This article reports experimental observation of rotating plasma discharges in a coaxial structure at a frequency of 2.45 GHz and under atmospheric pressure. In contrast to other cases, the discharge in our case spins without external static magnetic field or moving electrodes. Its formation and impact factors are experimentally explored. Results show that the rotating discharge, especially the peculiarities of its rotation velocity, is attributed to the combined action of gas flow and electromagnetic field intensity between the conductors. Raising the electromagnetic field intensity or reducing the gas flow rate in appropriate ranges can result in a notable increase of the rotation speed. Experiments also demonstrate that the rotation properties are independent of the coaxial dimensions. This article is supposed to provide a new thinking and guidelines for inducing rotating discharge in a coaxial structure without electrodes moving or external magnetic field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was carried out to investigate the efficacy of the non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma produced with dielectric barrier discharge (APPD) using air as a processing gas and microwave energy to control Tribolium castaneum and Trogoderma granarium adults and larvae in wheat grains. Insects' mortality was found to be power and time-dependent. The results indicated that non-thermal APPD and the microwave have enough insecticidal effect on the target pests. From the bioassay, LT50's and LT90's levels were estimated, T. granarium larvae appeared more tolerant to non-thermal APPD and the microwave energy than adults 7 days post-exposure. The germination percentage of wheat grains increased as the time of exposure to the non-thermal APPD increased. On the contrary, the germination percentage of wheat grains decreased as the time of exposure to the microwave increased. In addition, changes in antioxidant enzyme activities, catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and peroxidase, in adults and larvae were examined after 24 h post-treatment to non-thermal APPD at 15.9 W power level, which caused 50% mortality. The activity of CAT, GST and lipid peroxide in the treated larvae showed a significant increase post-exposure to the non-thermal APPD at 15.9 W power level. On the other hand, no significant change in GSH-Px activity was observed. Reductions in the level of glutathione (GSH) and protein content occurred in treated larvae in comparison with the control. The results of experimental studies of combustion of propane–air gaseous mixture when it was ignited by a microwave discharge have been described. The mixture with different propane content fills a sealed radio-transparent tube placed along the axis of a focused linearly polarized quasi-optical microwave beam at atmospheric pressure. Multi-point ignition of the mixture is carried out near one end of the tube by a pulsed microwave discharge with a surface-developed streamer structure. The growth of gas pressure in the tube as propane burned was recorded in the experiments. The microwave pulse energy being invested in high-temperature discharge plasma has been estimated in them. The minimum percentage of propane in the mixture at which the microwave discharge ignites it has been determined in experiments. The time dependence of the pressure increase in the tube as the propane burns determines the combustion process dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An atmospheric pressure surface-wave microwave discharge and a kHz plasma jet are used to activate purified water. It is shown, that by varying the treatment distance and the initial Ar/N2/O2 mixture composition of the surface-wave microwave discharge the concentration ratio of NO3− and H2O2 radicals created in the plasma activated water (PAW) can be varied over three orders of magnitude, which can be preserved during months of storage at room temperature. At the same time, with the 5 min treatment of the 32 ml water the absolute radical concentrations are varied in the range of 0.5–85 mg l−1 for H2O2, 20–180 mg l−1 for NO3− and 0.5–14 mg l−1 for NO2−. In the case of the N2 kHz plasma jet this concentration ratio can be tuned within one order of magnitude by varying the treatment distance. By treating different volumes very similar concentration ratios are obtained, which evolve differently during storage, as the ageing dynamics is determined by the absolute concentration of radicals. In general, the radical most affected by ageing is NO2−, whose recombination is found to be determined by the H2O2 radical. In order to control the H2O2 concentration and thus the NO2− radicals recombination, the application of a Fenton type reaction is suggested, which is implied by inserting a copper surface into PAW during or after plasma treatment. Microwave discharges in liquids represent a new direction in plasma physics and chemistry. Results of experiments on the recovery of metals from a liquid residue after vacuum distillation of the hydroconversion product of vacuum tower bottoms by treating the residue with microwave discharge initiated in its bulk at atmospheric pressure are presented. It has been found for the first time that the concentrations of Al, Co, Cu, Fe, Mo, Ni, V, and Zn metals in a treelike structure deposited on a microwave antenna are 10-20 times their concentrations in the substrate.
