In this paper, the characteristics of urban heat island (UHI) and boundary layer structures in the Beijing area, China, are analyzed using conventional and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with a single-layer urban canopy model (UCM) is used to simulate these urban weather features for comparison with observations. WRF is also used to test the sensitivity of model simulations to different urban land use scenarios and urban building structures to investigate the impacts of urbanization on surface weather and boundary layer structures. Results show that the coupled WRF/Noah/UCM modeling system seems to be able to reproduce the following observed features reasonably well: 1) the diurnal variation of UHI intensity; 2) the spatial distribution of UHI in Beijing; 3) the diurnal variation of wind speed and direction, and interactions between mountain–valley circulations and UHI; 4) small-scale boundary layer convective rolls and cells; and 5) the nocturnal boundary layer lower-level jet. The statistical analyses reveal that urban canopy variables (e.g., temperature, wind speed) from WRF/Noah/UCM compare better with surface observations than the conventional variables (e.g., 2-m temperature, 10-m wind speed). Both observations and the model show that the airflow over Beijing is dominated by mountain–valley flows that are modified by urban–rural circulations. Sensitivity tests imply that the presence or absence of urban surfaces significantly impacts the formation of horizontal convective rolls (HCRs), and the details in urban structures seem to have less pronounced but not negligible effects on HCRs. This paper reports the use of LIDAR technique, vertical wind profiler (VWP) and the coupled MM5-CMAQ air quality modeling system to investigate a high PM10 concentration episode occurred in Beijing, China during January 8–9, 2004. Through the regression analysis between the observed PM10 concentrations and the observed extinction coefficients, the converting formulas from the LIDAR records to the PM10 mass concentrations in Beijing have been found. Further, a 2-level-nested grid domain with spatial resolutions of 36 and 12 km have been designed and employed for this study, and the coupled MM5-CMAQ modeling system has then been evaluated using both the ground-level PM10 observations and the vertical profiles of PM10 deduced from the measured LIDAR extinction coefficients. Based on the verified modeling system, two emission scenarios were designed to quantitatively assess the trans-boundary PM10 contributions from the surrounding provinces of Beijing. The results illustrated that the particulate matter buildup over the Beijing region was due to a number of factors, including pollutants brought in from its surrounding provinces by the southwest winds and the emission from local sources within Beijing. It indicates that while Beijing needs to take positive steps to reduce its own pollution emissions, much effort should also be placed on demanding more pollution reduction and better environmental performance from its surrounding provinces. The objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between atmospheric pollen concentration and daily visits for allergic conjunctivitis. Daily counts of outpatient visits for allergic conjunctivitis, atmospheric pollen concentration, and meteorological data during pollen season of 2018 and 2019 were collected from Beijing Shijitan Hospital, China. A time-series analysis on generalized additive model with Poisson distribution was used to estimate the relationship between pollen concentration and visits for allergic conjunctivitis, after controlling for the time trend, weather variables, day of the week, and holiday effect. The RStudio was used to generate Spearman correlation coefficients and then to plot the lag-response curves for specific and incremental cumulative effects of relative risk (RR). There was a moderate positive correlation between pollen concentration and visits for allergic conjunctivitis, and Spearman's correlation coefficient was 0.521 in 2018 and 0.515 in 2019 (P<0.01). The specific cumulative effect peak associated with per 10 grains/kmm2 increases of atmospheric pollen concentration was within 0 day, and the lag time was 8 days(2018, 2019). The incremental cumulative effect peak associated with per 10 grains/kmm2 increases of atmospheric pollen concentration occurred on lag day 10 (2018) and lag day 8 (2019), and the lag time was 14 days (2018) and 20 days (2019). In this paper, an integrated MM5–CMAQ modeling approach was employed to investigate the PM10 air pollution issue in Beijing, China, with a focus on assessing pollution contributions from surrounding provinces. A 2-level-nested grid domain with spatial resolutions of 36 and 12km was designed for the study region. Seven monitoring stations across Beijing municipality were selected to provide hourly PM10 measurement data. The months of January, April, July and October in 2002 were taken as target periods for model performance evaluation. Five emission scenarios were designed and run in order to quantitatively assess the trans-boundary PM10 contributions. The results show that, while Beijing needs to take positive steps to reduce its own pollution emissions, much effort should also be placed on demanding more pollution reduction and better environmental performance from surrounding provinces. Severe winter haze accompanied by high concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) occurs frequently in the North China Plain and threatens public health. Organic matter (OM) and sulfate are recognized as major components of PM 2.5 , while atmospheric models often fail to predict their high concentrations during severe winter haze due to incomplete understanding of secondary aerosol formation mechanisms. By using a novel combination of single-particle mass spectrometry and an optimized ion chromatography method, here we show that hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS), formed by the reaction between formaldehyde (HCHO) and dissolved SO2 in aerosol water, is ubiquitous in Beijing during winter. The HMS concentration and the molar ratio of HMS to sulfate increased with the deterioration of winter haze. High concentrations of precursors (SO2 and HCHO) coupled with low oxidant levels, low temperature, high relative humidity, and moderately acidic pH facilitate the heterogeneous formation of HMS, which could account for up to 15 % of OM in winter haze and lead to up to 36 % overestimates of sulfate when using traditional ion chromatography. Despite the clean air actions having substantially reduced SO2 emissions, the HMS concentration and molar ratio of HMS to sulfate during severe winter haze increased from 2015 to 2016 with the growth in HCHO concentration. Our findings illustrate the significant contribution of heterogeneous HMS chemistry to severe winter haze in Beijing, which helps to improve the prediction of OM and sulfate and suggests that the reduction in HCHO can help to mitigate haze pollution. Due to the climate variability and the intensification of human activities, the hydrological time series no longer satisfies the hypothesis of stationarity. In this study, a framework for precipitation frequency analysis is developed based on the Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape parameters (GAMLSS), a tool for modeling time series under nonstationary condition. Based on the 12 stations in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region of China, two approaches to nonstationary modeling in GAMLSS were applied to the annual maximum daily precipitation records. The results of the first approach, in which the parameters of the selected distributions are modeled as a function of time only, show the presence of clear nonstationarities in the annual maximum daily precipitation. In the second approach, the parameters of the precipitation distributions are modeled as functions of seven climate indices. The results show that the model using the second method captures more adequately the dispersion of precipitation values than the model using the first method. The application of nonstationary analysis shows the differences between the nonstationary quantiles and their stationary equivalents, which suggests the urgent need for nonstationary modeling of extreme precipitation in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region of China. To assess the primary and secondary sources of fine organic aerosols after the aggressive implementation of air pollution controls during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, 12 h PM2.5 values were measured at an urban site at Peking University (PKU) and an upwind rural site at Yufa during the CAREBEIJING-2008 (Campaigns of Air quality REsearch in BEIJING and surrounding region) summer field campaign. The average PM2.5 concentrations were 72.5±43.6 μgm-3 and 64.3±36.2 μgm-3 (average ±standard deviation, below as the same) at PKU and Yufa, respectively, showing the lowest concentrations in recent years. Combining the results from a CMB (chemical mass balance) model and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) tracer-yield model, five primary and four secondary fine organic aerosol sources were compared with the results from previous studies in Beijing. The relative contribution of mobile sources to PM2.5 concentrations was increased in 2008, with diesel engines contributing 16.2±5.9% and 14.5±4.1% and gasoline vehicles contributing 10.3±8.7% and 7.9±6.2% to organic carbon (OC) at PKU and Yufa, respectively. Due to the implementation of emission controls, the absolute OC concentrations from primary sources were reduced during the Olympics, and the contributions from secondary formation of OC represented a larger relative source of fine organic aerosols. Compared with the non-controlled period prior to the Olympics, primary vehicle contributions were reduced by 30% at the urban site and 24% at the rural site. The reductions in coal combustion contributions were 57% at PKU and 7% at Yufa. Our results demonstrate that theemission control measures implemented in 2008 significantly alleviated the primary organic particle pollution in and around Beijing. Measurements of ambient OH and HO2 radicals were performed by laser induced fluorescence (LIF) during CAREBeijing2006 (Campaigns of Air Quality Research in Beijing and Surrounding Region 2006) at the suburban site Yufa in the south of Beijing in summer 2006. On most days, local air chemistry was influenced by aged air pollution that was advected by a slow, almost stagnant wind from southern regions. Observed daily concentration maxima were in the range of (4-17)x106 cm-3 for OH and (2-24)x108 cm-3 for HO2 (including an estimated interference of 25% from RO2). During daytime, OH reactivities were generally high (10-30 s-1) and mainly contributed by observed VOCs and their calculated oxidation products. The comparison of modelled and measured HOx concentrations reveals a systematic underprediction of OH as a function of NO. A large discrepancy of a factor 2.6 is found at the lowest NO concentration encountered (0.1 ppb), whereas the discrepancy becomes insignificant above 1 ppb NO. This study extends similar observations from the Pearl-River Delta (PRD) in South China to a more urban environment. The OH discrepancy at Yufa can be resolved, if NO-independent additional OH recycling is assumed in the model. The postulated Leuven Isoprene Mechanism (LIM) has the potential to explain the gap between modelled and measured OH at Beijing taking into account conservative error estimates, but lacks experimental confirmation. This and the hereby unresolved discrepancy at PRD suggest that other VOCs besides isoprene might be involved in the required, additional OH recycling. Fast primary production of ROx radicals up to 7 ppb h was determined at Beijing which was dominated by the photolysis of O3, HONO, HCHO, and dicarbonyls. For a special case, 20 August, when the plume of Beijing city was encountered, a missing primary HOx source (about 3 ppb h-1 ) was determined under high NOx conditions similar to other urban areas like Mexico City. A coupled ARPS–CMAQ modeling system was applied to investigate the atmospheric assimilative capacity (AAC) of PM10 in the Beijing metropolitan region of China. The AAC was defined as the maximum allowable pollutant emission that can be discharged to the atmosphere without violating the desired air quality objective in the planning region. The coupled modeling system was firstly evaluated through comparing the simulation results of PM10 concentration with the corresponding observations during four representative months in 2002, which showed an acceptable modeling performance. By using a trial-and-error approach, the validated modeling system was run through gradually reducing the emission strength within the modeling domain from a GIS-based pollutant emission database until a desired air quality objective was achieved. The air quality objective was characterized by the air quality guideline-satisfaction ratio (AQGSR) which was defined as the ratio of days when the daily PM10 concentrations are below the air quality standard during a certain time period. The PM10 emission within the modeling domain after such trial-and-error reduction under the condition of satisfying a certain AQGSR was considered its corresponding assimilative capacity. Accordingly, the atmospheric assimilative capacities of PM10 in the study region were identified corresponding to the AQGSR of 60, 65, 70, 75 and 80%, respectively. The relation between such capacity and guideline-satisfaction ratio was then established through regression analysis. The results could provide sound basis for decision makers in terms of effective air quality management by understanding the allowable pollutant discharge under different desired air quality objectives.
