member galaxies from the SPT and ACT Sunyaev-Zel'dovich surveys at 0.26 $< z, 21 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. Spatially extended halos of H I Ly$α$ emission are now ubiquitously found around high-redshift star-forming galaxies. But our understanding of the nature and powering mechanisms of these halos is still hampered by the complex radiative transfer effects of the Ly$α$ line and limited angular resolution. In this paper, we present resolved Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of SGAS J122651.3+215220, a strongly-lensed pair of $L^{*}$ galaxies at $z=2.92$ embedded in a Ly$α$ halo of $L_{Lyα}=(6.2\pm1.3)\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Globally, the system shows a line profile that is markedly asymmetric and redshifted, but its width and peak shift vary significantly across the halo. By fitting the spatially binned Ly$α$ spectra with a collection of radiative transfer galactic wind models, we infer a mean outflow expansion velocity of $\approx 211$ km s$^{-1}$, with higher values preferentially found on both sides of the system's major axis. The velocity of the outflow is validated with the blueshift of low-ionization metal absorption lines in the spectra of the central galaxies. We also identify a faint ($M_{1500} \approx -16.7$) companion detected in both Ly$α$ and the continuum, whose properties are in agreement with a predicted population of satellite galaxies that contribute to the extended Ly$α$ emission. We present a novel Bayesian methodology to jointly model photometry and deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) 2d grism spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies. Our requiem2d code measures both unresolved and resolved stellar populations, ages, and star-formation histories (SFHs) for the ongoing REQIUEM (REsolving QUIEscent Magnified) Galaxies Survey, which targets strong gravitationally lensed quiescent galaxies at z~2. We test the accuracy of \texttt{requiem2d} using a simulated sample of massive galaxies at z~2 from the Illustris cosmological simulation and find we recover the general trends in SFH and median stellar ages. We further present a pilot study for the REQUIEM Galaxies Survey: MRG-S0851, a quintuply-imaged, massive ($\log M_* / M_\odot = 11.02 \pm 0.04$) red galaxy at $z=1.883\pm 0.001$. With an estimated gravitational magnification of $\mu = 5.7^{+0.4}_{-0.2}$, we sample the stellar populations on 0.6 kpc physical size bins. The global mass-weighted median age is constrained to be $1.8_{-0.2}^{+0.3}$ Gyr, and our spatially resolved analysis reveals that MRG-S0851 has a flat age gradient in the inner 3 kpc core after taking into account the subtle effects of dust and metallicity on age measurements, favoring an early formation scenario. We report the detection of extended Lyman-$��$ emission from the host galaxy of SDSS~J2222+2745, a strongly lensed quasar at $z = 2.8$. Spectroscopic follow-up clearly reveals extended Lyman-$��$ in emission between two images of the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). We reconstruct the lensed quasar host galaxy in the source plane by applying a strong lens model to HST imaging, and resolve spatial scales as small as $\sim$200 parsecs. In the source plane we recover the host galaxy morphology to within a few hundred parsecs of the central AGN, and map the extended Lyman-$��$ emission to its physical origin on one side of the host galaxy at radii $\sim$0.5-2 kpc from the central AGN. There are clear morphological differences between the Lyman-$��$ and rest-frame ultraviolet stellar continuum emission from the quasar host galaxy. Furthermore, the relative velocity profiles of quasar Lyman-$��$, host galaxy Lyman-$��$, and metal lines in outflowing gas reveal differences in the absorbing material affecting the AGN and host galaxy. These data indicate the presence of patchy local intervening gas in front of the central quasar and its host galaxy. This interpretation is consistent with the central luminous quasar being obscured across a substantial fraction of its surrounding solid angle, resulting in strong anisotropy in the exposure of the host galaxy to ionizing radiation from the AGN. New Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet and optical imaging of the strong-lensing galaxy cluster SDSS J1531+3414 (z=0.335) reveals two centrally dominant elliptical galaxies participating in an ongoing major merger. The interaction is at least somewhat rich in cool gas, as the merger is associated with a complex network of nineteen massive superclusters of young stars (or small tidal dwarf galaxies) separated by ~1 kpc in projection from one another, combining to an estimated total star formation rate of ~5 solar masses per year. The resolved young stellar superclusters are threaded by narrow H-alpha, [O II], and blue excess filaments arranged in a network spanning ~27 kpc across the two merging galaxies. This morphology is strongly reminiscent of the well-known "beads on a string" mode of star formation observed on kpc-scales in the arms of spiral galaxies, resonance rings, and in tidal tails between interacting galaxies. Nevertheless, the arrangement of this star formation relative to the nuclei of the two galaxies is difficult to interpret in a dynamical sense, as no known "beads on a string" systems associated with kpc-scale tidal interactions exhibit such lopsided morphology relative to the merger participants. In this Letter we present the images and follow-up spectroscopy, and discuss possible physical interpretations for the unique arrangement of the young stellar clusters. While we suggest that this morphology is likely to be dynamically short-lived, a more quantitative understanding awaits necessary multiwavelength follow-up, including optical integral field spectroscopy, ALMA sub-mm interferometry, and Chandra X-ray imaging., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. The velocity distribution of galaxies in clusters is not universal; rather, galaxies are segregated according to their spectral type and relative luminosity. We examine the velocity distributions of different populations of galaxies within 89 Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) selected galaxy clusters spanning $ 0.28 < z < 1.08$. Our sample is primarily draw from the SPT-GMOS spectroscopic survey, supplemented by additional published spectroscopy, resulting in a final spectroscopic sample of 4148 galaxy spectra---2868 cluster members. The velocity dispersion of star-forming cluster galaxies is $17\pm4$% greater than that of passive cluster galaxies, and the velocity dispersion of bright ($m < m^{*}-0.5$) cluster galaxies is $11\pm4$% lower than the velocity dispersion of our total member population. We find good agreement with simulations regarding the shape of the relationship between the measured velocity dispersion and the fraction of passive vs. star-forming galaxies used to measure it, but we find a small offset between this relationship as measured in data and simulations in which suggests that our dispersions are systematically low by as much as 3\% relative to simulations. We argue that this offset could be interpreted as a measurement of the effective velocity bias that describes the ratio of our observed velocity dispersions and the intrinsic velocity dispersion of dark matter particles in a published simulation result. Measuring velocity bias in this way suggests that large spectroscopic surveys can improve dispersion-based mass-observable scaling relations for cosmology even in the face of velocity biases, by quantifying and ultimately calibrating them out., Accepted to ApJ; 21 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables
