Self-absorption, which is known to severely disturb identification of the emission peak intensity in emission-based spectroscopy, was first studied using ordinary single pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). It was found that severe self-absorption, with an evident self-reversal, occurs in the resonance emission lines of high concentration Na, K, and Al, and thus it is impossible to obtain the linear calibration curve required for quantitative analysis. To overcome this problem, we introduce a double pulse orthogonal technique in which the first laser is fired in a parallel orientation at a varied distance of 2–6 mm from the sample surface. It is well known that the strong shock wave generated by this laser irradiation temporarily creates a vacuum-like condition immediately in front of the sample surface. This action is followed by a second laser irradiation oriented perpendicular to the sample surface. The sample ablated by the second laser irradiation expands following the shockwave excitation process in the vacuum-like air atmosphere created by the first laser. The obtained spectra of the resonance emission lines of high concentration Na, K, and Al are free from the self-reversal and weakly affected by the self-absorption effect. A linear calibration curve that intercepts near zero point for K element over a wide concentration range is also demonstrated in this study. A series of measurements have been performed on the time dependences of the intensities of helium, hydrogen, and deuterium emission lines from the corresponding laser-induced helium plasma at atmospheric pressure for two different He flow rates. The prolonged H¿ and H¿ emissions along with their constant intensity ratio over a relatively extended period indicate the need to provide an alternative excitation mechanism other than the well-known thermal excitation process in a hot plasma. This additional excitation mechanism is also related to the metastable excited state of a He atom as indicated by the similar characteristics of the observed time dependence of the emission intensities. The enhanced intensity and lifetime of He emission at a high He flow rate was explained in terms of the collision-induced increase in the number of He atoms excited to above the 2 1S0 metastable state, which was also responsible for the delayed excitation of H and D atoms via an energy transfer mechanism involving a Penning-like chemi-ionization process. Finally, the benefits of He-assisted delayed excitation of H and D atoms and the aforementioned enhanced intensity and lifetime at a high He flow rate were demonstrated by the achievement of clearly resolved H¿ and D¿ emission lines. An experimental study on gas analysis by means of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy was conducted using a Nd-yttrium aluminum garnet laser (1,064 nm, 120 mJ, 8 ns) and helium host gas at atmospheric pressure on a sample of mixed water (H2O) and heavy water (D2O) in vapor form. It was shown that completely resolved hydrogen (Hα) and deuterium (Dα) emission lines that are separated by only 0.179 nm could be obtained at a properly delayed detection time when the charged particles responsible for the strong Stark broadening effect in the plasma have mostly disappeared. Abstract: An experimental study of double pulse LIBS is performed for the development of highly sensitive and quantitative analysis of Cl and Ca for the strength evaluation of concrete. The two lasers employed are arranged in orthogonal geometry and operated for delayed ablation with delay time of 10μs, using He ambient gas at atmospheric pressure. The very large intensity enhancement is obtained over those detected with single pulse operation without generating the He plasma. It is most remarkable that the same sharpness and intensity enhancement observed in the previous double pulse experiment with 37mJ laser ablation energy is achieved in the present experiment with much lower ablation energy of merely 2.5mJ, resulting in average crater size of about 10μm in diameter. Further, a linear relation is obtained between the Cl concentration and its emission intensity in alumina samples, while an estimated limit of detection of 80ppm is obtained by using concrete sample, which is adequate for highly sensitive quantitative Cl analysis in concrete. Abstract: An Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm, 8 ns, 30 mJ) was focused on various types of fresh, fossilized white coral and giant shell samples, including samples of imitation shell and marble. Such samples are extremely important as material for preparing prayer beads that are extensively used in the Buddhist faith. The aim of this research was to develop a non-destructive method to distinguish original beads from their imitations by means of spectral measurements of the carbon, hydrogen, sodium and magnesium emission intensities and by measuring the hardness of the sample using the ratio between Ca (II) 396.8 nm and Ca (I) 422.6 nm. Based on these measurements, original fresh coral beads can be distinguished from any imitation made from hard wood. The same technique was also effective in distinguishing beads made of shell from its imitation. A spectral analysis of bead was also performed on a fossilized white coral sample and the result can be used to distinguish to some extent the fossilized white coral beads from any imitation made from marble. It was also found that the plasma plume should be generated at low ambient pressure to significantly improve the hydrogen and carbon emission intensity and also to avoid energy loss inside the crater during laser irradiation at atmospheric pressure. The results of this study confirm that operating the laser-induced plasma spectroscopy at reduced ambient pressure offers distinct advantage for bead analysis over the conventional laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique operated at atmospheric pressure.
