An interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) structured antibacterial layer was prepared on dental base materials containing quaternary ammonium salt monomers (HMDQAs), polyurethane dimethacrylate oligomers (BIHs) and functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles using a one-step photo-crosslinking method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), ultraviolet near-infrared visible spectrophotometry (UV-3600) and water contact angles were used to study the surface properties of the coatings. SiO2 nanoparticles changed the hydrophilicity of the cationic antimicrobial surface and increased its contact angle. Furthermore, the IPN coatings exhibited highly effective antibacterial activity on the modified dental base material, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), against Streptococcus mutans, which was evaluated by plate colony counting, optical density (OD), SEM and a live/dead assay. The MTT assay confirmed their biocompatibility. The IPN silicon complexed coating displayed good transparency, excellent antibacterial activity, and no cytotoxicity, which indicated enormous potential for the treatment of denture bases. In this paper, coatings with antibacterial adhesion, excellent biocompatibility, good superhydrophobicity and highly transmittance were fabricated by mixing hydroxyl group fluropolymer (PHF), polyurethane oligomer (Pre-PU) with epoxy functionalized SiO 2 nanoparticles and thermal-crosslinked. The properties of coatings were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Ultraviolet near-infrared visible spectrophotometer (UV-3600). The morphology results indicated that the roughness scale of micro-nano structure surface can be monitored by changing the contents of functionalized polymers and SiO 2. The coating S2 showed outstanding superhydrophobicity with the contact angle of 155.9°, the sliding angle less than 1°, and good transparency. Furthermore, the coating exhibited antibacterial adhesion and favorable biosafety, confirming a potential for application in the oral field. • The micro-nano structure superhydrophobic coatings were fabricated through a facile spray-coating method. • The coating has hierarchical papillae structure, high contact angle, low sliding angle. • The coating shows good self-cleaning property and antibacterial adhesion. • The coating possesses excellent cell viability and biocompatibility.
