In the framework of AfriCultuReS project, operational deterministic weather forecasts provide valuable information on the expected weather conditions over the African continent as a part of federation of services within the project. In this study, we investigate the performance of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Global Forecast System (GFS) over pilot regions in Africa by utilizing available surface observations, satellite and reanalysis data. The verification period covers two consecutive years (June 2018–May 2020). In addition, we assess the ability of the model to provide skillful forecasts through three high-impact precipitation events that occurred during this period. The results show that the model presents both positive and negative biases with respect to its predicted near surface air temperature, underestimates the near surface relative humidity and the mean sea-level pressure, while overestimates the wind speed at 10 m. The neighborhood-based statistical verification of the 24-h accumulated precipitation reveals that the model forecasts the precipitation events more accurately as the verification area is increasing but at higher precipitation thresholds its performance deteriorates. Different variability, errors and correlation between simulated and observed precipitation exist in each forecast lead day and region. A range of model behavior and forecast skill is found with respect to the examined three precipitation events. Skillful forecasts up to four days ahead were provided in the cases of the Tropical Cyclone IDAI and the flash flooding events in northern Tunisia, while the lowest performance was found in the region of the West African Monsoon. This study explores the direct and semi-direct radiative effect of North African dust in the present and future climate using the regional climate model RegCM4. The simulations cover a historical decade extending from December 1999 to November 2009 and a future decade that spans from December 2089 to November 2099 under the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 (RCP4.5), without considering land-cover/land-use changes. For each time-slice a set of two experiments was conducted, namely the "Control", in which dust is radiatively inactive and the "Feedback", in which dust interacts with shortwave and longwave radiation. The impact of North African dust on the regional radiative balance is assessed by comparing the "Feedback" and the "Control" experiments during the historical period. The results indicate that the combined effect of dust Direct + Semi-direct Radiative Effect (DSRE) on the shortwave is − 13.8 W m−2 and − 10.7 W m−2 over the Sahel and the Sahara, respectively. The Direct Radiative Effect (DRE) dominates over the Semi-direct Radiative Effect (SRE) in both winter and summer, although during summer over some parts of the desert the SRE in the longwave spectrum accounts for almost 50% of the DSRE. Part of this is due to a noteworthy statistically significant increase of clouds that reaches values up to 3% and stretches across the eastern and western Sahara desert. Dust DSRE intensifies moderately in the future period (− 15.8 W m−2 and − 11.0 W m−2), while its spatial distribution remains the same, suggesting that the effect of climate change in the atmosphere will not alter the radiative effect of dust over North Africa considerably. When taking into account the dust radiative feedback in regional climate simulations the maximum temperature is altered by − 0.2/− 0.2 °C and − 0.3/− 0.6 °C over the Sahel and Sahara regions, respectively, during the summer/winter period, mainly as a result of changes in the shortwave radiative balance. On the contrary, the minimum temperature increases, since it is mostly controlled by the longwave radiation emitted from the Earth's surface. In the future period the near surface air temperature increases by 1.5–2.5 °C and the fine dust column burden increases by + 4% to + 8% in comparison to the historical period, mainly due to the RCP4.5 forcing. When the dust feedback on climate is active in future simulations it can decrease the summer daily maximum temperature by 0.3 °C over Sahel, and decrease or increase it locally in Sahara by up to 0.2 °C. Prior to the Feedback-Control analysis an extensive evaluation has been conducted for dust optical depth, dust extinction, near surface air temperature and cloud fraction cover using the LIVAS, CRU and CM SAF datasets. The ability of a large ensemble of regional climate models to accurately simulate heat waves at the regional scale of Europe was evaluated. Within the EURO-CORDEX project, several state-of-the art models, including non-hydrostatic meso-scale models, were run for an extended time period (20 years) at high resolution (12 km), over a large domain allowing for the first time the simultaneous representation of atmospheric phenomena over a large range of spatial scales. Eight models were run in this configuration, and thirteen models were run at a classical resolution of 50 km. The models were driven with the same boundary conditions, the ERA-Interim re-analysis, and except for one simulation, no observations were assimilated in the inner domain. Results, which are compared with daily temperature and precipitation observations (ECA&D and E-OBS data sets) show that, even forced by the same re-analysis, the ensemble exhibits a large spread. A preliminary analysis of the sources of spread, using in particular simulations of the same model with different parameterizations, shows that the simulation of hot temperature is primarily sensitive to the convection and the microphysics schemes, which affect incoming energy and the Bowen ratio. Further, most models exhibit an overestimation of summertime temperature extremes in Mediterranean regions and an underestimation over Scandinavia. Even after bias removal, the simulated heat wave events were found to be too persistent, but a higher resolution reduced this deficiency. The amplitude of events as well as the variability beyond the 90th percentile threshold were found to be too strong in almost all simulations and increasing resolution did not generally improve this deficiency. Resolution increase was also shown to induce large-scale 90th percentile warming or cooling for some models, with beneficial or detrimental effects on the overall biases. Even though full causality cannot be established on the basis of this evaluation work, the drivers of such regional differences were shown to be linked to changes in precipitation due to resolution changes, affecting the energy partitioning. Finally, the inter-annual sequence of hot summers over central/southern Europe was found to be fairly well simulated in most experiments despite an overestimation of the number of hot days and of the variability. The accurate simulation of inter-annual variability for a few models is independent of the model bias. This indicates that internal variability of high summer temperatures should not play a major role in controlling inter-annual variability. Despite some improvements, especially along coastlines, the analyses conducted here did not allow us to generally conclude that a higher resolution is clearly beneficial for a correct representation of heat waves by regional climate models.
