We report a population kinetics study on line emissions of the Pm-like Bi 22+ performed by using a collisional-radiative (CR) model. Population rates of excited levels are analyzed to explain the population trapping in the 4 f 13 5 s 2 state which causes the loss of the 5 s − 5 p resonance lines in emission spectra. Based on the present analysis, we elucidate why the population trapping is not facilitated for a meta-stable excited level of the Sm-like Bi 21+ . The emission line spectra are calculated for the Pm-like isoelectronic sequence from Au 18+ through W 13+ and compared with experimental measurements by electron-beam-ion-traps (EBITs). Structures of the spectra are similar for all of the cases except for calculated W 13+ spectra. The calculated spectra are hardly reconciled with the measured W 13+ spectrum using the compact electron-beam-ion-trap (CoBIT) [Phys. Rev. A 92 (2015) 022510].

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra of highly charged praseodymium (Pr) and neodymium (Nd) ions have been investigated in optically thin high-temperature plasmas produced in the Large Helical Device (LHD), a magnetically confined torus device for fusion research. Discrete spectral lines emitted mainly from highly charged ions having 4s or 4p outermost electrons were observed in plasmas with electron temperatures of 0.8–1.8 keV. Most of the isolated lines of Ga-like to Cu-like Nd ions were identified by a comparison with the recent data recorded in an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). The isolated lines of Pr ions corresponding to the identified lines of Nd ions were easily assigned from a similarity of the spectral feature for these two elements. As a result, some of the lines of Pr ions have been newly identified experimentally for the first time in this study.

Accurate extreme ultraviolet spectra of open N-shell neodymium (Nd) ions were recorded at the electron beam ion trap facility of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The measurements were performed for nominal electron beam energies in the range of 0.90 keV to 2.31 keV. The measured spectra were then compared with the spectra simulated by a collisional-radiative model utilizing atomic data produced with a fully relativistic atomic structure code. Consequently, 59 lines from Br-like to Ni-like Nd ions were unambiguously identified, most of which were newly assigned in this study. The wavelengths of 9 known lines from Ni-, Cu- and Zn-like Nd ions were in excellent agreement with previous measurements.

Quantitative tungsten study with reliable atomic modeling is important for successful achievement of ITER and fusion reactors. We have developed tungsten atomic modeling for understanding the tungsten behavior in fusion plasmas. The modeling is applied to the analysis of tungsten spectra observed from plasmas of the large helical device (LHD) with tungsten pellet injection. We found that extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission of W24+ to W33+ ions at 1.5–3.5 nm are sensitive to electron temperature and useful to examine the tungsten behavior in edge plasmas. We can reproduce measured EUV spectra at 1.5–3.5 nm by calculated spectra with the tungsten atomic model and obtain charge state distributions of tungsten ions in LHD plasmas at different temperatures around 1 keV. Our model is applied to calculate the unresolved transition array (UTA) seen at 4.5–7 nm tungsten spectra. We analyze the effect of configuration interaction on population kinetics related to the UTA structure in detail and find the importance of two-electron-one-photon transitions between 4p54dn+1– 4p64dn−14f. Radiation power rate of tungsten due to line emissions is also estimated with the model and is consistent with other models within factor 2.

We have measured extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra from tungsten ions around 20 nm region in plasmas produced in the Large Helical Device at the National Institute for Fusion Science. The spectra after injecting a tungsten pellet into a hydrogen plasma were monitored by a grazing incidence spectrometer. Quasicontinuum spectral feature arising from unresolved transition array (UTA) was observed around 20 nm region in plasmas with temperatures below 1.0 keV. This structure is reasonably considered to be the same one as those observed in another tokamak device or laser produced plasmas under low temperature conditions. Atomic structure calculations have been performed for tungsten ions with open 5p, 5s and 4f subshells (W7+–W27+) to interpret this commonly observed feature around 20 nm. Wavelengths and gA values for these transitions were calculated, and their mean wavelengths and extent were compared with the observations, which suggests that the emission largely arises from n = 5–5 transitions in stages lower than W27+.
